A buyer’s market Fresh produce and a bevy of arts and crafts will be a regular fixture on the picturesque banks of Lake Caroline. The Caroline Springs Rotary will be holding its first makers and farmers market from 9am-1pm on December 1. Rotary Caroline Springs market chair Ross Butterworth said the launch will be a day to remember. “A big day is planned for our launch with a number of local producers already signed up with fresh honey, freerange eggs, cheese, olives, fruits, quality meat growers,” Mr Butterworth said. “We’re encouraging everyone to come along and enjoy the fresh produce, or find an early Christmas gift. “The CFA will be on hand providing details of their operations and a range of food trucks will be offering their wares.” The Melton council has approved a permit for 60 stalls and Mr Butterworth said there’s room for everyone. “If the stall holders make it, bake it, grow or produce it, we are inviting them to attend,” he said. “Our Facebook page has lit up with interest, so we’re expecting a significant turnout.” The markets are on the first and third Saturday of each month in the north east corner of the reserve, near the corner of Garretty Road and The Esplanade. Shorten commits to west Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will make the west a personal priority should he become Australia’s next prime minister. Touring the St Albans Leisure Centre last week, Mr Shorten said he’s vested in seeing the west get its fair share. “If we form a federal government I’ll be your prime minister. I do know this area and I’m very committed to seeing the western suburbs in Melbourne get their fair share,” he said. “I’ll have an algebraic formula that’s Australia

plus the west. It just means that whenever we do anything national, I’ll always be interested to see what we’re doing for here.” Mr Shorten said his party has already developed policies for immediate impact. “We are going to have universal pre-school for three and four-year-olds. That will see resources here,” he said. “You’re a growing community with a lot of young families, we are going to properly fund schools. “For places like the St Albans North Primary School, that will literally mean for the next

three years alone, hundreds of thousands of dollars more, more teachers, more electives.” “We’re going to challenge the vested interests in this country and govern Australia for the interests of the people who don’t always have their voices heard.” Mr Shorten toured the leisure centre just one week after the state government rejected the Brimbank council’s application for a $3 million Better Pools grant. “If we win the election … we’ll be in a position to look pretty seriously at the propositions you’ve set,” he said.

“But we won’t leave this particular proposal [leisure centre re-development] to the election. In other words, we’ll give you a clear answer on what we can afford well in advance. “We won’t leave you guessing for long. I like the proposal. If this is what the community is telling me is a very important ask, then we will treat it with the importance you do. “It’s affordable, but not only that, it’s necessary. “I hope you take that as very favourable consideration. We’ll crunch the numbers, but I’m confident we can come to a happy landing.”

Council wins three PIA Awards Brimbank Council has received three awards at the 2018 Planning Institute of Australia’s Victorian Awards for Planning Excellence.

Plan Brimbank engaged with the community using a gamified online platform, resulting in record engagement numbers.

The first award is in the Public Engagement & Community Planning category and Council received the award for its Plan Brimbank engagement process.

The engagement was part of Council’s review of the Brimbank Planning Scheme, to help identify our community’s land use issues and development priorities.

The Plan Brimbank engagement process, conducted earlier this year, demonstrates how online and face-to-face engagement practices can complement each other and be used to strengthen the consultation approach.

Schools eye off Keilor Park site By Tate Papworth Two local schools have shown interest in taking over the former Keilor Park Primary School site. The Eliza Street site has been the centre of a heated community battle since Development Victoria announced plans to build 72 townhouses. Earlier this year member for Niddrie Ben Carroll stepped in and the plans were scrapped. Development Victoria is reviewing its proposal. The Keilor Park Community Group, which

was formed to oppose the development, maintains it would prefer the land be for public use. Mr Carroll last week confirmed he had held meetings with several local schools about the future use of the site. “I’ve met with Penleigh Grammar and St Christopher’s who have both ruled out interest,” Mr Carroll said. “St Bernard’s College have expressed interest for something I believe they’d use with St Columba’s.” Star Weekly has been told that representatives

from the two colleges will meet soon to discuss how they could work in partnership to best use the land. Mr Carroll said while the schools had expressed interest in taking over the site, a lot of boxes needed to be ticked before that happened.

Imaginations unleashed

“I’ve passed on the information that the schools are interested and I’m happy to facilitate appropriate meetings,” he said. “Obviously the school would need to find the appropriate funding and the area would need to be re-zoned again for education.” While he was clear nothing had been locked in, Mr Carroll said he was confident a resolution that satisfies the community would be reached. “I’ve been very clear that I don’t support the plan for 72 townhouses,” he said. “I’ll continue to fight for a better outcome for the site.”

Libs promise major sports club upgrade

Technology, art, design and food have collided into an exhibition to remember at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. Imagine, the Braybrook school’s annual exhibition, last week showcased the creative talents of students in an interactive setting. The college’s learning and visual arts head Jodi Pitruzzello said each year level was represented. “A lot of work goes into this exhibition” she said. “Some of the students work on a lot of these exhibits from the beginning of the year – it’s a showcase of the subjects we teach.” She said a highlight of the exhibition was the vast variety of pieces on show. “Some of the students study VET fashion, which prepares them for TAFE,” she said. “They produce a folio at the end of it and a finished garment, which are on display,” she said. “We’ve also got models on display, food exhibitions with things like biscuits, a visual communication design area with logo designs, sculpture and photography.” The exhibition was supported by other local schools. “We had four of our feeder primary schools participate in a competition,” Ms Pitruzzello said. “Their brief was to imagine a sustainable world and respond to that by producing works of art.” The increasing role of technology was another feature of the exhibition. “The inspiration in terms of IT exhibits was to relate to the world we live in,” Ms Pitruzzello said. “I guess we use technology as a tool to make art and we use it to display and present our artworks.”

The Keilor Sports Club could soon be set for a major upgrade. Liberal candidate for Niddrie Ben Reeson has pledged $300,000 to extend the existing building at Joe Brown Reserve should his party be elected this weekend. The funding will be used to construct a commercial kitchen and canteen, and reconstruct toilet facilities, including installation of disabled toilets. Mr Reeson said the move will accommodate the growing community. “Our local sporting clubs are a vital part of our community,” Mr Reeson said. “This funding will improve the facilities used by players and visitors alike, and will help the club to cater for an increased number of patrons, as well as supporting their members.” The upgrades will also give the reserve additional space for social activities for Keilor Sports Club, including Keilor Football Club, Keilor Cricket Club, and Keilor Life Activities Club. Keilor Sports Club president Hayden Kelly welcomed the news. “We have in excess of 1400 participants across football, cricket, and life activities,” Mr Kelly said. “Ben came out and viewed the Life Activities Club and agreed that the facility was in need of an upgrade, not just for our 1400 participants, but to also comply with current legislation. “The kitchen, toilets and other amenities are outdated and can’t cope, so this announcement is welcome news.”

Libs pledge intersection upgrade By Tate Papworth The notorious intersection at Sunshine Avenue and Melton Highway will be removed under a state Liberal government. Liberal candidate for Niddrie Ben Reeson toured the intersection last week and said the roundabout needed to go. “Whether I’m speaking to local residents or businesses they all tell me that traffic is getting worse and it’s impacting on their daily lives,” Mr Reeson said. “Removing the intersection at Sunshine

Avenue and Melton Highway will help residents get around our local area and ease the congestion crush. “You come off the highway and end up getting hit, nearly getting hit, or stuck in traffic for ages. “You don’t want to spend hours stuck in traffic when you leave work.” Mr Reeson said traffic volumes on Sunshine Avenue and Melton Highway have increased in recent years, substantially increasing the risk for motorists and pedestrians. He said removing the intersection would

also benefit business by allowing people to get between jobs more quickly. Opposition spokesman for Roads and Infrastructure David Hodgett also toured the site and said the public had made its voice heard. “Many of our intersections have seen little

change since the 1990s, so it’s time to upgrade them for 2018 and beyond,” Mr Hodgett said. “You come off the freeway and in a very short distance you come across a bottleneck. “This will be one of the intersections included in our policy. “We’ll dip lanes under so traffic will come off the freeway and continue to flow through this intersection without having to stop.” If elected, the LNP will invest between $4.1-$5.3 billion to remove 55 of Melbourne and Geelong’s most dangerous and congested intersections.

Brewing beer and jobs The owners of Keilor Park’s Fury and Son could soon be brewing up more jobs. Earlier this month the Andrews government announced it will invest $10 million in support for small-scale agribusinesses who produce craft food, beer and spirits, should it be re-elected. Under the scheme, grants of up to $200,000 will be available to producers who can show that the investment will help them increase operations and create new, local jobs. Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll toured the brewery last week to discuss the ways it could benefit from the funding scheme. “Fury and Son, a successful father and son business, is exactly the kind of small business we hope in the near future will be able to access international markets and create even more local jobs,” Mr Carroll said. “Victorian agribusinesses are the best in the country, we’re supporting them so they can

increase production and create local jobs.” Fury and Son managing director Andrew Georgiou said the company is proud of what it does and has built a reputation within the community. “At Fury and Son, we consider beer as a way that people connect, it’s a forum of showcasing what Australian produce is capable of and an expression of individuality,” Mr Georgiou said. “Brewing is, above all, about being proud of what we do, who we are and why we do it.” Nearly a third of Australian craft beer business are based in Victoria, with more than 130 craft beer businesses calling the state home. Police are appealing for help to identify a man following a petrol theft in Taylors Lakes last month. The driver filled a silver Ford Focus bearing stolen registration plates WZQ400 with fuel at a service station on the Melton Highway about 2.45pm on October 21, making no attempt to pay. He is described as Caucasian in appearance and aged between 20 and 25. He was wearing a black hoodie, white T-shirt, dark pants and white shoes. It is believed he had a female passenger with him at the time.

Business of being kids St Albans Primary celebrated student creativity and talent at the school’s ‘market day’ held earlier this month. Over 10 weeks, the school’s years 5 and 6 pupils completed the Kidpreneur Challenge, where they teamed up in groups to build their own micro-business. Pupils developed inventive products and services and created a full business plan and sales pitch before presenting their products at the market day in front of peers and the community. Year 6 pupil Laurent Singehbuye led an innovative group of students who constructed toy cars out of recyclable materials. “We wanted to create toy cars that younger children could play with if they perhaps

couldn’t afford to buy new ones from the shops,” Laurent said. “Once we had the right resources, we began to create the cars.” Sally created decorative flowers, made out of paper and said she enjoyed the experience of working with students she wouldn’t normally work with in a classroom setting. “Kidpreneur gave us the chance to partner with grade 5 and 6 students in other classes, which was an awesome experience,” Sally said. Detectives have arrested three people following an eight month investigation. A 42-year-old Sunshine West man and a 45-year-old man from New South Wales were arrested on Bourke Street last week in relation to a large-scale clandestine lab located at a residential property in Sunshine West. The pair has been charged with manufacturing large quantities of methylamphetamine.

Match made in heaven By Tate Papworth From the outset, Alex and Marie Ellard of Taylors Hill were an unlikely couple. She was a city girl, and an only child and still young when she lost her mother to tuberculosis. He was a country boy from the tiny Wimmera town of Rupanyup, the youngest of nine children. However they have proven to be a match made in heaven. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last week, reminiscing on many happy times. Just whom proposed remains the subject of debate. Marie says the couple were talking one day and Alex referred to something happening “after we get married”, prompting her to ask “When are we getting married?” Alex said finding a date also proved difficult. “I said ‘Are you free one Saturday in November?’ And she said a couple of dates, but I said I couldn’t because I was playing cricket on those days,” he joked. The couple met after Alex moved into a boarding house in Maribyrnong Road, Ascot Vale. They remained at the boarding house until they built a home in Essendon, where they remained for 43 years. It was there they raised their four children, before moving into a retirement village in Taylors Hill 13 years ago. Sixty years on, Marie explained she fell in love with Alex’s family, as much as the man himself. “I’ve never regretted it, never in 100 years, because I got him and a beautiful family,” Marie said. “That was the very reason I married him, for his family,” she said.

Double delight for Hume Drive Brimbank residents can rejoice as the opening of the Hume Drive expansion doubles the available lanes on the busy road. Work has finished on the $4.46 million project to duplicate Hume Drive between Calder Park Drive, Taylors Hill, and Copperfield Drive, Delahey. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council had contributed about $1 million to the expansion. In addition to the lane duplication the project included new traffic lights at the intersection of Hume Drive and Overton Lea Boulevard. “Brimbank council is delighted that this exciting project – which will make a real difference to the daily lives of nearby residents – has now been completed,” Cr Congreve said. “These works will improve traffic flow for neighbouring residents across Brimbank and Melton making it easier for them to get to work or just around the neighbourhood.” The project also included landscaping and upgrading existing roundabouts. Melton and Brimbank councils jointly funded the improvements as Hume Drive falls within both municipalities, with the municipal boundary at Overton Lea Boulevard. “This project is a wonderful example of two councils working together in the best interests of residents,” Cr Congreve said. Poverty crisis deepens

UV warning for outdoor staff

By Tate Papworth More than 34,000 Brimbank residents are living in poverty, according to a report released by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling and the Victorian Council of Social Service. The report, Every suburb Every town Poverty in Victoria, said the poverty rate in Brimbank was at 20 per cent. Women make up 57 per cent of the numbers, while 12 per cent were aged over 65. Uniting Vic.Tas, the community services organisation of the Uniting Church, said the crisis was expected to escalate.

In the 2017-18 financial year, Uniting Vic.Tas provided more than $50,000 of food to support 1200 families and individuals out of its centres in Sunshine and St Albans. Of these, 543 households approached Uniting for help for the first time, while 25 locals said they were homeless and sleeping rough. Uniting Sunshine emergency relief services co-ordinator Trudy Miller said a number of factors were contributing to the problem. “The cost of renting is going up. Wages have deteriorated and people are increasingly finding the only job they can get is casual and part-time,” she said. “The knock-on effect is that people simply can’t afford to buy food or pay their bills.” In response, Uniting Vic.Tas is urging more

Brimbank workers in high UV industries are at risk of skin cancer. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show 15,099 Brimbank residents work in the five industries that have the highest UV exposure, including agriculture, forestry and fishing, mining and electricity. SunSmart manager Heather Walker has said outdoor workers need to make sun protection a priority. “The more time you spend outdoors, the greater your risk of skin cancer, which is why people who work outdoors need to make sun protection a staple of their health and safety kit,” Ms Walker said. “Because we’re still getting those cool and cloudy spring days, people can get caught out. But it’s the sun’s UV … that damages your skin, causing sunburn, tanning and skin cancer. “Any unprotected skin will be damaged, so it’s crucial … to take action now.” Ms Walker said employers and safety managers need to treat UV as they would any other health or safety risk. “Providing a protective uniform may not be enough in terms of managing UV risk,” Ms Walker said. “People who work outdoors need year-round sun protection that includes clothing, a broad brimmed hat, sunscreen and eye protection, as well as control measures like shade and regular breaks.” Joanna Catalano

Ten year ban for animal cruelty By Tate Papworth

At the Sunshine Magistrates Court on August 1, 2018, Fouad KARIMI failed to appear on bail. A warrant was issued for his arrest for offences including making a false report to police. On October 16, 2018 a further warrant was issued for KARIMI when he failed to answer a summons for charges including stating a false name and breaching an alcohol interlock condition. Police are seeking information as to KARIMI’s current whereabouts.

There are currently six warrants of apprehension in existence for Matthew VAN RAVENSTEIN. Between May 21, 2018 and September 19, 2018 the warrants were issued for offences including failing to answer bail, dangerous driving whilst pursued by police, handling stolen goods, driving whilst disqualified and reckless conduct endangering serious injury. Police are seeking information as to VAN RAVENSTEIN’s current whereabouts.

A registered Greyhound Racing Victoria member has been convicted on animal cruelty charges. Frank Bahor was found guilty at the Sunshine Magistrates Court last month of all 16 charges laid against him, relating to the care of four greyhounds and two cats. RSPCA Victoria Inspector Sarah Gilbert executed a warrant to search Bahor’s property after welfare concerns were raised about four greyhounds in his care. She found the four dogs were severely underweight, swarming with live fleas, and suffered from skin conditions. Inspector Gilbert said the dogs were housed

in filthy conditions. Three cats were also located in the laundry at Bahor’s property. One cat was deceased and in an advanced state of decomposition. There was no food or water available for the live cats, who were severely underweight and living in filthy conditions. Bahor stated that he knew the dogs were underweight and carrying large amounts of fleas and admitted he did not seek veterinary treatment or clean their living environment. He did not appear in court and in his absence was found guilty of all charges. He was sentenced with conviction to pay a fine of $15,000, costs of $2971.20 and given a 10-year order banning him from being a person in charge of any animal.

Pair fined over dog charges Two women have been found guilty of animal cruelty charges at the Sunshine Magistrates Court. The court heard that a Brimbank council animal management officer and RSPCA Victoria Inspector Sarah Gilbert attended a property in March, believed to be occupied by Patricia and Shania Kirby, after receiving a report of concern for the welfare of two dogs. The dogs were found in an emaciated condition, without access to drinking water or shelter. At the time, neither of the Kirbys were residing at the property, and there were

no regular arrangements in place for the care of the dogs. The dogs were seized and taken to an RSPCA veterinary clinic for examination where it was found the degree of emaciation was caused by starvation over a period of several weeks. Shania Kirby was sentenced with conviction and fined $7500. Patricia Kirby was sentenced with conviction and fined $5000. They were each ordered to pay $311.40 in costs, and both were given a 10-year order banning them from being in charge of any animal.

Peace ethos takes root A lasting tribute to peace has been established at Kevin Wheelahan Gardens’ avenue of honour. The Sunshine RSL and the Sunshine Historical Society held a small ceremony at the gardens last week to officially unveil 11 fastigiate oak trees. Sunshine Historical Society president Alan Dash said the trees capped off the avenue’s recreation. “About three and a half years ago we decided to recreate the avenue of honour that H.V McKay created in 1917 because it had been lost,” he said. “We decided it was time to celebrate the end of hostilities in an appropriate way involving schoolchildren and the community.” The original plan involved one tree, but given the significance of the number 11 in the signing

of an armistice, Mr Dash said it was an obvious decision to increase the number. “These trees are resilient, striking and are something that will outlive us all if they’re cared for properly,” he said. “They’re something the community can be proud of.” Following the ceremony, schoolchildren, councillors and members of the RSL placed a wreath at a plaque next to the trees. Mr Dash said the trees were a fitting way to convey an important message. “When they grow, they’ll be a striking memorial to the importance of having peace, both in Australia and the world,” he said. Gender issues are on the map By Esther Lauaki Community engagement with gender equality and inequality is as easy as dropping a “pin”, thanks to a new interactive map launched in Melton. The interactive online Gender Equality Map lets users share experiences of gender equality and inequality where they live in real time. The map, launched last week, was developed by CrowdSpot and Monash University and is being piloted in Melton and Darebin. CrowdSpot director Anthony Aisenberg

said that the map would use user-generated data to form a picture of gender equality in Victoria and inform policy and urban design changes. “The map empowers people of all ages and gender identities to easily share their experiences and feelings about their local area by placing a pin on the map,” Mr Aisenberg said. “This community collaboration provides useful insights for decision makers to improve neighborhoods. “The results will be analysed by Monash University and CrowdSpot to help planners

and communities better understand where inequality occurs.” Map users drop a digital “pin” on locations where they have had positive or negative experiences of gender equality such as changeroom access, sexist advertising and pram accessibility.

Melton mayor Bob Turner is encouraging residents to embrace and use the Gender Equality Map pilot, which will run until late February. “The feedback we get from the Gender Equality Map will help us make informed decisions when planning for and upgrading public spaces and facilities,” he said. “It’s really important that people share their stories so we get a clearer picture of real life experiences in our community. Ciao to all things Italian The famed spirit and fun of an Italian carnivale was alive and well at Ardeer South Primary School last week. As part of its LOTE studies, each year the school celebrates Italian culture in a different way. The school’s Italian LOTE teacher Nellie Barbuto said this year’s carnivale theme was a day of pure joy. “All the children got involved in mask making and discussing the celebrations held in Italy,” Ms Barbuto said. “There was singing, dancing and lots of playing jokes on each other. “The great thing about the masks was that they were able to hide their faces and pretend to be anyone they wanted to be.” The culinary delights of Italy were also a highlight of the day. “We had a spaghetti eating competition which was a lot of fun, then in the afternoon

we had pizza and gelati for lunch,” Ms Barbuto said. “Later in the afternoon we followed it with Italian sports games and there was also a mini disco.” Ms Barbuto said the day is well loved by the entire school. “I’ve been a teacher here for 20 years and we’ve pretty much done this every year I’ve been here,” she said. “Each grade level was represented and the kids had a ball. “Every child comes away with prizes, lollies and a certificate for participating, so it’s a lot of fun.” Tate Papworth

Salvos call for hope The Salvos are asking Brimbank residents to give the gift of hope this holiday season. The Salvation Army is encouraging locals to connect with their community by participating in Christmas activities, lending a helping hand to someone in need, or reaching out to the Salvos for help. Brimbank Salvation Army officer Major Simon Damen says Christmas is one of the hardest times of the year for Australians doing it tough, but just a small contribution can make a big difference to give hope where it is needed most. “For just $29 you can provide food on the table and a present under the Christmas tree to help give hope to someone in need this Christmas,” Major Damen said.

Greening’s gold gong An initiative to green the west is bearing fruit. Greening the West, a project designed to deliver positive health and social outcomes for Melbourne’s west through urban greening initiatives, has taken out the President’s Award at the 2018 Planning Institute Awards. The award is given out for planning excellence for the initiative which best demonstrates leading practice, leadership and achievement in planning. Planning Institute of Australia president Laura Murray said Greening the West ticked all the boxes. “Melbourne’s western suburbs are some of the fastest growing in Australia,” she said. “There is a continued need and social responsibility as planners to ensure the suburbs we create are

MY BRIMBANK Paul Borg is a renowned artist. His school, the Paul Borg Art School has mentored a number of local artists over the years. He spoke with Tate Papworth about art, St Albans and his recent success as a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait prize. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I’ve lived in St Albans all my life. I also run my art school here in my studio and create most of my painting here too. What do you like best about the area? I’ve got so much family around here, but I also love the subject matter. I’ve always been interested in suburbia and the growing of new suburbia. That’s happening all around us. When I was a child it was all paddocks and now you look at it and it’s changed so much. It’s something that interests me, but it also frustrates me in a way to see all that beautiful open space disappear. What could be improved? I think we could do with more cafes. There’s only a couple around here, so when I have a friend over we always have to go for a bit of a drive. It would also be great to have more galleries, but this isn’t really an area where people go to galleries. Public transport is also a little lagging at times. Tell us about your recent success as a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait prize. I submitted a painting of my daughter. I’d re-worked it and now I’m really happy with it. I didn’t expect to make the final and I was a bit shocked when I found out. A lot of people have been commenting how it really reflects today. That’s what I want – I want people to associate my work with their own families.

Tell us about the painting. We are in an age of accessibility where information is endless and anonymous – a contrast to face-to-face communication. My daughter Eva, like her generation, conducts her conversations online. The hooded onesie

in this painting evokes the creepy experience of not knowing who or what we are talking to online. I placed her in Buddha’s pose to draw a relationship between the Apple logo and the tree of knowledge. I began this portrait four years ago and made Eva look older than she was. Now it is complete she looks the right age.

What’s next? I’m completing a six-metre long painting I started 20 years ago. I’m hoping to display it somewhere, but given its size I’m not sure where. I’ll also continue teaching. Over Christmas students have more time off so it’s a busy time.

Australian Ninja Warrior is being filmed in Spotswood and people are being invited to be part of the audience. Filming for next year’s third season is taking place on a supersized obstacle course erected next to Scienceworks. Channel Nine’s action-packed show is being filmed continuously with about 40 ninjas competing between 8.30pm and 2.30am. Fan favourites will return to compete alongside fresh faces. In 2019, the competitor who goes the furthest and fastest will receive a prize of $100,000, which jackpots to $300,000 if they climb Mount Midoriyama.

Audience members who want to stay for a whole session can apply for a Ninja Superfan ticket, with a 7pm arrival time. Family Ninja tickets are available for those with children aged 10 and above to arrive at 7pm and watch from 8.30-10.30pm. Lastly, there are Night Owl Ninja tickets with an arrival time of 9pm to watch until 2.30am. Audience tickets are free but availability is limited. Filming has started and goes until December 1. A dollar the difference A new campaign calls on Victorian voters to bring change to the homeless. Run by Aussie Dollar Drop, the campaign asks voters to donate one dollar, on one day to raise money for the estimated 22,773 homeless people in Victoria. The One Dollar, One Day campaign has been timed with the State Election for November 24. The campaign calls on the community to donate their loose change to a good cause while casting their vote. It is hoped it will raise millions of dollars to support the increasing number of people experiencing homelessness in Victoria. Campaign ambassador Hamish Blake said: “If everybody who votes puts a dollar in … it will go a massive way.”

It’s officially open – the Westgate Bridge – and what a field day sightseers and western suburbs commuters have been having. Now all we have to contend with is the traffic trouble in the West, which, according to MLA Neville Hudson will be a problem because the only studies conducted have been by eastern side councils.

Ardeer residents might get a reprieve. The Road Construction Authority has commissioned an in depth study of the western section of the metropolitan ring road, including a possible route to the west of Ardeer as an alternative to the present reserve along the SEC power lines through the middle of the suburb.

A $2.5 million church will be built by the Anglican parish of Keilor on a site, opposite the Keilor General Cemetery. The 1.514-hectare site, at the corner of Ely Court and Keilor Park Drive, was auctioned before a crowd of 30 bidders last Wednesday.

Brimbank Council candidates serious about being elected on Saturday attended a community forum on Tuesday night hosted by the Advocate. About half the candidates turned up, gave a two-minute speech about why they were standing and then faced questions from the community.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir says it’s a good bang for your buck at Batterbing Batterbing is in a Douglas Parade premises that has been home to fish and chips for a long, long time. Decades, I’m guessing. In any case, these days – under its newish name – it’s being run by John McMonagle, whose work we loved so much at Dough! in Newport. His Williamstown location is superior – it’s handily placed for more drop-in and foot traffic. And that’s great – it means more people can enjoy the super work being done by John and his team. The place remains very much an old-school fish and chip shop, with rudimentary dine-in facilities – a bench and stools inside, a few tables and chairs on the footpath outside. But none of that matters. Here be made – and happily consumed – what are, in our opinions and experience, the best fish and chips in the western suburbs. Matched, mind you, by Ebi in Essex Street, Footscray – very different style, equally fine outcome. The Batterbing art starts with chips. Here the potatoes are hand-cut and tumbled – and are wonderful. Real spuds make for hip chips. I go with my never-fail arrangement carried over from the Dough! days – now officially called Combo for 1 ($15, top photograph). Those chips, a handful of tender calamari rings and a nice chunk of juicy, delicious and

Crisp and deeply tanned deep-fried chicken thigh is joined in burger harmony by just the right amount of slaw and mayo in a purple bun. and Lisolajski said it was a frustrating season at times. “Like every other year it was a bit of a roller coaster,” he said. “We were doing well, then lost a crunch game a couple of months out and it fell apart a bit from there. “Defence is something we will work a lot on ahead of next season.” While he conceded it would be tough to cut players he has had a long association with, Lisolajski said he’s not afraid to make the tough calls to make the club stronger. “I’ve got no issue making decisions that need to be made … I make decisions for the club, not for my own profile or for anyone else, it’s all about making the club stronger because we are a big club and we deserve to be in the NPL.” Ewen McRae

Teen’s golden age of track By Tara Murray The hard work Frank Mazza has put in during the off season is starting to pay off. In his first two competitions of the track and field season, Mazza has claimed five gold medals. First, the 13-year-old competed in the School Sports Victoria Secondary Track and Field Championships in late October. Having missed out on qualifying for the event, through being away at another competition, he represented his school Brookside College in just one event, the aged 12-13 boys javelin. He claimed gold, throwing five metres further than second place. Two weeks later, Mazza competed at the 2018 Vic All Schools Track and Field Championships, again representing his school. He claimed gold in the under-14 javelin, long jump, triple jump and 90-metre hurdles. The Caroline Springs resident said he was unsure how he was going to go at both competitions. “The season had only just started,” he said. “It was really good fun. I was really happy and you could tell that all the hard work I had been doing had paid off.” The Vic All Schools Track and Field Championships represented the first time he had competed over the 90 metre hurdles. Despite this he was able to taste instant success. He won the long jump and also jumped a personal best in the triple jump. Mazza said he had been doing a lot of work in the off season. He trains with Sonja Kiernan and her crew at Proactive Athletic Coaching and Development, as well with Tim Golder at Keilor Athletics Club. “I’ve been trying to get my fitness up by doing laps of the oval,” he said. “I’m feeling more fit.” He said he would look to continue to build across all his events and look to improve on his long distance running in preparation for multi-event competitions. Next up is the 2018 Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Cairns next month, where he will compete in the javelin, triple jump, long jump and 90 metre hurdles. Having won three silvers at the same event 12 months ago, he has one aim this time round. “Hopefully I go better than last time and I’m aiming for gold.”Mazza is the November nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Mazza will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist him in achieving his sporting goals.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Like many, I think money has changed football forever and there is no going back, so it’s time for a reality check on the state of the game. The points system is the best thing local footy has done in years. Its double effect was to stop teams buying players from other competitions and killing flag aspirations and it encouraged playing current and former junior players. The effect the latter will have on club cultures and tradition in the future will be invaluable. The points system also heralded a salary cap – the greatest white elephant of all time – and it’s time to scrap it. Money is here to stay so let clubs pay players whatever they want. It is their business what they pay and if they can afford to pay Billy Bloggs $1500 a game, let them. He is still a five point player and that is more important than what money he pockets. You can’t run footy like a nanny state. Badly run clubs will still fall into financial trouble but at least the salary cap will be gone. ■ Plenty of movement in the November transfer window in local football. Albanvale has scored a major coup signing Nathan Black from Werribee Districts. I can see him having the same impact at Cobra-land as Brent Sheean had this year at Point Cook Centrals. Josh Mould is a handy pick-up for the Tigers from Wyndhamvale. Caroline Springs has lost a few good ones with Jason Degabriele, Rex Hickman, Daniel Backus and Justin Brook all heading to the Mallee Eagles. Liam Cavanagh departs Sunshine for Strathmore. ■ The Bulldogs past players end of year function also served as the AGM where the current committee was 100 per cent returned under president Ross Abbey. The group has thrived in recent times and the work of the committee and Bulldogs liaison manager Linda Murray is paying dividends. Jumper presentations to Gordon Casey, Kevin White, Alex Gardiner and Lindsay Gilbee last weekend highlighted the reach the group has these days over those who wore the red, white and blue in the past. Recently retired premiership player Clay Smith spoke at the lunch about his highs and lows at the kennel in a career cut short by knee injuries. Sad to note the passing last week of Eileen Sutton, known to all as Chubb, the widow of the great Bulldogs legend Charlie. What a wonderful woman. Condolences to the family.

Lisolajski has stepped up to the senior coach role after three years working with the juniors and reserves, and following a stint as senior coach at Keilor Wolves, where he earned them promotion. Taylors Lakes was left to rue another poor bowling performance as it fell short in its sub district clash with Moorabbin at the weekend. With the south-west First XI clubs facing off across Saturday and Sunday this round, the Lions’ trip across the city did not go to plan. It was set a huge total to chase, eventually falling 53 runs short on Sunday. With Moorabbin racking up 6-324 declared on Saturday, Taylors Lakes president Rob Arnold said the bowlers struggled to hit the right areas. “We’ve got a very young side, and they struggled big time,” Arnold said “Just being consistent and bowling six good balls an over was a struggle, one or two loose balls an over was all it took and they were put away. “We always thought we were a chance on day two, but someone needed to go big and unfortunately that didn’t happen.” On Saturday, the Lions’ bowlers continued to struggle, unable to contain the rampant

batsmen on their home deck. A 98-run opening partnership made life difficult for Taylors Lakes, and it wasn’t until 18-year-old Sam Clark was introduced into the attack that they got the first breakthrough as Romain Grenville was bowled for 67. Matt Stoupas (64) and Vishva Wijeratne (78) continued the pain for the Lions bowlers, putting on 101 for the second wicket before Nipun Sumanasinghe (2-62) was able to strike. With a strong platform, the lower order accelerated the scoring. Karl Carver (69) struck the fourth 50 of the afternoon, and despite the best efforts of Clark and Sumanasinghe the hosts were able to declare late in the day. Clark toiled hard in his 16 overs to finish with 4-66. The Lions then had to face five overs before stumps. The Westmeadows openers posted a 181-run opening stand, before Ethan McShanag (2-18) got the breakthrough. The middle order continued the run-making, bowled out late in the day for 298. Jayasinghe snared 4-53 from his 19 overs to be the standout with the ball.

By Ewen McRae A maiden century from captain Leigh Sheridan has guided Sunshine United to a strong position after day one of its clash with Keilor. The Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division rivals faced off in a crucial game in the context of both their seasons, and it was United who ended the day ahead – batting out their 80 overs to finish on 6-298 at stumps. Sheridan was the star of the day, coming in after the loss of in-form opener Neeten Chouhan and batting for more than four hours to finish on 117 not out. After a long career at the club, Sheridan said it meant a lot to finally raise his bat in the seniors. “It was a great feeling,” he said. “I’ve played senior cricket for a long time now, got close a few times with some 90s not out and ran out of time, so it means the world to me. “I’ve played for Sunshine United my whole life, almost 15 years of seniors, so to finally get one is a great feeling. The boys were rapt for me, and we’re a pretty tight unit so it was great to share that with them.” After winning the toss and batting first, United got off to a strong start as Chouhan and fellow opener Scott Dalrymple looked solid. The pair put on 38 before Chouhan was bowled by Shafraz Mohamed for 21, bringing Sheridan to the crease. United would make it through to tea for the loss of just the one wicket, as both Sheridan and Dalrymple played themselves in. Their 87-run stand set a strong platform for the rest of the order. Ehen Dalrymple’s patient 144 ball knock came to an end on 56, then the run rate started to climb. Ladd John made 19 off 20 balls. When he was trapped in front by Kaushal Lokuarachchi it brought Sangaran Nandhalal to the crease to turn the game firmly in United’s favour. Nandhalal hit 58 off 57 balls, and his 114-run partnership with his captain set the visitors on the path to a strong total. Sheridan raised his ton late in the day, and while Mohamed toiled hard for 32 overs to snare 3-89, the day belonged to the batsmen. However, Sheridan said the job was far from done, with a win this week crucial in the context of United’s season. “We’ve definitely got to bowl well,” he said. “They [Keilor] can definitely chase it down if we don’t bowl well, so the game is not won, but with 300 on the board we can go in with some confidence we can get the job done. “If we win we go 2-2 and Keilor are 0-4, and the difference of being 2-2 at this stage of the year is the difference between being up in the top four or fighting it out at the bottom. “ It’s a massive game for us.”

Elsewhere, Kristian Dixon continued his run of good form with an aggressive 98 for PEGS as they made 197 against Haig Fawkner. Dixon was in control from the start, just falling short of his ton, but dominating the scoring as his runs made up the bulk of the 128 on the board at his dismissal. Unfortunately for PEGS, most of the batting order struggled to make a start, with 55 from Samith Fernando the only other standout.
