Cops driven to anger By Tate Papworth Brimbank police were left shaking their heads at driver behaviour during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Brimbank led the state for infringements with more than 1000 traffic offences detected during Operation Regal, which ran from June 7 to 10. Eighteen vehicles were impounded, most for excessive speed, and 11 drink and drug drivers were caught. Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Bill Joannidis said two high readings recorded on the first day of the operation were of particular concern.

“We had a 27-year-old female from Taylors Lakes record a blood alcohol reading of 0.160 per cent (more than three times the limit) and a 31-year-old male from Taylors Hill, who recorded 0.155 per cent,” he said. “This male, despite being three times over the limit, was also detected going 30km/h over the speed limit. “Speeding is dangerous. Driving alcohol-affected is dangerous. “Together they are a recipe for disaster … luckily he was intercepted before he seriously injured or killed someone.” The wild weekend on Brimbank roads culminated with a large “hoon gathering” in Keilor Park. Highway Patrol units blocked the cars in at Harrick Road and obtained the details of all drivers and passengers present at the event. Police expect about 300 people to be issued with $800 fines under a Brimbank council by-law that prohibits attending such events. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council’s tough stance on hoon behaviour was reaping results. “The community has been consistently supportive of any efforts to reduce hooning in the streets of Brimbank,” Cr Congreve said. “The prospect of a fine seems to be working as incidents of hooning events in Brimbank – including complaints to council – have reduced since the introduction of this local law.” Under the law, Victoria Police members are authorised by the council to issue infringement notices.

Professional wrestling will return to Albion next month to crown the King of the Cage. Callen Butcher, who will headline the show’s main event, said it was the biggest event on New Age Wrestling’s calendar. “Every bout is contested in a cage,” he said. “It’s been our main show since inception and there’s always a bit that goes into it.” Butcher said the card was full of exciting bouts. “We’ve got a five by five main event, where wrestlers keep entering the ring, and a triple threat match for the women’s title, which features three of the best female wrestlers in the country,” he said. King of the Cage will be held at 27 Talmage Street, Albion, on July 6. Doors open at 6.30pm. “We’re hoping that with this being our biggest show of the year, that we’ll sell every seat in the house,” Butcher said. “This is the sort of event that will show people that we belong in the conversation when it comes to professional wrestling in Melbourne.” New Age Wrestling was founded in 2004. ‘Fruitless’ meeting angers locals By Tate Papworth A residents group fighting a proposed Kealba development has described a community meeting to discuss the plans as “often heated and uncomfortable”. A spokesperson for the Kealba Residents Against Over Development group said a meeting last week of residents, a town planner and representatives of the proposed development on Driscolls Road failed to clear up concerns about the proposal. The spokesperson said members of the group

were able to raise their issues, but the tone of the meeting was often heated and uncomfortable. “It was made very clear by the developers … they have the ability to develop to the full extent the planning provisions will allow,” the spokesperson said. “We talked about concerns with the

local school and perhaps obscuring windows overlooking the school in a show of good faith. “We also made it very clear that we’re not opposed to the development at all. We’re not asking for a school, or a park, we’re simply saying that the current plans don’t fit the community. “They’re tiny blocks. Instead of putting 208 townhouses on the site, we’re hoping for larger blocks at the perimeter and the townhouses in the middle.” A planning forum was to be held at Brimbank

council chambers today, where residents could again air their concerns before the council votes on the proposal next Tuesday. In the event that the proposal is rejected, the developer can take the matter to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. “The tribunal can only really make a decision based on point of law, so we’re hoping that if this does go to VCAT we can reach an outcome that satisfies everyone,” the group spokesperson said. “We just want a development that better fits in with the community and to be consulted on it.”

Watergardens upgrade going to plan

Cricketers embark on a UK crusade Two Braybrook students are off on a cricket tour that is the stuff of dreams. Bol Abiem and Chiem Mayoum are going on the Crusaders’ tour of the UK, including 32 matches in 26 days. The touring squad will play on some of the best grounds in the world, including Lenheim Palace, Robertsbridge, Lord Sheffield’s ground (the origin of the Sheffield Shield), Whitgift School and Lords. But Chiem is looking forward to a different sort of highlight.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting the Queen,” Chiem said. “We get to play against the Royal Household at Windsor Castle, so that will be an amazing experience.” Crusaders Cricket Australia runs various programs and tours to promote cricket. Chiem and Bol, both off-spin bowlers, began their cricketing careers at Sunshine Heights Cricket Club. Bol said the club had been like a home away from home.

“The club has really good coaches and have really helped us out,” he said. “And with the Crusaders, we’ve had some great opportunities, like coaching from former Australian players and the chance to train weekly at the MCG. “It’s been a really great opportunity and I can’t wait to be playing in all the different conditions.” The Crusaders depart Melbourne later this week and return on July 17.

Works on Watergardens’ $50 million transformation have begun. Centre manager Joe Galea said works are progressing well, although there are some restrictions on parking. “The delivery of The Marketplace is occurring alongside improvements to the eastern section of the centre’s carpark adjacent to The Marketplace development,” Mr Galea said. “These carpark works are designed to enhance customer convenience by flattening the carpark’s slope, among other amenity improvements, and while final timings are still to be confirmed, we anticipate they will conclude by the 2019 September school holidays.” Mr Galea said while disruptions are unavoidable, plans have been put in place to keep them to a minimum. “We are delivering the evolution of Watergardens in a responsible manner, and as part of our robust preparation process and in conjunction with traffic management and wayfinding specialists, we have developed a range of management plans designed to minimise the impact of these works on our community,” he said. “We are committed to keeping our community informed as works progress, and we encourage community groups that are interested in what this next stage of evolution means for Watergardens, to reach out to us at centre management on 9361 5511.”

Anger builds over failed lights bid By Tate Papworth Garry Clancy led a sporting life, but an accident at a notorious Ballarat Road intersection in 2015 changed all that. Mr Clancy, a resident of Federation Village, said he went to cross the road, like he’d done many times before, but things went horribly wrong. “It was a dark, nasty old day and I was crossing the road to get the bus,” he said. “I looked both ways and thought it was safe to cross. There was no traffic in sight and all of a sudden a car came from out of sight, speeding like hell, and collected me.

“I was gone for all money. The helicopter came and took me to the Royal Melbourne and I’m telling you, you could’ve put the house on the fact I was going to die.” Although he survived, Mr Clancy has been left with significant injuries. “I’m in rehabilitation and I’m suffering really badly,” he said. “It’s destroyed my life. “I haven’t had much of a life since then. I’ve got rods in my legs and back and I’m destroyed downstairs continence-wise. I can’t walk properly, I can’t stand up. It’s chronic pain.” Adding to Mr Clancy’s frustration is the fact that an ongoing push to have lights installed at the Hulett Street and Ballarat Road intersection has continually failed to gain funding from the state government. Brimbank council has been unsuccessfully advocating for safety improvements along

Kealba fire

More than 30 firefighters were required to extinguish a garage fire in Kealba earlier this month. Crews arrived to the Nebula Court house in less than five minutes and found the double-storey garage fully ablaze. The fire was declared under control within 40 minutes.

Hard waste collection on the way By Tate Papworth Hard waste collection is now just a phone call away. Brimbank council’s new at-call hard waste collection service will begin on July 1. Under the new service, residential properties in Brimbank are entitled to one free hard waste collection each financial year. The system replaces the previous hard waste collection period. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the new service offers extra convenience.

“Bookings have opened for the new At-Call Hard Waste Collection Service – but there’s no need to rush,” Cr Congreve said. “The beauty of this new service is that you get to choose when you want us to collect your hard waste. “All residential properties are entitled to one no charge at-call service each financial year – this means you have 12 months to make your booking.” Households will be able to have up to four cubic metres of hard waste and two cubic metres of green waste collected as part of the

service. Additional “user pays” collections are available for those who require more than one collection a year. The council endorsed the decision to move towards an at-call system during its October meeting last year. Then mayor Cr Margaret Giudice said the decision was made following community consultation. “We asked our residents how they want their waste to be managed in Brimbank, and a point that came back strongly was that they wanted

an improved waste management service with a stronger focus on recycling services and programs,” Cr Giudice said. “We acknowledge that the current annual collection service is a much loved, regular and familiar service in this community, however, the at-call model offers an improved service delivery – so residents will get what they already have, plus more.” To book a collection visit www.hardwaste. brimbank.vic.gov.au or phone 9249 4728. Dance school on pointe A dream of teaching a new generation of dancers has paid off for Rebecca Magazzu, with her Taylors Hill dance school celebrating its 10th anniversary. When Ms Magazzu opened Constellation Dance Academy, the small school offered just a few classes in Cecchetti ballet, jazz, contemporary and Pilates. Ms Magazzu said when she opened the school, she wanted to create a dance academy that had a point of difference. Ten years on, two of the school’s original dancers still train with Ms Magazzu. “It’s more like a family rather than a competition school. We do place importance on the ballet exams, but for most of our dancers, it’s all about fun,” she said. Ms Magazzu, who has been dancing since she was a child, said opening her own school was a natural progression. “Opening the school was a way for me to pass

on my knowledge and passion for dancing to other people,” she said. “Dance for us is a passion, a way to express ourselves, have fun and stay fit.” Constellation Dance Academy celebrated its 10th anniversary on Friday with a mid-year dinner dance and will continue the celebrations at its end of year concert in November. Big changes to Sunshine Leisure Centre

Medical help is on hand By Tate Papworth Catholic Regional College North Keilor is taking the term “giving back” to a new level. On a trip to the Philippines next month, 10 year 10 students accompanied by two teachers and a priest will help build some much-needed infrastructure. Teacher Melissa Desieno, who will be making the trip, said it had been a long time in the making. “This is something we’ve wanted to do for a while,” she said. “I’d been to the Philippines and had some contacts over there from when I volunteered.

“We’re going for 10 days during the July holidays and we’ll be helping locals renovate a medical centre.” While it will be a tough task, the students have already put in a number of hours towards the cause. “We were encouraged to raise as much money as we could in the lead-up to the trip so we could actually buy the resources we need to do this,” Ms Desieno said. “We had Rotary come in every Friday and help us out with a barbecue. Through selling sausages to the kids we’ve managed to raise $3000.” Ms Desieno said that while it would be a rewarding experience, it would also

be confronting. “It’s definitely going to be confronting. I think it’s about 75 per cent of people over there live below the poverty line,” she said. “We’re doing our best to prepare them for what they’re going to see. “I think the priest who is going with us summed it up best when he said it will be confronting, but it will also be enriching. “We’re hoping to do this yearly going forward, especially given the amount of interest we’ve had. “The students have all really got behind it, Rotary has been fantastic and the parents have also been super supportive.”

The Sunshine Leisure Centre will undergo a facelift over the coming months. Works on a new cafe will start tomorrow with the old cafe space to be converted into a merchandise stand. In addition, the indoor leisure pool, spa and indoor changerooms will be closed for a six-week period starting from July 1 while maintenance and renovation works are completed. The 25-metre indoor pool, outdoor pool, gym and group fitness room will stay open for business, as will the recently upgraded outdoor changerooms. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said there would still be plenty of reason to visit the leisure centre this winter. “We want to realise the full potential of Sunshine Leisure Centre and we’ve been making a number of improvements at the centre over recent times – and these are set to continue,” she said. “We’ve introduced a year-round swimming trial in the outdoor pool; soon we’ll be introducing Spin classes; and we’re making improvements to provide 24/7 gym access later this year. “While these works take place there will be no access to the leisure pool, spa and indoor changerooms, but everything else will still be open.” Tate Papworth

Station’s nod of approval By Tate Papworth The new and improved St Albans station is in line for a prestigious architectural award. Once labelled as having one of the most dangerous level crossings in the state, the station has undergone a drastic transformation and has been shortlisted by the Australian Institute of Architects for an award in the public architecture category. The station was designed by Hassell with the brief to remove the level crossing and improve the flow of traffic through the station and Main Road. Hassell associate Alix Smith said the final design went beyond that. “This is a station that stitches St Albans’ Main Road back together and creates a safe, open and civic space for the community,” she said. “It’s a station that doesn’t look or feel like any other on the rail network, and has revitalised the community.” Ms Smith said the design has also improved safety. “We’ve made sure the station ties in with bike paths in the area so people don’t have to necessarily drive to the station and worry about parking,” she said. “Underneath the canopy there’s an open concourse with clear sightlines for staff and passengers and there’s also added platforms and lifts to improve safety throughout the station.” The canopy is also a unique feature. “A lot of new stations use the same consistent canopy, but we really wanted this one to reflect the unique St Albans feel,” Ms Smith said. “The large reflective canopy installed really makes the station stand out as a centrepiece of the town.” Award winners will be announced on June 28.

Travel warning as line closes Ballarat line commuters are being warned to plan for extended travel times, when trains stop running for two weeks as works at Rockbank station ramp up. The Ballarat line will shut down between June 24 and July 7 for a two-week work blitz across the line. Rockbank station will be out of service from July 8 and trains will not stop to drop off or pick up passengers until late August. The station’s existing platforms will be demolished, with two new, longer platforms to be constructed as part of a major rebuild. Part of the station’s new carpark will be open so passengers can park to catch shuttle buses, which will run every 20 minutes to and from Caroline Springs station to connect with Melbourne and Ballarat services. Taxis will be available. Rockbank station is expected to reopen in late August. It will have new platforms, ramps and stairs, platform seating and canopies, myki facilities, lighting, CCTV, a carpark with 350 spaces and a pedestrian overpass with lifts. Rockbank passengers are being asked to allow an extra 45 minutes travel time while coaches replace trains from June 24 to July 7 and an extra 15 minutes from July 8. Ewen McRae

There is currently a warrant of apprehension in existence for Hai TRAN. On April 2, 2019 TRAN failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court to answer charges including unlicensed driving, fail an oral fluid test within three hours of driving and failing to answer bail. A warrant was issued for his arrest. Police are seeking information as to TRAN’s current whereabouts.

“So I’m trying to draw some attention to the laws that are about to be debated in WA and hopefully get the law that my mum never had.” Ms Teh will spend two months on the 4500-kiloemtre trek, ending in Perth on the day the bill will be introduced into Parliament. Victoria passed assisted dying legislation in 2017. “I remember sitting in front of my computer when the Victorian bill passed and wondering why can’t we have that here,” Ms Teh said. “There’s nothing that could have been done for my mum, so this is almost making up for all the things I couldn’t do for her, but also trying to create positive change.”

Belinda Teh is putting one foot in front of the other as she strives for law changes in her home state. The 27-year-old is currently walking from Melbourne to Perth to raise awareness for assisted dying legislation in Western Australia. Ms Teh, who passed through Melton on day one of the walk, said watching her mother die from breast cancer in 2016 had been the catalyst for her campaign. “You don’t really realise what the law means until it affects someone you love – and for me that person was my mum,” she said. “My mum had terminal breast cancer, made two requests for assisted dying, but couldn’t get what she wanted and as a result she died in terrible pain.

Jesse’s talent on the run Hoppers Crossing’s Jesse Cop is chasing A-League soccer dreams. The 17-year-old striker returned last month from a five week training camp with the Genova Academy in Madrid where he learnt from some of the game’s best. “I trained every day, we played games in Madrid against other teams and academies,” Jesse said. “Our Genova team played against the Club Deportivo Leganes C-division team. “We were down 5-2 in the first half … I came on in the second half and kicked four goals and we won 7-6.” Of 55 young Australian players who attended the camp, Jesse was one of the few invited back to Madrid to trial for Spanish team Leganes La

Liga next September when he finishes VCE at Emmanuel College. “I was coached by top La Liga coaches, there were scouts there three times a week,” he said. “The scout called us aside a couple of times and asked me to come back when I am 19 years old.” Jesse said that playing abroad would be “a dream come true”. “I’ve been playing club [soccer] since 2008 but I started with my dad from the age of four,” he said. “I want to play professionally for a European club and represent my country. “I would move to Madrid in a heartbeat.” Esther Lauaki

Convicted brothers walk free By Melissa Iaria/The Age

James on target for skeet title Eighteen months ago James Sacchetta decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and take up skeet shooting. In that short space of time he’s risen to national champion after taking out the under-18 title at the 2019 National Skeet Shooting Championships last month. While it’s been a rapid ascension, Sacchetta said it has also been a lot of hard work. “I did nationals last year and didn’t go so good. I’d only just started,” he said. “But I trained a lot and knew I’d improved. I’d been shooting well in the lead-up to this event and thought I’d go a lot better.” Over the course of the event Sacchetta shot 436/540 targets to claim the championship, just one shot clear of second place (435) He said that it’s as much a psychological battle as it is skill. “It’s mostly mental, especially when you’re shooting off against someone and everybody is watching,” he said. “That’s where the training comes in, I just had to remind myself of my training and that I’d done all the work.” But Sacchetta isn’t satisfied yet. “I really want to go further with it. I’m thinking I might go to New Zealand for their national titles and possibly over to America next year for the world titles,” he said.

Two brothers have been jailed over a fatal brawl at a Caroline Springs restaurant but have been freed immediately, given time already served. Sasa Jovic, 30, and Milan Jovic, 23, were released on June 11 after being sentenced in the Supreme Court. Milan Jovic was jailed for 18 months, with a minimum of nine months, while Sasa Jovic was jailed for 16 months with a minimum eight months. Both were initially charged with murder for the fatal stabbing of 31-year-old Deni Dimovski at Caroline Springs in September 2017. But a jury cleared them of the charge and instead convicted them of affray and aggravated burglary. The victim’s mother, Snezana Dimovska, who flew from Macedonia to hear the case, broke down in tears outside court. “They stabbed him for nothing – for nothing,” she said. “When’s my son going to see the sun? “When’s my house going to be happy? “I just have one son.” Justice Michael Croucher said on Tuesday both accused were of otherwise good character and had a strong chance of rehabilitation. The pair were released after serving almost two years in custody awaiting sentence. The men’s lawyers had argued the brothers had served enough jail time and should not be punished further. Another man, Milos Novakovic, will face a plea hearing in July after he was convicted of Mr Dimovski’s murder. Last year, brothers Stefan Obradovic and Daniel Obradovic, both in their 20s, and friend Stephen Motta, escaped conviction and were ordered to do unpaid community work over the affray.

New place for e-waste

Apprentice’s heavy lifting By Esther Lauaki James Greig showed his mettle at the recent Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia National Apprentice Challenge. The heavy vehicle apprentice and teammate Brett Holland clinched first place at the national challenge last month at the Brisbane Truck Show. The challenge involved three teams from across Australia working against the clock to identify and rectify a series of faults on identical trucks.

James and Brett were chosen to represent the southern region, including Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, after claiming the top two placings at the regional qualifiers. Both are completing a certificate III in heavy commercial vehicle mechanical technology at Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence. James, who is a third-year apprentice technician at Westar Truck Centre in Derrimut, said the challenge was an invaluable experience that would help his future.

“As an apprentice, we don’t normally get to go interstate to compete in a national competition,” he said. “This was a really good experience and it’ll hopefully open a few doors for me later.” Kangan Institute chief Phill Murphy said the apprentices’ strong performance reflected their skills and passion in the trade. “Their first place win reflects the hard work they’ve put in,” Mr Murphy said. “It also reflects the skills and expertise that they’ve honed through years of training and practise at TAFE and the workplace.”

Caroline Springs residents will soon find it easier to dispose of their e-waste. E-waste is one of the fastest-growing streams of waste worldwide, and covers everything from old mobile phones, computers, audio devices, and refrigerators. Officeworks in Caroline Springs is one of 42 sites across the state to receive funding to boost the amount of e-waste it can take, as the need to properly dispose of electronic items grows. From July 1, 2019, any item with a plug, battery or cord can no longer be placed in kerbside bins and instead must be deposited at a designated e-waste drop-off point. Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced a $25.3 million funding boost last week to help keep up with demand. “We’re making sure Victorian households know how to dispose of e-waste properly and easily ahead of the e-waste to landfill ban,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. “It’s great to see businesses like Officeworks getting on board to ensure all Victorians have a convenient drop-off point. “E-waste contains valuable materials that we can recover and reuse, but if left in the wrong place, they can also harm the environment.”

I’m the co-owner of Lumbar and Co Coffee, which has been based at Brimbank Park since Christmas last year. What do you like best about the area? I love the customers. They all help me. They bring their cups back, have a chat, it’s just a beautiful place. My last shop was in Fitzroy Street and this is just a different vibe. Everyone at the park is relaxed. I just love it. And having a shopfront in the middle of a park is the best. What could be done better? The average person doesn’t know this park is here. You can’t really see in from the outside and I’d love to see it utilised a little more. You’re certainly utilising the space, tell us about the business.

We’ve had a few minor issues, but now we seem to be up and going. We’ve got our liquor licence, live music playing every second Sunday and we’re almost done with renovation to the dining area. olives all for about $20. It’ll be a great Sunday afternoon. We’ll have live music out the back and you’ll be able to watch the kids play in the park. So a real community vibe?

That’s the idea. We want this to be a place for Brimbank’s people. At the moment there’s really only pokies places and shopping malls. We’re offering a place with no gambling, no crowds, a place to escape and enjoy the outdoors.

And are there special plans for summer? Ultimately we want to do farmer’s markets, moonlight cinemas and things like that. In November we have a barbecue and blues festival with a strongman competition.

The dangerous rail crossing at the intersection of St Albans Rd and Main Rd West and Main Rd East will not get traffic lights because VicRail does not have the experts to design the necessary system. Both Keilor and Sunshine councils have made funds available but the Railway Board will not co-operate, the Member for Keilor Mr Ginifer told the Legislative Assembly last week.

Sunshine Council has agreed to actively look for a site for a new Deer Park swimming pool to replace the one it bulldozed into the ground at Sassella Park late last year. Results of a survey conducted by council show that more people want a new pool than any other single item on a list of recreation facilities ranging from rugby fields to a cinema.

A Brimbank councillor has called for the resignation of a fellow councillor as a result of a State Government inquiry. Kororoit Creek Ward councillor and deputy mayor Charlie Apap warned he would formerly ask Derrimut Ward councillor Sam Muscat to stand down from council if he did not apologise for instigating an inquiry into the Brimbank council.

Keilor MP George Seitz denied that Premier John Brumby made him a scapegoat for the scathing Ombudsman report on Brimbank Council, saying it was his time to stand down. Mr Seitz announced last week that he would not contest the 2012 state elections.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a new lunch-time favourite Could it be? That the parched desert that is eating in Keilor Park – and surrounding the Star Weekly office, in particular – is giving way to new blooms? Yes – it is so. In coming weeks, CTS will chronicle a sooper dooper Greek bakery/cake shop that has opened up in Keilor Park – and within walking distance from my office. In the meantime, The D’s Souvlaki has taken up residence in our resident brewery. We’ve been meaning to try The D’s souvlakis for a while, as they’re apparently highly regarded. But its long-time location on Matthews Avenue, over in Airport West, proved tricky for us Yarraville boys – no lunch service and a night-time drive too long when similar options abound closer to home. But the D’s crew is now on the same block as Star Weekly Weekly, lunch and dinner is being served on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays – and the the joint has hit the ground running. Indeed, it seems this classy souvlaki operation is an even better fit for the area and its brewery than the previous tenants, the Houston’s barbecue team. The D’s Souvlaki is tapping into the plethora of Keilor Park and environs workers. As well, the D’s move to a new location has pulled regular night-time customers right along. The menu is a simple, compact list absent of such accessories as chips. That’s fine by us.

It’s hosing down with rain, I arrive at an unusually (for me) late, post-noon hour and the crowds are building. But all becomes good and fine when contemplating and eating my medium lamb souvlaki ($12). This is excellent stuff – good, ungristly meat and all the usual souvlaki bits in good order. I return the following Friday and enjoy a much earlier and sunnier outlook. This time I go the medium chicken – also priced at $12. Now, chicken souvlaki – or doner or shish – is not normally my style, but journalistic duty requires variance from the previous week. But I’m happy as this, too, is a winner. If, in both cases, I have wished for more flame-induced salty crustiness, I understand that souvlaki is a dice roll of luck and timing. Continued visits to The D’s Souvlaki for this lad’s Friday lunch are a safe bet.

SPORT St Albans Saints prove a point By Lance Jenkinson It is clear for all to see that St Albans is the big improver in the Western Region Football League division 1 this season. Under new coach Perry Meka, the Saints have already exceeded the four wins they achieved last season, with 10 rounds still to play. What was not clear until last weekend was how much the Saints have improved. St Albans inflicted a shock 34-point win over six-time defending premiers Deer Park at John McLeod Reserve on Saturday to signal its intent to turn from also-ran to genuine finals’ contender this season. Meka could see all the good that St Albans was doing in the previous seven weeks. However, until the win over Deer Park, there would always be doubters, but they are slowly falling away. “I put it to the boys, it’s time to step up and beat a side above us and we did that,” Meka said. “They’re the benchmark side, no doubt. “They’ve been good for so long and they’re still good again this year. “It was great, a really good win for our club, a fantastic day.” St Albans went to the three-quarter time huddle with a handy 26-point lead. As expected, the Saints came under threat in the last quarter, but they found a way to steady the ship and power to the finish line. “They came back at us and two things could’ve happened, we could’ve got overrun and lost the game or we could’ve fell in and won the game, but we didn’t, we came back at them again, tweaked a few things and ended up kicking the last three goals,” Meka said. David Kovacevic was enormous for St Albans in the ruck. A tireless Kovacevic rucked one-out against a three-pronged Deer Park ruck unit. “He was on another level,” Meka said. “I’ve coached footy for a long time and I’ve never seen one ruckman take on three for the day and didn’t change, and he was unbelievable. “In the last quarter, when they got a couple of centre clearances, he just took control in there and got a few extra stoppages and got momentum back our way.” Jack Sims was inspirational for St Albans. He played a good old fashioned captain’s game to lead the way for the Saints. Shylo Smith had the ball on a string in

the middle and Tim Jenkins capped a fine performance with a game-high four goals. A turning point in the game was three quick goals in the third quarter from Adem Asani, which turned the momentum into St Albans’ favour. Given the enormity of the victory, Meka allowed his players to enjoy it on Saturday night, but there was no dodging the Sunday morning recovery session with such a big test coming up against top-of-the-ladder Altona at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday. “It’s a step in the right direction for our footy club and the boys need to soak it in and enjoy it and then reset at recovery,” Meka said. St Albans has moved above Deer Park on the ladder into fourth spot on percentage. Both sides are 5-3 after eight rounds. Elsewhere in division 1, Sunshine Kangaroos went down by 32 points to Hoppers Crossing, Caroline Springs could not match Werribee Districts in a 78-point loss and Albion lost the top-versus-bottom battle by 178 points. In division 3, Albanvale pummelled Sunshine Heights by 81 points and Daniel Bartolo capped a best-on-ground performance with four goals. Braybrook had a thrilling three-point win over Tarneit with Paul Cutajar-Milosev booting a bag of six goals, while North Sunshine was competitive before going down to Laverton by 30 points.

Knights’ cup full to the brim with passion and pride

Melbourne Knights have run the Victorian gauntlet, defied the odds and booked their place in the FFA Cup round-of-32. The Knights will be back on the national stage, having a ball in the pot that could mean there will be an A-League team in the opposition changerooms next time they step out for cup football. Gazing into the future was on the backburner for Knights caretaker coach Marijan Cvitkovic when his side overcame South Melbourne 4-2 in an entertaining seventh-round encounter on Wednesday night. “It was an amazing result and an amazing feeling around the club,” he said. “The scenes after the game were just something I’ve never seen in my tenure at the club and a lot of people haven’t experienced for a long time. It was just a magical night for all involved.” In their cup run, the Knights have risen to every challenge. After a 7-0 mauling of lower league Mooroolbark, the Knights overcame a tricky mid-week trip to state league club Fitzroy City, winning 3-0. The Knights faced Avondale, the hottest

team in Victorian football, and came away with a 2-1 win after extra time. That led to a derby with South Melbourne, with the Knights the better side over 90 minutes. Amid a run of poor form in the NPL, the Knights decided to make a coaching change, surprisingly axing Micky Colina. Cvitkovic stepped up as the interim player-coach and has steadied the ship. “People underestimate how difficult this cup run has been,” Cvitkovic said. Cvitkovic has been able to find something in his team – an unbreakable bond between the players. “This group has an amazing ability and amazing spirit within itself,” Cvitkovic said. “You go through years where you might be struggling and you don’t have that extra bit to get up, but the camaraderie in this group is something … we’re starting to believe in each other now.” Hamish Watson was the star of the victory over South. Watson became the first Knights player since the legendary Mark Viduka to score a hat-trick against South Melbourne.

“He deserved every bit of that hat-trick,” Cvitkovic said. “All of his goals were different with the way he finished … he showed his class and experience from playing in the A-League. “I’d be surprised if he doesn’t end up back there [in the A-League] soon.” Cvitkovic allowed himself a chance to dream about his potential next opponents in the FFA Cup. A date with local A-League clubs Melbourne Victory or Melbourne City at Knights Stadium was on the top of his wish list. “If we could get a Melbourne City or a Melbourne Victory at Somers Street, I think we’d wind back the clock with the amount of people we’d get coming to Somers Street,” he said. “It would be a fantastic scene for Victorian football.” Meanwhile, Melbourne Knights goalkeeper Harry Cakarun is set for a long stint on the sidelines after suffering a broken hand in training. Eagles coach returns with a destination in mind Stuart Clayton is ready to get back to work after being re-appointed as coach of Sunshine Eagles for a second season in Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. Clayton’s first foray into coaching the Eagles last season was a resounding success, with the team making a rare appearance in the top-flight finals. The club stalwart wants to build on that foundation and take the team deeper into the finals next summer after a semi-final exit last season. “Hopefully, next season we can go a couple of steps further than we went last season,” Clayton said. “It was a great experience and the boys now realise what we’ve got to do to get to the next level. “Hopefully, they all come back ready to put in the hard work in the pre-season. “I can’t wait to get back out there and coaching the guys and get them up and running.”

Clayton admitted that he was unsure of how his coaching would be received by the players. Having been involved with the club for a long time, building friendships along the way, Clayton needed to earn the respect of the players as a coach to be able to assert his authority. “At the start of the season, it was one of those unknowns,” Clayton said. “I had been a mate for so long, but could I go to the next level and be a coach and have that bit of discipline? They all took it on board and it’s fitted right in.” Sunshine’s finals experience was bittersweet. Clayton described the Eagles as a “destination club” for the first time in years. “Sunshine has always been one of those teams where we’ve been really good off the field, we’re great mates and love a bit of fun,” he said. “But on the field it was – if we succeeded we did, if we didn’t, it didn’t really matter. “But I think the last couple of years we’ve come to the level now where we’re really competitive and sides fear playing us. “It’s great now that we’ve got players ringing us up saying we’d love to come to Sunshine to play because you’re such a great club. “Over the years, it’s been like, we don’t want to go to Sunshine because you haven’t really been successful [in division 1], but now we’re at a stage where players are seeing we are successful and we’re a destination club.” Lance Jenkinson

Altona star is in the mix By Lance Jenkinson Altona Hockey Club young gun Connar Otterbach has never had a shortage of idols to model his game on. Since the age of seven, the 17-year-old has been guided by some passionate coaches at Altona, including current senior teammate Andrew Scanlon. Given his desire to make the Australian team, Otterbach has kept a close eye on the Kookaburras, the Australian men’s hockey team, in particular the playing style of former captain and defender Mark Knowles. “I play a similar position to him on the field and I’ve tried to look at what he does well to make myself a better player,” Otterbach said. Now Otterbach is taking on role model status of his own, with the Altona resident enjoying the honour of captaining Victoria’s under-18 team after being voted into the role by his peers. “When I got told I was captaining Victoria, I felt so honoured,” Otterbach said. “I’ve been around that group for at least five years now and just being able to take ownership and lead the younger players in the team was such a good role for me. “I was one of the older boys in the team … they were really comfortable with me stepping into the captaincy, knowing that I’ve played in the team for many years and have experience in the older age groups as well.” Otterbach will feature in Victoria’s under-21 team for a second time when he plays at the national championships in Lismore next month. It is a crucial tournament for Otterbach in his bid to guide the Big V to a title and position himself for a spot in the Australian under-21 squad. Even as one of the younger members of the travelling team, Otterbach is confident of having an eye-catching tournament. “Last year, I was pretty nervous playing with the older group because I wasn’t really sure what to expect and how much better they were going to be,” Otterbach said. “As I went on with training, I was able to grow and develop my game and just felt comfortable. “I feel confident in my ability to be able to play well over there and I’m hoping to step into more of a key role in the team this year. “They will pick an Australian squad from that tournament and the team will travel to Malaysia to play in an international tournament.” Otterbach is part of the Australian futures squad, which is made up of the nation’s top 30 players under the age of 18. He is also part of the emerging Victorian Vikings squad, which is full of young guns hoping to make the Australian Hockey League team. Otterbach, who describes his role as a free defender, felt like he was in a hockey wonderland when he was selected by Hockey Victoria to go on a tour of Europe earlier this year, playing games in Belgium and the Netherlands.

“It was the most amazing experience I’ve had with hockey so far,” he said. Otterbach is the June nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Otterbach will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist him in achieving his sports goals.

What’s up with the St Albans Saints? Ever since the calendar turned the page to June, the Saints have not been able to pick up a single point. The title-chasing Saints have lost all three games this month, including a 2-1 defeat at Churchill Reserve on Sunday to a Whittlesea Ranges side that is struggling in second last on the ladder. Despite the three-game losing streak, St Albans is perched in the top two, just two off ladder leader Werribee City, which has endured its own struggles in recent times. Is the glass half full or half empty for St Albans? The Saints’ form is dire, but they are still well and truly in the promotion mix. The Kruni Razov-coached Saints will be desperate to get out of their slump when they visit Moreland City, a side that is lurking in the rear vision mirror, on Saturday. In top tier NPL, Green Gully fought back from a goal down at half-time to settle for a 2-2 draw away to Dandenong City. Teeboy Kamara found the equaliser for the Cavaliers in the 82nd minute, while Matthew Fletcher scored in the first half. Melbourne Knights could not repeat their FFA Cup heroics from mid-week, going down 4-0 to Bentleigh Greens. The Knights went down to 10 men when scores were level after Joseph Franjic was red carded.
