Jenny Willis’ life was turned upside down when her then four-year-old son Daniel suffered a 24-minute seizure, leaving him with global brain damage. Daniel was diagnosed with epilepsy earlier in his life, however the seizure, when he was four, left him requiring around-the-clock care. He can have seizures that lock up his diaphragm and he can only breathe out. “That’s how he ended up with global brain damage. His diaphragm locked up for 24 minutes,” Ms Willis said. Daniel is now 23 thanks largely to the efforts of Ms Willis, but she remembers clearly the feeling of helplessness after Daniel’s seizure. With almost a quarter of a century of experience as a carer, she’s determined to offer more support for Brimbank families in a similar situation and is hopeful of setting up a carer’s hub. “I didn’t know where to go when this happened so to have someone to talk to about things and help find connections is really important. “I want to see other carers get the help I didn’t have when I started.” The Brimbank council has put together a feasibility study on the proposal. Pool plan takes a dive By Tate Papworth Brimbank council’s grand plans to redevelop the St Albans Leisure Centre have been dealt a blow. The council applied for the state government’s $3 million better pools grant earlier this year and requires $25 million from the state and federal governments to complete the project. However, mayor Margaret Giudice said the application for the better pools grant had been rejected. “Today I, along with Brimbank council CEO Helen Morrissey, met with Minister for
Sport John Eren, and Member for St Albans, Natalie Suleyman, to express our extreme disappointment our application for $3 million from Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Better Pools Fund was knocked back,” Cr Giudice said. “This funding was to help rebuild the tired but much-loved St Albans Leisure Centre with a vibrant, welcoming and innovative multi-generational health and wellbeing hub, which will make real improvements to the health of our community.” Despite the setback, Cr Giudice said the council will push ahead with its plans.
“Brimbank needs this new aquatic, health and wellbeing hub – not only because of the immeasurable benefits it will bring to people in the west, but because our community deserves facilities and assets of a standard so commonly funded and delivered elsewhere in the state,” Cr Giudice said. “We have put an enormous amount of work into developing this project. We have partners in place, project managers appointed and design concepts in motion and, most importantly, an incredible amount of community support, as evidenced by the success of our physical and online pledge walls.
“We remain absolutely determined to secure state and federal support to help council deliver this innovative Australia-first project for Brimbank, and we look forward to working closely with the state government over the coming months to ensure its success.” Cr Giudice said the council has been assured the project is still a priority project for the state government. St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman said the project has her support. “I’ll always back new sport facilities for our local community, and I’ll continue to back this great project,” Ms Suleyman said.

The rise of Keilor Downs By Tate Papworth A new Main Street and local roads are part of a major overhaul to better connect Keilor Downs with the community. Brimbank council’s ambitious vision for the Keilor Downs Activity Centre includes turning the existing through road, which connects Roberts Road to Copernicus Way, into a Main Street. It hopes to unlock potential development sites and create a vibrant pedestrian and cycling-friendly environment.
The council said developement of the area had until now been “ad hoc”. “Keilor Downs activity centre has much to offer – including shopping, leisure and community centres, a playground and skate park – yet many of these wonderful features are disconnected,” Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said. “Council’s vision is to improve connections … particularly for people who are on foot or cycling, to help create a popular and inviting neighbourhood activity centre with vibrant streets and public spaces.”
The council says the precinct has many elements that could help make it successful, but there are presently large tracts of under-utilised land and “nodes of activity that operate in isolation”. The draft Keilor Downs Urban Design Framework which will guide future development focuses heavily on the revitalisation of the centre, including improvements to the surrounding landscape and public spaces. The council plans to significantly upgrade the St Albans Leisure Centre, fronting Roberts
Road and is lobbying the state and federal government for a $25 million commitment to the $50 million plan. Cr Giudice said the draft plan for the activity centre would provide a complete picture for the area. “The framework calls for high-quality cycling and walking connections that will tie into the future Health and Wellbeing Hub on the St Albans Leisure Centre site,” she said. School’s letter of remembrance The artistic skills of students from Overnewton Anglican Community College will be showcased across the city on Remembrance Day. The school is one of eight taking part in the RSL Victoria-led #REMEMBER project. Each school was given a 1.2 metre high letter and asked to decorate it in an imaginative and creative way. The letters will come together to form the word ‘REMEMBER’ which will be displayed this month at several of Melbourne’s iconic locations, including the Shrine of
Remembrance and Government House. Overnewton decorated the letter B. “It has been a wonderfully creative experience for the students of Overnewton,” college head of art Rachel Embury said. “Remembrance Day is an important day to reflect on the many Australians who have served our country and to have our students participate in this poignant and colourful project is an opportunity for further storytelling and acknowledgement of Australia’s service men and women.” This year marks 100 years since the
Armistice that ended World War I was signed. RSL Victoria state president Rob Webster said the #REMEMBER project was a fitting commemoration. “The whole creative process in decorating their letter is a great catalyst for the children to talk about the significance of Remembrance Day and hopefully it is an opportunity for them to ask plenty of questions of their teachers and parents on why 11th November is an important part of Australian history,” Dr Webster said.

Residents at Kalyna Care in Delahey could soon have better facilities if the Labor government is re-elected. Member for Sydenham Natalie Hutchins last week announced that the aged care facility would received $800,000 to upgrade the 102-bed centre. Renovations will include refurbishing and modernising the living spaces and future planning for the growing needs of the centre. The centre is home to people of many backgrounds, including Ukranian, Polish, Slovakian, German, Austrian, Croatian and Serbian. It offers tailored care for different backgrounds, from traditional food to hosting dedicated spaces to practice religion and culture. Ms Hutchins said the commitment will ensure all cultures at the centre are catered for. “These upgrades will not only make sure residents have the best quality of care – but that they also have the dedicated spaces to share their cultures and traditions,” Ms Hutchins said. Member for Kororoit Marlene Kairouz echoed Ms Hutchins’ sentiments, adding that it was vital that Victoria’s diversity is recognised. “This investment will make a huge difference to the residents at Kalyna Care and their families. “Here in our multicultural state, it’s vital that we invest in aged care services that reflect our state’s diversity,” Ms Kairouz said.

All sweet for Sugar Gum By Tate Papworth A Hillside landmark is about to embark on a new era. The Sugar Gum Hotel will undergo a $7 million re-development, which management says will bolster its services and create employment opportunities for the community. Venue manager Claude Monaco said the re-development has been a long time coming. “We’re 25 years old – when this place was originally built it was probably more of a country hotel than a suburban hotel … it was basically all farmland around here,” Mr Monaco said.

“Since then, suburbs have grown and we’ve simply outgrown what we have.” A larger bistro, outdoor dining area and a new play area for children are among the slated upgrades. Mr Monaco said the play area will be one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. “One thing I’ve heard a lot over the years is that we need a bigger play area because the one we have is quite small,” he said. “This one is going to be massive and it’ll also be fully interactive. “There’ll be a theatre room, a massive talking tree and other things to keep kids entertained.” Mr Monaco said the expanded hotel will also generate job opportunities. “We should have over 10 new positions available once this re-development is complete,” he said. “We’ll have the capacity to

hire new chefs, gaming staff and bistro staff so we’ll go out into the local community and look to employ from within.” Work on the re-development will begin on November 14 but Mr Monaco expects the hotel to be trading heading into Christmas.

“There’s going to be a bit of a transition period … but it’ll be business as usual,” he said. “We might have one day of closure where we move things around a bit, but apart from that there’ll be no difference in our day-to-day functioning.”

Summer clean up reminder Summer is fast approaching and the Brimbank council is urging home owners to prepare for the season. The council will be conducting inspections this month to ensure grass is cut to a safe level and properties are kept in a tidy manner. Under Brimbank’s Local Law, owners of vacant land must keep grass, weeds and undergrowth at a height less than 150mm (15cm). Owners of vacant blocks that don’t meet the requirements will be issued with a notice to comply in early November, before follow-up inspections later in the month. Those who don’t comply after the second inspection will be issued with an $800 fine. The council may also arrange for the land to be cleared at the owner’s expense. The council’s free snake catching service will also return this summer. “We’re now well and truly into spring – the time of year when snakes usually become more active,” mayor Margaret Giudice said. “This no charge service gives residents peace of mind to know that if a snake does visit their home, we have a professional service available to remove and relocate the snake. “If you do see a snake, keep calm, walk away safely – taking any pets with you – and call us on 9249 4000. The Brimbank Bucks Rugby Union Club has cause for celebration. The new $1.4 million sports pavilion at the Arthur Beachley Reserve, Sunshine West opened last week. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the pavilion was a big win for the club. “The new pavilion provides a modern home for the rugby union club that will meet their needs going forward, as well as accommodate women, juniors and people of all abilities in the wider community,” she said. “The new facility includes accessible unisex changerooms and toilets, a social room, referee rooms, a meeting room, first aid room and storage areas. “This project is just one of a list of sporting facility upgrades and enhancement projects
worth a total of $12.18 million we’re delivering this year under Brimbank’s 2018-2019 Capital Works Budget – an unprecedented investment in the health and wellbeing of our community.” Construction of a $1.6 million new soccer pavilion at Ardeer Reserve and sports changeroom upgrades at Bon Thomas Reserve in Deer Park were recently completed by the council. Through the Pokies Play Brimbank campaign, the council is calling for the introduction of $1 maximum bets on all electronic gambling machines, reduced operating hours for venues with poker machines, a sinking cap on the number of poker machines in Brimbank and funding for more research to better understand the impact of harmful gambling. John and Jeanette Caldwell hold a special place in Victorian medical history. John gave his wife Jeanette a kidney 27 years ago, becoming the first non-related person to donate a kidney in Victoria. Jeanette said she developed kidney problems when the couple first met. “I was born with my condition, but it wasn’t picked up until I was 22 and by then all the damage was done,” she said. “I preserved my kidney life by 10 years on a special diet of no salt, no sodium and 30 grams of protein a day.” However, eventually her kidneys began to fail. “When my kidneys really started to fail, they decided to test family members. “My mum was a match, but she had scarlet fever when she was young and had scarring on her kidneys. They said that would’ve been like giving me bruised fruit, so we couldn’t do that. “One day after testing John looked at my medical card and noticed we were both B positive, which isn’t that common, so the next time we saw the kidney specialist we jokingly said should we test John … things went from there.” Although it started out as a joke, things rapidly got serious when doctors confirmed John was a viable match. Jeanette said the closeness of the match had the two asking some uncomfortable questions. “We actually had two antigens in the blood that match, which is highly unusual, so then we went down a road of wondering if we’re related, which was quite funny because no, we’re not,” she said. After vigorous physical and psychological testing, the operation was a success. Almost three decades on, Jeanette said

New school aims high By Esther Lauaki Enrolments have opened for Burnside’s newest school. Principal David Lombardi and assistant principal Kasey Simpson will be leading Burnside Primary School when it opens for next year’s first term. Mr Lombardi has come across from Footscray North Primary School, where he was principal for three years and assistant principal for six years before that. “What we want to do is have a holistic approach to education at Burnside Primary School,” he said.
Mr Lombardi said he would work with the local community, pupils and parents to create a school for the area that “embodies excellence and opportunity for learners”. The school received $5.6 million state funding in April to enable completion of the final stage of construction, including a performing arts and physical education building, basketball court, gym storeroom, music room, staff area, multipurpose room and canteen and student and staff amenities. Brimbank council is increasing its efforts to prevent violence against women. The council tabled a draft fairness, equality and respect strategy at its October meeting, which aims to promote gender equality, prevent family violence and all forms of violence against women. Mayor Margaret Giudice said the strategy aims to include the entire community. “Preventing violence is not just the work of police, the three tiers of government or a social service. Every single member of each and every community in Australia has a responsibility to promote gender equality, prevent family violence and violence against women,” Cr Giudice said. “We want to hear from community members about the vision and priority areas outlined in the draft strategy. “We also want to hear more about any strategies and initiatives you believe will help increase the safety of families and women in Brimbank.” The strategy will be continually evaluated to ensure best possible practices continue throughout its life cycle. “Once the strategy is adopted, following community and stakeholder feedback, we will continually evaluate our progress in this area and will develop an annual implementation plan to address priorities identified in the strategy,” Cr Giudice said. Experience goes a long way Margaret Giudice was a member of the Brimbank council that was sacked by the state government in 2009. She was re-elected to council in 2016 and was voted in as mayor in 2017. She reflects on her second stint in the top job with Tate Papworth.
I haven’t really had time to look back, but I think it’s been a wonderful year. The re-engagement with the community has been absolutely amazing. The last time I was on council I knew I had a lot of appointments and events to attend, but this time around it’s been more, and also much more diverse than it used to be. We’ve definitely grown as a municipality and the community have re-embraced the council really, really strongly. You’ve been a highly visible mayor. Was that by design? Yes. I think the mayor needs to be highly visible. A lot of invitations come through and I think if the mayor is invited, the mayor needs to go. For instance, we’ve had 102nd birthday parties people have wanted the mayor to attend, grand openings – all sorts of things – it’s important for the mayor to accept as many invitations as possible. It’s your second stint in the role of mayor. What was different this time around? The fact it was a new council and all of the
councillors were eager to learn and come on board with all the things happening in Brimbank, I think it has been much more of a positive. The previous council seemed to be much more settled in their ways.
I do. We’ve definitely engaged with the local politicians in the area. All of us are eager to find out what’s happening in the city. We actually held an MPs round table where all the MPs came along or sent a representative which I thought was a very positive outcome.
Were you a better mayor the second time?
What are the major things you want to see achieved during the remainder of this council term?
I wouldn’t say a better mayor. More experienced – more experienced with life. I had one grandchild when I was mayor previously, now I have eight, so it’s a different slant on my life. I’m a better mayor in the sense that I do things a little bit more down to earth than before. Being older helps. When you were voted in you said you felt like you had unfinished business. Did you tick those things off?
I want to see the St Albans Leisure Centre built. That’ll be one of my dreams. It’s extremely important, as is transport strategy and to get right the airport rail link. That’ll be a major thing for us to work with the airport and state government to see what we can deliver for this area because it will have major repercussions for this area. I mean that in a good way. It’ll be a game changer for Brimbank.
I think I did. In all of my year, going out into the community I didn’t hear one negative comment. I feel that I engaged with people really well and that people feel they can talk to me. I’ll answer my calls and emails. I’m there for them.
You’ve been mayor twice. Would you go for a third term?
Have you deemed this year a successful one for advocacy, particularly given it’s an election year?
Not sure. I’m not sure what’s happening in that area right now. There’ll be a lot of talking going on in the next few days.

Cr Bob Turner Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to say how proud and humbled I am to have been elected Mayor for the next 12 months, and to have the leadership of our great community entrusted to me, once again. I am committed to serving the people of our City to the best of my ability with pride, dedication and, integrity. Of course, leading a community as vibrant and dynamic as ours is a team effort and I couldn’t possibly do it alone. Therefore, I would like to acknowledge my fellow Councillors for their commitment to making the City of Melton the best it can be. In particular, I’d like to pass on my sincere thanks to outgoing Deputy Mayor, Cr Ken Hardy, for his support over the past year.
The 2018 Djerriwarrh Festival is almost here, and the jam-packed line-up of activities promises something for everyone. The festivities will kick off at 11am with the annual street parade along High Street. This year’s theme is ‘All That Glitters’. The huge live music line-up on the main stage will be headlined by The Superjesus, which is one of Australia’s most successful and respected rock bands. Other main attractions include the Djerriwarrh Festival bonfire, market stall village, Sustainability Lane, pet expo, an international food offering, Lion’s Club Carnival and an incredible fireworks display to cap off the day. The event will be held on Saturday 11 November, at Melton Recreation Reserve, between 11am and 11pm.

Cr Michelle Mendes Diggers Rest Preschool will undergo much-needed renovations thanks to a $350,000 grant from the State Government. Council will contribute $979,000 to the project, which will see an extension to the existing learning space, and create more three and four-year-old kindergarten places. This is a wonderful outcome for the Diggers Rest community. The State Government also recently announced a $400,000 Growing Suburbs Fund grant to redevelop Stan Payne Reserve. Hands-on course shows the way By Tate Papworth A Braybrook College student has taken a different path to university. Andreas Zakhari completed a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification in community services during his VCE years which launched his career in biomedicine. VET courses provide job-related accredited training and technical skills. Andreas said the hands-on experience gained from a VET course left him in little doubt as to the career he wanted to pursue.
“By experiencing the industry … I knew where I wanted to go with my career,” Andreas said. “VET gave me the opportunity to follow my passions. “I was fortunate to be placed at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre where I observed researchers and doctors doing incredible work.” Fellow Braybrook College student Judy Hang has also used the VET pathway to launch into her chosen career. “Growing up in an immigrant family and a culturally and linguistically diverse
community, I have always had an interest in working with people,” she said. “VET community services was an opportunity for me to undertake study in issues I was passionate about at school and receive a recognised qualification.” Andreas and Judy’s success story have been highlighted in a new resource from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). Titled Get Vet, the resourse aims to expand the horizons of VCE and VCAL students by introducing them to the opportunities available through VET.

College cements its place Catholic Regional College is celebrating 40 years of shaping young minds. The school was established in 1978 in response to a demand from Catholic families to have Catholic secondary education in the area – prior to this students had to travel to Sunshine or Braybrook. Catholic Regional College staff member Angela Robinson said the school has evolved significantly over the years. “The school’s expanded year by year and evolved to reflect the changing demographic of the local community,” she said. “When the school started it was predominately European and changed with the influx of Vietnamese migrants. “Each new wave of migration has added to the richness of the school culture.” To celebrate the milestone, the school held a family celebration. Past and present students were all invited

to share in an afternoon of celebration and reminiscing. “It was an opportunity for current and past staff and students to reconnect with the school and share memories,” Ms Robinson said. The school is established in the St Albans community and Ms Robinson expects little to change in the future. “Expansion in buildings and refurbishments has changed the physical appearance of the school and growth in IT, technology, communication, creative arts and science has transformed the curriculum, but the heart of the school remains the same,” she said. “Growth of the individual, trust in each other, interesting people coming from many countries around the world and coming together as a community of faith – showing respect for all.” Tate Papworth

Plans to develop land adjacent to the Keilor General Cemetery could sound the death knell for its vista of Brimbank Park, Keilor and St Albans, Brimbank residents claimed last week. Parks Victoria intends to auction the 1,514 hectare site, which has a permit for a service station or takeaway restaurant, at the corner of Keilor Park Drive and Ely Court, Keilor, on November 18.
Members of the St Albans Bowls Club are tired of asking: “Where’s our new green”? The club has lost thousands of dollars and more than 20 members since Brimbank council ripped up its all-weather bowling green in 2006. The green was removed early that year after the council decided to replace synthetic lawn with a year-round grass green at a cost of $120,000.

MY BRIMBANK Nic and Luke Anderson have created a thriving community at CrossFit Calder. Their work with the disadvantaged has inspired long-term member Christopher Farrell to bring their story to the small screen. They spoke with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank? Nic: I raised my family in Deer Park and Diggers Rest and Luke did the same from Taylors Hill. We also run a CrossFit box near Brimbank Park – CrossFit Calder. What do you like best about the area? Luke: There’s been a lot of growth and even just the diversity of people we get in here. We’ve got people from the age of 14 up to about 70 and that’s reflective of the area. There’s a lot of things going up and it’s an area where people really want to be. It’s close to the city, but still has that suburban feel to it. What could be done better? Luke: The under-utilised part of this area is Brimbank Park. I often grab a book and have a read in Brimbank Park because I think I’d be silly not to utilise such an amazing space. It’s an untapped resource – we have this amazing space, but it doesn’t seem to be getting used much. There’s so much space out there.

What sort of activities have you held? Nic: On school holidays we create programs for them. We go through technique and do a lot of partner workouts, so they have to work in teams. The social aspect is also an added benefit. It’s great to see them unify as a team, you can actually see leaders developing. Do you change the workouts up?
Tell us about your appearance on Channel Nine’s Destination Happiness.
Luke: We try to make it fun. So we incorporate a lot of music and get them doing some movements like box jumps. It’s as much about having fun and learning some new skills as it is the physical workout.
Christopher: There’s a really good story here. These boys have constantly been supporting Les Twentyman Foundation by bringing

Gilson College 30 Year Anniversary
This year Gilson College reached a milestone, on Saturday 20th October the College celebrated 30 years of providing Christian Education to the community. Gilson College began with fifty students in 1988 and has grown to more than 1200 students spanning over two campuses. The growth is a testament to the team of principals who began with a vision 30 years ago – Lyndon Chapman, Ron Hiscox, Peter Baskin, Chris Cowled and now Mark Vodell. Each of the past principals were present at this special occasion as well as past students and staff. The anniversary celebration was a day filled with stories and memories from past students and principals, musical items, creative expressions, drama presentations and a special uplifting message from the guest speaker, Dr. Daryl Murdoch, National Education Director. Attendees were able to walk through years of photos and memorabilia from when the College began to the present. Current College Principal, Mark Vodell shared his sentiments on the day “To hear the past principals speak gave many a person a sense of God’s leading in our history. Then to see and hear our students and ex-students share their talents was certainly an inspiring time for the present. I remain hopeful about our future and our capacity to have a positive impact on the lives of tomorrow’s students and their families if we acknowledge our Lord and let him direct our paths.” Congratulations to Gilson College on this auspicious occasion.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir road tests an old favourite For as long as I can remember, 123 Nicholson Street has been occupied by a chicken shop. Has it ever been anything else? In any case, these days it is something to behold. Time To Eat is run by husband-and-wife team Harera and Lageal Amea. He boasts Lebanese heritage; she, Indian background. Backgrounds of their staff members range through Lebanese, Nepalese and Fijiian. On my visits here I have noted an equally diverse customer base that mirrors many of the eateries in the area, including those of the three ostensibly Turkish kebab houses. The United Nations ain’t got nuthin’ on us! The Time To Eat salad display features the expected gloopy coleslaw and seafood extender offering (familiar from chicken shops everywhere) – but also tabouli and a Greek salad. Another cabinet boasts a handsome range of Lebanese-style pizzas and pies. I take a spicy potato and a lamb pie home with me; they’re excellent. At the front of the shop are Lebanese sweets. The chicken here come in varieties such as lemon and herb and tandoori. My half chook, tabouli and chips costs a top-notch $16 with a can of soft drink. In truth, there is only the faintest whiff of tandoori flavour about my chicken, but it’s still pretty good – as is the tabouli. I see my chips being doused with some sort

Then understand that all people with diabetes type II are in real danger of experiencing this awful prospect.
• Proliferative retinopathy is an advanced form of the disease and occurs when blood vessels in the retina disappear and are replaced by new fragile vessels that bleed easily resulting in a sudden loss of vision.
And it’s why it’s absolutely essential that firstly, you get checked for diabetes type II – it’s estimated that up to 500,000 Australians may unknowingly have this disease.
There are no early-stage symptoms of diabetic retinopathy and vision loss may not occur until the disease is advanced.
Secondly, if you already have diabetes type II, it’s essential to have regular eye checks. Diabetics are 25 times more likely than non-diabetics to develop retinopathy, causing loss of vision and blindness.
Late-stage diabetic retinopathy symptoms include blurred vision; eye strain; and headaches.
Unfortunately, only half of the people with diabetes have regular eye exams, and onethird have never been checked.
• Effective diabetes management – including better control of blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol. Good management will help delay the development of retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that damages blood vessels inside the retina at the back of the eye. Regular eye exams will reduce the risk of vision loss and blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy. There are three main types of diabetic retinopathy: • Non-proliferative retinopathy is an early form of the disease, where the retinal blood vessels leak fluid or bleed.
Strategies for preventing retinopathy include:

The main aim is to make a house look as spacious as possible, Distinct Sydney interior designer Batya Basson says. “How you show off that space with the placing of your furniture is the single most important thing. “Use your existing furniture – or take some out, or rent new furniture – to make the rooms look as big and as open as possible. Then create a homey, cosy feel with accessories, like plants, flowers, artwork and cushions.” Another vital element in making a home alluring is to ensure it is sparkling clean with a pleasant scent. Former coach Marcus Barclay is doing a lot of work behind the scenes, including trying to get former players to return to the club. Mangos said they had about 15 senior players at this point. “We’ll end up having enough for a side of 22 blokes,” he said. “I’d love to have 30 and I know people from other clubs that I’m trying to bring across. “It would be great to have two sides. Reserves will come down to numbers.” Mangos said he would focus on the club as a whole, with the juniors and women’s sides making massive inroads in the past few years. He plans to attend at least one training session of each side and will focus on the seniors, under-17s and under-19s working
together. The club is putting a lot of resources into the under-17s and under-19s, knowing they are the future of the club. Matt Wilson has been named the under-19 coach and development manager and will work closely with Mangos. Mangos said he’s not afraid to give the younger guys an opportunity and will look to have at least two under-19s in the side each week. “If these kids can play footy in high level under-19s, they’re good enough to play division 2 senior football.” Mangos said everyone in the club was headed in the same direction. Victory eludes Lions By Ewen McRae Taylors Lakes is still searching for its first win of the sub district cricket season, after going down to competition powerhouse Oakleigh on Saturday. After two losses against western rivals Hoppers Crossing and Werribee to start the year, the Lions first match-up with a southern side followed a similar script – they showed glimpses of their best form but ultimately fell short in a one-dayer. Lions’ captain Jarrod Wakeling said the margins between victory and defeat were slim. “Essentially what it comes down to … our bowling was not as consistent or as disciplined as the Oakleigh boys,” Wakeling said. “We saw the standard that we have to reach with our ground fielding, and unfortunately we lost consistent wickets so that’s what it all boils down to. “Their captain batted really well, but we did drop him early and good batsmen make you pay, so it could have been different if we’d held that one.” Taylors Lakes had earlier won the toss and sent the home side in to bat, and while James Campbell made a fast start the Lions were rewarded with the early wicket of Satvik Verma for a duck. Wakeling sent Campbell back to the sheds soon after, and at 2-34 it was a strong start to the day for the visitors. The club is seeking nominations for the vacancy now via its website. ■ Western Jets coach of the last six years Torin Baker has made a significant career move, heading to Hawthorn as a development coach from next season. Baker has impressed many in his time in the TAC cup competition after his own playing days from suburban footy as a Spotswood premiership player and VFL at Werribee under Alastair Clarkson in 2000. Baker’s knowledge of the under-18 competition and the type of players it is developing will be invaluable in his new role. The Jets job will be keenly sought and is an ideal starting point for coaches with higher aspirations. The bowlers have some work to do. ■ The November transfer window is open for local footy and there is already one big signing, with Brenton Quinn heading back to his junior club West Footscray as a playing assistant coach. Quinny is a great get for the Roosters and will be one of the driving forces for the club on and off the field. While it is great to see Josh Hill naming St Albans as his grassroots club when VFL duties allow, I would not expect to see the former Eagle and Bulldog too many times during the 2019 season.

Despite three losses to start the summer, Wakeling said he felt like his side would break through soon. “We’ve been competitive in all our games, but with a young side I think if we can start
to emulate some of these top sides we’ll start winning games,” he said. “We’re not quite at the standard that we want to be, but we’ve learned a lot from the first three games and I can see these young players starting to mature and learn very quick. “The talent is there, it’s just about improving.”

John Mangos will head Keilor Park’s return to the Essendon District Football League senior competition. The Devils didn’t field a seniors or reserves team last season and have put in a lot of work behind the scenes to get the program going again. Last week, they announced Mangos as senior coach. Mangos has long been involved in the EDFL, having previously coached at Moonee Valley, Maribyrnong Park and Pascoe Vale. He said he was excited by what is happening at Keilor Park. “My last few years I’ve got gigs in the EDFL,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to get a foot in the door and show what I’m worth. “I looked at Keilor Park a while ago and had a look at how much work I would need to put in. “I’m a person who builds sides and knows how to build sides from scratch. Middle order creates headache for Keilor bowlers Keilor and St Albans were both forced to chase leather on Saturday as the runs flowed in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. For Keilor, it ran head-on into a rampant Yarraville Club, with the reigning premiers flexing their muscle and riding the back of a pair of middle order centuries to finish on 5-364 at stumps. The day started well for Keilor, with Tawalampolage Darshanapriya getting an early wicket and the bowlers building pressure well, but a boundary-laden 53 from Konrad Kurta turned the game towards the Clubbers and their middle order capitalised.
Andrew Cullen and Justin Baker were the standouts for the day, with their 189-run partnership breaking the game open and making life difficult for the home side. Kaushal Lokuarachchi eventually trapped Cullen in front just after he reached triple figures, while Baker was run out for 122 late in the day, but the damage had been done. Lokuarachchi (2-114 off 26 overs) toiled hard all day, but the day belonged to the batsmen. St Albans did not fare much better in its clash with Seddon, with the decision to send the hosts in on their own deck backfiring. Like Keilor, St Albans was able to get an
early wicket when Billy Whitford bowled Arkii Van Wills, but it was the other opener Damith Priyadarshana who proved far harder to dislodge. He nearly batted through the day as he registered his highest score, with the tireless Simon Lambert eventually dismissing him on 186. Lambert bowled almost every over from one end on the day as he finished with 3-110 off 34 overs. Whitford (2-79) and Tom Langley-Dunn (2-53) also chipped in throughout the day, but Seddon got to stumps on 8-348 to set up a big chase this weekend.
United holds slim hope By Ewen McRae The strong early season form of Neeten Chouhan was the lone bright point for Sunshine United on Saturday as it ended the day precariously placed in its clash with Spotswood. The Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division rivals met for the first day of their two-day clash, and while Chouhan crafted his second 50 of the summer, it was the Spotswood bowlers who enjoyed the spoils as they dismissed the hosts for just 136 before making a sizeable dent in the target before stumps. United captain Leigh Sheridan said it was good to see Chouhan continue his strong form, but lamented his side’s inability to stay out there with him. “We just kept losing wickets at the wrong time and could never get a partnership going for long enough,” Sheridan said. “Neetan has been fantastic for us this year. He gave up the captaincy this year due to personal commitments, but it hasn’t affected his batting at all and we’ve really batted around him in the first few games.” Sunshine United won the toss and took first use of the pitch, but was soon on the back foot as Scott Dalrymple (5), Ladd John (8) and Sheridan (0) all fell cheaply to have the hosts reeling at 3-17. Dan Schuppan was doing the early damage for Spotswood as he collected all three wickets as well as keeping the run rate in check. Schuppan’s new ball partner Allan Wise was injured in his fourth over of the day, but the United batsmen were unable to make the most of his absence as Sangaran Nandhalal (4) also returned to the sheds at the hands of Gene Maurice (2-18). Chouhan looked solid at the other end as the wickets fell, and he built a stabalising partnership with Tom Duxson (14) before he became Maurice’s second victim. Adam Duxson made 13, and Roshan Anuruddha (10) got all his runs in boundaries, but neither was able to hang around long enough to help Chouhan. Chouhan’s 61 was the clear standout innings, while Schuppan bowled his heart out to finish with 5-31 off 18 overs. With a small total, early wickets were crucial for United and Roshan Anuruddha duly delivered as he dismissed Leigh Forbes (6) cheaply. That was as good as it got for the home side, with just one more wicket falling as Spotswood closed the day on 2-70. Ross Horkings (39 not out) looked strong with the willow and will be the key wicket when play resumes this week. Sheridan wasn’t ruling out the chance of a win this week, however slim the odds. “We need the wickets early, so we’ll need to be on from ball one,” he said.

In division one north, PEGS has claimed first innings points in its clash with Royal Park-Brunswick and will look to press home the advantage this weekend. After the bowlers rolled the visitors for just 124 earlier in the day, Kristian Dixon (66 not out) and Anthony Cristofaro (56 not out) made short work of the chase as they got to stumps on 2-141 off just 31 overs. Keilor Park had a nightmare finish to its match with St Francis De Sales, losing a late wicket after the visitors declared on 3-296. It will resume the chase this week on 1-3. Ewen McRae

Sunshine Kangaroos will field a stand-alone team in the under-18 Western Region Football League competition in 2019, with Hamish Andrew and Marc Mudford to take on the coaching reigns of the new side. Andrew is a current senior player at the club, while Mudford is a former player. The establishment of a stand-alone team has been a major priority of the club in recent times. Kealba Green Gully is well placed in its North West Metropolitan Cricket Association George Luscombe Shield match-up with Preston Druids, after the bowling group kept their hosts to a respectable total. Jaydan Moore continued his strong start to the season in collecting 3-53, while Roshan Laksiri was economical as well as aggressive in his 4-34 off 17 overs. The Cougars dismissed the Druids for 211. The visitors then made the most of five overs, batting late in the day, to close on 1-42.

Deer Park is back on the winners’ list in premier bowls, easily accounting for St Kilda to register its fourth win of the season. Skip Robert Doody lost his rink by just two shots, but strong wins across the remaining three rinks set up the 84 (16) - 53 (2) victory, and sees Deer Park in third place on the ladder. The win sets up a mouth-watering clash with second-placed Melbourne this weekend, with Essendon remaining the only unbeaten side in the competition. In division 2, Keilor could only manage to win a single rink in its match with Moonee Ponds, falling to a 95 (16) - 57 (2) loss. In a tightly bunched ladder, Keilor is now second last but just a game behind second after five rounds. In division 3, Sunshine VRI was taught a lesson by Newport as it fell to a massive loss. Sunshine VRI was comprehensively beaten in all four rinks as the visitors piled on the shots to walk away with a 122 (18) - 49 (0) win. The loss leaves Sunshine VRI anchored to the bottom of the ladder with just one win for the season.
