Keilor’s Gift of great fun The Keilor Gift returns this weekend – bigger than ever. Two years after the event was scrapped due to a lack of funding, the Gift has expanded into a two-day festival across the whole Keilor Village, complete with performances and family attractions on Friday and Saturday before the big race. On Friday, there will be roaming performers in period costumes throughout the village, as well as musicians and a number of stalls. Saturday will feature the athletics and woodchopping at Joe Brown Reserve and a petting zoo and market in the village. Keilor Gift organising committee chairperson Hayden Kelly said the event was a great way to showcase Keilor. “The number of entries in the events are certainly higher than last year, so that’s always exciting,” Mr Kelly said. “It’s the only true community event that we have this side of the gully, I guess, so the community looks forward to it every year. For the traders and the sports club, it brings in some revenue that we wouldn’t otherwise have so it’s a great way to kick off the year.” The Keilor Gift Carnival will take place on February 15 and 16, with the headline race to be run at 8.45pm on Saturday night, followed by fireworks. A decade-long push to have the speed limit along the Old Calder Highway reduced has finally borne fruit. A 40km/h school zone between Hislop Street and Arabin Street was implemented a week before students returned. these zones in place, so why not Keilor,” Ms Jennison said. “Keilor Primary School has almost 500 students, obviously not all use the crossing, but a lot of parents pick their children up so that’s extra cars on the road. “Hopefully this also helps with congestion.”

Ms Jennison said the move was no solo effort and had the support of the community. “This has been an ongoing push for 10 years,” she said. “We’ve spoken to traders and we think community sentiment is behind it.” While pleased with the result the Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association said they will continue to push for more safety measures. President John Jennison said a permanent reduction in speed limit should be considered. “We’re trying to get VicRoads to think about lowering the speed limit from 60 to

50,” Mr Jennison said. “There’s a lot of traffic from the Calder Freeway which uses the road as an alternative. They rarely travel at 60 kilometres an hour” Last year a 61-year-old Kings Park man died in hospital after he was struck by a car while attempting to cross the road at the village. Following the incident VicRoads said they would review the speed zone on Old Calder Highway, east of Bonfield Street. VicRoads didn’t comment when contacted by Star Weekly.

Keilor jumps into rabbit problem By Tate Papworth Keilor residents are hopping mad over Brimbank Parks’ feral rabbit problem. More than 100 residents have signed a petition circulating Keilor Village calling on the state government to address the issue. The petition by visitors and users of Brimbank Park, Horseshoe Bend Farm and surrounding parks areas will be handed to Niddrie MP Ben Carroll, with the hopes of drawing it to the attention of the government. Residents say there is an urgent need to

address severe erosion and land degradation of the parks due to the ever-increasing rabbit population. The petitioners are asking the government to instruct Parks Victoria to assess their management strategy for the issue and to develop a permanent and integrated plan to achieve long-term and effective, humane eradication. Parks Victoria district manager western Melbourne Craig Bray did not say whether rabbit numbers at Brimbank Park had increased when asked.

“Introduced pest animals such as rabbits are an issue across the whole of Victoria and have been for many years,” he said. Mr Bray said Parks Victoria regularly monitors its control methods. “Parks Victoria has an ongoing control program for rabbits across its estate, including

at Brimbank Park, and continually monitors and reviews these. The main focus of control is twofold; habitat and warren destruction and baiting,” he said. “Rabbit control occurs ongoing throughout the year with different methods utilised in different seasons.” However the petitioners believe current methods aren’t working and more needs to be done to preserve the area. The petition can be found in a number of shops in Keilor Village including Senserricks Fruit and Flowers.

Cavalier spaniels kings for a day Cavaliers will be letting their fur down every month at Brooklyn’s new dog park. The Cavalier Meet-Up in Melbourne’s West group was established in 2016 for Cavalier King Charles spaniels and their families. Co-ordinator Karen Hollis said more than 40 dogs turned up to last month’s meeting at Brooklyn Dog Park. “The dogs had great fun testing out the mini agility equipment, exploring the community toy box, chasing each other around and keeping their humans entertained,” she said.

“The park includes a separate ‘time out’ area for small and older dogs – this was great. “Cavaliers are active and sociable dogs. They are always happy. “They really enjoy playing and interacting with other dogs, especially cavaliers. “The group gives the owners the opportunity to get out and about and do things with their dogs in a safe, friendly environment.” Natalie Hough, whose seven-month-old Banksy has nearly 500 followers on Instagram, said he loved his first outing to the dog park.

“It was his first cav meet-up with the group in general and it was also his first time at the Brooklyn Dog Park,” she said. “We just felt super happy because all the other cavs were friendly and of a similar size, so he was just in heaven.” The group meets at Brooklyn on the second Sunday of the month from 10am. Brimbank council wants community feedback to guide the rejuvenation of JR Parsons Reserve in Sunshine. The council wants to develop a community plan for the reserve, which has two sports fields and is home to Sunshine Park Tennis Club, Grand United Cricket Club and Albion Football Club. The call for community feedback comes after a story in last week’s Star Weekly that highlighted the dilapidated clubrooms of Grand United, including holes in the roof, no female changeroom facilities and asbestos. Grand United Cricket Club said last week plans to upgrade facilities in 2016-17 had been pushed back until at least 2023. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was a chance for the community to tell council what it wanted to see at the reserve. “We need your help to make the reserve better and to keep pace with the community’s changing needs,” Cr Congreve said. “The feedback will help us to understand what will make JR Parsons Reserve more useful to the community, and a more attractive destination for leisure and recreation use. “It will help us to develop clear directions for the future upgrade and renewal of existing facilities and spaces within the reserve and, where required, may recommend the development of a new multi-purpose sporting and community facility.” Feedback can be provided at brimbank. vic.gov.au/haveyoursay or at Brimbank libraries or community centres until March 1. Police roll out cameras

Scam warning on robocalls

More than 11,000 cameras will be rolled out to all frontline police and protective services officers by 2020, with Brimbank next on the list. The cameras will capture audio and video interactions between police and the public, as well as capture video evidence at crime scenes. Victoria Police said the cameras will help police to provide transparency.

“Officers will turn on their body-worn cameras when they are exercising police powers, collecting evidence, a situation where recording would provide transparency to a police interaction and when they feel there is a need to record,” Victoria Police said in a statement. “Cameras will be turned on by the police officer when they are undertaking duties such as effecting an arrest, applying use of force, issuing an infringement, conducting vehicle stops, witnessing an incident, undertaking an alcohol or drug test or managing someone in custody.” Police claim the cameras should also help improve community safety. “The introduction of body worn cameras is expected to deliver benefits for Victoria Police and the community,” Victoria Police said. “The benefits include improved capture of video and audio evidence, increased early

A phone scam claiming to be from the National Broadband Network (NBN) is circulating in Brimbank. The robocalls tell residents their home phones and internet will be disconnected within 24 hours because the NBN has become available in their area. Victims are then asked to press one to speak to a technician and discuss the matter further. The scammers are known to call the same number multiple times. Australian Competition and Consumer Commission deputy chair Delia Rickard said there were a number of ways to identify the scammers. “NBN will never phone you out of the blue to try to sign you up to a service over its network,” she said. “NBN is a wholesaler, meaning they don’t sell direct to the public. If you get an unsolicited call like this, it’s a big red flag that you’re dealing with a scammer. “NBN will also never call you to remotely ‘fix’ a problem with your computer or to request personal information, like your Medicare number or your bank account numbers. Don’t listen to the reasons they give you for needing this information. “Finally, if someone ever asks you to pay for a service using iTunes gift cards, it is 100 per cent a scam. Legitimate businesses, especially those like NBN, will never ask you to pay for anything in this way.” Tate Papworth

A big shot at robot glory By Ewen McRae A group of Copperfield College students have designed and engineered themselves all the way to robotics national championship titles – now they’re ready to test their machines against the best in the world. The college’s Vex Robotics club was started four years ago and has grown strongly in both participation and performance, culminating in wins in December’s national championships in Melbourne. The wins – Tournament Champions and Excellence Award (High School) – have gained the team entry into the world championships in Kentucky in April. Team captain Spencer Vaughan said the growth of the program and the changes in their robotics and design work had been staggering. “You can see this wave and trend of improvement and growth in the build quality, the programming and the teamwork over time,” he said. “Every year it gets better and better. We think what we have now is pretty good, but we always have to look for ways to make it better and try and stay ahead of the curve.” While teachers are able to help out in small ways, projects are designed and led by the students, with a team of designers helping in the early planning stages and then the whole group working to build, improve and then drive the robot. Team member Anthony Le said the knowledge within the team was its biggest asset when it came time to compete. “We tried a lot of things in the early days, and we now have a lot of knowledge of what is good and what is not,” he said. “We contacted a lot of teams from other countries and started to gather knowledge about how they do things

… what we have now is a hundred times better than what we started with.” While Vex Robotics has a relatively small community in Australia, it is a big deal internationally, particularly in the US where thousands of teams are involved. Spencer said it would be an exciting challenge to test their machines against the best. “There’s hundreds of teams in each state over there trying to get to this point, so the

standard will be very high,” he said. “The stuff they do over there is different to what we’ve encountered here, so we’ll definitely have to up our game in order to compete.” The team is looking for sponsors to help subsidise the Kentucky trip and give it the best chance of success. Enclosed dog run on agenda Community demand has prompted the Brimbank council to consider turning a Taylors Lakes easement into a fully enclosed dog off-leash area. The council says it has received several requests from residents over recent years for a fully enclosed facility within the transmission easement which runs between Kings Road and Sandpiper Drive. The easement is currently an off-leash area, however the council wants to formalise a large portion into a fully enclosed facility. New fences and gates would be installed, along with a water fountain (for humans and dogs), seating and tree planting. The council will also investigate adding future facilities such as a small separate enclosure for older/smaller, less confident dogs and a small shaded pavilion. It is anticipated these will be carried out within the next two years, however work is subject to planning and budget approval. Last year the state government pledged $5 million to build up to 15 new off-leash dog parks across Melbourne, including Brimbank if re-elected. Testing starts for airport link By Tate Papworth Preliminary planning work for the Melbourne Airport rail link is being ramped up, with soil testing to help inform the detailed business case for the project having begun. The testing involves geotechnical drilling, which is used to establish ground conditions and soil quality. The process involves drilling boreholes up to 25 centimetres in diameter and 45 metres deep to collect soil and rock samples.

The investigations are being conducted at six sites around the M80 Ring Road in Tullamarine and near the Maribyrnong River to guide further planning of the preferred Sunshine route. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the project was a major win for the state. “We’ve made sure the Airport Rail Link will benefit all Victorians – delivering a new super-hub at Sunshine and paving the way for fast rail to the regions,” she said.

Summer classic beckons Food trucks, refreshing drinks and Chris Hemsworth will see the summer off at Sunshine Plaza. The shopping centre is rolling out an outdoor cinema that will screen three films. Sunshine Plaza centre manager Ian Simpson said the events would be a nice opportunity for local families to enjoy movies under the stars. “The west often misses out on these types of events, and sometimes people don’t have the opportunity to travel across town to enjoy a night out like this,” he said. “With that in mind, we thought let’s bring a classic summer activity to Sunshine and showcase the suburb.” Screening on Saturday, February 23, Oscar-winning Ang Lee film Life of Pi is set to captivate audiences, while the action-packed Avengers: Infinity War, starring Hemsworth, will screen on Friday, March 1. The Greatest Showman will screen on Saturday, March 2. The Snag Society and The Cheeky Pint will povide food and drink.

Dessert and the kids are not forgotten with frozen yogurt van Yogurddiction on site for the screening of Life of Pi, while classic movie snacks including popcorn and fairy floss will be available to purchase on the other two evenings. Patrons are encouraged to bring picnic blankets, but these will be strictly no BYO alcohol or glass events. Synthetic grass will be laid out and limited deck chairs and bean bags will be available. The inflatable cinema screen will be set up in the Plaza’s carpark. Tickets are now available for purchase via Eventbrite at a cost of $12 for adults and $9 for children. It will help us transform the way people live, work and travel right across Victoria.” The planning work will inform the design of the new rail line and how it will be built, with a further phase of testing to occur later this year. Expert technical advisors started initial environmental investigations in late 2018, with ecological surveys to identify any protected flora and fauna.

Construction of Melbourne Airport Rail Link is scheduled to start in 2022, subject to required approvals. Construction is expected to take up to nine years. The link will run from the CBD to Melbourne Airport via Sunshine and form the north-western section of the Suburban Rail Loop. Brimbank council has said the establishment of a “super hub” in Sunshine will be a “game changer” for the municipality. The total cost of the rail project is estimated to be in the range of $8 billion to $13 billion.

Cooking up west’s best Fancy a fromage a trois or dumpling showdown between Asian and Italian? Foodies will be spoilt for choice when 25 events are held across the west as part of next month’s Eat Drink Westside program. The program was launched last Thursday at Newport’s Heart of Hall Cooking School, which has teamed up with Williamstown’s Gem Pier Seafoods to host The Drunken Sailor cooking class with nautical-inspired cocktails. The regional event, part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, is a partnership between Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley and Wyndham councils. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the program showcased small businesses,

producers, cafes, restaurants, wine bars and shops across the west. “From grape-stomping to seafood showcases and foodie master classes, Eat Drink Westside is guaranteed to surprise and delight the senses,” he said. Michael Wright has never been too far from the action – whether it’s an emergency or on the football field. The Kurunjang father has been a volunteer firefighter of more than two decades and has coached football at Burnside Heights and Caroline Springs clubs. He was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016. He got through the first stage, but it returned last year. The sports community has rallied around the family, including wife Julie and kids Lauchlan and Kaitlyn. Family friend and Burnside Heights member Justin Peagram said a benefit dinner to support the family had been organised. An online crowdfunding page has already raised about $1600. “It has been hard on the family,” Mr Peagram told Star Weekly. “While things play out, they are suffering financially. “Currently, Julie is unable to work and Michael has been hospitalised since the start of the year. “He was home for Christmas, but unfortunately he needs around-the-clock care. “Michael has been with us for about four years as a junior coach and prior to that he was with Caroline Springs.” Lauchlan plays under-19s football and Kaitlyn plays netball for Burnside Heights. “It’s a very sad situation but we’re grateful to see the community rally behind this family,” Mr Peagram said. By Ewen McRae Christian Ambesi has worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Robbie Williams – and soon he’ll be notching up another career highlight to match, and even beat, those experiences. The Caroline Springs 17-year-old is busy rehearsing for the new production of West Side Story after landing the key role of Baby John in the blockbuster production, which will run at Melbourne Arts Centre. He said it was a dream come true to be part of something so big. “I was really overwhelmed when I heard I’d landed the part,” he said. “It was so unexpected … I’m so young, I just went into the audition process with nothing to lose. “There were lots of tears from family when we found out – it’s definitely the highlight of my career so far.” Christian has been working towards this moment for some time, after taking up dancing when he was four and continuing to follow his dreams regardless of the obstacles. “The feeling it gave me when I dance is what inspired me to pursue it, and even from a young age I knew that dancing made me happy,” he said. “It was a bit of an escape for me. Through primary school, I had some troubles, and the start of high school wasn’t great at all. Being a male dancer doing ballet and jazz was looked down on by some kids at school. But I always turned back to it because I could see where I wanted to be.” Christian’s career took an upward turn at age 11 when he was involved in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies and then, a few years later, he got to work with UK superstar Robbie Williams on his 2014 tour.

While he loved both experiences, the chance to tour internationally as part of an acclaimed production is what he hopes will see him fulfill his dream of a career on New York’s Broadway stages. “Performing on Broadway has been my dream for as long as I can remember, so this is a bit of a stepping stone. We do the shows

Much-needed funding could soon be flowing into restoring contaminated waterways. The federal Opposition has promised a $200 million investment in cleaning up urban waterways, including Maribyrnong River catchments and tributaries, as well as Jackson’s Creek, Deep Creek and Steele Creek. An online petition to help make waterways priorities is available to sign, opening up the way for community groups to seek access to funding under Labor’s pledge. Funding will be available for building wetlands to capture, clean and filter stormwater; revegetation and tree planting along corridors; and employment of indigenous rangers. Funding will also be available for citizen science and education programs along creeks and corridors; and turning urban waterways back to creeks and rivers. Opposition leader and Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten and Opposition environment and water spokesman Tony Burke visited Footscray last month to make the pledge. Gellibrand MP Tim Watts said restoration work would be driven by the community. “We have been trying to put community groups at the heart of this,” Mr Watts said. “They are the ones doing the hard work over decades.” Tate Papworth

Dozens of local children will not get a game with Footscray’s Little League team this year because of a new image to be imposed by Footscray Football Club officials, a former Little League manager claimed this week. Mr Don MacKellin, manager of the Footscray Little League for the past five years, claimed that the recent appointment of a St. Kilda supporter as the new Little League manager is a deliberate attempt to professionalise children’s football.

A vast, empty block of land on the corner of Fitzgerald Rd and the Princes Freeway is the only reminder of crashing cars and roaring engines that fascinated thousands at the Brooklyn Speedway, known also as the Melbourne Speedbowl. An eerie silence envelopes the land that was once the meeting place for caravan, bike and car races and the thunderous noise of the “smash-up derby.”

The notorious level crossing at St Albans Railway Station, which divides Main Road East from Main Road West, has been voted Melbourne’s worst traffic ‘red spot’ in a survey. About 1900 motorists responded to the survey, which was conducted by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV).

A teenage girl lured to a park in St Albans was bashed for half an hour while her attackers filmed the assault for the internet. Police allege the 16-year-old girl was invited to Glenmaggie Reserve about 8.30pm on Sunday, January 18, when she was met by three teenagers – one as young as 13 – and a woman.

MY BRIMBANK Scott Wearne is a AAA accredited golf professional. After touring the world, he’s returned home to Keilor to coach the next generation of stars. He spoke with Tate Papworth.

I started playing golf out here when I was a young fella at 10 years old. I played around the world for a little while and for the past eight years I’ve been back here coaching. You’ve been around the world – what brought you back here? The people out here are great, everyone is really nice. It’s a really relaxed place to work. I love teaching the kids too, that’s my major priority. What could be done better? It would be nice to have shelter on the range for the kids so they could play when it’s raining or in the winter. It’s a great facility out here. What sort of coach are you? I coach everyone from the beginners to

the elite. My main passion is coaching the kids after school and on Saturday morning. It’s all based around technique. Hopefully people can come to me with a problem and I can solve it. I think the best way to learn is on-course. It’s been a long career, what’s the highlight? Highlight was winning the Calgary Open in 1998, but meeting people out there was also great. But my next highlight will be seeing the kids I’ve coached come up and hopefully do better than me. Would you like to see more kids give golf a go? So the schools out this way can get a grant of up to $3000 to bring kids out here and I’m amazed not more do it. There’s some 80 schools out this way and I only teach about two of them. I’d love to see more schools at least get the kids out once a year and give it a try.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir’s take on fusion confusion Consider The Sauce and one of its regular dining pals had been vaguely talking about a visit to Fork & Fingers to try its Indian fusion food for more than a year. In the end, though, it was with four other regular members of Team CTS that the deed was done. As the arrangement were being made, one of them quipped: “Butter chicken lasagne – that place has piqued my interest. I feel it’s either going to be really good or terrible.” Did our experience of that dish, and the food in general, attain for us such polarised extremes? No. Perhaps it would’ve been preferable for it to have done so. Fork & Fingers lives in a long room done out lovely, featuring exposed brick and all sorts of visual stimuli such as posters and murals. Half the menu here is dedicated to familiar Indian fare such as paani puri and beef madras. But the other half is dedicated to Indian fusion dishes – and it’s for them we’re here. Here’s what we have: Skinny vegan tofu meatballs ($14) are two spheres of tofu and vegan cheese. They sit on a salan gravy, are topped by grated radish and are good in a crumbly way – though the flavours are low volume (this will become a recurrent theme). Crab roll with Indian pesto and asparagus ($16) is another good-looking dish. Going by the texture, we conclude there is real crab, though there is no discernible asparagus. Bery Indian falafel ($12) taste less like

So what of the butter chicken lasagne ($20)? I find it a muddle of muted flavours that cancel each other out. Lamb vindaloo tacos ($19) are simply that and good in a no-fuss way. Lamb rogan josh shepherd’s pie ($19), like the lasagne, falls short of expectations. It’s OK, but the lamb filling is rather dull. A lot of thought and work has gone into creating these dishes. But I can’t help but feel that it has been misdirected. I was crying out for more striking flavours, a much higher degree of zing, big hits of tongue-tingling excitement. We’ve had a lovely night. Proud tradition of the Keilor Gift continues The Keilor Gift has a rich tradition, starting back in the 1920s when it was known as the Keilor Cup and featured running, cycling and novelty events. The inaugural Keilor Gift was held on February 11, 1933, and has since gone from strength to strength, with runners from all over vying for part of more than $30,000 prize money. Staged at Joe Brown Recreation Reserve on Old Calder Highway, the Keilor Gift events kick off at 12.45pm on Saturday, February 16, but there’s plenty happening on the preceding Friday in the nearby Keilor Village. People dressed in period costumes and roving musicians and other performers will bring a sense of occasion to the upcoming Keilor Gift, while a delightful lunch can be had at one of the many restaurants and cafes in the village. The historic Keilor Hotel, the oldest family-run hotel in Melbourne, offers a leisurely lunch or, for something a bit more active, get the gang together for an afternoon game of barefoot bowls at Keilor Bowls Club – and then stay on for an affordable dinner with the family. The fun continues at the centre on the Saturday before the Gift starts. There’ll be more entertainment, plus a petting farm which is an ever-popular attraction for kids of all ages.

Committee chairperson Hayden Kelly says the Keilor Gift is a prestigious event, winning the Victorian Runners & Trainers “Meeting of the Year” award three times. Bowled over by big day By Lance Jenkinson In what could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, cricketers from Sunshine United lapped up their chance to play on the hallowed turf of the MCG last week. The Tigers, who play in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s top flight senior division, featured in the Regional Twenty20 Big Bash final against Berwick, going down by 41 runs. Irrespective of the result, it was going to be an unforgettable day for both sides as they got the chance to take centre stage in the middle of the ‘G, something normally reserved for state and international cricketers. Tigers opening batsman Neeten Chouhan said he was struck by the enormity of the ground when he walked out to bat. “For me, and speaking to everyone that played that day, it’s definitely a dream come true,” he said. “Just to walk out there, you get a sense of awe in a way.” Sunshine United’s path to the MCG was strewn with tough battles. Both sides had to run the gauntlet to feature in the final, but it was well worth the long qualification process. “We worked it out that you had to win 10 games in a row just to get to that point and that’s what we did,” Chouhan said. “The fact that we got there was the great experience anyway.” While some bemoan the length of the professional Big Bash season, local cricketers are not as exposed to the game’s shortest format enough. Sunshine United’s players have taken to the format like a duck to water. The Tigers have a number of players suited to the entertaining crash and bash style of play. “We try and get the game moving along, so that helped,” Chouhan said. Sunshine United was behind the eight ball early in the final. Berwick, affiliated with the Dandenong District Cricket Association, set a massive task, posting 5-161 off its 20 overs. Matthew Chasemore (67 off 35) and Jordan Cleland (51 off 40) showed no signs of nerves for Berwick as they blasted the Tigers attack. ■ On that subject, water safety has never been more important as we approach the tail end of another tragic summer on Victorian beaches. One death is too many. People ignoring flags and directions from lifesavers is just reckless and should be punished accordingly. Schools are about to hold their annual swimming carnivals and I am sure the number of students who can’t swim is alarming. Not everyone can be Shane Gould, Ian Thorpe or Trevor Hendy but the old ‘can swim enough to save myself’ should be a bare minimum. I am all in favour of the school swimming certificate being compulsory. ■ The local soccer derby between Werribee City and Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club last weekend united the rivals in a common goal – to highlight the plight of jailed soccer star Hakeem Al-Araibi. A great gesture by both clubs and their supporters. Soccer in Wyndham is in a very interesting place with the Western Melbourne A League team only months away from playing. I am wondering what role all local clubs will play with the new franchise, especially in the first few years before it calls Tarneit home. I think they can all have a very healthy co existence. ■ The Melbourne Aces might be on the move from Melbourne Ballpark in Altona and that is no big surprise. The club is looking to relocate a number of its home games to Albert Park which is a more central and accessible location. There is nothing wrong with the Altona stadium unless you actually want to get there. Baseball has tried the Whitten Oval and the Showgrounds with mixed results but I hope this one works.

The Tigers were in deep trouble at 4-37 before a revival was sparked by the middle order. Thomas Duxson settled Sunshine United with 34 off 37, before Amarathunga (37 off 27) and Leigh Sheridan (21 off 18) tried their best to pull back the required run rate. The Tigers finished on 7-120 off its 20 overs.

While the loss hurt, this game will go down as one of the great days in the Tigers’ history. “It was a big moment for the club,” Chouhan said. “It’s literally putting the club’s name in the whole of Victoria’s minds for that day, which was good.”

Deer Park full of confidence heading into the finals Deer Park and Melbourne produced a home-and-away game worthy of a final in the Bowls Victoria premier division at Ballarat Road on Saturday. The Parkers went down 74-71 in a thriller, but left no doubt about their contender status, picking up two rink wins, tieing another and only let down by one rink, which ultimately cost them glory. Parkers president Neil Cromie was enthralled by the quality of bowls on show from two finals-bound teams. “It was a brilliant game, absolutely brilliant,” he said. “The standard of bowls, the shots played and how tight it was all day long, it was just a brilliant game to watch. “Unfortunately we had one rink go down by eight and the others just couldn’t quite cover it.” Brett Mahoney’s eight-shot defeat proved costly for Deer Park. It was a rare off day for the Victorian representative and his rink.

The Parkers still managed to reap five points from the match, moving them closer to clinching a finals berth. Aaron Wood (up three) and James Pearce (up two) were victorious, while Chris Ball had a tie. Despite losing overall, Cromie was confident the Parkers are a genuine shot at this year’s premiership, going by this performance. “We don’t fear anyone,” he said. “With the standard of bowls that we’ve played, the quality of the play, you’ve got to have confidence going into finals.” With finals just about locked up, Deer Park has turned its attention to making a play for a top-two finish for a finals double chance. “This season that double chance could make a difference for a side,” Cromie said. “If you’re third or fourth and you have a bit of an off day, you’re out. “If you finish first or second and have a bit of an off day, you can always redeem yourself the next week.

“It’s not impossible to win it from third or fourth, but it does make it harder.” Deer Park will travel to play bottom-of-theladder Whittlesea on Saturday. The Parkers will be red-hot favourites going in, but Cromie is still wary. “They have struggled a bit this season being the new side up, which is always challenging,” Cromie said. “By the same token, they’ve got nothing to lose now and can go for broke.” In division 2, Keilor earned a split of the rinks against Aberfeldie CBC, but lost 85-76 overall. By Lance Jenkinson St Albans Saints will head into a new National Premier League 2 west season on Saturday with the pain of last year’s horrible ending fresh in their minds. For 28 weeks last campaign, the Saints rode a wave of positive emotion, exceeding the expectations dictated by the club’s budget and playing roster. Saints coach Kruni Razov was proud to see his side “over achieve” by running second to a star-studded Altona Magic after the home-and-away rounds, but it did nothing to relieve him of the bitter taste that was left in his mouth after their disastrous ending in the promotion playoffs. Razov made no bones of the fact that he was embarrassed by the 4-1 defeat to Moreland City that denied his side a trip to AAMI Park for the spot in the promotion final. If the Saints players thought they could simply forget about the pain and unfulfilment of that day, they were mistaken. Razov played back the game for his players at their Australia Day weekend pre-season camp in the hope that it would motivate them for the season ahead and used it as a teaching tool so it is not replicated this season. “They weren’t happy when they were shown it,” he said. “It’s the first time a lot of them had seen the game since then. “I wanted to remind them that you’re only remembered by the last game of your season and everyone remembers us getting whitewashed that day against Moreland City. “Hopefully 12 months down the track, if we get that opportunity again, we can be better for that experience and that’s the reason why I showed it. “They got so far and they did really well, but they let themselves down on that day.” Despite having to relive the Moreland City game, the St Albans players got back to work at the pre-season camp and continued the momentum they have built over a strong pre-season. Razov is adamant the side will hit the ground running when they visit Whittlesea Ranges for the season opener on Saturday afternoon. In an intra club game at the weekend, Razov could sense a real competitiveness within the squad, but also a strong camaraderie for a team that has had a lot of moving parts over summer. “The players are hungry,” Razov said. St Albans added seven new players to the first team with eight filing out of the exit door. The Saints targeted recruits with mental toughness, so if they are in a situation like that Moreland City game again, they should be better equipped. “We’ve tried to look for more mentally stronger players,” Razov said. “Get some winners in, those who will stand up when we’re 2-1 down or 3-1 down and have

Taylors Lakes has one hand on the wooden spoon in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group. The Lions were hammered by Altona and slipped nine points back from second-last Malvern with two games to play. Chasing Altona’s 253, Taylors Lakes was bowled out for 136 at Lionheart Reserve on Saturday. The shining lights with the bat for the Lions were Lachlan Marr (43) and Mick Brne (36). Taylors Lakes will be out to snap its four-game losing streak when at Brighton on Saturday.

National Premier League soccer starts this weekend. Melbourne Knights hit the road on Friday to face Oakleigh Cannons at Jack Edwards Reserve. Green Gully Cavaliers will meet Altona Magic at Paisley Park on Saturday afternoon. The annual community shield match will take place between Calder United and FC Bulleen Lions at Green Gully Reserve on Friday night. The FFA Cup is also in full swing. On Saturday afternoon, Keilor Wolves will host Wyndham United at Green Gully Reserve at 2pm, while Balmoral will host Hampton Park United Sparrows at Springside Recreation Reserve at 3pm.

Dealing, these days, mainly with SUVs that would run a mile rather than tackle tough terrain, it was good to get behind the wheel of a genuine off-road wagon in the shape of the Isuzu MU-X. While celebrating a decade of business in Australia, as well as noting feedback from local customers, Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) has upgraded its D-Max utility and MU-X seven-seat sports utility vehicle to maintain growth in two of the most competitive market segments – one-tonne ute and large SUV. The D-Max ute has come in for most work, with cues being taken from its MU-X SUV mate. Both come in LS-M, LS-U and LS-T variants, the ute with an SX strain added. Manual or automatic versions are on offer with two or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $42,900, plus on-road costs, for the entry-level MU-X LS-M 4x2 auto and top out at $56,200 for the LS-T 4x4 auto. The latter was on test. Styling ‘Hold the chrome’ appears to be the mantra styling whizzes have worked with, the MU-X far from fleshed out with unnecessary tacky shiny bits. The frontal décor, for example, is limited to simple trapezoidal radiator surrounds with the Isuzu brand mark to the fore. The latest in hi-tech LED daytime running lights and bi-LED automatic levelling projector headlamps flank the stylish set-up, while out the back, extra-bright LED taillights help to keep the MU-X in plain sight of any other road user day or night.
