Matildas bid by council Brimbank could become home to one of Australia’s most successful and popular sports teams, with the council putting its hand up to become the Matildas’ home base. Brimbank is one of seven municipalities vying for the facility, a $60 million to $80 million elite training base, for the national women’s soccer side – ranked sixth in the world and heading to the World Cup in France in June. Casey, Maroondah, Maribyrnong, Darebin and Shepparton have also expressed an interest, as has LaTrobe University’s Bundoora campus. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve confirmed Brimbank’s interest. “Brimbank council has thrown its hat in the ring,” Cr Congreve said. “We’ve submitted our expression of interest to Football Victoria to be considered for this amazing development … now we’re keen to get a better understanding of the project requirements, parameters and timelines.” Football Victoria’s proposal to build the elite facility in Melbourne has the backing of Football Federation Australia and could include a number of pitches, administration headquarters and a stadium with a capacity of up to 5000. Football Victoria president Kimon Taliadoros said the project would be a huge investment in the women’s game. “It’s an exciting initiative for the women’s game in Australia and would serve to inspire generations of female footballers who dream of following in the steps of their heroes”, he said. “Certainly, a dedicated facility would

go a long way towards helping Victorian football meet our stated objective of 50:50 gender participation by 2027.” The president of the highest ranked women’s side in Brimbank, Eric Psarianos of Calder United, said bringing this facility to the area could revolutionise the game in the west. “If Brimbank was able to pull off a coup and get this it would be fantastic,” he said. “Female football and junior participation numbers are going through the roof and Brimbank is one of those councils that is really on the front foot with it.

- Kimon Paliadoros “To have this facility so close to home, and have the girls aspire themselves to get to that level, would be a game changer.” Mr Psarianos said Calder United’s Keilor Park home base was a potential candidate for the Matildas’ facility, but no formal talks had taken place. “I’ve had some very unofficial-type talks with council about the future of Calder and what we aspire to be,” he said. “One of those things would be to have facilities that the girls can call their own and be at a standard where they can continue down the elite pathway.” Football Victoria will select a shortlist of potential partners, with hopes of the facility being completed before the 2023 World Cup, for which Australia is bidding.

Teen an artful dodger When Fiona Nguyen accepted an invitation to play in social dodgeball, she never envisaged it would open a world of possibilities. The year 12 Braybrook student has been training with the Australian women’s dodgeball team and last week made her way to Canberra to take part in a national camp. It’s a remarkable journey that began with a chance phone call. “My friends needed a girl to come and play in their social league,” she said. “It was fun and scary … but it really grew from there.” She said her goal this year was to make the Australian side for the world championships. “I still can’t believe to this day that dodgeball has become such a big part of my life.” Tate Papworth

Hunt for Sunshine attackers By Tate Papworth Taskforce Wayward has taken over the investigation into a series of assaults and robberies in Sunshine earlier this month. year as part of a new approach to working with youth offenders considered at high risk of re-offending. It closely monitored “high-risk” youths – such as those who have committed aggravated burglaries and home invasions – from areas including Wyndham, Melton, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong.

Police are searching for a group of up to 15 male offenders, aged between 14 to 20, following the violent rampage in Sunshine on Saturday, March 2. In the first incident, a 35-year-old man walking along Hertford Street about 11.25pm was assaulted and robbed. Shortly after, in Kennedy Street, two teenage boys were assaulted and robbed. All three victims were taken to hospital but have since been released. A 13-year-old girl and a 13-year-old Melton boy were also confronted by a group on

Kennedy Street. The boy was assaulted and robbed. A 14-year-old girl was later assaulted with a stick and robbed. St Albans house condemned A massive fire last weekend is the death knell for a condemned St Albans property. Permits have been issued to demolish the abandoned house at 301 Main Road East after fire tore through it about 5pm on Saturday, March 2. The weatherboard property is known to be frequented by squatters and has been plagued by fires and overdoses for several years. Brimbank council has received 16 complaints about the property since 2009. City development director Kelvin Walsh last week said enough was enough.

“Building permits have now been issued by a private building surveyor to demolish the building,” he said. “Since 2009, council has received 16 complaints about this property. Council has investigated each complaint and issued notices to the owner. “Where these notices weren’t complied with and where we could, council has arranged for contractors to carry out these works at a cost to the owner. “This has included installing temporary fencing to restrict access.”

About 24 firefighers responded to the March 2 fire after multiple calls that a person was still in the house. Crews battled thick smoke to search the building. One man sustained burns and was transferred into the care of paramedics. The fire was brought under control in less than 17 minutes, however firefighters had to undergo decontamination procedures to ensure their safety after fears the building contained asbestos. The company at the centre of a recycling crisis which has resulted in tonnes of kerbside recycling being sent to landfill in recent weeks has been charged over a blaze at it’s Coolaroo plant. The Environment Protection Authority last week charged SKM Recycling and its director over the July, 2017 fire, which burned for 11 days. EPA chief executive Cathy Wilkinson said the company and its director have been charged with relevant offences under the Environment Protection Act. She declined to comment further as the matter is now before the courts. The charges come as the closure of SKM Recycling’s Coolaroo and Laverton North plants enters its fourth week. The EPA banned SKM from accepting waste at both sites on February 15, amid concerns stockpiles of waste at the plants were a fire hazard. As a result, Brimbank’s kerbside recycling waste has been sent to landfill. Brimbank infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside initially expected SKM to be able to resume operations “within a matter of days”. “Council is still waiting to hear when SKM will be able to recommence accepting recyclable material, subject to achieving EPA site condition compliance,” Mr Whiteside said last week. “Council understands SKM has made substantial progress towards achieving compliance, and as soon as council receives notice from the EPA that the site is able to accept recyclable material, we will recommence sending recyclables to SKM immediately.” Tate Papworth

Family anger over 11-hour wait By Tate Papworth Ron Baldacchino’s family say he’s lucky to be alive after he was forced to endure a gruelling 11-hour wait to see a doctor at Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department. The 69-year-old was taken to the hospital at 2am on Sunday, March 3, suffering acute appendicitis. He waited until 1pm to see a doctor. Mr Baldacchino’s daughter, Amy Montague, said the St Albans family grew more and more frustrated as other patients were prioritised. “His pain and fever were not considered life threatening enough to prioritise him,”

Ms Montague said. “We sat in frustration as the waiting room repeatedly filled, emptied, filled and emptied again.”

It then took a further two hours before a CT scan was done and a diagnosis made, resulting in Mr Baldacchino being transferred to a ward and into surgery six hours later. His family believe the wait turned what should have been a simple keyhole procedure into a potentially life-threatening situation. “His appendix completely died,” Ms Montague said. “When the tissue dies it fills with pus and that spread … causing infection.” The family plans to draft a letter of complaint to be sent to Health Minister Jenny Mikakos. Western Health executive director operations Natasha Toohey said the wait times were unavoidable during peak periods.

“Western Health would like to apologise to any patients who have experienced extended waiting times in our emergency departments,” she said. However, she said the hospital will soon be better placed to deal with demand when the hospital redevelopments were completed. Patients presenting at Sunshine Hospital face some of the longest wait times in the country. According to the federal government’s MyHospitals website 69 per cent of emergency patients (those requiring treatment within 10 minutes) were treated within 10 minutes of arrival, compared to the national peer group performance of 77 per cent for 2017-18.

Festival fun kicks off A celebration of sport and community will be the focus of a festival later this month. The inaugural I Love Albion Festival will be held at J.R. Parsons Reserve on Saturday, March 30. Event organiser Emmet Monaghan said the festival would provide entertainment and fun for all. “All the local sporting clubs will be there on the day with come and try activities and there’ll also be Western Bulldogs clinics, inflatables, mascots and player appearances,” he said. “We’ve also got a big inflatable park, sport and non-sport activities including camel rides, 10 food trucks, three craft beer booths and market stalls.” It promises to be a big event, but Mr Monaghan said it didn’t start off that way.

“A while ago we decided, as the Albion Football Club, to play a bigger role in the community,” he said. “So we decided on this event, which was going to be AFL-focused. “But after some consultation, we decided to broaden the event and offer sports like baseball and cricket.” Mr Monaghan said he was hoping for a big turnout to ensure the event continues. “We don’t really know what numbers to expect,” he said. “We’d love it if everyone in Brimbank came down, but we’d be really happy with 3000. “We’ve had some generous sponsors so almost everything is free.” The festival will run from 11am-4pm. Youth unemployment sky high By Ewen McRae Youth unemployment in Melbourne’s west is among the highest in the country, according to new data. A report from the Brotherhood of St Lawrence, which analysed unemployment data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, showed the Western Melbourne region had an unemployment rate of 15.5 per cent among 15 to 24 year-olds. This was well above the national average of 11.2 per cent, and was the 15th worst

performing region in Australia. While the majority of regions on the list were from regional areas, Melbourne’s west had the third highest youth unemployment rate for a metropolitan region, just behind Hobart (16.9 per cent) and North-West Perth (16.7 per cent). The Brotherhood’s executive director, Conny Lenneberg, said the data dispelled myths about young people in the community, and called for more action to address high unemployment. “These figures belie stereotypes about young people,” Ms Lenneberg said. “We know from our research and the experience of our services

that many young people are doing it tough. Yet young people are too often depicted in simplistic terms of consumers of overpriced smashed-avocado toast with a fascination for selfies, and that’s plain wrong. “We remain especially concerned at how young people without qualifications and skills or family networks are tracking in this rapidly changing economic and social environment. “To secure the future labour force and create opportunities for decent work, we need structural solutions that drill down to local job markets and infrastructure challenges.”

Brimbank council adopted a youth jobs strategy in October, 2018, to help alleviate unemployment in the municipality and create more job opportunities. It was developed in partnership with young people across Brimbank, with then-mayor Margaret Giudice saying it was a crucial strategy for Brimbank’s future. “Disturbing Australian Bureau of Statistics [2016 Census] figures indicate Brimbank is well above the state average, with more than 2900 young people living here experiencing unemployment,” Cr Giudice said.

Keilor steps back in time Historic Harrick’s Cottage will be open to the public later this month in a celebration of Keilor. The Keilor Historical Society will be hosting its annual open day at the cottage, with president Susan Jennison enthused about what visitors will be offered. “This year we’ll have three exhibitions on show,” she said. “We’ll have banners telling the story of [Keilor pioneer] William Taylor … and we’ll also have a series of photographs on life in Keilor Village.” There’ll also be activities to get creative juices flowing. “We’ve created colouring books featuring Keilor icons which can be enjoyed by both kids and adults,” Ms Jennison said. “We’ve featured sites such as the Maribynong River, the Keilor Hotel and Overnewton Castle.”

Visitors will be invited to take a look around the historic cottage which was built in the early 1860s. Harrick’s Cottage is in its own right significant to Keilor because of its association with James Harrick, a councillor of long standing on Keilor Shire Council from 1898 to 1910. It’s also significant because of its links with the sub-division and agricultural settlement of the Keilor region. The open day will be held on Saturday, March 23, from noon-4pm at the cottage, which is located on Harrick Road, Keilor Park. Entry will be by a gold coin donation and afternoon tea will be provided. Hit-run search

A 50-year-old St Albans man was taken to hospital with serious injuries following a hit-run collision in Albanvale last week. Police have been told the man was crossing Oakwood Road at Kardinia Drive about 9.30pm on March 3 when he was hit by a black Nissan Skyline travelling north on Oakwood Road. Witnesses have told police the Nissan stopped for a moment before driving off and heading onto Cromwell Road. Police believe that the Nissan may have sustained damage to the front left of the vehicle and passenger side mirror. Mosque opens up The Australian-Bosnian Islamic Centre in Deer Park will open its doors this weekend, with the broader community invited to visit and learn. As part of Victorian Mosque Open Day on March 17, the Mosque will be open from 10am to 4pm for locals to explore, take part in activities and speak to the imam and other mosque members. Imam Muhamed Didic said the event was for anyone curious about the Muslim faith. “This event is most important to us,” Imam Didic said. “We want to show our neighbours and wider society our religious traditions and culture, because it is important that we can present our values through the mosque. “Unfortunately, many people see Islam through their own prisms, but my suggestion

Brimbank property ‘well placed’ By Ewen McRae Property prices in Melbourne’s west continue to fall, according to new data. New figures from property analyst Corelogic show that house prices across the west fell by 1.2 per cent in the past month, with a 7.2 per cent fall across the past 12 months. But Brimbank is well placed to bounce back, according to Douglas Kay agent Peter Kay. “There’s still a lot of demand in Brimbank,” Mr Kay said.

“The key to vendors achieving successful sales is just to price the property correctly. The prices of 2017 and 2018 have definitely gone, and looking back on it feels like the last two years have been an illusion. “It’s key for sellers to understand that that

boom time in the property market will go down historically as most likely a once off. “This year we’ve explained to clients that there needs to be a real motivation to sell.” Mr Kay said he believed the worst of the property price decline, which has seen prices fall nationally by 6.3 per cent in the past year, was over for Brimbank. “The market has already adjusted a lot since last year,” he said. “We’re seeing the properties that are priced with this adjustment still have high demand.

“I think that given we have reduced the prices, and people are still entering the market, and given that we’re in a comfortable position of not being above the average price in Melbourne and our proximity to the city is still very close, I think we’ll be immune from any further reductions. “With more properties coming on the market that are well priced, natural competition will kick back into place. “I think we will be one of the regions set for capital growth sooner rather than later.”

Gym win for parents A St Albans Primary School is aiming to create a healthier community – and it’s spreading the message to parents first. As part of Active April, St Albans Meadows Primary School is encouraging its parents to adopt a healthy lifestyle as a way of teaching their pupils about the benefits of regular exercise and good food. The school has had a gym for the past five years for parents to use during school hours. Principal Stephen Crockford said the gym’s success was a feather in the school’s cap. “We try to promote an active lifestyle to the kids all the time, but this gym has been a hit with the parents,” Mr Crockford said. “We’re trying to change the culture of our parents to become role models to their children … we’ve got a steady group of parents who are using it regularly and getting fit. There’s now a little parent group with ideas of doing aerobic classes or starting a walking club, so we’re looking at things from a different perspective.”

Mr Crockford said giving parents autonomy over what they wanted to get out of the gym was the key to its success and educating the students to stay active. “It’s got to be an organic process, where the parents grow it and own it and we support it,” he said. “The response has been really good … we have a lot of parents that will drop the kids off and then do a workout, which is great. “We had one mum who lost about 30 kilograms. She said this gym basically saved her life, so that’s fantastic feedback to hear.” Ewen McRae

VU appoints Bracks as chancellor By Benjamin Millar Former Victorian Premier Steve Bracks has been named as the next chancellor of Victoria University. Current Chancellor George Pappas will step down from the role he has held for almost a decade at the end of this year. Deputy Chancellors Wayne Kayler-Thomson and Gaye Hamilton will temporarily fill the role next year for six months each before Mr Bracks takes up his appointment at the start of 2021. Mr Bracks was elected to Parliament in the

seat of Williamstown in 1994, rising through the ranks to take on Labor Party leadership and become the Victorian premier in 1999 – a role he held until 2007. He said he was honoured to be selected as the sixth chancellor at VU, as it expands to meet demand in the western suburbs of Melbourne. “The history of the university is extremely important, it’s a university that grew out of Melbourne’s west,” he said. “Increasingly there is going to be greater demand for the university, and it’s really about framing for this and assisting young people to give them good opportunities.”

Mr Bracks said it was vital the federal government did not lose sight of the importance of adequately funding tertiary education and institutions such as VU. “Government funding is extremely important, investment in education is investment in the capital capacity of the country,” he said. Mr Bracks has recently been serving as chair of the VU-led West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA), a job-focused collaboration of local governments, businesses and the community. WoMEDA focuses on creating high-skills

job clusters in suburbs such as Footscray, Sunshine and Werribee. Mr Bracks said Victoria University is well placed to ensure graduates can make the most of the growing opportunities across a range of sectors in the area including health and allied services. Mr Bracks cited his experience running the second biggest state in the country and background in education as useful preparation for the role. “I am genuinely excited about taking up the role of chancellor and having an opportunity to shape the future of VU.”

Learning from litter wall A colourful creation is helping spread a poignant message in Sunshine. A mural adorning a wall opposite Sunshine station features native animals surrounded by litter. Friends of Kororoit Creek president Jessica Gerger said the community group commissioned the artwork to get people thinking about the consequences of litter. “We’re very passionate about litter not ending up in the creek. We really wanted to do something big and to make a statement,” Ms Gerger said. “We told the artists we wanted beautiful animals pushed up against litter with the line ‘Rubbish on the street ends up in the creek’ because a lot of people don’t make that connection. “Every time there’s a big rain, so much junk gets washed up and it has a bad affect on the wildlife and water quality.”

Ms Gerger said the location had been chosen to maximise impact. “We regularly hold clean-ups in this area as part of the ‘Love your station” day … and the owner of the building was really open to the idea.” The mural was created by artists Seb and AJ over a two-day period. Seb said the duo enjoyed the creative flexibility. “We had our brief about the animals, litter and slogan, but we were able to create it in our own way. “We didn’t really draw up a plan, we just arrived on the day and used the wall and it’s colours.” The friends group received a Brimbank City Council litter blitz grant which was used for the mural and bin wraps and cigarette butt bins. Seniors cash worth a workout By Tate Papworth Brimbank senior citizens have been delivered a big win that is tipped to generate greater health and wellbeing outcomes. The boost comes from a $1.8 million grant to Australian Multicultural Community Services (AMCS). The organisation’s chief executive, Elizabeth Drozd, said the federal government funding, which is provided through Sport Australia’s Move It AUS – Better Ageing grant program, would be a massive win for Brimbank.

“Brimbank is one of the most multicultural communities in Melbourne and we are most pleased to be able to work with Brimbank seniors to increase physical activities participation,” Ms Drozd said. “We have lots of interesting activities planned for the next

two years including dancing, which we know is particularly popular with the Italian, Greek, Hungarian, Filipino and Polish seniors.” Ms Drozd said the funding would allow AMCS to improve the lives of older Australians through its Moving for Life – The Way I Like It program. She said the program was designed to raise physical activity of Australians aged 65 and above. “Our application was one of over 250 submitted … I see this success as a very strong endorsement of our work,” she said.

As part of the Moving for Life – The Way I Like It program, AMCS will facilitate access to regular physical activity through structured, community activities. The organisation plans to improve the skills of staff responsible for delivering age-appropriate services to seniors. Australian Multicultural Community Services provides support services to seniors to help them to continue to live at home and maintain their independence. The organisation has been working with multicultural communities for more than 35 years.

School values input Democracy was in action at Mackellar Primary School last week, as the school community came together to decide on their new core values. Students and teachers narrowed their choices for the new values down to a top 10, with the community then able to vote to determine what their school valued most. Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins was on hand to cast her votes – for respect, resilience and creativity – and said it was a great initiative. “I think to be able to vote for your school values is a really fantastic way of engaging the whole parent community in particular into saying what vision they want for the school,” Ms Hutchins said. “I think, for me, if you have a lot of respect at your school then you will see the place running well, it’s a core fundamental value that I try to uphold. Resilience is also important because you want your kids to move up to high

school with as much resilience as possible, and creativity, because I’ve seen some amazing programs come out of this place because of innovation, so I think that’s really important. “The other great thing is these students learn the value of voting at an early age.” Student wellbeing co-ordinator Tanya Lindsay-Clark said it was important the whole community had their say in such a prominent part of the school’s image. “We work in partnership with the parents, so it’s important that we share values and all have an active say in what we use,” she said. “Everything will come back to these values, we’ll have them up around the school, and it’s more meaningful if the students and community have their say.” The top three values will be announced in the coming weeks. Drug dealer loses bid to appeal

By Goya Dmytryshchak Former Australian kickboxing champion Dragan ‘Machine Gun Charlie’ Arnautovic has lost his bid to appeal a 10-year jail term for drug trafficking. The 56-year-old was found guilty by a County Court jury of trafficking a commercial quantity of heroin and trafficking methylamphetamine between November 9 and December 17, 2016. He was sentenced last June to a non-parole period of eight years in prison. The Melton West resident and gym owner had sold drugs to covert police at Laverton and Williamstown. Drugs were also found at his home and underneath his mother’s house in St Albans. In total, police recovered about $374,000 worth of drugs. Arnautovic, who has spent about 24 years in custody since 1990, committed his latest offences while on parole for similar offences. The sentencing judge stated that in light of Arnautovic’s three prior substantial terms of imprisonment for similar offences, deterrence, denunciation and protection of the community were important considerations. Arnautovic’s appeal was based on claims that he shouldn’t have been charged for two different drugs when they had been found simultaneously. However, Court of Appeal justices Emilios Kyrou and Lesley Taylor struck out his bid to appeal.

On February 22, 2019, Maddisyn FALZON failed to appear on bail at the Sunshine Magistrates Court. Warrants were issued for her arrest for offences including theft of motor vehicle, handling stolen goods, burglary and careless driving. Police are seeking information as to FALZON’s current whereabouts.

Tunnel work leaves ‘death trap’ By Goya Dmytryshchak A Brooklyn mother has labelled Millers Road “an emerging pedestrian death trap” due to West Gate Tunnel works. Alexia Boland Herrick said she feared pedestrians could be hurt or killed at “risky and unsafe” crossing points where Millers Road intersected with Paringa Road and Primula Avenue. She said tunnel works had resulted in dangerous diversions forcing pedestrians onto the road. “For anyone that’s got a walking stick, a wheelchair or a pram or anything like that, it’s just so super dangerous,” Ms Boland Herrick said.

“The only way I could get across … was by actually stepping onto the road and by drivers actually stopping … because there was no way to get across. “This major poor planning error even goes as far as to invite local pedestrians to somehow divert to other closed pathways, leaving them effectively stranded in the process.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council had written to the West Gate Tunnel contractors, CPB John Holland, after learning of Ms Boland Herrick’s concerns and backed her call for urgent action. “We are hopeful that these current issues will be actioned immediately and will keep monitoring conditions,” he said.

West Gate Tunnel Project spokeswoman Kim Payne urged people to contact them if they saw issues that needed to be addressed. “During construction there will be changes to how people move about and we will make sure they are safe and as easy to use as possible,” she said. “We recognise there may be times of inconvenience during construction and we thank people for their patience.”

Lions fundraiser to tackle childhood cancer The Taylors Lakes Lions Club is hosting a night of music, laughter and fun – all in the name of a good cause. The second annual Kids Cancer Research Gala fundraising evening will be held on Saturday, May 25 at the Taylors Lakes Hotel. Lions club president Phil Clinkaberry is hoping to raise more than last year’s total. “Our first event last year was a big success. We had over 80 people attend and raised about $5000,” he said. “This year, we’re aiming for 150 people to attend and to beat our total.” The night will include live entertainment, a live auction and a silent auction. Mr Clinkaberry said cover band Times Like These has donated its services and will keep the crowd entertained and the dance floor filled for the entire night. All funds raised will go to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation (ALCCRF). “We thought that since we’re a Lions Club, it would be appropriate to support a Lions charity,” he said. “The good thing about this is that all the money will go towards the cause and not things like admin.” The ALCCRF provides funding to childhood cancer research conducted right across Australia, which specifically targets improved survival rates. Tickets for the fundraiser are $60 and include a two course meal. Patrons are encouraged to bring $2 coins for the coin roll and some extra funds to participate in other aspects of the night. Neighbours win two-storey fight By Tate Papworth Albion residents have had a victory in their fight to stop an “inappropriate” development going ahead. Brimbank council has rejected the application for a permit to develop nine double-storey dwellings across 52, 54 and 56 Selwyn Street. The council said the proposal did not respect neighbourhood character and would be a case of over-development. Neighbouring resident Samantha Fitzgerald said commonsense had prevailed.

“This was quite personal to us – we live right behind the proposed development, so aside from the points brought up in the rejection notice, we have all our children’s bedroooms along the side where the rear of the nine proposed properties would be,” she said. “We bought our property 18 months ago knowing the houses were for sale and that a development would replace them, but never in our lives did we expect there to be nine double-storey dwellings put there. “Council gave us permit to put a pool in our backyard, but with rear-facing windows

looking down right over the backyard, it’s hardly a private place to lay down and relax, especially when our daughters become teenagers.” Ms Fitzgerald suspects it won’t be the last residents hear of the situation. “We know we probably have a VCAT fight on our hands,” she said. “We’re estimating that’s where they’ll take it, unless they’re reasonable about points. We’re fairly confident we’ll prevail through VCAT – as residents and council we need to come together to make sure commonsense prevails.”

The council noted the location of parking was an issue not addressed in the planning application. Ms Fitzgerald said the safety of residents was a major concern. “Our objections weren’t unreasonable – this was going to create further traffic problems,” she said. “There’s lots of children walking through the area and a lot of young families around. “It’s already a narrow street in parts, so the extra traffic and lack of parking spaces is a real safety concern.”

Hitting the right note Mofiz Ul Haq is passionate about being creative, making music and volunteering in the west. The 22-year-old Sunshine resident, who is studying a bachelor of songwriting and music production, recently released his first EP under the pseudonym Vertex. Haq said the EP was “highly inspired” by his partner, whom he has been dating for eight years. The EP is titled 2555, in honour of the number of days they had spent together, by their seventh anniversary. “It is hard to describe my music style, but I would say it’s like electronic jazzy funk-pop, with different elements of this and that,” he said. Since moving to Australia from Dubai at the age of 20, Haq said he has also started volunteering in the western suburbs. He said that his partner, a prolific volunteer herself, introduced him to the Centre for Multicultural

Youth (CMY) not long after he arrived in Australia. At CMY, along with 10 other young people, he created a social media campaign called #GO4IT. Haq said the campaign had reached more than 6000 people online, and that this positive experience inspired him to volunteer more, including at a Maribyrnong youth centre, on the Brimbank Youth Events Committee and with the Wyndham-based eYouth Project. “Volunteering in the community, I feel a step closer to achieving my goals.” Alesha Capone

I’m sure local residents are as pleased as I am with the opening of the Westwood Drive road and bridge in December last year. Providing an important connection for community, access to existing local facilities, and a vital link across our municipality, this $8.7 million project has seen the redirection of around 10,000 vehicles from Caroline Springs Boulevard and Gourlay Road, and cuts commuting time in those areas. It’s also pleasing to see the three metrewide walking, running and cycling path being used so frequently, both by local commuters and for leisure activities. Speaking of our local roads, and following recent Councillor Budget discussions, I will be advocating for the replacement of roundabouts with signalised intersection and pedestrian crossings along Caroline Springs Boulevard, particularly on the corner of Rockbank Middle Road.

I believe it’s vital to make this busy area safer for both road users and pedestrians. Melton City Council places great value on residents being able to access high quality sporting and recreation facilities within the municipality, so it’s wonderful to report that the construction of the City Vista Sports Precinct, a $13 million project to promote a more active lifestyle, is progressing well. MY bRiMbAnK Mark Gale loves St Albans. His business, vintage bicyle emporium Saint Side, has become an iconic symbol of Brimbank. He chats with Tate Papworth.

I’ve not only got the business based here, but I also grew up in St Albans. I’ve spent all of my 36 years out here. Most of the guys involved in the business are the same – we love reminiscing. What is it you love so much about the area? There’s a strong sense of camaraderie among everyone. It’s not too far away from the city, but it’s not too close either. I was a street kid – I spent my time playing outside with friends in an era before video games. We all hung out together and there’s always been a real community feel. What do you think could be improved? If you’d asked me that 10 years ago, I’d have said nothing – and I still believe that to be

true today. The infrastructure is constantly improving and the money seems to be going to where we need it. Tell us about Saint Side. We actually started out selling vintage gear and bikes, but it’s grown a bit since then. We still specialise in vintage bikes, but we’ve got apparel now, too. And that came about by chance? Yeah, we actually created Saint Side T-shirts so we would have a uniform and people loved them. So we started selling them and it went from there. Today we have a whole heap of things, ranging from eskys to the shirts. It’s not really a fashion item, but more a reflection of people being proud of where they come from and wanting to represent the area.

Sunshine town clerk, Mr Bill Deutschmann, has lashed out at the Health Commission for major cut-backs in subsidies for infant welfare centres and services in Sunshine. Last week Mr Deutschmann said that due to the cut-backs, the council will probably be forced to curtail proposed improvements in the infant welfare service.

The State Government has finally allocated $330,000 to tame two of our most treacherous traffic bottlenecks. A $210,000 roundabout will be constructed where Main Rd East meets Sunshine Ave in St Albans.

The Sunshine Hospital has moved to allay fears that elderly residents in Brimbank would miss out on specialist care as a result of hospital bed closures. Hospital spokeswoman Ms Belinda Campe has denied State Opposition claims the closure of a 30-bed transitional ward would spell the death-knell for specialised care for older people in the west.

A leading academic says the trend of crimes against Indian international students in Brimbank is not unique to race or place. Other countries have addressed the problem Brimbank is now experiencing, Monash University’s professor of international business Chris Nyland said. Professor Nyland is due to publish a book about the security of international students in Australia.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is in for the thrill of the grill 8Street is a new indoor arcade of Asian eateries – it’s right under the big ferris wheel. So new is it, we’re here on opening day for the lot of them. Or, rather, it’s opening day for all the businesses, but we’re here for just one – the purveyor of Philippines eats known as GJ’s Grill. We’ve tried – once – the original GJ’s in Franklin Street, near Vic Market, with OK if not memorable results. Very long-time readers will know we have a certain, um, ambivalence about Filipino food. But we’re definitely up for trying the new GJ’s because we’re in the expert hands of CTS pal Jacqui, hubby Wes and their kids. They’re big GJ’s fans, and besides, it’s been way too long since we’ve enjoyed a catch-up. And we’re heartened by the knowledge the menu is all about grilled/roast meats and nothing at all about the braises and so on that often fill bain maries in Filipino eateries. The routine is regulation food court – pay at the counter and wait for your number – and the food is served in cardboard containers. I’m a bit nonplussed that the photos for this story make the food look unlovely and parsimonious. It’s neither – we eat well and affordably. Bennie has the beef talapa with garlic rice ($14.50). Jacqui has warned us the meat will be well done in the Pinoy style. She’s right, but it’s still good eating.

GJ’s Grill Address: 8Street food court, Docklands. With the same garlic rice comes my lechon – crispy skin pork. It’s excellent – and sinfully rich and fatty; quite like classic Chinese roast pork, but without the seasonings. Both our meals are lifted in the zing department by serves of atchara – a liquidish pickle concoction made from grated unripe papaya. We’re powerful hungry, so also get a couple of the classic pork skewers. These are awesome and much more generous than we’ve had in the past, so the $5 each price tag is no problem. The meat is tender, succulent, perfect. It’s too rich for me, but my dining companions also share a serve of another classic – sisig ($19). This is an offalish jumble that is a bit like the topping of an HSP – without the chips! It’s tricky to gauge how GJ’s and its neighbouring 8Street establishments will go at Docklands. But if you’re there anyway, GJ’s is worth checking out for something a little different.

Mr Cooke said home owners looking for the lowest rate should consider holding off locking in their mortgage rate, in case the RBA cuts later this year. “If you’re worried about a rate hike, get

Home owners have been warned to tread with caution when considering whether to lock in their home loan rates after several out-of-cycle rate rises from major and junior banks. Rising mortgage prices come at the same time as experts are starting to suggest the Reserve Bank could move in the opposite direction and cut rates, which could prompt banks to change course and follow suit. In January, NAB increased rates on its owner-occupier principal-and-interest loans by 12 basis points, and also hiked by 16 basis points its owner-occupier interest-only loans, investor principal-and-interest loans and investor interest-only loans. The bank last September announced it would hold its rates steady as long as possible, pledging to restore trust with existing customers, in the wake of hikes ranging from 14 to 16 basis points by rivals Westpac, Commonwealth Bank and ANZ. The move by the major lender follows a string of hikes from second-tier lenders in recent weeks, as the banks face higher funding costs. Some 13 junior lenders have lifted rates on some products by up to 20 basis points since December, including Macquarie Bank, ME Bank and Bank Australia, analysis by comparison platform finder.com.au found. “With the RBA cash rate stagnant and the costs of international borrowing increasing, many banks will increase their lending rates,” Finder insights manager Graham Cooke said. But in a competitive market, other lenders may “seize the opportunity” to get an edge over their rivals and reduce rates, he said. Citi Bank and IMB Bank have

SPORT Sunshine’s season draws to a close Sunshine United was unceremoniously dumped from the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division finals. The Tigers only showed glimpses of their best in a seven-wicket semi-final defeat to Doutta Stars at Buckley Park on Sunday. Nevertheless, the Tigers can be proud of what they produced in their first season in the ultra competitive top flight. The newly promoted Tigers reached the senior division finals at their first crack and made it all the way through to the grand final of the statewide Twenty20 competition. Sunshine United had an innings of frustration with the bat on day one. The scorecard reveals a string of starts for the Tigers, but only one player that went on with it. Opener Scott Dalrymple was excellent, making 41 and playing his opening role to perfection.

Seven other Tigers reached double figures before going out. It left the Tigers yearning for more than their 152 in 70.3 overs. Doutta Stars offered some false hope to Sunshine United at the top of its innings. The Stars found themselves in trouble at 3-1

as Tigers new ball operators Michael Glowacki, with two wickets, and Thomas O’Brien, who claimed the other, had early success. Unfortunately for Sunshine United, that was where the joy ended. Hamish Moore sparked the Stars run chase with 101 not out, while Brenton Parchment went along for the ride with 43 not out. The pair put on an unbroken partnership of 152 to lead the Stars to victory in the 39th over. In the other semi-final, Keilor fell agonisingly short by 35 runs in its chase for Strathmore’s 9-279. The Blues were bowled out in the 72nd over for 244 in an entertaining run chase. Robert Clements (55), Kaushal Lokuarachchi (50) and Finlay Trenouth (47) all looked set to take the game by the scruff of the neck, but could not go on with it for the Blues. Lance Jenkinson

The seconds clash between Hoppers and Werribee went the way of the Hogans Road boys and the Werribee first XI lost to Melton then had to endure top team Caulfield’s struggle against Elsternwick. Caulfield lost by just eight runs which finished Werribee’s season.

georgies look the goods By Lance Jenkinson Caroline Springs George Cross will be riding a wave of momentum when the new Football Victoria state league 1 season kicks off on March 23. The new-look Georgies were ecstatic to advance to the next round of the FFA Cup after a stirring 3-2 extra time third round win over Yarraville Glory at the Paisley Park Soccer Complex on Saturday. Georgies coach Corey Smith could sense enthusiasm and togetherness in the players following the win. “Being a young squad and pretty ambitious, they were absolutely buzzing at the end,” Smith said. “The celebration when we scored the winner and after the game was real good. “They can enjoy that now, but they also understand we’ve got the league coming up, which is really important.” A see-sawing game saw Caroline Springs and Yarraville exchange periods of momentum. Whenever the Georgies felt like they were getting on top in the contest, the Glory would

inevitably hit back. Twice the Georgies took the lead and twice they were reeled back in. “I thought we were the best team by far for the first 20 minutes,” Smith said. “We took the lead, but they got a goal straight back, which was a bit against the run of play at that stage and they had a good period before half-time. “I thought the second half we were slightly the better team once again, scored a goal to make it 2-1 and then they got a second wind, put us under pressure and scored a goal, and then pushed quite a bit towards the end of the 90.” The fresh legs of Caroline Springs’ substitutes proved the difference in the extra time period of 30 minutes. Kobe Kemp, Deng Aguek and James Kemal all had a positive influence when they were brought on. Kemal, who was lively on the wing, stole the headlines with a match-winning goal with eight minutes left in the game. The other positive for Caroline Springs was the performances of new recruits Hugh Undy and Dominic Swinton.

Both Undy, who transferred from Olympia FC Warriors in Tasmania, and Swinton, who joined from Ballarat City, scored on debut. “They were our two starting wingers today,” Smith said. “I thought their tactical understanding was quite strong throughout.” Midfielder Daniel Slovacek showed why he was immediately installed as Caroline Springs captain after crossing from NPL side St Albans Saints. “He was on another level,” Smith said. “I thought he was the best player on the pitch by a fair distance. When the game was in the balance, he was the guy who always stood up.” In other FFA Cup results, Westgate was a big winner, mauling Ballarat 5-0, while North Sunshine Eagles had East Brighton United in the firing line in a 4-1 win. Sydenham Park pipped Mornington 1-0, while Keilor Park beat Peninsula Strikers with the same scoreline. There were defeats for Albion Rovers, outplayed 3-0 by Essendon Royals, and Brimbank Stallions, who lost on penalties to Essendon Royals.

Sunshine overcomes nerves to outplay Williamstown In what turned out to be a nerve-jangling second day’s play, Sunshine found a way to overcome a stubborn Williamstown Imperials in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 semi-final at Dempster Park on Saturday. The Crows took a long time to shake off the typical nervousness and apprehension that faces a batting side chasing a small score in a cut-throat final, but they eventually found a way to win by four wickets. “It was pretty intense cricket to be honest,” Sunshine captain Troy Stone said. “We turned up needing 40 runs to win and it took us 30 overs to get them. “It was good, tough hard cricket from both sides.” Williamstown Imperials were so confident in the pitch that it won the toss and batted. Stone described the deck as batsmen-friendly

and would not have been too fussed if his side was sent in to bat. The Imperials did not cope well at all on the first day though, all out for 85 in 49.4 overs. “The scores don’t tell the story,” Stone said. “It was an absolute road, the wicket, on both days. “It was just good bowling from both sides to be honest.” Stone praised his opening bowlers Josh Michetti and Charith Fernando. Michetti, in particular, was a constant thorn in the side of Williamstown Imperials. He continued his recent strong form with the ball to take 4-21 off 14 overs. Since Christmas, Michetti has taken 10 wickets at 8.2. “He was outstanding,” Stone said. “He’s been under bowled most of the season and I put it on him to open the bowling. “Since then he’s taken a three-for and a

four-for, he’s bowling a consistent line and length, outside off stump, making them play.” Fernando finished with 2-26 off 12 overs. Similar to Michetti, Fernando squeezed the life out of the Williamstown Imperials batsmen. “He’s someone I can turn to and he’ll be very reliable,” Stone said. “He’s averaging under 10 with the ball, which is outstanding.” Sunshine made hard work of its run chase. The Crows scored at a snail-paced 1.54 run per over, taking 56.4 overs to chase down the 86 target. Stone believes the occasion got to some of the batsmen on both sides. “Some guys tend to go in their shells and play a little bit defensive in finals,” he said. “That resulted in a low-scoring game.” Given the small target, Sunshine could afford

to take the shine off the ball and work into its innings. It played into the hands of Crows opener Sam Magnano, who is noted for his incredible patience. Magnano finished with 25 off 138. “He always chews up balls and takes time out of the game,” Stone said. “In that situation, he was outstanding.” Matthew Taaffe was the other Sunshine batsman who provided nuisance value. He finished with 16 not out off 91 balls to guide the Crows to victory. Two late fours from Fernando was the icing on a sweet cake. Sunshine has a chance to make it two flags in two years and standing in its way will be Point Cook. As the Crows finished on top, they will have hosting rights for the grand final. Lance Jenkinson

Sunshine’s season ends By Lance Jenkinson The pain of elimination will stick in the guts of Sunshine Heights players for some time. The Heights bowed out of the premiership race after a five-wicket loss to Point Cook in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 semi-final at Saltwater Reserve on Sunday. “It’s always disappointing to get beaten in a semi-final because you know you’re only one game away from being in the big one,” Heights captain Luke Simpson said. “We got outplayed a little bit and we can’t do much about it now. “We’ve had a good year.” There was optimism surrounding Sunshine Heights heading into the finals. While Point Cook and Sunshine were consistently the two best sides over the course of the summer, the Heights came home strongly and beat the top-two in the new year. Unfortunately for the Heights, they could not produce when it mattered most in the heat of the finals. 54 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 12, 2019

The Heights were behind the eight-ball on day one after posting 141 in 79 overs. A run rate of 1.78 per over, brought about by a tough pitch to bat on and regular falling wickets, was not sufficient enough. “It was pretty hard to bat on,” Simpson said. “We got ourselves into a good position, but we just lost crucial wickets at stages when we didn’t need to lose wickets. “It was really hard to get runs if you were new in and for new batsmen it was hard to score at the rate we needed to score at.” Saman Gonawala (33) and Akat Mayoum (30) provided a solid foundation for Sunshine Heights. A strength of the Heights is its middle order, but they failed to capitalise on starts. Simpson (14), Tim Mahoney (10) and Mohsin Abbas (18) fell at inopportune times. The Heights tail end provided no assistance. “Saman is a class bat and he batted really well and Akat stood up and did a really good job for us,” Simpson said.

“Both of them batted really well, but after that a lot of blokes got a start and just didn’t take hold of it.” Point Cook was aggressive from ball one of its run chase. The Warriors reached the target in the 42nd over, batting at a rate of 3.47 runs per over. Warriors opener Harpreet Singh (55) and youngster Darcy Harmer (36) took the game away from the Heights in a 68-run second wicket partnership. Akon Mawien was the pick of the Sunshine Heights bowlers, finishing with 3-67 off 16 overs. It was Mawien’s last game for the Heights before his move to Melbourne University. Mawien came on the radar of the Premier Cricket team after taking 25 wickets at 16.6 this season. “We’re never going to hold our players back,” Simpson said. “If they want to ply their trade at a higher level, we’ll push them to improve and push them towards that.”

Deer Park will make a return to the Bowls Victoria premier division’s penultimate weekend for a second year running. The Parkers overcame a sluggish start to overrun Bundoora RSL in a 77-70 win on neutral greens in the semi-final at the Yarraville-Footscray Bowling Club on Saturday to book their place in the preliminary final. Parkers president Neil Cromie said his side seems to lift another level when the finals come around. In a worrying sign, Deer Park stalled out of the blocks in the cut-throat clash with Bundoora RSL. The Parkers seemed a little overawed by the occasion and found themselves trailing early. “The first five ends, they came out a lot stronger than we did,” Cromie said. “They really had their game going early.” If there is one trait that Deer Park hangs its hat on, it is its ability to battle through the rough periods. “The players we’ve got are prepared to hang in,” Cromie said. “We stuck with them, hung on, pegged it back and once we hit the lead we slowly increased it to the point where we got about 14 up with not many ends to play.” State player Brett Mahoney steered Deer Park to a memorable victory. Mahoney’s rink, which included new lead Josh Barry, Adam Berry and Ray Morrissey, had a resounding 27-12 win. “He’s a great bowler, a great player,” Cromie said of Mahoney. “He’s going for the state championships to represent the region and he’s in the state squad.” James Pearce, with Wayne Pretty, Samantha Shanahan and Andrew Myers on board, was the Parkers other winning rink, finishing up 17-13. Calder steps it up a level to demolish Senior NTC Calder United caught fire in a scintillating second half to demolish Senior NTC 12-0 in the National Premier League Women’s competition at Knox Regional Football Centre on Saturday. Calder produced an offensive explosion rarely seen as they piled on nine, second-half goals, including six goals in eight crazy minutes from the 70th to the 78th. “It was very one-sided all game,” Calder president Eric Psarianos said. “We just went into another gear.” Calder United’s defensive unit was barely tested in the first half. Three Calder goals in 10 minutes from the eighth to the 18th from Catherine Zimmerman, Melissa Taranto and Alycia Eicke killed off the game as a contest. The scoring dried up a little as the undermanned Senior NTC showed some resistance towards the back end of the first half. However, any positives for Senior NTC going into the break were gone in the second half. Calder’s constant pressure forced the Senior

NTC defence to crack and then there was no stopping Calder from doing as it pleased. Aleksandra Sinclair bookended an incredible spurt of nine goals in 33 minutes. Sinclair scored in the 51st and 84th minutes, finishing with a double after a fine day on the front line. In between Sinclair’s goals, Zimmerman completed her hat-trick, netting in the 64th and 71st minutes. Substitute Raquel Deralas got in on the act in the 70th, the first of that incredible onslaught of six goals in eight minutes from Calder. Rachel Binning scored in the 74th, while captain Emma Robers goaled in the 75th. Emily Hulbert got a quick fire double in the 75th and 78th minutes. It was a ruthless performance from a Calder side that is top of the table with three wins from three, including three clean sheets and a goal difference of 18+. While the victory was pleasing for Calder, Psarianos holds concerns for the Senior NTC,

the home of some of the most talented teenage players in the state. Senior NTC was not at full strength but blowing an elite team off the park by 12 goals is not a good look, nor does it help player development. “They were missing three or four girls who were away with the Young Matildas, so they were very undermanned, but they almost gave up in the end,” Psarianos said. “It was demoralising for some of their younger girls and I hate seeing that, but it’s not our responsibility. “Hopefully the people running the program will be able to set them straight.” Calder will face a much tougher test when third-placed Box Hill United visits Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Knights kick into gear By Lance Jenkinson Melbourne Knights coach Micky Colina has declared his side “fear no one” after its upset 2-0 win over Bentleigh Greens in the National Premier League. The Knights have burst out of the gates this season with three wins from four starts to sit pretty in third spot. This win was the pick of the bunch so far as the Knights brought down the previously undefeated top-of-the-ladder Greens at Knights Stadium on Friday night. “We respect Bentleigh Greens, they’re one of the best NPL sides in the country, there’s no doubt about that, but at the end of the day we fear no one,” Colina said. “The boys were great, they were honest, they worked hard and it’s a reflection on how they’ve been since day one.” Melbourne Knights withstood an early threat from the Greens, but once they found their own way to goal, there was no turning back. Hamish Watson broke the deadlock just before half-time to give the Knights a crucial one-goal lead at the break. Watson was played through by Anthony Duzel, who burst into the front third after intercepting a loose pass in the midfield. “It was a relatively even affair in the first half so it was nice to go in at one-nil,” Colina said. Melbourne Knights grew in confidence the longer the game went on. The Greens left themselves stretched at the back in search of an equaliser. In the 72nd minute, it was Watson who found the back of the net again for the Knights. Similar to his first goal, Watson was the beneficiary of some fine Knights pressing in the midfield. This time it was Tomislav Uskok who pounced on the turnover and served up a delightful through ball to Watson, who needed no second invitation to power the ball low and hard for his second goal. “He definitely gives us the outlet that every team strives for in the top third,” Colina said. “Both of his goals were the last piece of two well-anticipated moments by the team.” Colina believes the Melbourne Knights are on the right track. He conceded it was too early to assess where the Knights fit into the pecking order, but he is pleased to have seen improvement on a game-by-game basis. “They went away [the previous round] and lost to Heidelberg, which was a tough one to swallow because we made a couple of errors and got punished, but we learnt a lot from that game and to show the character to bounce back against a side like Bentleigh was great,” he said. Live wire forward Joseph Monek has signed, sealed and delivered three points for the St Albans Saints. A Monek-inspired Saints came from behind in a frenetic final five minutes to overrun Moreland Zebras 2-1 in the National Premier League 2 west at Churchill Reserve on Sunday. The victory moves the Saints back up to third spot on the ladder, improving to seven points from four games. It was looking for all money that St Albans would end the match empty-handed when Moreland broke a 70-minute deadlock with a well worked set piece that ended with a headed goal from Jacob Williams. But the Saints produced a spirited finish to reap all three points. Monek had his fingerprints all over the Saints equaliser. Not only did he draw a clear cut penalty after moving behind the defence and getting taken down from behind, he stepped up to convert from the spot with a powerful shot to the right of a diving goalkeeper. Following the equaliser, St Albans maintained its attacking mentality and found a winner though a headed goal from Anthony Katiforis in second half stoppage time. The assist from the free kick came from none other than Monek, who drew the free kick in the first place. St Albans hosts Brunswick City at Churchill Reserve on Sunday.
