A dawn to remember Brimbank will once again pause in commemoration this Anzac Day, with services taking place across the municipality. For Caroline Springs RSL, the day will have added significance thanks to the unveiling of its new war memorial at Lake Caroline. Caroline Springs RSL membership officer Peter Burquest said it was an ideal time to unveil the memorial. “We’re right on the lake, about 100 metres away from WestWaters Hotel,” he said. “It’s well lit up every night, we’ve got rows of poppies and the ‘Lest We Forget’ adorning it – it’s a nice feature for Anzac Day.” Caroline Springs RSL will hold its dawn service at the new lakeside memorial from 6am on Thursday. People are asked to arrive by 5.45am. Across town, Sunshine RSL will hold a dawn service from 6.45am at the RSL in Dickson Street. Sunshine RSL president Gary Collins said he was hoping to see a lot of young faces among the crowd. “It’s a bit tricky to gauge numbers this year because it coincides with Easter,” Mr Collins said. “In the past we’ve had 1500 to 2500, so we’d be hoping to see a similar turnout this year, particularly with the younger generation – it’s always fantastic to see lots of young faces out there.”

Rates decrease flagged By Tate Papworth Almost three-quarters of Brimbank residential property owners will receive a decrease in their rates next financial year. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve presented the council’s draft budget for 2019-20 at last week’s meeting and said the decreases were a big win for residents. “The key take-out and message to the ratepayers as part of this budget is that in 2019-20, 72 per cent of residential properties will receive a decrease in their rates, which is a

really, really great story for us to be able to tell,” Cr Congreve said. “The draft budget also proposes a new rates differential for commercial and industrial land – or vacant land – which will be implemented … the new differential is intended to encourage the development of commercial and industrial land, therefore reducing the problems that can be associated with vacant land, such as illegal rubbish dumping. “The new rates differential will mean that these properties contribute a greater share of the overall rates council collects, but it will not

increase the total amount of money council collects in terms of rates. Instead, it will mean that other rateable properties attract a lower portion of rates.” The council’s operating budget for the year is $285.3 million, with capital works topping the list of expenditures. In total, $85.8 million will be spent on capital works in 2019-20. Sports facility upgrades will receive $32 million, roads and footpaths $25.8 million and town centre upgrades $5.4 million. Playgrounds and parks ($4.9 million), sustainability projects ($1.9 million) and bike

and shared paths ($1.7 million) will also receive significant investment. Cr Congreve said the capital works spend was a substantial increase on last year’s $59.6 million. “What all this adds up to is that we’re creating a better quality of life for the Brimbank community – better recreation facilities, better streetscapes, more efficient and enjoyable ways to get around the city, all with an eye towards sustainability,” she said. Tree vandals strike Taylors Lakes By Laura Michell Vandals have poisoned five trees – valued at $60,000 – in Taylor Lakes. Brimbank council believes the trees, which are on the corner of Parmelia Drive and Benton Way, were poisoned in late 2018. It said aerial photographs of the area show the trees in good health at that time. The council has not said what the trees were poisoned with. Council infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the five trees,

including four mature trees, were eucalyptus polyanthemos, or red box, and capable of growing up to 15 metres. He said the trees were on council’s preferred species list and would be replaced. “Council has installed signs to alert people to the damage, request information and raise awareness about the benefits of street trees,” Mr Whiteside said. “Council will trim the trees to make them safe. We’ll leave them standing for a while with a sign saying that poisoning is illegal vandalism. After that, we’ll replace the trees

with a similar-sized eucalyptus in line with our Urban Forest Strategy.” The Parmelia Drive trees are among 600 trees vandalised in Brimbank last year. That figure accounts for 12 per cent of trees planted or being maintained in Brimbank. Mr Whiteside said most of the vandalism was to street trees, although the council also experienced a small number of vandalism incidents involving multiple trees in parks and reserves. He said trees were important to Brimbank as they helped cool suburbs, shade paths and beautify neighbourhoods.

“Council is working hard to increase the number of street trees … to help protect our neighbourhoods from the urban heat island effect – which can significantly increase temperatures in built-up areas,” he said. “Council selects street trees that will suit each particular planting site, fit in with neighbourhood character, thrive in local conditions and minimise potential interference with existing infrastructure.” Anyone with concerns about trees near their property – or who wants to report damaged trees – is asked to contact council on 9249 4000.

Instagram hit has a new go-to A Deer Park woman has partnered with a social networking giant to help women find their go-to gals. Alyssa Ho founded My Go To Gal to enable women to network and make new friends after her Instagram page of motivational posts garnered a cult following. The concept has blossomed, with a number of successful events helping forge new friendships. Ms Ho said the events had been full of joy. “The idea is to present a fun, relaxed environment where girls can have fun and make friends,” she said.

“We’ve got a major event coming up in July which will have music, live drawings, flower walls, BFF speed dating, guest speakers and lots of food. “We’ve found a lot of the people who come to these events are new to Melbourne and may not really know anyone, so it’s been great to help them build connections.” So successful has the concept been that networking giant Bumble has joined the party. “We’ve partnered with Bumble from March through to June, so we’re hosting two events

per month with them,” she said. “We initially approached them about partnering for our July event and things just evolved “I’m still balancing my nine-to-five job and this, but I just love the idea of bringing women together and empowering them.” The July event – Girls Just Want to Have Fun – will be held in Mentone and Ms Ho is expecting a strong turnout. Councillor conduct hearings into allegations against former mayor John Hedditch cost Brimbank ratepayers almost $20,000. Two arbitration hearings and a conduct panel, incurred a total cost of $19,116.30, according to the council’s April governance report. Cr Hedditch was cleared of all allegations. The hearings were formed after Cr Bruce Lancashire accused Cr Hedditch of conflict of interest and engaging in bullying behaviour. The scathing findings of the Conduct Panel dismissed all 13 of Cr Lancashire’s allegations and said the council’s internal dispute resolution process for dealing with alleged code of conduct breaches lacked clarity. The council has since revised its procedures to be more specific in both the process and the timelines involved in each step of the process. At last week’s council meeting Cr Hedditch welcomed the changes. “There was an enormous amount of money spent inside council dealing with these issues as they were going on and I guess for me the question is – Would we do it again? Why did it happen? “And then I look at our code of conduct review and the internal dispute resolution review and [these changes] does strengthen it quite a bit,” he said. “The inclusion of timelines and various other improvements to the dispute resolution process will help council work through matters like these should they occur again.” Tate Papworth

Brimbank Councillors have voted to endorse the Draft Annual Budget 2019-2020 for public consultation. The budget reflects community input and Council’s vision for Brimbank. The vast majority of residential ratepayers (72 per cent) will receive a reduction in their rates for 2019-2020 under the Draft Budget. The Draft Budget proposes a significant increase in Council’s Capital Works spend to $85.8 million. It also includes $600,000 for community groups and not-for-profit organisations to deliver projects and events that help make Brimbank stronger, through the 2019/2020 Community Grants Program.

Council’s focus is to create a vibrant and harmonious community by investing in our built and natural environments and community facilities, to support our community to have the best possible quality of life. The Draft Budget includes funding towards development of the St Albans Health and Wellbeing Hub in Keilor Downs. Council is proud to get this project underway with a significant investment in 2019-2020 and subsequent funding in the Long Term Financial Plan. Council will continue to advocate Federal and Victorian governments to invest in this and other key priorities – while also seeking investment in our city from the private sector, and

finding innovative new ways to deliver our services to the community. Matildas cash bid fails By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has expressed interest in becoming home base for the Matildas, but it won’t be allocating additional funding for the bid in its budget. The council last month threw its hat into the ring to house the proposed $60-$80 million elite training base for the national women’s soccer side. Because the bid came in March, it missed the council’s annual budget process. Cr Bruce Lancashire unsuccessfully tried to add an amendment to the draft budget, allocating $300,000 towards the bid at last week’s meeting.

“Competition for this exciting opportunity will be fierce, with seven councils vying for the honour of being the home of the Matildas,” he said. “We need to demonstrate that we are the best location. This is much more than offering a site or sites and lodging the expression of interest. “We need to demonstrate that these sites are suitable and appropriate for the Matildas – and to achieve this a number of studies and planning investigations may be required. “Some of this work can be done in-house, however some will require specialists. It is important that we demonstrate that we are prepared to put our money where our mouth is.” Cr Margaret Giudice said the council wasn’t in a position to carry out the work suggested.

“I don’t believe that this council is ready to do that kind of work,” she said. “I don’t think that this council should be looking at anything like that right now. “We need more clarity around what is required and I would expect that, with the federal election coming up and a state election just being held, perhaps the state and federal governments would like to handle the ball on this issue.” Cr Virginia Tachos also spoke against the

motion saying: “Our commitment in this council is to the community and to our clubs,” she said. “Our clubs, as we inherited, have been lagging behind in infrastructure. We’ve seen some of these clubs and we’ve seen the state they’re in and quite frankly they’re condemnable some of them. We’ve made a $32 million commitment to improve and bring these clubs up. That $300,000 is for our community and it belongs in our community.”

Bus fleet goes green A fleet of new hybrid technology buses will soon be rolled out on Brimbank roads. All 50 buses in the hybrid fleet will be in service on routes used by bus operator CDC in Wyndham, Oakleigh and Sunshine by mid-2022. The first bus was launched in Melbourne last week and will be followed by another 30 buses being phased in over the next 12 months. They’ll be used on Brimbank bus routes including the 408, 605, 630 and 414. CDC Victoria chief executive Nicholas Yap said it was an exciting initiative. “Our new fleet of hybrid buses is an exciting development which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to delivering transport innovation by reducing both the emissions and fuel consumption of our fleet,” he said. “As a business, we’re deeply committed to helping shape a better future for the next generation through reducing our carbon footprint.” The buses are expected to deliver significant reductions in emissions, noise and fuel consumption as well as improving the passenger experience. A series of successful trials across the state found that the buses use 30 per cent less fuel and significantly reduce noise during idling and when departing stops. Tate Papworth

Alarm over smoke detectors By Tate Papworth The MFB is urging Brimbank residents to ensure their homes are equipped with working smoke detectors following the release of alarming new data. The MFB has revealed that just 36 per cent of 107 Brimbank homes where a fire occurred in 2018 had working smoke alarms. Twenty-four of the homes didn’t have a smoke alarm installed at all. MFB acting deputy chief officer community resilience Adam Dalrymple warned the

community against complacency when it came to the life-saving equipment. “Working smoke alarms provide a vital early warning and are designed to help you and your loved ones escape during a fire,” he said. “MFB was called to 1572 residential structure fires across the metropolitan district last year – and 193 homes had no smoke alarms. “This is a real concern. Smoke alarms should be installed in bedrooms and all living areas, which is where most fatal fires start. Without one you are putting yourself and your family in danger.”

St Albans was Brimbank’s worst offending suburb. MFB crews were called to 29 fires in the suburb last year and on eight occasions no smoke alarm was present. Smoke alarms failed to operate on a further two occasions. Sunshine West was also a high-offending suburb. Of the 13 houses MFB crews were called to, four were not fitted with a smoke alarm. “It’s important to test your smoke alarm by pushing the button every month to ensure it will work when you need it most,”

Mr Dalrymple said. “Regardless of the type of smoke alarm you have, all smoke alarms need to be cleaned monthly and replaced every 10 years.” While smoke alarm maintenance is a responsibility of the landlord Mr Dalrymple said renters also had a role to play. “Tenants are responsible for testing and cleaning the smoke alarms in their rental property monthly,” he said. “Renters must contact their real estate agent or landlord if their smoke alarms are not working or emitting an occasional chirping sound.”

Big rap for a music hit A crew of Brimbank students has struck a chord through a school holiday program with a difference. St Albans Secondary College hosted On Track, a two-week intensive course giving students insights into the music industry. Students from St Albans Secondary College, Catholic Regional College St Albans and Melton and surrounding schools were invited to take part in the program, which is aimed at helping at-risk or disengaged young people. During the mornings students took part in specialist DJ classes, learning how to spin with some of Australia’s best DJs. Specialist speakers were on hand to give students advice about breaking into the music industry in Australia. Hip-hop classes – in which students learnt to write, rap and perform their own music – were a highlight.

Hip-hop artist Mantra, one of the program’s mentors, said it had been an amazing experience. “Essentially, we want to give young people, who might not have access to much, mentoring opportunities like this,” he said. “Want to give them a real taste of what it’s like to be part of the music industry and be an artist. “It’s been a huge inspiration for people like me to be involved in stuff like this. “I know I can speak for fellow artists involved, that it’s so cool to be able to do what you’re most passionate about with a bunch of young people who are hungry and passionate about it as well.” Tate Papworth James, Jayda and Yusuf have been part of the On Track music holiday program. Campers see the light A group of Brimbank young people has embarked on a camp with a difference. The group, involved with Sunshine’s Youth Junction, headed to Blue Light Youth Camp in Maldon recently. The camp has close links with Victoria Police and is aimed at providing fun in a relaxed environment to build positive relationships between young people and police. Youth Junction communications and marketing co-ordinator Kristine Bugeja said the camp had many benefits. “Essentially it’s two and a half days of social activities, engaging young people who are disadvantaged or deemed at risk during school holidays,” she said. “It’s a great way to keep kids … away from anti-social affiliations.

“We took four staff along who offered case management and non-clinical therapy. It’s important that case managers attend for that support, so there’s a reason behind the camp – it’s not just throwing them in a camp to stay off the streets.” While the camp only went for two and a half days, Ms Bugeja said it was a busy affair. “We had things like bubble soccer, rock wall climbing, bike riding, cooking classes, mini golf … lots of outdoor activities,” she said. “It was really well supported by the kids – to see the turn-out we got was really significant.” Ms Bugeja said she hoped the camp would became a regular fixture. A proposal to rename McGrath Place, Sunshine North, to Ben Thanh Place, Sunshine North has been put forward for public consultation. The council said the current name does not comply with regulations, which state that in metropolitan urban areas, names must not duplicate another name within five kilometres.

Firefighters were called to a unit fire in St Albans last Tuesday. The two-bedroom unit was ablaze and the resident unaccounted for when units arrived. A search of the property, determined the occupants weren’t home. The fire, which was caused by an electrical issue, was brought under control within 20 minutes. Vietnamese cheer flag victory By Tate Papworth The Co Vang will fly in Brimbank. Rapturous applause reverberated through Brimbank’s council chambers last week as a large contingent of the Vietnamese community celebrated a council decision to allow the flag to be flown during times of special significance to the Australian-Vietnamese community. The viewing gallery was standing room only as the community members showed up in force to watch the council decide to officially recognise the flag as a symbol of the

Vietnamese-Australian community and its refugee experiences. Cr Duyen Anh Pham said the flag symbolised the fight for freedom and democracy for many people from the former South Vietnam. “Brimbank as a city has a significant portion of Australians of a Vietnamese background,” she said. “According to census figures, over 13 per cent of Brimbank residents have a Vietnamese background. “Standing to be a councillor in local government, we act on what our people want and need and this is what our people want.”

Cr Georgina Papafotiou was the sole councillor to speak against the council officer recommendation to recognise the flag. “In Brimbank, we have over 160 different nationalities, which means we have over 160 official flags,” Cr Papafotiou said. “Each culture has significant days where their official flag could be flown and recognised. “I have high respect for our Vietnamese community and recognise their struggles … but I will have to abstain from voting today which means I cannot vote for, but I won’t vote against, this recommendation.

“What we start doing for one culture within our municipality, we must do for all the other cultures. “I have concerns that once we start flying one flag, it may create political issues with other cultures within our community.” Cr Pham disagreed with Cr Papafotiou’s sentiments. “The Co Vang flag is not a country flag, but it is a flag that the community who live in Brimbank believe in,” she said. “It’s a symbolic flag. It represents their call for freedom and identity.”

Pool’s winter welcome The Sunshine Leisure Centre’s outdoor pool will be available this winter. Brimbank council is trialing winter hours for the outdoor pool – which is heated – following community demand. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was an exciting time for the leisure centre. “We’ve taken on feedback from members who said they were keen to have access to the outdoor pool outside of the summer months,” Cr Congreve said. “So instead of closing the outdoor pool at the end of the summer season like we normally would, we’re starting a winter trial at Sunshine Leisure Centre from May 1. “This means the outdoor pool will stay open for the entire year – so if you’re keen for a swim in the great outdoors in the middle of winter, Sunshine Leisure Centre’s got you covered.” The outdoor pool will be open from 6am-9am and 4pm-7pm Monday to Friday,

and 8am to noon on weekends under the new winter hours. Cr Congreve said there were more improvements on the way. “Later this year, we’ll be opening up the gym 24/7 to our members,” she said. In addition to using equipment in the gym, members will be able to access virtual group fitness classes on demand. “This is all about improving our service offering,” Cr Congreve said. Other improvements will include the refurbishment of the foyer and reception area, heating in the outdoor changerooms and a facelift to the indoor changerooms. David Nguyen has found the perfect outlet for his perfectionist streak. Nguyen, a teacher at Braybrook College, took up archery after coming across it by chance about seven years ago. Rising through the ranks at Braybrook-based Southern Cross Archery Club to become an instructor, Nguyen said the sport had become a passion. “It was a fascination with the process,” he said. “I was not really a team sports person – with archery, it allows me to live out my perfectionism.” Nguyen is taking his love for the sport to a worldwide audience. He recently added another string to his bow, notching up 100,000 subscribers to his archery-themed YouTube channel. His NUSensei channel has developed a loyal following thanks to its mix of coaching, tips and archery insights. Nguyen said reaching the higher echelons of the sport required determination and practice, practice, practice. His club coach role cuts into his own time with bow in hand, but Nguyen is pleased to be able to share his experience. Nguyen is encouraging people to head to Southern Cross Archery Club at Pennell Reserve, Braybrook, from 10am on Saturdays for introductory beginner sessions.

At the Sunshine Magistrates Court on January 14, 2019, a warrant was issued for the arrest of David GUNN. The charge relevant to the offence being conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. A further warrant to arrest is in existence for the offence of contravening a community corrections order. Police are seeking information as to GUNN’S current whereabouts.

Plans are afoot to turn St Albans into a food, art and culture capital. The final draft of the council’s Go St Albans plan to revitalise the suburb was approved at a council meeting last week. Upgrades to take place over the next 12 months will include the implementation of the Alfrieda Street Plaza, preparing a carparking management plan and activating key locations such as Princess Street. Cr Virginia Tachos said changes had already started. “We want to attract even more people to visit, shop, work and even live in St Albans,” she said. “We’ve already taken a tired and disjointed precinct around Errington Reserve and are now slowly transforming it to an amazing cultural precinct. “Once Errington phase two is completed, it will make it a place we’re all proud of and will make it a tourist attraction with arts, food, culture all merging together.” Cr Tachos said plans for St Albans include improvements to cleaning and maintenance standards at the station, delivering more murals to help activate areas throughout the precinct and investigating the possibility of starting a twilight market. Another main objective of the plan is to build on proximity to the Sunshine Hospital and Victoria University in a bid to attract a complementary range of health and specialist

The Australian Democrats will give their preferences to Mr Alex Knight in the Melbourne West Upper House fight. A party statement this week said it was a difficult decision among “rather unpalatable” alternatives. Democrats preferences would go to Labor in other western suburbs seats.

Want to meet new people and learn new skills close to home? Discover shared interests and create friendships at your local Neighbourhood House. Melton City Council is celebrating Neighbourhood House Week with a range of free activities between 6 May and 16 May. There are six Neighbourhood Houses across the City of Melton offering dozens of free, or low cost, activities for the local community, all year round. Cr Bob Turner On Anzac Day, our community comes together to remember the sacrifice of the many thousands of young Australian men and women of our armed services who have given so much that we may live in peace.

A new Sons of the West program starts next month and I encourage men of all ages to sign up for this excellent annual event which is run n partnership with the Western Bulldogs Football Club.

I strongly believe that our community today can only benefit from better understanding the courage, duty, commitment and loyalty shown by the ANZACs and returned soldiers throughout Australia’s history.

The 10 week program aims to improve men’s mental and physical health and wellbeing and is completely free. Previous Sons of the West participants have really ‘kicked goals’ in their journey to wellbeing with some inspiring stories as a result of taking part in the program.

Therefore, I encourage residents to attend one of Council’s dawn services at Melton or Caroline Springs to honour not only the brave young soldiers of World War One, but everyone who has served their country so valiantly since then. Both services start at 6am at the Cenotaph on High Street, Melton, and the War Memorial on Lake Street, Caroline Springs.

Afternoon and evening sessions will be weekly in Melton West and Taylors Hill, focusing on fitness, nutrition and reducing stress. Cr Steve Abboushi I’m pleased to share the news that City of Melton residents will soon be able to get their sneakers on and check out the new extension to the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre. The extension features two new indoor high ball courts, 12 tennis courts, three external basketball rings and a competition-sized external netball court, new change rooms, a commercial kitchen and a large community room space. It really is an impressive addition, making the centre one of the best sporting facilities in Melbourne, and it was a delight to tour the centre which will be fully open to the public in the next few weeks. I’d like to thank the State Government and Tennis Australia for their support of this $12 million development. These partnerships with Council are vital to the success of a number of local infrastructure projects.

Almost half a million girls and women play football across Australia, so it makes sense that female-friendly change rooms should be available in our local sporting clubs. That’s why Council is committed to refurbishing existing facilities that are currently non-compliant for female participation in sport. The 2019/20 draft budget includes upgrades to the Ian Cowie Pavilion and the Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve Pavilion to improve change room infrastructure that caters for all participants. Quick tips to help sell your home This checklist will help you take the first critical steps towards selling your home in 2019, writes Kate Farrelly from Domain.

2. Inspect properties in your neighbourhood You’ll want to physically inspect properties so you can see how your home compares with the stock available to buyers. Matt Walther of ClearHome, a company that helps clients get their property ready for sale or rent, says this is the best way for would-be vendors to learn about the competition. “Have a look at what else is on the market, because ideally you’ll want your property to match or exceed the standard of what’s already available,” he says. 3. Get a pest and building inspection A pest and building inspection report will highlight any major issues with your property and give you the option to deal with these before your sales campaign.

1. Research the market The property market can be a fickle beast, so it’s important to have a good understanding of what’s happening in your area before you list your house for sale. Mark Newell, director of housePro, a company that guides clients through the process of buying and selling property, says one of the easiest ways to get a handle on your local market is to observe at least one campaign cycle – a minimum of six to eight weeks. Knowledge is everything. You can also use online tools such as Home Price Guide to analyse recent sales data.

4. Clean and declutter Decluttering comes hand-in-hand with moving house, so if you’re thinking seriously about selling there’s no better prompt to get rid of unwanted belongings. “When it comes to selling, less is more,” says Walther. “Because vendors may have lived in it for so long they want to show off what the home

has given to them, but it’s irrelevant to what a buyer wants.” 5. Improve and enhance When deciding how much money and energy to throw at your home before selling, Walther suggests asking yourself the question: “Why would people not want to buy my home?”

“You want to find out what the deal-breaker is,” he says. “Most vendors are on a budget, so they need to use their money effectively. Tackle the deal-breakers first and the rest comes second. “The walls and ceiling make up 90 per cent of what you’re looking at in a property, so if you repaint throughout it basically looks new,” Newell says.

Deer Park has made a roaring start to its chase for a record-extending seventh consecutive premiership in Western Region Football League division 1. The Lions erased any concerns over a potential bumpy start to the season by opening with two straight wins. With the Lions starting their pre-season later than most sides after going deep into the 2018 finals and having a host of top-line players unavailable with injuries in the opening fortnight, there was a feeling they could be susceptible to an early upset loss. Those fears were unfounded as Deer Park posted commanding wins over Caroline Springs and Sunshine in the first two rounds. â€œWe always have a late start to proceedings [after a premiership] and nothing has changed this year,â€? Lionsâ€™ coach Marc Bullen said. â€œWe counted that we had 23 unavailable through the seniors and the reserves. â€œTo win pretty comfortably, with the amount of players unavailable and the injuries weâ€™ve got at the moment, is a pleasing sign, but thereâ€™s a lot of work to do going forward.â€? There is no doubt that Deer Park was blessed with a favourable draw to open the season. In recent years, the Lions have had to lock horns with fellow flag contender Altona in round one, which has thrown up some thrilling encounters. Caroline Springs is an emerging team and Sunshine is finding its way under a new coach â€“ they are not comparable to Altona at this stage of their growth. â€œWeâ€™ve had Altona the last three years, which is always a challenge, so to have what youâ€™d call an easier draw at the start of the year has been a Godsend to us,â€? Bullen said.

â€œWeâ€™ve definitely got some huge challenges coming up after the Easter break, though. â€œThe competition has gone from strength to strength â€Ś having a look at some of the results and some of the video replays from the weekend, itâ€™s pleasing to see the strength of the football.â€? Deer Park will have some selection headaches in coming weeks. Premiership stars Jack Purton-Smith, Chris Stewart, Jackson Barling, Rodney Van Riet, James Wong and Jake McKenzie are on track to make their season debuts. Their absences might have been a blessing in disguise, as Bullen has been thrilled with the performances of young Lions who have been forced to take their games to another level. â€œThe best three players have been Sohrob Ismail, Mark Galea and Spiros Amarantidis,â€? he said. â€œTheyâ€™ve been super, their pre-seasons were outstanding and theyâ€™ve certainly developed as players. â€œOur ever-reliable superstar in Kwame McHarg has been pretty impressive, as well.â€? Much interest has surrounded the arrival of big name-recruit Jack Redpath and how the forward line would function with him and Jase Perkins in it. Redpath has kicked seven goals in two games, while Perkins has snared nine â€“ and so far it has clicked. Though Bullen admits the transition from the midfield to attack needs to get better. â€œWeâ€™re still a work in progress with our functionality forward of centre,â€? Bullen said. Most pleasing has been the teamâ€™s hunger to compete. There are no signs of a premiership hangover for the Lions. â€œThe hunt, the desire and the effort to get the footy off the opposition has been very good in the first couple of rounds,â€? Bullen said.

SPORT Sunshine Cowboys feel big pain from little misses Sunshine Cowboys have been their own worst enemy in the opening three rounds of the NRL Victoria second-grade season. The Cowboys are 0-3 – with two of those losses coming by a try or less. Cowboys half-back and playing president Mike Hurinui lamented the games that slipped through his team’s fingers. “The potential is there, but it’s the little things that are costing us at crucial times,” he said. “Some missed opportunities in attack have hurt us at vital times. “I don’t think we’re far away from turning the corner.” Sunshine’s failure to put the finishing touches on its plays is hurting it big time. The Cowboys are lacking composure at the back end of their sets, with their backs launching unnecessary passes early in the counts and their forwards having tunnel vision close to the line. Hurinui wants to see his forwards and backs connect better when they get near the try line. “The forwards are a little bit hungry close to the line,” he said. “They’re thinking they can take those last metres. We’ve got speed to burn

at the back … our backs are trying to score from so far out. “They have that urgency to score on that play instead of setting it up. “Sometimes these passes are 50-50 or coming early in the tackle count. “I really think if we learnt to hold our position a bit better, we’d end up walking the ball over the line rather than trying to run it from so far out.” The slight disconnect between Sunshine’s backs and forwards comes through a lack of experience playing together. A high turnover of players in the off season dictates that it will take time for the team to gel. Hurinui has been encouraged by the progress and can see a win coming around the corner. “We’ve got a lot of new players amongst our core this year, some in crucial positions,” Hurinui said. “It’s a little bit of patience needed, I guess. “We’re not far off gelling – we’re improving in some areas of the game and it’s just getting that first win to get that confidence.”

The standouts for Sunshine so far have been second rowers Swayn Rakete and Harley Keefe. No matter if the Cowboys are on defence or attack, these two are involved more often than not. “They’re making a big difference on both sides of the ruck,” Hurinui said. “It’s their work ethic in both areas. “They’re both willing to lead our line-up in defence and always there carting the ball forward in every set of six.” The return of full-back Lawrence Fernandes has made a difference for Sunshine. Fernandes is so good at retrieving the kicks and defending one-on-one. “It’s a crucial position because you know if they break the line, you’ve only got one bloke back there,” Hurinui said. “He’s pretty trustworthy and if it’s one-on-one he’ll make the tackle most times.” Sunshine, captain-coached by Rikki Mackey, will hit the road to face the Eastern Raptors in the fourth round on Saturday. Puli thrives on true grit By Lance Jenkinson If you put a challenge in the way of Werribee basketball rising star Maddi Puli, she will invariably find a way to overcome it. The first signs of Puli’s determination to conquer a pressure situation came when she was an under-14 player at the Werribee Devils. Puli missed the cut for the first team representative squad, but instead of putting that into the too hard basket, she used it as motivation. “That made me work harder to try and make the first team the next year,” she said. “What I like about basketball is the opportunity to develop and get better is always there.” Since that knock-back, Puli has made a rapid rise into multiple Victorian under-age state teams, Australian under-age representation and a development spot on a WNBL roster. Now 18, Puli has the basketball world at her feet. She is striving to the make the cut for the Australian Gems under-19 team that will play at the world championships later this year. Only recently, Puli was informed that she was accepted on a basketball scholarship to Texas Christian University, a division 1 basketball college. The four-year scholarship will allow Puli to mix her studies with hoop dreams. “It’ll be an unbelievable opportunity,” she said. “We’re in a really tough conference in the Big 12, so there’s some really tough games in there and it will be good to put myself up against some of the best in the country.” Before Puli jets off to the US in June, she will leave no stone unturned in her bid to make the Gems squad. Representing Australia is not new to Puli – she did so at under-17 level at the Oceania championships in 2017. “It’s honestly surreal putting on the green and gold,” she said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling going out and knowing that you’re representing the country for your age group.” Making the final cut for the Gems under-19s in a world championship year is a whole different kettle of fish. She was rejected for the Gems squad last year, but that will motivate her this time around. “It will be a tough camp, but I’m looking forward to it,” she said. A good indication of how much Puli wants to succeed in the sport is commitment to get to her training sessions with the Dandenong

Australia for the women’s league has helped me grow,” she said. Puli is the April nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Puli will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist her in achieving her sports goals.
