The world’s best junior table tennis players showcased their talent in Sunshine West last week. Simon Gerada, a former Olympian and owner of Loops Table Tennis, said he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get the world’s best to Brimbank. “The junior world championships are being held in Bendigo in early December and obviously with athletes coming from all over the world, they’re not just going to arrive the night before,” Mr Gerada said. “They needed a venue to train, so I thought what better opportunity.” Mr Gerada said 15 players in the world’s top 20 trained at Sunshine West for six days. “We had players from Romania, Russia, Poland, France, USA, Canada and Australia,” he said. “It was amazing to see how intensely they train. We held two sessions a day for six days, with a third session at eight [pm] each night.” However it wasn’t all business. “We took them out to get to see Melbourne a bit too,” Mr Gerada said. “They went for a tour and dinner in the city one night and another day we took them to Werribee Zoo. “A lot of them hadn’t seen kangaroos or koalas before, so we wanted to make it a great experience.”

Calder’s urgent safety call By Tate Papworth A spectacular crash which left a large truck dangling precariously over the edge of the Calder Freeway above Green Gully Road last month has highlighted the need for urgent safety improvements to the freeway, according to Brimbank’s new mayor. On November 20, a truck slammed into the side barrier of the Green Gully Road overpass at Keilor – scattering debris onto the road below and throwing peak hour traffic into chaos. Brimbank council is seeking a briefing with Victoria Police and VicRoads on the circumstances of the crash. However mayor Lucinda Congreve said

safety upgrades on the Calder were desperately needed. “Last month’s horrendous accident could so easily have been tragic – we were very fortunate that no lives were lost,” Cr Congreve said. “But we cannot rely on luck to keep us safe.” Cr Congreve said the road’s poor accident record justifies significant investment in safety upgrades. She said there had been 35 crashes on the Calder, between the M80 and Melton Highway, in the five years to December 2016. “Brimbank council has repeatedly called on state and federal governments to invest in the Calder Freeway in order to improve safety, reduce congestion and cater for population and

freight growth. “The Calder Freeway is a key link in the National Land Transport Network that connects Melbourne with the regional centre of Bendigo, and beyond to north-west regional Victoria. “We need state and federal governments to invest in lifting this crucial infrastructure up to freeway standard. “Between the Western Ring Road (M80) and the Melton Highway, there are sections of the Calder Freeway where the speed limit drops to 80km/h and where there are no emergency stopping lanes – including the Green Gully Road overpass where last week’s crash took place.” The Calder Freeway crash.

New food for thought By Tate Papworth Backyard composting could soon be the norm in Brimbank. The council is hoping to encourage households to manage their food and garden organic waste at home. Cr Kim Thien Truong moved a motion at last month’s council meeting requesting a number of options for Brimbank households to recycle their food and organic waste be investigated. “The management of organic food and garden waste is an important topic and a step in the right direction for the environment,” Cr Truong said. “Around half of our household garbage is made up of food and garden waste. Council currently collects garden organic waste from around half of all households.

“We know that reducing levels of waste from our kitchens and gardens can contribute to reducing overall waste going to landfill.” She said the benefits from introducing a backyard composting or similar system would be numerous. “Rather than putting this type of waste in the bin, a household organic processing system creates a useful product for the garden that helps to retain water and nutrients to build resilience to drought,” she said. “The organics in landfill break down in a way that can create greenhouse gasses, including methane, which affect air quality and contribute to climate change. “A program like this would [also] help encourage a love of gardening in the

community, which is a healthy and popular activity, especially for senior residents. “It’s important that we support and educate the community to get involved in ways that help the environment.” The council will introduce a kerbside food and garden organic collection service as part of its new waste, recycling and litter strategy to be rolled out across the municipality. However mayor Lucinda Congreve said a composting program would have longer lasting benefits. “Supporting backyard composting can complement a future kerbside collection of food and garden organics, by reducing the quantity of material that must be collected, transported and processed,” Cr Congreve said.

Warm weather warning for snakes Brimbank’s free snake catcher service is in demand, receiving several calls a day to remove snakes from private properties or public spaces. With the summer heat still to kick in, one resident in Deer Park said he has seen “at least 14 brown snakes” near the walking track at Isabella Williams Memorial Reserve in Deer Park. Brimbank’s snake catcher service was re-introduced in October 2017 following a two-year hiatus. Council’s acting director of city development Matt Aquilina said residents should know what steps to take if they encounter a slithery companion. “Council provides a no charge professional snake catching service seven days a week and after hours to remove snakes from residential properties in Brimbank,” Mr Aquilina said. “If you find a snake at home, do not touch or attempt to remove the snake yourself. “Watch it from a safe distance, remove any people or pets from the area, and call council on 9249 4000 to arrange for our professional snake catcher to come and remove it. “If you see a snake on council land, for example at your local park, call council on 9249 4000.” The most common snakes in the Brimbank area are brown, tiger and red bellied black snakes. Chickens killed in cruelty case Police are appealing for information regarding a shocking act of animal cruelty. About 11.10am on Thursday, October 11, the owner of a property on Cawood Drive, Sunshine West went to feed chickens she was keeping in her backyard but found them dead. Sunshine Police’s Constable Jarrod Simons claimed the chickens were killed by humans. “It was a clean cut to chop the heads off, so we’re confident it wasn’t done by animals,” he said. Constable Simons said police had spoken to neighbours on all sides of the property, but at this stage have no leads. “The next door neighbour has dogs that bark, but there wasn’t any commotion at the time this has occurred, which is unusual,” he said. “The backyard backs out onto a paddock, so it would have been easy to gain access by the rear of the property.” Police are urging anyone with information on the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the Community Services and Infrastructure Plan 2018-2038 was a vital tool in guiding future investment in infrastructure projects and services. “Brimbank is evolving. It is a dynamic, bustling and growing community at the heart of Melbourne’s booming west,” she said. “Council recognises the importance of being innovative and future-focused as we respond to Brimbank’s changing community needs over the next 20 years.” Cr Congreve said a number of vital areas are covered in the report. “The plan covers access to wide-ranging community facilities and services that are modern and flexible including community health, meeting spaces, early years services, libraries, neighbourhood houses, and arts and culture,” she said.

River wrecks a ‘tragedy’ By Tate Papworth Sydenham Park is home to some of the state’s most unique flora and fauna – and dumped cars. In the past six months, the number of cars dumped in the park along the Maribyrnong River has been as high as seven. Neil Hunichen, a regular visitor to the park, said the “environmental tragedy” was putting one of the region’s nature attractions at risk. “There’s reports that there might be platypus in the river we’re talking about and at the moment we have five cars upside down and oil visibly leaking into the water,” he said. Mr Hunichen said he’d alerted the appropriate authorities to the problem six months ago, when there were just two cars at the site off McNabs Road. “To access the area in question, you have to go through Melbourne Airport land, but Melbourne Water are responsible for the river,” Mr Hunichen said. “It’s completely unacceptable that no action has been taken to fix such an obvious problem.” A Melbourne Water spokesperson said the organisation was aware of the problem, but the location had made retrieving vehicles difficult. Despite having been alerted to the problem six months ago, Melbourne Water is waiting on “more stable seasonal conditions” before retrieving the cars. “We are aware of the presence of dumped vehicles at the intersection of the Maribyrnong River and Deep Creek,” the spokesperson said. “We have engaged a contractor to remove the vehicles. However, given the challenging location, the contractor advised holding off on removing the vehicles until the arrival of more stable seasonal conditions and a number of safety concerns were met at the site.

“We are working closely with Melbourne Airport to gain access to the site and remove the cars in the coming weeks, subject to suitable weather conditions. We plan to update the community on completion of the works.” Mr Hunichen said retrieving the cars would only partially fix the problem. “The entry point people are using to access

the park is on Melbourne Airport land,” he said. “They need to put a block up on the road to stop people accessing it.” Melbourne Airport corporate and public affairs executive Jai McDermott said the airport was working with the City of Hume to prevent illegal access to the area.

Mail order drugs deliver jail time Attempting to import heroin valued at almost a million dollars has landed a man and a woman in prison. Huong Thuy Ly and Hoang Thanh Lee were each sentenced in the County Court to four years jail. Ly pleaded guilty to importing a border controlled drug while Lee pleaded guilty to attempting to possess a border controlled drug. The court heard the pair attempted to obtain 3.98 kilograms of heroin in a package from Thailand, mailed to a St Albans house, in November 2015. The drugs were valued about $877,000. Two other people involved in the trafficking ring were sentenced in March 2017 to four and eight years jail respectively for their roles in the crime. The court heard Ly co-ordinated sending the package from overseas, as well as communicating the delivery address in St Albans to a third party. Lee received payments connected to the delivery of the package, and also instructed one of his co-accused in how to test the substance inside the package once it was delivered. Lee, who was overseas at the time of the crime, was arrested in August 2016. Ly was charged in November, 2016. Ly must serve at least two years and three months jail before being eligible for parole. A 36-year-old Sunshine man and a 53-year-old Keilor man were among 11 people arrested and charged with a range of drug and firearm offences across the north west last week. Police are investigating armed robberies in Braybrook and Maribyrnong last week. Investigators have been told a man entered a restaurant on Ashley Street, Braybrook about 8.40pm on November 24, and produced a firearm before stealing cash and fleeing on a bicycle. It is believed the same man robbed a service station on Williamson Road, Maribyrnong at gun point about 10.15pm on November 27. He is described as Caucasian in appearance, between 20 and 30 years old, and about 170-180cm tall. Child’s play launches new career By Tate Papworth Edward Zammit is a big kid at heart – the Hillside man has been inventing toys and games for the past 25 years. Among his inventions is a Play-Doh game and the spiralight, which is on sale through Disney. After a number of successful creations, Mr Zammit is diversifying. Four years ago he came up with a concept for The Luna Moonies – magical characters who live on the moon.

Mr Zammit said the idea quickly evolved. “There’s a lot of books on fairies and bush characters, so I wanted something a bit more creative,” he said. “I wanted to initially come up with my own characters for a toy line. “But once I’d done that, I wrote books, formed a band, wrote some music and it went from there.” The Luna Moonies are now getting used to performing. “We’ve spoken to a lot of shopping centres and we’ve also performed at Luna Park a number of times,” Mr Zammit said. “We actually got to perform at their [Luna Park’s] 103rd birthday which was a great experience. We’ve also done concerts and Scienceworks and the Good Friday Appeal.” While he’s happy with the growing popularity of the Moonies, Mr Zammit is hoping to expand the renown of his creations. “We’ve just released the book so we’re hoping

that goes well and we’re also hoping to develop a TV pilot,” he said. With a quarter of a century of experience, Mr Zammit has one piece of advice for any budding inventors.

“You have to form relationships with the companies, but you can’t just have one idea,” he said. “I’ve invented and submitted hundreds of ideas over the years. You have to be flexible, but you also need to keep an eye on the market

and pay attention to what’s in fashion at the time.” Mr Zammitt will be signing copies of the Luna Moonies CDs and books at Dymocks Watergardens this Saturday from noon-2pm.

Labor builds on upper house By Ewen McRae Labor’s stranglehold on the west of Melbourne has spread to the upper house, with the ALP likely to pick up an extra representative for the region following last month’s election. Labor held two of the five places for the western metropolitan region of the Legislative Council going into the state election, with the Liberal’s Bernie Finn, Greens’ Huong Truong, and former Democratic Labor Party member turned independent Rachel Carling-Jenkins filling the remaining three seats.

Ms Carling-Jenkins did not recontest her place in the upper house, instead running as an unsuccessful candidate in the lower house seat of Werribee against treasurer Tim Pallas. Labor’s Khalil Eidah also did not re-contest this election. Counting in the upper house is continuing, but it appears that Ms Truong will lose her place in the Parliament, with the Greens losing their representative for the region despite the third highest vote count. Incumbent Labor candidate Cesar Melhem was re-elected, and looks like being joined by

Ingrid Stitt and Kaushaliya Virjibhai Vaghela as the three Labor members of the Legislative Council in Melbourne’s west. Mr Finn will also return to the upper house for a fourth straight term. The final position looks like going to Derryn Hinch Justice Party candidate Catherine Cumming. Mr Hinch said on Facebook they would be a strong voice for law and order in the state. “Thank you Victoria,” he said. “You elected Justice Party candidates to the Upper House.

“We don’t know yet how many. It is definitely one, and maybe three or four. It will give us vital input into law and order issues in this state.” The count of upper house ballots could take a number of weeks to determine the winners. Ms Truong told supporters on the night of the election she was proud of the campaign the Greens had run. “I’m so proud that we were able to do this in the most Greens way possible,” she said. “I don’t think I have ever enjoyed a campaign as much as I have this one.”

Hutchins steps back Industrial Relations, Women, and Prevention of Family Violence portfolios, and has played a key role in implementing the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. She said she was proud of all she had been able to achieve. “I am proud to have been a part of a government that committed to treaty with the states’ traditional owners, improved conditions for vulnerable workers, established Respect Victoria and ensured women have an equal voice in everything it does,” Ms Hutchins said. “I look forward to working hard to keep delivering for the western suburbs as part of the Andrews Labor government into the future.” Ms Hutchins will stay involved in the area of Aboriginal Affairs through her role as the Parliamentary Secretary for Treaty in the new government.

Newly re-elected MP Natalie Hutchins has stepped down from the cabinet. The member for Sydenham was re-elected to Parliament for a third term in the recent state election, but released a statement shortly after stating that she wanted to spend more time with her family. “I would like to thank the voters of Sydenham for electing me for a third term as their representative in Parliament,” Ms Hutchins said. “After an amazing four years as a minister in the Andrews Labor government I have decided not to recontest my position in the cabinet in order to focus on my family and myself after the passing of my husband Stephen Hutchins last year. “I would like to thank the Premier for his steadfast professional and personal support in good and bad times, as well as the cabinet team.” Ms Hutchins held the Aboriginal Affairs,

Man jailed over fatal stabbing By Ewen McRae

On November 15, 2018 Ivan BUHAC failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court to answer charges including burglary, theft of motor vehicle, driving whilst disqualified, possessing a drug of dependence and failing to answer bail. Four warrants have been issued for his arrest. Police are seeking information as to BUHAC’s current whereabouts.

A Sunshine West man who stabbed his partner and killed her secret husband has been sentenced in the Supreme Court to 15 years jail. Hung Anh Vu was found guilty of the manslaughter of Hung Viet Nguyen and recklessly causing serious injury to Laura Chan, following an incident on August 5, 2017. The court heard that Vu and Ms Chan were in a relationship and had two teenage sons together, but Vu had spent several years away from them while in jail for drug trafficking in New South Wales. During that time, Ms Chan started a relationship with Mr Nguyen and they married in 2015. When Vu returned from NSW in August 2016 he moved back in with Ms Chan, but she maintained her relationship with Mr Nguyen in secret. The court heard that on the day of the killing, Vu had the secret relationship confirmed to him by his mother and sons. He invited Mr Nguyen to his home to confront him and Ms Chan. He hid a hunting knife under a cushion on a dining table chair before the pair arrived. A friend of Vu spoke to him that afternoon and, sensing Vu was agitated, went to the house and was present in the room when Vu confronted Ms Chan and Mr Nguyen. The friend gave evidence that Vu was shouting at Ms Chan and Mr Nguyen to admit

to their relationship, and at one point stood up with the knife in his hand, prompting the friend to grab him from behind in a bear hug. A struggle ensued, during which both Mr Nguyen and Ms Chan were stabbed. The evidence of the friend and Ms Chan gave contrasting views of how the stabbings occurred, however a jury and Judge Andrew Tinney were satisfied Vu had inflicted the wounds. Mr Nguyen collapsed and could not be revived. An autopsy revealed the knife had penetrated his aorta and pierced his lung. Ms Chan was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with a wound to the chest and spent four days in the trauma ward. Vu initially told police the pair had stabbed themselves out of shame over their relationship, before changing his story to claim the stabbings occurred accidentally. Judge Tinney said the premeditated nature of the crime made it a particularly serious case. “Your attacks upon the two victims did not happen out of the blue,” Judge Tinney said. “They occurred in the context of the relationship they were having behind your back, your having found out about that relationship, and the powerful anger and resentment that arose due to that knowledge. “The sentence I pass on you must be such as to bring it home clearly to others in the community who may be minded to act with extreme violence … that such behaviour will be met with strong punishment.” Vu will be eligible for parole in 11 years.

Shakespeare shake up A new community youth theatre project is planning to bring an explosive new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet to St Albans. St Albans Edge consists of 12 teenage girls from diverse backgrounds collaborating to create Grace for Race; an investigation into racism, outdated stereotypes, girlhood and teen cult classic, Riverdale. The project is directed by Western Edge Youth Artists associate director Penny Harpham, and facilitated by Rex Pelman, Michael Logo and Amarachi Okorom. Ms Okorom said the girls’ backgrounds make for a powerful performance. “Culture is a huge part of this play, and as a young African female who also grew up in a western country, it warms my heart to see a

group of younger African-Australian girls get a chance to speak and be heard,” Ms Okorom said. The coming-of-age performance offers lived experiences from a year 11 Sudanese woman in the midst of the APEX media frenzy; a Samoan daughter balancing family responsibilities and her studies; a Liberian student obsessed with Nicki Minaj; and a 12-year-old Nigerian girl wanting revenge for culture wars started generations ago. Crossing campaign pays dividends By Tate Papworth A long community campaign to have three level crossings along the Ballarat line removed has paid off. Days before the state election, St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman joined Premier Daniel Andrews and promised to remove the crossings at Station Road, Deer Park; Robinsons Road, Deer Park; and Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West if re-elected. The crossings have been included on the state government’s list of removals by 2025.

The government also pledged to upgrade the Deer Park train station. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said a lot of advocacy work had gone into achieving the outcome. “In June we invited relevant state government ministers, shadow ministers and local MPs to

Deer Park train station during morning peak hour, to witness first-hand the traffic chaos at the level crossing,” Cr Congreve said. “In September, we delivered a community petition signed by 3000 locals to the office of Member for St Albans, Natalie Suleyman, calling for the removal of these level crossings. “This announcement is testament to what can be achieved when council and the community work together to bring about change.” The council contends that increased train services along the Ballarat line and increasing traffic have created an urgent need for grade

separations. It says boom gates at the crossings are down for 30-40 minutes per hour during morning peak times, creating a traffic choke point. This includes periods of up to nine minutes where multiple trains are going through, including trains stopping at Deer Park. The council claims the roads are so heavily congested in peak periods that drivers are becoming frustrated and engaging in dangerous driving behaviour. Buses also face substantial delays at the Station Road and Fitzgerald Road crossings.

More than they can bear A St Albans sewing club has delivered more than 100 hand knitted teddy bears to Ambulance Victoria to help provide comfort for children experiencing a traumatic event. The St Albans Sew and Chat Club has spent months working on the trauma teddies, which paramedics give to children to help keep them calm. Ambulance Victoria senior member Georgie Hall said the teddies played an important role for the paramedics. “The idea is that when we attend a scene with children, we can give them the teddy so they can point on it to show us where the pain is,” Ms Hall said. “But they also get to keep the teddy afterwards as a bit of a security thing, so it’s a pretty important tool for us. “It’s great to say thank you to the group, and for one branch this would be one of the bigger donations we have received … it’s a huge effort.”

The sewing group of more than 30, which is supported by Brimbank council with materials and wool, has met every week to create the teddies. The group has knitters ranging in age from 50 up into the 90s, and was presented with a certificate of appreciation from Ambulance Victoria last week. Push to boost tourism in the west By Charlene Macaulay

Grey day can’t stop honour Wild weather didn’t dampen the occasion when Keilor Cemetery marked the planting of a Gallipoli oak. Despite torrential rain, a large group of people gathered at the cemetery last month for the official planting. Keilor Historical Society president Susan Jennison said the weather offered an opportunity to reflect. “I had to stand out in the weather and host in my role as president and I couldn’t help but think how lucky I was,” Ms Jennison said. “When the service was finished I was able to go inside a building, or my car. Our soldiers didn’t have the luxury.” Keilor resident Judy Ralph (pictured) was a guest of honour at the ceremony. Ms Ralph, 81, is related to the four Anderson brothers from Keilor who fought at Gallipoli. The brothers, who were Ms Ralph’s uncles, survived the war and returned home to Keilor. One of the brothers, Donald, is buried at Keilor Cemetery. “It’s a meaningful place,” Ms Jennison said. “A large number of people in the community are descendants of those buried at the cemetery.” The tree planted at the cemetery is a direct descendent of acorns collected by Captain William Winter-Cooke who sent them back home to his uncle at Hamilton in Victoria.

Enhancing parks and gardens, activating the bay and supporting the development of key visitor attractions are the hallmarks of a Western Melbourne Tourism plan to boost tourism in the west by 21 per cent over the next decade. The regional tourism board, which launched its Melbourne’s West Destination Management Visitor plan, aims to attract 4.3 million visitors to the west by the 2026-27 financial year and boost overnight stays by 90 per cent to 12.4 million stays. Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Melton, Wyndham and Moonee Valley attracted 3.6 million visitors over 2017-18, with 76 per cent making day trips and 20 per cent staying overnight. The west’s tourism economy currently brings in $1.45 billion. Visiting parks and gardens was the top must-do attraction (45 per cent) as identified in a visitor survey, followed by shopping (24 per cent), art, museums and cultural attractions (23 per cent) and restaurants and cafes (22 per cent). Western Melbourne Tourism executive officer Richard Ponsford said enhancing the west’s natural assets – including parks, gardens, the bay coastline and industrial precincts like the Newport rail yards – was a key part of the plan. Mr Ponsford said it was also important to boost accommodation options in the region, with the west having above-average rates of visitors coming in for day trips and not staying overnight. He said the new Airport rail link and international flights in and out of Avalon Airport would be game changers for tourism in the west.

Help needed to raise a smile By Ewen McRae The Raise Foundation is on the hunt for the next crop of youth mentors as it prepares for a big 2019. The charity – which runs mentoring programs for high school students – is looking for mentors to help it run programs at Sunshine Secondary College’s North and Ardeer campuses, as up to 29 students are waiting on a mentor. The program is aimed at students at risk of disengaging from education. Ahead of International Volunteer Day on

December 5, Raise evaluation director Carol Sandiford said the mentor program had a valuable role in the community. “At Raise Foundation we believe that change comes from the heart of local communities and rely on these communities for our volunteer mentors,” Ms Sandiford said. “We wanted to take the opportunity on International Volunteer Day to say a big thank you to our volunteers, as well as a call-out to those who can spare two hours a week next year and help to change a young person’s life. “An unexpected benefit of volunteering is that it’s not just the young people who benefit.

Farewelled with love Teachers at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College have left a parting gift for the school’s students. A number of teachers met in secret over the past term and covered the school’s basketball court fence with hearts crocheted from different coloured yarn. The fence will soon be removed to make way for a new multi-purpose hall to be built next year. Caroline Chisholm Catholic College learning support officer Maria Vella said the concept was designed to spread a positive message to students as they left their last assembly for the year. “One of our lead teachers thought of the idea after the musical we did earlier in the year which required some crochet work,” Ms Vella said. “We thought the idea of putting love hearts up shows our appreciation for all

the hard work the students have put in over the year.” Ms Vella said the teachers hoped the message would spread beyond the school’s grounds. “Each one has two hearts put together,” she said. “The idea is that the students take one and gift one to somebody else. “So we show our love and appreciation, then they pay if forward to someone else.” The crochet element also played a significant part. In a digital, fast-paced world, the teachers believe the act of making something by hand is the complete opposite – patient, slow, imperfect and rewarding. MY BRIMBANK Joyce Dalde has worked at Sunshine Hospital for six years and recently won a Western Health Inspire Award. She speaks with Ewen McRae. What is your connection to Brimbank?

to improve patient care, you influence and develop the potential of talented and skilled nurses. Every day is a challenge. My top three greatest challenges are leading and implementing changes, as people can sometimes be resistant to change; knowing your staff day in and day out (if they’re having personal difficulties, you can’t help but be there for them on a personal level – as I have 50 nursing staff, sometimes this takes a toll on me); and maintaining the balance between the needs of the nursing staff and the needs of the organisation. It’s really tough because you’re accountable for everything on your ward, such as quality and safety, budget, staff, patient satisfaction, occupational health and safety, and improvements on the ward. It’s extremely challenging, but I have an excellent team and great management support – they’re the reasons why I love my work.

I came to Australia in 2004 and have been living in the area for the past 10 years. I’ve made friends with people I’ve met at the parks and in local stores … I feel a real sense of community here. What do you like best about the area? It’s the location! It’s close to the city and my workplace, it’s a quiet neighbourhood and there are lots of local shops, parks and shopping malls. Its diverse nationalities make me feel like I’m at home. What could make the area better? I wish there was more health education in the community to improve people’s understanding about illnesses and more extended hours for clinics/GPs in the area to support and follow-up with our patients after they’ve been discharged.

I don’t really have a favourite place to go as Brimbank has lots of restaurants to choose from – we’re lucky. I guess it depends on the cuisine you crave that day. It’s such an honour to receive this prestigious award. Helping a colleague as a patient who had tragically lost her children in an accident was definitely the hardest situation I’ve ever dealt with, both personally and professionally. But with great support behind me, I was able to overcome the challenges. To be nominated validates my hard work and dedication. And winning the award motivates me to do more and give more, knowing that the organisation I work for recognises and values my contribution.

Large trucks parked in residential streets in the western suburbs are causing major problems for councils, but moves to regulate the parking of trucks is being strongly resisted by drivers. Last week in Melton truckies declared all-out war with Melton Council when they thought council was drawing up proposals to keep them out of the shire.

Sunshine Swimming Centre’s main outdoor pool has sprung a leak and has been closed down. But there are no plans yet to cure the problem in the same way as at Deer Park swimming pool – by bulldozing it out of existence.

A state government decision to reject Brimbank as the site for a multi million-dollar airport rail link was a victory for residents, the Mayor of Brimbank, councillor Sam David said. He said the construction of the Melbourne Airport link through the Albion corridor would have had severe economic, structural and environmental impacts on the municipality.

Hundreds of people are being turned away from short-term crisis accommodation in Sunshine because the beds are already full – a situation youth worker Les Twentyman last week vowed to address. Western Region Accommodation Program team leader Jodi Brown told The Advocate that in the 2006-07 financial year the Parson Street rooms (built in 1994) had housed 104 people.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a restaurant staking its claim in Sunshine DaLat Hill Sunshine has a Vietnamese name, but there’s no rice paper rolls or pho here. Instead, they are going their own sweet way, developing a niche based around steak, along with regular cafe fare. Here you can get T-bone, ribeye, scotch fillet and the like at fair prices. But the place’s big drawcard, one designed to get new customers through the door yet also remain an always available “special”, is the Special Rump Steak for $10. We are a little surprised to be asked how we want our meat cooked, as we figure the $10 steak will be of the ultra-thin variety sometimes served as part of Vietnamese steak-and-eggs and for which precise cooking instructions are pretty much irrelevant. So … medium rare for us both. How good can a $10 steak be? The answer, at DaLat Hill Sunshine, is … just fine. Sure, you’ll not be chowing down here on prime, big-bucks beef, but our steaks are enjoyable nonetheless. And they’re nicely sized for our Saturday lunch, steak not normally being something we would otherwise ever consider ordering for anything other than an evening meal. And then, only very rarely. But what makes our meals more than just adequately satisfying – and propels them into realms of bargain pleasure – is the care taken with the accompaniments and the presentation. The mashed potato is very, very good.

In order to be reimbursed for any urgent repairs you must be able to show the repair was not your fault, that you tried to reach the landlord or property manager and that the repairs were carried out by a licensed tradesperson. Urgent repairs a landlord needs to fix as soon as possible are: • A burst water service or a serious water service leak • A blocked or broken toilet • A serious roof leak • A gas leak • A dangerous electrical fault • Flooding or serious flood damage • Serious storm or fire damage • A failure or breakdown of the gas, electricity or water supply to the premises • A failure or breakdown of the hot water service • A failure or breakdown of the stove or oven • A failure or breakdown of a heater or air-conditioner • A fault or damage which makes the premises unsafe or insecure.

What do an infestation of termites, a leaking roof and a broken oven have in common? They’re all considered urgent repairs a landlord must attend to as quickly as possible. Issues around repairs are one of the most common complaints tenants raise with tenant advocacy services. It’s a good idea to let the property manager or landlord know about maintenance issues as soon as they arise. It’s important to keep track of all correspondence around your repair issue. Keep a record of phone calls, including the date and who you spoke to, and, where appropriate, take photos of the item requiring attention and forward them to the property manager or landlord. The biggest barrier for tenants to get repairs carried out can be the perceived threat of a “no grounds” eviction. While lease terminations do occur, they’re not common, and tenants should persist in their efforts to have repairs completed. If your property manager or landlord is unreachable, there are circumstances where you can organise a repair yourself.

SPORT By Lance Jenkinson Boom recruit Jack Redpath will be ready to hit the ground running for reigning premier Deer Park in the Western Region Football League division 1. The former Western Bulldogs spearhead was forced to retire from AFL football at the end last season due to a knee injury. After 36 games and 57 goals in the AFL, Redpath felt his knee was not up to the rigours of AFL football, prematurely retiring at the age of 27. The good news for Deer Park fans is that his rehabilitation from knee surgery is complete and he is ready to begin training again. “From my discussions with him, he had his MRI cleared last week and has been given the green light to start training,” Lions’ coach Marc Bullen said. “He’s told me he wants to rip into it from the commencement of pre-season.” One of Deer Park’s strengths in its record-breaking run of six consecutive premierships has been its ability to manage the workloads of players. The Lions will undoubtedly urge Redpath to move forth cautiously, however Bullen will trust him to manage his training schedule. “Jack knows his body,” Bullen said. “He was in the Bulldogs’ leadership team, so knows

what to do and when to do it.” Redpath will be the focal point of a starstudded forward line. If Redpath can click with mainstay Jase Perkins, who kicked 68 goals last campaign, and James Wong, another proven goalkicker, it will be a nightmare for opposition defenders.

“They will form a pretty formidable combination,” Bullen said. “Hopefully they can share the goalscoring load between them. “There will be an abundance of marking power down there.” Even though Redpath has proven himself at the top level with the Bulldogs and dominated locally with Kyneton in the Bendigo Football League, going to the six-time reigning premiers Deer Park will have a new set of pressures. “If anything, he’s a bit nervous coming into the football because he knows how successful we’ve been,” Bullen said. “He wants to make sure that he impacts, which I’m sure he will.” Redpath is not the only big name to arrive at Deer Park. Daniel Harris, who played 160 AFL games with North Melbourne and Gold Coast Suns, and Damien Cavka, once on the West Coast Eagles’ list, have also joined for the premiership defence. Harris has played mainly as a half-forward since returning to local football, while Cavka will bolster the Lions’ midfield. Rumours of Redpath’s former Bulldogs teammate Shane Biggs joining Deer Park have been quashed. “Our recruitment books are well and truly closed,” Bullen said. “We won’t be signing any more players.”

Taylors Lakes gets monkey off its back Taylors Lakes has broken through for its first win of the summer in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. It was a gutsy Lions’ outfit that overcame Elsternwick by six runs in a thrilling one-day game at Elsternwick Park on Saturday. After getting bowled out for just 153 in 42.4 overs, Taylors Lakes had to fight tooth and nail to ensure a successful defence of a small total. The Lions restricted the Wicks to 9-147 off their maximum 45 overs to secure victory. Taylors Lakes made a positive start with the match with the bat, surpassing 50 with the loss of one wicket. However, a steady stream of wickets thereafter made for a stop-start innings. Openers Chris Marr (29) and Michael Brne (20) and No. 5 Dilshan Kanchana (19) were the top run scorers for Taylors Lakes. The main generation of runs in the innings though were extras gifted by the Wicks bowlers – 32 in all – which included 23 runs from wides. It took a team effort from Taylors Lakes to defend a small total in 30-degree heat. Skipper Jarrod Wakeling led the way for the Lions with an economical and damaging 3-22 off nine overs. Three Lions – Samual Clark (2-19 off 7), Nipun Sumanasinghe (2-27 off 9) and Liam Wolf (2-40 off 8) – snared two important wickets apiece. Lachlan Marr’s wicketkeeping was crucial for the Lions. Marr produced three stumpings off three different bowlers. The monkey is off the back for Taylors Lakes, which was the last remaining team to register a win in the south-west group. The Lions will be hoping to keep on their winning ways when they host Ormond in a two-day game next. Meanwhile, the VSDCA will take on the Victorian Country Cricket League in its annual representative game this Sunday in Geelong. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The big name recruits continue to make John McLeod Reserve home after their AFL careers are over. Jack Redpath follows Ryan Houlihan, Brendan Fevola, Ryan Hargrave, Shannon Byrne and Brent Guerra to don the Lions’ colours during the club’s most successful era. Rumour had Jack’s Bulldog teammate Shane Biggs joining him, but he has signed with North Heidelberg. Big Red will be awesome if his knee stands up to the vagaries of local footy grounds. He showed in his limited appearances for the Bulldogs what a dominant presence he is in attack. The Lions have added other quality players and will again start raging favourites for their seventh successive division one flag. ■ Redpath is the biggest name on the clearance page but not the most surprising. I was intrigued to see Nayef Hamad move to Werribee Districts, from Spotswood, and Daniel Bunworth leaving Wyndhamvale. Hamad is a listed Footscray VFL player and if that continues he will have divided commitments. Bunworth moves to Point Cook after coaching the Falcons for the past couple of years. He is the sort of player that will be very beneficial to the WRFL Bulldogs in their adjustment to division one. ■ The Werribee and Hoppers Crossing cricketers can be well pleased with the results of their recent Movember charity game, which raised $4500. The Tigers took home the shield, giving them a 3-2 lead in the meetings. The Tigers are feasting on the back of some great batting from Matt Dean, who followed up his 113 with a match-winning 97 at the weekend. Brother Sean chimed in with 53 to make it a big weekend for the family and Travis starred for Footscray with an 80. On a sad note, former president and life member Lou Tardrew passed away last week following a short illness. Lou’s efforts and passion for both the Werribee Cricket and Football clubs will be long remembered. Condolences to his wife Margaret, family and friends. ■ Apologies for naming Greg Kennedy in the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club Hall of Fame in last week’s column when it was, in fact, Greg Mitchell. Kennedy might get there one day but for now, as senior playing coach of the Hoppers Crossing first XI, he has more pressing matters. Wasn’t a watershed weekend for local clubs with Werribee winning, but Altona, Hoppers, Williamstown and Yarraville were all defeated.

Deer Park keen to measure up against benchmark side Deer Park is still the real deal in the Bowls Victoria premier division, despite a hiccup on its home green against contenders Clayton at Ballarat Road on Saturday. The Lions let it slip late in a nail-biting 68-63 loss. While Lions president Neil Cromie conceded it was a costly defeat, he remains unwavering in his belief that his side is a threat to the contenders in their second season in the top flight. “Not that there’s any guarantees in sport, but [a win] today would’ve gone a long way to us setting ourselves up for a strong finish to the season,” he said. “It means we’ve just got to fight harder now. “I’m obviously biased, but I think we’re good enough to play finals this season.

“On performances at this stage of the season, we’d deserve to play finals.” It was a game that had you on the edge of your seat throughout. Deer Park held a slender lead late on, but Clayton refused to yield and finished the stronger. “It was tight all day,” Cromie said. “We got a couple in front and we looked like we were getting the better of them, but they fought back. “It came down to virtually the last three rinks playing their last ends. To their credit, they fought it out and unfortunately for us, they were in front at the business end.” Brett Mahoney and Aaron Wood both enjoyed eight-shot victories. Mahoney was

victorious 21-13, while Wood scored a 20-12 win. It was not enough to paper over the cracks in the other two rinks. James Pearce was on the wrong end of an 18-12 scoreline, while Chris Ball lost 25-10. It will not get any easier for Deer Park next start. The Lions will face ladder leader Essendon away on Saturday. Cromie sees the game as an opportunity for his team to evaluate itself against another strong opponent. “It’ll be a hell of a game next Saturday,” Cromie said. “They’re the benchmark at the moment and we’ll see how good we are when we play them.” Lance Jenkinson

When Sunshine broke its first XI premiership drought in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association last summer, its appetite was not totally suppressed. The Crows were obviously ecstatic to secure their first top-flight flag since 1983-84, but it only left them hungry for more. After re-signing the bulk of last summer’s heroes and enjoying a strong recruiting campaign, the Crows have moved up a tier to division 3 with confidence. Crows’ captain Troy Stone has urged his players from day one of pre-season to be on the hunt for another premiership. “We unfurled the flag and I sort of put it to the boys, we’ve won one, why can’t we win another one?” he said. “We’ve gone out and recruited pretty well and held on to everyone from last year. The buzz is there [from last year’s premiership], but the buzz is to win another one.” For years, Sunshine’s first XI struggled in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. Some of those summers before the move to the VTCA were spent merely making up the numbers. Last season’s premiership has instilled belief that Sunshine can begin its climb up the divisions in the VTCA. “We know what it takes now,” Stone said. Most important for Sunshine is the mix in its playing list. The Crows are well balanced with players who are eager to hit the repeat button and others who are keen to taste success for the first

time. There is depth in the top two sides and competition for places is fierce. “We’ve got the right mix of youth and experience,” Stone said. “The young guys have no fear, the new guys want to experience what we experienced last year and the older guys want to do it again.” Sunshine has made an impressive start to the season. The Crows had breathing space on top of the ladder on Saturday after a six-wicket win over East Keilor in a one-day game. It set the scene nicely for the Crows catch-up game with second-placed Point Cook on Sunday. “We’re going well, but it’s still early, so it’s anyone’s game,” Stone said. “We’ll sort of know where we’re at come Christmas.” One of the keys to Sunshine’s early season success has been young opening batsman Nikhil Pottabathini. “He’s a young Indian student that we sort of came across pre-season having a hit in the nets,” Stone said. “We signed him up before anyone else had a good look at him, so we got lucky there. “He’s a left handed opener who just plays to his strengths, he bowls left arm spin as well, he can keep, so he can do a bit of everything.” Asela Dasanayaka Aluthge has been on fire with the ball. He has become the “go to” bowler at the death for Sunshine. “He’s just very consistent and someone I can turn to in a tight situation and get the job done,” Stone said. “He’s very smart – he bowls slower balls, he’ll mix it up and he can take the ball away.”

Blues name new coach John Tate has been appointed Keilor’s coach for next year’s Northern Football League Women’s season. Tate takes over from the club’s inaugural women’s coach Emma Kerry, who has taken up a position as assistant coach for Carlton’s VFLW side. Keilor has had a successful introduction into women’s football, playing in the NFL division 1 grand final this year after claiming the Western Region and Essendon District Football League’s Women’s premiership in their first year. Tate said he was looking forward to next season. “I’ve been involved with Keilor as both a player and coach for a number of years,” he said. “I was keen to step up with Emma moving on and want to pass on some of my knowledge.” Tate most recently coached the Blues under-19 boys team. This will be his first women’s coaching role,

but he has been involved in Overnewton College’s school program. Many of those players at Overnewton are part of Keilor’s junior ranks. Tate, who is a personal trainer, said his job would help him in his new role. “Emma came in with a different background from me football-wise,” he said. “I’ll look to bring in some of the processes, I’ve learnt under Mick McGuane [Blues senior coach].” Tate said the Blues were likely to lose a few players from this year’s grand final side, with some looking to test their skills at VFL level. But he was confident they would maintain their core group of players. The club also has a strong junior program. The Blues are looking to field a second women’s side again next year.
