Sumo style for Ardeer Sumo wrestlers from across Victoria will soon be doing battle in an Ardeer dojo. Victorian Sumo Association secretary Alvin Vella said the bouts would showcase the Japanese martial art. “The goal is to attract as much talent as we possibly can,” he said. “We’ll be here every Saturday and Sunday throughout November.” The shows will be headlined by former national champion Joe Saunders. After some time away from the sport, Saunders said he was looking forward to competing again. “I started about 12 years ago when I was in Queensland and went on to represent Australia a bunch of times – won three Oceania titles and a couple of national titles,” he said. “I moved to Melbourne about two years ago and have been pretty inactive since. “But I realised I wasn’t ready to be old yet, so I reached out to these guys and can’t wait to get into it.” Saunders said he hoped to train future sumo stars. “We’ve got a range of different weight classes, so there’s lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight,” he said. “I’m not sure what to expect, but I’m hoping I can help coach the next crew up and make some good training partners.” The bouts will take place from noon-2pm at 614 Ballarat Road, Ardeer, on Saturdays and Sundays throughout November. Rubbish pick-up ‘at call’ Brimbank’s annual kerbside hard waste collection period has been scrapped in favour of an “at call” service. From mid-2019, residents will be able to request one free hard rubbish collection at any time, as opposed to waiting for the municipality-wide collection, which is normally around July. Residents will also be able to book additional

user pay hard waste collections at any time of the year. The council hopes the change will eliminate kerbside mess, scavenging and illegal dumping associated with the annual collection. Cr Sam David said the annual collection period was unsightly. “Let’s be honest, it’s an absolute mess, so this is a good move.” Cr Lucinda Congreve said the change was highly divisive.

“We surveyed the community on whether or not they wanted an on-call service or annual period and it was 50-50,” she said. “If two people hadn’t voted it could’ve gone either way. It’s divisive – people absolutely adore hard waste and some can’t stand it. “It’s key to note we’re not taking services away. Everyone will still have access to their one pick-up a year, it’ll just be at their leisure.” Mayor Margaret Giudice said the move will help the council deal with several issues

which arise from the annual collection period “including scavenging and associated illegal dumping – which comes at a significant cost to Brimbank”. “Brimbank residents will no longer have to wait for that designated week to come around once a year to get rid of their hard waste,” she said. Tunnel flagged for airport rail link By Tate Papworth A tunnel between Sunshine and the Melbourne CBD is likely to be included in the government’s plan to develop an airport rail link. Under the plan announced last week, additional tracks will be built between Sunshine and the CBD to run extra services, most likely through a new rail tunnel to be used by airport-bound trains and integrated with the airport rail link. The government has committed $5 billion towards the airport rail link via Sunshine, but

says more needs to be done. Premier Daniel Andrews has pledged $150 million towards a business case for the Western Rail Plan which would include a fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat and the full separation of regional and metro train services. The separation of regional and metro services has to occur before fast trains can be delivered, and the full plan is expected to take about a decade to complete. Mr Andrews said it was vital the project was done right. “This plan will deliver the transformation

that our state needs – electrification of rail lines out to the west, and fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat, returning country trains to country communities.” Construction on the project is slated to start by 2022. In September AirRail, a consortium

comprised of IFM Investors, Melbourne Airport, Metro Trains Australia and Southern Cross Station, unveiled its blueprint for the development of the rail link with the Victorian and Australian governments. It promised the fastest travel times, a premium around-the-clock service and enhanced access for regional Victorians under a $15 billion plan. Under the proposal, travel time from the airport to the city would take just 20 minutes and Sunshine station would be redeveloped as a super-hub.

Showtime for college crew’s art Student artistic creations are on show at Caroline Springs Gallery. The Encore exhibition showcases the talents of Lakeview Senior College’s year 12 students studying studio art, visual communications and media studies. College media studies teacher Naomi Olthof said there was something for everyone in the exhibition. “We’ve got photographs on show, paintings – one student even designed a house,” she said. “It really showcases the multiple talents of our

students. Because there’s a number of different subjects featured, there’s a lot of different pieces on show.” Ms Olthof said the exhibition was the largest the school had mounted. “It’s been so well supported – we’ve had more parents and students attend than ever before,” she said. “This is the major project for these subjects for the year, so it’s fantastic to see it so well supported.” Encore’s grand opening was held earlier this month, kicking things off with a bang.

“The opening was a really great night,” Ms Olthof said. “We had parents students, teachers … the mayor even attended and handed out some awards.” The exhibition will run until Friday, November 2. The Brimbank council is calling for a container deposit scheme to be introduced in Victoria. Cr Kim Thien Truong tabled a motion calling for the scheme at last week’s meeting, saying it would encourage recycling in the community. She said it would also help reduce the number of containers going to landfill. Container deposit schemes allow consumers to return eligible, empty beverage containers to their place of purchase and receive a refund for each container. The council will now write to the Victorian Minister for Energy Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio requesting the scheme be introduced. Cr Lucinda Congreve said it was a worthwhile concept. “What a terrific way to encourage people to recycle,” she said. “I remember doing something similar when I was a child and I think it makes a lot of sense.” Earlier this year the council unveiled a new waste, recycling and litter strategy. The strategy has a heavy focus on reducing the amount of waste going into landfill and emphasises the need to educate people on waste reduction. Plan for ‘At call’ hard waste collection Council is planning to introduce a convenient and flexible option for residents to dispose of hard waste when it suits them. The ‘At call’ hard waste collection service would replace the annual kerbside hard waste collection service from the middle of 2019.

Council listened to this feedback and conducted a review of its hard waste service model, and also looked at what neighbouring councils are doing in this space. The ‘At call’ model offers an improved service delivery – so residents would get what they already have, plus more! It also provides an opportunity to reduce the number of amenity issues associated with the annual kerbside collection, including scavenging and associated illegal dumping which comes at a significant cost to Brimbank.

Our residents have told us that they wanted an improved waste management service with a stronger focus on recycling services and programs.

The draft Strategy is developed in accordance with Municipal Heritage Strategies: A Guide for Councils, which is produced by Heritage Victoria.

It’s important to note that the introduction of the new service depends on the completion of a tender process and awarding a successful service provider for the ‘At call’ service.

Nightmare at Ravenhall By Adam Cooper, The Age One prison officer likened the hours of distressing noises coming from Rebecca’s cell to a horror movie. “Rebecca sounds like The Exorcist over the intercom as she continues to spit and scream,” the guard wrote, and at times other inmates at the women’s prison were given earplugs. Other times Rebecca refused to eat – she lost 50 kilograms in her first seven months in jail – and refused to wash, and her moods varied from anxiety, depression and anger through to paranoia and psychosis. But despite the difficulties Rebecca faced in jail because of her autism spectrum and pervasive developmental disorders, staff at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Ravenhall were largely unable to meet her needs because the prison didn’t have a formal system for caring for women in her situation. And Rebecca was there for 18 months. Investigating Rebecca’s incarceration, Deborah Glass found it “the saddest case I have investigated in my time as Ombudsman” in findings published last week. Jailing the mentally impaired woman for a year and a half because there was “nowhere for her to go” breached her human rights, the state’s Ombudsman found in a report urging more investment in accommodation and support for vulnerable people. Ms Glass said during Rebecca’s stay in prison across 2016 and 2017, the 39-year-old spent up to 23 hours a day in solitary confinement, even after she was found not guilty of criminal charges by way of mental impairment. Rebecca (not her real name) was arrested in 2016 at her parents’ home and charged with breaching an intervention order and resisting police. Without accommodation and given

her risk of reoffending, she was remanded in custody and bail was never an option. She was later found unfit to stand trial and then found not guilty by way of mental impairment. But because authorities could not find her suitable accommodation in the community, she was kept in jail under the guard of officers without the training to properly care for her, and her disability worsened. “She remained in prison simply because there was nowhere for her to go,” Ms Glass said. “While agencies mostly followed procedure,

and in some cases went beyond them in an attempt to provide support, the state failed Rebecca. Her long and damaging stay in prison was a breach of her human rights.” Under Victorian law, people must not be kept in prison unless there is no practicable alternative. In her findings, Ms Glass recommended the winner of November’s state election invest in secure treatment facilities other than prison for people found unfit to stand trial or not guilty by way of mental impairment.

Gloss gone from Sunshine library New member sign-ups at the Sunshine library have dropped by 20 per cent in the past 12 months. The library opened in July 2016, resulting in a spike in new members, loans and visits. However figures released by the council this month show patronage at the library has plateaued. A total of 6514 new members signed up in 2017-18, while loans dropped 5.3 per cent with 302,035 items taken out. Overall visits also fell 2.1 per cent to 469,281. Cr Lucinda Congreve said the drop in numbers was expected. “Our shiny new library isn’t a shiny new library any more, so a reduction in numbers was expected.” However usage of the relocated Keilor library, which was opened in April 2017, remains strong. The library has signed up 579 new members (a 50.7 per cent increase) and loans have jumped 33.8 per cent. The Deer Park library also had a surge in members, up 12.7 per cent, but visits (2 per cent) and loans (0.2 per cent) fell. With support for the municipality’s five libraries strong, the council is looking to implement the libraries after dark program. The additional operating hours are one measure the council is considering as a prevention strategy to problem gambling. Tate Papworth

Victoria Police have announced a $100,000 reward for information leading directly to the apprehension of fugitive Jonathan Dick. He is wanted in relation to the murder of his brother, David in Doncaster on February 3, 2017. Police would also like to speak to him as part of an investigation into an assault in Keilor in August. A test of endurance Students, parents and teachers from Catholic Regional College in North Keilor are getting into gear for the Great Victorian Bike Ride. The cohort has been training for the arduous ride for a number of weeks and Catholic Regional College transition co-ordinator Manny Gambin said the sense of excitement was building. “Now we’re getting close, everyone is excited,” he said. “The students are excited, but I think it’s the parents who are even more excited. I had one parent tell me that he’s enjoyed it so much that he’s now a regular rider.” It’s the first time the school has done the ride and Mr Gambin said it had been well

supported. Ten students, six parents and two staff members will embark on the ride, which Mr Gambin said will be a test of endurance. “The ride is broken into three components and we’re doing the smallest one, which is 202 kilometres,” he said. “We ride from Rutherglen to Benalla. “On top of that everyone has to camp. “The students train as a team every Thursday and on Sunday we train as a group. The Brimbank council will write to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), as well as state and federal ministers, to ask for the appointment of a dedicated officer to address its ongoing PFAS concerns in the affected areas. Last month the EPA issued a warning advising people to avoid using the water. However the precautionary warning for the Maribyrnong River has been lifted.

A largely unknown factory tucked away in Sunshine North is making a big impact across the state. If you’ve passed by an emergency service vehicle recently, there’s a good chance it came from Bell fire and rescue. Bell’s business development and industry engagement manager Peter Fowler said the company works with a variety of agencies. “We work very closely with agencies like the CFA, MFB, SES, Emergency Management Victoria, DELWP and we design and manufacture all the various types of vehicles for them to go out into the operating environment,” Mr Fowler said. “A major part of our business is also the building of vacuum jetting vehicles, which are designed and made here. They work on a lot of the road, rail and infrastructure projects.” The company also recently completed a series of new specialist police vehicles designed to respond to public order incidents, boosting police capacity to rapidly respond to hostile and violent crowds and riots. The four vehicles are designed to fit an entire crew of Public Order Response Team (PORT) officers – including all of their protective gear and crowd control equipment. They can carry up to eight officers and mean that a PORT crew can travel together, giving police the ability to respond to incidents faster and more effectively. Previously, PORT officers were required to travel in SUVs to jobs, with two officers in each car so they could fit in all their equipment. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the vehicles are a significant boost to police capabilities. “The Public Order Response Team has been given a major boost, with 40 new staff,

Pledge to unleash new dog parks By Tate Papworth Brimbank residents and their four-legged best friends may soon have a new place to enjoy the outdoors. Last week the state government pledged $5 million to build up to 15 new off-leash dog parks across Melbourne, including Brimbank. The government said, if re-elected, it will work with the Brimbank council to identify an under-utilised park or reserve suitable for an enclosed dog park.

Member for St Albans Natalie Suleyman said the park will add to the community. “Having an outside space to let our four legged-friends off their leash is so important in our growing community, that’s why a re-elected Labor government will build a brand new dog park in Brimbank,” Ms Suleyman said. Boroondara, Casey, Darebin, Hume, Kingston, Knox, Maroondah, Moonee Valley, Nillumbik, Stonnington and Wyndham have also been earmarked to receive new dog parks. the parks were further recognition of the role dogs play in our lives. “For so many locals, their dogs are like family members – that’s why Labor banned cruel puppy farming and gave renters the right to keep a pet,” Ms Kairouz said.

According to the state government more than one in three Victorians own a dog. It said that with more people choosing to live in apartments or units without a backyard, the dog parks will provide a place where people can get outdoors, socialise and exercise their pets. The state government’s rental reforms allow tenants the right to keep pets, provided they obtain the landlord’s written consent. The request can only be refused by order of VCAT. The reforms are set to commence by July 1, 2020.

Open and shut case A Deer Park cabinet maker who took his business from a small garage to a Maidstone factory has won a national award. Danny Lam, owner of Deluxe Interiors Oz, was awarded the Bizcover NEIS-Change Award at the 2018 NEIS Awards in Sydney earlier this month. The award was presented to Mr Lam for demonstrating the biggest life transformation as a result of the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS), an Australian government program that provides eligible unemployed people with training and assistance to become a self-employed business owner. Mr Lam completed NEIS training at Kangan Institute and has gone on to build a successful business. He said it was a huge honour to receive the award. “I certainly didn’t expect any of this, but winning was lovely recognition of the business I’ve built,” he said.

He said the training he received help him turn what was almost a hobby into a thriving business. “I enrolled in the course to get as much information as I could on how to get the business up and running. “It was more beneficial than I thought it would be and within a year I had enough money to move into a factory, buy machines and employ four people,” he said. Mr Lam said with the expanded business, he’s now able to offer more services. “We do joinery, vanity and cabinet making for the kitchen, laundry, bathroom … any room of the house,” he said. Make a meal of taxi fare By Tate Papworth A Cairnlea cabbie is about to become a star. Hi Lay will feature alongside celebrity chef Anna Gare in the new series Anna Gare’s Cab Fare. Each week Gare goes on a cab ride and as she gets to know her driver, collects recipes and stories about culture and inclusivity. Lay will appear in episode three of the series and introduces Gare to her Cambodian heritage through some of her favourite dishes – a roast eggplant recipe and a sweet and sour soup with a Cambodian-inspired green mango salad.

Grants boost for groups More than 140 local groups will share in Brimbank Community Grants totalling $560,000 for a diverse range of projects supporting youth, seniors, the arts, sports, festivals and more. Mayor Margaret Giudice said there had been significant interest in the scheme. “This year we received 186 applications and have been able to support more than 140 of these with $560,000 in community grants for programs, activities and events. “These are important organisations working with our young people, diverse cultural groups, residents, seniors and vulnerable members of our community to support, inspire and build community pride.” This year’s Community Grants Program has been expanded to also include funding for major festivals and events. The St Albans Lunar Festival, Keilor Gift, Sunshine Short Film Festival 2019 and the Sunshine Lantern Festival were all successful applicants. “We know that festivals are important to our community – they bring people together to celebrate all that we love about our proud Brimbank community,” Cr Giudice said. “This is the second year running that council has increased funding through this grants program and to increase the support offered to these vital community organisations and events.” Tate Papworth

MY BRIMBANK Taylors Lakes writer and actor Jean Bachoura lets his diverse background guide his creative work. Born in Damascus and raised between Syria and Lebanon, Bachoura’s work is reflective of a life lived between cultures. He spoke to Tate Papworth.

What’s your favourite thing about Brimbank? I live within seven minutes drive of a Chemist Warehouse, Hungry Jacks and Officeworks. So I have most of life’s necessities within arm’s reach. On a serious note, I think we have amazing access to several nature reserves and national parks. The clean air and quiet that can easily be sourced within Brimbank is not something to be taken for granted. I hope this aspect of Brimbank remains as our suburbs expand. What could be done to improve the area? There is ample opportunity to improve the walkability of our suburbs. Personally, I feel the worst aspect of suburban life is how heavily we rely on our cars to go anywhere. Driving is not a relaxing activity. The impact it has on our mental health cannot be underestimated, especially when driving long distances at high speeds. Brimbank could benefit from more experimental zoning laws. An example of this would be having a larger number of mixed commercial/community hubs with a wider variety of functions dispersed more evenly throughout the suburbs, rather than concentrated in one sprawling shopping centre. This approach could encourage residents to leave their car keys at home and walk, cycle or

engage with their community, You’ve had a unique upbringing, raised between Syria, Lebanon and Australia. How has this influenced your work? Being exposed to different cultures has allowed me to hone my sense of empathy. Empathy is the most important ability any artist can have. I’m currently working on a book reflecting both mine and my family’s experience of living between Syria and Australia. I feel the ideas explored can be universal regardless of your background. Tell us about your success with The Next Chapter award and Night Falls. My first writing award was the Deborah Cass Prize for Writing. It connected me to an amazing literary professional and mentor; Sophie Cunningham. Sophie’s guidance boosted my confidence as a writer, thus allowing me to apply for The Next Chapter initiative. Being one of the recipients of The Next Chapter is an amazing opportunity. For me, the most important aspect of the award is the immense industry advice and professional guidance provided. What’s next for you? What’s next for me is buckling down and working on my book. I hope to have the manuscript close to completion by the end of next year. Cr Bob Turner As my current term as Mayor draws to an end, it’s timely to reflect on some personal highlights from the past twelve months. It’s been a privilege to meet so many wonderful residents in my journey. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed taking part in vibrant celebrations with all; opening art exhibitions, welcoming hundreds of new residents to our community; preserving our heritage, flora and fauna for future generations, and acknowledging the achievements of our local sports men and women, volunteers and young people. I’ve had many opportunities to advocate on behalf of our community, am I’m especially proud of our Build Melton Hospital campaign. Over 17,000 residents have shown their support so far, and Council will continue to advocate for a local hospital until it becomes a reality.

We’ve undertaken a number of major infrastructure projects, including redeveloping Melton Town Centre, duplicating Hume Drive, extending Caroline Springs Leisure Centre, and turning-the-sod on new projects like Fraser Rise and Aintree Community Hubs; Hannah Watts Park, Bill Cahill Reserve, and Arnolds Creek Playspace. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me in the past year. I look forward to working with the next Mayor, my fellow Councillors, Council officers and the community, to create an even brighter future for our community. Cambridge Ward

Cr Kathy Majdlik It’s been an incredibly exciting few months in Cambridge ward, with new infrastructure projects receiving funding, and key community facilities getting underway or being completed. The Burnside Community Centre officially opened in early October. This multimillion dollar integrated facility features kindergarten, maternal and child health services, occasional care, new parent groups, playgroups, Early Childhood Intervention and family services, and is a fantastic asset for this community. Council also turned the sod on two outstanding community hubs in Fraser Rise and Aintree, which will feature Maternal and Child Health services, kindergarten and child care programs. Fraser Rise will also offer neighbourhood house services, sporting facilities and links to adjacent schools. Aintree will feature a library kiosk and

full-service kitchen, with links to Frontier Park sporting facilities and local schools. ach year, the college welcomes former students and staff to an alumni reunion evening, to be staged this year on Friday, November 9. For many students, it’s a chance to catch up with classmates and walk the halls together, according to principal Marco DiCesare. “Caroline Chisholm Catholic College has produced alumni that have gone on to many great things – from AFL players and doctors to celebrity chefs, pilots and lawyers – including former student Russell Kelly who was recently appointed to the Magistrates Court of Victoria,” Mr DiCesare says. “Returning to their former stomping ground is a treat for many and a chance to see the amazing transformation the college has made over the years.” Mr Kelly remembers well his days at the college. “I went to St John’s in Years 7-10, then Chisholm College in Years 11 and 12. I used to walk to the school, which was multicultural with Maltese, Vietnamese, Greek and Italian students, as well as Anglos,” he says. “It was a great school because it was a melting pot with a great bunch of kids who all got along. It was a good, hard-working school with no limitations on what could be achieved. I still have old school friends and we’re all proud to have gone to Chisholm College.

After opening their North West Metropolitan Cricket Association George Luscombe Shield premiership defence with an outright win in round one, the Cougars were on the charge towards a victory against Northern Lions when weather intervened. Chasing down the Lions’ total of 167, the Cougars were well placed at 2-104 in the 24th over when the rain came. “There was just a bit of a downpour at the wrong time, which just held on for long enough to make the pitch too wet to continue which was unfortunate,” said Cougars’ captain-coach Evan Long. “I thought we only needed another eight to ten overs, barring any disasters wickets-wise, to get the result. We were batting really well, I thought we were in complete control before the rain came. “It is what it is, but all the other games got a result so it’s a bit disappointing from that perspective. That outright in round one has come in handy straight away.” While the Lions shot out to a fast start, putting on 70 for the first wicket, the Cougars bowlers readjusted their bowling plans and were able to rip the heart out of the middle of the innings with a steady stream of wickets. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ We are all drawn to sport for a variety of reasons. Through time the reasons we stay involved change, but the passion is as real for an eight-year-old as it is for an 80-year-old. That is why sporting clubs are so important to the fibre of our local communities and why they should be helped financially and allowed to get on with what they do best, not bogged down in a sea of bureaucracy. I am sure this has been one of the reasons many people shy away from getting involved. Fortunately clubs do have hearty souls such as Igor and Eleanor Vivoda, of the Altona Vikings, who were rewarded for their tireless efforts with life membership last weekend. You would be hard-pressed to find a more deserving duo anywhere in local sport. As is usual with this calibre of person, each has performed many roles with the club over the years. Well done to both and to Altona for recognising them. ■ Albion Football Club is, contrary to popular belief, alive and well and heading into the 2019 season with a new coach and a plan to be competitive in division one. The club addressed the rumours regarding a request to be relegated to division two in 2019, stating it is committed and ready for the challenges of 2019. Some players have moved on, which happens every year, at every club. The Cats’ new coach Steve Lowerson will deal with that, with help from the committee and support personnel. Jono O’Brien, Todd Finco and James Thompson have signed with Springbank, where my old mate Steve Thom is newly appointed director of coaching. Good to see long-time Albion man Stephen Gibbs recently awarded life membership. He might lay claim to a special place in the WRFL with life membership at West Footscray as well. Deer Park stalwarts Balshaw and Setterfield have kept the scorers busy with bat and ball. Spotswood welcomed Dan Christian to its T20 side earlier this week when it clashed with Laverton. Vice president Wayne Miles said the club was looking forward to bouncing back after a poor loss in round one. “It’s always hard round one,” Miles said. “You never really know what to expect, and the wicket wasn’t the best early on, but the team batted alright in the second innings and I think we’ll have a good year and be pushing for finals at the end.” Keilor was comprehensively beaten by Doutta Stars in the season opener, collapsing with the

bat on the opening day before fighting hard on the second day to avoid an outright defeat. Miles said it was no secret that improved batting was a big focus for the First XI. “They knuckled down in that second innings, so they’ve shown that they can do it and with a young team that’s really important,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of bowlers at the club, but our batsmen need to step up and value their wicket a bit more. That probably goes for the whole club, all the way down the grades. “They can all bat, it’s more about decision-making and execution, which will always happen with younger players so we’re working hard to improve in that area so we can contest again at the end of the season.” With a young side taking the field this summer, Miles said it was exciting for the club

to give opportunities to some of its budding superstars. “It’s a young team, and we’ve got a young captain (Daniel Stavris) who has been around the club for a while and is doing all the right things,” Miles said. “Even our seconds are pretty young, but we’ve already been able to give a couple of 17-year-olds their first game in the ones, and I think we’ll rotate a few through the senior side. “It’s good to give them that experience against the big boys, and it’s a good standard of competition to expose them to.” Keilor is hopeful of welcoming West Indian all-rounder Roshon Primus to its side this week, with the Barbadian to add some experience to the line-up. Sports shorts NPL

The National Premier League Victoria will introduce a new competition structure for the 2020 season, with the current two tier NPL system changed to a three tier system, followed by the state leagues. From 2020, the top NPL grade will contain 14 sides, followed by two, 12 team grades. The second tier will be made up of the top six clubs from the previous year’s NPL2 east and west divisions, while the third tier competition will contain the bottom four from the current NPL2 east and west division, plus the top two from both state 1 east and west divisions. The changes follow a Football Federation Victoria review.

Deer Park has continued its unbeaten start to the Premier Bowls season, knocking off the previously unbeaten Lilydale to sit outright second on the ladder. After beating the reigning premiers from Altona last week, Deer Park showed why it will be hard to stop this season with a powerful display at home on Saturday, winning three of four rinks to take the points 86 (17) to 56 (1). They now sit just one point behind ladder-leaders Essendon.

Eagle on world stage By Ewen McRae Thomas Deng may be the latest player to pull on the famous Socceroos’ jersey, but for fans of the Western Eagles he will always be one of them. Deng, 21, made his debut for Australia in last week’s friendly against Kuwait, coming off the bench to help the Socceroos to a 4-0 win. For fans of the Albion-based Western Eagles, it marked the culmination of a journey that began when a 16-year-old Deng arrived at the club after immigrating from his South Sudan homeland. Mark Szpakolski was a junior team manager when Deng arrived at the Western Eagles, and he remembers a boy who stood out from the crowd with his willingness to learn and improve his game. “His attitude was A1, just a very professional attitude from a very young age,” Szpakolski said. “He was also a very hard working player, and you could see from a skill perspective he could

mix it with far more experienced players very early on and do things that others couldn’t. “He was playing in the reserves team pretty quickly, and then we had some injuries in the seniors and he was by far the standout choice to come up. So he was playing seniors when he was just 16, and just never lost his spot.” Stories of his prowess are still told around the club, with Deng leaving an indelible mark in his short time there. “I’ll never forget a goal he scored against Bell Park,” Szpakolski said. “It was 1-1 with just a couple of minutes left, and he’s taken the ball from the centre, beaten a couple of players and slotted it. His calmness over the ball stood out, and for a young kid he just had something different about him.” From State League 3, it soon became time for Deng to stretch his wings, and he found a new home at Green Gully in its NPL under 20 squad in 2014. From there he was noticed by Melbourne Victory talent scouts who signed him to a youth contract in 2015, and he made his A-League

debut later that year against cross-town rivals Melbourne City. Szpakolski said while he was a memorable talent, he didn’t expect Deng to reach the heights of the Socceroos so quickly. “Who would have known he would play for the Socceroos, but there was certainly something about him,” he said. “We’re very proud to say that he played juniors, reserves and seniors for our club, and all that hard work has really paid off for him. “I’ve been involved in the game for a long time, and seen some very talented kids not go on to play a senior game, but with Tommy you can tell he wants it and he’s going to fight for it.” While it’s been nearly five years since Deng left the Eagles, he hasn’t forgotten where his journey began. “He still comes back and spends time with our juniors when we ask him,” Szpakolski said. “He’s here at the drop of a hat and will do a session with us, or talk to the kids, so we’re so excited to be a part of his journey and watch him on the big stage.”

In division two action, Keilor fell short against Strathmore. Keilor won one of the four rinks, and was close in others, but eventually fell short 82 (16) - 69 (2). In division three, Sunshine VRI was outplayed by Broadmeadows as it lost its second game of the season. Sunshine VRI failed to win a rink on the day as the visitors took the points, 90 (18) - 56 (0).

Taylors Lakes’ First XI match against Werribee was washed out on Saturday and will now be played as a one-dayer this week, but the Lions Second XI got on the park and kept the Tigers to 9-166. Werribee won the toss and opted to bat first. It put on a 59-run opening stand before the day began to unravel. Kam Singh got the breakthrough when he removed Ben Hurn for 24, and the bowling partnership of Singh and Liam Wolf was soon causing havoc. Singh ended the day with five wickets, while Wolf claimed four after 64.3 overs. Sub District third and fourth XI games were cancelled at the weekend.
