A lesson in charity

A Sydenham mum is hoping to impart life lessons to the next generation. On Sunday, Rian Aldim and a group of friends put together food and care packs for those in need. “This all started with wanting to do something where I could include the kids,” she said. “I contacted a few organisations to see if we could volunteer, but due to insurance circumstances that wasn’t able to happen. So I decided to do something independently.” Ms Aldim posted her idea on social media and was overwhelmed with the response within just 24 hours. “I thought, let’s try and feed 30 people, but with all the donations we received from the local butcher, chemist and grocer, we’re easily going to be able to feed over 100.” The Soup Place in Flinders Lane helped distribute the packs. Ms Aldim said it had been an eye-opening experience for more than 12 children who helped on the day. “I think actually seeing how these things work is a lot different than just telling them.” She is hoping the initiative will become an annual event. Icon becomes an eyesore Sunshine’s iconic Millennium Man statue is rapidly deteriorating as an ownership squabble threatens his future. The once Zeus-like creation near the Village Cinema entrance now looks anything but as he slowly rots away, covered in graffiti and in a derelict state. Village Cinemas commissioned the colossal ironman in 1997 and two years ago said it would work with Vicinity Centres – the group that owns and manages the Sunshine Marketplace – to restore him. Works have never eventuated.

Both Village Cinemas and Vicinity Centres this week refused to claim ownership of Millennium Man when contacted by Star Weekly Weekly. Albion resident Dinesh Jayasuriya believes Millenium Man could become a tourist attraction and has led an online campaign to have the statue restored. “He’s half serious, half a bit of a joke – he’s a cultural icon,” Mr Jayasuriya said. “The Marketplace is at risk of becoming just another shopping mall, it needs a point of difference.” Mr Jayasuriya said it was sad to see the landmark in its current state.

Recyclables destined for landfill By Tate Papworth Recyclable material from Brimbank’s kerbside collections will again be sent to landfill after the Environment Protection Authority slapped a ban on contractor SKM Recycling. EPA Victoria on Thursday night ordered SKM to stop receiving recyclables at its glass recycling facility, leading to the closure of its four processing plants in Coolaroo, Laverton, Geelong and Hallam until further notice. SKM advised Brimbank council that it would immediately stop collecting all recyclables.

It’s the second time this year the council has found itself in this position. In February, the council was forced to send its recycling to landfill after the EPA ordered SKM to stop accepting waste at two of its sites because stockpiled material posed a “significant” fire risk. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was a disappointing outcome. “We are hugely frustrated and disappointed that our community has been placed in this situation once again,” she said. “We share our community’s disappointment

and we are working hard to find a solution. “In the meantime, council’s kerbside recycling collection service will continue – with recyclable material being directed to landfill. We encourage any households with a recycling bin that is not full to consider storing their recycling where possible.” SKM spokesman Rob Spence told ABC radio the temporary closure was a result of the EPA’s ban on Glass Recovery Services accepting glass recyclables. “[SKM] can’t take any more [recycling] without breaching their permits with the EPA.”

Brimbank council said it is working with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group to assess its immediate and long term options. SKM provides recycling services for more than 30 councils, collecting about half of Victoria’s kerbside recyclables. Councils have been bracing for the worst after SKM founder Giuseppe Italiano recently warned he was closing the business. SKM has previously warned that up to 400,000 tonnes a year of paper, glass and plastic could go to landfill if it folds.

Teaching: a family affair By Tate Papworth A trio of teachers from Sunshine have taken their ideas for family engagement in education to the other side of the world. The Sunshine Family School Partnership Cluster, which is comprised of representatives from St Bernadette’s, St Paul’s and St Peter’s schools was asked to present at the 2019 National Family and Community Engagement Conference in Reno, Nevada.

During the conference the Brimbank educators presented the findings of a project they undertook in 2018 with Deakin University, which explored using social media to promote conversations at home about learning. St Peter’s School family school partnership leader Grace Frazzica said the Sunshine school’s engagement methods are world class. “We are constantly thinking of ways to engage families in their children’s education,” she said. “A main one we’re using at the moment is engagement via Twitter. It’s hard to physically get parents into the school during the day because they have work, so we tweet photos and post guided questions for parents to ask when they get home. “A lot of the time when you ask a child what they did at school, they’ll say ‘nothing’, but by asking a guided question, it gets a conversation happening in the home.” The cluster, which was formed 10 year ago, meets about four times a year to discuss how to

engage families in their child’s education. Ms Frazzica made the trip with Gillian Baxter and Mareta Parsons from St Pauls and said the trio were in high demand. “The space we were talking at had about 70 seats and those were all full, we actually had

people spilling out onto the floors. “They seemed really impressed with our ideas and what we’re doing – we were even invited back for next year. “It was a good time to share some of our achievements with a wider audience.”

Winning the graffiti fight Graffiti removal cost Brimbank council about $300,000 in the 2018-19 financial year. The council says it received 655 requests to remove unauthorised graffiti during that time, but mayor Lucinda Congreve said that number is on the decline. “Council has worked hard to proactively manage and prevent graffiti, and promote a safe, clean and welcoming city,” she said. “The good news is, our proactive approach to removing graffiti, particularly in hot spots, has seen a healthy decline in the number of graffiti removal requests over the past five years – almost 40 per cent less. “Our priority is to continue this approach and prevent further unauthorised graffiti vandalism.” The council updated its graffiti and prevention management policy at its July meeting and Cr Congreve said it sets out a clear path to further reduce graffiti across Brimbank. “This policy provides a co-ordinated approach to reducing the incidence of unauthorised graffiti vandalism, and our work towards enhancing the appearance, character and pride in Brimbank’s public spaces. “Unauthorised graffiti is unsightly. In April 2018 the project partners in the Upper Stony Creek Transformation Project set out to rehabilitate a 1.2km section of Upper Stony Creek located in Melbourne’s West. The project brought together seven project partners – including Melbourne Water, the Federal and Victorian governments - and private enterprise. It was a truly wonderful vision – to re-naturalise this section of the creek that had been turned into a concrete drain some 50-plus years ago with wetlands, a revegetated creek bed, and walking paths for everyone to enjoy. The project was destined to be a first in the Southern Hemisphere. It would create a refuge for the local community – a natural cool zone for some of Melbourne’s most vulnerable communities in times of heatwave – a natural air conditioner if you will. But now works have come to a standstill. Like many projects in Brimbank, shortly after breaking ground it was discovered the e site was contaminated. Given Brimbank’s industrial heritage, contamination was not unexpected – in fact it was foreseen by the project partners, but not to this extent. The cost of remediation works for this contamination has bee en extensive. The project’s original $11.3M budget has been exhausted. What we have now is an unfinished project. Thiss is a devastating result for our commu unity. All of the project partners and agenciess have indicated that they want to keep p this project going, butt more money is needed to cover the costts to complete the remediation works and finish the job that was started. Brimbank contributes milllions of dollars in levy fees to the Susttainability Fund. We carry the burd den of historical landfills and toxic wasste issues and we get litttle back in sup pport for environmen ntal projects. We e need the Upper Stony Creek Transforrmation Project to be co ompleted. This is about more than simply re ehabilitating a waterwa ay. This is about the west and its people. It’s about cleaniing up the historic wastte issues that co ontinue to impact on our com mmunity. Now, more than ever – th his project need ds a leader. We need the Vicctorian and Fede eral governments to lead and work with us to delive er this fantasticc project for our community. Don’t walk away y from Stony Creek. Yours sincerely,

Carers hub bid gets new life

Triumph over adversity By Tate Papworth A Taylors Lakes man has been recognised for his leadership in promoting a healthy life in the face of adversity. Bradley McDougall was presented with the Kellion Victory Medal earlier this month for his ability to live a well life with diabetes for half a century. Mr McDougall was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was two and a half years old and said it’s played a role in shaping the man he is today.

“Living with diabetes is a challenge. You can succumb to having it dictate life terms to you or you can overcome and strive to be all that you want to become,” he said. “Diabetes is just another thing to manage in life but doing so equips you with amazing character.” He credited his mother, June, for setting the tone for a healthy life. “She ensured my adolescent care until I was able to take over m y own care as a teenager,” he said. Living with diabetes for more than 50 years, Mr McDougall has seen many innovations in

management and treatment techniques over the decades. He says the implementation of blood glucose meters for home use has made the biggest impact – even though his first meter was the size of an iPad. Despite the obstacles, Mr McDougall hasn’t let diabetes stand in the way of achieving lifelong goals. He achieved his dream of becoming an aircraft maintenance engineer and in doing so became the first person with type 1 diabetes to join the Victorian Air Training Corps, a cadet program of the Australian Defence Force.

There is renewed hope that a carers hub could be established in Brimbank. In early July, carer advocate Despina Havelas told Star Weekly that Brimbank’s carers were in urgent need of a hub. “There’s been plenty of times that I’ve been exhausted and alone,” she said. “A hub would give people in the same situation a chance to speak to others, to know they’re not alone, to find important information and to find agencies.” Despite the pleas, Brimbank community wellbeing director Kath Brackett said a council feasibility study, endorsed at the council’s meeting in December, 2018, didn’t support the concept. But during its July meeting, a number of councillors voiced their support for a hub. Cr Virginia Tachos said it was clear there was a gap that needed to be addressed. “I’m hearing that there’s a strong voice out there that wants us to explore a carers hub,” she said, “There is a very strong need, I feel, that these people need to connect, share knowledge and support each other. Whilst we aim to make all our facilities and spaces disability friendly, there is still a gap.” Councillors John Hedditch, Margaret Giudice and Duyen Anh Pham also spoke in support of a hub. Cyclist killed

A cyclist was killed in a suspected hit-run in Taylors Lakes on Wednesday. Emergency services were called to the Melton Highway at McCubbin Drive in Taylors Lakes about 6.40am. The male cyclist died at the scene. It is believed the driver did not stop but came forward to police later that morning.

Class of healthy minds Monmia Primary School is encouraging its community to “be you”. Be You is a Beyond Blue program which aims to provide educators with knowledge, resources and strategies to help children and young people achieve their best possible mental health. Monmia was the first school in the country registered to the program and to celebrate, representatives of the organisation last week presented the school with special signage. which also celebrated the opening of its new library. “It was a massive day for the whole school,” she said. “We kicked it off with the visit from Beyond Blue in the morning, then launched straight into the opening of our new library, which looks absolutely amazing – we’ve had a lot of comments on it already.” The school has a long history of leading the way in mental health initiatives and was also one of the first to sign up to Beyond Blue’s previous program for educators – Kids Matter. Peak hour traffic was thrown into chaos after a car crashed into a power pole and brought down lines in Sunshine North last Tuesday. McIntyre Road was closed to traffic for several hours while crews worked to repair the lines throughout the morning. Emergency services confirmed a female driver was taken to Footscray Hospital for observation. She was said to be in a stable condition.

Cr Margaret Giudice said the council will continue to push for funding for the centre despite the silver rating. “We thank the state and federal governments for all their initiatives, but will continue as a council to advocate for our gold, silver and bronze initiatives here,” she said.

“They are all, in my mind, equally important as each other, it’s just that we happen to put them in some order. “Of course it would be needless to say that we will still advocate for funding for our St Albans Leisure Centre, even though it’s been downgraded to silver, but I don’t think we’re going to stop the advocacy on that.” The council has had little luck in securing funding for the project. Its application for a $3 million Better Pools Grant was knocked back by the state government last November and a $5 million

election promise of funding from the federal Labor Party never came to fruition after its shock election defeat. Despite the lack of funding, the council is determined that construction on the project will begin in June 2020. However it’s not the first time the council has set a date for works. A report in 2017 slated construction to begin in April 2019 and to be completed in December, 2020. That report estimated the cost of the centre to be $50 million, but that has since ballooned out to more than $60 million.

Library a lab for learning All things science will be celebrated at Brimbank libraries during the next two weeks. Brimbank council has packed its events calendar with science-themed events to mark National Science Week, which runs from August 10-19. National Science Week is held annually to celebrate science and technology across Australia. Last year, more than 1.2 million people across the country participated in events aimed at encouraging younger people to learn about the world they live in. Brimbank’s science week celebration will kick-off on August 6, with a trivia session from 2-3pm. Other events include a Chameleon Putty workshop at St Albans library on August 7; a bubble science workshop at Sydenham library on August 8 and hands-on science experiments at St Albans, Deer Park and Sunshine libraries

Support for new mums New mums who give birth at the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital can now access breastfeeding support in their own language. The Australian Breastfeeding Association’s western Melbourne group recently donated education booklets about breastfeeding to the new hospital. The booklets are available in Chinese, Karen/Burmese, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish and Vietnamese and will be available on the postnatal wards, special care nurseries and from the lactation clinic. Australian Breastfeeding Association member Sharon Phillips said the booklets would help support women in their breastfeeding while at the hospital.

“We want to support women across the west and help them to access all the information they will need,” she said. “The booklets are based on the feedback we get from the national helpline and cover what parents commonly want to know. “The books cover a whole range of topics including feeding babies who are in the special care nursery and multiple births. They are also an educational resource for midwives.” The association also runs peer support groups and antenatal classes, as well as hosting drop-in and information sessions. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I have lived in the west for 67 years and proud of the connection. I wouldn’t live anywhere else. What do you like best about it? I love the western suburbs, the people. I just love it all. I could move away, but I love it here too much. What could be done better? I am of the opinion that not enough is done to create situations where our new immigrants can mix with each other and fellow Aussies and help with the difficulties of coming to a new country. Back in the ’60s and ’70s we used to have a parish ball, which was very successful. The main thing for me was

that it got the community together. There were a lot of new Australians back then and people sort of kept to their own communities. The ball got everyone together and I’m looking to revive that. What sort of crowd are you looking to attract? I wanted to do something for the older community. There’s a lot of things around for the younger generation, but not as much for ours. Dinner dances aren’t around as much as they used to be. We’re happy to have all ages, but I’m thinking it’ll attract an older crowd. What will the night look like? The music will be from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. It’s a three course meal and a bit of fun. And the money goes to a good cause? I didn’t want to make any money out of it, so I decided to donate the money to Kids with Cancer Foundation. I looked around and the work they do is phenomenal. What the e-waste ban means for you

Cr Bob Turner A new regional hub for shopping, services, food and entertainment is being planned for Cobblebank, together with an employment area, and Council is inviting you to have your say as part of this exciting development. Council has drafted two Urban Design Frameworks that set the vision for development in Cobblebank over the next 30—40 years, and ensure it becomes a lively hub of activity that serves the whole community.

New electronic waste rules introduced on 1 July mean that anything with a cord or battery cannot go in any bin. To help residents comply, Melton City Council is accepting old home appliances, mobile phones, car batteries, white goods, electronic toys and more to the Melton Recycling Facility for free. E-waste (or electronic waste) is growing three times faster than standard local waste and it contains potentially hazardous and valuable materials that should be kept out of landfill. To recover more precious resources and help protect the environment, the State Government introduced an e-waste ban on 1 July. Recovered e-waste will be carefully disassembled and suitable components will be shredded, sorted and repurposed to be used in new batteries, electronics, homewares and more. Council encourages minimising e-waste as the first step towards a greener future. This includes repairing rather than replacing devices, and donating or selling unwanted electronics that are still working. You can easily protect your privacy before selling or dropping off an old phone or computer by removing all personal data and performing a factory reset. Cr Yvonne Sebire Firstly, I’d like to thank the people of Melton for the opportunity to represent them as the new Councillor for Coburn Ward. Melton is a great place. I’ve lived here for over 20 years, and have seen it grow into the wonderful community it is today. I know many people who have contributed to making this City vibrant and diverse, and hope as your local representative, I can do the same. As a resident, and now a Councillor, I’ve always embraced in the opportunity to help others, and am passionate about creating an inclusive community, where everyone is safe and has access to the services and facilities they need to live healthy, happy lives. I’m particularly keen on advocating for better bus and public transport services, safer roads and more jobs so residents can work locally and spend more time with friends and family.

On a personal note, I have three beautiful daughters, who were all raised right here in Melton. I’m also an avid crafter, having attended Council’s Home Sewn arts program. In fact, Council is currently hosting the Home exhibition, bringing together a range of contemporary and traditional textile pieces created by established and emerging artists, many of whom took part in Home Sewn workshops. The Deer Park Community Health Centre’s committee of management has started a protest campaign against the Health Commission’s plan to introduce fees for the use of the service. The committee has called on the support of the community as it strongly disagrees with the proposed change of policy.

Mr George Herscu’s privately-owned Hersfield Developments Corporation was put into receivership in the wake of Hooker Corporation’s collapse, as his $350 million Sunshine project – the largest in Australia – was given the go-ahead last week.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a flavour hit at a Footscray mainstay What an ornament to Footscray Littlefoot has become. The first bar to set up shop in Footscray central, Littlefoot continues to carry a kitchen, unlike most of its neighbouring bar fellows. We are happy to accept an invitation to take the new winter menu for a run (see full disclosure below). On this night, Team CTS consists of myself, Bennie, Justin and Will. We eat well and deeply, coming away happy and satisfied. Some of the tucker is right there in bar food mode – the sort of things you’d be happy to get a bite of if you were imbibing at Littlefoot anyway. But some things we think are on another, higher level – making Littlefoot a food destination in its own right. The charcuterie board ($25) is a good starter for us – tonight we are hungry lads. It’s mix of sour, salty, oily and chewy would also be an ideal light meal for two. The DIY taco board ($18) is a hit. The four fish pieces – snapper – are superbly crumbed and deep-fried, holding together beaut even under the strain of taco construction. The flesh is both firmish and delicate. Of the bits and pieces, it’s the red cabbage that adds tangy contrast. It’s joined by guacamole, jalapenos, lime and swathes of fresh coriander. Just as expertly fried are the mac ‘n’ cheese croquettes ($12) – this is glorious stodge. Could’ve done with a bit more seasoning, IMO.

The burgers are available in three modes – Littlefoot, Wild West and Bulldogs. The beef burger ($20) comes in Bulldog garb of cheese, pickles, red onion, pickle, lettuce and “special burger sauce”. This handy handful is accompanied by good chips. If anything, our jackfruit burger ($20) is more noteworthy for the simple reason it offers an alternative to lentil patties and the like. It’s done out in Wild West style – and that means a zingy combo of jalapenos, sriracha, caramelised onions, mustard, cheese, tomato and lettuce. Another flavour hit – of the snacky variety – is provided by the lip-smackingly good edamame ($7) with garlic and black pepper. Beer food supreme.

SPORT Keilor counts itself lucky as poor kicking takes its toll

A wasteful Keilor still did enough to come away with the points against Avondale Heights in Essendon District Football League premier division. The Blues dominated the scoring shots with 30 to just 10, but Avondale Heights was in the game until the final quarter. The Blues held on to win 10.20 (80)-9.1 (55). Blues coach Mick McGuane said they could not get away with such poor kicking against the top sides. “It was a good win,” he said. “We had 30 shots … which was the only downside of the performance. “It was a different game style with more of a stoppage game. “They were able to convert their chances and kept the game close. “Once we were able to get the game on our terms we had multiple entries and they struggled to get it out.” McGuane was left frustrated by the side’s

kicking at goal – Keilor kicked 1.9 in the final quarter alone. “We shot ourselves in the foot,” he said. “The players have standards and we’re not letting them off the hook. “Against the likes of Abers and Greenvale in the next couple of weeks, we can’t afford to miss them.” Matthew Clark kicked four for the Blues, and Dylan Joyce two. Dean Galea had a rare day not kicking a goal, missing several shots. McGuane said it was a team performance. “We had a number of contributors in fits and spurts.” The win was the Blues’ 13th of the season and they remain undefeated on top of the ladder. They have all but sealed a top-two spot with five rounds remaining. “We’re more than satisfied with the building of the season,” McGuane said. “We’ve earned the right to be where we are.” Scarily for other teams, the Blues are nowhere

near full strength. McGuane said if luck went their way a number of players would return in coming weeks. “We’re still a few numbers away from our best 22. There will be pressure on for spots,” he said. Among those still missing are Damien Cavka, Bradley Xavier, David Gourdis, Stefan Radovanovic, Nicholas O’Kearney and Mitchell Ellis. Nash Holmes, who is playing VFL, is another player missing. McGuane will remain at the Blues for another two seasons. He said the club had backed him in to continue on. “I’ve been here a long time and sometimes you have to question how long is long enough,” he said. “They were adamant that another two years was in the realms of possibility.” Tara Murray

Thunder misses finals shot

Saints set for finals test By Lance Jenkinson St Albans will run a gauntlet that will go a long way to indicating it is September-worthy in Western Region Football League division 1. The final month of the Saints’ regular season will be daunting – they will face three of the top four sides in the last four games. But coach Perry Meka believes that will be a perfect gauge of their standing. “If we win those games, we’ll play finals in form,” Meka said. “If we don’t, there’s no use in playing finals because we’re not up to it.” St Albans had to withstand a stern examination from the gallant Sunshine Kangaroos at a muddy Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday to remain nestled in the top five. The Saints were trailing by four points at three-quarter time before turning it on with a six-goal-to-two final quarter. “These boys have got some character,” Meka said. “A few of the old committee men came up to me after the game and said the old St Albans would’ve lost that game.

“We were 12 points down at one point during the last quarter and then we ran over the top of them.” David Kovacevic produced another best-on-ground performance in the ruck for St Albans. Kovacevic rucked one-out all game and had a major influence on the outcome. Meka is adamant the man he calls “Kov” should be in the discussion surrounding the Priest Medal for best and fairest at season’s end. “I’d be disappointed if he’s not at least in the top three because he’s had a sensational season for us,” he said. Jarrod Tuppen was outstanding as a key defender for St Albans. At the other end, Ben Said and Lachlan Calder jagged three goals each. Youngster Mouhammed Chandab was asked to take on a lock-down role on Sunshine danger man Lachlan Smart and did a fine job. “It was his first senior game for the year,” Meka said. “He just played a role, a lock-down role, and was sensational. He copped a couple

of elbows that went astray, but he got up and kept going.” St Albans will continue its push for the finals this Saturday when it hosts second-placed Spotswood at Kings Park Reserve. Elsewhere in division 1, Deer Park has lost back-to-back games for the second time this season. The Lions went down by 34 points to Hoppers Crossing in a disappointing game away at Hogan Road Reserve. Caroline Springs made it three wins in four with a 64-point victory over Albion under lights at JR Parsons Reserve. In division 3, Albanvale was merciless in its dismantling of cellar dweller North Sunshine, winning by 345 points at Robert Bruce Reserve. The Cobras, who had 15 individual goal kickers, finished with a cricket score of 54.35 (359). Kym Taylor led the way for the Cobras with 11 goals. Sunshine Heights was upset by a spirited Wyndham Suns, losing by 15 points.

Keilor Thunder has missed out on the Big V basketball men’s state championship playoffs by the finest of margins. The Thunder’s fade-out 116-105 loss to McKinnon Cougars in the final round at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday consigned them to a fifth-placed finish. Last year, finishing fifth would have sent the Thunder to the playoffs, but fewer teams this season cut the playoff spots from six to four, so luck was not on their side. The Thunder finished one game outside the top four. It was an arm-wrestle for three quarters between Keilor and McKinnon on Sunday but the Cougars held a slender two-point lead at three-quarter time. However, the Cougars proved too strong in the last period, out-scoring the hosts 29 to 20. Mike Anderson finished his first season as Keilor import on a high note with 37 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Anderson was a stat machine for the Thunder, averaging 24.3 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. B.J. Symons had a superb game with 25 points and seven rebounds, while Daniaell Herbert provided 15 points. In the women’s state championship, Keilor Thunder defeated Casey Cavaliers 80-70 at Keilor Basketball Stadium on Saturday night. Genna Anderson was the key for the Thunder with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Erin Bollmann, Ellen Kett and Aneta Bandilovski all reached double figures in points. Although not mathematically out of promotion contention, the Georgies seem to have left their hot run too late. But they are building rock-solid foundations for next season under new coach Eric Vassiliadis. A remarkable come-from-behind 3-2 win over Altona City at City Vista Recreation Reserve on Saturday evening was the Georgies’ fourth victory in five games. The Georgies made it five games unbeaten when they banged on three unanswered goals in the second half to overcome a two-goal half-time deficit. Georgies captain George Tsiakalakis can see that his team is in a hurry to improve. “We’re 100 per cent planning for next year – that’s the direction the club has gone in,” Tsiakalakis said.

The Georgies played their final game at their former ground, the historic Chaplin Reserve. It was a sad day for the Georgies faithful, but one for which they had waited a long time as it meant they could finally move into their elegant new digs in City Vista Crescent. Tsiakalakis has been involved with the Georgies for three years, so he knows both sides of the story. “There is more of a vibe around the club now,” he said. “The other ground wasn’t special to go to. Yeah, it had history, but it didn’t have character. “Here, it’s the start of a culture, whereas at the other ground, it was get to the ground, get training done and get out. “People want to stick around now and they want to be a part of it.” Tsiakalakis is ecstatic with Caroline Springs’ new home. “Our whole facility, with what it’s got for the

juniors and the seniors, it’s one of the best in the whole of Victoria,” Tsiakalakis said. Tsiakalakis, a centre back, is a young captain at 23 years. A championship winner at St Albans Saints and Richmond, he is thrilled to be leading Caroline Springs into a new era. If ever Tsiakalakis is feeling nostalgic about the old days at Chaplin Reserve, he knows where to turn. “Our physio [John Murphy] has been with the club for 30-odd years and there’s some others who have been around for a long time and they will tell you their stories,” Tsiakalakis said. “On this ground, this happened, or in this changeroom this happened, or there was a punch up here or a guy scoring a winning goal. “There’s history attached to the old ground and people are still talking about it.” Lance Jenkinson

By Lance Jenkinson Melbourne Knights have endured a one step forward, two steps back Saturday in the National Premier League. The Knights experienced a bittersweet feeling after a 1-1 draw with title contenders Green Gully Cavaliers on the road at Green Gully Reserve. They were disappointed not to come away with all three points considering how well they executed their game plan, but would generally have taken a point from a tough away venue if offered it. The true cost of the Knights’ inability to hold on for all three points became clear later in the night when they found themselves a hefty four points outside the top six with three rounds to play after sixth-placed Oakleigh Cannons upset top-of-the-ladder Avondale. Knights player-coach Marijan Cvitkovic said his side did most things right against Green Gully, but could not seal the deal because of a defensive lapse. “We did well I thought,” he said. “We created a lot of good chances going forward. “We purposely sat back because we knew the game plan Gully have … forward balls over the top. “So we thought if we could sit back a bit and stay compact, we could kill that off a bit and it worked. “We’re a bit unfortunate. They broke and scored from one opportunity … the way we assumed they would, which is disappointing.” The Knights opened the scoring in the 69th minute with a goal that would have been fitting for a winner, AJ Inia producing a piece of individual brilliance to set up Anthony Duzel. Inia gained possession in the defensive third, jigged past Gully midfielder Jay Davies at the halfway line and then toe-poked the ball ahead to avoid a tackle from Gully defender Daniel Jones. He regained possession in the front third to produce a delicious cross to Duzel, who coolly slotted it home. It was a goal that provided a glimpse into Inia’s bright future. “He’s got lightning pace,” Cvitkovic said. “He’s one of the quickest boys in the league. He’s one to watch for the future.” But Green Gully would not be denied. The fourth-placed Cavaliers produced a similarly impressive goal for the equaliser. It all started with an interception from Matthew Breeze, who moved the ball to Teeboy Kamara on the right wing. Kamara avoided a slide tackle, remained composed and calmly found Alex Salmon in the box. The City West Falcons and Geelong Cougars rivalry will go up a notch in the Victorian Netball League championship division finals. The top-two ranked sides will face off in a mouth-watering semi-final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday for a shot at the season decider. Who would have thought during the global fuel crisis of the 1970s that less than fifty years later motorists would be laughing in the face of the avaricious petrol barons at the demise of the internal combustion engine? The time has not come yet, but if the development of electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf continues, that day is just around the corner. The Leaf first saw the light of day in 2010, arriving in Australia two years later. Since then more than 410,000 have been sold in 51 markets, making it one of the most popular electric vehicles in the world. In those days a 24kWh lithium-ion battery gave the Leaf a range of 170 kilometres. The new second generation Nissan Leaf, with its 40 kWh 350V battery, is capable of travelling 270 km with no nasty tailpipe emissions. Plugging into a 15A 240V home wall socket the Leaf will recharge from ‘battery low’ warning to full charge in around 24 hours. Alternatively, depending on the fast charger used, it takes about 7.5 hours from empty or with the more powerful box to 80 per cent full from low warning in just 60 minutes. But more than that, the Leaf has the capability of returning power from its battery to the grid for home or business use. This means the car can be charged during off-peak periods, say overnight, and plugged in to the home to power the kettle, cooker or even hairdryer in the morning high-rate period. Alternatively, the Leaf can be charged ‘on the run’ at any of 783 public stations around Australia, of which 69 are of the quick variety, doing the job in 60 minutes. A feature of the set-up is the operation of the e-Pedal, which at the flick of a switch on the centre console, allows the vehicle to be driven using the accelerator alone.
