A Braybrook student has combined two of her great loves to create an artistic performance rated as one of the state’s best. Veronica Vujicic was selected as one of 30 students from across Victoria to perform in the Top Class Dance show of the VCE Season of Excellence last week. Her solo performance is a piece about a growing tree that experiences bushfire. Her goal in the piece is to make the audience feel emotional about the destruction caused by bushfires and imagine it in a human form. “Part of the curriculum is to produce a solo based on a story or stimulus – and I decided to do mine on a growing tree and burning tree,” she said. “I’m really passionate about trees and nature, so it made sense to incorporate that into my performance. “I find that when you’re passionate about something it tends to come naturally.” The Caroline Chisholm Catholic College student was selected to take part in Top Class Dance after receiving an A+ exam mark last year. She performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre last Thursday in front of friends, family and other schools. “It’s a nice way to start year 12,” she said. “I’d love to keep dance going in the future, maybe as a hobby or if I could even teach a few classes.” Tate Papworth

Parking stress tackled By Ewen McRae Parking hotspots in Sunshine, St Albans and around train stations are set for a revamp under a proposed parking strategy before Brimbank council. The council last week endorsed a Draft Parking Strategy for community consultation, with the aim of providing a co-ordinated approach to alleviating carparking stress. Activity centre areas in Sunshine and St Albans are among the highest priority areas for attention.

Brimbank has a high reliance on car travel, with 54 per cent of households in the municipality having access to two or more cars – three per cent above the greater Melbourne average – according to data outlined in the strategy. It states that private vehicles account for 76 per cent of work travel in Brimbank, compared to the Melbourne average of 64 per cent. The strategy is also aimed at alleviating parking stress around train stations, with the most recent data showing 9700 people access Brimbank train stations on an average

weekday, and most nearby carparks are full by 7am. A push by the Brimbank Disability Network for more disabled parking across the municipality is expected to form a strong part of the final strategy. More paid parking areas in key locations is also being considered. Cr Virginia Tachos encouraged residents to have their say on the strategy when consultation begins next month. “Parking is a source of frustration and angst for our communities residents, businesses and visitors,” Cr Tachos said.

“Better managing existing carparking is extremely important and I encourage all rate payers to have their say on it.” Cr John Hedditch also expressed support for the strategy. “Parking is a very important part of our day-to-day living, and by heck we get a lot of people chewing our ear about it, and rightly so,” he said. “This enables people to look at the strategic framework and think about it from their perspective and where they live and work … I look forward to seeing their contributions.”

Brimbank targets illegal brothels Brimbank council will investigate ways to put the squeeze on illegal brothels. Mayor Lucinda Congreve raised the issue at last week’s council meeting, asking for a report on options for dealing with alleged illegal brothels – with estimates of at least 10 operating within Brimbank. “Council often gets complaints from our community alleging massage parlours are operating as illegal brothels in Brimbank,” Cr Congreve said. “This is a huge concern to our residents, and

we want to look at our options for dealing with the problem. “At present, investigating alleged brothels is extremely challenging because councils have limited legislative powers to deal with such issues, and such investigations often pose risks to council officers.

“As Victoria Police is the lead agency in sex industry enforcement, the current process is to refer all allegations about alleged illegal brothels for investigation by Victoria Police, including the relevant local police station and the Sex Industry Coordination Unit. “However, such a process can take time, and we’re aware that our community wants quicker action on such matters.” Police have shut down a number of illegal brothels in Brimbank, including one in Perth Avenue, Albion, in December 2017. Kingston council has used private investigators for the past four years to investigate

Going in to bat for Abbey’s vision The Melbourne Renegades may have taken out this year’s Big Bash title, but a far more important T20 is set to light up Ainsworth Reserve in West Sunshine this week. A fundraising match for the Abbey Solo Foundation will take over the oval and surrounds, with the foundation’s AbSTARS taking on a Victorian Police side. The Abbey Solo Foundation was established to support families of young children with cancer, helping them with accommodation costs and support when attending The Royal Children’s Hospital. Abbey Solo was a pupil at Mother of God Primary School in Ardeer. She died in 2015 after a prolonged battle with leukemia. School principal and foundation president Gerard Broadfoot said the game was a chance for the community to get behind a cause that Abbey felt strongly about. “She was a pretty special kid, and she fought that disease for about six of her nine years,” Mr Broadfoot said. “Her family were together that whole time, and she was quite conscious of families being together … especially those from the country, so we do all of this in her name to try and help out.” The AbSTARS team will feature a mix of Abbey’s friends and family, staff from the hospital and Sunshine Heights Cricket Club members. Women’s Big Bash players Makinley Blows (Stars all-rounder) and Emma Inglis (Renegades keeper) will also play and the event will feature a range of family entertainment around the boundary. Play will start at 5pm on Wednesday, February 27.

Portfolio role model deemed a council win Brimbank councillors have been allocated their portfolios and committees for the year, following a successful trial. Council established portfolios for each councillor in February, 2018, with the aim of making councillors “knowledge champions” in various fields. Three new portfolios have been established for the second year; – Connecting Brimbank, Healthy Brimbank and Brimbank Proud. Cr Victoria Borg said the portfolio system had been successful. “It is great to see the portfolios that were established for the pilot year being so successful,” Cr Borg said. “It was a welcome addition to the governance structure … and on a personal level I feel very excited about these new portfolios.” Mayor Lucinda Congreve and Cr Virginia Tachos will look after the Resilient Brimbank portfolio, while former mayor Margaret Giudice will move to Brimbank Innovation. A teenager who allegedly stole a car, cash and other items at a Delahey residence on February 10 was arrested and charged last week. The 17-year-old is alleged to have also committed robberies in Preston, Thomastown, Bundoora, Truganina and Docklands in the past two weeks, He was arrested in St Albans on February 19. He has been charged with armed robbery, robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, handling stolen goods, theft, committing an indictable offence while on bail and traffic offences. He appeared in the Children’s Court last week.

Festival fun in the park The McKay Garden Festival will bloom in Sunshine this weekend with family fun and entertainment. The Friends of McKay Gardens will be hosting their fourth Garden Festival in the 110-year-old park. The fun will unfold at the HG McKay Gardens from noon on Sunday, March 3, and will feature a range of entertainment and heritage activities, as well as food stalls and a fitness corner. The main entertainment on the day will come from the Christine Ayres Irish dancers, who are the current world champions in their division after success in Glasgow in 2018.

Firefighters attended fires in Sunshine North and Braybrook on February 19. Crews were called to Berkshire Road in Sunshine North about 11.25am, arriving to find a building adjoining a warehouse on fire. Firefighters made quick work of the incident, getting the blaze under control in less than 30 minutes. Later that afternoon, crews attended a house fire in Hinkler Street, Braybrook, where they found a weatherboard house in flames. The fire involved the rear of the property, including a garage. Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in 24 minutes.

Copper wire thefts cripple clubs By Ewen McRae The theft of copper wire from Brimbank sporting grounds has continued, with Selwyn Park in Albion the latest to be hit. The incident, the latest in a series of similar thefts across the municipality, has left the reserve and the Sunshine United Cricket Club rooms without power since February 17. Sunshine United president Mark Dalrymple said the impact on the club at the “pointy end of the season” had been profound. However they nearly caught the criminals in the act.

“We had a function at the rooms on Saturday night, and it went quite late which is unusual,” Mr Dalrymple said. “When we were locking up at the end, someone heard some activity over near the tennis courts, but didn’t think much of it, but it appears that was the start of the theft. “When we turned up to play our under-18s game on Sunday morning we had no power, and it’s been that way since. “It’s been one of the most difficult weeks we’ve had in my time at the club. Just simple things like running a bar, we needed eskys and

ice, preparing food, we can’t really do that. It’s been very tough on everyone, but the attitude from the club has been fantastic.” The club has had no hot water or power since the theft and had to use a generator to run lights and fridges for its major fundraiser at the weekend. Council infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the cost of replacing the wire and helping clubs operate in the interim was severe. “In the past 18 months there have been 18 copper cabling thefts from community sports

grounds and other sites in Brimbank,” Mr Whiteside said. “Not only do these thefts come at a significant financial cost to the community – more than $500,000 in insurance claims are being lodged – they can also heavily impact the amenities and the users of these grounds. “We’re making every effort to deter future thefts.” Selwyn Park now has a security guard on site 24-hours a day, however the club says there is no firm timeline on when power will be restored.

Springing into action A Caroline Springs School is aiming to be the most active school in Victoria for the second year running. Springside P-9 College was named the most active in the state after last year’s Active April initiative, with nearly 1000 of its students registered to kickstart healthy habits. Active April is a state government initiative that urges Victorians of all ages, abilities and fitness levels to complete 30 minutes of exercise each day throughout the month. Physical education teacher Jess Francke said the school hoped to smash its previous record and encourage the local community to do the same. “We aim to promote physical activity and getting enjoyment from exercise at our school,” Ms Francke said. “The initiative is run over the school holidays, so gives the pupils a calendar of activities that they can do while they are not at school.

“It doesn’t have to be anything too difficult. During school, we run activities in the gym, which might include skipping, hopscotch or a game against the teachers.” Registration is free and includes a range of offers, including a 10-day pass for new members at Melton Waves. Active April participants can access the Get Active Workouts video series via the app. It includes 30 videos demonstrating 10-minute workout ideas designed to inspire and motivate participants of all ages and abilities. Celebs ready to rumble By Tate Papworth A former Love Island contestant and a popular Youtube personality are on a collision course. Elias Chigros and Mitchell Orval have been booked as the main event for Team Ellis Boxing’s upcoming “Pretender to Contender” fight night. Elias was a popular contestant in the 2018 edition of the reality show Love Island, while Mitch’s Youtube channel went viral through the popularity of his “Angry Dad” videos. Both men have been training four days a week at Team Ellis Boxing gym in East Keilor. Gym owner Jake Ellis said the bout was shaping up as being a fight to remember. “Both guys are very different personalities,” Ellis said. “Elias is more quiet and reserved whereas Mitch is more in your face. They had a face-off last week and you can just tell that this is going to heat up very quickly.” The event will be the third installment of celebrity fights hosted by the gym. “I eventually want to have 20-30 celebrities in my stable so I can take this to TV networks,” Ellis said. “I’ve already floated the idea with the networks and they’re interested. I just need a few more personalities.” While some dismiss the upcoming fight as a gimmick, Ellis said it would be anything but. “Elias actually had a fight in an event we had last year and ended up with a busted nose and busted knuckles,” he said. “This is a real fight and part of the idea behind it is to introduce a new audience to the sport.” The undercard will also be unique with a father and son set to take to the ring. “I’ve never actually heard of a father and

son getting into the ring together in my years of being involved with the sport,” Ellis said. “The son had a bit of a hard time and boxing has really helped him. His dad

Bus revamp for Heights Burnside Heights residents will soon have better access to public transport and improved links to the Caroline Springs town centre. A revised bus route 426 will also provide easier access to Albion and Sunshine stations. New bus stops will be installed on Westwood Drive ahead of the changes, which will take affect on Sunday, May 19. The revised route 426 timetable will have more than 400 trips a week, from 5am to after midnight Monday to Saturday and from 7am to midnight on Sundays. Frequency will be increased, allowing improved access to key destinations including Caroline Springs town centre and Sunshine. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said the upgrades were a win for the community. “We’re making public transport more accessible for the residents of Burnside Heights by bringing services to their doorstep,” she said. “The is the latest improvement to the bus network throughout Caroline Springs, making sure that locals can get where they need to go.” The state government says the revamp has been made possible following the opening of the Westwood Drive bridge and is the latest phase in a roll-out of an upgraded bus network for the area. The 19 year-old from Caroline Springs, who is known as Nunu, is the first recipient of Victoria University and City West Water’s Celebrating Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) scholarship. Nunu is one of only a handful of women stuyding engineering at VU. She was nominated for the scholarship by one of her lecturers, and said she was over the moon.

Compost plan takes root Brimbank residents will soon find it easier to compost their household waste, with the council set to adopt a policy aimed at reducing landfill. The council last week ticked off the Brimbank Home Composting Program, under which 300 Brimbank households will be supported to start composting. The program includes a suite of rebates, information and engagement options that will encourage households to take on home composting and help cut landfill levels. Councillor Kim Thien Truong, who raised the issue at the November, 2018, council meeting, said the program was a step in the right direction. “The management of organic food and garden waste is an important topic,” Cr Truong said. “We know that reducing levels of waste from our kitchens and gardens can contribute to reducing overall waste going to landfill. “Rather than putting this type of waste in the bin, a household organic processing system creates a useful product for the garden that helps to retain water and nutrients to build resilience to drought. “A program like this would help encourage a love of gardening in the community, which is a healthy and popular activity, especially for senior residents.” “It’s important that we support and educate the community to get involved in ways that help the environment.”

“I was really surprised when I found out,” she said. “It means a lot to me. I never thought I’d receive something like this. When I was nominated, I was so happy with that – so when I got a call to say I’d won, it was overwhelming.” Nunu credits Victoria University’s new first-year learning model with being a big part of her success. “There’s some subjects I struggle with, but my friends have really helped,” she said. “They do a different study style here and there’s a lot of benefit to it.” Nunu arrived in Australia as a refugee from Myanmar (Burma) in 2014 and said her time in Australia had been nothing but positive. “I’ve been really lucky and haven’t experienced any discrimination … everyone has been really welcoming,” she said.

Police put the brakes on bikes By Tate Papworth Brimbank Highway Patrol officers made good on their promise to enlist the Police Airwing in a bid to crackdown on motorbike users. During Operation Endo this month, every motorbike rider observed in the area was checked by police, including breath and drug tests. Motorcyclists who attempted to evade interception were tracked by the airwing and then arrested by ground units. Police said they were happy that a large

number of riders were found to be doing the right thing, however there were still a number of riders issued with notices. Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Bill Joannidis said the operation had immediate impact. “On the first day of this operation seven motorcycles were impounded for numerous offences, including driving while suspended and speeding 45km/h or more over the limit.” Police impounded nine vehicles during the operation. Sergeant Joannidis said one of the worst offenders was a speeding rider.

“One rider evaded police from Ballarat Road and was followed by the airwing to an address in Taylors Hill where he was arrested and his bike seized,” he said. “This male, in his 20s, was riding at over 200km/h along Caroline Springs Boulevard, Caroline Springs while the airwing was following him. “He was arrested and interviewed by Brimbank CIU for charges including conduct endangering persons. “He was remanded in custody until March 21 to appear at Sunshine Magistrates Court.”

Sergeant Joannidis said motorbike riders can expect more of the same throughout the year. “Motorcycle riders in Brimbank and throughout the state are over-represented in serious injury collisions and fatal collisions,” he said. “Despite making up less than 1 per cent of motorists on the roads, they are involved in approximately 10 per cent of all serious injury collisions. “This operation was considered a success and will continue to run with airwing support throughout the year on a regular basis.”

Get in on the act Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House is used for many things, but on Wednesdays it’s a place of improvisation, games and fun. Performer Jessica Gerger is heading up drama workshops at the Albion house, which she says is a special environment. “The great thing about drama is that these rewarding skills are developed disguised as lots of fun,” Gerger said. “Students can expect to have lots of laughs and fun, make new friends. They will slowly say goodbye to shyness and feel the satisfaction of performance. “Everyone respects each other and nothing is ‘wrong’ – the students are free to experiment and put forward their ideas.” The classes are designed for primary school pupils aged seven to 12, but Gerger said anyone was welcome to give them a go. “I’m determined that children should have a safe space in which they have the freedom to

express themselves with confidence,” she said. “Also – drama is so much fun. Deer Park man jailed for rape By Ewen McRae

On April 27, 2018, Eusenio PELENATINO failed to appear on bail at the Sunshine Magistrates Court. A warrant for his arrest was issued for the offence of criminal damage. On July 13, 2018 a charge and warrant was issued for his arrest for the offence of failing to answer bail. Police are seeking information as to PALENATINO’s current whereabouts.

At the Sunshine Magistrates Court on October 23, 2018, Terry Anne WARD failed to appear on bail to answer charges including trafficking heroin and possessing a drug of dependence. A warrant was issued for her arrest. On January 8, 2019 a further charge and warrant to arrest was issued for the offence of failing to answer bail. Police are seeking information as to WARD’s current whereabouts.

A Deer Park man has been sentenced in the County Court to more than eight years in prison for the rape and assault of his partner on several occasions. Mark Kington, 42, was found guilty on November 19 last year of four counts of rape and one of common assault against his former partner. The court heard that Kington formed a relationship with the victim in late 2013 and the pair was soon living with Kington’s parents in Deer Park. The court heard that both Kington and the victim were using ice and marijuana throughout their relationship. In November, 2014, the victim arrived home to find Kington smoking ice. When he handed her the ice pipe to use, he forced himself on her. The victim said he then threw $50 at her and told her to move out. The victim went to live with a friend, but a few weeks later she visited Kington’s house and a similar offence occurred. The victim moved into a property in Thomastown in early 2015, with Kington a regular visitor. The court heard that Kington forced himself on the victim twice more during the next eight months, and on one occasion strangled the victim with a T-shirt to the brink of unconsciousness. This incident led to the common assault charge.

Kington denied all the charges to the police and in a trial, but was found guilty by a jury last year. In sentencing earlier this month, Judge John Smallwood said it was clear Kington did not understand how serious his acts were.

“You denied the matters and that falls upon me to … give an appropriate sentence for the objective seriousness of the offending, in circumstances where there is no remorse and no insight into the seriousness of what you did to this woman,” Judge Smallwood said. “The offending is indeed serious. It took place over a significant period of time. It cannot be viewed that any one of these charges as being in isolation. “In a domestic violence situation, this sort of – she described herself as being used effectively as a household utensil. General deterrence has to play a significant part. “A very significant gaol sentence is the only sentencing option.” Kington received a total sentence of eight years and three months and will be eligible for parole in five years.

Recycle service still grounded By Tate Papworth Brimbank council says it’s disappointed recycling material had to be sent to landfill last week – but that its hands were tied. The council is one of 20 across Melbourne left scrambling after the Environment Protection Authority ordered recycling company SKM Services to stop accepting recyclable material at its Coolaroo and Laverton North sites because stockpiled waste posed a “significant” fire risk. Brimbank infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the situation was

far from ideal. “Council is disappointed it has had to send recycling to landfill this week due to a temporary processing stop at SKM Services,” he said. “No one wants recyclable material to go to landfill, but our priority must be to protect the health and safety of the community.

“There is currently no other viable recycling processing option available during this short-term disruption.” SKM will be unable to accept waste until the EPA confirms the sites are compliant with waste management policy. Despite the disruptions, Brimbank curbside collections continued as normal last week. Mr Whiteside told Star Weekly last week the situation would be resolved “within a matter of days” – but more than a week later, SKM was still unable to reopen its sites. He said the council would support SKM to

help it meet the EPA-imposed requirements. “Brimbank, with other SKM-contracted councils, are exploring every opportunity to support SKM to meet the requirements of the EPA-issued minor works notice,” he said. “Brimbank, with other SKM-contracted councils, are also working with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group to look at what measures can be put in place to ensure this situation does not happen again.” The council is contracted with SKM until 2026.

Footy star in team talk An AFLW premiership player has promoted the importance of leadership during a visit to Catholic Regional College St Albans. Western Bulldogs forward Aisling Utri last week addressed the school’s year 8 students as part of a teamwork and collaboration health discovery unit. College health and physical education leader Dale Marshall said Utri, also a hockey player, was an ideal person to address the college’s students. “In this unit, our students have been learning about the importance of having a positive support network around you and how to conduct yourself in a team environment – in school, sport and in the wider community,” Mr Marshall said. “Aisling Utri is involved in two high-profile team sports and has so much experience working in a team environment to pass on to our students.”

Utri spoke to the students about motivation, resilience, goal-setting, coping with pressure and health/nutrition, as well as the importance of teamwork and collaboration. At only 20 years of age, Utri has gathered the sort of sports resume of which even seasoned athletes would be envious. Cr Bob Turner Last week, I travelled to Canberra as part of the National Growth Areas Alliance Catch up with the Outer Suburbs campaign launch at Parliament House. The Federal election campaign is calling for better access to roads, transport, local jobs and community facilities in fast growing outer suburbs across Australia.

Are you preparing to send your little one to 4-year-old kindergarten in 2020? March is Kindergarten Readiness Month and parents and carers of toddlers are encouraged to take part in activities and information sessions that will help families make the leap into preschool education. Run by Melton City Council and City of Melton Kindergarten providers, the sessions are free and are an opportunity for parents to meet teachers, ask questions and help identify if their child is ready for kinder.

site to see the plants flourishing. The National Tree Day events are probably a highlight for me and the rest of the FOKC because they are so big. So many plants, so many people and heaps of space to cover. The last two years we have held this event at a site on the creek behind Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Fraser Street and we will be back there this year.

I have grown up and lived in Ardeer my whole life. I went to St Paul’s Primary School in West Sunshine and I love going to the group fitness classes at Sunshine Leisure Centre. I’m a bit of a fanatic, sometimes going as much as five times a week. The instructors there are so friendly and helpful. There’s a good variety of strength, cardio and stretching/meditative classes.

I really like the diversity of cultures in the area. It’s always fascinating walking along the streets of Sunshine and seeing so many different types of people. An excellent result of the diversity of cultures in Brimbank … is a great variety of restaurant cuisines to choose from. I also think it is a great benefit for Brimbank to have so much diversity.

We will be at Buckingham Reserve for Clean Up Australia Day (March 3) – that is always a popular one. We have a planting day near the end of Boreham Street on May 19. You can also find us at Sunshine station tending to our little planting site there, on the last Sunday of every month. More details are on our website (fokc. org.au).

What could make the area better? The amount of litter on the streets and in the Kororoit Creek is very concerning. Less litter would make Brimbank so much better. I don’t think it’s necessarily up to the council to spend more money on removing that rubbish … spending the money allocated more wisely, especially on education of the community, would be a great help. Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in Brimbank? Anywhere with banh mi. I haven’t taken the time and effort to select my favourite place. I’m clearly not that cultured when it comes to Vietnamese food. If the place has banh mi,

A group of western suburbs businessmen is making a last ditch stand to save the Victorian Permanent Home Show in West Melbourne from complete collapse.

All major building unions have placed black bans on the site of the old Deer Park swimming pool – which is now an official war memorial. The Sunshine council is building an elderly citizen’s centre on the site but work will not go ahead until the unions are satisfied that Deer Park residents are given the opportunity to discuss a new pool and recreation area.

Brimbank residents from across three suburbs – Taylors Lakes, Sunshine and St Albans – have called for a moratorium on electronic gaming machines in the municipality. The strong stance on the future of gaming in Brimbank was first taken in a petition, presented to Brimbank council last week, opposing a planning permit application by the Taylors Lakes Recreation Club.

Brimbank police have broadened their warnings about the threat to pedestrians after dark as safety concerns continue to escalate on the region’s troubled streets. Commuters are being urged to be vigilant as half a dozen people each week continue to be robbed at railway stations in the area.

As owner and head chef of the Aangan Indian restaurants, Sumit Malhotra has been busy spreading his brand of authentic cuisine for the past 15 years. In that time, he’s opened no less than four eateries across Melbourne and another in Shepparton. All that activity, which started as a humble takeaway in West Footscray, means the Aangan eateries are regularly hailed as being among the best Indian restaurants in Melbourne. Sumit explains why he believes “his brainchild” has proven a success. “All dishes (Indian and Indo-Chinese) are made by personal recipes of Sumit, who is well versed in the Indian method of dum pukht,” Sumit says. “Dum pukht, the traditional method for Moghul kings, is delicious, slow cooking with the joys of Indian spices. Recognised with a 2011 Champion of the Year award and Highest Star Rating 8 years in a row by The Age Good Food Guide under $30 category, and Number 1 Regional Winner by Menulog for three years, Sumit says Aangan’s food has been winning the hearts of Melbourne’s people. “As well, all our ingredients in daily cooked dishes are natural and sourced from local markets and suppliers. Along with a selection of classic meals, we cater for vegans and vegetarians.” With branches in West Footscray, Deer Park, Bundoora and Shepparton – and one upcoming in South Melbourne – it may be wondered how a uniformity of quality can be achieved. Sumit had a plan for that. “Consistency is key to ongoing customer satisfaction, so to maintain that we have a central kitchen where all prep is carried out and all sauces are made,” he says. “This means one quality control point – and it also helps when we cater for large functions.” Sumit himself is fully involved in food preparation in the central kitchen. Aangan can cater for functions for up to 500 people, while they also have a smaller venue that can accommodate 100 people. The restaurants run early-bird and holiday specials from time to time. Sumit isn’t resting on his laurels – he has a five-year plan to expand into country areas. “The hard work of hospitality brings its own highs,” he says. “But it’s always about the food and happy customers.”

McNally believes it takes time and familiarity for a genuine community to form. “You see each other walking up and down the stairs or in the carpark,” she says,

“Once someone becomes familiar, you start up a chat.” Both Anderson-Oliver and McNally acknowledge it could be harder to create a sense of community in larger apartment blocks. But Anderson-Oliver reiterates the value of inviting spaces such as sky-bars,

hang-out spaces on different floors and cafes in large buildings. They both believe “soft infrastructure” is vital – for example, organised events and apartment block Facebook pages. This is an edited version of a Domain story by Melissa Howard.

When urban planner Mitra Anderson-Oliver, 33, moved into a 300-dwelling apartment block in Melbourne’s Kew two years ago, she knew she’d have to make some changes. “I decided that the only way apartment living could work for me is if I have a community garden,” she says. She is now part of the new 40-member gardening committee and the “game-changer” communal garden is starting to take shape. As apartment living continues to rapidly rise, Anderson-Oliver, husband Daniel and their son, Heath, 1, are part of a growing trend of vertical communities. “There’s this idea that if you live in an apartment block, you can’t possibly have real community,” Anderson-Oliver says. “I just think that’s so untrue. Just because people live on a street – in a suburb, in a detached house – doesn’t mean that they have community.” She reckons that just as with horizontal living, it’s accidental interactions, supported by “sticky spaces” – communal areas that invite people to stick around – that help form connections. “The common areas of an apartment block are where the community either lives or dies,” she says. “Otherwise you’re just a collection of little boxes and there’s nowhere to actually meet or circulate.” In Sydney, high-density homes such as apartments will soon outnumber detached dwellings. Business administrator Rachael McNally, 38, has lived in a two-bedroom apartment in Bronte for five years. She knows nearly

SPORT Lakes face last place with a heavy heart The wooden spoon is heading to Taylors Lakes. The Lions are locked in the cellar of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group with one round to go and there is not a thing they can do about it. Taylors Lakes’ last-place finish was confirmed in a first innings defeat to Brighton at Beach Oval on Saturday. The Lions were on the back foot from the first ball to the last as they succumbed easier than they would have hoped. It was always going to be a tough ask for Taylors Lakes when it posted a meagre 145 off 67.4 overs. Too much was left to too few for the Lions, with Lachlan Marr leading the way with 44. Wicketkeeper Marr has been the bright spot in the Lions’ batting line-up with three consecutive scores in the 40s.

Jason Denny (24) and captain Jarrod Wakeling (19 not out) also fought hard for the Lions, but could not go on with their starts. Brighton was relatively comfortable in its run chase. Led by 90 not out from opener Ben Johns, the home side coasted past the target two down. Wakeling (2-69 off 20 overs) and Samuel Clark (1-29) gave the Brighton batsmen something to think about, but it was a thankless task trying to defend such a small total. Sitting just three points outside the top six, an outright result was highly desired by Brighton, so they got a wriggle on. After reaching 3-207, the home side opted to declare and chase an outright. A shaky start from Taylors Lakes boosted Brighton’s spirits. The Lions were in trouble on 2-2 and staring a 60-run deficit in the face.

But the Lions found a way to stave off a dreaded outright defeat. Denny (20) and Marr (47) dug in to erase the deficit and chew up important time and overs. Wakeling (30 not out) and Dilshan Kanchana (26) guided Taylors Lakes to safety, ensuring there would be no outright and leaving Brighton three spots outside the top six. It was not enough for Taylors Lakes to avoid the wooden spoon though. The Lions are nine points behind second-last Malvern with only six points on offer when those two sides meet in this Saturday’s final round one-day game at Lionheart Reserve. Calder keeps on track By Lance Jenkinson On paper, it looked to be a tough start to the season for Calder United, but so far it has barely raised a sweat in the NPL Women’s competition. Battles against Bulleen Lions in the community shield and Alamein in the opener of the season proper were looked at as tough initiations into a new season, but Calder registered big wins in both games. They beat Bulleen 3-1 in the traditional welcoming to a new season in the community shield match and backed that up with a runaway 3-0 win over Alamein at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday. “It was a great way to start the season against what we consider good opponents,” Calder United president Eric Psarianos said. “That’s Bulleen and Alamein, two top-four sides from last year, that we’ve beaten in successive weeks.” Even with its ripping form, you can still reserve judgment over whether Calder United is the team to beat at this early stage. We will know a fair bit about Calder’s credentials come 5.30pm on Saturday. Calder will need to lift another notch when it hosts South Melbourne in what promises to be one of the games of the season at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve. Calder and South have been the two dominant forces of Victorian women’s soccer in recent years and there are no signs of that rivalry abating in 2019. Psarianos knows Calder will need to go through South Melbourne if it wants to return to the top. “That’s the big game – it’s going to be a massive one,” he said. “There’s going to be a bit of a build-up because there’s a very good rivalry between the two clubs. “We’re very much looking forward to next week.” After an arm wrestle with Alamein in the first half on Saturday, Calder United turned up the heat in the second half with three unanswered goals. It took a spectacular strike from Catherine Zimmerman to break the deadlock and Calder never looked back. “The first half was fairly even and there were chances on both sides,” Psarianos said. “The girls really stepped up in the second half and played exceptionally well. “We overran them completely.” Alana Burn doubled the Calder United lead in the 68th minute before Zimmerman made it a double of her own with a goal in the 78th. The highlight for Calder was undoubtedly Zimmerman’s performance, who is rated one of the top players in the league. “She’s got a lot of facets to her game,”

Green Gully sets hot pace as pre-season goals fulfilled Green Gully has regained some of the spark it lost towards the back end of the last National Premier League season. Two wins from two starts to begin the new campaign have lifted the dark cloud that hovered over the Cavaliers after last year’s near disaster in the promotion-relegation play-off. Cavaliers general manager Raymond Mamo said it was important for his club to hit the ground running and that he saw some positive signs in a 4-2 win over Heidelberg United at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday. He credits the addition of a number of new leaders to the squad for the immediate turnaround. “Starting on this note is great,” Mamo said. “It’s been quite a long time since we’ve seen that sort of performance from Green Gully. “There’s some leaders added to the team this year and it’s really important because it’s something that we lacked a bit last year.” Green Gully’s victory over Heidelberg was a roller coaster ride. In the first half, both sides had patches of domination before settling on two goals apiece at the break. Green Gully struck first through new recruit Alex Salmon, in the eighth minute, but

Heidelberg hit back two minutes later through Sean Ellis. Heidelberg was gifted the lead through an own goal from Green Gully goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson. After the initial shock, the Cavaliers’ work rate lifted. They found a deserved equaliser through Matthew Fletcher 11 minutes before the break.

“That second [Heidelberg] goal really put us on the back foot a little bit,” Mamo said. “Credit to the boys, though – they kept at it and I thought the last 10 minutes of the first half was ours.” Green Gully came out in the second half with a real vigour. The Cavaliers also took advantage of an extra player after Heidelberg’s Jack Petrie was red-carded for a behind-the-play incident. Soon after the visitors went down to 10 men, Fletcher bobbed up for a second goal for Green Gully to give his side a 3-2 lead. While Heidelberg remained competitive, despite being a man down, Green Gully finally put it to the sword from the penalty spot with a goal through Salmon, his second for the day. “I feel that we were in control of the game,” Mamo said. “Particularly in the second half – I think we were all over them.” With a high turnover in the summer, Green Gully was expected to take some time to mesh. But the first two weeks suggest the pre-season campaign was enough for the players to work each other out. “The new players have clicked in the team,” Mamo said.

“They had a really hard and tough pre-season and I think that’s helped gel the boys together. “It’s a credit to [coaches] Stephen Downes, Steve Laurie and also Darren Welch – they’ve done a fabulous job.” Manny Muscat, in the midfield, was one of the standouts for Green Gully. Jeremy Walker was energetic at right back, while new captain Nick Kalmar pulled the strings in the midfield. Green Gully will face Bentleigh Greens in the third round in a mouth-watering clash of two-win sides at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Friday night. Meanwhile, Melbourne Knights have also made a perfect start to the new season. They celebrated a come-from-behind 4-3 win over newly promoted Altona Magic at Knights Stadium on Friday night. The Knights’ winner came through a headed goal from substitute AJ Inia deep into second-half stoppage time. Eagles hit tip-top form By Lance Jenkinson Sunshine has been the yo-yo team of the Baseball Victoria summer league for more than a decade. One year the Eagles would be playing in division 1, the next they would head straight back to division 2. This summer, they have bucked the trend. After comfortably maintaining its place in the top flight, Sunshine clinched a finals berth weeks ago. Extra cream on top came on Saturday when the Eagles clinched the minor premiership. Sunshine’s nailbiting 3-2 win over Berwick City Cougars at Barclay Reserve sealed the No.1 finals ranking. It was all confirmed when news filtered through that previous ladder leaders Geelong Baycats had lost their final-round game to Waverley Wildcats. Sunshine’s achievement is huge in its first season under coach Stuart Clayton. “We’ve had a really good run in the back half of the season,” Clayton said. “We’ve sort of been on a roll.”

If you had said back in round five that Sunshine would be minor premier, you would have been laughed at. The Eagles were 1-4 and ace pitcher Tayler Rowe was ruled out indefinitely with a knee injury. Rowe made a successful return from that setback last Saturday. Since round five, Sunshine has gone 16-3 with three draws thrown in. The big factor for Sunshine has been starting pitcher Jeremy Young. He was absent in the first month as he tended to Australian under-23 duties, but since he returned, the Eagles’ prospects have improved significantly. “When he [Young] came back, he took over the role of our No.1,” Clayton said. “All the other guys like Adam Irons and Griffin Weir have been working around him, too.” The win over Berwick City on Saturday was a typical Sunshine win. The Eagles put up three runs and let the pitchers go to work. They conceded only two runs in a game that went a marathon 18 innings. While pitching is the key, Clayton is confident that Sunshine has enough quality batters in the

side to produce winning scores. The Young brothers, Jordan and Jeremy, and big-name player Allan de San Miguel are hitting in excess of .300 averages. What is also apparent is the fight within the side to eke out runs at important times. “We’ve been getting runners on and getting hits at the right time,” Clayton said. “Lately, we’ve had some games where we’ve been three or four runs down in the late innings and the boys have not given up and come back and won.” The addition of de San Miguel, a Melbourne Aces star, has been massive for Sunshine. “He plays with the Aces each week, but now they’re finished, he’s back with us,” Clayton said. “He’s fantastic – great around the club, helping out with the juniors and helping me with my first year of coaching.” Clayton can sense excitement in the air at Sunshine ahead of the play-offs. The Eagles will face Geelong Baycats in a best-of-three semi-final series starting tomorrow (Wednesday) night. “They’re a young group and they’re ready to go for our first final,” Clayton said.

Sydenham-Hillside has claimed back-to-back Victorian Turf Cricket Association women’s T20 titles. The best side all season, the Storm delivered the composure needed in the grand final to beat Westmeadows for a second straight season. Storm captain-coach Catherine Morrow said it was a great achievement. “It’s fantastic for the girls, who have worked really hard,” she said. “To go back-to-back is massive … I’m so happy for them.” The Storm didn’t get the win without a fight, with the Warriors fighting all the way. The Storm made 4-84 off its 20 overs after being sent in. Morrow said the total was slightly below the target they had set. “We wanted to make at least 90,” she said. “We’d been sent in on a quite damp pitch from the morning dew and the balls were keeping low. “We ended up having the runs on the board and they had to do the chasing. “At just over four an over, we thought we would be able to hold them.” Brooke Todero was the standout with the bat, playing from the start through to the 16th over. Storm’s opening bowlers did the job early to put their side in the box seat. In need of runs, the Warriors lost frequent wickets and were bowled out for 72. “Our opening bowlers, Hannah Brne and Holly Nagpal, kept it really tight,” Morrow said. “They bowled the first eight overs and the Warriors were about 1-15. “We made it hard for them – it got to over two runs a ball. While the overall shape of the Koleos aligns with that of the X-Trail – and with many others in their bulging market segment – they are easily distinguished elsewhere. Koleos has a much bolder grille highlighted by a large version of the distinctive Renault badge in the centre.

There’s an excellent list of safety features across the range including Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) and Lane Departure Warning. There’s some cost-saving in the entry-level Life with an old-style ignition key and a foot operated parking brake. All higher spec variants have push button start/stop and an electronic parking brake.

Entry and exit is easy and the driver’s seat is wide, supportive and comfortable. The steering wheel is both tilt and reach adjustable. Our test car was the relatively Spartan 2.5-litre petrol entry-level Life. Fuel consumption is listed at 8.1 litres per 100 km. We averaged 9.6 L/100 km during our usual blend of urban, motorway and rural conditions. Expect double figures in exclusively city driving. Suspension is a little harsh and relatively firm without making the ride uncomfortable. Steering is light and direct.

Summing up

Koleos is an attractive, capable family-sized SUV with excellent interior space and a high level of safety equipment. It certainly doesn’t deserve to trail its market-leading competitors to the extent that it does and so is well worth a comparison test drive.
