Get ready to hear the people sing. Catholic Regional College Sydenham is gearing up to perform its first musical production and they haven’t started small. The VCE theatre studies students are taking on the stage classic Les Miserables, which will be held at the college’s Caroline Springs campus over three showings from May 16-18. Master of the house/director Cassandra Hutchison said the excitement was palpable. “We wanted to do a musical for a while and we knew we had a talented year level singing-wise and decided this was the year,” she said. “It’s a huge challenge, but we’re super excited to put it on for everyone and why not start with the biggest show ever?” College captain Emmanuel Soriano said it was an honour to play lead character Jean Valjean. “Les Miserables is one of my favourite musicals. Centre budget blowout By Tate Papworth The cost of Brimbank council’s plans to upgrade and redevelop the St Albans Leisure Centre has ballooned to a staggering $60 million. The revelation follows last week’s election promise by Labor to fund $5 million towards the project, should it win this month’s federal election. Just six months ago, the council said the project would cost about $50 million and called on the state and federal governments to contribute $25 million each. The state government is yet to pledge any money toward the project and in November last

year knocked back the council’s application for a $3 million grant as part of the Better Pools program. Last month, the costs were estimated to have risen to about $58 million, but Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve told Star Weekly last week the costs were now estimated to be more than $60 million. “Last year, council set out with an ambitious plan to advocate for funding by the state and federal governments into this project, which is expected to cost more than $60 million in total,” she said. “We believe this project would benefit greatly from having all levels of government involved.”

Cr Congreve said the council will continue to work closely with the state government to secure its support and was committed to continuing its efforts at state and federal levels. “We’re very happy with the funding commitment made this week by the federal Labor opposition to contribute $5 million towards the replacement of the St Albans Leisure Centre with a health and wellbeing hub,” she said. However former mayor John Hedditch said on Star Weekly’s facebook page: “The ALP’s $5M commitment is a small first step but I wish it was a $15M commitment like the good citizens of Surf Coast Shire have been promised

by the ALP candidate for a new Torquay Pool with another $10M from Dan Andrews on top. “In needy Brimbank the $58M St Albans Leisure Centre Redevelopment now has a proposed $5M Federal ALP commitment and nothing from the Dan Andrews Government yet. "Don’t know about anyone else but I’m feeling like a less valued second class citizen compared to those in Torquay.” Brimbank council has previously said it would fund $25 million of the project. Last month The Age revealed that the council could seek gaming industry funding to help build the centre.

Labor pledges education funds By Tate Papworth Labor candidate for Fraser Daniel Mulino says Brimbank’s public schools will receive $28.61 million if the ALP wins the election. The money is part of the opposition’s $14 billion spending boost for public schools, which was announced late last year. Mr Mulino toured Brimbank schools last week to discuss how funding would be divided. He said no Brimbank public school will miss out. “I have been speaking with principals, teachers and parents … to ensure that we are providing support where it is needed most,” he said.

“We’ll be supporting our teachers and principals to deliver outstanding educational experiences for our kids and giving schools the resources they need to help students thrive.” He said the funds will transform public schools across Brimbank and give all children the opportunity to reach their full potential. “This is a real win for the Fraser communities and schools in areas like Sunshine, Braybrook, St Albans, Sydenham and Keilor,” he said. Motorcyclists cop the heat of police work

Striking success for a tenpin talent Alethea Mata is knocking down pins with skill beyond her years. The 12-year-old St Albans student recently represented Victoria in the under-18 division of the President’s Shield tenpin bowling competition in Chirnside and helped take home gold medals for her state. It’s the second time Alethea has taken part in the tournament and she said she was better for the experience the second time around. “I felt like I did a lot better this year than last year,” she said.

“Last year I was only 11 – I didn’t really know what was happening and I wasn’t as aware of what to do. But now I understand it all a bit better, which helped me improve. I also had more coaching and better equipment this time around.” Alethea’s success is no accident – she’s naturally gifted at the sport, but puts in countless hours of practice. “I started bowling when I was seven,”she said. “Mum and dad brought me to a bowling alley and I loved it. I got my first bowling ball when

I was eight. I train out in Point Cook five times a week. I still love it. Sometimes you have bad days, but it’s mostly fun.” Alethea hopes to one day soon represent the country. “There’s this thing after President’s Shield called the Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championship,” she said. “I’d really like to be picked to go to Malaysia to represent Australia during that.” Tate Papworth

Brimbank Highway Patrol’s Operation Endo is being lauded as a success. Police launched the operation late last year, teaming up with the air wing in a bid to crack down on motorcycle offending. Police ran another installment of the operation in the final weekend of April, during which nine cars and four motorcycles were impounded for various offences, including unlicensed driving and driving while suspended. Two motorcyclists attempted to evade police, but were apprehended with the help of a helicopter. The male rider of a stolen motorcycle was charged with numerous offences including evade police, theft and speeding. Both riders were charged and remanded in custody. Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Bill Joannidis said the police message was starting to get through. “We are seeing less motorcycle riders trying to evade police in the Brimbank area than there were a few months ago when this operation commenced,” he said. “This is due to the large number of arrests made and number of bikes impounded. “We feel that the message is getting out to all riders – that riding a motorbike doesn’t mean they can’t be caught. “They will be caught and will be charged.” Tate Papworth

A soulful strut for St Albans A hit show will be rocking St Albans this Friday. Writer and performer Candy Bowers is bringing Australian Booty to the Bowery Theatre in what she described as a magical opportunity. “St Albans is a special spot,” she said. “It’s the place my parents first came to after being granted political asylum from apartheid South Africa in 1973. “You have to believe in your back story in order to make your dreams come true. The site of the former Calder Rise Primary School will go under the hammer tomorrow, bringing an end to a lengthy battle to keep the land in public hands. The Brimbank council and state government have been at loggerheads as to who should pay for the land. In March, the council knocked back the opportunity to buy the site after a due diligence report determined it should not make an offer. At the time, now mayor Cr Lucinda Congreve said the financial burden of purchasing the land could not be justified. “The majority of Keilor residents want this to happen, but the majority of ratepayers in Brimbank, seeing us spend $10 million on an oval that’s not even AFL size, will probably wonder what we’re doing,” she said. A motion put forward by Cr Virginia Tachos for the council to buy the property was supported by fellow councillors John Hedditch, Daniel Allan, Duyen Anh Pham and Kim Thien Truong but was defeated. Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll has repeatedly called on the council to buy the land. Last week he said the private sale was a disappointing outcome. “I tried very hard to make this a reality and offered it to the council on four different occasions,” Mr Carroll said. “We’d done a lot of work with the Keilor Football Club around the possibility of making it a hub for female football.” The auction will be held tomorrow, Wednesday May 8, at 32a Green Gully Road, Keilor from noon. While no official price has been put on the two-hectare property, industry speculation says it could fetch as much as $8 million.

Independent For Fraser I grew up in the western suburbs of Sunshine and St Albans where I completed my public primary and secondary education. I am a Pharmacist by profession and have worked in both Braybrook and Sunshine supporting the health and well-being of members in our local community. I grew up in Australia in a time where everyone knew each other in the local community. After school and on weekends, we rolled out our bins on the street and the local children would join us for some friendly and competitive cricket. I enjoy history, with a view to learn from those who came before us, who had worked hard through their blood, sweat and tears to build the foundation of Australia as we know it today. The Australian political landscape has changed. Regardless of which side of politics you support, it used to be that each represented values and ideas and advocate for them. It saddens me that more often than not, the Politicians are reactive rather than proactive and often it’s more about the politician themselves. Furthermore, you have candidates standing to give preference to other interested party and/or to influence votes in the Senate. I believe a candidate should run because they have the best interest of their constituents at heart, to foster change and better the lives in our community. I believe policies (5) and (6) is a start and I will work hard to advocate for these changes. Fraser is a new Federal electorate in Melbourne’s West and is considered a very safe Labor seat. However, does the major Party really care for Melbourne’s West?  Two prisons were scheduled to be built in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs by the State Labor government; Ravenhall prison began construction in Feb 2015 and opened in Oct 2017. A new high-security Youth prison was scheduled to be built in Werribee South by 2020 without local community consultation, the location was dumped due to fierce Local protests.  The current Labor candidate for Fraser has mainly worked in the South-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Does he truly understand the local issues and challenges in Melbourne’s West? MAKE FRASER MARGINAL! The West is my home and our community. I believed it has been and will continue to be taken for granted unless we act now. Together we will make our community a better and prosperous place for this and the next generation.

Small to Medium Size Businesses Make loans available to all existing small to medium businesses in Fraser at 3 year term, with 1st year interest free and last 2 years at current bank interest rate. Once the loan has been fully paid, the loan can be made available again. a. Loan up to $10,000 for businesses with annual turnover ≤$1 million b. Loan up to $25,000 for businesses with annual turnover >$1 million 2. Childcare Policy Families with two working parents with combined annual income of ≤$150,000 should have access to fully subsidised childcare fee for the first child. Any children thereafter will be at the current subsidised rate. 3. Affordable Healthcare for Seniors Seniors ≥65 years with concession/pension card should receive PBS medications at half the current concession price. Instead of paying $6.50 per prescription, they will pay $3.25 per prescription. 4. Surplus Budget of $7.1 Billion The Government projected a budget surplus of $7.1 billion for year 2019-20. I will advocate for equal share for Fraser ($7.1 billion divided among 151 electorates in Australia will give about $47 million per electorate). From this budget I proposed; a. One off payment of $1000 to families on Centrelink with one or more children to help with the cost of living. b. Establish a Fraser Future Fund for the remaining money, which can be used to stimulate the local economy and/or assist with welfare in Fraser as required. I will ensure the Fraser Future Fund remains strong, well-funded and permanent. 5. Establish a government-funded short training course for prospective candidates at federal and state elections. To be eligible for candidacy registration one must have completed this course. 6. Introduce new legislation whereby candidates elected under a political party must represent his/her constituents under the same party or have a By-Election if they wish to change party.

Cairnlea outlet lucky for some By Tate Papworth Brimbank’s luckiest lotto outlets have been revealed. There have been 14 major prize wins across Brimbank since January 1 last year with Cairnlea News and Lotto topping the list with four major prize wins. The outlet sold two tickets with wins of more than a million dollars – the highest being $1,977,896.39 which was sold in March this year.

However it wasn’t the largest prize-winning ticket sold, that title belongs to St Albans. Winning Lotteries St Albans has sold two winning tickets this year, the highest being a $23,333,333.34 OzLotto prize which made national headlines in March.

Winning Lotteries St Albans manager Cindy said selling such a major prize was a thrill. “We all arrived for work in the morning after that $23 million ticket was sold and there were news crews outside the shop,” she said. “We all felt like celebrities for a day.” The store sold another million-dollar ticket in January this year, making it the luckiest in Brimbank for the year so far. Cindy said there’s no secret to the success. “It’s probably all luck,” she said. “But we do have a little thing we do where we have a

space for customers to donate loose change. At the end of the year we take it and donate it to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Maybe that’s bringing us and the customers a little bit of good luck.” Other suburbs with major wins include Sunshine (two), Keilor Downs (one) and Braybrook (one). In all, the west has claimed the second highest winnings since January last year with 21 major wins totalling $64,590,979.48. Melbourne’s northern suburbs took the title of highest winnings with 27 major prize wins.

Halloumi brew crew The crew at Fury & Son Brewing is hopping into a celebration of Cypriot heritage and a deep love of halloumi cheese. The Keilor Park brewery will host All Praise the Halloumi as part of Good Beer Week in which the team will brew up three different beers to match three different halloumi dressings. Fury & Son managing director Andrew Georgiou said there was much excitement about the event. “This will be one of the first times we’ve really been able to showcase our heritage,” he said. “It’s incredibly exciting and we’ve got some great flavours in store.” Mr Georgiou said lots of planning had gone into the creations. “We went through a pretty solid ideas process, which really focused on the dressings,” he said. “We really want to take people on a journey which starts savory and ends with something

sweet – but I’m going to keep the flavours close to my chest for now. “We’re expecting a crowd of around 60 people which would be a pretty solid turnout.” In addition to the halloumi, live music and an array of Cypriot food will be on offer. Property raids

Detectives executed a number of warrants in Deer Park last week as part of an investigation into the theft and rebirthing of vehicles. Warrants were executed at three private properties on Robinsons Road. Police seized two stolen motorbikes and a vehicle. A 37-year-old man from Point Cook is assisting police with their inquiries.

Students from six school choirs will join voices for a spectacular event this Thursday. The Sacred Music Choral Festival will be held at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Braybrook and will feature neighbouring schools Thomas Carr, Catholic Regional College Caroline Springs, Marian College Sunshine and Mount Saint Joseph Girls College. A man has died following a single-vehicle crash at Calder Park last week. Police believe the car was travelling inbound along the Calder Freeway when it veered off the road and rolled about 1.20am last Wednesday. The driver died at the scene.

Mr Mulino said the money would make a big difference to safety in the area. He said the ALP had spoken to safety leaders in Brimbank who were working to address the challenges of family violence, alcohol abuse, incarceration and anti-social behaviour. “I’m looking forward to working with council, local residents and businesses to get the most out of this very welcome investment,” he said. The community will get to decide how the money is spent. Brimbank council will be able to nominate community initiatives under the pledge of up to $1.5 million. The money could be used for community safety infrastructure (such as lighting, CCTV or bollards) or projects run by local community organisations.

Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve welcomed the funding promise and said the council would listen to residents from across Brimbank on what their priorities were for improving safety in their neighbourhoods. “We want to ensure projects around community safety reflect the views and expectations of our community,” she said. “Safety is fundamental to creating the kind of community that we all want, and deserve, to belong to – we all have a part to play in building a safer community. “This money will complement the work we are already doing under our Community Safety Strategy to improve safety and reduce crime – including lighting improvements, programs to prevent violence against women and to reach out to vulnerable groups in our community. The council last year installed CCTV cameras in St Albans town centre. It has been credited with helping to significantly improve safety levels in the area. Figures released by the Crime Statistics Agency in March revealed crime rates rose by 11 per cent across Brimbank in the year to December, 2018. When the figures were released, Acting Inspector Terry West said family violence was a major reason for the spike. “Stalking and harassment numbers jumped from 353 to 511, which is consistent with what we’ve seen since the introduction of our dedicated family violence investigative team,” he said. “We’re seeing more people reporting these cases, which obviously raises the numbers.”

The manager of a company selling nuts, dried fruits and sweets in shopping centres has been convicted and fined $7500 for bullying a storeman. Matthew John Sallama was the manager of John’s Nuts Operations Pty Ltd when the offences occurred. In the Sunshine Magistrates Court on April 17, he pleaded guilty to breaching the Occupational Health and Safety Act. He was also ordered to pay costs of $2000. The court heard that for a period of almost six months in 2016 Sallama tormented the storeman – who had been working with the company since 2013 – with “profane, belittling, degrading, or offensive language” and spoke in an “aggressive, intimidating or abusive manner”. He also threatened to “burn” his wages, to dismiss him, deduct e-tag expenses from the storeman’s pay, and not to pay for his immigration visa. The court heard the treatment affected the storeman’s health, causing him distress, depression, fearfulness and tearfulness. WorkSafe last month said the court action was the second time in six months the company had been fined over the incident. In December last year the Sunshine court found the company, which is now in external administration, guilty of failing to provide a safe work environment. The company was fined $80,000. Upgrade Western Highway

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner Residents will be aware that Council has embarked on an advocacy campaign to Upgrade Western Highway, in the lead up to the Federal election. While the campaign has garnered considerable community support, having already collected almost 4000 petition signatures, it would appear Melton is not on the radar of any major party, who have yet to commit to upgrading this critical piece of transport infrastructure. The Western Highway functions as an important economic driver at the national, state and metropolitan level, and is part of a national freight route, yet it is barely up to rural freeway standard in sections, let alone urban freeway standard. With our population set to grow to more than 400,000 over the next 20 years, traffic modelling indicates the

Around 60,000 vehicles use the highway every day, with this figure set to increase to 113,000 by 2031. In its current condition, the highway won’t cope with this increase, and needs urgent upgrades to meet the demands of this projected growth. Upgrades would include interchanges at Bulmans and Mount Cottrell Roads, and a pedestrian overpass at Arnolds Creek, along with road improvement works and the removal of at-grade infrastructure - like bus stops and driveways - between Deer Park and Melton West. Future planning will include additional lanes, an interchange at Harkness Road and an overpass at Paynes Road. These works will improve safety, reduce congestion, and prevent the highway becoming gridlocked; as well as positively impacting the lives of tens of thousands of residents who will spend less time stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and more quality time with their families and friends. Western Highway will be gridlocked as early as 2021. While we appreciate commitments made to local sporting organisations in Rockbank and Caroline Springs, we also need major commitments for critically-needed projects like upgrades to Western Highway, Calder Freeway and support for a new Melton Hospital. The major parties need to look beyond just winning the upcoming election and make commitments where the funding is desperately needed. Our City shouldn’t need to be a marginal seat to get the government to notice us. Help us tell the candidates this is important to you. Cr Lara Carli It’s an exciting time for Watts ward residents, with a number of key infrastructure projects being delivered in the coming months. Works on the Hillside Pavilion extension in Royal Crescent, are just about finished, with improvements guaranteed to impress both residents and visitors alike. The new pavilion looks fantastic, and features unisex change rooms and bathrooms for both home and away teams. The $400,000 extension was funded entirely by Council, and will be completed by mid-June. I, for one, am very excited about this project and encourage Hillside residents to come along and check-out the new facility for themselves. Design work for the new Morton Playspace is well underway, with construction works scheduled to commence in September. This exciting project will see playground equipment,

outdoor exercise equipment, shelter and picnic seating, nature play areas, footpath connections and landscaping and tree planting installed on the reserve adjacent to Morton Homestead and the Taylors Hill Men’s Shed. This $530,000 project was made possible as the result of a partnership between Melton City Council and the State Government, who provided funding of $265,000 under their Growing Suburbs Fund program. Jamieson jumps for joy By Tate Papworth Brimbank heptathlete Jamieson Battistella will soon don the green and gold once again. The 18-year-old is on her way to the Oceania Athletics Association Championships in June, following a strong showing at the recently held Australian Athletics Championships. Battistella claimed a raft of personal best times to take out gold in the heptathlon and high jump. While she wasn’t expecting big results in the high jump, Battistella said things just fell into place on the day.

“Nationals was really good this year. I did the individual high jump and javelin and then the heptathlon, all in the 20 women’s age group. “The javelin went OK. It was a solid start for a warm-up while I was up there. But then I went into the high jump not expecting too much because I’m not an individual or specialist high jumper – I’m a heptathlete – but I was lucky enough to be at my peak on the day. “I managed to jump a two-centimetre personal best, which takes me up to one metre 78 – that got me the gold medal and an Oceania qualifier.” Battistella carried her form over into her preferred discipline, the heptathlon. “For the heptathlon, I went in knowing from qualifying that I was ranked about second, I thought I’d be a medal chance if I performed on the day. “I was lucky enough to get four personal

bests out of the seven events on the day and an overall personal best points score, which got me the gold.” While she’s qualified for two events, Battistella said she’ll continue to train as she normally would. “I’ll still train solely for the heptathlon

because that’s my main event – it’s the one that I really work hard for, but obviously that includes high jump in the seven events so I’ll still be training for that. “I might chuck in a couple of extra sessions than I’d normally do, we’ll see how the programming goes.”

Brimbank guys on health kick It’s a case of game-on for the Western Bulldogs’ Sons of the West program in Brimbank. Now in its sixth year, the men’s health program is being held in eight local government areas, including Brimbank, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Ballarat and Melton. The program promotes healthy living in men who live, work or recreate in Victoria’s western region. Western Bulldogs community foundation general manager Kashif Bouns said the sessions, over 10 weeks, could be highly beneficial. “Sons of the West has encouraged some outstanding health outcomes for its participants over the past six years,” he said. “The foundation highly encourages men in the west to come along to a session – you never know what you might achieve.” The sessions cover topics relevant to men in the west, such as nutrition, exercise, prostate cancer, diversity and gender equity. The program will run in Brimbank until Friday, July 5, and is being held on Wednesdays from 6.30pm at St Albans Community Centre. A growing concern A Brooklyn community garden is about to sprout and people are being invited to share their ideas for its growth. Project manager Verana Hunter-Raye said the idea started from a group of women who came up with the ‘3012 Community Interactive Green Space’ initiative. “That was because the Altona North and Brooklyn areas are one of the highest low-socioeconomic and disadvantaged areas in the west,” she said. “And also for food security and sustainability – just making sure that people have a place where they can grow some healthy food. “Also, it’s a place for socialising and for increased community wellbeing.” A gathering earlier this month was aimed at getting some of the plants planted and getting

some feedback from the community about how they’d like to see the area developed. The project is supported by Hobsons Bay council and Walker Close Community Centre in Altona North, and has received a donation from Bunnings. CAN’T MAKE IT ON ELECTION DAY?

Poll time in Brimbank Early voting for the federal election has begun, with thousands of Brimbank residents voting in a different electorate. The seat of Fraser was created following a shuffling of boundaries and names of federal divisions after the 2016 election. The new seat of Fraser encompasses most of Brimbank with Sunshine, St Albans, Albion, Ardeer, Keilor and Sydenham all falling within its boundaries. Six people have nominated in Fraser for the House of Representative – Daniel Mulino (ALP), Peter Bain (Liberal), Rebecca Scorgie (The Greens), Vinh Chau (United Australia Party), Tony Dobran (The Great Australian Party) and Van Tran (Independent). The Australian Electoral Officer for Victoria, Steve Kennedy, said that despite the changes, many polling stations remained the same. “These adjustments mean that roughly 800,000 voters in Victoria will be voting in a different electorate or in one that is the same but has had a change of name,” he said. “The AEC has transferred people across to their new or renamed divisions and recently wrote to relevant households to advise them of the change. “Even in the event of a change in division, the vast majority of affected voters will be able to cast their ballots at the same local polling booth they attended in 2016.” The election will be held on Saturday, May 18. Brimbank council has revised its methods for supporting migrants and new arrivals to successfully settle in the community, with a new action plan. The plan outlines strategies to respond to the needs of new and emerging communities settling in Brimbank. It also aims to support Brimbank’s settlement agencies. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the strategy will support new arrivals and the wider community. “As one of the most multicultural communities in Victoria, diversity is one of Brimbank’s key strengths. “Refugees, humanitarian entrants, asylum seekers, migrants and skilled migrants, make up a significant portion of our new and emerging communities – bringing opportunities, cultural richness and diverse ideas. “But migrants and refugees also face unique challenges – and receiving high quality support is key to successfully settling into their new lives in Australia,” Cr Congreve said. dispose of e-waste items at a number of drop-off points across Brimbank – at no charge. “Council will introduce the e-waste drop-off points to collect, dismantle and recycle any discarded products. We will keep the community well informed of location details as we approach the mid-2019 ban.” Cr Congreve said there were also other ways to dispose of unwanted items. “There’s a better place for e-waste than your rubbish bin. Residents may consider donating their unwanted items to a charity or offering them to friends or family,” she said.

Day of understanding Aboriginal queer performer Jessie Lloyd will be among the guests at Hobsons Bay council’s annual ceremony for IDAHOBIT – International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. Lloyd, from St Albans, said the day held special meaning for her. “I have a personal interest in this event,” she said. “I will be inviting some of my family to come along because we’ve recently had a new member of our family who’s intersex, this is quite a new thing for my family, especially the older generation. “So, I’m going to take the opportunity to invite them along to this event to raise awareness and learn more information about, not only the intersex, but the LGBTIQA community. “My family’s quite conservative and they’re Christian people so we’re really taking the

MY bRiMbAnK Xavier McGettigan and Jayson Fry are making waves on the dance scene. The Caroline Springs duo have choreographed, directed and managed a stage production which is set to tour three cities across Victoria. They spoke with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank? Xavier: I’m the director of the Geelong-based, independent dance theatre company Attitude Dance Company, but we’re both residents of Caroline Springs – we’ve lived here a while now. What do you make of the performing arts scene in Brimbank? Xavier: It’s certainly developing out here. I’m hoping to get my finger on the pulse a little more than I currently do, but there are lots of fantastic dance schools with wonderful teachers here. I really hope to work with them in the future. Tell us about your latest production. Jayson: The production is called Ours. It’s our second major work by our newly created Impact Ensemble. We really wanted to explore a new and more intimate way of presenting. Ours explores themes of ownership, belonging and community through eight original dance works. So each artist has had full ownership of their piece? Jayson: They have. This is an opportunity for them to tell their stories through dance. They own their stories and you really see it come through on the floor.

Two of the most interesting contests in Saturday’s State elections are in this area. They are in the Werribee seat in the Lower House and the Melbourne West Province in the Upper House. The two seats are being fought against the background of a reported swing against the Government.

Braybrook Football Club, which produced Ted Whitten, Doug Hawkins, George Bissitt, Ray Walker and Gary Merrington, has folded. The present players of what was once the most successful club in the Footscray District League, voted to close at a special meeting last Thursday. The club is about $5000 in debt. It receives no sponsorship from local industry.

A local progress association has lashed out at the Brimbank council’s decision to charge almost double the waste collection rate for residents who do not want to swap their 240-litre bins. The president of the Overnewton Ward Residents Association, Mr Zlate Petrevski, said the group … was “disappointed” with the council’s announcement to charge residents who wanted to keep their big bins, $158 a year.

Brimbank Council may have its sights set on St Albans’ Errington Reserve for its $30 million new civic centre, but it will have to fight the locals to get it. Council CEO Nick Foa announced the council’s intention to build its new home base at Errington Reserve, saying it topped an assessment of four sites.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir reconsiders a local favourite A regular sight that bemuses us when we’re seeking a feed in Flemington is people queuing up for a table at Laksa King. Good luck to them, but the CTS ethos usually leads us to going where the crowds aren’t. In Flemington and for Malaysian, that invariably means M Yong Tufu, but we are happy and keen to check out the new Laksa King family establishment – Laksa King Kitchen on Racecourse Road. The new Laksa King Kitchen boasts a chic-but-small dining area, though there is more seating upstairs. The staff are keen, happy and all a-bustle. The menu is a solid gathering of Malaysian staples divided into small/big bites, noodles, rice dishes, laksas and vegetarian. There is a nifty twist – laksas are offered in two sizes. This makes good sense, as regular laksas are always a big meal. Not that we can envisage a day when we would order the smaller size! Selections can be ascertained using the printed menu or on the laptop at each table, but the actual ordering is done via the latter. Bennie and I share a starter and have a bigger dish each. Lobak ($8.60) is less on flavour and crinkly beancurd than we would like, but it’s a fine beginning that delivers us three porky chunks. In a fine break with boring CTS practice, it is Bennie who orders a laksa – in this case, the bigger version of the angus beef outing ($13.50). It’s a big and handsome bowl-full but he is

He does give, however, an enthusiastic 10/10 for the many tender beef chunks. And I get to try one of the eggplant pieces – it is wonderfully luscious and memorable. But still … That leaves me ordering the Hainan chicken rice ($13.50). The photos of the dish didn’t really inspire and that unease increases when I realise my rice meal will be eaten without the usual bowl of chicken soup on the side. But all is forgiven from the first mouthful of perfectly ginger-perfumed rice and onwards. This is a triumph and one of the best of this personal favourite I’ve had for a long time. There’s a lot of chook and it’s tender and expertly boned. The ginger mash, chilli sauce and soy accompaniments are excellent and in generous quantities and the wilted bean sprout/veg offering is likewise top notch. Ben says the team at Watergardens usually donate items to raffles and other fundraising events, but recently a different approach was taken.

“This time we’ve donated some money, which may be used to help fund the club and make it bigger and more successful,” he says. “This money could go towards a new hockey pitch or simple items like new hockey balls and new cones or goals. SPORT PEGS prepares to fire after horror start to the season No matter where PEGS is positioned on the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C ladder, it will find a way to get up for its clash with rivals Marcellin Old Collegians. PEGS coach Dane Pound is banking on his players to dig that little bit deeper to not only secure a first win of the campaign this Saturday, but also get some bragging rights over one of his team’s long-time foes. “If we’re going to get up for any game, it’s going to be against Marcellin, the old school rival,” Pound said. “We’ll be up and about.” PEGS has endured a torrid start to the season. The Bombers are 0-4 and on the bottom of the ladder with a percentage of 44.73. The rough start is a by-product of a summer in which it lost 14 walk-up starters, the subsequent blooding of some young players to replace those who have either retired, focused on work commitments or transferred to another club, and a rough fixture that pitted

them against every top four team so far, with fifth-placed Marcellin to follow. “It has been a tough start,” Pound said. “You don’t want to search for any excuses, but having a young group and having that fixture [made it tough].” While a gulf in class has been exposed, PEGS remains upbeat it can make something of this season. Pound is confident his side will turn the corner soon and senses his group can see the light at the end of what looks to be a dark tunnel. There have been some promising signs for PEGS. Adrian Romanyk continues to be a menace in attack and could be on the verge of ripping a game apart soon. Romanyk has kicked 12 goals in four games to sit third on the competition’s goalkicker’s list, despite his side’s struggles. “He’s an extremely talented player coming towards the end of his career and he’s working

and trying very hard, but he’s probably not getting the service that he’s used to, but he’s still contributing,” Pound said. Youngster Liam Mercieca is looking to be an exciting prospect. Max Philpot, on the ball, and Brett Hannah, rebounding off half-back, have been impressive. Philpot is on Williamstown’s VFL list and could soon receive a call up if he continues his current form. “If I get the call that he’s playing for Williamstown, I’ll be so happy for him, while at the same time I’ll be thinking ‘geez, what are we going to do now?’,” Pound said. Aiming to KO the hype By Lance Jenkinson Keilor Downs boxing champion Joel Camilleri is just the “other guy” in the eyes of Foxtel promoters and the daily press. Camilleri, 28, will get his first shot at the main card of a Main Event channel night of fights when he takes on son-of-a-gun Tim Tszyu for the Australian Super Welterweight Title at The Star in Sydney on May 15. Instead of talking up Camilleri’s chances of retaining his Australian title belt, all the coverage has been focused on Tszyu, son of legendary Australian boxer Kostya Tszyu. Tszyu is the inexperienced fighter in the bout, but the fascination with his name is what is drawing all the attention. Camilleri understands the Tszyu name is the one that will sell Main Event passes for Foxtel, but he will use the bout to show the nation he is ready to steal the headlines and bring to an end the hype surrounding Tszyu. “They’re promoting his name so much, making out he’s something that I believe he’s

not, so when I beat this so-called next best thing in the world, they’re going to have to put all the attention on me,” Camilleri told Star Weekly. “Tune in May 15 because I’m coming out to create my own story and end the hype train.” Camilleri has fought in prime time to a nationwide audience before – on an undercard for an Anthony Mundine bout with Siarhei Rabchanka in 2014. That night ended in a loss for Camilleri to Anthony Buttigieg, but it provided him with much-needed experience on a big stage at the Melbourne Arena. Camilleri, who has a 17-5 record, believes his experience in the ring will be too much for Tszyu, who is 12-0. “I’ve got five losses on my record, a couple of very debatable ones, but I’m still rated 73 in the world and he’s rated 138, which shows that I’ve beaten much better guys than he has,” he said. Camilleri will travel to Sydney to defend his title belt – and that will make it all the more sweeter if he can bring down Tszyu in front of his home fans.

Camilleri has vowed to put on a memorable show for the Victorians that purchase a Main Event ticket on Foxtel or attend their local sports bar to watch the fight. “I’m going to give them something to talk about for a long time,” he said. “I’m looking to finish Tim Tsyzu and end the hype.” Camilleri is wary that he could be treated akin to a challenger in the fight and not the title holder. He believes he will need a comprehensive victory – by way of knock-out or by a large margin on the scorecards – to retain his belt. “I’ll have to win an extra round on the scorecard because they’ve already booked him in for three or four more pay per view fights and they’re planning his fights already,” Camilleri said. “They cannot let me win, so I’ve got to go in there and take it out of the judges’ hands.” Camilleri described Tszyu as a “gentleman” and his dad, Kostya, as a “legend” of the sport, but maintains this is his time to put his name up in lights in Australian boxing circles.

An inexperienced Keilor came away with the points against Avondale Heights in the Essendon District Football League premier division on Saturday. With nine players having played less than six senior games for the club, it was a new-look Blues’ side. The Blues were down early on the scoreboard, but kicked 10 goals in a row in the second quarter to take control of the game. It was more of the same in the second half, with the Blues winning 21.13 (139)-9.10 (64). Despite being five goals down early in the match, Blues coach Mick McGuane said he wasn’t too unhappy with how they were going. “It was just about tidying a few things,” he said. “Our conversion at goal wasn’t great. McGuane said Dean Galea played an unselfish game up forward, while Matthew Clark also proved a target, as the Blues had 11 goalkickers. McGuane said he was happy with how the players who had come into the side had stepped up. The Blues had several injuries the week before, including knee injuries to Brock McGregor and Nick O’Kearney. It’s still unclear how serious McGregor’s injury is, while O’Kearney has already had surgery on his knee cap. The Blues are one of two teams that sit 4-0 after four rounds. McGuane said it was pleasing how the playing group had overcome adversity. “We’re started the season reasonably well, considering who we have had available,” he said. “You need to lean on players who you think will be senior footballers.” The Blues this week face Airport West, before having a bye the following week. Falcons switch it up to command a winning position

City West Falcons are proving there is more than one way to skin a cat in the Victorian Netball League championship division. Despite the disruption to the starting line-up caused by the beginning of the Australian Netball League competition, which sees a number of their stars step up to the next level, the Falcons just keep on winning. The Falcons remain the hottest team in the competition, improving to 6-0 and a game clear on top with a comfortable 65-49 win over the Southern Saints at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. Falcons coach Marg Lind has thrown her line-ups around with good effect. “Sometimes right up to the death knock, we don’t know who we’ve got playing,” she said. “They [ANL teams] dictate to you how much load the players can take.” Star goal shooter Jane Cook is unavailable for

City West indefinitely as she continues her stint with Tasmania in the ANL. It has opened up a spot for Tharjini Sivalingam, who impressed with 62-from-65 attempts for a return of 96 per cent. Centre Molly Jovic’s connection to the Collingwood Magpies put her on a minute’s restriction against the Saints, so she was taken out of the game in the second half. Soli Ropati switched from wing defence to centre to cover Jovic and not only filled her shoes admirably, but had a huge influence in City West turning a one-goal half-time lead into a 16-goal battering. “Soli just played at a different pace, which is what they weren’t prepared for,” Lind said. “She probably used a little bit more of stop and change up than Molly did, while Molly was more belting hard to the corners and they probably did their homework on that.

“Soli hung back a bit, let Maggie hit top, cut back towards the ball and put an extra pass in and seemed to just settle. “Molly is great, but the opposition didn’t do their homework on Soli. “It’s refreshing to know we’ve got a couple of good change-ups there.” Anger Akec performed strongly at wing defence when Ropati moved to centre, while Imogen Sexton relished her time in defence. It has been a long road to the VNL’s top flight for Sexton, who endured two ACL injuries in back-to-back seasons. “We’ve been nursing her for 12 months, just trying to get her back into sport,” Lind said. Albion fights with pride By Lance Jenkinson Albion captain Josh Bench is not one to accept honourable losses. The Cats struggled mightily in the first three games of the Western Region Football League division 1 season, losing all three outings by an eye-watering average margin of 194. While the rest of the league is consigning the Cats to relegation barely a month into the season, Bench saw his side’s clash with newly-promoted Point Cook on Saturday as a real opportunity to enter the winners’ circle for the first time under new coach Lloyd Balshaw. Albion failed in its quest for victory, going down to Point Cook by 37 points at JR Parsons Reserve, but regained some respect. But Bench demands more of his team and was disappointed Albion could not reach its full potential, which he believes would have been enough to register a win. “We thought we would’ve played better footy against someone like Point Cook, but we just couldn’t play the brand of footy that we wanted to play and that’s why we struggled in the end.” It has been a tumultuous start to the season for Albion. 52 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 7, 2019

The Cats endured a player exodus over the summer and then lost coach Steve Lowerson on the eve of the season. Injuries continue to mount and with player stocks hit hard, numbers in the reserves side have dwindled. The saviour for Albion could be Balshaw, who is slowly guiding the Cats’ ship back to safety. Balshaw has been able to get a high percentage of players to fully commit to training and match days and keep spirits high. “He’s done a wonderful job so far,” Bench said. “He’s done a great job considering the position he was chucked into at the last minute.” Bench is urging senior footballers who are keen to pull on the boots again to get to training at JR Parsons Reserve on Tuesdays and Thursdays and put their hand up for selection. “We’ve had people coming from here, there and everywhere,” Bench said. “The numbers have started to pick up over the past couple of weeks.” While the Point Cook loss was disappointing, there were positives for Albion. The performances of brothers Aaron and Connor McPherson stood out. Aaron had plenty of touches in his new role on the ball, while Connor was superb in his rebounding

role off half-back. Ladd John kicked two goals in an impressive display, while Bench and vice-captain Patrick Savage provided strong leadership. Morale remains high at Albion. “It’s bad during the game when you’re losing, but once they get over the loss, the spirits are high and it’s good to see the boys are happy to be around the club,” Bench said. “We’ll fix a few things up during the week, do a few things to our structure and hopefully … get that win that we’re searching for against Caroline Springs next week.” Elsewhere in division 1, Deer Park was on the end of a rare belting, going down by 68 points to Altona. St Albans went down on home soil by 18 points to Werribee Districts, while Brian Lake kicked four goals in Caroline Springs’ 33-point win over Sunshine Kangaroos. In division 3, Sunshine Heights, led by four goals from Mathew Serafin, pipped Braybrook in a thriller by five points. Daniel Bartolo and Nathan Black kicked four goals apiece in Albanvale’s 47-point victory over Laverton, while North Sunshine suffered a 165-point loss to a rejuvenated Glen Orden.

Calder United claimed all three points from a seven-goal epic with Alamein in the NPL Victoria Women’s at HA Smith Reserve on Saturday. Calder held on for a 4-3 victory, extending its lead at the top of the ladder to eight points and bringing Alamein’s six-game unbeaten run to an end. Aleks Sinclair put Calder in front when she nodded home a rebound off the crossbar in the 22nd minute. The visitors’ doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Angela Beard pounced on a looping pass from Stacey Papadopoulos and cut the ball back to Adriana Taranto, who calmly finished with her left foot. Only seconds after the restart, Alamein took the ball forward uncontested and halved the deficit through Lucy Johnson. Straight after half-time, Calder restored its two-goal advantage through a spectacular curling strike by Taranto. Alamein refused to yield, again cutting the deficit to a goal after a 76th minute goal to Johnson. Two minutes later, Calder rebuilt its two-goal lead when Sinclair played in substitute Polly Doran for a tap in. A late goal to Alamein’s Marielle Pastor made for a few nervous minutes for Calder, but it managed to hold on for a fourth straight win. In NPL Victoria men’s, Green Gully Cavaliers claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Hume City at Green Gully Reserve. Melbourne Knights played out a 1-1 draw with Kingston City at Knights Stadium on Friday night. The Triton has carried the weight of Mitsubishi light truck expectations for more than 40 years, and with the model year ’19 range, there’s no sign of them being offloaded any time soon. As I write this the Triton lies in overall third spot on the vehicle sales charts in Australia. Mitsubishi Australia is keen to keep its place in a weakened vehicle market. The new Triton comes in three body styles – Dual Cab, taking in the function of a pick-up truck with the comfort of an SUV; Club Cab, skewed more to commercial use with double doors and space behind the front seats; and Single Cab, with the capacity for a long cargo tray and two seats resistant to dirt and hard wear. There is a choice of two engines – a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel and similar-size petrol engine. A new six-speed automatic transmission is now available on diesel models. Two and four-wheel drive systems are offered across the range. Prices start at $22,490 for the entry-level 4X2 GLX Single Cab Chassis 2.4-litre petrol manual, the 4x4 GLX Club Cab Chassis 2.4L diesel manual comes in at $35,490 and the 4x4 GLS Premium 2.4L Dual Cab Pick Up diesel auto tops off the range at $51,990. All are plus on-road costs. On test was the 4x4 GLX 2.4L Dual Cab Pick Up diesel auto, costing $39,990.

There’s no denying the Triton is trying to make up lost ground on rivals and while it seems safe at third place on the sales chart, it will need some canny selling to overhaul the two market leaders. The new seven-year warranty is a good start.
