A-League heads to the west The west will be home to a new A-League soccer team after scoring one of two new Football Federation Australia expansion licences. The Western Melbourne Group and Macarthur-South West Sydney clubs were given the green light following an FFA board meeting on Wednesday, December 12. The Western Melbourne Group is expected to make its debut in the 2019-20 A-League season and will train and compete at Geelong’s Kardinia Park while its home ground, the multimillion-dollar Wyndham Stadium, is under construction in Tarneit. The 15,000-seat stadium – which has been fully funded – will be built on Wyndham council-owned land at 1160 Sayers Road, Tarneit, and is expected to be ready for the opening round of the 2021-22 A-League season. It will include elite training pitches, sports medicine facilities and a gym. Residential and commercial development is planned for the surrounding area. FFA chief executive David Gallop said one of the key strengths of the Western Melbourne Group bid was its proposal to build Australia’s first soccer-owned and soccer-specific stadium. “The prospect of a facility owned by football for football will be a significant new milestone for the game in Australia,” Mr Gallop said. “Football-specific stadia have been extremely successful in league expansion in other parts of the world and we are excited by the prospect of such a facility in Melbourne.” FFA chairman Chris Nikou said the two bids chosen were located in

some of the biggest growth corridors in Australia and presented long-term growth opportunities. Mr Nikou stressed the decision was “not a full stop for the expansion process”, with the FFA keen to eventually expand to 14 teams. Western Melbourne director of football Steve Horvat thanked the group’s partner, Wyndham council, for its hard work and commitment to the bid. The bid also had the support of Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Melton councils.

“[The council’s] vision from day one in identifying our future home has been a cornerstone of our bid,” Mr Horvat said. “Most of all, we thank the people of western Melbourne for daring to dream and giving the bid team the energy and drive to make this happen. “Football is all about the fans and Western Melbourne will be fan-centric in everything we do.” As previously reported by Star Weekly, the Western Melbourne Group Weekly has already been chatting to possible marquee player recruits to ensure the new club has a strong player base. Mr Horvat said the Western Melbourne Group had started preliminary planning for building Wyndham Stadium and expected to turn soil on the project within 12 months.

City takes new approach on youth unemployment Brimbank council wants help to deal with youth unemployment. The council will request a meeting with the Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade Martin Pakula, and the Minister for Training and Skills and Minister for Higher Education Gayle Tierney, to look at ways to get information about jobs and training opportunities in Brimbank to students. Cr Virginia Tachos, who moved a motion requesting the meetings, said despite Brimbank’s strong economy, youth unemployment is much higher than the greater

Melbourne average. “In hotspots like Albion, Albanvale Derrimut, Kings Park, Deer Park and St Albans East youth unemployment and disengagement is even higher,” she said. “Unemployed young people in Brimbank often face the barrier of relatively poor infrastructure which affects their proximity and access to jobs.” Cr Tachos said much is being done to promote employment, but more help is needed. “Council is currently advocating that the airport rail link with a stop in Sunshine

will deliver significant economic benefits to Brimbank and generate employment opportunities during the construction phase,” she said. “Brimbank learning futures, which is due

Brimbank goes public with new art policy

Beefcake’s taste for toys By Tate Papworth Beefcake the French bulldog isn’t a fussy eater. The four-year old dog from Keilor Downs underwent emergency life-saving surgery at Lort Smith Animal Hospital last week where vets removed four rubber ducks from his stomach and intestine. Beefcake’s owner, Tabatha took him to the hospital after he had been vomiting and refusing to eat for two days. Vets took X-ray images which revealed three rubber ducks in his stomach and one in his intestine.

It’s unclear when Beefcake ingested the ducks. “The rubber ducks that Beefcake ate were severely discoloured and are smaller than unconsumed rubber ducks, suggesting they had been consumed some time ago,” said Lort Smith vet Dr Paula. “Beefcake is lucky he came to us in time. If he had been left in this state much longer the damage could have been more severe.” Tabatha said Beefcake has an acquired taste for the ducks. “Beefcake loves the squeaking sound of the rubber ducks,” Tabatha said.

“When we first moved into our house a friend hid hundreds around the house as a surprise.” Beefcake spent two days recovering at the hospital and is now back at home with his friend Pepper the black pug. Dr Paula said Beefcake’s story was a timely reminder heading into Christmas. “Dogs love chew toys. It is important to ensure your dog has access to toys that are big enough not to swallow, made of safe material, are durable, and have no small parts.” Tabatha has since removed every duck from her home, just in case Beefcake gets hungry again.

Public art will play a big role in shaping Brimbank over the next five years. The council adopted a new public art policy and plan at its December meeting following community consultation and workshops with residents and artists. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said public art played a vital role in connecting the community. “Council plays an important role in making public art a significant part of Brimbank’s urban and cultural landscape, and we’re very fortunate to already have some wonderful installations that aptly reflect our heritage and our culturally diverse community,” she said. “These include the public art exhibited at Sunshine train station; Eagle at the Federation Trail in Brooklyn; the Seeds of Hopes and Dreams installations in St Albans and the mural at Keilor library. “What I love about public art is that it helps us all to connect to the community that we live, work and play in – and it’s inspirational as well as aspirational.” Cr Bruce Lancashire said: “Public art really is an important part in the development of a community’s profile and image”. “Public art is something that certainly adds to our culture significantly. There can be pieces that are talking points and pieces that one loves to look at.” The new policy places emphasis on funding public art, supporting artists, community engagement, maintaining and promoting public art and public art commissions. Jail time for armed robber

By Benjamin Millar Assistant Commissioner Debra Abbott knows she has a big job ahead of her – but she is relishing the challenge. As Victoria Police’s new commander in the North West Metro Region, Assistant Commissioner Abbott is in charge of all policing from the CBD out to the city’s northern and western fringes – one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. A 30-year veteran of Victoria Police, she most recently served as the head of state emergencies. “I’m actually very fortunate that my career has been really diverse,” she said. “I have led a large number of programs and projects, including the roll-out of new police uniforms.” Assistant Commissioner Abbott is keen to bring her experience into one of Melbourne’s most complex policing regions. “The good thing about working in the region of the north-west is that it is such a diverse area,” she said. “Every single day is different. “It’s enormously fulfilling – every day I pinch myself I’m so lucky.” The rapid change of pace in both the CBD and growth corridors in the city’s north and west means police must constantly adapt. Assistant Commissioner Abbott said that when she first worked in the region, very few people were living in high-rise apartments. “Now it’s growing, and growing so fast, which means we do have to police differently and respond to different challenges,” she said. Assistant Commissioner Abbott said that despite the constant change, basic principles had remained constant in her three decades in Victoria Police. “We’re there to do our utmost, that doesn’t change,” she said. “The things that haven’t

really changed are dealing with greed and rage and jealousy and power. What does change is the environment in which we operate. We have a growing community, we have a growing population, our roads are carrying more cars, more pedestrians and more cyclists.” Assistant Commissioner Abbott takes seriously her role to protect the community, but also knows their sense of safety is also important. “The perceptions of safety are as important

as safety itself,” she said. “Some parts of the community are in pain or struggling. My thought is the police are the community and the community are the police – there are parts of policing that we can’t do alone.” Keeping up with crime trends and new forms of policing is one thing, getting ahead of them is another challenge altogether, she explains. “It’s also really important to keep a really open mind on the things ahead on the horizon,” she said.

A Keilor man has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison over an armed robbery spree earlier this year. The County Court last month heard that Khoree Brooks robbed stores in West Footscray, Braybrook, St Albans and Essendon on May 15 and 16, hiding his face with a ski mask and pulling a large knife on staff each time. Brooks, 29, entered a guilty plea on three charges of armed robbery and one charge of attempted armed robbery. In the first incident he pulled a long knife on a staff member at a Subway store on Mount Alexander Road in Essendon, about 9.15am on May 15. Forty minutes later, he robbed Le’s Furlong Pharmacy in St Albans, again producing a knife and demanding cash. About 3pm the next day, Brooks attempted to rob the Foodworks supermarket in Braybrook, pulling out a large carving knife and demanding money from the operator. Brooks fled after the woman started yelling out for her husband and son. About 30 minutes later he entered the Australia Post shop in Barkly Street, West Footscray. He pulled out a large knife and placed a bag on the counter, again demanding money. Brooks fled the store with more than $1000 in cash. Police arrested Brooks about 6.40pm that evening, finding more than $1000 in his bag. Benjamin Millar

Indigenous plan for Horseshoe Bend By Tate Papworth The reinvention of Horseshoe Bend Farm is one idea being put forward as part of a plan to establish an Aboriginal hub in Brimbank. Cr Virginia Tachos tabled a motion on behalf of Cr Victoria Borg at last month’s council meeting, calling on the council to support the efforts of the indigenous community to establish a hub at Horseshoe Bend. She said the motion was the result of a meeting of the Brimbank Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee

during which it expressed support for the establishment of an Aboriginal hub at Horseshoe Bend. “Unlike many other municipalities, there is no dedicated meeting place or exclusive community asset in Brimbank for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to meet, yarn, learn and develop,” Cr Tachos said One option would be to return the farm to its former use. It could also include a social enterprise where visitors can learn about indigenous culture.

Cr John Hedditch said Horseshoe Bend was the ideal spot. “The importance of access to country through an area like Horseshoe Bend with its connection to the Maribyrnong River and the capacity for the community to walk along that river … is significant,” Cr Hedditch said.

“I reflect on previous roles as a public health manager in the Gunditjmara area of Warrnambool where Aboriginal men with alcohol and drug problems were given access to country and the ability to walk through farming land. “Nearly all of those men, once they had access to country, were able to turn their lives around. “A place to provide access to country in Brimbank is so important and I look forward to making it a reality after talking with Parks Victoria and various others.”

Lumbar backs up park The park has been without a cafe for a little more than a year and Mr Clark said his main goal was to get people to return. “We want people interacting around the park,” he said. “We definitely want to do things like farmers’ markets and we’d love to do car and motorbike shows on the grounds behind the cafe. “The cafe will provide a great clubhouse atmosphere, and will welcome all to truly celebrate the natural environment, and promote active enjoyment of what is one of Melbourne’s great metropolitan parks. “It’s about bringing the community together.” Tate Papworth Lumbar and Co Coffee co-owner Fraser Clark says they have big plans. Brimbank Park finally has a cafe. Lumbar and Co Coffee has taken out a 10-year lease of the site and co-owner Fraser Clark has big plans. “We’re going to be fully licensed and open seven days a week,” he said. “Sunday afternoons we’ll get a bit of music and might even put a spit on the barbecue. “There’ll be white wine, jazz music – it’ll be a place to relax.” The bar and dining area will be renovated and is expected to be open for business in early 2019. In the meantime a pop-up cafe is open at the shop front. Mr Clark said he was enjoying getting to know the area and people. “We’ll be here over summer, including Christmas Day and Boxing Day,” he said. “We’ll be serving light snacks and we’ll even have a menu for dogs.”

By Ewen McRae A Delahey man who shot a home invader in the back with a shotgun has had his prison sentence extended on appeal in the Supreme Court. Oliver Graoroski was sentenced in the County Court on October 11 for one charge of reckless conduct endangering life and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm following an incident on October 18, 2017. He was sentenced to seven months jail and a two-year community corrections order, however the Director of Public Prosecutions appealed the length of the sentence, saying it was manifestly inadequate. The court heard that Graoroski was living at his parents Delahey home at the time of the incident, and was involved in a relationship with Rachel Sacco. Both Ms Sacco and Graoroski were using drugs at the time. Ms Sacco had arranged for a former partner, Jose Vargas, and his friends to break into Graoroski’s bedroom to steal money and drugs. Ms Sacco sent text messages to Mr Vargas on the night of the incident, advising where the money and drugs was hidden, and also arranging to leave the front door unlocked. Mr Vargas and two friends entered the house about 3.30am, and armed with a baseball bat and a machete they threatened Graoroski as they tried to bind his hands with cable ties. Graoroski’s father then entered the room and was able to wrestle the baseball bat out of the intruder’s arms.

On October 30, 2018 a charge and warrant to arrest was issued for Brett CHALMERS at the Sunshine Magistrates Court. The relevant charge is criminal damage by fire. Police are seeking information as to CHALMERS’ current whereabouts.

There are currently four warrants of arrest for Kurt SMART. On January 30, 2018 SMART failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court to answer charges including recklessly causing injury and possessing a controlled weapon without excuse. Police are seeking information as to SMART’s current whereabouts.

Graoroski then took a shotgun from behind the door, and after a brief struggle the three intruders fled the house. Graoroski chased the men from the house, and shot one of them in the upper back. The shot intruder fell to the ground but got up and drove away with the other two. The shooting victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. All three intruders were arrested soon after. They have all been sentenced to more than five years in prison. The court heard the injured intruder had two shattered ribs, perforations to his stomach and bowel, and a pulmonary haemorrhage. He was briefly placed on life support and spent six weeks in hospital. The DPP argued the original sentence placed too much weight on the Graoroski’s motive or explanation for offending and not enough on his possession of a shotgun, or the seriousness of the offences. They also said by the time Graoroski discharged his shotgun, the threat presented by the home invaders had dissipated. Justices Chris Maxwell, Terence Forrest and Mark Weinberg agreed with the DPP that the sentence was too lenient. “It is unarguable that the respondent [Graoroski] was confronted with an extremely difficult set of circumstances,” they said. “While they do operate powerfully to ameliorate it, they do not extinguish it. By the time the respondent chased [Nick] Anagnostou from his house, the danger had passed.” Graoroski was resentenced to two years jail.

City explores disability hub

By Tate Papworth A Keilor Downs fashion designer lived out a dream last month. Salih Nesim received a last-minute call-up to take part in the prestigious Fashion Aid event. Mr Nesim said it was a whirlwind chain of events. “Fashion Aid has always been an event that I’ve looked at and thought I’d love to be a part of,” Mr Nesim said. “This opportunity was very last minute. I only got notified about three months ago.

“In that time I had to organise the collection, which was about seven pieces and then put it together.” Mr Nesim said the opportunity came up in an unusual way. “My mum works for a lady who introduced me to one of the organisers who made space for me,” he said. “I’m so glad I took the opportunity and went for it.” He said an overseas trip was the source of inspiration for the show. “This whole collection was based off royalty,” he said. “I went overseas to Vienna last year and it really inspired the whole collection. “It was surreal to see it all come together.” With one major goal ticked off, Mr Nesim has a clear vision for the future. “I’d love to be doing some red carpet work next year – things like the Logies and Brownlow,” he said.

A disability hub for Brimbank is a step closer. The council has undertaken a feasibility study into creating a hub in conjunction with the Brimbank Disability Advisory Committee, the Brimbank Disability Network and the Project Reference Group. Cr Virginia Tachos said establishing a hub was vital both for people with a disability and carers. “There is a real need expressed by Brimbank residents and carers experiencing barriers,” she said. “They need a dedicated and flexible space where they can receive face-to-face support. “Not all residents in Brimbank will be eligible for NDIS and we have seen in the delay with the rollout of a local area co-ordinator, that families are confused about how and why they may be impacted.” One of the key recommendations from the study was to facilitate partnerships between the local area co-ordinator, National Disability Insurance Australia and other western region councils to develop a database and on-line information portal to support informed decision-making for people with disabilities, their families and carers. “There should be a place where Brimbank carers and people with a disability can attend and find out where they can get assistance,” Cr Tachos said. Last Friday, it was my great pleasure to attend the long awaited opening of Westwood Drive road and bridge in Burnside Heights. The $8.7 million project will redirect around 10,000 vehicles per day away from Caroline Springs Boulevard and Gourlay Road, and cut up to 10 minutes travel time; while a three meter-wide shared path will create a safe place for walkers, runners and cyclists to be active and stay healthy.

Council is very pleased to have delivered this much-needed project that not only adds to the liveability of our City, but further confirms our commitment to enriching our communities through access to infrastructure and facilities. Recently I became aware of safety concerns surrounding the intersection of Caroline Springs Boulevard and Commercial Road where drivers have been misjudging gaps in traffic when

entering the intersection, resulting in several vehicle collisions and nearmisses. Council Traffic Engineers worked with VicRoads to develop options to improve the safety of the intersection, and recommended a remodelled signal plan to restrict drivers turning right from Caroline Springs Boulevard on a green arrow only. The plan was approved by VicRoads, and will be implemented in coming weeks. Another great outcome for our community. Council dives into pool planning By Ewen McRae Brimbank council has appointed architects to design the new-look St Albans Leisure Centre, despite no funding commitment from state or federal governments. While the council continues to advocate for up to $25 million in investment from governments, it has appointed Williams Ross Architects to design the upgraded facility, which is now expected to cost more than $58 million. The architects have previously worked on

similar upgrades at Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre, Princes Park and North Melbourne Recreation Reserve. The council will also offer Good Shepherd Australia New Zealand and CommUnity Plus Services Ltd, tenancy agreements to co-locate at the hub. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was an exciting stage for the centre. “We know the community has been watching the progress of this project very closely,” Cr Congreve said. “What we’re going to build goes way beyond a new leisure and aquatic centre, in fact this will be an Australian first.

“We’re going to replace the leisure centre with a vibrant, welcoming and innovative multi-generational health and wellbeing hub – the centrepiece of which will be a state-of-the-art aquatic and leisure centre. “The design consultants will now take our vision and create a design that will incorporate all of the aquatic and leisure features we have agreed to include, as well as spaces to accommodate the needs of our tenant partners. “We look forward to being able to show the community what the hub will look like once the plans are drawn up.”

The council has allocated $1.8 million in its 2018-19 budget to design the project, but has yet to receive a formal funding commitment. The council had its application for a $3 million Better Pools Grant knocked back by the state government prior to the election. Leaked documents said the proposal fell short in a range of key areas, including gender equality and environmental sustainability. It also stated the costings did not allow for cost escalation and the need for a redeveloped leisure centre was not strongly communicated in the application.

Boost for bully activist Monique Mastrobattista has had a busy year – and 2019 is shaping up to be another big one as she prepares to launch her second book. The Caroline Springs anti-bullying campaigner, 15, has visited schools and built a strong social media following as she spreads her message, one inspired by her own experience of bullying. Ms Mastrobattista has received a $10,000 grant from the AMP Foundation’s Tomorrow Fund, which supports talented people who are working hard for community benefit but need help to go to the next level. She said the grant would be a big help in spreading her message. “It’s going to make a huge difference,” she said. “I can use that to make more video productions to show into more schools and also help with the new book, which is really exciting.

“I’ve had great feedback on the school visits, like messages from parents or kids saying how it made a difference. “I think having a young person standing up and talking at the schools has been a big part of that – a lot of kids find it hard to relate when it’s an older person standing up and talking about this stuff.” While her first book, My Discreet Bully Bully, focused on her experiences with bullying, the new book will focus more on body positivity. “There’s more in there on self love, but still about bullying, just based on a different message,” she said. “I’m hoping it will be out in February.” Ewen McRae Monique Mastrobattista is preparing to launch her second book. Mortar used by Jennings Industries on a Sunshine Housing Commission home is totally sub-standard, according to local MP, Mr Bill Fogarty. Mr Fogarty claimed in Parliament last week that private analysis of Mortar taken from a home in Warmington Rd., Sunshine West, showed it does not meet the required standard “by a long way.”

MY BRIMBANK Kim Morgan helped set up woodworking classes at the Westvale Men’s Shed and has been an avid volunteer there. He spoke to Ewen McRae. What is your connection to Brimbank?

What could make the area better?

We have started woodworking for women with shed champions Steve, Anthony and myself, which has seen the ladies doing things with timber that they have never done before; making planter boxes, bee hotels and various repair works. We also now have two female champions. They meet on Mondays 1-3pm. The most rewarding thing about being a part of the men’s shed is the comradeship between all of the people who attend and the willingness for skills and ideas to be shared. If someone is missing for more than one day questions are asked – are they OK? The men’s shed has provided a vehicle to deliver discussion/info sessions on men’s heath and other community issues which we would probably not have paid much attention to.

I became involved in the Men’s Shed at the Westvale Community Centre about two years ago when I retired from full-time employment after 47 years in the ship building industry. I attended an open day at the centre and decided

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir takes up residence at Dumpling House Tina’s Dumpling House is a major arrival in Altona. The food at Tina’s is good and the prices and service righteous – so much so that Altona locals will surely ensure its success and residents of the wider west are advised to consider it a destination. Indeed, in terms of quality for this kind of food, the prices are bang on par with what’s available elsewhere. As well, most dumplings can be had in variable serving sizes of six or 12 pieces. Of course, Tina’s is not just about dumplings – there’s a range of main courses, rice dishes and noodles available. And, yes, you can get here lemon chicken or sweet-and-sour pork if that is your bent. Tina’s has taken over a Pier Street premises long home to a previous Chinese restaurant. It’s a lovely room in which to sup. The wait time of 15 to 20 minutes for dumplings is re-assuring in terms of knowing a house-made philosophy is in play. Pan-fried pork-and-cabbage dumplings ($7.80 for six, $11.80 for 12) are terrific. All too often, we find the meaty centres of such dumplings have a turd-like toughness – even good ones! At Tina’s, the fillings are luscious and tender. Steamed prawn dumplings ($7.80 for four) are just as good, with a full quotient of that essential bursty prawn effect going on. Steamed barbecue pork buns ($6.80 for two) are, for me, a revelation.

TINA’S DUMPLING HOUSE Address: 54 Pier Street, Altona Phone: 9398 8851 We usually order these for bun fan boy Bennie, while I remain bemused and/or unimpressed. This plump pair are superb and make a fan boy out of me – like son, like father. The fluffy/moist buns are stuffed with a more generous than usual mix of hot, sticky chopped pork heavily perfumed with rice wine. Beef brisket soup noodle is one of our regular choices, but always with egg noodles. At Tina’s, we stumble into a rendition made with rice noodles, their whiteness imbuing the bowl with a pallidness that suggests bland. But there’s no doubting the robustness of the broth or the pleasure to be had from the excellent, tender chunks of beef ($11.80). Food lore tells us that there’s nothing Singaporean about Singapore fried noodles – just as there is nothing Chinese about egg foo young. But that doesn’t mean a dish of “Singapore” fried noodles, often less oily than other Chinese wok-fried noodle dishes and with a fetching grittiness delivered by curry powder, cannot be immensely enjoyable and satisfying. As well as the radio, I have family photos, phone charger and a book about money matters on my bedside table right now. Where will you spend Christmas Day this year? We will be with my wife’s extended family at the house of my brother-in-law. We do KK and there are lots of kids – about 12, including my four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. SPORT St Albans mixes it up By Lance Jenkinson Variety is the spice of life at St Albans Football Club under new coach Perry Meka. Meka has been in charge of the Saints for just over a month and no two days have been the same. The pre-Christmas training program has been shaken up, with beach visits, boxing sessions and ball work to go with new layers to the game-plan Meka wants players to have memorised by round one. There have been a number of early Christmas presents for supporters. Adem Yze, a current senior assistant coach at Hawthorn, will be a playing assistant at St Albans when there is no conflict with the AFL club’s schedule. As well, St Albans has signed a number of Northern Blues players, including former AFL player Josh Hill. With a large turnover of players, Meka was not keen on running his new team into the ground before the new year. “We’ve gone from beach to ball work to boxing and it’s been fantastic,” Meka said. “It’s more about the boys getting to know each other, getting to know the game plans and

getting to know me and the rest of the coaches. We’ll ramp it up in January and February and go from there.” Meka, who played more than 500 games and kicked more than 2000 goals in his country football playing career, has 20 years of experience in coaching, mainly in the bush. For the past two years, he was a development coach at the Northern Blues in the VFL

and prior to that he was coach and football operations manager with Labrador in the QAFL. The 53-year-old wants to use his experience to take St Albans to the next level in terms of professionalism, but is mindful that not everything can translate from state league football to local footy and that his players have nine-to-five jobs. “I’ve been involved with the Northern Blues and Carlton the past couple of years and if I can bring some of that type of professionalism to St Albans and the competition, yeah that’s what we’re trying to do,” Meka said. “You can’t put everything that an AFL club does into St Albans,” he said. “If you divide by two and halve it, you’re still ahead of what most people do though.” Yze, who played 271 games for Melbourne in the AFL, will be available for St Albans on his days off as Hawthorn’s assistant coach, which shows his passion for the game. “I’ve been hounding him for the last four weeks and he finally came good,” said Meka of his cousin. “He took a bit of training last night and was unbelievable. His knowledge is going to be invaluable.”

Lakes import finally finds his feet The language barrier can make it hard at times for Taylors Lakes Cricket Club captain Jarrod Wakeling to truly gauge how the club’s import Dilshan Kanchana is feeling inside his new club. Wakeling sensed it was a nervous young man in Kanchana when he arrived at the start of the season, which is understandable being so far away from home in a foreign country. However, in recent weeks, Kanchana appears more at ease in his new surroundings and his cricket is benefiting as a result. “He’s a youngster who is coming to a new country and his English is limited, so from that perspective it was always going to be difficult,” Wakeling said. “In terms of his overall cricket, what I have noticed in the last couple of weeks is that he seems a lot more confident and he’s playing a bit more within himself, whereas I think he was probably a bit nervous at the start.” Kanchana has offered glimpses into his personality and his game that suggests he could be a weapon for Taylors Lakes in the second half of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season. Having impressed with scores of 70 and 40 with the bat, it was time for Kanchana to show why he came to Australia with a reputation as a quality all-rounder. To the detriment of opposition club Ormond, the 23-year-old from Galle finally had his break-out bowling performance last round with a simply stunning 8-33 off 12.2 overs, eclipsing the club’s first XI record of 8-52 produced by Wakeling earlier this year. Taylors Lakes president Rob Arnold said it took a while for Kanchana to find his feet within the team and that it brought up some question marks that were totally dispelled in his eight-wicket haul. “The concern was that maybe he didn’t move the ball enough, but he clearly showed that he can with his latest bowling performance,” Arnold said. “His last five wickets were all caught behind by the wicketkeeper, where they all seemed to waved the bat out, the ball would move past and get the fine edge, so he’s getting a bit more variance into his bowling.” First year Taylors Lakes coach Janaka Deegodagamage has been a mentor for Kanchana since his arrival. Arnold credits Deegodagamage for the improvements in Kanchana’s game in a short space of time.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The successful bid by the Western Melbourne Group for an A-League team to be based in Tarneit is massive for sport in the west on so many levels. The purpose-built stadium and the associated facilities that will be part of the precinct won’t cost locals a cent and will bring not only an international sporting organisation to the west but much more. It was a bold bid and in the end I think that was what got them over the line. The ignorance of some of the comments from alleged experts regarding the Western Melbourne Group bid was incredible. The way some described it you would have thought the new stadium was being built in a remote, desolate enclave rarely seen by any civilised beings as opposed to Tarneit, a vibrant suburb with a growing population and facilities. Wyndham council backed the bid by gifting the land in-principal, a bold move and one they should feel good about. We all know there are needs and demands for money and support in other areas but the economic benefit of this to the City of Wyndham in particular will be enormous. ■ David Hayes knows horse flesh, as proven by his incredible training feats over decades in the racing industry. He obviously knows a bit about footy as well as he talked his son Will into not hanging up his boots at the end of 2017 and giving his dream one more shot. It paid off as Will won the Footscray VFL best and fairest, went on to be drafted to the Bulldogs in November and now is a professional footballer. Will and the other future stars of the club have been introduced to members and supporters at recent end of year functions. Will is a football stayer, having spent five years in the VFL system waiting for his chance. Williamstown coach Andy Collins spoke last week about the number of AFL-ready players in the VFL, citing Jack Charleston at the Seagulls as another who should get a chance.

Rising stars take on the world By Lance Jenkinson Ten elite young western suburbs athletes will be vying for the prestigious 2018 Don Deeble Sports Star award next month. The Deeble committee will reveal the name of this year’s champion athlete at an awards dinner on the last Wednesday in January. The first nominee was squash player Dylan Molinaro. Molinaro ended the year with selection in the Australian under-19 team after strong performances on the national and Oceania stage. Undaunted by the quality of opposition at the Oceania or Australian championships, he finished on the podium at both major events. While it was a tough year for Australian cricket, the sport is booming in the west. Local star Travis Dean was named Victorian captain and his young Footscray teammate, Dylan Brasher, was the March Deeble nominee after turning heads on the national stage. Brasher, 16, went from breaking records for Western Spirit at the under-18 state titles to

breaking SA bowlers’ hearts with a century at the nationals. Our first female nominee of the year came in April in the form of hammer thrower Louise Mendes. Mendes stamped herself as one of the most promising young throwing prospects in Australia when she took the state and national titles by storm.

The 19-year-old then got the chance to compete on the international stage in Finland, gaining priceless experience in her quest to one day represent Australia at open age level. Cycling sensation Luke Plapp was the May monthly winner. Plapp had a remarkable year on the bike, winning two World Junior Track Cycling Championship events and a silver in the World Time Trial Championships. Martial artist Bailey Lewis was the June nominee. Lewis clocked up the frequent flyer points to compete in the best taekwondo events in the world. The Werribee resident won state and national titles, as well as competitions in Oceania and Europe. Footballer Xavier O’Halloran started the year as the Western Jets’ captain and ended it as a first-round AFL draft pick for the GWS Giants. In between, O’Halloran was the July Deeble nominee and captain of Vic Metro. Hockey rising star Carly James has always been modest about her hockey career. Good thing the experts know a talented player when they see one because James is now part of the emerging Hockeyroos squad and was the Deeble nominee for August. Celeste Mucci achieved a lifelong dream by

representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The national heptathlon champion’s nomination for the September Deeble award was a given considering the heights she reached this year. Later in the year, Mucci captained the Australian under-20 team at the world championships. Baseballer Nikau Pouaka-Grego was the Deeble monthly winner for October. If Pouaka-Grego gets his way, he will one day be gracing the fields of the MLB or the ABL. If that eventuates, 2018 will be remembered as a stepping stone for the Newport Rams infielder. Pouaka-Grego got to strut his stuff for Australia at the Junior Baseball World Cup in Panama and finished the year achieving one of his goals – selection in the Victorian under 16 team for the national championships. The final nominee of the year was versatile track and field athlete Frank Mazza. Mazza could get a stiff neck holding up all the gold medals he won at the Victorian schools track and field championships. He proved to be a true all-rounder, winning gold in the javelin, long jump, triple jump and hurdles.

Honda hits the mark with CR-V By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring

AT A GLANCE

Julie and I were both overdue for a long, relaxing holiday and the offer of a press test of the new fifth generation Honda CR-V arrived at just the right time. It would be hard to pick a better vehicle for reasons that will become evident later in our review. We took the Honda from our Gold Coast home to far western Queensland by way of the Warrego and Landsborough highways through Roma, Charleville and Barcaldine to Longreach. We spent several days on Longreach, touring the Qantas Founders Museum, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre. Not to mention just sitting around, reading or not doing much at all in the wide open spaces. Then back home on the Capricorn and Burnett highways through Emerald and Kingaroy till we joined the boring M1 Motorway and on down to home. We stayed in a farm, a guest house, cabins in camping areas and even a small mining camp. All good fun! Though off-road driving wasn’t part of the plan the fact that the gen-five Honda CR-V has a ground clearance of 208 mm (almost reaching the unofficial 210 mm that’s accepted beneath a true 4WD) meant that we could traverse dirt road with ease as centre humps, fire trails and the like. Two or all-wheel-drive systems are offered, ours was the 2WD, we would have preferred the AWD, but beggars can’t be choosers. Powertrain Power comes from a high-tech 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine. It has 140kW of power and 240Nm of torque all the way from 2000 to 5000 revs.

The CR-V’s engine sits beside a CVT automatic that keeps the revs at exactly the right place all the time. Driving We lowered the beautifully engineered Honda backseats to give us a perfectly flat platform stretching all the way from the tailgate to the front seats. Just behind the front seat backs we placed a bed for boisterous Bailey, our standard French poodle. Behind him was plenty of space for all of our luggage, including handle areas in the rear corners for items we didn’t want to

move around. Driving on smooth roads the Honda was quiet and unflustered, indeed there was near silence from the tyres on motorways. Some coarse-chip surfaces – and there are plenty of them in the outback – added significant noise, but not to an uncomfortable level. Comfort is good and the seats support well even over ultra long distances. Steering is light and responsive, but obviously I didn’t try any hard cornering as neither my wife nor our dog would have appreciated it. The cruise control is easy to set up and adjust

on the move. For some reason every time I go into the dry areas of the Australian bush it rains. This trip was no different and when we were on the Warrego Highway there were times the Honda’s wipers were flat out and we had to slow to 80km/h. Once west of the Dividing Range the speed limit is 110km/h so the engine was sitting at 2100rpm virtually all the time. The CR-V’s engine is smooth and responsive with a minimum of turbo lag. The transmission is always in the correct ratio – which is hardly a surprise given that it has an infinite number of ‘gears’ between the lowest and highest ratios in the automatic. So good is the powertrain that we averaged a mere 6.6 litres per hundred kilometres for the entire trip of just over 2500 kilometres.
