Kealba townhouse fight By Tate Papworth Kealba residents have vowed to fight a proposed development of more than 200 townhouses and apartments. A group of concerned residents say the proposed development at the former Kealba Secondary College site, currently before the Brimbank council, is excessive. Kealba Residents Against Over Development spokesperson Laura Muscara said the impact on the community would be unacceptable. “We’re not against development, but we are completely opposed to a development of this

scale and what it will do to the community,” Ms Muscara said. “This plan will see at least 208 townhouses being built on a bulk scale, which is too intense and will impact on the already crowded suburban streets. “It would see more than 1000 new residents and 500 vehicles crowd into the area, which is predominantly housing blocks and detached dwellings. “We want Kealba to remain community friendly,” Ms Muscara said. The Driscolls Road site was zoned General Residential by the Government Land Standing Advisory Committee in 2016.

At the time, Brimbank council said its preferrence for the site was Neighbourhood Residential Zone with lower-density housing. The council said it considered the site inappropriate for high-density development. However, the committee disagreed and determined that solely lower-density housing on the site was an “under-development”. The rezoning decision paved the way for the current development plans. Kealba residents met councillors and St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman last week to voice their concerns about the proposal. Residents are hopeful of achieving a similar

outcome to a proposal for Keilor Park Primary School, in which a community push resulted in a plan to build 72 townhouses scrapped and replaced with 28 individual suburban residential blocks. However, it may face a stumbling block – the Keilor Park site is owned by Development Victoria, a government body, whereas the Kealba site is owned by a private developer. Full steam ahead for leisure hub By Tate Papworth Brimbank council may not have received any of the government funding it wants to transform the St Albans Leisure Centre into a state-of-the-art health and wellbeing hub – but it’s insistent construction will begin next year. The council has unveiled a master plan that requires the centre to close early next year with construction set to begin in June. “The site master plan has confirmed that in order for us to build the Health and Wellbeing Hub, the entire footprint of the current

St Albans Leisure Centre will be needed,” mayor Lucinda Congreve said. “Our plans are to close the doors to the old and tired St Albans Leisure Centre in April next year to make way for construction, which is expected to start in June, 2020 {subject to change}.” A report tabled at the council’s December 2017 meeting slated construction to begin in April of this year and to be completed in December, 2020. That report estimated the cost of the centre to be in excess of $50 million.

The cost has since ballooned out to more than $60 million. The proposal has faced setbacks, with neither the state or federal government providing any funding towards the centre, despite heavy lobbying from the council. In November last year, the state government knocked back the council’s application for a $3 million Better Pools Grant. The plan suffered a further hit with last month’s shock federal election result. Labor had promised $5 million towards the redevelopment if it formed government.

The council has allocated $17.5 million in its 2019-20 budget to the project. Cr Congreve said other options would continue to be explored. “We have been working closely with the state government to secure their support and are committed to continuing these efforts at state and federal levels,” she said. “We’re also fully committed to continuing to look for opportunities to pursue additional investment through health and sport and recreation funding applications, as well as appropriate private sector opportunities.”

Brimbank wins in the budget

Strong message for ‘Fiona’s tree’ A tribute tree in the heart of Sunshine has a colourful new look for the winter and an important message to share. The Sunshine Business Association and CommuKNITy, a knitter group, have teamed up to redecorate or “yarn bomb” the tree on the corner of Hampshire and Devonshire roads. The tree was planted following the murder of mother-of-four Fiona Warzywoda at the hands of her former defacto partner, Craig McDermott, in 2014. Ms Warzywoda had just finalised an intervention order against McDermott when

she was stabbed six times in the middle of the busy Sunshine shopping strip. McDermott was sentenced to 25 years in jail for her murder. The tribute tree has become a place for reflection and commemorative vigils. Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said he hoped the tree’s new outfit would help end the scourge of violence against women. “We want to show and educate the community that it is unacceptable for any form of violence in the family or against women,” Mr Luk said.

“Violence against women is at epidemic proportions. Devastatingly, over 12 months, on average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of intimate partner violence.” CommuKNITy spokesperson Annie Bailey said it was the fourth year the group had decorated the tree. “We redecorate Fiona’s tree every year and feel strongly about tackling family violence,” she said.

Transport, infrastructure and education are the major wins for Brimbank in last week’s state budget. The budget made good on a number of election promises, including the removal of level crossings at Fitzgerald Road, Ardeer, and at Mt Derrimut and Robinsons roads in Deer Park. The crossings were the subject of a campaign that resulted in two Brimbank councillors delivering a community petition signed by 3000 people to the office of St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman calling for their removal. The budget allocated $100 million towards separating regional and metro rail lines on the Geelong and Ballarat lines as part of the Western Rail Plan. It also reaffirmed the commitment to building the Airport Rail Link with the Sunshine super hub. In education, the budget includes funding for Sunshine College, Copperfield College, Sunshine North Primary School, Sunshine Special Development School and Victoria University Secondary College. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve welcomed the investments. “Major rail infrastructure projects across Melbourne’s west have the potential to create jobs for a new generation of workers,” she said. “Council welcomes this investment in the TAFE sector which will support many in our community to gain the skills and training needed to access these jobs. “We are also delighted to see additional investment in local schools and early childhood education.”

Caption bid gets a good hearing By Tate Papworth A negative experience has turned into an opportunity for change for Melbourne’s deaf community. In April a group of about 40 deaf people attended an advertised open captions screening of The Avengers at Village Cinemas at the Sunshine Marketplace. The group quickly realised that something had gone wrong and there were no captions. One member of the group, Alexandra McKenzie, unsatisfied with resolution of

the problem on the day, took to Facebook to express her disappointment. The post was shared almost 400 times. Ms McKenzie said the opportunity to highlight the situation had resulted in significant change. “All the noise we made has resulted in about triple the amount of captioned screenings and regular times for seven Village cinema locations across Victoria,” she said. “I was so grateful people were willing to take the time to care about the issue. I hope it can bring about lasting change.

“There’s a long way to go, but this kind of response shows the world is ready to listen to this particular issue.” Ms McKenzie said it was encouraging that Village Cinemas management was willing to listen. “Village were really receptive,” she said. “We met with them and it was really positive. They’re the only major chain in Australia that I know of that are making attempts to do this.” Ms McKenzie said she would like to see the company add an accessibility page to their website with further information for those

who need it and session times. And she said she would like to see regular deaf-friendly screenings at more venues become a reality. “I’m hoping the community continue to support us on this,” she said. “At the end of the day, a business wants to make money. If we fill up the cinemas for these sessions, then they’ll see it’s worth it. “We need to decide what we do with our money, who we give it to and who we want to support.” To support the push visit: facebook.com/ Australian.OC.Advocacy

more than six decades. They had a six-month engagement and were married on August 8, 1959. In the coming decades, they welcomed many additions to their family – six children, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. John admits that makes for a lot of occasions to keep track of. “There’s lots of birthdays, there’s Christmas, Easter, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day. There’s something every day,” he said. “But everyone is happy and that’s the main thing.” As for the secret to their long marriage, Dolly says a mutual love of fishing and each other’s company is all they’ve needed. “We love to fish together – that’s something we enjoy doing in warmer weather,” she said. “We help each other, we have fights, we have good times and bad times – that’s life.” Tate Papworth

The great Hollywood love stories usually start with a fleeting glance, a brushing of hands. But for a St Albans couple about to celebrate a 60th wedding anniversary, it started with chewing gum. At 18 years of age, John Borg hopped on to a boat from Malta by himself and headed to Australia to start a new life. A few years later, Dolly, then 15, made the same trek with her family. The two kept links to their Maltese heritage and took part in traditional concerts and acting classes – and that was how Dolly, then 18, met John. “We’d go to rehearsals twice a week,” she said. “He was there, I was single, he was single and these things happen. I was eating chewing gum, he asked for some, I said, ‘Yes’. And with the chewing gum, I caught him.” The gum may now be long gone, but the two have been stuck to each other’s sides for

Farewell after 40 years By Tate Papworth After a career spanning more than four decades, one of Brimbank’s best and bravest is about to hang up his helmet for the final time. Sunshine MFB member Geoff Audsley will work his final shift today, ending a career dedicated to saving lives and property. Mr Audsley said it was strange to think it was all coming to an end. “It’s funny, you think about what you’ll say at your retirement party, but how do you sum up 40 years in three minutes?” he said. “It’s slowly sinking in, given the nature of the work you’re constantly on different shifts, which means I’m talking to different people about it all the time.” Mr Audsley, who is a member of the industrial and road rescue team at the Sunshine station, said some of the horrors he’s seen have taken a toll. “It gets harder to see these things as you get older … you become more sympathetic,” he said. “But you have to remind yourself that there’s nothing you could have done. This person isn’t in this situation because of anything you’ve done.” While there’s been some gory parts, Mr Audsley said it’s been a joy to give four decades of service. “I love the thrill of it all,” he said. “No two days are the same, there’s a different situation every day. “There’s also the joy you get in working with and for the community.” Mr Audsley says one of his proudest moments was receiving the Australian Fire Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday honours in 2009. page of Star Weekly’s predecessor, The Advocate, in its corresponding edition 10 years ago. “I had to pinch myself when I was awarded that,” he said. However he wasn’t initially keen to join.

“I was travelling … and my dad called me to say he’d booked me in for an interview. “I figured I’d go to make him happy and if I got the job, I’d give it six months to see if I liked it. Here we are 40 years later.”

Call for action on waste crisis The Brimbank council has called on the state government to re-evaluate recycling and waste management. In a submission to the parliamentary inquiry into the current recycling and waste management crisis, the council urged the government to assess the provision of waste disposal and recycling services, among a number of other recommendations. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said Brimbank’s submission also notes the impact that historic waste and contamination issues continue to have on Melbourne’s west. “For far too long Melbourne’s west has unfairly absorbed a large portion of Victoria’s waste, the effects of which we are still feeling today,” she said. “We are asking for the storage and processing of waste to be equally and fairly distributed across the state – not just the north-west.” Cr Congreve said the recent issues with kerbside recycling highlighted the vulnerability of the industry and the significant financial pressures being placed on councils and ratepayers. “These events have the potential to derail the past 20 years of recycling efforts in Brimbank, and the community’s confidence in our ability to provide recycling services.” The state government last week pledged $35 million in its 2019-20 budget to strengthen and diversify the waste and recycling industry. Victim mourned

Abiol Atem Manyang is being mourned by the South Sudanese community after her death on Monday, May 27. The prominent cultural leader and youth mentor was killed in an alleged hit-run. She was crossing Ballarat Road in Ardeer about 6.45pm on Monday when she was hit by a car. The driver, Tom Street, 31, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday after he handed himself in and was charged over the alleged hit-run.

Ms Wood is no stranger to cake decorating, being in the industry for 20 years. “When I was getting married, I made my own wedding cake, so I took lessons and I haven’t really looked back since,” she said. Students lead the way Staff and students at Brookside College will live the message of reconciliation, following the painting of a new mural in the school foyer last week. As part of National Reconciliation Week, year 9 students joined with local indigenous artist Fiona Clarke to paint the striking mural, which depicts the indigenous flag and a series of footprints alongside a simple message of reconciliation. College principal Simon Sherlock said the mural was just one part of an increased focus on indigenous culture and understanding at the school. “We’ve started working with the Koori community, developing a Koori club … we realised that we need to do more, and we must

do more, to share the culture and the story,” Mr Sherlock said. He said the year 9 students learned about the history and culture of indigenous communities in their humanities studies. Afterwards, they said they wanted to do something that would be a testament to their commitment to reconciliation. “They did the design, looked at getting a local grant so we could have an indigenous artist come in and help us put it all together, and then came together to give us this fantastic mural,” Mr Sherlock said. “It’s become a big focus for the whole school, and something we’re really proud of.” Ewen McRae

Going back for the future

At 5am on February 20, 2019, a burglary was committed on a business premises on Ballarat Road, Sunshine. The offenders are believed to have been driving a Ford Falcon sedan which they parked near the building. The offenders have then forced entry to the rear of the building and attempts were made to steal property within. Police are seeking assistance in identifying the depicted males.

Kororoit Creek and its surrounds will soon be teeming with fresh plant life and colour. The Friends of Kororoit Creek have unveiled a series of ambitious projects centred around improving the creek, following a river health grant from Melbourne Water. FOKC president Jessica Gerger said one of the highlights is the Lizard Lounge – a hectare of full riparian woodland restoration in the depths of urban Sunshine. “It’s an open woodland and grassland with occasional tree, which is what we think the landscape would’ve looked like before the land was developed,” Ms Gerger said. “We’re basically trying to restore what it would’ve looked like thousands of years ago.”

The community group has had some help from some young hands along the way. The group is working with six local schools, including Sunshine Primary and Mother of God in Ardeer, who have all received Melbourne Water grants to do revegetation planting with their pupils and to learn more about the creek. Bay home for the Steve Irwin By Goya Dmytryshchak Standing on the helipad aboard Sea Shepherd’s decommissioned flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, the view of the bay and Melbourne’s skyline is phenomenal. Yarraville’s Kerrie Goodall, founder of the Ship for Good philanthropic organisation, said the vessel will be permanently moored at Williamstown’s Seaworks maritime precinct. Ms Goodall has spearheaded a campaign to “Save the Steve”, which had been destined to be scrapped in Hong Kong. Ideas for the ship include live music on deck, a vegan restaurant, bar, barber, tattoo studio and accommodation in the quaint cabins. The ship’s anti-whaling history and last two campaigns – to stop the Adani coal mine and drilling in the Great Australian Bight – are portrayed in Defend, Conserve Protect, a documentary produced by Melbourne’s Stephen Amis. Narrated by Dan Aykroyd, the film won best international feature documentary at last year’s American Documentary Film Festival and will premiere at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre this month. Ms Goodall said although the Steve had been retired from Neptune’s Navy – the name of Sea Shepherd’s fleet – it still had a lot to give to the cause through entertainment, education and inspiration. “There’s a lot of love for the Sea Shepherd and what they do, and fortunately a lot of that love comes from wealthy and famous people,” she said. “Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis donated that retractable helideck to protect the helicopter, which was sent out to search for illegal fishing vessels. “Often, if it came into contact with Japanese

whalers, they would throw things to foul up the helicopter and essentially damage their props, so the helicopter hangar was built to protect it. “But up on deck is an absolutely amazing, protected view … of Melbourne city and Hobsons Bay and the West Gate. “The aft, which is the deck under that, also is more protected and has beautiful views.” Speaking aboard the Steve Irwin last week, Amis said he went on a number of campaigns

with Sea Shepherd to shoot the film. “Sometimes the Japanese would put chains out – quite often they’d run chains to try and prop-foul boats,” he said. “On this particular [anti-whaling] campaign, a lot of the Japanese crew were indebted to the Yakuza so there was a lot of Yakuza members on the ships. “On this campaign and other campaigns since, quite often – even the Sun Laurel tanker that’s depicted in the film – there was a lot of

slave labour that was there, so there was a lot of bottles being thrown over the side at the Sea Shepherd crew … you’d open it up and there was like [a message], ‘We’re being held captive, can you please rescue us’. “It’s the wild west out in the Southern Ocean.” Defend, Conserve Protect will screen on Wednesday, June 12, from 6.30pm at the Sun Theatre in Yarraville. Cr Bob Turner With the Federal election over, we now turn our attention to the State Budget, which was brought down on 28 May. It features several announcements that will benefit our community, not least of which is the allocation of $2.4 million for a business case to develop a new hospital within our City.

Other positive Budget announcements include new primary schools in Eynesbury and Aintree, upgrades to Exford Primary School and a plan to upgrade Staughton College. These are pretty significant projects for our growing community, where 44 babies—that’s roughly two prep classes—are born each week.

Thousands of residents supported the Build Melton Hospital campaign last year, so it’s fantastic that the State Government has fulfilled their preelection promise to fund the business case for this much needed facility.

The Budget also included the delivery of 100 new or upgraded car parks at Melton Train Station; an announcement I’m confident local rail commuters will be extremely happy to hear.

It’s also exciting to see the allocation of $100 million for the development of a comprehensive rail plan for Melbourne’s west, which importantly includes mapping out a proposal to electrify the Melton rail line, something Council has been advocating for, for many years.

Council looks forward to working with the State Government to deliver these major health, education and transport infrastructure projects, which will vastly improve everyday life for thousands of residents. MY bRiMbAnK Peta Hayes has strong links to Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. She’s continued a proud family tradition, having worked at the school for the past 10 years. She spoke with Tate Papworth.

I’ve lived here for 20 years. I’ve always been involved around the place. My kids went to East Sunshine Kindergarten, Our Ladys Primary School and then to Caroline Chisholm. I’ve always been involved as a parent helper. I was treasurer at the kinder, treasurer at the primary school and different things like that. What do you like best about the area? The sense of community. It’s so welcoming. We have so many people from so many different cultures that make up this community and it’s really interesting. I also love all the different restaurants and how lots of different cultures are represented through food. How has the area changed during your time here? There are exciting times ahead with the Sunshine station coming up. Who would’ve thought that 20 years ago? Sunshine has changed so much over the years, you just have to look at all multi-storey buildings going up. Tell us about your connection to Caroline Chisholm. I’ve been at the school for 12 years, but my

connection goes back a lot longer than that. My brother-in-law was one of the first students in the first intake and my father-in-law was on the board of directors in 1966. My husband is one of 11 kids, there’s 50 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren and most of those have come through the school here and four have taught at the school. I feel a very strong connection to the school and also the local parish and the wider community. And what’s your role at the school? I started out as a learning support officer, helping students who needed additional help and I’ve been in administration for the past seven years. I’m also part of the wellbeing team where we help families who are in need. Have you noticed much change in the school since you started? A lot of building work is happening. There’s lots of improvements in the physical buildings. I also think there’s a real push by the school to work with families more closely to find the best results for families and students. And what do you like to do away from the school?

A research project on a Housing Commission estate in West Sunshine has revealed widespread structural faults in houses. Seventy per cent of respondents in a housing standards survey on the Glengala Estate cited one or more structural faults in their houses. These figures were revealed this week in a report released by the Western Region Housing Committee.

All’s fair in love, war, crimefighting and business, as James Bond and Besen demonstrated at the ceremonial opening of the Hoyts cinema complex at Highpoint City Shopping Centre last week. In the world premiere of “Licensed to Kill,” Bond wrestled aeroplanes and trucks and killed at least 85 people in a no-holds-barred mission of vengeance.

Almost 1000 residents from Brimbank and surrounding areas have moved to block any threat to the future of Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre. The 970 residents, predominantly from Brimbank, have signed a petition objecting to any plans council may have to close the centre. The proactive move follows the uncertainty sparked by the council’s decision to extend the centre’s contract for one year only, until June next year.

After 30 years as a firefighter, Sunshine station manager Geoff Audsley has seen many things he would rather forget – but he’s also helped save people he will remember forever. It is this great service, and a commitment to teaching others the message of fire safety, that has earned the MFB firefighter an Australian Fire Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday honours.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a Balkan beauty in Ardeer A Balkan restaurant, affiliated to a soccer club, in Ardeer – perfect for a CTS adventure. Balkan Grill is located in the clubrooms of Westgate Sindjelic FC and is just a few weeks old when we – myself, Bennie and Nat – pay a dinner visit. Balkan Grill is the brainchild of Danilo Majmunovic. He’s an experienced chef who’s cooked all over Australia. And now he’s set up shop in Ardeer – and we reckon that’s a smart move. It’s not like there’s a lot of competition in this rather lovely residential backwater. And the prices hit the CTS sweet spot – a few things over $20, but not many. Nat goes with the cevapi u slanini ($20) – Danilo’s cevapi wrapped in bacon and served with chopped onion on a “Sarajevo somun” roll. Nat likes his cevapi plenty, accompanying them with a side serve of good fries ($3.50). Bennie selects gurmanska pljeskavica – 285 grams of homemade minced pork and beef, seasoned with secret ingredients, filled with triple smoked ham and cheese ($20). Again, this is superb meat and Bennie loves it. The cheese and ham really is top-grade stuff. Bennie, too, gets a side of chips with his meat offering – and also a side of Balkan Grill’s cabbage salad ($2). He gives the Balkan Grill version a hefty two thumbs up. I order the mixed grill ($28) – and to be honest, I’m not quite sure what the hell I was thinking. This half-kilogram vegetarian’s

In fact, better to think of it as a share platter for two – and at $14 each, that’s a dead-set bargain. As well as slight variations of the meat deals ordered by Nat and Bennie, it also features BBQ sausages (rostiljska kobasica), pork neck medallion and dimljena vesalica (smoked pork tenderloin). The meat is served with kajmak (a sort of creamed feta), ajvar (red pepper relish) and cabbage salad. It’s all very good. There’s a final delicious surprise in store for us at Balkan Grill. Finding Balkan grilled fare at an Ardeer soccer club is thoroughly wonderful, of course. But finding all that AND that the chef also creates all his own desserts – including cakes and baklava – is superbly shocking. Bennie nods enthusiastically during his consumption of Danilo’s Ferrero Rocher cake. The price is $4.50. Gosh.

Create and learn with Waste Warriors This month, Brimbank Shopping Centre is helping children to create Waste Warriors, little creatures in puppet form, hatched from the wonderful power of their own imaginations. What is ‘Waste Warriors’? It’s a fun, sustainable education program for young kids, teaching them about the importance of looking after our environment in a hands-on way. They learn that their own Waste Warrior puppet is for helping them to protect the planet and get closer to their community’s efforts in this regard. Making the Waste Warriors Children are shown how to make their very own puppets using recycled materials and their imagination. Once completed, the puppets can either be taken home or displayed at the centre. Puppet show A completely original, 15-minute live performance featuring Waste Warrior puppets is on every day. SPORT Sunshine fades in a fatal second-half performance

Sunshine displayed a competitive spirit in the first half of its Western Region Football League division 1 match against Altona. But that simply made the 100-point defeat at the hands of the new ladder leader at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday even harder to swallow. The Kangaroos matched the Vikings’ hunger and tenacity to be in the hunt at half-time, but they fell away dramatically. A 22-point deficit at the mid-point blew out to ghastly triple figures for the Roos by full-time. Kangaroos coach Adam Contessa was disappointed with his team’s lack of fight in the second half. “At half-time, it was three-and-a-bit goals the difference,” Contessa said. “We took it to them for half a game. We were really competitive in contested ball and all the hard team things. “What we dished up in that second half wasn’t acceptable.” Sunshine was dismal in the second half. The Kangaroos deviated from their high-pressure football and Altona led them a merry dance. Had the Vikings kicked straight – the visitors finished with 20.24, including

13.16 in the second half – the outcome could have been a whole lot worse for the Kangaroos. “The work rate as a whole dropped off after half-time,” Contessa said. “With good sides, you can’t allow easy ball.” Sunshine has sorely missed the on-field leadership of captain Ben McInneny and the target of full forward Cam Holdsworth. The Kangaroos simply do not have the depth of the front-running sides to cover such significant outs. McInneny, who is recovering from a hip injury, and Holdsworth, who has been out with a hamstring, could be back in time for Sunshine’s next game – against Hoppers Crossing on June 15. “With the depth of our list at the moment, it hurts when we lose quality players,” Contessa said. “The week off will do them a world of good and we should get them back after the break.” Too much was left to too few for Sunshine on Saturday. Declan Moloney did a power of work in the ruck, Harvey Daniher tried his heart out at centre half-back and Shaun Kostizen fought

hard all the way to final siren in the back pocket. “It was a real hard one to pick our best players today,” Contessa said. Such is the closeness of the season, Sunshine is 2-5 after seven rounds – but only one game out of the top five. The month following the break will see the Kangaroos face top four sides Hoppers Crossing, Werribee Districts, Spotswood and Deer Park. That series could shape their destiny for the season. Meanwhile, Deer Park has tumbled from top spot after a 17-point loss to Spotswood. St Albans cruised to a 191-point win over cellar dweller Albion, while Caroline Springs went down by 50 points to Hoppers Crossing, but holds on to fifth spot. In division 3, Albanvale scored a percentage-boosting 168-point win over bottom side North Sunshine. Sunshine Heights made it four straight victories with an 88-point win over Wyndham Suns. Keilor steadies for welcome win By Lance Jenkinson Keilor had no right to win over Greenvale in the Essendon District Football League premier division on Saturday, but it refused to come off the ground a defeated side. There were two instances when the Blues were swimming against the tide in the second half of an enthralling encounter at Keilor Reserve, but on both occasions they fought their way back into the contest to finish with a memorable nine-point win. Blues coach Mick McGuane lauded his players for finding a way when it looked as though Greenvale was getting on top late in the game. “It was a great game of footy and it could’ve gone either way without question,” he said. “Halfway through the third quarter, it might’ve got to 22 points down or something of that nature, then halfway through the last quarter, we were 16 points down, but we found a way to win. “It was a pretty good effort.” Keilor could not afford to put a foot wrong in the last quarter if it was to keep its undefeated record intact. The composed Blues kept that in mind as they proceeded to kick five goals straight for the quarter to run out victors. “Those boys stood up when it counted,” McGuane said. “We kicked some really clutch goals late. “You have to kick those goals under pressure. “We found out about individuals in those situations and it was all positive.” The most pleasing aspect of the win for Keilor was its midfield to forward connection. The Blues have worked hard in recent weeks to find better spots in attack to score from and that was reflective in their goalkicking efficiency. “We’re always trying to tinker with our mids to forwards connection, where we win it and what we do with it when we win it,” McGuane said. “Today was a positive and the boys method after half-time was a lot better than it was in the first half.” Brett Stillman was Keilor’s standout in the midfield. Playing against his former club, not only did Stillman do a job defensively, but also set up a lot of the play with his work at the coal face. “It’s never easy playing against your old club and a lot of ex-teammates,” McGuane said. “As a young player, he would’ve felt an

enormous amount of pressure to perform, but we felt that he had a significant role to play against the stoppage. “Addam Maric is a very good player for them if allowed time and space and he got that early, but we gave Brett a job to nullify his influence and he did it pretty well after half-time.” Kane Barbuto, Dylan Joyce, David Gourdis and Jamie Papalia were influential in the midfield for Keilor. Young half-backs Mitchell Rogerson and Campbell Barton offered plenty of drive. Rookie Darren Walters had the unenviable task of staring down Greenvale star Fabian Deluca in the ruck and performed admirably. “He’s a kid who’s been given an opportunity because Brock McGregor did an ACL in round three,” McGuane said. “He’s playing against seasoned performers who have had AFL backgrounds, pre-seasons with weight programs, so we’ll continue to work with him throughout the week.” Dean Galea kicked three goals for Keilor, taking his tally to a league-best 35. Keilor heads into the Queen’s Birthday break with a game and percentage lead over second. The Blues will return to the field on June 15 with an away trip to Essendon Doutta Stars. In division 1, Hillside’s miraculous comeback attempt fell short by 12 points against Tullamarine. The Sharks were goalless and 51 points down at half-time, but kicked 11 goals to five in the second half to make it a close finish. In division 2, Keilor Park was battered by Coburg Districts, losing by 306 points. The Devils could only manage one goal off the boot of Domagoj Dajak in the last quarter. Calder’s pain turns to gain in a thumping victory Calder United is back to its brutal best in the NPL Victoria women’s soccer. The United machine was firing on all cylinders in a 5-0 thrashing of Heidelberg United at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday. That was a far cry from seven days earlier when Calder was forced to do some soul searching after a worrying loss to Box Hill United. Perhaps that was the wake-up call top-of-the-table Calder needed. United president Eric Psarianos said the players had “switched back on”. “They put in some hard work on the track during the week and I think our first 25 minutes today were exceptionally good,” he said. “They went back to the drawing board and came up with another plan to complement our game.” Calder United went in for a quick kill against Heidelberg. Three Calder goals were on the board in the first 16 minutes through Alycia Eicke, Holly

Boldiston and Catherine Zimmerman, with Aleks Sinclair and Angela Beard netting in the second half to complete the five-goal drubbing. Calder was wary of Heidelberg, which is fourth on the ladder and took the challenge right up to United earlier in the season. But it did not matter who was standing in front of Calder on this occasion – its players were going to find a way. “The girls were pretty focused today to make amends,” Psarianos said. “They took the loss as a learning curve and wanted to bounce back. “They came out and thumped Heidelberg, who are a having a pretty good season.” Adversity requires leadership – and Calder United seems to be in good hands in that regard. Outside the guidance of coaches Mark Torcaso and Ian Williamson, Calder’s on-field leaders stepped up and showed the way. “Emma Robers, Aleks Sinclair, Angie Beard and Golcan Koca – they really led from the front,” Psarianos said.

“They’ve been in the game for a while and are quite experienced. “They said to the younger ones, let’s bounce back and let’s respond.” Sinclair set the tone early with her high work rate on the front line. “She gave us a lot of drive and was getting in behind Heidelberg’s defence,” Psarianos said. Melissa Taranto and Raquel Deralas combined well in the midfield. Taranto was a main distributor, while Deralas made a number of advances on the Heidelberg defence. Defensively, Calder was resolute, with Gulcan Koca and Eicke standing their ground in the heart of the defence. Calder United is five points clear on top of the ladder ahead of a date with bottom-of-theladder Southern United at home on Saturday. Campaign plan falters By Lance Jenkinson Westgate is looking forward to a week’s break after encountering some turbulence in the past two Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west matches. Coach Nik Kovacevic said the football-free Queen’s Birthday weekend will come at the right time for the fourth-placed Westgate after enduring back-to-back losses for the first time this season. Westgate suffered its biggest defeat of the season on Saturday, going down 4-1 in a shock to Hoppers Crossing on the road at Grange Reserve. “It’s a good time to freshen up and reload,” Kovacevic said. “I’m confident we’ll bounce back after the break. “I’ve got good belief in us.” Despite the lopsided scoreline, Westgate walked away content it had played good enough football to win the game. The distinct difference between the sides was Hoppers Crossing’s ruthlessness in front of goal. After Steve Dimcevski put Westgate ahead early, Hoppers piled on four unanswered goals, including an equaliser in the first half and three more in the second half. But Westgate was not without its chances with its stats showing it doubled the home side’s shots on goal 12 to six. “We dominated for a lot of it, but they scored the goals,” Kovacevic lamented. “They scored four goals from those six shots and hit the crossbar twice. “They were very efficient, they were very clinical today and you’ve got to pay them respect for that. “We missed four from inside the six-yard box. “That’s football, if you don’t put a team away, there’s always that chance they will come back.” Westgate’s cause was not helped by the sending off of striker Vedran Stojanovic in the second half. Stojanovic was brandished two yellow cards in quick succession, which bemused Kovacevic. “We had a player sent off and we’re still wondering why,” he said. “We had a penalty turned down and we’re wondering why. “It was one of those days for us today.” Stojanovic will have an automatic one-match ban as a result. Westgate looked dangerous all game in an attacking sense, without having scoreboard impact. Stojanovic, Dimcevski and Ellis Davies had the Hoppers defence on the back foot for the most part. Melbourne Knights got the job done late in a 2-1 win over Altona Magic in the NPL VIctoria on the road at Paisley Park on Saturday night. The Knights’ winner came in the 93rd minute through striker Hamish Watson. It was his eighth and probably most important goal of the league season so far. With caretaker player-coach Marijan Cvitkovic at the helm, the Knights have moved back into the top four and advanced to the next round of the FFA Cup with a 2-1 win over Avondale in the space of a week. Green Gully had a 1-1 draw with Heidelberg United to remain in the top six. In NPL 2 west, St Albans Saints coughed up top spot after a 1-0 loss to Goulburn Valley Suns.

PEGS will be searching for answers when it heads into the Queen’s Birthday break with a dismal 1-7 record and a spot on the bottom of the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C ladder. Keilor Thunder has fumbled its chance to move into outright second on the Big V women’s state championship ladder.
