A taste of Sunshine A cultural food journey awaits with the return of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival to Sunshine this year. Now in its third year, Sunshine Food Fever promises to showcase the best the suburb has to offer. Violent gang rampage By Tate Papworth Three people were taken to hospital in serious conditions after a gang of up to 15 went on a violent rampage through Sunshine on Saturday night. Police have been told the violent spree began about 11.25pm when a group of 10 to 15 males set upon a 35-year-old Braybrook man who was walking along Hertford Street. The group searched his pockets and made demands for his wallet before they were scared

off by local residents. The Braybrook man was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police believe the same group carried out a series of vicious assaults on Kennedy Street, including that of a 16-year-old Sunshine boy who was taken to hospital in a critical condition. His friend, a 15-year-old Melton boy, came to his aid but was also assaulted and had his keys and phone stolen. He was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries.

A 13-year-old Melton girl and a 13-year-old Melton boy were also confronted by the group on Kennedy Street. The boy was assaulted and suffered minor injuries. At the intersection of Kennedy Street and Devonshire Road, the group used a stick to assault a 14-year-old Corio girl. She was searched for valuables and her phone was stolen. Police believe the group continued its destruction, throwing a rock through the rear

passenger window of a car parked in the street. The offenders, all male, are described as being of African appearance and aged between 14 and 20 years of age. Police are continuing to investigate the sequence of events. No arrests had been made at the time of publishing. Former mayor calls for leak probe By Tate Papworth Former Brimbank mayor John Hedditch has called for an independent investigation following the leaking in January of information surrounding a councillor conduct panel hearing. In a letter to Star Weekly Weekly, Cr Hedditch said the local government councillor conduct panel’s dismissal of all 13 allegations of serious misconduct and misconduct against him, brought a “very damaging two-year process to a welcome end”.

But Cr Hedditch said he thought a thorough investigation into the leaking of confidential information was imperative. “I believe the subsequent leaking of serious confidential and untested allegations to the local media requires a thorough, independent investigation,” he said. “Only a very small number of people had access to the information. “The intent of those leaking these serious allegations to the media prior to the panel hearing was to publicly damage my reputation. That personal reputational damage has occurred despite the serious allegations being

dismissed – mud sticks. It has impacted my family and I. “As well, our very good council has taken an unnecessary reputational hit in recent front-page headlines. “For Brimbank council to not now investigate and at least try to identify the source(s) of these highly damaging leaks is, in my opinion, to walk past them,” he said. “To walk past these behaviours is to accept them. Council in doing so could be seen to establish a ‘cultural totem pole’ that sends the wrong message about leaking confidential information. It could also

deter good people from standing for Brimbank council at the next election in 2020. Brimbank needs the best possible candidates standing and winning elections. “I agree with the mayor and fellow councillor’s sentiment about getting on with the priority business of council, but also believe we have to properly clean up the mess. “Good, strong and principled governance practices really do matter and an independent investigation is needed.” See Cr Hedditch’s full letter online at www. starweekly.com.au

Taylors Hill Primary School has put its generosity on show, becoming one of the top fundraisers in the state for the annual Jeans for Genes Day. The fundraiser, which helps raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute by encouraging people to wear jeans to school or work, raised thousands of dollars in 2018. Taylors Hill primary raised $830 to be the ninth highest fundraiser out of all Victorian schools that participated. Principal Danielle Stella last week said it was a proud day for the school.

Brimbank’s kerbside recycling waste continues to be sent to landfill. Brimbank is one of 20 Victorian councils adversely impacted after the Environment Protection Authority banned SKM Services from accepting waste at its Coolaroo and Laverton North sites last month. Hume council has criticised SKM for failing to properly manage its recycling plants while Wyndham council last week cut ties with SKM, saying the company had failed to fulfil its contractual obligations, and switched to Visy. Star Weekly asked the council if it is considering a similar stance. Brimbank infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the council had a contract with SKM to 2026. “Brimbank council is hugely disappointed that the temporary stop on recycling processing at SKM has yet to be resolved,” Mr Whiteside said. “We continue to be in daily contact with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG, contract principal) and SKM.” A number of councils have asked residents to avoid putting out recyclable material, but Mr Whiteside said Brimbank council did not expect residents to store waste. “Our priority is the health and safety of the community,” he said. “We can’t expect our community to store recyclables indefinitely. At the same time, we thank those households who have kept their recycling bins in during this time, if they have not been full, and those making an extra effort to cut back on their recycling waste.”

Council calls for toxic dump help By Ewen McRae Brimbank council is calling for a zero tolerance approach from the state government for illegal storage and dumping of industrial and hazardous waste. It follows a major fire at a West Footscray factory in 2018, which led to the discovery of large stockpiles of toxic chemicals in warehouses in Epping and Campbellfield. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council worked hard to prevent similar stockpiles but needed government help.

“Unfortunately, the measures currently in place to prevent this illegal activity are not sufficient,” Cr Congreve said. “Rogue operators have continued the illegal storage of industrial and hazardous waste. As a result our community has been exposed to dangerous toxic fires, such as what happened late last year just across the Brimbank border. “Council does its best to take a hard-line approach … but we cannot tackle the issue on our own. “The challenges faced are often complex and resource-intensive. Councils lack enforcement

powers, which means it is difficult for us to act swiftly and impose stronger penalties. This is a statewide problem and it needs a statewide solution.” The council will write to the Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio, Environment Protection Authority chief executive Dr Cathy Wilkinson, and WorkSafe Victoria chief executive Clare Amies, to advocate for a zero tolerance approach. Cr Virginia Tachos raised the issue as a notice of motion at the recent council meeting, and called for a pilot program that assigns an EPA

officer to each council to become a permanent arrangement. “The loopholes that allow rogue operators to go undetected must be closed. Mitigation and prevention has a bigger impact than cleaning up afterwards,” Cr Tachos said. “One important step would be for the state government to make the Officer for the Protection of the Local Environment [OPLE] program permanent. “We’re asking the state government to continue funding the OPLE program as it has so much potential to have a big impact.”

Drive through declutter A range of items, including TVs, computers, electronic appliances, whitegoods, furniture, mattresses, bicycles, homewares, clothes and linen will all be accepted. However residents cannot bring asbestos, construction waste, chemicals, biological waste, sharps, broken monitors, fluorescent tubes and smoke detectors. The event will take place at J.R. Parsons Reserve, Sunshine on Sunday, March 31 from 9am-2pm. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve encouraged the community to get behind the initiative, with unwanted items going to a good cause. “It’s easy and no charge for residents to participate in the pop-up event. On the day, simply load up the car or trailer and arrive at the location, we’ll take care of the rest – you don’t even need to get out of your car,” Cr Congreve said. “We are partnering with local charity organisations, including West Welcome Wagon and Bikes 4 Life, to recycle and repurpose unwanted household items, including mattresses, whitegoods and electronic items.”

Specsavers Audiology Taylors Lakes’ Manan Jassal and Specsavers Audiology Sunshine’s Bhavya Srinivasa are encouraging residents, especially older residents and those who work in a noisy environment, to get their hearing checked. “There are individuals with significant hearing loss who haven’t been tested for the last 10-12 years, and they are not aware of the importance of early identification and prevention of hearing loss,” Ms Srinivasa said. “Hearing Awareness Week (March 3-9) serves as a first stepping stone and provides an opportunity for individuals from all walks of

life to consider a hearing screener as a part of their health check.” The most recent figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal nearly 31,000 people in Brimbank are living with undiagnosed hearing loss. “On average, statistics have shown it takes people seven to 10 years between the time taken from noticing signs of hearing loss to when they take action about it,” Ms Jassal said. The pair said avoiding prolonged exposure to loud noise or music, not using cotton buds to clean your ears, and protecting your ears with sunscreen were some of the easiest ways to take care of your hearing. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade is emphasising the dangers of lit cigarettes, as the state’s bushfire season looks likely to extend into May. The MFB said firefighters attend 10 fires caused by carelessly discarded smoking materials every month. The MFB called on members of the public to dob in a litter bug. The Environment Protection Authority can issue fines of up to $645 for a lit cigarette. Report littering to the EPA’s website, its mobile app, or by calling 1300 372 842.

Kobi takes the next step By Tate Papworth Kobi Gorman wasn’t expected to be able to walk until midway through this year, but the 21-month toddler has defied all expectations and will this month stride out with his family in a charity walk. Kobi was born at 31 weeks gestation due to PPROM (preterm premature rupture of membranes) at the 28-week mark. He weighed just 1.48 kilograms at birth. His movements had been limited until one day in early January, he “took a giant step”.

Kobi’s mum Kate Gorman said one of the goals they had set for Kobi in physio this year was to get him moving. “He wasn’t able to sit by himself until 12 months old and had never been able to crawl, so we didn’t think walking would happen any time soon,” she said. “He started pulling himself up by the couch, then one day he just let go and took off. There was no crawling first – he was just so determined and wanted to move to follow his big brother and sister.” At Kobi’s last physio appointment the family decided taking part in WalkWest would be a fitting way to celebrate his welcome milestone. WalkWest is an annual event for the Western Health Foundation. Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The event comprises a two, five or

10-kilometre walk or run which can be entered individually or as part of a team. Ms Gorman said her family plans to take part as a large team to support Kobi. “We’ve got our entire immediate family taking part and we’ve also extended the invite to our extended family,” she said.

Slurry leak leads to fine A Keilor Park concrete supplier has been fined more than $8000 following a leak at its facility last month. The leak was discovered by Victorian Environment Protection Authority officers during an inspection of the Terror Street site operated by concrete supplier Economix. Officers discovered a concrete slurry breaching its storage boundaries across the facility and making its way into neighbouring land. The neighbouring land is owned by Melbourne Water and is within the Steele Creek catchment that feeds into the Maribyrnong River. EPA metro region manager Dan Hunt said the leak released highly alkaline concrete slurry into neighbouring land, leaving dried concrete and killing off vegetation. “The leak had the potential to impact plants, fish and other forms of aquatic life,” Mr Hunt said. “It’s important that concrete slurry is properly collected and disposed safely. “If it isn’t, and makes its way into our stormwater system and waterways, it can cause environmental damage.” Ewen McRae

Take two for university By Benjamin Millar Victoria University’s latest intake includes students giving a whole new meaning to a double degree. Twins Mia and Ava Duggan-Sorbara have both enrolled in a bachelor of music, while Melanie and Jessica Kirjakovski are both undertaking a bachelor of biomedicine on the pathway to becoming doctors.

Mia said she and her sister are no strangers to performing together, a partnership that stretches back to combining their voices in song at their grandmother’s funeral when they were aged 13. “Nonna always loved hearing us sing and it was really her who launched our singing as a profession,” she said. The talented twins have added to their singing skills by teaching themselves to play guitar and piano. The pair also write their own

pop-folk music, performing at cafes and bars as well as weddings and funerals. Melanie and Jessica Kirjakovski both have their sights set on working in the medical field, ideally as doctors. A campaign aiming to build awareness about out-of-hours medical services as an alternative to crowded emergency departments was launched last week. The campaign by North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network is in response to data that shows in the two years to 2016, more than 250,000 patients attended an emergency department in the north and west of Melbourne with a medical case which may have been able to be treated at an after hours general practice or pharmacy. More than 37,000 of these people lived within Brimbank. Care at an after hours clinic costs $93 on average, compared with $368 at an emergency department. This cost balloons to $1351 if the patient arrives by ambulance. Network chief executive Adjunct Associate Professor Christopher Carter said unnecessary presentations at emergency departments put extra pressure on already busy hospitals. “Attendance at an ED is thought to be the only option available for medical care outside of business hours,” Associate Professor Carter said. “While we don’t want to discourage people from visiting emergency departments when they need to, many people with less serious conditions may have the option to be treated either at home, over the phone or at a local after hours facility.” Ewen McRae

New chapter for club A homework club for indigenous children in Brimbank is entering its second year, and it’s hoping to grow. The Koori Homework Club is run at St Albans’ Bowery Theatre on Mondays during the school term, and organiser Lee-Anne Clarke said the first 12 months had been a huge success. “I work for the Department of Education and Training, and in the Koori engagement support sector in Brimbank and Melton … I noticed a need for some type of community connection with the children and also to culturally support them,” Ms Clarke said. “It’s a big indigenous community in Brimbank, over 800 people, and we’re slowly building this program up.

“The first year has gone really well, and the kids and families all look forward to it each week, which is fantastic.” The program works with primary and secondary-aged children, helping with reading and maths, as well as art and story telling around indigenous culture. “It’s culturally based, and I believe it’s important because outside of the Koori Homework Club we don’t have a community hub for indigenous culture in Brimbank,” Ms Clarke said. Deer Park branch of the Australian Labor Party will call on the Department of Local Government to dismantle the municipalities of Sunshine, Altona, Footscray, Williamstown, and Werribee and replace them with a Regional Planning Authority. It also wants all present councillors sacked and replaced by 16 paid administrators responsible to a central authority.

A private investment company has bought the Deer Park shopping centre in Neale Rd from Hersfield Developments Corporation Pty Ltd for more than $40 million. Hersfield acknowledged the sale but said the purchasing company did not yet want to be identified.

Brimbank council is claiming victory after the State Government prohibited gaming machines in the H.V. McKay (Massey-Ferguson) bulk store building in central Sunshine. Last Thursday the Victoria Government Gazette carried a notice that the Minister for Planning and Local Government, Mr Maclellan, had extended State Government gaming controls to the Sunshine Marketplace shopping complex in Hampshire Road.

Sick of feeling unsafe in their own suburb, Sunshine residents will hold a rally calling on the State Government to boost the number of police officers in Brimbank. In the wake of a young man being beaten unconscious at Sunshine railway station last week, Sunshine Residents and Ratepayers Association president Darlene Reilly said residents had had enough of crime on Brimbank’s streets.

Once the temperature hit 36, the chances of the Parkers and their opponents, ladder leader Essendon, returning to the greens dwindled. The temperature continued to rise and after one hour of playing the waiting game, the heat rule was applied, the match was called a draw and nine points were distributed to both sides. “Once it goes over 36 degrees, play is suspended and if it hasn’t come down within an hour, they call it a heat out,” Parkers president Neil Cromie said. “We couldn’t continue.” The game was called off with Deer Park trailing narrowly 44-42.

It robbed both sides the chance to finish what had been a quality game to that point. It also pushed Deer Park ahead of Melbourne and Bundoora RSL on the live ladder. All the Parkers could do was wait for news from the other venues and pray for a miracle. With the temperature well into the high 30s, many local cricket matches were stopped due to the heat policy, yet spectators were able to watch footy being played at Avalon Airport Oval. Social media went into meltdown with many saying cricket is a summer sport, that means it is hot. Deal with it. While we have become much better at identifying dehydration and making sure it is almost nonexistent – with drink breaks now mandatory and more frequent – heat stroke is a real danger. The risk is too high to take a chance. It is after all a game. It is supposed to be fun, not life threatening. As for footy being played in that heat by professional athletes? The same rules should apply.

Tigers through to finals By Lance Jenkinson It took 14 rounds for newly promoted Sunshine United to work out where it fits in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. Heading into Saturday’s final day of the regular season, the Tigers had three outcomes open to them: a finals berth, mid-table safety or the dreaded relegation. With a tiny 116 to chase against Seddon at Hanmer Reserve on Saturday, all three results – a loss, a first innings win and an outright win – were still in play for the Tigers, but captain Leigh Sheridan implored his side not to over-complicate things in the search of an unlikely outright. “The competition being so tight, if we had’ve lost and results went against us, we were a chance of getting relegated,” he said. “We had to make sure, first and foremost, that we made the 116 runs. “Once we were in a good position, we started to reassess and think about the outright, but by the time we got to tea, we’d just passed them so it wasn’t realistic.” Sunshine United completed its win with relative ease. The Tigers were never seriously threatened, passing the target three down in just 51 overs. Sangaran Nandhalal was in total control for the Tigers. He made a patient 82, which included just four fours. “He was fantastic,” Sheridan said. “It was a chanceless innings. “He’s always had it in him, he’s made a few scores this year and he just bats nice and tidy. “He’s not a big hitter, but he just manipulates the field real well, picks the gaps when he needs to and can hit a boundary when he wants to.” Nandhalal featured in a match-winning 82-run second wicket stand with opener Scott Dalrymple. Dalrymple only made 18 in the partnership, but his contribution was no less significant. “He admitted himself, runs weren’t flowing and he was pretty scratchy, but he managed to hang around, which is what he’s good at,” Sheridan said. “He can stay in for long periods of time and that’s what he did. “He got us into a position where the game was ours. “It was fantastic concentration in the heat.” With relegation avoided, Sunshine United played the waiting game to see if it would be featuring in this year’s finals. ■ The end of the cricket home-and-away season always ensures some heartbreak. Hoppers Crossing has done well overall as a club, but the first XI dropping out with a last round loss takes some of the gloss off. Werribee finished the season with a tie and heads into the finals campaign in good shape. Williamstown made it, but Altona and Yarraville will only be watching the subby finals. Altona’s Adam Yates was the third highest run maker in the competition, while Matt Dean, from Werribee, topped the batting averages from his nine innings – four short of the majority of the top 10. Patrick O’Malley from Williamstown had a good all round season with 24 wickets and 316 runs. Caulfield will be the team to beat. ■ New rules, new faces, new hair colours and no injuries are the major talking points of any AFL pre-season. Judging by some of the crowd comments I heard at the North Melbourne-St Kilda game at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, the new rules are just as open for robust discussion as the old ones. If these changes unclutter the game and allow it to look more like Aussie rules than rugby, I am all for them. ■ My love of horse racing is well known, and while it continues to be a sport that attracts bad headlines that is somewhat balanced by champions like Winx and innovations like the All Star Mile, a race where the public voted in 10 of the 14 runners. Keilor Downs boxer wins recovery battle Three days before the biggest fight of his career, Keilor Downs boxer Joel Camilleri was holed up in bed and in a world of pain as food poisoning took hold. The 28-year-old’s chance to fight for the right to become Australia’s super-welterweight champion was on shaky ground. “I got food poisoning on the Tuesday of fight week,” Camilleri said. “I was hallucinating in bed and had a temperature of 38.5. It was crazy.” His condition improved quickly. By fight night, he was close to 100 per cent and ready to step into the ring for a title bout with New Zealand-born Queenslander Billy Limov. Camilleri produced one of his best performances in the ring, winning by technical knockout in the fifth round. In the seven years since turning pro, Camilleri’s goal has been to become national super-welterweight champion. “It means a lot to me,” he said. “I’ve been chasing this title since 2012.”

Camilleri was not sure how his body would react after the illness in the lead-up to the fight. The frustrating part for him was that his preparation since Christmas had been spot on. He made up for the lack of exercise in the lead-up with his mental strength and boxing intelligence.

While he was the younger man in the fight by three years, Camilleri had more experience than his opponent. Camilleri was on the front foot early in the fight, knocking down Limov in the first round. Limov showed tremendous grit to hang in with Camilleri, but it was to no avail. “He had a very good chin, but when you’re copping some big punches, it eventually gets you,” Camilleri said. “He came back pretty strongly in the third and showed a massive heart. I was too smart for him, landed some big shots and got him out of there by the fifth. “If the fight had’ve continued, I believe I would’ve hurt him pretty badly, so I’m glad the doctor stopped the fight.” Camilleri holds three title belts, including the Australian super-welterweight title, the World Boxing Council Asian Boxing Council welterweight title and the Victorian state super-welterweight title. Calder sets a hot pace By Lance Jenkinson Calder United has laid down an early marker in National Premier League Victoria women’s soccer. In a three-week span, Calder has comprehensively beaten three sides tipped to be challenging for the title at the end of the season. Following its win over reigning NPL champions FC Bulleen Lions in the community shield and victory over traditional contender Alamein in the season opener, Calder brought down premiers plate holder South Melbourne in a 3-0 second-round smashing at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday. With temperatures nearing 40C, the Calder players ran the game out better than their opposition. “We always backed the girls to get through it because I know our fitness levels are pretty good,” Torcaso said. “We’ve put a lot of miles into the girls’ legs over the pre-season, so it was good for them. “I was pretty confident we’d be able to over-run them.” Melissa Taranto was lethal in front of goal for Calder United. She scored two of her team’s three goals, with second-half substitute Polly Doran adding the third. Taranto’s tireless work in the midfield drew most of the praise from her coach. “I think her best game is driving forward,” Torcaso said. “She can not only score the goals, but she sets up the play really well.” “She just battled through the conditions, which was fantastic.” Catherine Zimmerman was again influential for Calder United in attack. again set a positive example. There were no weak links for Calder. Torcaso’s only problem is finding minutes for all his players, such is the depth in the Calder squad. “We’ve grinded through three tough games and we’ve exposed some of the young ones in those games,” he said. “It doesn’t matter who we put on the park.” Calder United is one of three teams undefeated after two rounds. Calder’s next test will come from second-last Senior NTC at Knox Regional Football Centre on Saturday. In men’s NPL, it was a weekend of woe for Green Gully Cavaliers and Melbourne Knights, with both of the local sides suffering defeat for the first time this season. The Cavaliers lost 3-1 to Bentleigh Greens on Friday night, with captain Nick Kalmar’s first-half goal a mere consolation. The Knights suffered a 2-0 defeat to Heidelberg United on Saturday night. In NPL 2, St Albans Saints went down 2-1 to North Geelong Warriors, with Jordan Wilkes scoring their lone goal.

Keilor cruises into finals With the stakes at their highest, Keilor came to play and secured a third consecutive finals berth in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The Blues needed to beat St Albans to cement their finals run and they did it easily in a 77-run win at Joe Brown Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Keilor posted 251 on day one, thanks largely to the efforts of Kaushal Lokuarachchi with 75 off 123 balls and Robert Clements with 65 off 145 balls. Lokuarachchi and Clements combined for a 125-run second wicket stand. Late runs from Dinesh Daminda (45) and captain Daniel Stavris (33) turned it into a more imposing score for the Blues. St Albans was bowled out for 174 in the 55th over. Lokuarachchi was the main bowling weapon for Keilor with 3-36, Daminda, Upal Bandara and Vitaly Wilkinson snared two wickets each. The fourth spot in the finals went to Sunshine United, the other newly promoted side this summer. In division 1, PEGS had a stunning outright win over Keilor Park to book its place in the north conference finals. PEGS set a massive target of 4-306 declared on the back of centuries from Kristian Dixon (126) and Samith Fernando (101 not out) and relegated Keilor Park had no answer, bowled out for 60 and 161. PEGS will visit top ranked St Francis de Sales in the semi-finals. Deer Park avoided relegation from the west conference with a four-wicket win over Laverton. Angelo Emmanuel saved the Lions’ season with 7-52 off 28.4 overs and 62. Hashan Wanasekara’s contribution of 76 not out in the run chase was also critical for the Lions. In division 3, Sunshine finished the regular season as minor premiers after a cruisy 103-run win over Seabrook. The Crows set a target of 202 after Asela Aluthge carved out a valuable 71. Seabrook was skittled for 99 with Charith Fernando claiming 4-20 for the Crows. Sunshine Heights qualified for the finals in third place after beating the top two sides in the run to the finals. The Heights continued their strong form with a seven-wicket win over East Keilor in a game when Saman Gonawala belted 102 not out for the Heights. Sunshine will host Williamstown Imperials in the semi-finals and Sunshine Heights play away to Point Cook. In division 4, Grand United suffered a final round two-run defeat to St Andrews, but still qualified for the finals in third place.
