If you think climbing 7600 steps at a colosseum such as the MCG seems like a daunting task, Caroline Springs resident Adriana Ivtingioski has a message for you: “If I can do it, anyone can”. The 45-year-old mother was diagnosed with lung cancer three years ago and had to have 33 per cent of her lung removed. “I went to the gym, I never smoked, but one day I coughed up blood,” she said. Ms Ivtingioski caught the cancer in its infancy, but said it drastically altered her active lifestyle. “I was told I couldn’t go back to the gym, I couldn’t move for five to six weeks, but I was determined to prove everyone wrong.” Ms Ivtingioski is now back at the gym and her pump classes, but has expanded her fitness to participate in charity walks. In June she’ll be taking on the MCG Stadium Stomp, where members of the public take on the 7600 steps in the bays of the iconic stadium to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Ms Ivtingioski said she was excited by the challenge. “If I can do this with 33 per cent of my right lung missing, then you can too.” Tate Papworth

All aboard rail ‘super hub’ By Tate Papworth The highly touted airport rail link, complete with a Sunshine “super hub”, was officially signed off by the Prime Minister and Premier last week as calls grew for the Brimbank community and business to be consulted. Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said it was imperative the community was involved in planning for the super hub. “Making sure the local community and business community is part of the planning process will be critical to ensuring we are not

just building a train station but taking steps in creating a world-class retail transport hub which balances place making, transport, retail and office usage into one development,” he said. “If planned and executed to the project’s potential, the area would be strongly supported by consumers and traders could benefit. “I am quietly excited because having the stop in Sunshine could assist in boosting jobs, business and local services, making the area a powerhouse for productivity and innovation. “However, much planning needs to be done to ensure we maximise the potential benefits.” The centre manager of Sunshine

Campaign to change speed limit By Ewen McRae Local MP Catherine Cumming is calling for speed limits on Ballarat Road near Braybrook College to be reduced after a student was struck by a car recently. Ms Cumming raised the issue in Parliament on March 7, the same day a year 7 student at the school was treated by paramedics after being hit on the busy road. While the speed limits on the school’s boundary streets (Duke Street and Burke Street) are lowered to 40km/h at either end of the

school day, Ballarat Road remains at 70km/h all day, and Ms Cumming said something had to change. “To drive past the school, and see the whopping 70km/h sign out the front is such an insult,” Ms Cumming said. “Other areas have the speed limits dropping as you approach a school, drivers are used to that near schools, so why Ballarat Road is treated differently I do not know. “VicRoads are very quick to blame pedestrians instead of drivers, rather than controlling the situation themselves.

“VicRoads need to come out here during the start or end of school hours and see it for themselves, because one incident is too many when you can do something about it.” While there is a footbridge across Ballarat Road, the school said the volume of foot traffic at times and the location of bus stops makes for a safety nightmare. College principal Kelly Panousieris said it was only a matter of time before a more serious incident occurred. “With the bus stop out the front, students waiting there and cars whizzing past at 70, it really is a worry every day for us,” she said.

“We have 1400 students, and probably half use the footbridge to cross Ballarat Road, but kids are kids … so the more we can do to slow down traffic the better.” VicRoads acting regional director Fatima Mohamed said the current measures were adequate for student safety. “The Ballarat Road pedestrian overpass, as well as crossings controlled by traffic lights, provide students and parents with the ability to safely cross all sides of the intersection of Ballarat Road and Duke Street when travelling to and from Braybrook College,” she said.

Green light for resumption of recycling

Society president Shane Talbot said the event, which would also include members from other clubs, would include many fancy flights. “We’ll have at least 50 aircraft here, so it’s well worth coming down and having a look,” he said. “You might even be interested in joining the sport.”

The event will be held at the club’s Keilor base, located in Sydenham Park, off Farr Road, from 10am-3.30pm on Sunday, April 28. Mr Talbot said the model aircraft could do everything their bigger cousins down the road at Tullamarine are capable of – except carry passengers. “The models these days are made of moulded foam so they’re incredibly lifelike,” he said. “The aerobatic ones can do loops, figure eights – anything a real plane can do.”

The club currently boasts more than 100 members, but Mr Talbot is keen to add to that. “We’re growing each year and always want more members,” he said. “It’s great down here – we have a chat, a coffee, it’s a great place to socialise, but the best part is taking the control and flying these aircraft.” Entry by gold coin donation. The SKM recycling saga is over – for Brimbank at least. SKM Services has been given permission to resume accepting recyclable waste materials at its Laverton North premises, meaning Brimbank recyclable waste will no longer be sent to landfill. The EPA last week announced that, after another inspection of the Laverton North site, the company was found to have met the conditions of the notice and was able to resume accepting recyclable waste materials. The Brimbank council welcomed the developments in a post to its Facebook page last Wednesday. “We’re happy to advise that our recycling processing provider, SKM Services, is now able to recommence receiving recyclable material at its Laverton processing facility. “This means, effective immediately, all recycling collected by Brimbank council will again be sent to, and processed at, a dedicated recycling facility. “We share the disappointment and frustration experienced by you over the last few weeks. We thank everyone for your patience and understanding.” SKM’s Laverton North and Coolaroo sites were both ordered to stop accepting recyclable waste materials by the EPA last month because they claimed stockpiled waste posed a “significant” fire risk. The Coolaroo site remains non-compliant and is still not able to accept recycling waste.

Home invasion rate on the slide By Alesha Capone The number of home invasions recorded in the west has fallen by about a third within 12 months, as Victoria Police “relentlessly” hunt down offenders who commit the crimes. In December 2016, the state government made home invasions a specific offence under the Crimes Act, defined as when a person, in the company of others, commits a burglary while armed or while there is a person in the house. According to the state’s Crime Statistics

Agency, there were 91 home invasions in the west reported to police between December 2016 and September 2017, including 38 in Brimbank, 23 in Melton, 20 in Wyndham and 11 in Maribyrnong (there were none reported in Hobsons Bay). In comparison, between October 2017 and September last year, there were 61 home invasions recorded in the west – 27 in Brimbank, 21 in Melton, nine in Wyndham, two in Maribyrnong and two in Hobsons Bay. Between October 2017 and September last year, Brimbank and Melton recorded the

highest and second-highest amount of home invasions out of all Victoria’s municipalities. Wyndham recorded the equal fifth-highest amount of home invasions, along with Hume and Greater Dandenong, with each municipality experiencing nine home invasions across the 12 months. Acting Superintendent Adrian Healy said it was “pleasing” to see a decrease in the number of home invasions but “any incident is one too many”. “The emotional toll this type of offending has on victims is enormous,” he said.

“Over the past two years we have increased the number of proactive patrols in key hotspots – particularly in the west – and have a dedicated team of detectives responsible for this type of offending. “This hard work is paying off and we are arresting offenders in record numbers – in fact, Victoria Police is relentlessly investigating and hunting down these particular offenders. “The community can be reassured that our police will continue to work tirelessly and prioritise this issue so everyone can feel safe in their own home and community.”

Saigon talking points Sunshine West artist Phuong Ngo hopes a new exhibition starts a conversation. Ngo has contributed to Those Monuments Don’t Know Us at Bundoora Homestead. The exhibition features works from artists who bring diverse perspectives and cultural narratives to notions of “belonging” in Australia. Ngo said his work dealt with French colonialism in Vietnam and how that has impacted on the Vietnamese diaspora in Australia. “The work consists of 300 or more photographs from the Saigon marketplace, from the colonial period right up until the (Vietnam) War period,” he said. “They’re displayed in perspex, hanging from red string and held together with a Chinese knotted tassel, which builds on the idea that the South Vietnamese community here holds a strong connection to French colonialism and

there’s an allegiance attached to it. Vietnam was colonised by China and ruled for 1000 years by them until French colonialism, so there’s a lot of different elements to the Vietnamese people.” Ngo hopes his work, Colony Colony, gets people talking about their own histories and how they relate to living in modern Australia. “The work really looks at how we talk about European expansionism, and also pulls in the fact that we kind of omit that there are other factors as well,” he said. “A lot of my work is about digging back into history, so this one was the starting point for me going back beyond the war and looking at identities and how that influences our thinking now.” The exhibition will be at Bundoora Homestead, 7 Prospect Hill Drive, until May 5. Bike charges

Eagle-eyed officers intercepted a man on a Yamaha motorbike last week, after he pulled into a convenience store carpark about 12.15am on March 13. Police spotted the bike on Caroline Springs Boulevard. As the rider entered the store, quick-footed police in tow allegedly found the man to be in possession of a quantity of drugs. The 26-year-old Tarneit man was also a disqualified rider and the bike, which he had borrowed from a friend, was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $878.50 He was arrested and has been charged with drug and traffic-related offences and was bailed to appear at Sunshine Magistrates Court on July 30.

Set a date for the fete The biggest day of the year for Burnside Retirement Village residents is just around the corner, with their annual fete this weekend. The fete – which helps to fund social events, entertainment and living upgrades for the village – will include more than 40 stalls, raffles, Devonshire tea, spinning wheel and a monster raffle as the whole community comes together for a day of fun and fellowship. Organising committee member Marlene Gorman said the day was a huge event on the village’s calendar, with the benefits felt throughout the year. “We sometimes have up to 2000 people down there,” Ms Gorman said.

“It funds our social activities, new equipment for our community centre, new audio-visual gear to benefit everyone, and keeping our sporting gear up to date. “We like to improve everything every year, so our residents get the benefit of the money that we raise. “It brings the village community together to help put it all together and they chat to new people and work together to make it all happen. Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault in Braybrook last week. Investigators believe a man was assaulted and left unconscious by a number of unknown offenders on South Road about 7.30pm on March 13. By Tate Papworth More than 35 determined riders are about to complete a 347-kilometre journey, raising funds for a good cause. The Victoria Ride for Sick Kids 2019 is expected to conclude today with riders arriving at Ronald McDonald House in North Fitzroy, three days after beginning their journey in Lorne on Saturday. The riders hope to raise $250,000 to support Ronald McDonald House, which offers a home away from home for parents and families of sick children. Julianne Bugeja, of St Albans, said the house has been a life saver for her and her family after daughter Alyssa was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a rare neuromuscular disorder, when she was just nine months old. “Alyssa was diagnosed in April 2005 and two weeks after that was her first of many admissions to the Royal Children’s Hospital,” Julianne said. “With her condition, when she picks up things like a cold – something we’d use tissues, suck it up and get over – she gets very sick from.” This past four months Alyssa has had multiple stays in the hospital. “It’s been a rough four months – in November Alyssa contracted meningitis and in January she had spinal surgery which she got an infection from in February,” Julianne says. “With intensive care they don’t encourage parents to sleep by the bedside just in case there’s an emergency and they need to get machines and things like that through, but because we do most of Alyssa’s care with a special machine, we need to be close by – that’s one of the reasons the house has been so wonderful for us.”

Ms Bugeja said the house had been a source of comfort over a challenging 13-years. “We’ve got two boys as well so this place has really helped us keep the family unit together. It’s also been a great support network to meet other families. “It’s a very lonely place when you have a sick child, so to have people to talk to, who know

what you’re going through is really important.” She thanked the riders for their efforts. “A lot of people know about the Ronald McDonald House, but if you haven’t had to experience it, live it, I’m not sure you can fully understand how important it is and just how much it does for families with sick kids. It’s a wonderful thing these riders have done.”

Call to work for more play Brimbank council wants its local parks in the spotlight. The council is calling on Parks Victoria to hold a board meeting in Brimbank to talk through ways to make better use of parks such as Brimbank Park, Horseshoe Bend Farm and Organ Pipes National Park. Councillor Virginia Tachos said the parks could be used to encourage more activities to improve residents’ health. “Brimbank is strategically situated in the heart of the west,” Cr Tachos said. “This is a hugely exciting and transformational time for the west … yet Brimbank still faces many challenges including poor health and wellbeing outcomes in sections of our community. “Creating healthy places and greener spaces that will support Brimbank’s diverse and growing population is crucial to supporting Brimbank’s livability. “These parks would be an ideal location to implement programs such as a ‘1000 steps’, or other programs that are free and accessible to our community.” Cr Tachos raised the issue as a notice of motion at the recent council meeting, flagging the possibility of the mayor and councillors speaking with the Parks Victoria board. The west’s Vietnamese community has dug deep to raise $300,000 in support of the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The fundraising appeal was spearheaded by the Venerable Thich Phuoc Tan from the Quang Minh Temple in Braybrook and supported by Vietnamese community groups and leaders. Quang Minh Temple fundraising director Dr Pham Phuc Nham said it has been an honour for the Vietnamese community to contribute to the new $200 million hospital, being built alongside the existing Sunshine Hospital.

Flower power on show the different nationalities living in harmony together.” The exhibition, Reflection of God’s Creation, will kick off a busy year for the artist, with another exhibition, in Braybrook in May, to be followed by a number of engagements in Europe to showcase his art, which includes sculpture, fashion illustration and paintings. “I will have a charity exhibition in Vienna in June, followed by another in Bulgaria in Sofia and also one in Croatia in Zagreb,” Taskov said. “Next year I’m already booked for a show in Denmark, so it is a busy time.” Proceeds from sales at this exhibition will go towards the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, which helps orphaned children. The exhibition, at 107-139 Churchill Avenue, Braybrook, will run until March 29.

Brimbank’s colourful flora is being showcased in a new exhibition. The work of local artist Gantcho Taskov, the exhibition features photographs of flower arrangements created with flowers collected from Brimbank walking tracks and gardens. Taskov is hoping the Braybrook Community Hub show reflects the beauty that can be found around every corner. “Our area is absolutely fantastic,” he said. “I’ve been all over the world … Australia has absolutely wonderful nature that has to be preserved and I want to show that to as many people as I can. “Every morning I run 10 kilometres at the local cricket ground in Albion, and after the running I select some native flowers to combine into my art. “Australia is such a multicultural place … some of these arrangements represent

Brimbank is in business By Ewen McRae Brimbank plans to become the home of many business success stories, following the opening of a business development and education hub in Sunshine. The iHarvest business development hub and Brimbank Learning Futures educational development hub will be housed at the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre and the nearby Visy Cares Hub, and will allow for new start-ups and small business to have a dedicated space to work. The $2.7 million redevelopments of the centres were unveiled recently, with Victorian senator Janet Hume on hand to launch the facility. The project redeveloped the fourth level of the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre to create a business development hub and refurbished the ground floor of the Visy Cares Hub facility to create an education development hub. “These new facilities provide impressive contemporary work spaces for small businesses, while supporting business mentoring programs, masterclasses, workshops and networking,” Senator Hume said. “They also enable the development of partnerships and programs to support young people and others in the Brimbank community to access further education and training.” The iHarvest hub will provide sit-stand desks, meeting rooms, printing and scanning facilities and high-speed broadband to support small businesses. The new Brimbank Learning Futures facilities include formal and informal learning spaces, IT training suites, creative corners, an auditorium, a careers counselling room and other amenities.

Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the business hub was an innovative approach to benefit the community. “The Brimbank Learning Futures supports vulnerable community members with pathways to education, training and employment, while iHarvest Coworking Sunshine is a vibrant and affordable co-working space for start-ups,

entrepreneurs, freelancers and small business,” Cr Congreve said. “Thanks to these new facilities, members of our community can lay the foundation of their successful start-up business.” The project was jointly funded with the federal government investing $1,119,517 and the council $1,567,323.

Coles tones down the noise Coles stores in Keilor, Braybrook and Taylors Hill are going quiet. The supermarket giant last week introduced its low-sensory shopping experience, also known as quiet hour, to its Brimbank stores. Between 10.30-11.30am every Tuesday, noise and lighting will be reduced, along with other distractions, in an effort to help customers who find it challenging to shop in a heightened sensory environment. During the hour Coles radio is switched off, register and scanner volumes are reduced, no PA announcements (excluding emergencies) are made and trolley collections stop. The concept came about after a Victorian customer reached out to the company on Facebook in early 2017 with an idea to reduce noise in store to make it easier for parents shopping with children on the autism spectrum. Coles accessibility sponsor Peter Sheean said the goal is to roll the concept out to every store. “We know that it is estimated that one in 70 people in Australia are on the spectrum so that’s a lot of our customers who find it challenging to come into our supermarket,” he said. “Our goal is to offer Quiet Hour at every eligible Coles supermarket by 2023. A further warrant was later issued for the offence of contravening a community corrections order. Police are seeking information as to PAYNE’s current whereabouts.

On November 9, 2018, Stacey PAXTON failed to appear at the Heidelberg Magistrates Court to answer charges including possessing a drug of dependence. A warrant was issued for the arrest of PAXTON. Investigators believe that she is frequenting the Brimbank area. Police are seeking information as to PAXTON’s current whereabouts.

The state government has pledged more than 150 new nurses and midwives for the soon-to-be-opened Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos toured the hospital with nurses and midwives last week for a preview of the building, which will be opened in May. The $200 million hospital will include a critical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for the most critically sick babies – the first of its kind in the western suburbs. It will also include a total of 237 beds in new and refurbished accommodation, 20 maternity delivery rooms, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics. Mr Andrews said the hospital will mean more families in the west can access world-class paediatric and maternity services closer to home. Ms Mikakos added that the balance of nurses to patients was critically important to delivering high care. “There’s no use building world-class hospitals if our nurses and midwives don’t have the resources they need to do what they do best. That’s why we’ve given them the fair patient ratios that they deserve,” she said. The government recently passed legislation which increases nurse to patient ratios, which will deliver 600 new nurses and midwives in public hospitals. The government said the new ratios mean the number of nurses and midwives will be

rounded up – instead of down – removing a loophole that meant staff often had to carry a workload of up to 50 per cent higher than the prescribed ratio. Member for St Albans Natalie Suleyman welcomed the news. “This will be a game changer for our community. Thousands of mums will be able to have their baby and ensure they get the treatment and care they need.” The new hospital is also set to alleviate pressure on Sunshine Hospital’s maternity department, which was pushed to its limits last year. The hospital birthed nearly 5800 babies last year, including multiple months where 500 babies were born – records for the hospital. The new facility will bring about the capacity to birth 7020 babies a year – welcome news for a hospital forecast to deliver 7000 babies a year by 2026.

Fighting spirit kicks in By Alesha Capone Tarneit man Andrew Collicoat, who will participate in his first-ever MMA cage fight at the weekend, says he hopes to inspire others. At age 13, Mr Collicoat was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, an inflammation of a spinal cord section, which damages insulating material covering nerve cell fibres and interrupts messages which the nerves send through the body. Mr Collicoat said doctors told him he might never walk again. He spent four years seeing a physiotherapist almost daily and was able to walk unaided, but to this day he has no movement in one ankle and restricted movement in other parts of his body. Mr Collicoat said this did not stop him when he decided to “get fit” some years ago. He joined the Resilience Training Centre in Footscray and lost 30 kilograms doing crossfit. He also took up Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has won his division at the Pan Pacific Jiu-Jitsu Championships for the past three years. Success he says he could not have achieved without the staff at Resilience Training Centre, particularly his coach, Olympian and professional UFC fighter Daniel Kelly. Mr Collicoat said when he decided to enter the Wimp 2 Warrior Challenge at the centre last year, Mr Kelly was supportive. Wimp 2 Warrior, a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) program, involves six months of intensive training. At the program’s end, participants take part in an MMA cage fight. Mr Collicoat, who works in Sunshine, said he hoped his journey would inspire others, including those with a disability, to take on new challenges.

Calling all volunteers Volunteer West is looking to bolster volunteer numbers across Brimbank and Melton. The community organisation, which supports volunteering in the west, is offering a free training and mentoring program for 24 small, not-for-profit organisations. Volunteer West project worker Phuong MacCallum-Le said the first round of students have graduated and after a successful run, the organisation is looking to expand the offering to Brimbank and Melton. “The first group of 12 organisations from Moonee Valley, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay finished the training recently and they all were excited and appreciative,” she said. “These organisations are from various fields including migrants, recycling, gardening, aged care, sport, education, animal and religion. “The second group of training will start by the end of March and there are still available spots for organisations in Brimbank and Melton.” Ms MacCallum-Le said that upon completion of the training, organisations should be able to attract more volunteers, provide better supervision and support to volunteers and also provide a more fulfilling experience for volunteers. A car ploughed through a picket line at a Sunshine factory last week knocking over two men, a union official has alleged. Mrs. Betty De Bono, shop steward of the Miscellaneous Workers Union, employed at Taubman Paints, claimed the two men were pushed along about five feet by a management car, which drove straight through the line of striking workers.

The people of Ardeer have inherited the effects of poor planning by successive State governments and the Shire of Braybrook of the 1940s and 1950s, Sunshine Council’s chief executive officer, Mr John James, said this week.

Residents will have greater access to parkland in the municipality after the closure of Brimbank’s sewerage plant. A portion of privately leased land at Brimbank Park – occupied by the Keilor Sewerage Treatment Plant – will be handed back to the public following the recent completion of the north-western sewer.

They risked their lives to fight Victoria’s devastating Black Saturday bushfires, working tirelessly to protect people and property and helped pick up the pieces in the aftermath. Now emergency service personnel will receive well-deserved thanks with the Sunshine Lions and Rotary clubs leading the charge by organising a day of free food and entertainment just for them and their families.

MY BRIMBANK Melton and Caroline Springs has a new top cop – Local Area Commander Zorka Dunstan. The experienced police Inspector talks with Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection to Melton/Caroline Springs?

This was the third one in Melton in less than one month. These deaths on the road are all avoidable. My priority is to prevent road trauma and avoid other families and friends having to live through such unnecessary tragedy. We recently had a traffic operation over the long weekend which resulted in a number of people being caught speeding, driving whilst on drugs and/or alcohol – and the list continues. My other priority is to work with community members to prevent children and adults from offending. I am passionate about this cause.

I am the newly appointed Local Area Commander for the Melton Police Service Area that covers the Melton Shire and houses the Melton and Caroline Springs police stations. I have grown up in the western suburbs, having lived in the Brimbank area for most of my life and currently reside there with my family. How long have you lived/worked in the area?

What are some of the things you love most about your line of work?

Tell us about your role at Melton. My role as an Inspector is extremely varied. My main responsibilities include stakeholder engagement with key community members to promote collaboration for current and emerging issues impacting the community. I am also responsible for the management of all the uniform members in the Melton and Caroline Springs police stations. This can include the management of larger-scale operations and events. The role is challenging and it keeps me on my toes. I am supported by

I had previously worked in the neighbouring areas of Sunshine and Footscray, which was some time ago. I have most recently worked at the Priority Communities Division, having managed projects that have impacted the Melton community. These include the Community Safety Network events such as the recent Melton and Caroline Springs community days and the Social Cohesion program involving the Youth Basketball program. a great team and feel extremely privileged to be doing this role. What is your background in Victoria Police? I spent almost a decade at the Critical Incident Response Team. I was a trained negotiator, having dealt with siege and hostage situations. Whilst at the CIRT, I also provided dignitary protection to key figures including former prime ministers, ex-Victorian premiers and the most memorable being the Dalai Lama. The Critical Incident Response Unit was

where I developed my tactical skills, which complemented my varied uniform operational service. I eventually got promoted to Inspector in 2015 where I worked at the Priority Communities Division. Whilst there, I was involved with the development of projects specific to the Aboriginal community and the African Australian Community Taskforce. What are your priorities for Melton? In my first week as the local area commander, there was a fatal collision in the Melton area.

I love the variety and meeting people. One day I could be at a large incident and the next I could be at an event getting coerced into some type of traditional dance. It is different every day. What’s something people don’t know about you? I used to play the piano accordion – not very well. I couldn’t speak English until I started primary school, despite being born in Australia. What would you like to see improved in policing in Melton/Caroline Springs? I am hoping to improve community confidence in police. Policing is so challenging and the members do such an amazing job in sometimes difficult circumstances. I am wanting to promote a police service where our members maintain professionalism, are respectful and empathetic to better serve the community.

Club Italia’s new recipe for dining joy T

he homemade cannelloni and lasagna are still on the menu at Club Italia Sporting Club in Sunshine, but head chef Peter Serrano has freshened up the menu and introduced delicious new dishes. Among them are the new entree of scallop and prawn skewers, marinated and grilled and served with a Mediterranean couscous. Old-school prawn cocktail is re-emerging on the dining scene – Peter pays tribute to this classic by serving it with his homemade sauce.

ne of the stars at Caroline Springs Child Care and Kindergarten is a bunny named Hop, a bundle of fur that gives and receives love while helping teach children about responsibility and care. He’s a bit like the educators at the Centre. They’re highly qualified, with a combined 200 years of experience. Centre Director Chris Smith explains what the Centre has to offer. “We are one of six Centres across Melbourne that operate under the umbrella of Little Flyers Learning Centres, which began in Eltham College with the aim of combining early education and dedicated care at the highest level,” Chris says. “We have seven programmes run by educators who implement an approved curriculum for the learning journey of each individual child. “One of our programmes is a government-funded kindergarten for four year olds. We have a strong focus on each child’s goals and offer an indoor and outdoor programme.” Each year, every child is given a learning portfolio and families are kept informed every step of the way. “Our portfolios are keepsakes celebrating the time a child has spent at the Centre, recording the learning during their years through images, pieces of their work and documentation,” Chris says.

“We also have an app for families, named My Family Lounge, through which families are able to view their child’s learning journey with daily journals. “And we have a Facebook page that enables families to enjoy special moments at the Centre, as well as weekly and monthly electronic newsletters highlighting dates to remember.”

t’s time to get out your running shoes and take part in this year’s WalkWest, a fundraiser organised by Western Health Foundation in partnership with Dow Chemicals Australia, to support “best care” for families across Melbourne’s west. To be held in Footscray Park, Maribyrnong on Sunday morning, March 24, WalkWest is loads of fun for the whole family, with two, five and 10-kilometre runs/walks, and loads of free entertainment, activities and an array of delicious food at the WalkWest Village. Starting and finishing at Footscray Park, the wheelchair-friendly, bitumen-paved route is along the picturesque Maribyrnong River and participants of all ages and fitness levels will raise valuable funds for the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital (pictured). During the event, the WalkWest Village will be a hive of activity, with fun things to do for everyone. ince they were teenagers Mathew Bolger and Santo Larosa have had a passion for cars, and around 15 months ago they got together to buy Avondale Body Works when the previous owner of nearly 40 years retired. When Mathew and Santo, who have now racked up 40 years’ combined industry experience, met a couple of years ago they found they were on the same page. “Santo and I were both ready to take the plunge into ownership, so it was pretty exciting to take over Avondale Body Works,” Mathew says. “I oversee the day-to-day running of the office, customer service and dealing with insurance companies, while we have a full-time panel beater and Santo also helps with customer service when he’s not busy spray painting.” Mathew says the business is all about offering expert skills to anyone needing their cars brought back to as good as new, as well as looking after often stressed people who have been involved in an accident. “I deal with the insurance side every day so I’m used to working with insurance companies,” Mathew continues. “When a customer contacts us, we help them fill in a claim form; organise a replacement car for the duration of the repairs; write a quote on the accident damage; and organise an independent assessor to authorise repairs. “Then the car is repaired and returned to the customer as good as new. I also advise about which insurance companies are reliable.

“I love helping people get their cars back on the road as soon as possible without any stress.” When a customer is involved in an accident and it isn’t their fault, Avondale Body Works offers a full recovery service. Santo says the workshop team takes huge pride in their work.

ow does a free app game that offers chances for personal financial rewards and also contributes to the welfare of your favourite wild animal at the same time sound? The game, Where’s Buzz, is the brainchild of Keilor Village resident Wally Miszewski, a retiree who has a deep concern for – and affinity – with animals. His dog, Buzz, was the inspiration behind the iPhone app. “I was blessed with a special and loving friend who gave me happiness for many years,” Wally says. “Buzz recently succumbed to an incurable illness and his passing got me thinking of all the animal world. “Thousands of animals are being mistreated, poached and hunted for money … displaced from their natural habitats to the point of extinction. “Where’s Buzz was developed as a tribute to him and to remind us all of the responsibility we have for our animal friends.” Wally harnessed the talents of a Sydney young gun as well as a talented programmer in Serbia who helped with coding and building the app, while Wally worked on the graphics and kept refining the app’s strategy and game play until, earlier this year, it was ready to go live. Where’s Buzz, with premium security built in, is available now, free from the Apple App Store. So how does Where’s Buzz work? “Firstly,” says Wally, “it’s a very

challenging search with in app games to speed up finding Buzz. Secondly, it’s a search where the players can combine efforts to find the location – and thus be in for a chance to win cash, ‘The Reward’, as well as have about one-third of any win directed to their favourite animal charity.

People who play Where’s Buzz are in control of where their donations go … “The search for Buzz – the essence of the game – could take weeks, and the more people on the hunt, the greater the reward for self and charity. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir spices it up with Dukkah Dukkah is a bright new arrival on Vernon Street. The long dining room has been done up a treat. It’s casual and elegant, spacious and warm. There’s a lot of old, gorgeous wood in use. Bennie and I choose the easy option of getting stuck into the share platter, which sells for $48 for two people. It starts with three dips, all with clear and concise flavours – and all offering something different from most Mid-East eats emporiums. Lemon turmeric hummus with Egyptian dukkah, fel-fel (chargrilled capsicum cream cheese with sweet paprika, walnuts and chives) and beet labneh (caramelised beetroot and yoghurt with black sesame seeds) come with good toasted bread that runs out just before we’ve slurped the last of the dips. But as Bennie quips, more bread and we’d be stuffed before the mains arrive. And the share plate mains? They are splendid. Two fat, exemplary cigars of lamb kofta – dense, perfect and with just the right mild level of Mid East-style seasoning. Two skewers of chicken shish tawook with capsicum and red onion. The chook chunks look sufficiently large to promise dryness, but such is emphatically not the case. In other words, superb. Our meaty skewers were accompanied by very nice quinoa tabouli and rice pilaf in exactly the right proportions.

Bennie reckons $48 is a bit steep, with the sort of deal he gets at his beloved Footscray Best Kebab House colouring his views profoundly. I beg, very much, to differ. Dukkah is a quite different sort of place and the quality – especially of the meats – is above that of the majority of kebab shops. And the combined regular cost of our dishes from the menu would be $54. No such quibbling is possible with the Dukkah desserts – and we try both. Om ali – puff pastry pudding with coconut, cinnamon milk, hazelnut and sultanas served in a tagine – is the Egyptian version of bread-and-butter. It’s wonderful, rich, quite heavy. This beauty – which could easily serve two – clocks in at a very cheap $12. Kunafa (layers of shredded angel hair pastry, mango and cream topped with pistachio dust and rose petals) is lighter, a good deal more playful – and just as tasty. It, too, is priced keenly at $11. SPORT Solid defence sees Green Gully through Green Gully showed its gritty side in a 2-0 win over Port Melbourne Sharks in the National Premier League at Green Gully Reserve on Friday night. The Cavaliers barely reached great heights by way of their attack, but their tight defence and game management shone though all night to secure all three points. Cavaliers general manager Raymond Mamo was pleased with his side’s first half performance, but admits they dodged a few bullets after half-time. “We came out and were really good in the first half, just like the game against Dandenong City [the week before],” he said. “We sort of sat back a little bit too much in the second half. “By sitting back like that, you can invite trouble and that’s something we’ve got to be aware of.” With a one-goal advantage at the break, Green Gully seemed content to defend what it had, opting to sit deep in the second half rather than take it to Port Melbourne. While it was a dangerous ploy, it worked to

a tee and resulted in the Cavaliers’ first clean sheet since round one. “I thought the defence did really well,” Mamo said. “They held their shape and were instrumental in the win. “At one stage Port threw everything at us, but I thought our defence was really solid all the way through.” In-form striker Alex Salmon continued his hot start to life at Green Gully. He fired in a double to make it a league-best five goals in as many games. Salmon scored his first goal from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time after midfielder Jay Davies was brought down following an aggressive incursion into the box. His second goal came in the 88th minute when substitute Teeboy Kamara produced a delightful cross, which Salmon controlled with a soft touch and then powered home. With dominant players Nick Kalmar and Manny Muscat on the sidelines, it was a game that tested Green Gully’s depth, but they found a way.

Jeremy Walker led by example in the absence of captain Kalmar. Walker would have blown up a GPS with the amount of running he did in the right-back position. Left-back Jordan Lampard was also praised for his high work rate. “He’s is getting better and better,” Mamo said. “He is one of the left-backs to look out for.” The fifth-placed Green Gully will square off with ladder leader Avondale in a mouth-watering game at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday at 3pm. Home-grown youngster Anthony Duzel played a stellar role in the Melbourne Knights dominant 2-0 win over Dandenong City in the National Premier League on Friday night. Duzel capped an outstanding performance in the midfield with the game-sealing goal late in the second half. Post-match, Knights’ coach Micky Colina sung the praises of Duzel for his promising start to the season. “I’m really happy for him,” Colina said. “He’s worked hard and he’s had quite a few good weeks. “We’re a young squad and someone like that, who you give an opportunity to from round one, it’s good to see that he’s been effective and influential in the games … and deservedly got himself on the scoresheet with a well worked goal.” The third-placed Melbourne Knights have been one of the more impressive teams in the opening five rounds. ■ The roller coaster ride that is the AFL season gets under way this week and the Bulldogs have a difficult first-up opponent in Sydney. The players will be wearing the ‘Thor’-inspired jumpers when they run onto Marvel Stadium, and why not? It is a marketing exercise, pure and simple. The club is not changing the colours, deleting the past or rewriting the theme song. I am a traditionalist in many ways but I don’t see the long term harm in this and if it becomes an annual occurrence, then so be it. The harsh commercial realities of running a football club do have to be factored in sometimes. ■ All football fans, regardless of the club you support, want blokes such as Dale Morris playing for as long as he can. His latest injury setback was felt by all who love the game and the warriors who beat the odds to play it. Dale plays footy because he loves it, and that love has driven him to – and through – all sorts of adversity. It has also piloted him to achieve the ultimate success – an AFL premiership. E.J Whitten’s famous on-ground speech in his last game focused on guts and determination, and that befits the man who wears the number 38 for the Bulldogs. Like all football fans, I hope he wears it again soon. ■ Werribee Cricket Club has every right to be filthy about missing out on playing a final at home, and Werribee Football Club has every right to want to host practice games on its home ground. The problem of course is it is the same ground, wanted for the same time. Shared grounds will become a thing of the past if the land becomes available for sports to go it alone. Werribee Football Club has not had a home practice game for a decade and has a multi-million dollar facility which hosted the game last Friday night in front of a good crowd. Werribee Cricket Club has enjoyed great results on its home track this year and lost that enormous advantage when forced to relocate. We all know the problem and the solution. Fix it.

Crows captain Troy Stone pointed to the first session on day one, when his side shrugged off losing the coin toss by having Point Cook in desperate trouble at 4-12, as the key to his side’s commanding lead in the match. Point Cook was bowled all out for just 81 – not the kind of return you want from a pitch that did not really have any demons in it. “The pitch didn’t play any part with the wickets and if I had’ve won the toss I would’ve batted too,” Stone said. “Having them 4-12 allowed us to dictate terms.

“They’re on the back foot and looking to survive rather than score and I can set fields accordingly.” It was a near flawless effort with the ball for Sunshine. New ball users Cherith Fernando and Josh Michetti picked up where they left off in the semi-final with some impressive early bowling. Fernando finished with 3-38 off 12 overs, while Michetti took 2-18 off 13, including the scalps of the two openers. Left arm spinner Nikhil Pottabathini chimed in with 2-2 off 5.3 overs. Asela Aluthge sent down a tight 14 overs to take 3-12. “He was back to his best with the ball,” Stone said of Aluthge. “He’s got all the tricks in the book, slower balls, cutters, so I’m glad I don’t have to face him in the middle to be honest.” After losing 2-9 with their first two dismissals

Aluthge (117) and Shehriyar Cuttlerywala (41) changed the course of the match with a 119-run third wicket partnership. “That was an outstanding partnership,” Stone said. “They put us on the front foot and maybe batted them out of the game,” Stone said. “Sheri produced a great innings – 41 off 183 – that’s tough finals cricket batting. “Asela hit 17 boundaries and a six and they had no answers for him. “He hit the ball to all parts of the ground.” Sunshine finished the second day on 8-197 for a commanding lead of 116. Parkers fall at preliminary final again

Abbey on the upswing By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown Women’s Lacrosse Club rising star Abbey O’Mahony will be the pulse of Australia’s midfield at the under-19 Women’s Lacrosse World Championships in Canada later this year. O’Mahony impressed the national selectors with her starring role in Victoria’s title-winning run at the under-18 Australian Lacrosse Association National Championships last year. The 18-year-old was elated to receive a call-up to her first national team. “Getting to wear Australia across your chest, it’s unbelievable,” O’Mahony said. “Representing your country is not something a lot of people get to do, so it’s exciting and I’m really looking forward to it.” O’Mahony’s performances for Victoria earnt All Star honours at the nationals. The Williamstown resident had to do it all for the Vics in the midfield, taking the draws, being alert on defence and providing an attacking option. She used her height to win the aerial balls and speed and endurance to work up and back.

As the captain of the Victorian team, she set a fine example for her teammates to follow. O’Mahony capped off an incredible tournament individually with a title and that is what she wanted above all. “Being able to captain the winning team, the national championship team, it was an even better feeling,” she said. “It’s just a great honour.” O’Mahony got her start in lacrosse at the age of 12. She was introduced to the game at Williamstown Women’s – the club she plays for in state league. Colleen Hunter has had a big influence over her in her early years in lacrosse. “She’s been a mentor of mine since I started,” O’Mahony said. Impressing from a young age, O’Mahony went on to represent Victoria’s under-15 team at numerous tournaments. After showing tremendous leadership on tours, she was appointed skipper of the state under-18 side, which she led to victory. O’Mahony never changed the way she approached the game or how she presented herself on game day.

“I was myself the whole time,” she said. “I thought, if I’ve been selected [as captain], I’m doing that already [demonstrating leadership qualities], so I just kept doing what I was doing and it all came naturally. “I wanted to be there for everyone and make it as enjoyable as I could.” O’Mahony is looking forward to her first overseas competition. She is eager to get to Canada to take on the world’s best players in her age group, though she knows there is plenty of toil to be undertaken by the squad in the lead up. “I am counting down the days, but we still have a lot of work to do before then,” O’Mahony said O’Mahony is the March nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. O’Mahony will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist her in achieving her sports goals.

Deer Park’s heartbreaking elimination from the Bowls Victoria premier division finals has stirred up a variety of emotions. The Parkers were pipped at the post in the preliminary final for a second year running. In sporting terms, it does not get much tougher. Last year, the Parkers went down by a shot at the penultimate stage of the season, this year’s exit was similarly painful in a 77-73 loss to Clayton at the Lalor Bowling Club on Saturday. Parkers’ president Neil Cromie was shattered with the result, but acknowledged his side’s incredible feat to make it to two consecutive preliminary finals straight after being promoted. “It is hard to swallow,” Cromie said. “On the other hand, I’m also extremely proud of them. “No club in history has ever made two preliminary finals in their first two years of premier league. “We’ve achieved something that no one has achieved before.” In a closely fought game, one blowout rink cost Deer Park dearly in the preliminary final. James Pearce was the Parkers’ best rink on the day, winning 22-15. Brett Mahoney had a 17-all tie, while Aaron Wood was edged out 20-18. A see-sawing game eventually fell Clayton’s way after Chris Ball’s rink went down 25-16 to Clayton’s New Zealand international Ali Forsyth. “We were slightly in front early, halfway mark scores were level and they got in front and we chased all the way,” Cromie said. “They converted a couple of big heads that made a different in the end. “No one gave it up and that’s the main thing.” It was off the greens where Deer Park’s players made Cromie the proudest. The Parkers players wore black armbands following the tragic events in Christchurch last week.
