A candid look at world Southern Cross Grammar students are preparing to taking audiences on a journey of side-splitting misadventures in their latest production, Candide. Twenty students from the Caroline Springs school have spent the past term rehearsing the show, which opens on May 10. The production will feature puppet-like clowns, a chorus of singing air hostess and musical kitsch, as the main character, Candide embarks on a journey to be reunited with his childhood love which causes him to question his optimistic outlook on life. Drama teacher and director Lincoln Busby said the adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide will feature an outlandish and satirical look at the world. “I would like the audience to see the show as a satire on our no-worries culture, as much as a piece of entertaining theatrical escapism,” he said. “The cast and crew have tirelessly volunteered their time to bring this classic story to life.” Candide will be performed at the school on May 10, 17 and 18 at 7.30pm and May 11 at 2pm. Holiday road horror A 29-year-old man died and more than 100 motorists lost their licences in a horror Easter weekend on Brimbank’s roads. Brimbank topped the state for the number of offences (1025) committed during Victoria Police’s Operation Nexus. A St Albans man died in hospital following an incident in Deer Park on Good Friday. Police stopped the man’s vehicle on Ballarat Road about 7.15pm as part of a routine intercept.

While police were conducting a licence check, the man fled his vehicle and ran across Ballarat Road where he was struck by a car. He was taken to hospital and died the following day. Brimbank highway patrol Sergeant Andy Oakley said it was a distressing scene. “It was distressing for the friends he had in the car, the police at the scene and for the police who had to investigate,” Sergeant Oakley said. “He for some reason decided to run, he was driving without a licence so it was possibly to

avoid punishment, but suffered the ultimate punishment.” The incident is being investigated by Homicide Squad and Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives. Sergeant Oakley said the high number of speeding offences (339) was also cause for much concern. “It’s a shame drivers keep taking significant risks. We’re seeing things like drivers doing 150km/h in 70 zones,” he said. “Three hundred and thirty nine people

speeding in a five-day period is a significant number.” Sergeant Oakley said more than 40 people also lost their license for drink driving. Ten cars were also impounded across Brimbank, while 47 mobile phone offences were recorded. “It’s amazing how far you can actually see some people travel while constantly looking down,” Sergeant Oakley said. “All it takes is someone to step out in front of you while you’re looking down.”

Police numbers bolstered By Tate Papworth Brimbank police efforts to stamp out family violence have been given a significant boost – 14 additional family violence specialists. Police Minister Lisa Neville joined Victoria Police deputy commissioner Rick Nugent to announce the 2019-20 police allocation for the state. Brimbank will get five additional general duties officers as well as the 14 specialists. Ms Neville said the specialists were needed, given the prevalence of family violence incidents.
“Family violence is Victoria’s No.1 law and order issue – which is why we’re training even more officers with the skills they need to respond,” she said. “We’re seeing a relentless focus by police on crime and community safety, with record numbers of arrests, a decreasing crime rate and stronger community policing – but there’s still more to do.” The ability of police to respond to family violence incidents will be further bolstered with the establishment of a new dedicated training centre.
Deputy commissioner Rick Nugent said the centre, which will be based at the Victoria Police Academy, would also aid police in providing support to family violence victims. “The latest crime statistics show police attended more than 79,000 [family violence] incidents across the state in 2018, an increase of more than three per cent compared to the previous year,” he said. “Behind each statistic is someone whose life has been profoundly impacted. “The new centre will ensure officers at all ranks are better equipped with the capabilities
and confidence to support some of our most vulnerable community members and hold perpetrators to account. “The training will provide police officers with specialised and evidence-based training to improve their understanding of the complexities of family violence and keep victims at the centre of their response.” Brimbank recorded the seventh highest number of family violence incidents in Victoria in the year to June, 2018. Between July, 2017, and June last year, Victoria Police recorded 2065 family violence incidents in Brimbank.

Teen ready to hit it out of the park It’s the second time Jansen has represented Victoria. Last year she was a member of the side which claimed gold at the championships. Just three years into her baseball journey, Jansen has compiled a list of achievements even seasoned players would be proud of and she hopes to add to it. “I’d love to play for Australia,” she said. “Next year I want to make the Victorian White side for open women’s – that’s a development team and hopefully one day I’ll be able to make Victorian Blue, which is the open women’s team.”
Jansen credits the Essendon Baseball Club, her home side, with much of her development. “I started playing at Sunshine three years ago, but I moved to Essendon Baseball Club because they have a women’s program,” she said. “I was playing with girls who already played for Victoria and Australia and I really wanted to be like them. “The coaches, Rob and Bronwyn Gell – starting shortstop for Australia – have helped me so much.”

Kira Jansen is hitting home runs – literally. The 15-year old St Albans student represented Victoria at the Australian Women’s Baseball Championships this month and had a tournament to remember. The Victorian side won a bronze medal, but Jansen starred, finishing with a batting average of 0.471, which included a massive home run. “It was really exciting to hit a home run,” she said. “It was the first home run I’ve hit over the fence. But the day before against New South Wales, I hit one over centre field and it just kept on rolling.”
Community groups will have access to $600,000 in Brimbank council grants in 2019-20. The grants are provided by the council in a bid to help not-for-profit and community groups deliver projects and events across the municipality. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve encouraged all local groups to apply. This year the council is offering more support in the application process. “If you’ve ever thought about applying for a Community Grant but been unsure about how to do it – this is your year to apply,” Cr Congreve said. “We’re offering even more support to local community groups to give them the best possible chance of success – with seven information sessions, along with nine drop-in sessions where you can come along and ask questions or seek advice on your application.” Information sessions will be held across Brimbank and will include a Vietnamese language information session. Grants are available for festivals and events, sport and recreation, youth initiatives, community strengthening and a host of other initiatives. Priority will be given to applicants who reflect the key pillars of the council’s community vision: people, place, prosperity. Sunshine: super hub of the west By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has unveiled a bold plan to make Sunshine ‘the capital of Melbourne’s west’. The suburb is set to undergo a major transformation over the coming years with a number of landmark projects, including the Sunshine super hub, signed off. The council has released a draft action plan, Sunshine Rising, which outlines a road map for where it will funnel its resources into the suburb over the next six years.
Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council was determined to capitalise on recent investments in the area and has a vision for the suburb to be recognised as the capital of the west by 2050. “The recent announcement of the Western Rail Plan, including the Melbourne Airport Rail Link and Sunshine Super Hub, is a real game changer for Sunshine and Brimbank as a whole,” she said. “The $10 billion commitment towards constructing the Melbourne Airport Rail Link (MARL) via Sunshine provides a
transformative opportunity to unlock the immense potential of the west. “The Sunshine Super Hub is a landmark project that will reinvent Brimbank as a thriving economic centre – unlocking jobs now and for future generations, re-establishing Brimbank as an employment epicentre for Melbourne and Victoria’s west. “These major projects will deliver substantial economic, environmental and social and cultural benefits for Sunshine and the wider region – and firmly cement Sunshine’s role as centre of state significance, and gateway to
metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria, and beyond.” Opportunities to promote and attract more business and investment to the town centre are also considered in the plan. Representatives from the Sunshine Business Association, Victoria Police, VicRoads, Victoria University and other key stakeholders all provided input into the plan. The search is on for 60 volunteers to rattle tins and collect donations for the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal in Brimbank. The annual appeal will be held on the weekend of May 25 and 26 to help raise money for the Salvation Army’s homelessness, emergency relief and financial assistance programs. Major Simon Damen said having an extra 60 volunteers to help collect money at shopping centres and major intersections would allow the Salvation Army to collect donations during an additional weekend. He said the Red Shield Appeal was a simple way for people to help those in the community doing it tough. “Hardship does not discriminate,” he said. “Australians from all walks of life are turning to the Salvation Army for help. “We need the public’s support now to ensure we can continue to help. Solar sparks bill savings By Tate Papworth A Keilor East woman has cut the power bill in her five-person home to $5 a week. Annelies Brandjes moved into her new house – one of a group of off-the-plan townhouses – in February 2018. Her father, Jan, who has worked on energy efficient buildings for more than three decades knew adding solar panels to the house would reduce costs and Ms Brandjes said she jumped at the chance. “I’d always grown up knowing about sustainability options because of dad, but when the government announced the rebates, I leapt at the chance,” she said.

“It was a little over $7000 to install the panels, but I got about a quarter of that back and the money I’m saving each month will mean it pays for itself soon.” Since installing the solar panels in December, Ms Brandjes says her power bills have dropped from $80 a month to $20. With a wealth of experience in sustainability Jan helped make additional improvements to the property so his daughter would get more value for money. He oversaw the installation of insulation in the walls and ceiling of the property, including the space between the ground and second floors. He also ensured all gaps and cracks in the building were sealed, which was done with the permission of the builder, whose supervisor in

a twist of fate, had attended one of Jan’s building industry lectures on energy efficiency. While Ms Brandjes had a helping hand, she said it was simple enough to follow. “Dad helped with the technical side of things, but I found the Solar Victoria website really helpful,” Ms Brandjes said.

A street with new name Sunshine North’s large Vietnamese population could soon be recognised with a road name switch. Brimbank council has tabled plans to rename McGrath Place to Ben Thanh Place. The council says the current name is non-compliant with a council rule which states that in metropolitan urban areas, names must not duplicate another within five kilometres. McGrath Street, Sunshine and McGrath Close, Kealba both fall within a five kilometre distance of McGrath Place. It is deemed that the close proximity of the similarly named streets could put emergency service responses at risk and create confusion for mail services. There is one property numbered to McGrath Place, but 13 units are currently being developed on the site. The council says the road should be renamed prior to issuing occupancy permits to avoid any inconvenience to residents. The properties are due to be completed in June-July this year. The name Ben Thanh Place was proposed by the developer of the property and comes from a notable market located in a major city in Vietnam. Ben Thanh roughly translates to Wharf Citadel. The proposed name change will be put out for public consultation for a period of 30 days. Tate Papworth

Magical mystical fair Brimbank residents are being encouraged to get in touch with their spiritual side at this month’s Mystic Fair. Psychic clairvoyant Wilhelmina Handley and her business partner Belinda Blee are bringing the fair to Sunshine on May 5, offering psychic readings, palm readings, astrology, and reiki healings. They will also be selling colourful crystals, jewellery and essential oils. Ms Handley said the fair was about promoting holistic health and the psychic world.

MY bRiMbAnK Stuart Murdoch has been capturing Sunshine on film since 2000. He will share his photographs with the community at his new exhibition, Silver in Sunshine Stanza One, at the Sunshine Art Spaces Gallery from May 7-30. He speaks with Laura Michell.
I have called Brimbank home since 2000. What do you love about living in Sunshine? I love the diversity of people and the strong sense of multiculturalism. I also like its proximity to the CBD, as well as the fantastic parks and gardens we are lucky to have. Secretly, I like the remnants of its industrial past. In another life, I served my apprenticeship in one of the factories that used to be on Ballarat Road – a long, long time ago. I love all the change that is going on and can’t wait to see what Sunshine shapes up to be. What, if anything, would you like to change? Nothing – I love it the way it is. But, of course, changes are happening. Some rapidly, others not so. Well, maybe one thing – the traffic jams that happen on Hampshire Road near the station, shops and transit terminus. Why did you decide to start capturing Sunshine on film? It was never a conscious decision. I have been making and taking photographs seriously since 1987. When we bought our house here, there was space to build a darkroom. This enabled me to continue work in the mode I had been since 1987, predominantly with film. Photographing where I lived is what I always did. Watching the demolition of the Britax factory was somewhat of a catalyst, though. I
realised I was photographing certain things that either had already disappeared or were going to in the foreseeable future. Digging through my archives, I realised I had photographed traces of things like the former croquet club and the municipal band building. I began looking at my archives and found a lot of images I wanted to share with the community, so I set about making prints of them and then applied to exhibit at the most appropriate space, Sunshine Arts Spaces. What can people expect from your exhibition? Fourteen beautifully printed silver gelatin prints that are quietly spoken images which hopefully raise more questions than supply answers. Is there a particular photograph from your exhibition that stands out to you – and if so, why? My imagery rarely operates on a stand-alone principal – each picture resonates with the others around it. People may be surprised to see parts of Sunshine they had long forgotten existed. Some of the images were made as long ago as 2006! Where is your favourite local place to spend time? Well my darkroom, of course! I am also really enjoying the new eateries, coffee shops and bars that are popping up. Places like Sunshine Social, Braybrook Station and the Station Hotel.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gives the thumbs up to a cafe with class Our post-kung fu Saturday routine usually runs along the lines spicy Vietnamese, Indian or African food. But today we try something a little different – Bruger, which is just down Barkly from Sims and 501 Receptions. It’s a sister cafe to the nearby West 48 in Essex Street – but it has quite a different feel. The long room is all about high stools and heaps of wood and stone. It’s classy – and perhaps more like a bar than a cafe. We take note of the breakfast options and then ignore them. But the sparks of imagination that show in our lunch meals are in evidence, too, on the breakfast list. Sambal chilli eggs for, example. Or – more hearty – polish sausage with fried egg, gruyere, gherkin relish and kewpie mayo. Bennie enjoys his daily special of eight-hour pork belly on a soba and papaya salad with nam jim dressing ($18.50). He makes special mention of the shredded pork – “very soft�, says he. In addition to the listed ingredients, there’s a stack of bean sprouts and peanuts and a nifty slab of crackling. Salad Boy invariably gives papaya salad and related dishes serious consideration when we’re out and about elsewhere, so that’s why he orders this at Bruger. But while it pleases, it’s fair to record that this cafe outing is notably muted in terms of the sort of tang, zing, sourness, heat and bite

The ingredients – pilaf rice, brisket, coriander chutney, pine nuts and cumin “hommus� – are familiar. Yet here they are teamed in a magical way, the contrasting flavours bouncing off each other with tasty glee. Often, when pine nuts are listed, they end up constituting little more than a garnish. Here they play a plentiful and significant role. The brisket is superb – high on smoky flavour, yet distributed through the rice in small pieces. Want to grab some of that great barbecue vibe without going full carnivore? Right here, with this dish, is your solution. I know there’s those who’ll question the prices. But they’re very fair for food of such good quality and the serves are suitably filling for not-too-heavy lunchtime fare.

SPORT Keilor Park plays on in hard-fought return to the field It was another tough day on the scoreboard for Keilor Park, but the side is well aware of the reality of what’s ahead in Essendon District Football League division 2. Having not fielded a side last season, getting a team back up and going this year is the biggest win. While they’ve done that, being competitive for four quarters and maybe pinching a win seems a long way off. Devils coach John Mangos said the main aim for the club was to keep up the positive attitude. “The scores are what we thought they might be,” he said. “We had a chat to the boys and we all know we will do it a bit tough this year. “It’s about getting people down to the club and preparing for next season.” Mangos said the group was still learning the game plan and it was taking some time. He said it was hard not having a reserves
side, meaning they were limited with what they could do at training with running full field drills. On Saturday, the Devils faced Jacana, which was also searching for its first win of the season. With a couple of players away and a couple of injuries, the Devils’ task was even harder. While the Devils tried hard they were nowhere near it, losing 28.1 (179)-3.5 (23). Mangos said there was some positive signs in the match. “The tackle count improved dramatically, so we got that side of things right. “The guys came to play. “Cameron Cloke [who kicked 10 goals for the Jaguars] said they thought late in the game that our boys might have given up, but they didn’t so that is a positive.” Michael Usai was a standout for the Devils in his first game for the season, while captain

St Albans fights back By Lance Jenkinson St Albans recovered from an uncertain start to overrun Caroline Springs in a 15-point victory in the Western Region Football League division 1 at Town Centre Oval on Saturday. A rough opening term saw the Saints trail by 25 points at quarter-time and they appeared a long way off the form that had seem them impress in the opening two rounds. However, the Saints quickly regained their mojo, banging on six goals to one in the second quarter to get back on track and on their way to a second win in three starts under new coach Perry Meka. In a sign of trust building between the coach and his players, Meka stayed calm in the face of adversity at quarter-time and empowered his players to believe they could get back into the contest without needing to resort to shock treatment. “It was quite calm to be honest,” Meka said. “I summed up to myself, do I barrel them or do I keep them calm? “I just went with the calm thing and said we need to even up the scores by half-time, we need to fight our way back. “Let’s not go over the top and try too many things, just kick one, get some momentum back, drag the score back and play a bit of tempo footy and play our style. “That’s what they did and it worked out OK.” However, Meka will not let his players forget about their poor first quarter. There were some disappointing aspects of St Albans’ start that will need to be addressed. Given his players reaction, there might not need to be too much time devoted to stressing the point. “A few of the players came up to me after the game and said that if we play our style of footy, we can hit the scoreboard, but when we go away from that and run forward and do things that is not in our game plan, opposition teams will score against us,” Meka said. St Albans kicked 11 of the last 16 goals of the game. The Saints should have won more comfortably, but their return of 1.10 from 11 last-quarter scoring shots was disappointing. “You’ve got to give Caroline Springs credit, they put pressure on us and they didn’t give up,” Meka said. The key to St Albans’ comeback was getting the stoppages on their own terms. The Saints began to win the clearances as soon as Abraham Kur was thrust into the ruck. there and he ended up jumping over the top of his opponent,” Meka said. “Abs matched up better for us in the ruck and ‘Kova’ took some grabs and got us going up forward, so it worked out well.” Shylo Smith capped a stellar game on the ball for St Albans with two goals. Matthew Gundry was effervescent off half-back, while Sam Peet was a target in attack. Ben Said was a livewire in attack, finishing with 5.6 from 11 scoring shots. Meka was proud of St Albans’ reaction when its back was against the wall. “They fought back from adversity and got
a win, which is exactly what we asked,” he said. St Albans will face Werribee Districts in a clash between two 2-1 sides at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday. In other division 1 games, Sunshine romped to a 70-point win over Point Cook at Saltwater Reserve. Deer Park cruised to a 230-point win over Albion with Jase Perkins kicking 10 goals and Jack Redpath and Mark Galea adding seven each. Altona pipped Spotswood by 10 points, while Hoppers Crossing overcame Werribee Districts by 21.

Cobras see off sting of defeat If a week is a long time in football, 12 days was an eternity for Albanvale to stew over its shocking home opening loss to Glen Orden in Western Region Football League division 3 on April 13. The Cobras were disappointed with their showing in front of their home fans – and could do nothing about it until their Anzac Day clash with Braybrook. A massive 76-point win over the Brookers was just what the Cobras needed to get back to feeling good about themselves once more. Cobras coach Andrew Bryson was delighted. “The whole theme coming off the loss to Glen Orden was to re-group, re-focus and ultimately respond,” he said. “To the boys’ credit, they did all those three things almost from the moment we lost to Glen Orden. “They weren’t happy with how they played and I think it stung a few of them a bit and they responded accordingly.” All eyes were on Albanvale boom recruit Nathan Black and how his nagging achilles issue would respond after being managed during the Easter break. Black returned to his glorious best with 10 goals, though exited when the points were in the bag. It is the second time in three games that Black has kicked bags of 10 goals. “I’m not too concerned with how many goals he kicks – it’s his second and third efforts when the ball was in his area, that’s what’s going to get other people involved,” Bryson said. Bryson was happy with Albanvale’s defence, which held Braybrook to 69 points. He praised backmen Liam Ryan, Sean Blake and Jacob Maschewski for their tireless efforts. David Mundi thrived in his role on the wing, providing plenty of drive, while Kym Taylor continued his strong start to the season with four goals. Albanvale will be looking for its first home win of the season when Laverton pays a visit on Saturday. Hard work on defence keeps Reds on a winning path Sydenham Park has occupied the field for 450 minutes in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 soccer this season – and conceded a solitary goal. The Reds were unbreakable again on Saturday in a 1-0 win over North Sunshine Eagles at Keilor Lodge Reserve. A fourth clean sheet for goalkeeper Juro Salic has pushed the Reds to second on the table – three points in arrears of the ladder leaders, Preston Lions. Reds coach Denii Lisolajski said his team’s impressive defensive record was the product of preparation. “The boys don’t just rock up on a Saturday and try to hold off as much as they can,” he said. “They work their socks off on a Tuesday and a Thursday. We work on structure a fair bit … to their credit, I’m getting a response from them. “They’re sticking to the game plan, so it’s pretty positive at the moment.” It was a case of better late than never when Sydenham Park found a winner against North

“Really pleased for Chris today because he’s been working so hard behind the scenes,” Lisolajski said. “It was just a matter of time. “With some assistance and encouragement from his teammates, today he got rewarded.” Lisolajski also tipped his hat to goalkeeper Salic. Salic is an accidental keeper, having played most of his youth career as a central midfielder until a goalkeeper in his team was red carded. Lisolajski was Salic’s coach at the time and called on an outfield player to step into the goalkeeper’s role – and Salic put his hand up. It took just one game for Lisolajski to be impressed with Salic’s glove work. “I approached him after the game and asked him if he’s considered being a goalkeeper,” Lisolajski said. “He said, ‘No I haven’t, but I felt like I could be one’. So I seriously recommended it to him. Three years on, he’s the No.1 keeper at Sydenham. “He’s absolutely quality as a keeper and he’s like another player on the park because he’s so
comfortable with the ball at his feet given he was a midfielder. “A lot of praise has to go to Roy Hunter, our goalkeeping coach.” Sydenham Park will be looking to continue its strong form when it travels to FC Clifton Hill on Saturday. With a newly constructed team, Lisolajski is adamant the Reds have not reached their peak. “We’re nowhere near our best at the moment, but we’re still dominating games and picking up points,” he said. Imports bolster Thunder By Lance Jenkinson Two new imports are driving Keilor Thunder’s rise up the rankings in the Big V basketball men’s state championship. Americans Mike Anderson and Chris Kaba have fitted into the Thunder line-up and team culture like a glove in their first eight games. The Thunder holds a 6-2 record following Sunday’s 93-86 win over Werribee Devils and both Anderson and Kaba are having a major influence over results. Anderson’s impact has been profound. The former NBA G League prospect has played a starring role, averaging 23.7 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. He is shooting an impressive 62.5 per cent from the field and 50 per cent from the three point arc. It is an all-round package from Anderson. “He’s a good defender, an elite rebounder, he’s very athletic and long and he’s got a seven-foot wingspan and that obviously helps,” Thunder coach Liam Glascott said. “He’s also dynamic – he can play against shorter guys or bigger guys.” What stands out about Anderson is his ability to read the game situation. The 27-year-old knows the right times to bring his teammates into the play and the times when he needs to press the “go” button. “He’s exactly the guy we wanted and needed,” Glascott said. “He’s a massive team player. “I find he could score 40 to 50 every week if he really wanted to, but he loves getting his teammates involved, especially early on, he’ll give up his own shots to give other guys opportunities and to get them into the game. “He does know when we need a go-to bucket and he knows how to get that go-to bucket with a shot for himself or getting someone else into position.” The addition of Kaba gives Keilor a dynamic import combination. Kaba transferred from Knox and has averaged 14 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. “He’s a 6-7 left-handed shooter, long, athletic and can really stroke the ball,” Glascott said. “He’s another good piece for us. “Hopefully he becomes a local at the end of this season, which would add to our depth a bit more going forward.” Of the local players, B.J. Symons has taken his game to another level. The youngster has excelled in whatever role given to him. “B.J.’s been a standout for us in the last three games,” Glascott said. “He runs the floor really well, he’s got great touch around the ring and he gets to the right spots. Glascott believes his team is a genuine threat. “A top-four finish will definitely be on the cards, but we’d like to push for top two to guarantee ourselves a home court advantage in the finals. “We’ve got a bit of catching up to do, but I’m quietly confident we can do that and get on track to get that goal happening.” The key to Keilor’s success will be its defence. Glascott-coached teams have prided
themselves on being ruthless defensively and this season is no different. “We’re the best defensive team in the comp,” he declared without hesitation. “We have some great one-on-one defenders that I can utilise throughout the game and give guys different match-ups. “If you’ve seen the scores throughout the competition, teams have been scoring 100 or 110 points, but the highest we’ve had scored against us was 86.”
Melbourne Knights came back from a goal down at half-time to beat Green Gully Cavaliers 2-1 on the back of two exquisite set pieces in a National Premier League derby at Knights Stadium on Friday night. The Cavaliers led at half-time after an opportunistic goal by Timmy Purcell in the eighth minute. The Knights found a way back into the contest through a goal to Hamish Watson in the 74th minute. Watson rose high to head home a Corey Sewell corner. Four minutes later, the Knights had the lead after a goal from Tomislav Uskok.
