Vicinity Centres confirmed that management is planning to develop the ageing mall and evolve with the suburb. “Vicinity Centres, owners of Sunshine Marketplace are continuing to move forward with long-term master planning for redevelopment of the centre,” a spokesperson for the company said. “The opportunity exists to ensure the centre reflects the changing needs of the local community and federal and state government’s investment into the Melbourne Airport Rail Link, including the proposed super hub at Sunshine.

Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said the redevelopment was a long-time coming. “Sunshine Marketplace is well-established and an important part of the Sunshine community,” he said. “The community has quietly and patiently longed for the marketplace to evolve and lift. “The mixed-use makeover appears to be market-driven, responding to future demands and is timely, with the state and federal government stepping up plans for an airport rail link through Sunshine. “I am quietly excited about the redevelopment as it has the potential to result in social and economic benefit to the local community through employment, expenditure, attracting new investment to the area, creating linkages with tourism and a physical regeneration of out-dated areas.” The marketplace celebrated its 20th birthday last year. It has undergone just one major redevelopment in 20 years.

Facelift for Errington Reserve By Tate Papworth St Albans’ Errington Reserve is set for a $6.2 million upgrade. Construction of a sports and community pavilion ($4.3 million) and new tennis courts ($1.9 million) are expected to begin soon, after the council awarded contracts for the projects at last month’s meeting. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the upgrades complement recent improvements to the area.

“We’ve made a lot of improvements to the popular Errington Reserve over recent years, including the construction of the St Albans Community Centre and Bowery Theatre to replace the old Errington Community Centre; and the development of Alice’s Playspace community park,” Cr Congreve said. “The upgrade of connecting Princess Street is also currently under way and is expected to be completed soon. “We look forward to delivering this new sports and community pavilion and

tennis courts at Errington Reserve,” she said. An officer’s report presented at the meeting described the current pavilion at Errington Reserve as dilapidated and not fit for use. The old pavilion and the adjoining unused meals on wheels facility will be demolished to make way for the new pavilion which will be used by the tennis club. The current tennis club courts and pavilion will be replaced with three new synthetic grass courts, and one multi-use hard court. LED lighting will be added in another

The Keilor Park Devils hope to expand their female football stocks with the introduction of new purpose-built changerooms. Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll last week announced that the state government would support the construction of female-friendly facilities at the club with $250,000 from its Female-Friendly Facilities Fund. Mr Carroll said the new rooms will make the world of difference as female involvement in local sports continues to grow. “More women than ever before are signing up for local sports teams – but many clubs like the Devils are being held back by outdated or non-existent facilities,” he said. “We’re proud to be making sport accessible to everyone. “These new changerooms are game-changing. Devils women and girls can say goodbye to changing in facilities that aren’t fit for purpose, and focus on playing the sport they love.” Keilor Park’s changerooms, umpires’ room and social toilets will be reconfigured and upgraded as part of the project, giving women and girls better facilities. It is hoped the upgrade will encourage more women to get involved in the club. Since 2014, more than $630 million has been invested in community sport and recreation facilities across Victoria as part of the Female-Friendly Facilities Fund.

The Sunshine RSL needs volunteers to help with this year’s Anzac Appeal. Sunshine RSL president Gary Collins said volunteer numbers have dwindled in recent years and more hands were needed. “Our numbers have fallen away and we haven’t really had volunteers come forward that much,” he said. “In previous years we’ve raised $10,000-$12,000, which we’d like to do again.” Mr Collins said volunteer numbers have dictated where badges will be sold. “We’ll focus on Bunnings, the Marketplace and Brimbank Central,” he said. “We’re letting a lot of areas go because we can’t man them, so the more volunteers we can get, the better.” The RSL is calling on anyone who can spare a minimum of a half day to sell badges. “We need volunteers mainly to man tables at shops and, given our numbers, we’d ideally like a minimum of half day commitment,” said Mr Collins. He said calls for more support online had not yielded the results the RSL had hoped for. “We put a few posts up online through channels like Facebook, but we’ve only had about three or four people put their hand up. “That’s three more than last year, which is great, but we’d ideally like a few more.” The appeal will run from Monday, April 8 to Wednesday, April 24. Green light for station upgrade By Tate Papworth The push to make Watergardens station more accessible has been given a major lift. The state government has committed $16.3 million (to be split with Essendon station) to make the station more accessible for people living with a disability. A solitary lift is currently the only way people with disabilities, elderly people, or people who have a child in a pram can gain easy access to the platform. When the lift is out of order, there is no easy

point of access for those wanting to catch a train. However money secured in the 2018-19 state budget will be used to increase the number of lifts at the station to six. Improved lighting and CCTV coverage will also be included in the upgrade. The new lifts will be bigger, for easier access for passengers using a mobility device and will have semi-transparent walls for improved safety. They will also include separate power sources to ensure continuous operation and battery

power back-up so users won’t be trapped in a blackout. Public Transport Victoria also investigated installing a ramp, however the six-metre high concourse meant passengers would have to travel 105 metres to reach the platforms. The upgrades will be welcome news to residents who have been calling for better access for years. An online petition calling for a ramp to be installed at the station has gathered 750 signatures. Member for Sydenham Natalie Hutchins

said she shared the community’s concerns and welcomed the funding. “I’m supportive of the community petitioning all tiers of government,” she said. “I have met with local residents who have mobility restrictions, residents who are older, carers and parents with young kids, who want to see the accessibility of Watergardens station improved and I share that goal with them. “That’s why it’s great that the Andrews Labor government committed funding in the 2018-19 Victorian government budget.” Construction is expected to begin in 2020.

Sydenham’s quiet place A new facility to learn, read and meet has been officially opened at the Sydenham library. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve and Member for Sydenham Natalie Hutchins were on hand to open the library’s new $30,000 programs room last week, which will act as a multi-purpose space. Cr Congreve said it was a fitting upgrade given the role libraries play in the community. “Ten per cent of Brimbank’s population use a library weekly,” she said. “Our libraries foster a culture of reading and learning throughout life and contribute to improving educational, social and health outcomes to our community.” She said Brimbank’s libraries offer a range of services to a large number of people. “The public library you walk into today is very different to the library you would’ve walked into 10 years ago,” she said. “We have computer and study facilities,

innovative programing and we’re open very long hours. “Our online services are also gaining popularity … 65,000 people visit our online library every month.” She said the new programs room would complement the Sydenham libraries offerings. “The upgrade of this space provides the library with an enclosed room for quiet studying and it also has the ability to double as a programs space.” Ms Hutchins echoed Cr Congreve’s sentiments. “For many who visit this library regularly, you’ll see there are a lot of university and high school students that need a space to study and when they’re not at the computers, they’re looking for a quiet space,” said Ms Hutchins. “This is what this area is going to provide.” Tate Papworth

A program encouraging the west’s multicultural community to band together in environmental projects has been launched. The Cross-Cultural Volunteer Program – run by Melbourne Airport and Conservation Volunteers Australia was launched last month and will continue for three years. It will run once a month at Organ Pipes National Park, where participants will assist in environmental restoration activities ranging from plant revegetation and maintenance of new plantings to monitoring animal populations and water qualities. Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said the program was a unique way for the airport to support the community. “Melbourne Airport operates in one of the

most culturally diverse regions in the nation, so we are pleased to partner with Conservation Volunteers Australia to help local migrants and refugees build their social network, while improving language skills,” Mr Strambi said. Rents in the west head north By Jim Malo Rents in some western suburbs have increased at the same rate as some of the city’s most prestigious suburbs over the past year, sparking alarm from advocates who are warning of increased rental stress among families. Median weekly rents increased by 15 per cent over the past year in Keilor and 5 per cent in Broadmeadows and Roxburgh Park. Rents over the same period in Malvern have increased by 7.6 per cent and by 7.5 per cent in Albert Park and Middle Park.

Inner-city rents, on the other hand, have declined the most amid Melbourne’s cooling house prices, new Department of Health and Human Services figures show. Over the past five years, traditional affordability bastions of Werribee and Hoppers Crossing have experienced rent increases of more than 20 per cent. That growth in prices is behind only Thornbury and Armadale, the department’s December 2018 Rental Report shows. Keilor’s 15 per cent growth over the past year was particularly stark given its five-year

growth from 2013 to 2018 of 21.7 per cent was the sixth highest across the city. Tenants Victoria policy officer Natalie Rutherford said the sharp rise in rents in fringe areas increased the levels of housing stress experienced by vulnerable families. “A family with two children receiving Newstart, an income of $793, and renting a three-bedroom house in Keilor pays more than 44 per cent of their income just to put a roof over their heads,” she said. “Affordable private housing is hard to find, badly maintained, and expensive to heat.”

A generational change was occurring in Keilor, leading to bigger properties being rented out for higher prices, Brad Teal director Brad Teal said. “It’s the end of the generational cycles where people are moving out of homes and putting them on the rental market for the first time,” he said. “There are rental opportunities on big blocks that have a potential future of being knocked down and rebuilt.” – Domain

Testing times a big help A number of Brimbank medical centres are taking part in a trial aimed at finding the most effective strategies for optimising cervical screening in HPV (human papillomavirus)vaccinated women. The trial, the largest clinical trial ever to be conducted in Australia, is being undertaken at 10 locations around the municipality. While many Brimbank women are already supporting the trial, the VCS Foundation is calling for even more support. It says it needs 8000 more Australian women aged 25 to 38 to participate in the trial to help it understand the best way to refine HPV testing, especially in women who have been offered HPV vaccination. Keilor Village Medical practice manager Craig Rayner said he jumped at the chance to help. “VCS sent out the feelers to see if we were interested,” he said. “Our principal practitioner

here has a big interest in women’s health and cervical screening, so that was a big factor. “We have over 1800 patients at the clinic at the moment … with new GPs coming on board, we thought it was a great way to extend our cervical screening.” VCS Foundation executive director Marion Saville said the trial was an important step in eliminating the disease. “HPV testing is a better way to find lesions that otherwise may become cancers, but we are also using the trial to identify the best way to refine the testing to avoid sending too many healthy women for further tests (false positive tests),” she said. “Understanding how we can further improve screening in women … is an important step towards eliminating this disease.” Details: compasstrial.org.au Tate Papworth

Sunshine all set for a revival By Tate Papworth A development plan for a site in Anderson Road has been described as a “significant piece of infrastructure for Sunshine”. The plans, to create a “highly accessible medium density residential community” at 112-116 Anderson Road, were presented to Brimbank council last month. The site is 400 metres away from the Sunshine railway station, which is set to be the centrepiece of the airport rail link and Sunshine super hub, and borders the H.V.

McKay Memorial Gardens. An estimated 350 dwellings has been proposed, including 265 apartments (mostly one and two bedrooms), and 85 townhouses, which will range from two, three and four bedrooms. Councillor Bruce Lancashire said it was a significant piece of infrastructure for Sunshine. “We have taken a keen interest in this proposal to convert the KG Chaplin Reserve to a premiere residential development,” he said. “This site is significant for many reasons including its proximity to the Sunshine

shopping centre and its proximity to what will become the Sunshine super hub – giving its residents an amazing level of public transport. “The articulated built form of this development will provide for a wide variety of family types,” he said. He said the use of rear-loading garaging access from the laneways would reduce the impact of garages on streetscapes. One point of contention had been the impact the development may have on the iconic H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens. However, Cr Lancashire said that had been

taken into consideration. “Development along the … garden will be limited to two-three storeys, which is appropriate for fronting such a sensitive frontage to a park. The remainder of the site will potentially accommodate nine-storey development.” Cr Sam David said he believed the development would benefit the gardens. “More safety and security and everything that goes with it. We welcome the idea,” he said. The development plan was approved, subject to the inclusion of changes specified by council officers.

Forging new connections An organisation which supports young people in schools is calling for volunteers. EdConnect, a not-for-profit organisation, aims to help young people who are at-risk of becoming disengaged at school. Under the program, volunteers work with students, providing them with support for both education success and wellbeing. The program has run in Victoria for the past 14 years and is now placing a focus on Caroline Springs. EdConnect liaison officer Rhonda Velkovski said it was a great way for older generations to pass on some wisdom. “Sixty three per cent of our volunteers are over 55 years of age,” she said. “We are harnessing the wisdom and skills of elder generations and communities are becoming enriched and young people are thriving.” She said the results speak for themselves.

“All of our schools have reported the improvement of student self-esteem and confidence,” she said. “While 91 per cent of at-risk students have improved literacy and 87 per cent of students have improved in numeracy.” In Caroline Springs, volunteers help and support students in a homework club between 3-4pm Wednesdays and/or Thursdays weekly. The program has recently placed a volunteer at Taylors Lakes Secondary College as part of its focus on the west. Volunteers undergo a thorough recruitment and screening process, as well as a comprehensive training program to ensure they have the skills and ability to work with primary or secondary school students. MFB praises fire response times By Laura Michell Response times are improving at most of Brimbank’s fire stations, with brigades responding to 90 per cent of code one emergencies in less than eight minutes. Latest response times released by the MFB reveal the Deer Park station recorded the greatest improvement in its response times, reaching 90 per cent of code one calls in seven minutes, 54 seconds between October and December 2018, down from eight minutes, 36

seconds between October-December 2017. The brigade responded to 128 incidents in the three months to December 2018, 11 of which were structure fires. Sunshine fire brigade was Brimbank’s busiest, responding to 189 incidents in that period, of which 14 were structure fires. The brigade responded to 90 per cent of code one incidents in seven minutes. Keilor responded to 127 incidents, reaching 90 per cent within eight minutes, 24 seconds, while Taylors Lakes responded to 72 incidents,

reaching 90 per cent within seven minutes, 54 seconds. Across Brimbank, crews are most often called to car accidents and rescue operations, emergency medical incidents and false alarms. A MFB spokeswoman said the organisation was proud of Brimbank’s efforts. “The results are strong and are a testament to the professionalism and dedication of MFB firefighters,” she said. St Albans was the only station where response times increased, rising from seven

minutes, six seconds between October – December 2017, to eight minutes, 18 seconds between October-December 2018. The spokeswoman said the St Albans brigade had only one appliance, meaning nearby crews had to be dispatched to some incidents, resulting in longer than usual response times. “Other factors that … affect response outcomes include an increase in urban density and sprawl, road congestion and works, traffic collisions, rail crossing or boom gates, extreme weather, and the time of day,” she said.

Harmony Day on song Albanvale Primary School paid special tribute to the unique cultures which help shape the school last week. As part of Harmony Day, the school hosted a variety of activities, each showcasing a different culture. Albanvale Primary School leading teacher Michael Uzunovski said it was a day of enjoyment and learning. “We had a look at a lot of our data and noticed just over 80 per cent of our kids speak another language other than English at home,” he said. “So we thought it would be really exciting to celebrate that diversity, come together and recognise everything that makes us Albanvale.” Mr Uzunovski said while the school had celebrated Harmony Day in the past, it wanted to really highlight it this year. “We wanted to really bring the idea of harmony together and make it a really big profile in a large-scale way,” he said.

“We wanted to involve all the teachers and really recognise the traditions and the celebrations of the countries that they all come from. “We dedicated the whole day so that the children have the opportunity to immerse themselves in all the different nationalities.” The school celebrated 13 different nationalities during the day including; Burmese, Vietnamese, Albanian, Australian and Serbian. Firearms, drugs seized in raids

By Tate Papworth The remarkable journeys of two Brimbank men have become intertwined on the Metro Tunnel. Fares Haddad and Meseret Bogale are from refugee/asylum seeker backgrounds and have overcome tremendous adversity after being forced to flee their homelands and forge new lives in a foreign land. Now they’re plying their engineering trades on the biggest public transport project in Victorian history. Mr Bogale arrived in Australia in July, 2013 after fleeing his homeland of Ethiopia. His family fled to Australia earlier, but Mr Bogale stayed behind to finish schooling. “I was a high school student and finished year 12 there,” he said. “My family just left me and moved to Australia in 2010. I followed them later. “I spent three years in a Sudan refugee camp. The refugee camp is hard to explain … You just focus on getting a visa to get you out of the situation – you don’t focus on things like eating and clothes.” These days Mr Bogale is an undergraduate engineer on the Metro Tunnel. He came to the project via the GROW program, which seeks to introduce people from marginalised or disadvantaged backgrounds to training and employment opportunities in the transport and construction industries. He said it’s been a fantastic journey. “People with a background like me, when we get to industry, can be scared,” he said. “There’s a lot of barriers – language, culture, there’s a lot of barriers. But … the Australian workers have been nothing but nice, loving and caring.” Mr Haddad has had a similar experience – fleeing Syria when war engulfed the nation.

Three men have been arrested and firearms, drugs and cash seized by police following a shooting in Sunshine. Police were called to City Place following a dispute allegedly between people known to each other on March 23 about 2.05am. Police said that a firearm was discharged during the dispute, injuring a 43-year-old woman. She was treated by paramedics at the scene. A 27-year-old man was arrested nearby, allegedly in possession of an imitation handgun. Police said that a subsequent search warrant executed at an Albion property uncovered two long-arm firearms and ammunition that were seized by police. The man was charged with possessing and using an imitation firearm, possessing a firearm and possessing ammunition without a licence. A second man, a 34-year-old from Sunshine, was arrested by the Special Operations Group on March 24. He was charged in relation to the shooting and is also facing drugs and weapons charges. Two further search warrants were executed in Sunshine West and Caroline Springs that night. Police said five firearms, two conducted energy devices, and a quantity of drugs and cash were seized. A Caroline Springs man, 33, was arrested on March 25 and was charged with a number of offences.

“I had my own small company dealing with mechanical spare parts,” he said. “When the war started I moved to cities and was eventually forced to flee to Lebanon – I lost everything.” Mr Haddad, his wife and two young children were granted a humanitarian visa and came to Australia. “I couldn’t speak English, I knew nobody over here and I didn’t know how the workforce operated,” he said. “I did some courses

and learnt the language and how the work environment functions here.” His hard work paid off. Mr Haddad is a fuel and rental plant engineer for the tunnel project, responsible for inspecting machinery and managing fuel deliveries. “I love my job – there’s so many things going on each day and I’m thankful for the opportunity,” he said.

The use of false number plates is on the rise in Brimbank and Melton, police are warning. Police took to social media last week to raise awareness of the growing problem, posting on the Brimbank Eyewatch Facebook page that members had noticed an increase in false plates. Brimbank Highway patrol officers spent last week lending a hand to their Melton counterparts and caught out several people using false plates. In the first incident, police spotted a car driving at double the speed limit in Melton while displaying fake plates on March 23. Police said the unlicensed driver, a 20-year-old man, was arrested after allegedly ramming a police car. The man is facing charges of exposing an emergency worker to danger with a vehicle. Police then encountered a motorbike with false number plates in Brimbank on March 25. Police said the rider of the bike had a suspended car licence and was driving an unregistered vehicle. A third vehicle was found to be displaying false plates after police stopped a Holden Commodore in Melton on March 25. Police are urging the public to help them identify false number plates. “Members of the public do have access to the free VicRoads website to check any suspicious plates they may see,” the Facebook post stated.

Albion development bid rejected By Tate Papworth

Cr Hedditch said he had a number of concerns surrounding the proposal.

Cr Bruce Lancashire supported the proposal for 47 Derrimut Street as recommended by council officers. “The proposed development is consistent with the existing development of the area and as such will integrate into the streetscape,” he said. “The site is just over 400 metres from the Albion station and is close to jobs, services and transport.” In November last year, the council rejected a similar proposal for 63 Derrimut Street after a community outcry.

Reducing the numbers of abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens is the target of a low-cost desexing session in Brimbank. The Lost Dogs’ Home is bringing its mobile desexing van to Brimbank on April 9-11, offering cat desexing for $54. Cats must be in good health and aged between nine weeks and eight-years-old. The Lost Dogs’ Home mobile desexing service was launched in 2016 in a bid to help manage the feline population. Since then, 363 cats from Brimbank have been desexed. Brimbank residents can also have their cats microchipped and registered with the council. The van will be at Westvale Community Centre, 45 Kings Road, Kings Park. Parents level up game knowledge By Laura Michell Keilor Downs Secondary College is taking part in a Victorian-first program alerting parents to the links between gaming and gambling. The school is one of 12 taking part in a pilot for the Gaming: Keep Calm and Continue parenting program, which is run by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation and the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. In the coming months, parents of Keilor Downs students will be asked to attend

workshops where they can learn about popular video games such as Fortnite, the language used in the games, and their links to online gambling. Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation chief executive Shane Lucas said many parents were unfamiliar with the world of online gaming and the use of monetised features such as skins and loot boxes which allow players to level up. Mr Lucas said these features increase players’ exposure to and participation in gambling and

gambling-like activities. “There is a strong focus on educating parents about the terms that are unfamiliar to most of us who are over the age of 25,” he said. “Children are engaging in an online world that their parents are not familiar with.” Mr Lucas said the foundation’s research found elements of some online games replicated gambling activities. “The majority of the games are completely harmless and in many respects may be beneficial, but certainly the research we have

indicates there are some games that are starting to encourage activities and behaviours that expose children to gambling,” he said. As reported by Star Weekly, Brimbank council raised concerns about gambling creeping into online gaming in June last year, fearing the features of some games were normalising gambling. The council wrote to the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation asking for it to conduct further research into the prevalence and impact of online gambling.

Lights on for Emergency Expo Brimbank residents can meet the people behind the municipality’s emergency services during an expo at Watergardens Town Centre this weekend. Emergency services agencies including Ambulance Victoria, Australian Federal Police, MFB, St John’s Ambulance, Victoria Police and the SES will be taking part in the expo, which will also feature vehicle displays and children’s activities. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the event will give the community a chance to learn about emergency management in Brimbank. “This is the first time we’ve hosted an Emergency Services Expo in Brimbank,” she said. “This expo is a great opportunity for the community to get a better understanding of the services these agencies provide and have fun at the same time.” The expo is on Saturday, April 6, 10am-4pm. MY bRiMbAnK Chris Nguyen grew up in St Albans and is now giving back to the community as a leader at the Tran Hung Dao – 1st St Albans Scout Group. He speaks with Laura Michell. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I grew up in St Albans and attended the 1st St Albans Scout Group, where I am now a leader. Last year I moved to Maribyrnong but I still enjoy coming back to St Albans. What do you like about St Albans? It has a great multicultural community, which is good for keeping up our culture. Being a Vietnamese Scout group, we find that the Brimbank community is very supportive of us. How long have you been a Scout leader and why did you decide to take on a leadership role. I was a member of the group growing up and decided it was time to give back and lend a hand to my old leader. I have been a leader for five years now. I got my kids to join up at the same time, I love being able to see all the kids in our group develop and change and become more active in the community. What do you enjoy about being part of the Scouts community? We have 57 members at St Albans and I love that we give young people the space to learn and grow. Any building built illegally in Sunshine should be demolished the member for Sunshine, Mr Bill Fogarty, told The Advocate. He was referring to the front page story in The Advocate last week which revealed that three of the districts largest offensive trades had erected buildings and modified their plans without complying with either the Health Act, the Town and Country Planning Act or the Uniform Building Regulation.

The state government has refused to develop the 500-hectare Albion Explosives Factory site. The land is now available to private developers by tender. The government rejected the site because of the cost to the state budget.

A forum aimed at giving the youth of Brimbank a powerful voice in the community will be held in the municipality later this year. A joint initiative of the Brimbank council and local agency Good Shepherd Youth and Family Services will see a public forum, focussing on 12 to 25 year-olds, staged in Brimbank in June.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a local favourite still going strong There’s no doubt the old Sunshine station – and its gloomy, even spooky tunnel/underpass through to City Place – deserved and needed to be replaced. But given the new station edifice involves a much less direct and stair-heavy route, I wondered what impact the new arrangements would have on City Place and the surrounding businesses and neighbourhood. Surely the curious would be much less inclined to venture to “the other side of the tracks” from Sunshine central and its much more numerous shops and eateries? But something rather nice appears to be happening in the face of this enforced “separation”. It’s now possible to consider City Place and the adjacent Sun Crescent as an entirely different neighbourhood. It’s very laid back, with none of the hustle and bustle of Sunshine proper. I’d not go so far as to suggest this neighbourhood is prospering or constantly buzzing, but it does seem to be getting on with doing its own thing. It’s tempting to describe the overall vibe as African, but that would be misleading. There’s hairdressers/barbers, a cafe, groceries and an arts space. The fine and long-term Chinese eatery Dragon Express remains in place, while around the corner is the utterly fabulous Panjali Banana Leaf Malaysian Restaurant, as well as a kebab shop, an Ethiopian place and a Sri Lankan outlet.

I’m guessing it’s also on the ball come dinner time. The classic vegetarian combo yetsom beyaynetu is awesome here – as good as any I’ve tried. Lentils/pulses three different ways; the familiar carrot/potato, beetroot and greens; sprightly salad – all beautifully cooked and presented, all in just the right quantities for a wonderfully balanced meal. This winning offering costs a supremely cheap $12. But if you visit Ghion on Wednesday – day or night – it’ll cost you a mere $10. Among the various meat dishes, lega tibs ($13) is lovely. It’s a tomato-based, zingy concoction with good lamb chunks and the onion providing nice crunch through being just the right side of al dente. Wait times at Ghion are spot on – long enough to bespeak much care in the kitchen, short enough to ward off hungry impatience. SPORT City West Falcons win a tough opener City West Falcons have started the Victorian Netball League championship season with a solid win. Facing a fellow finalist of last season, the Hawks, the Falcons did the damage in the first half and held strong in the second for the 68-57 win. Falcons coach Marg Lind said she was very happy with how the side kicked off the year. “It was a tough game and they really fought hard,” she said. “We had to focus and have concentration across the whole four quarters. “We should have built on the lead in the second half, but they made a good change and brought Shae Gee on for a bit more pace.” Lind said the Falcons’ attacking end, the same that played in last season’s grand final, continued where it had left off. She said there were also positive signs for the new-look defensive line-up. “Sarah [Szczykulski] and Zoe [Davies] are still working each other out,” she said.

“The defenders are growing each week – it’s now about working under that pressure.” Lind said the Falcons went into the game with just eight players while trying to give their state representatives court time across all the grades. That included Australian Netball League player Uneeq Palavi playing in VNL division 1, with fellow ANL player Jane Cook taking the goal shooter position in the top grade. The Falcons’ ANL defender Jacqui Newton didn’t play, with Lind saying they didn’t expect to see her until after the ANL season finished. Lind said it was important to get wins at this time of season when they had close to their best team on the court. “We can’t drop a game while we have that line-up,” she said. While it was a strong start for the championship side, there were mixed results across the Falcons’ other sides.

Lind said the division 1 side was “terrible” in its 60-27 loss. The result was compounded by an ankle injury to shooter Maddy Gray, which will limit the shooting options in the top two grades. The Falcons’ under-19s had a better night, beating the Hawks 47-42. Lind was impressed by the first-up performances of Chloe Langley, Daisy O’Kane and Hannah Magasanik. She said while they had impressed in training it was nice to see what they could do on court in proper competition. All three Falcons sides will this week face Casey Demons. Tara Murray

Lakers start with a bang By Lance Jenkinson As far as opening round matches go, it does not get any tougher for Caroline Springs in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Lakers face record-breaking six-time defending champions Deer Park on the day they unfurl their latest premiership flag at John McLeod Oval this Saturday. Instead of being daunted by the challenge, the Lakers are embracing it and even want to make the first round fixture between the neighbouring clubs a permanent one. “We requested to play Deer Park in round one because it’s good for the local community with the clubs being so close to each other,” Lakers football director Marc Raak said. Caroline Springs will enter the new season merely seeking improvement from the last. It will be the Lakers’ third season in the top-flight after two wins in their promotion season in 2017 and four wins last year. Raak has forecast “six to eight wins” as a pass mark, but is not putting a ceiling on what the Lakers can achieve. He said he was confident the Lakers are better placed than 12 months ago. “I believe we’re fitter and a bit stronger than what we were last year,” he said. “Our 21 and 22-year-olds have had another good pre-season under our coach Brodie Holland. “We’ve topped up with a few key players to make us stronger across all lines.” What Caroline Springs will not do is succumb to quick fixes. The Lakers added experienced players such as Stephen Brewer, Tyson Mihocek and Craig Searle, but there will remain a focus on developing the youngsters. “I’ve always believed that we take the stairs and not the elevator to success,” Raak said. “We want to put a lot of faith in our kids that have come through the system. “We hope we will see the results come over the next two to five years.” Raak is proud of Caroline Springs’ junior program. He is keenly monitoring the development of the elite juniors coming through the system at Town Centre Oval. “I look at our junior program and we’ve got more than a dozen kids playing seniors,” Raak said. In other division 1 games, St Albans will travel to newly promoted Point Cook, Sunshine has a tough away date with Spotswood, Albion will hit the road to face Werribee Districts and the match of the round will see last year’s minor premiers Altona host Hoppers Crossing.

Keilor falls short against storming Jets Keilor Thunder took the challenge up to three-peat champions Sunbury Jets before sinking to an 82-75 loss in the Big V basketball women’s state championship at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday. A slow start came back to bite the Thunder, who got the better of the visitors in the second and fourth quarters, but not enough to bridge the nine-point gap at quarter-time. It was an encouraging performance from Keilor, who might not face a sterner test this season. The Thunder stormed to a 14-point lead at quarter-time and never looked back. Michael Anderson showed why the Thunder were so keen to secure his services as an import. He had a mammoth game with 36 points, 18 rebounds and six assists to be the clear standout on the night. Joel Bellman (21 points) and B.J. Symons (20) were a constant threat on offence. Chris Kaba had a good all-round game for the Thunder with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. Keilor will play a crucial double header this weekend. Western Eagles lift their game for tougher demands Bit by bit, the Western Eagles are building – but they are still at least a week away from a breakthrough victory in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 3. The promoted Eagles are still coming to grips with the tougher level of competition and have yet to fully tap their potential. After a concerning 4-1 mauling at the hands of Sunbury United in the season opener, a vast improvement was delivered in Saturday’s scoreless draw with Point Cook at the Polish Sports and Recreation Complex Eagles – much to the satisfaction of coach Patrick Mangion. “It was a nil-all game, but we did play well – much better than last week,” he said. “We just went back to basics, went back to doing what we know works for us and what’s best for us.” Western Eagles felt like they could have secured all three points. They found the back of the net on one occasion, but it was ruled out for offside. “We did score and the officials stuffed it up,” Mangion said. “They called it offside, but they

know it shouldn’t have been. It makes it worse when they tell you after that it should have been a goal.” There were concerns defensively for the Eagles after conceding four goals in week one. “We held strong,” Mangion said. “They

had their moments, but nothing clear cut. We defended well.” Mateusz Kowalski was a lynchpin in the midfield for the Western Eagles. Frank Proietto and Matthew Napoli worked on either side of Kowalski, getting stuck in defensively while also providing an outlet going forward. Western Eagles will go in search of their first win of the campaign when they travel to FC Strathmore on Saturday. Cowboys rue lost chance By Lance Jenkinson Sunshine Cowboys will look back on their excruciating 20-18 defeat to the Pakenham Eels in the NRL Victoria second grade season opener as one that got away. The Cowboys were in the lead most of the way at Bruce Comben Reserve on Saturday, but were let down by their failure to execute what coaching co-ordinator Grant Paaka described as the “one per centers”. “We led most of the game, but some of the basic fundamentals of the game sort of let the boys down a little bit,” Paaka said. Sunshine’s ball security in the second half left a lot to be desired. The Cowboys tried to be brave in attack, but unnecessarily so, welcoming the Eels back into the contest. “We were pushing unnecessary offloads early in the count,” Paaka said. “We chanced our arm a bit too much.” Running into a strong breeze in the second half, the Cowboys struggled to execute their 52 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 2, 2019

kicking game. Defensively, they were often out of position when the kicks went up. That was partly to do with not reading the conditions and a side with a high volume of turnover trying to understand the structures of player-coach Rikki Mackey. “Kicking into the wind in the second half was a bit of a hindrance,” Paaka said. “Better positioning from our guys would’ve helped – we could’ve prevented a couple of tries.” “It seemed like a couple of tries we were just beaten by the wind.” Sunshine fans can be encouraged by what they saw from their team, despite all the minor faults. The Cowboys have some brave ball runners who will strike fear into opposition defences and defensively their forward pack was rock solid. “We had a lot of strong ball carriers,” Paaka said. “We also defended well, especially in the middle of the field.

“We might need to work a bit on the defence on the edges, but there were a lot of positive signs for the team. “I think it’s going to be a good year once the chemistry settles and some of the new boys start to get familiar with structures and club culture. “They should be better for it come next week and moving forward.” Mike Hurinui showed he has still got game. The veteran playing president was superb at half-back for Sunshine. “He’s still running around,” Paaka said. “He directed the team around the field.” Mackey led by example for his team in the second row. He marched the team down the field with some barnstorming runs on multiple occasions. “He laid a foundation and the boys built off it,” Paaka said. Sunshine will hit the road to take on the Doveton Steelers in the second round on Saturday.

Calder United in goal spree Calder United’s scintillating form has continued in the National Premier League women’s soccer. United ran riot to beat Southern United 17-0 at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday, demonstrating the gulf between the top and bottom sides. Melbourne Knights finished with 10 men in a gutsy 2-1 loss to ladder leader Avondale at Avenger Park on Saturday. Eagles undone by cruise control By Lance Jenkinson North Sunshine Eagles are counting the cost of complacency after a 2-1 loss to Altona City in their Football Federation Victoria menâ€™s state league 1 opener at Larissa Reserve on Saturday. The Eagles were not ruthless enough when they had control in the first half. They led by one goal at half-time, leaving the door open for the underdog visitors to pounce after the break. Both of Cityâ€™s goals came on the back of Eagle errors, the first an own goal and the winner coming through David Mwarabu after the Eagles had turned over the ball in midfield. Eagles coach Ben Isai could sense at half-time his side was not at the peak of its powers. â€œWe were in second gear in the first half, we were cruising,â€? he said. â€œ I said to the players at half-time that Iâ€™m not happy. â€œHad we got into third or fourth gear, the game wouldâ€™ve been over at half-time, but â€Ś they took their chances. â€œItâ€™s definitely disappointing.â€? North Sunshineâ€™s day turned sour when it went down to 10 men after veteran Besnik Kutleshi was given his marching orders. Amidst a scuffle between both sets of players, Kutleshi was adjudged to have over-stepped the mark in the melee and was shown a red card. Isai believes it was a turning point in the match. â€œA lot of people say, youâ€™re down a man, youâ€™re one-nil up and you can manage the game,â€? he said. â€œBut itâ€™s a lot more difficult in round two than round 10 when players are a lot more conditioned. â€œWe made three changes with 15 minutes to go and they were all forced. Players were tiring and cramping.â€?

It was looking good early for North Sunshine when Ajak Panek fired the side ahead after just 20 minutes. Panek has scored in the Eaglesâ€™ opening two games. â€œYou want your attackers scoring goals and weâ€™re happy with his intensity and effort,â€? Isai said. â€œHe never stopped trying and played 90 minutes again.â€? Shane Rexhepi was North Sunshineâ€™s most influential player.

The captain played a commanding role in the midfield. â€œHe was consistent and didnâ€™t make any mistakes,â€? Isai said. The Eagles can store this loss in the back of their minds as a reference point when they are in games in which they feel like they are in cruise control. â€œI made the boys listen to Altona City celebrate and sing,â€? Isai said.

â€œFor five minutes we just listened to them and I could tell itâ€™s really burning our players, which is good, hopefully. Weâ€™ll learn from this. â€œItâ€™s that extra edge â€“ making sure we lift a gear and put teams away. Weâ€™re looking for a response next week.â€? Suzuki Jimny is quite simply the most talked about vehicle on the planet. Forget the multi-million-dollar, ridiculouslyoverpowered vehicles just unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the cute-as-a-button Suzuki is the one that is dominating car-nut conversations everywhere. Since the first photos of the Jimny were released dealers have been bombarded with inquiries. Suzuki Jimny simply has no competition. No one else builds a low-cost, small, genuine 4WD. The closest vehicles come from Jeep and Land Rover, but they are out of the Jimny’s price class. We’ve just spent two weeks in a brace of new Jimnys, one a manual the other automatic. Styling I must admit being wrong when first sighting Jimny at the Queensland launch, feeling that it was just too boxy. But after seeing it on the road and watching the attention our test Jimnys got from passers-by I’ve fallen in love with it. The interior has a neat old-style dashboard, but it’s bang up to date with big easy-to-read instruments and a infotainment screen. Powertrain Power comes from a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 100 horsepower (75 kW in Aussie numbers) and 130 Nm of torque. The torque peak is at a relatively high 4000 rpm, but it feels fine from about 2000 and there’s a nice spread of grunt in all normal driving ranges. The engine sits in front of either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. All four wheels are driven by way of a transfer case with 2H, 4H and 4L modes that are selected by a lever on the centre tunnel.

Safety Small … tough … ladder chassis … rigid-axles … heavy duty suspension. All are excellent features in a genuine 4WD. But make it very difficult to build a tiny vehicle that collapses well in a crash. The result is that Jimny only has a three-star crash rating. Driving One more gear in the manual and a two more in the auto would have been appreciated on

the open road, particularly on motorways. Around town the manual and auto both feel fine and the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels are noticeably lower than on the old Jimny so the interior is more sedate than you might expect. It’s not to small-hatch standards but surprisingly close. Handling is good with levels of grip and ease of control at speeds that belying that fact that it’s a body on chassis 4WD. The steering feels a bit vague at times as on

old-style truck-based 4WDs. The secret is to avoid correcting every tiny little movement and let the Jimny make its own corrections. Strong crosswinds do move it around at times, something that would be very tiring on a long trip. As part of the media launch in January we did serious off-road driving on moguls and steep, deeply rutted hill trails. The new Jimny has even better approach / ramp-over / departure angles than the old, which were already excellent. Jimny takes you places where other alleged SUVs would get well and truly stuck and does it so easily that it feels more like a stroll in the park than a battle with the terrain. Summing up If you enjoy adventurous weekends but live in a big city and can only afford one vehicle the Jimny should sit at the top of your short list.
