Thousands of people are expected to flock to Lake Caroline this weekend for an egg-cellent day of family fun. The annual Caroline Springs Easter Family Fun Day on Saturday will offer an afternoon of fun for everyone. Organised by INChurch Melbourne, the event is in its fifth year. INChurch Melbourne pastor Craig Maher said he and wife Melissa started the event after moving to Caroline Springs. “One of the things we noticed straight away was there weren’t any community events offering low-cost, family-friendly entertainment,” he said. About 5000 people attended last year’s event. Saturday’s fun will feature inflatable games for the kids, a petting zoo, face-painting and live music. There will also be a free show bag with an Easter egg for each child. Entry is free. Wrist bands for unlimited inflatable games can be purchased for children aged three to 15. Brimbank council says its position on electronic gaming machines remains clear, despite reports the council could seek gaming industry funding to help build the $58 million St Albans Leisure Centre. Brimbank suffers the biggest gaming losses in Victoria, with almost $140 million lost in 2017-2018. The council has repeatedly highlighted the suffering caused by gaming machines and in October last year called for the community to sign the petition Pokies play Brimbank. However after struggling to find funding for the much-talked about leisure centre, the council is now considering looking to the gambling industry. A report in The Age said a possible partnership with pokies operators was raised at a private gathering of councillors last month. The report stated that some present at the meeting say they are concerned such a partnership could give the pokies industry leverage over council policy. But they would not comment publicly, citing the council’s strict media code. In a statement last week, Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council’s position on electronic gaming machines was unchanged. “As the municipality that consistently experiences the highest EGM losses in Victoria, Brimbank council has been vocal and steadfast in our calls for gambling industry reform,” she said. “Brimbank continues to advocate for reform of the industry and the introduction of harm minimisation measures.” Cr Congreve said the council operated within financial constraints and was looking at a variety of options for funding. “Councillors recently discussed (during an informal meeting between councillors) potential opportunities to explore private sector investment in the much-needed St Albans Health and Wellbeing Hub. “This was a robust and broad discussion, exploring a number of options – including whether it would be appropriate for council to seek funds from agencies or companies that we do business with or even to try and claw back directly some of the gambling losses experienced by our community.” Cr Congreve said a number of organisations were floated as potential investors, including Community Clubs Victoria, a pokies lobby group.

Copper theft bill tops $1million By Tate Papworth Copper wire thefts have cost the Brimbank community more than $1 million in the past 18 months. Council’s infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said about 25 separate thefts had resulted in insurance claims “in the order of $1 million”. He said a spate off copper thefts from sporting and recreation reserves in Brimbank and across the west had hurt the community. “Not only do these thefts have a financial impact on council, but they also have a heavy

impact on the sports clubs that use these community facilities.” His comments come as four men were last week charged following a police investigation into the thefts. A 27-year-old Taylors Lakes man, a 33-year-old Taylors Lakes man, a 35-year-old Keilor Downs man and a 28-year-old Hillside

man were remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 16. All four have been charged with one count of theft after being found in possession of copper. Three of the four also face a second charge of theft for a separate incident. Police said they are reviewing all recent copper thefts looking at the similarities in offending. They said the thefts not only had a significant impact on sports clubs and schools, but also posed a safety risk because of the threat from live wiring left behind. Auction action a boost for Artspace The Sunshine Print Artspace is a year old – and to celebrate it is holding an auction of quality artworks. More than 50 works have been donated by well-known Victorian artists and will be auctioned at the Artspace on Saturday, May 4 from 7pm. Sunshine Print Artspace president Phillip Doggett-Williams said the auction was aimed at ensuring the centre’s future. “We have now been operating for over a year and we are pleased to be part of the artistic environment in Melbourne’s west,” he said. “We are becoming known across Melbourne. “Funds raised will enable us to develop our creative workshop programs, further equip and finance the studio spaces and consolidate our vision values and culture within the community.” The Artspace will hold a preview exhibition leading up to the auction. It will run from April 28. Mr Doggett-Williams said the auction works came from across the art spectrum and included painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. He hopes to raise $50,000 and is thankful of the artists who are supporting the cause. Music, food and drink offerings and a celebration of the arts space will unfold along with the auction. The Artspace is a place for emerging and professional artists, offering studio space, artistic support, workshops and training in areas such as silkscreen for textiles and paper, lithography, intaglio and relief printing. Last month, thieves stole copper cabling valued at more than $200,000 from sports facilities across Wyndham in 10 separate incidents. Police said investigations remain ongoing. No arrests over violent rampage in Sunshine Police are yet to lay any charges in relation to a violent crime spree which took place in Sunshine last month. Three people were taken to hospital in serious condition after a group of up to 15 youths went on a rampage in Kennedy Street late on Saturday, March 2. About 11.25pm a group of 10 to 15 males set upon a 35-year-old Braybrook man who was walking along Hertford Street, Sunshine. His pockets were searched and demands were made for his wallet, but the group was scared off by local residents. The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The group then made their way along Kennedy Street where police believe they carried out a series of vicious assaults. A 16-year-old was assaulted and taken to hospital with serious injuries and his 15-year-old friend, who came to his aid, was robbed and also assaulted. A 13-year-old Melton girl and a 13-year-old Melton boy were also confronted by the group on Kennedy Street, with the boy suffering minor injuries. The group also used a stick to assault a 14-year-old Corio girl who was searched for valuables and had her phone stolen. The investigation remains ongoing. New hard waste coming to Brimbank in July

Keilor Historical Society invites you to an Anzac Memorial Service to be held at the Keilor Cenotaph.

The new At Call Hard Waste Collection Service will replace the annual city-wide kerbside hard waste collection previously offered to residents.

A new way to get rid of hard waste is coming to Brimbank from 1 July 2019.

When: Thursday 25 April, 10.30-11.30am

Brimbank households will be able to book one no charge at call collection each financial year, to have up to four cubic metres of hard waste and two cubic metres of green waste collected from their properties, at a time of year convenient to them.

Where: Keilor Community Hub – Keilor Cenotaph, 704B Old Calder Highway, Keilor

Additional collections will be available at a cost to the resident.

Footage sought in death probe By Laura Michell Police are hoping dashcam footage or CCTV cameras can help with their investigation into the death of a Sydenham woman earlier this month. Vicki Ramadan, 77, was found dead in her Sydenham home on April 6. The last known sighting of her was about 9.45am on Monday, April 1, on Gourlay Road, Hillside. Homicide Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper revealed last week that Ms Ramadan was seen walking towards the Melton Highway.

“We’re appealing for anyone with information to come forward or anyone who was passing this area … to check their dashcam footage,” Detective Inspector Stamper said. “It would be too far for Vicki to walk from Gourlay Road to her home so we have to ask how did she get home? “What we are also interested in, is if anyone

can provide details of any suspicious activity in and or around Vicki’s Marlborough Way home and if anyone has seen Vicki since this last sighting until when her body was found nearly a week later.” Police said Ms Ramadan was often seen walking and was known to use public transport, in particular buses and taxis. They said Ms Ramadan frequented Watergardens Town Centre, where she was well-known by traders. “There are many questions still to be answered with this investigation, including a possible motive, so it’s crucial we hear from

the public. We’d like to provide the family with answers and find the person who has brutally taken Vicki’s life,” Detective Inspector Stamper said. Police are also investigating if her house was broken into or if she let someone she knew into her home. Detective Inspector Stamper said though Ms Ramadan was distant from her family, they were “very co-operative” with the investigation. “Obviously, they’re devastated and want some answers,” he said. Vandals strike statues Vandals have destroyed popular artworks at Antwerp Drive Reserve in Keilor Downs. The wooden totem poles featuring native animals were destroyed earlier this month. On its Facebook page, Brimbank council said the vandalism was appalling. “We’re disgusted and disappointed at the destruction of much-loved artworks at Antwerp Drive Reserve in Keilor Downs over the weekend,” the council said. “These beautiful sculptures were installed as part of a park upgrade just last year – so we share our community’s disappointment and dismay. “As well as damaging three sculptures, vandals left broken glass strewn across a picnic table. “Police have been informed and council will contact the artist to see if repairs can be made.” The nature-themed park at Antwerp Drive

Reserve was opened to the public in June last year. The $120,000 upgrade also included a new playground featuring climbing posts, a mound with a slide and climbing unit and new plant life. It’s not the first time vandals have hit a Brimbank park in recent months. The much-anticipated Sunvale Park in sunshine was attacked by vandals three times within a month of opening last year. In more recent times, two greens at the Keilor Public Golf Course were ripped up after vehicles were deliberately driven across the course. St Albans Secondary, Derrimut Primary and Marian College. Caroline Chisholm Catholic College was also a major winner, named as one of My School’s high achievers after it demonstrated substantially above average gains in reading. The college’s growth in reading between years

7 and 9 was 1.06 – double the statewide average for schools of a similar size (0.53). Caroline Chisholm deputy principal of learning and teaching Suzanne Farley said it was just reward for hard work. “The recognition from ACARA is wonderful and a great reflection of the hard work by so many, in particular our students, who continue to embrace our reading program,” she said. “The outstanding outcomes and recognition from ACARA is a testament to the commitment the college has put into these programs and partnerships.”

Ms Farley said the reading program was led by the college’s teacher librarians and was aimed at monitoring and challenging students to read a variety of texts appropriate to their reading level. “Year 7 students visit the library once a week and year 8 and 9 students once a fortnight as part of the English curriculum,” she said. “A key part of our reading program is the reading conferences, where students discuss what they are reading.” To see how your school rated, visit: myschool. edu.au

Boom gates are back A final twist has been added to the Melton Highway level crossing removal. Kyneton sculptor Jason Waterhouse has recreated the original boom gates in a sculpture installed under the new rail bridge. The art piece, entitled Levelled Crossing Crossing, reuses the boom gates removed from the former Melton Highway level crossing, and ties them together in a knot. Waterhouse said he wanted the boom gates to remain true to their function. “My practice deals with re-imagining real objects,” he said. “And I thought, isn’t it hilarious that all this work goes into removing these boom gates. “I was interested in the ironic idea of putting back the boom gates to the site after all the effort … which is what I’ve done. “I just thought of the function of the boom gate – the opening and letting people through.” Waterhouse’s concept was chosen by Melton

The sculptor installed the artwork in December last year under the eastern side of the six-lane bridge. “The work provides viewers and commuters with a fun, engaging and slightly surreal experience as they pass through the space and encounter the sculpture,” Waterhouse said. “Levelled Levelled Crossing is a playful take on the rail and road intersection history of the site and its recent urban development.” Jessica Micallef

Leap of faith pays off “It’s a design that can be understood in many cultures without requiring too much thought,” he said. It’s not the first time Ramos’ work has been recognised. He won the $5000 Fiona Myer National Grant after his teachers at VU Polytechnic encouraged him to enter a panoramic series of five acrylic paintings of Japan’s Mount Fuji last year. Two years ago, Victoria University Polytechnic graduate Ronald Ramos swapped his career as an IT specialist to become a visual artist. At 36, the late-blooming St Albans artist said it wasn’t easy to throw in a highly-paid role for a chance to uncover a buried creative passion. However, his decision has paid off – Ramos has earned a series of awards, accolades and prizes along the way. Recently he won the inaugural VU – Western Bulldogs ‘design a harmony-themed footy jumper’ competition. He presented the jumper to Bulldogs’ players at the Unity Cup, a full day of round-robin matches featuring amateur players supported by AFL teams earlier this month. The winning work is a powerful design of red and white hands gripping wrists on a Bulldogs-blue background, symbolising strength and unity. Ramos said simplicity was the key.

When residents bought into the newly developed Cairnlea area just over a decade ago, they thought they were buying properties with picturesque water views. But these days the man-made lakes are hardly flowing – dry weather has meant the lakes are rapidly drying up. Joe Azzopardi bought into the area when it was established and said promises were made to keep the lake topped up. “VicUrban … told us the lakes would be topped up by storm water, but in the event of drought, mains are in place,” he said. “About 10 years ago we had a drought and someone came down, turned the tap on and it was topped up. The valve is there, anyone can see it.” Mr Azzopardi said he can hear the mains at the lake go on each morning. “The water pressure in my house drops significantly for about an hour every morning, but the water isn’t going into the lake,” he said “We suspect it’s being used to water sports ovals.” Michael Thandi, also a resident by the lake, said a lack of maintenance of the lakes is an ongoing problem. “When I first bought I was told I was paying more in rates for maintenance costs because I have a water-facing property. If that is the case I’d like to see them maintain the lake, because it clearly is not happening at the moment.” Residents say they were made promises that haven’t been kept. However Brimbank council’s chief strategist financial and organisational excellence Shane Marr said only storm water is used for the lakes. “It is not sustainable to fill the lake with drinking water [mains water],” he said.

“Water bodies in the Cairnlea area, including Cairnlea Lake and Wetlands, Shearwater Meadow, Waterfield Park and Station Waters are filled by storm water [rain water]. “In periods of low rainfall, as has been the case in the last three months, the level of the water bodies will drop to a low point …[but] the water bodies will be recharged with autumn

and winter rains as has occurred in previous years.” Mr Marr also denied claims the residents were paying higher rates for water-facing properties. He said all residential property rates are calculated based on the same rate in the dollar. Mr Marr said residents having issues with mains water should contact their water utility.

Family violence scourge of west By Alesha Capone Police have attended 9141 family violence incidents in the west during a 12-month period, with Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton recording the highest numbers of offences. Between July, 2017, and June last year, Victoria Police recorded 2742 family violence offences in Wyndham, 2565 in Brimbank, 2065 in Melton, 971 in Hobsons Bay and 798 in Maribyrnong.

Wyndham and Brimbank recorded the sixth and seventh highest numbers of family violence incidents in Victoria in the year to June last year, while Melton placed 10th on the list. Between July, 2017, and June last year,

Casey recorded the highest number of family violence incidents in the state with 4733 offences, followed by Greater Geelong with 3319, Whittlesea with 3057, Hume with 3040 and Frankston with 2718. Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Lawrence, from the Westgate Family Violence Investigation Unit, said: “The rapidly growing population in the area of Wyndham certainly contributes significantly to the high recording of family violence incidents in the area. “Local police have progressively specialised our response to family violence in recognition of the risk and complexity that these incidents pose.” He said that across the state, reports of family violence had gradually increased over time. “Sadly, though, we continue to see unacceptable numbers of women and children who are not safe in their own homes,” he said. “We know that family violence takes many forms – it’s not just about physical violence. If you feel at risk of family violence or believe that someone you know is, seek help from police or a support service such as Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre (1800 015 188).

Max Belfrage’s marching days might be over, but the World War II veteran’s feisty spirit still shines brightly. Health problems have brought an end to the 85-year-old’s Anzac Day march through the city, a tradition which he said began with a few “boozed-up” reunions among young men barely out of their teens.

Women ready to tee off The Keilor Golf Club is calling on local women to hit the green. In a bid to raise its numbers, the club has begun a number of female-friendly initiatives. Keilor Golf Club coach Scott Wearne said recent come and try days had been a major success. “We had two come and try days recently where we encouraged women to come out and give the sport a go,” he said. “It was really well attended with an average of about 25 people turning up over both days.” Following the strong turnout, Mr Wearne said the club has expanded its offering. “I’ll be holding a series of clinics just after Easter,” he said. “They’ll go for five weeks on a Tuesday and Thursday morning and

Australia’s property markets are changing and in most capital cities the long path to purchase has become that little bit shorter. That’s news that will be welcomed by would-be first-home buyers faced with the difficult financial hurdle of saving a lump sum deposit amid rising living costs and low wages growth. With buyer urgency having largely dissipated in most cities, prospective first-home buyers can focus on building a savings plan to gain entry into previously competitive markets. The Domain First-Home Buyers Report identifies Melbourne areas that offer the lowest entry prices and quickest paths to purchase – go to domain.com.au for full breakdown of all Australian capitals. Melbourne is the second-most expensive city to purchase an entry level home and has the second-longest path to purchase, behind Sydney. Even though it remains a challenging market, the tide appears to have turned in favour of first-home buyers. Prospective first-home buyers will be saving for five years and nine months to achieve an entry-level house deposit and four years for an entry-level unit, shaving off two months compared to this time last year. Softer housing market conditions have more broadly filtered down across the market. Melbourne has one of the largest differences between property types among capitals, with an entry-price differential of $173,000. It takes an additional 21 months to save for an entry-level house instead of a unit. The percentage difference between entry house and unit prices is

at an all-time high, with high levels of development completions serving to contain unit prices relative to houses. Prospective buyers seeking quicker market access will need to look to the city’s edge. The west offers the

shortest path to purchase, along with the north-west. Buyers need to look towards Melton-Bacchus Marsh, Wyndham or Sunbury, which have the shortest saving time for entry-level houses at four years and six months, four years and 11 months

and four years and 10 months respectively. For buyers seeking affordable housing closer to the CBD, the suburbs of Essendon and Maribyrnong have a savings time of three years and seven months for a unit.

SPORT Bombers bounce back – but there’s still work to do

After a shocking opening round derailment in which it conceded 169 points in a 79-point loss to Tarneit, Braybrook appears to be back on track. The Bombers notched up their first Western Region Football League division 3 victory on Saturday. They had to work hard for a 36-point victory over Wyndham Suns on the road at Goddard Street Reserve. While obviously pleased to get into the winners’ circle, Bombers’ coach Jason Hamilton stopped short of saying his team is officially back. “I’m still not entirely happy,” he said. “We’ll take the four points though, that’s for sure.” The Bombers were not disciplined to their structures and might have been punished on another day. Having gone out on a limb and stated that a grand final appearance was a pass mark, the Bombers have big expectations.

“We weren’t up to our normal silky self again,” Hamilton said. “We were a bit undisciplined in some areas of the game.” But Hamilton has a strong belief in Braybrook’s list this season. He would not make such big statements about the Bombers’ ability to be contenders if not. “We need to put in some hard work and just have to iron out a few little issues, but I’m still really positive,” Hamilton said. “At lot of people had a go at us when we said our goal for the year is to make the grand final, but we’re still on track. “I’m pretty confident we can play a big part at the end of the year.” There were some positive signs in the win over Wyndham. Forward Paul Cutajar-Milosev was back to his imposing best with seven goals. “His goals were very telling in the end,” Hamilton said.

Cobras rue costly errors By Lance Jenkinson Who’d be a coach? Andrew Bryson has experienced the peaks and troughs of coaching in his first two weeks in charge of Albanvale in Western Region Football League division 3. After the season opener, the Cobras were being hailed as flag contenders. But they were knocked down a peg by surprise packet Glen Orden in a 47-point loss in their home opener at Robert Bruce Oval on Saturday. Bryson was disappointed for the expectant home crowd. “We wanted a really strong win at home with all the hard work that has been done over the pre-season,” he said. “To Glen Orden’s credit, they came to play, they were really switched on early and we were a bit too loose with our structures and probably didn’t respect them the way that we should’ve.” After a nip-and-tuck first quarter in which both sides kicked two goals, Glen Orden turned up the heat with a six-goals-to-nil second quarter. Albanvale was forced into errors by the Hawks, who feasted on their turnovers to get to a big 36-point half-time lead. “The second quarter, we just weren’t able to get the footy in our hands enough,” Bryson said. “When we did, we made poor decisions.” Albanvale offered a response after half-time, but could not make a dent in the margin. The Cobras had sustained periods of momentum, but fell short of doing damage on the scoreboard. “We felt that we were in it for the most part of that third quarter, but we just weren’t able to get the score on the board,” Bryson said. Not having key forward Nathan Black available after quarter-time unbalanced Albanvale. Black, the prized off-season signing who kicked 10 goals in the thrashing of Sunshine Heights in round one, succumbed to his nagging achilles issue. “His achilles was playing up last week and it flared up again,” Bryson said. “We’re confident our forward six is good enough that if it’s not him kicking those goals, it will be someone else. “Last week was really good – we had seven different goalkickers. But coming into the forward half this week, we made poor decisions when we had the ball through the middle of the ground, which put pressure on our forwards.” Ricky Cameron and David Azzopardi fought the game out well for Albanvale. 46 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 16, 2019

Both snared two goals while splitting time between midfield and forward. Liam Ryan was impressive across half-back and Kym Taylor provided home fans with the highlight of the day – a mark Bryson described as a “screamer”. In division 1, Caroline Springs opened its account with a 50-point win over Point Cook.

The pain goes on for Albion. After a 188-point round one loss to Werribee Districts, the Cats backed it up with a 166-point thrashing from Spotswood. Deer Park made it two-from-two in a 69-point win over Sunshine, while St Albans was pipped by a point by Hoppers Crossing.

Defenders Aidan O’Rafferty and David May came up big when Wyndham had a roll on. “There were a lot of other blokes who were handy contributors, but those three stood out,” Hamilton said. Nathan Smith was a strong finisher for Braybrook with four goals. He has kicked nine goals in two games. Braybrook will host consecutive blockbuster games in the next two weeks. On Good Friday, it will face a rejuvenated Laverton at Pennell Reserve, while at the same venue on Anzac Day, Albanvale will pay it a visit. “It’s a great honour to play on Good Friday and Anzac Day,” Hamilton said. “It doesn’t happen in local footy too much so we’re looking forward to it. “I’m sure we’ll have a lot of other teams coming down to have a look. “It should be a good crowd for both games.” Lance Jenkinson

Devils rebound, record big win After finishing last season with one win and the wooden spoon, Keilor Park has been hellbent on making 2019 the season that it rises up the Essendon District Football League women’s division 1 ladder. The Devils cut short their end-of-season holidays, returning to the training track just weeks after the completion of last season. If Saturday’s huge season-opening win is any indication, that ambitious pre-season has been just what the Devils needed. Keilor Park enjoyed a resounding 81-point win over Greenvale away at Greenvale Recreation Reserve. The Devils were on fire in the first half, kicking 8.8 and holding the Jets scoreless. They completed the rout with a five-goals-to-two second half. Keilor Park was led by three goals each from Caitlyn Simon and Samantha German. Best-on-ground Meghan Patrick, Sara Imela and Renee Szabo snared two goals apiece for the Devils. Keilor Park will be looking to make it two in a row when it faces Aberfeldie after Easter. In women’s premier, Burnside Heights had a shut-out victory over Strathmore, winning 119 to zip. The Bears were in total control from start to finish as they banged on 17 goals to nil. Brooke McKinley was ever present in attack, finishing with seven goals, while Kayla Ravanello kicked five. Sina Mason capped a best-afield game for the Bears with a goal. Keilor could only manage two goals in a 48-point loss to Aberfeldie, while Hillside could only muster five behinds in a 69-point defeat to Westmeadows. In men’s division 2, Burnside Heights held on for a 20-point win over Moonee Valley at Ormond Park. The Bears appeared to be coasting to victory with a 42-point three-quarter time lead, but the Valleys kicked four of the five goals in the last quarter to make it an interesting finish. Young Georgies begin to mature with solid win

What a stark difference a week made for Caroline Springs George Cross in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 soccer. The Georgies began the round in last place on the ladder after a draw and two losses in the first three rounds, but a breakthrough 3-1 win over Yarraville Glory at McIvor Reserve on Saturday has catapulted them up five places into seventh. This is a young and developing Georgies team, so its performances have been predictably inconsistent. But coach Corey Smith was encouraged enough by the first 270 minutes of the season to go into the Glory game with confidence. “Obviously, we haven’t had a great start results-wise and it was good to get the first win out of the way,” Smith said. “I honestly believe that win has been coming. Our performances have been deserving of more points, but today was a performance for 90 minutes.”

The Georgies have a lot of talent, but the squad’s average age is 22. “Slowly each week we’re working on something different and things that may have come up,” Smith said. “Really, it’s about giving the players confidence in what we’re trying to do. “When they’re challenged, can they make decisions on the pitch to overcome those challenges?” The most pleasing aspect of the win was that the Georgies were challenged by Yarraville in the second half and had all the answers. After Caroline Springs went 2-0 up and was seemingly in control, the Glory scored after half-time and had all the momentum for about 15 minutes. “That goal gave them a bit of a boost and for a period there they had the ascendancy,” Smith said. “What we were able to do today is kill off their momentum and go back at them.

“That’s probably the area we’ve been lacking the last couple of weeks … an ability to believe in what you’re doing at any stage of the game.” The calming effect that midfielders Kobe Kemp, Liam Harding and Daniel Slovacek had on Caroline Springs was profound. Slovacek found the back of the net for the Georgies, along with the other goalscorers, Nelson Salvatore and Yuji Kin. A highlight for Smith was the debut of Alex Dimond. Having turned 17 four days earlier, Dimond got the perfect birthday present from Smith when he was called into the starting line-up. The right back impressed in his first outing. “He started the game a little bit shaky like any kid that age would, but then he grew into the game,” Smith said. Time not on their side By Lance Jenkinson St Albans Saints coach Kruni Razov was asking the referees “where did the mystery two minutes of stoppage time come from?” The Saints were leading Werribee City by a goal in a tightly contested National Premier League 2 west game at Galvin Park on Saturday when the assistant referee put four minutes up on the board for second half stoppage time. Play went for an extra two minutes on top of the allotted four and it allowed Werribee City to find an equalising goal to make it a 1-1 game. Razov conceded the top-of-the-ladder game deserved to be a draw, but he felt his side was hard done by with the extra two minutes added. “It was a fair result,” Razov said. “It’s just a little bit heart wrenching when you score in the 89th minute and you concede in the 96th. “When four minutes comes up on the board, it’s supposed to be four minutes. “Someone went down for about 20 or 30 seconds in that extra time, so even with the extra 30 seconds, it shouldn’t have gone close to 96 minutes.

“It’s a lottery, but what can you do?” With both sides sharing the spoils, there is no change at the top of the table. Werribee City is in first place on goal difference. Razov was content to return home with a point in the bag. “I wouldn’t say it was a dull affair, but no one wanted to give anyone a bit of leeway,” he said. “We both tried to play, we both had real good chances, so, in the end, a point, we’ll take it.” The St Albans players were not as calm about the result as Razov. Razov said they were “a little bit annoyed with themselves”. Adam Hodor, who put the Saints ahead late in regulation time with a superb left-foot strike from outside the box, took the draw the hardest. His own brother Shaun, who plays for Werribee City, cancelled out his goal and rescued a point for the home side with a similarly impressive strike. “Adam just kept saying ‘my brother hasn’t scored a goal in three years’,” Razov said. “He wasn’t happy about it.” St Albans is the top-ranked attacking team in the competition with 24 goals after nine

rounds, but the defence earned them a point at Werribee City. The Saints backs of Jordan Wilkes, Anthony Katiforis, Ben Shaper and David Simms were rock solid most of the game. Razov praised the work of Saints goalkeeper Rob Santilli, along with Werribee City custodian Christian Rossi at the other end. “They pulled off two or three really good saves each and kept their sides in the game,” Razov said. St Albans will face an enormous task in the fourth round of the FFA Cup when they face top-tier NPL side Port Melbourne Sharks on J.L. Murphy Reserve on Saturday night. In the NPL, Melbourne Knights shone brightest under the Friday night lights with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Pascoe Vale at C.B. Smith Reserve. The Knights trailed for 58 minutes after Nicholas Georgopoulos put the Vales in front, but found three goals in 22 minutes through Hamish Watson, Atilla Ofli and Gian Albano. The Knights are back in action on Wednesday, taking on Mooroolbark in the FFA Cup at Knights Stadium.

Keilor Thunder is making noise in the Big V basketball men’s state championship. Back-to-back wins have boosted the Thunder up to third spot on the ladder with a 5-2 record after seven games. On their home court at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday, the Thunder enjoyed a 99-83 win over Chelsea Gulls. Big second and third quarters, in which the Thunder out-scored the visitors 51-32, proved the difference in the game. Import Mike Anderson was on fire for the Thunder with 40 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals. B.J. Symons continued his hot shooting off the bench with 17 points, while Chris Kaba (14), Matt Spencer (13) and Daniaell Herbert (13) all hit double figures. In the women’s state championship, Keilor Thunder took to the road to dismantle the Warrnambool Mermaids by 50 points The Thunder’s 99-49 win was led by Erin Bollman, with 25 points and nine rebounds, and Aneta Bandilovski, with 18 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Space aplenty in the new Tiguan By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring

Midway through 2018 Volkswagen introduced the seven-seat Tiguan Allspace. Though based on the five-seat Tiguan the new Allspace is a significantly longer vehicle. It has more overall length, a longer wheelbase and 106mm more rear overhang. All of which allows for the addition of two seats in a third row but with the same width as the five-seater. Cleverly, it still has a boot capacity of 230 litres with all the seats in use. With the third row seats folded down the boot goes up a very useful 700 litres. Interestingly, the Allspace is the only seven-seater in the Volkswagen SUV range as the larger Touareg is still a five-seater. Despite the impressively low prices – from $45,490 to $60,427 – the equipment levels are high in both models: three-zone climate-control air conditioning, keyless entry and start as well as an electronic tailgate. There is even a rechargeable torch in luggage area. Highline adds electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, heated front and second row two outer seats and Vienna leather appointed upholstery. Our test Tiguan Allspace for the past week was the top of the range model, the R-line, which adds 20-inch Suzuka alloy wheels, R-Line bumpers and side sills, a black rear spoiler, aluminium scuff plates, black Vienna leather seats, black headline, steering wheel with paddles, brushed stainless-steel pedals.

Audio entertainment in our test vehicle was by way of the optional Dynaudio Excite premium sound system and was a delight to listen to. There are only three USB ports, we reckon an extra couple would make more sense in a vehicle designed for multiple kid carting.

Safety

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace has been given a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The second row seats have three top tether points and IsoFix mounts in the outboard positions. Driver assist features include city autonomous emergency braking, multi-collision braking, pedestrian monitoring, lane assist, park assist, a rear view camera and front and rear sensors. To these safety features, the Allspace Highline adds side assist, rear traffic alert and

The front and middle rows have ample legroom and headroom, but the rear pair of seats are best left for preteen kids. The engine is responsive, with minimal turbo lag and real willingness to get up and go when you want to. Fuel consumption was typically in the six to eight litres per hundred kilometres range on motorways and easy paced country roads. If you do get stuck into it usage is likely to climb dramatically into the 10 to 13 litres range. On the road, comfort is good, with the typical solid feel we’ve admired in Volkswagens for many decades. Steering feel is good, perhaps a little lighter than some would like in a semi-performance vehicle like this, but we were happy with it.

Summing up

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace R-line is an attractive, comfortable people mover with a hint of sportiness in its makeup. The R-Line costs a fair bit more than the more basic versions, but if you can justify the extra bucks, it’s worth it.

It will be the first Ford PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric) model offered in this country and indicates Ford is serious about meeting future owners needs. Escape hybrid will be powered by 2.5-litre, four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, electric motor and generator, and 14.4kWh lithium-ion battery to produce up to 165kW of power. Ford says it will have a fully-electric driving range in excess of 50 kilometres. It seems likely that it will also be sold here with conventional engines, however Ford Australia is keeping details secret at this early stage. All-new Ford Escape is slightly larger than the model it will replace and carries many of the same styling themes, particularly in the grille and tail. The side view carries a sporty look with an upswept D-pillar and a neat tail spoiler. New Escape is 44mm wider and 89mm longer than the outgoing model, while the wheelbase has increased by 20mm. Inside, it has 43mm additional shoulder room and 57mm more hip room in the front seats. Rear passengers will share 20mm more shoulder room and 36mm more hip room. Though itâ€™s 20mm lower overall, the all-new Escape provides 13mm more headroom over the front seats. Impressively, thereâ€™s 35mm additional headroom in the rear seats. Versatility is excellent as the entire second row of seats can be moved forward or backwards to juggle between legroom and boot space. The new platform, tagged as C2, means Focus will be up to 90kg lighter.
