Soccer kids booted By Ewen McRae Five Brimbank children have been de-registered from Green Gully Soccer Club after a dispute between parents and the club’s board. The parents of the children received de-registration letters following last year’s club annual general meeting, during which a vote of no confidence in the club’s board was passed by a 44-22 majority. The parents claim that the board did not stand down following the vote. In the following days, the parents tried to gather a petition with enough support to force another general meeting to push through changes to the board. The parents say their children were de-registered as a way of removing the parents’ voting rights and squashing the petition. One parent, David Catania, said the de-registrations were contrary to the aims of Football Federation Victoria (FFV).

“The way it is set up within the FFV, is they want every parent to have a vote in the direction that their club takes,” Mr Catania said. “To stand up and vote at an AGM … to then be kicked out, or de-registered or discriminated against because you voted in a way that they didn’t want, is pretty appalling. “The kids were devastated. They’ve been with their mates for six or seven years now … to be told that they’ve been de-registered and they can’t continue with their team and they have to go to another club is pretty heartbreaking.” Another parent, who did not wish to be named, said the de-registrations were done to silence their voices. “It’s a scare campaign, and people have now asked to remove their names off the general meeting notice (the petition),” they said. “They’ve de-registered five children in total, who had already made it for next season … we’d paid our deposits. “We got a letter from them saying that due to our conduct, and causing rifts within the club, that they’ve decided to de-register our children.” The club declined to comment. But a copy of the de-registration letter obtained by Star Weekly outlines some of its

reasons for the de-registrations of the young players. “The board formed the view that your recent conduct serves to undermine the club,” it states. “Your behaviour is self-interested, disruptive towards the orderly management of the club and has the potential to create rifts between people. It does not serve to benefit the interests of the club as a whole.

“While your interests as a parent are important, they do not take precedence over all the other interests associated with the club.” The parents have taken their claims to FFV, which found no wrongdoing on the part of the club. “We do not consider the actions amount to discrimination or harassment,” an FFV findings report states.

“It is an unfortunate consequence of the contractual capacity of junior ‘members’ that they may be punished due to the breakdown of the relationship between their legal guardians and the club. “Football Victoria is not obliged to intervene in this matter.” The parents say they will continue their battle.

Air wing acts on motorbike blitz By Tate Papworth

said. “Now we’ve got the air wing on board, that job becomes a lot easier and allows us to follow them for longer periods.” Motorcyclists have been heavily targeted by Brimbank Highway Patrol this summer and Sergeant Joannidis said the results have been exceptional. “We’ve managed to intercept nine stolen motorbikes in the past month,” he said. “We were able to intercept them while they were stopped at lights. Given how difficult it is to catch just one, a result of nine stolen bikes off the road and returned to their owners is significant.”

Brimbank Highway Patrol will enlist the help of Victoria Police’s air wing as part of a continuing crackdown on stolen motorbikes. Operation Endo will begin in February, with police helicopters to follow riders attempting to evade police. Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Bill Joannidis said it will make the job of local officers a lot easier. “It’s so hard to catch even one bike because they don’t have plates and they don’t stop,” he

Three motorcyclists also had their bikes impounded for driving while their licence was suspended. Sergeant Joannidis said local results from the statewide Operation Roadwise were also pleasing. The operation, which ran from December 14 to January 6, focused on reducing

road trauma and raising awareness around road user behaviour. “Pleasingly we had no fatal collisions recorded during this high risk period and only five serious injury collisions, which is very good for any 20 day period,” he said. Police conducted more than 400 preliminary breath tests throughout the operation. Sixteen drug or drunk drivers were detected. More than 700 traffic offences were also detected, with police impounding 49 vehicles for excessive speed, driving while suspended and drink driving.

Giannoula Panagiotopoulos has lived a life of adventure, friendship and kindness. The much-loved grandmother was the toast of Brimbank last month as friends and family helped her celebrate her 100th birthday. Giannoula was born in the Greek village of Chrysohori in 1918 and from a very early age had to learn considerable strength and fortitude. She married her husband, Fotios, in 1945 and moved to Australia in 1955. Giannoula’s daughter, Olympia Panagiotopoulos, said the move to Australia wasn’t any easy decision for her parents. “Like many people of that era, my parents made the courageous decision to leave their homeland for the prosperity of their family, working many jobs to support their children, while struggling with the contrasts of language and culture, trying to maintain their heritage, adapt to their new environment,” she said.

Brawl race factor downplayed By Tate Papworth A brawl that erupted in a St Albans street before Christmas had nothing to do with racial tensions, according to a leading member of the Vietnamese community. Vietnamese Community in Australia (VCA) – Victorian Chapter vice president Dinh Tran said he believed the Alfrieda Street fight stemmed from a miscommunication. “I don’t think this was a racial fight. It just happened to be in St Albans where the majority

of business owners are Vietnamese – it could’ve happened anywhere,” he said. “After the incident at Christmas, we knocked on doors of nearby restaurants to see how the incident was related. “The owner of the shop where this happened told us he didn’t feel like it was a gang attack. It was some kids asking for cigarettes. “A few words were exchanged back and forward and it escalated.” Mr Tran said he’s had talks with Sudanese community leaders since the brawl.

“At this point, the VCA are engaged in constructive communication with Sudanese community leaders and discussing how we can … work together,” he said. “We believe the South Sudanese community is facing a similar challenge that the Vietnamese community faced when we first arrived in Australia … we feel that we can support each other and foster a great relationship. “We will not let past incidents affect the important social cohesion of our tolerant and multicultural community.”

Brimbank council and Victoria Police will also be invited to attend conversations in the near future. Mr Tran said saturation media coverage surrounding African young people had helped spread misinformation and unwarranted fear. “I think the media has exaggerated the issue,” he said. “We can’t stop that, but as a community we can work together and find ways to improve our community.”

Sunshine’s baby face Ruby Belle Rowan is one of the first babies delivered at Sunshine Hospital in 2019. Parents Gabriella and Cory Rowan welcomed their first daughter last Tuesday afternoon. Cory, said it was an exciting time for the couple and their three-year-old son, Isaac. “We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome our first daughter,” he said. “Isaac is very excited to be a big brother and has promised to look after her.” Ruby is one of the first of many children set to be born at Sunshine Hospital this year with the Joan Kirner Women and Children’s Hospital scheduled to open in May. The $200 million building will significantly bolster the hospital’s maternity capabilities through the addition of 237 beds in new and refurbished accommodation, 20 maternity delivery rooms, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics. Last year, staff at the hospital delivered

more than 5000 babies, including a number of months in which more than 500 babies were born. The high number of births meant that the hospital’s infrastructure and staff were pushed to the limit. The new hospital will allow for more than 7000 births a year, alleviating the strain. Tate Papworth

Swift gift for St Albans The St Albans Gift is ready to light up summer once again, with the 11th Gift this week. The big day, highlighted by a suite of track events, will happen at St Albans Sports Club this Saturday, with 11 events across nearly six hours of racing from 3pm. Organiser Lisa-Marie Psaila said the event’s appeal was growing. “In the past we’ve had a good turnout of athletes and their families and supporters, but we’re hoping this year to make it a great day for the wider community,” she said. “We’ve put a big focus on family entertainment this year, so we’ll have three jumping castles, a petting zoo, superheroes, and a footy clinic. The council

chip in with a grant to help make this a great day for the whole community.” About 1500 people attended the 2018 event and organisers are hoping to better that mark this year. The day will feature a mix of under-age, open and masters (35+) events, with the showpiece 120-metre open gift final at 8.10pm. The gift prize money is $5500, with $12,000 up for grabs across the whole day. Last year’s gift winner went on to win the Stawell Gift. A 16-year-old boy has been charged after a number of needles were found in a seat of a Watergardens line train last week. Police have been told a man boarded a Melbourne-bound train at West Footscray station just before 8am on January 9, and after sitting in a vacant seat found about 20 needles inserted into it and surrounding seats. The boy was charged with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, assault, assault with a weapon and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail. He is in custody.

Police are appealing for help after a woman was sexually assaulted in Sunshine. A woman boarded a route 903 bus from the Sunshine station just after 6pm on Thursday, December 27. When she disembarked at Munroe Avenue she was sexually assaulted by an unknown man. The man is described as being of Pacific Islander appearance and solid build, aged 20-30 years and 180 centimetres tall with brown eyes, black beard and black hair in a bun. Four-time mayor charged By Tom Cowie/The Age Former Melton councillor and four-time mayor Justin Mammarella allegedly planned a cover-up with three other Labor Party staffers to conceal the use of electorate office resources for a successful pre-selection campaign. Mammarella, the former Labor candidate who quit a month before last November’s state election, his father, Umberto Mammarella, Angela Scarpaci and Jeffrey O’Donnell appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court last Wednesday. They were charged by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption

Commission last year. Mammarella, 42, was preselected by Labor to contest the safe seat of Melton in the state election, but stood aside in October, citing family reasons. Charge sheets show the group allegedly attempted to pervert the course of justice by agreeing to tell IBAC they had not used paid work hours, stationery and office equipment at the Cairnlea electorate office to aid Mammarella’s preselection bid. The four people are also alleged to have given false information that 713 stamped envelopes addressed to members of Labor’s Melton branch seized by investigators were intended

for a mail-out to raise autism awareness for service provider Autism Plus. Magistrate Duncan Reynolds heard that the prosecution would need extra time to compile the brief of evidence in order for material from listening devices to be transcribed. Some members of the group are also alleged to have shared confidential information about their appearance before an IBAC examination and the evidence they intended to give. The charges were handed down in December after an IBAC investigation into the alleged misuse of retired MP Khalil Eideh’s taxpayer-funded printing budget to pay for

Labor Party memberships. Mr Eideh, the former Western Metropolitan MP, retired from politics at the November election after holding a seat for 12 years. In September 2017, Mr Eideh’s office in Cairnlea closed and his staff placed on leave as news broke that IBAC would be asked to investigate the alleged rort. Mr Eideh stood down as deputy president of the upper house not long after the allegations emerged. The matter will return to court for a committal mention on April 3. – with Benjamin Preiss

The Kings Park centre needs volunteer leaders to help run their Women’s Shed program, especially anyone who has some experience with power tools for their woodworking program. The Women’s Shed program brings local women together to learn woodwork skills, and also provides an opportunity for women to get involved in a fun community program. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve encouraged anyone with the right skills to jump in and give the program a go. “We’re looking for women who have leadership qualities and know how to safely use benchtop power tools to volunteer as program leaders – Women’s Shed Champions,” Cr Congreve said.

“No qualifications are needed; however the volunteers need to be able to demonstrate their knowledge and ability to use power tools such as a table saw, router or scroll saw, before becoming Women’s Shed Champions. “The Women’s Shed program wants more volunteer leaders so we can accommodate more participants.” The Women’s Shed sessions are held weekly for two hours in the Westvale Men’s Shed, resuming on Monday, February 11. Network Literacy/Numeracy Teachers Department of Education and Training Job Details An exciting opportunity exists for inspiring classroom teachers to be part of the Department’s Middle Years Literacy and Numeracy Support (MYLNS) initiative. MYLNS is a $183 million, four-year initiative which will provide intensive teaching support to secondary students who are at risk of finishing school without the literacy and numeracy skills they need for future work, further education or training. Position Details You will improve student confidence and learning outcomes by providing direct, targeted support to eligible students in Years 8 to 10 from up to four schools in collaboration with their in-class teachers and wellbeing staff. Off to a flying start With the first round of tertiary education offers to be released this Wednesday, many Brimbank school leavers are enduring a nervous wait. However high-achieving Derrimut student Jamieson Battistella already has her studies planned out. Jamieson achieved an ATAR score of 92.65, enough to guarantee her entry to the University of Melbourne’s bachelor of arts program. Making her score even more remarkable is the fact that Jamieson is a highly ranked athlete. She said studying year 12 subjects before her final year made the world of difference. “That gave me time to juggle my study and athletics and I managed to get scores in the 40s for those two subjects, which set me up for the following year.”

She said her college helped make a stressful year a lot easier. “At Maribyrnong College they really helped me arrange my studies. I had six study periods a week which meant I could go and do some training and then come back.” “Or if I was away at a competition and missed a SAC, they could reschedule it for me and made sure I had enough time to study.” While Jamieson is excited to begin university, she also plans to continue her athletics career. As a heptathlete, Jamieson competes in seven events over two-day competitions. “The dream one day is an Olympics [but] it’s the same as it’s always been, with baby steps.” Tate Papworth

certainly throws challenges at you, but it’s amazing to be a part of it. “Coaching and developing my staff has been very rewarding too, they’ve gone on to do some great things. And getting this new facility here in Sunshine, that took 15 years to get, so that’s probably my legacy I suppose.” Ms Hall, who’s husband is also an ambulance

officer, said there was any number of highlights from her long career, but one stands out. “My husband and I delivered a baby together down in Braybrook,” she said. “He’d delivered a few, but that was my first one so it was pretty special.” Ms Hall said she plans to travel in retirement before jumping into some volunteer work.

Keilor Downs plans progress Brimbank council’s grand plans to develop a better connected Keilor Downs activity hub are starting to take shape. At its December meeting, the council adopted the Keilor Downs urban design framework, which establishes design principles to guide future development of the centre. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said upgrades would provide the area with better connections. “This framework will help to ensure that future development enhances connections in this centre – particularly for people who choose to walk or cycle,” Cr Congreve said “Council’s vision is to improve connections within the Keilor Downs activity centre and create a popular and inviting neighbourhood … with vibrant streets and public spaces.” The framework calls for high-quality cycling and walking connections that will tie into the future Health and Wellbeing Hub on the St Albans Leisure Centre site. But at the council’s December meeting, it was noted that no traffic studies had been done on the framework after Cr Bruce Lancashire raised concerns that the proposed north-south access road could be used as a shortcut. More than 30 years after she helped blaze a path for female paramedics in Victoria, Georgie Hall has called it a day. Ms Hall was one of the first women in Victoria to be admitted to the paramedic training program, which was only open to men up until 1988. The Sunshine senior team manager retired last week after a long and distinguished career with Ambulance Victoria, but she reflected that it very nearly never happened. “They had to pass a law to allow women to apply, something about lifting, so when that happened I was the third in Victoria to be accepted,” Ms Hall said. “I was already doing nursing, and someone who I knew through squash and the husband of someone I used to work with nagged me to apply. “You won’t believe this, but I had no idea what paramedics did. I didn’t realise until I started just what was involved, but since then I’ve absolutely loved it.” While she may have entered the role with little expectation of what was involved, she said the job soon captivated her. “I really liked the idea that it was two of you making the decision for a patient,” she said. “You’re always learning, and the training that you get always kept things interesting. It’s a rewarding job as well, the main thing is that you are helping people, which is what it’s all about.” After a few years jumping between various branches, Ms Hall settled at Sunshine in 1991, before becoming a team manager in 1995. “It’s been fantastic and the community have been great to me,” she said. “It’s a multicultural area, it’s diverse, it

Police keen to cut down stats Brimbank police will focus on public education in a bid to reduce the number of robberies in the area. Crime statistics released for the year ending September 2018 show crimes against the person rose to 2981 offences, a jump from 2737 at the same time in 2017. Brimbank local area commander Terry West said the rise was due to a spike in robberies. “Generally a lot of these crimes are street robberies so we’ll focus on educating the public,” he said. “They typically occur around transport hubs etc, so it’ll be mostly about making sure people are cautious, rather than concerned.” Assault and related offences rose by 68 in the past year. Dangerous and negligent acts endangering people, which fall into the crimes against the person category, rose by 52 offences. There was also a spike in thefts, which jumped to 6385 offences from 5789. Stalking and harassment offences also rose dramatically, up to 470 from 333, however Inspector West said there was a good reason for the spike. “We’ve got a dedicated family violence team in Caroline Springs targeting recidivist offenders,” he said. “We’ve seen a spike in reported offences from their efforts, so there’s a jump, but there’s a good reason for it – I liken it to good cholesterol. “Once these people have undergone education, we’re hopeful those figures will start to drop.”

Drug offences also rose, largely due to a jump in use and possession offences, however drug dealing and trafficking fell to its lowest number since 2011. Offences relating to cultivating or manufacturing drugs were at a 10-year low. Inspector West said the key drops in those offences was the result of continued targeted policing. “Drugs are still a major target for our CIU team, who have been working with the local council,” he said.

There were 355 sexual offences within the municipality last year, down from 367 the year before, however the number was still the second highest recorded since 2009. There was also a significant drop in weapons and explosives offences with 663 offences, the lowest recorded since 2014. While police were pleased with a number of key improvements, overall crime rose with 6900 offences recorded, up from 6379 in 2017.

MY BRIMBANK Francesca De Maria moved to Australia as a refugee in 1985 and rebuilt her life. Her first solo exhibition opened last week at the Sunshine Art Spaces Gallery. She chats with Tate Papworth about art, migration and Brimbank. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I came to Australia in 1985. My family was allowed to come here as refugees because in 1980 there was a major earthquake in the South of Italy that destroyed buildings, flattened entire villages and killed thousands of people. I’ve moved around Victoria a bit and have been in Deer Park for the past six years. Moving as a refugee must have been a challenge. I didn’t know any English when I came here and I was terrible at singing songs, but I did anyway. It was a slow process, but it’s been great. What do you like best about Brimbank?

Like St Kilda was turned around, this area, too, is up and coming. I can see new infrastructure coming up. I think public art also plays a major part in communities. I think the public art and cafe culture in this area is really making great strides. What do you think could be done better? I think there’s an inferiority complex out here. For too many years there’s been an inferiority complex that this is an area with high unemployment and undesirable. This area is flourishing and I’d like to see people start to believe in themselves. Tell us about your exhibition.

This is my first solo exhibition. All the pieces are done on recycled material because I like to be inspired by different shapes. Painting is my passion. I’ve done it on and off since I was a child.

Recycled material is a unique way to create art. All of us humans come in all sorts of different shapes and forms. Some of us have scars and ugliness underneath. I recycle pieces and try to

apply colour and apply life, which is in a way what we do with ourselves also. I found some of these in the rubbish, others have holes in them. There’s no theme or style – it’s the surface that inspires me.

A meeting between government officials and representative of the people of Sunshine on December 20 was the most constructive ever held, according to local MP, Mr Bill Fogarty. Mr Fogarty led a deputation of VicRail tenants who met in Sunshine with the Minister for Transport, Mr R. McLellan and officials of VicRail, the Housing Commission and Sunshine Council and discussions were far reaching and most encouraging.

Another leak from an acid plant at ICI’s Deer Park chemical complex has sparked new fears among Sunshine residents that the state’s emergency services would be incapable of helping them in the face of an all-out disaster at the complex. Residents have especially questioned the fire department’s ability to handle a chemical disaster after last week’s nitrating acid leak at the plant.

An application for a liquor licence by Free Serbian Orthodox Church of St George in St Albans, could be thwarted if the Liquor Licensing Commission accepts that a planning permit for the church’s hall issued in 1966 has lapsed. Under the Liquor Control Act, an application for a liquor licence must be accompanied by a copy of a planning permit to use a building as licensed premises.

Indian men living in Sunshine are still waiting for better security a month after a shopper suffered serious head injuries in a supermarket bashing. About 6.40pm on December 1, a group of young men armed with metal poles and sticks stormed the Indian Impex grocery and convenience store in City Place.

SPORT Saints march on to another victory St Albans has leapt up off the canvas with a memorable 63-run win over defending champions Yarraville Club in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division at Hansen Reserve on Saturday. The previously bottom Saints moved up to fifth on the ladder, just one spot outside the top four, while sending the Clubbers down to the bottom of the ladder. St Albans set up its victory with a powerful batting performance, making 6-215 off the maximum 40 overs. A 126-run opening stand between Brenton Cook (53) and Simon Lambert (69) put the Saints in front early. Handy contributions from Buddika Hasaranga (25), Shanaka Silva (26 not out) and Billy Whitford (23) ensured the Saints would move beyond 200. Yarraville Club has been the most powerful batting unit in the competition for a long time but they were never allowed to get going as they slumped to 6-33 on the back of some

stellar bowling from St Albans’ new ball user Whitford, who took 4-42 off eight overs. Silva, Lambert, Geeth Alwis and captain Rob Nikolic all chimed in with a wicket as the Clubbers were restricted to 8-152. Lambert capped a man of the match performance with two catches and an economical 1-17 off eight. Meanwhile, Sunshine United is entrenched in the top four after a six-wicket victory over Strathmore at the Syd McGain Oval. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Happy New Year, I hope it is a good one for all of us. I want to start the year on a very positive note and say well done to the Hobsons Bay council, which came to the rescue of the National Jockey Trust charity cricket day and offered Williamstown Oval at a very modest rental charge. The charity T20 game is in its seventh year and has always been held in Caulfield at the local cricket ground. This year though, the council decided to jack the hire fee up to nearly $10,000. Yes, you read correctly. When the event started seven years ago $500 was considered enough, but it has been going up ever since. The jump this year was almost the death knell of the event. Luckily Hobsons Bay came to the rescue. Is there a more picturesque oval in Melbourne? It is a fun day but one with a serious mission, to raise funds to help out families of jockeys who could have their life and their livelihood taken away in a split second. As race caller Bryan Martin used to say, it is the only occupation where the ambulance follows you around while you do your work. ■ The event is Monday, January 21, from noon with a 1pm start for the T20 game. The jockeys’ team includes skipper Damien Oliver, Michelle Payne, Brett Prebble, Jamie Kah and Mark Zahra, while the All Stars boast Archie Thompson, Brendan Fevola, Matt Curmani, Stevie Payne and Gill McLachlan. There will be plenty of food and refreshments available, plus lots of other entertaining activities during the afternoon.

Poor shots prove costly By Lance Jenkinson Keilor was left deflated after letting slip a chance against top two side Doutta Stars in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The Blues appeared to be on track for victory, but suffered a dramatic batting collapse to finish 16 runs short of the 151 target in a see-sawing one-day game at the Joe Brown Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Blues captain Daniel Stavris was devastated after the loss and put the blame squarely at the feet of the batsmen. “We were 0-60 and then all out for 135,” he said. “There were some poor shots and bad decision making. “No one took it upon themselves to get the job done.” In what is shaping as a tight season with all teams top to bottom still in the running to play finals, this is one loss that could come back to 38 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 15, 2019

It will be very interesting to see if this powerhouse can resurrect its season. In the local derby, Spotswood lost to Seddon and Sunshine United had a good win. In the subbies, Matt Dean has the hottest bat in the west, posting his second century of the season in Werribee’s win over Brighton. Adam Alifraco produced a terrific all round performance, scoring 58 and taking 2/13. Hoppers defeated Malvern and Williamstown took care of Taylors Lakes but Altona and Yarraville suffered losses. Special mention to Rhys Dodemaide who achieved a double hat-trick (all bowled) in Werribee’s 2nd XI game against Williamstown, finishing with figures of 5/22. Impressive.

Albion Rovers turn back time By Lance Jenkinson When Albion Rovers relocated to a new soccer facility at Cairnlea in 2007, the club’s officials opted to change the club’s name to Cairnlea FC to better reflect the suburb it was playing in. But even after more than a decade with the new name, in the hearts of most of the club’s players and supporters, it was still the Albion Rovers. The players would sing the theme song with Albion Rovers in the words after wins and some supporters on social media still referred to the club as Albion. So it was decided by the club late last year that it would revert back to the popular name Albion Rovers in 2019 – the year in which the club will celebrate its 50th anniversary. “It sort of goes back to the history of the club,” Rovers’ coach Kevin Theuma said. “It’s a name that everyone remembers the club by, especially in its glory days of the 1980s and 1990s when we had 1000s of people watching the games in the Premier League and some massive names came through the club.

“It’s about getting in touch with our history again.” Theuma is hoping the name change will allow the club to re-connect with some past players and supporters. He is adamant there are plenty of old Rovers

fans who would still feel a connection to the club through the name. “I think we always were Albion,” he said. “Even our theme song is still Albion – always has and always will be. “This will bring a bit of symmetry around who we actually are … hopefully we can push the club back to the glory days, which is what we’re all looking for.” Theuma is back on board for a third season in charge. It is an important season for Theuma as it will give him a chance to see if he can achieve the three-year goal he set out at the start of his tenure. “I took over in 2017 and it was always a three year plan in terms of promotion,” he said. “We’ve rebuilt a whole new squad from scratch, so that was never going to be easy, and 2019 was always going to be the year we really wanted to get promoted. “There was a bit of disappointment last year in not achieving it when we were so close, but we’ve retained a lot of our squad from last year and a few additions, which we’ll announce in

the coming weeks, so there’s definitely some excitement around the club.” Theuma’s anticipation is not confined to what he thinks the seniors and reserves teams can achieve this season. With a new board recently installed, there has been a focus on lifting the professionalism of the club from top to bottom. A key driver of that will be Mustafa Mustafa, who has taken over as the new director of football. “There’s a few changes through our juniors with a focus on improving the level of coaching and level of professionalism that we offer our kids,” Theuma said. “Our new director of football is involved with that and will be leading the football department, rather than just a committee member trying to do bits and pieces. “It will be really good for the kids and you’ll see an improvement in the quality of coaching. “We’ve got some massive clubs in our area in terms of National Premier League and some good junior clubs as well, so we want to be part of that and we want to be better than them.”

Lions pay for late innings collapse Taylors Lakes captain Jarrod Wakeling has labelled the batting collapse that led to his side’s seven-wicket loss to reigning premiers Williamstown in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group at Lionheart Reserve on Saturday as “embarrassing”. The Lions were all out for a disappointing 122 after winning the toss and electing to bat in the one-day game. It was the late innings collapse, the Lions losing their last six partnerships for just five runs, that left Wakeling fuming. “We were 4-117 and looking at posting a score around the 150 or 170 mark,” Wakeling said. “After that, our batting was just terrible. “There was 25 minutes of the game where we lost 6-5 and that essentially ended any chance of us being competitive. “It was disgusting, it was embarrassing.” Taylors Lakes’ top order negotiated the new

ball well. Michael Brne was looking in fine form on his way to 30 before he was run out. Nipun Sumanasinghe kept up his consistent form with 44, while Dilshan Kanchana added 25 in the middle order. “We had a few good partnerships at the start,” Wakeling said. “Our opener Mick Brne batted well, he played some nice strokes. “Then the two imports, Nipun and Dilshan, both batted really well. They went out close together and once the domino started, it just continued unfortunately.” It was the middle to lower order batsmen who drew the ire for Taylors Lakes. It took just 25 minutes of fury from the Williamstown bowlers to all but take the game away from the Lions. While the bowling was good, Wakeling felt that too many of his batsmen gave up their wickets too cheaply.

“To Williamstown’s credit, they bowled in the right areas and did the right things, but the wickets that they got in the 6-5 certainly weren’t balls that turned three metres or because a tearaway quick was too quick, it was just guys that didn’t apply themselves and missed a couple of straight ones,” he said. Despite the low score to defend, Taylors Lakes fought the game out as best it could in the field before its inevitable defeat. It took Williamstown 34.5 overs to chase down the small total. “Our bowling and fielding energy was really good,” Wakeling said. “We had them 3-70-odd and felt we were in the game, but when push came to shove, 122 just wasn’t enough.” Second last on the table, Taylors Lakes is a massive 15 points outside the top six. Now, the importer has just landed a super-luxury version of the CX-9, the Azami LE, Down Under. What’s more, the new seven-seat ‘palace’ on wheels will set back its buyer a mere $1500 – petty cash – over the existing Azami range-topper. Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi said the new Mazda CX-9 defined a new meaning for affordable luxury. “Since its 2016 launch, Mazda CX-9 sales have always skewed to high-grade all-wheel drive variants, so we added Azami LE to give those looking for luxury even greater choice in the range.” Azami LE introduces a new and luxurious interior trim, featuring wood highlights, while Azami and Azami LE grades add the 360-degree view monitor, heated steering wheel and front seat ventilation. While on the job, Mazda also took the opportunity to make improvements across the CX-9 range with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity for all grades, ActivSense safety technologies now standard across all models.
