Deer Park Football Club is standing on the verge of history. The Lions could become legends as the first non-amateur Victorian metropolitan local football team to achieve a remarkable six top-flight premierships in a row when they meet Hoppers Crossing in Saturday’s WRFL grand final. Last season, the Marc Bullen-coached Lions equalled EssendonTullamarine’s long-standing record of five consecutive flags in the Essendon District Football League from 1975 and 1979. Leisure centre cash call By Tate Papworth Brimbank council will seek $25 million in funding from the state and federal governments to redevelop the St Albans Leisure Centre. A business case for the re-development of the centre will soon be put forward. Brimbank council will fund 50 per cent of the $50 million plan, but requires government support. St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman said she supported the project, but stopped short of

endorsing the full funding requested by the council. She said Sport and Recreation Victoria had received an application from the council for $3 million for the leisure centre, but the remainder of the funding would have to be fully assessed. “St Albans Leisure Centre is a much-loved facility and I fully support the redevelopment of this centre,” she said. “The Andrews Labor government supports such proposals and the application is being considered on its merits as per the normal

process,” she said. Ms Suleyman earlier this year raised the issue in Parliament, saying she’d push to help make the proposal a reality. “I have had a number of meetings with Brimbank City Council in relation to the redevelopment of this much-loved facility, which is located next door to my electorate office,” she said. “I am no stranger to that facility – as a child, I have some fond memories of learning how to swim there.

Cairnlea asbestos fines for ‘cavalier’ pair Developers have been fined more than half a million dollars for dumping asbestos in Cairnlea following the demolition of a 159-year-old Carlton pub two years ago. Magistrate Richard Pithouse admonished the developers as he imposed fines of $120,000 each on Raman Shaqiri and Stefce Kutlesovski in the Sunshine Magistrates Court on Wednesday. He fined their company, 160 Leicester Pty Ltd, a further $300,000. It is alleged that in October, 2016, the Corkman Irish Pub, built in 1857 on the corner of Leicester and Pelham streets, was demolished

without planning or building permission. As well as leaving exposed asbestos amid the rubble on the Carlton site, the developers took bricks, mortar and other building waste – with asbestos in it – to a development site they owned in Cairnlea. They dumped the waste there, 350 metres from a primary school and a childcare centre and close to a group of townhouses their company had recently finished developing. Moving the waste from Carlton to Cairnlea occurred after the developers were warned by the EPA, which brought Wednesday’s charges

against the men, to secure the Carlton site. The charges against the men related both to dumping waste at Cairnlea and failure to properly secure the Carlton rubble. Tarpaulins placed over the Carlton rubble and waste were torn, had holes in them and were blowing in the wind. When warned about the tarpaulins, Shaqiri’s response was to “tape them back together”, an EPA prosecution summary said. The magistrate said he would have jailed the men if that option had been open to him. “In my view, you put the residents of those

areas at substantial risk,” Mr Pithouse said. “If jail were available, I would be imprisoning the accused in relation to these matters. However, I am constrained by the [Environment Protection] Act and I am limited to imposing financial penalties. “It is my view that both [directors] of this company have acted with complete disregard to the law for their own financial betterment, and that they have a cavalier disregard [for] the law.” – The Age

St Albans sale hits $2.5m By Ewen McRae A St Albans property has bucked the trend of falling real estate prices by setting a new residential sale record for the suburb. The house, at 73 Alfrieda Street, sold on September 10 for $2.52 million after an auction that lasted nearly an hour. Ray White St Albans sales executive Minh Tran said a strong figure was expected for the sale, but the final amount came as a shock. “The vendor was looking for $1.9 million, so they were shocked to get what they did, but

obviously very happy as well,” Mr Tran said. “In the last couple of years, we’ve auctioned 80 Alfrieda Street at $1.81 million, and 82 Alfrieda Street for $1.68 million, so even for the area that this property was selling in, this was a very strong result. “We hoped that we could get over $2 million for this property, but to sell it for $620,000 above the reserve was an amazing result.” There were 10 bidders on the day, with a mixture of investors, developers and families looking to buy the four-bedroom house on a corner block.

The winning bid was from an investment buyer. The sale set a new record for a single block in the suburb. “That’s the new benchmark for the suburb,” Mr Tran said. “St Albans is becoming a very attractive place for buyers now as it’s so close to everything like shops, the hospital, schools, the freeway. And it’s not far to the city, so it’s a great location. “Having said that, I don’t think we’ll see this record broken for a while – a block of this size on a corner block doesn’t come around very often.”

More than 3000 Brimbank residents have signed a petition calling for the urgent removal of three level crossings on the Ballarat rail line. The petition calls on the state government to fast track grade separations at Station and Robinsons roads, Deer Park, and Fitzgerald Road in Sunshine West. Mayor Margaret Giudice said removal of the “dangerous and congested” level crossings were long overdue. “We’ve already seen how the state government’s rail crossing removal program can benefit the community and we’d now like this program extended to see the removal of these three level crossings,” she said. “Boom gates are down for 30-40 minutes per hour during morning peak times, creating a traffic choke point. This includes periods of up to nine minutes where multiple trains are going through. “The roads are so heavily congested in peak periods, that drivers are becoming frustrated and can display erratic driving behaviour. This increases the risks for all road users.” The petition was delivered to St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman by Brimbank councillors last week. Ms Suleyman said she would raise the issue in Parliament. “The Andrews Labor government has a proven track record of removing level crossings in my electorate,” she said. “I have been working with locals, advocating strongly, and support the removal of the Fitzgerald Road level crossing.” Ms Suleyman previously raised the issue of the Sunshine West crossing in Parliament in March last year Tate Papworth

Net speed guesswork for most By Tate Papworth The majority of residents in Brimbank don’t understand how to pick the right broadband speed for their needs, according to NBN Co. Research commissioned by the company reveals that while 76 per cent of Australians know there are a range of speed tiers on offer when ordering an NBN plan, 66 per cent don’t know how to pick a plan based on their usage. NBN Victoria and Tasmania head Ebony Aitken said the confusion was understandable given how new the technology is.

“This is the first time in history people have a choice on speed,” she said. “With ADSL it was just whatever speed was available.” With so many household devices requiring internet, Ms Aitken said picking the right internet package was more important than ever. “On average, each home has 13 smart devices that require the internet,” she said. “We expect that to jump to 30 devices by 2030. “We tend to take for granted the number of devices we have in the home.” By the end of November, the NBN will be

A Hillside photographer has had her work acknowledged as some of the best in the country. Fresh off her success at the Victoria Professional Photography Awards, Jacinta Dal Ben has claimed four silver awards at the Australian Institute of Professional Photography’s National Professional Photography Awards. Dal Ben said she was thrilled with the recognition, given the standard of competition was so high. “There was over 445 entrants and over 1800 entries,” she said. “To be able to enter into the national awards you have to be at a certain level, which is normally two awards received at state level, so the standard is incredibly high.” Dal Ben entered three categories. “I entered three images I had in the state competition – a pet one and two newborn ones,” she said.

Search on for rail link expertise By Ewen McRae The state government has begun the search for businesses, investors and constructors to help deliver the long-awaited airport rail link and the expanded transport hub at Sunshine station. Premier Daniel Andrews and Transport Minister Jacinta Allen visited Sunshine Station last week to open the registration of interest process (ROI) – the beginning of market engagement for providers to help deliver the mammoth project.

Labor has pledged $5 billion towards the project if re-elected, with plans to begin construction in 2022. Ms Allen said the ROI would help government assess which organisations have the experience and capabilities to help bring the project to fruition and gauge the interest of private sector investors and operators. “The search is on to find the best providers to develop a world-class airport rail link – that won’t only connect the CBD and the airport, but deliver massive benefits to regional Victoria,” Ms Allen said.

The rail link will also form the north-western section of the Suburban Rail Loop, an underground rail network forming a circle around Melbourne’s suburbs. Brimbank deputy mayor Daniel Allen welcomed the funding commitment to Sunshine station and the rail link, while also pushing for greater transport options across all services for residents. “We know building the Melbourne Airport rail link, with a stop in Sunshine at a new Sunshine super hub, connecting regional and metro trains, will strengthen Brimbank and

the entire west of Melbourne,” Cr Allen said. “We have an important role to play in ensuring Brimbank is a connected city, which is critical for improving liveability for the community and driving economic development. “We’re working hard to deliver an integrated network that considers all transport modes to meet current and future growth in Brimbank and surrounding areas. “Brimbank council would welcome any opportunity to contribute to planning for future improvement to the public transport network as they relate to Brimbank.”

Monmia aces tests Monmia Primary School is celebrating high achievement in this year’s NAPLAN tests. The Keilor Downs school recently received its results, with grade 3 teacher Michelle Rinaldi saying the school was thrilled with its performance. “The school’s done well – the past five years we’ve seen our results really grow,” she said. “Our year 3 data, when compared to like schools, has exceeded expectations. We’re really pleased with the results.” The school’s strong performance was highlighted by grade 3 pupil Lily. Lily received a perfect score, across all assessment criteria, which included writing, reading, numeracy and language conventions. “Lily’s results showed that she is well above the expected level for her age,” Ms Rinaldi said. “She’s well above the national average in all curriculum areas. She’s exceeded what they’re assessing for essentially.”

Lily said her results came as a big surprise. “I thought I’d done well, but I was very surprised I got such high results,” she said. “I thought I did well in the writing category, but thought my maths wasn’t as high. “I didn’t really do lots of study before – I just went in and did the best I could.” Lily’s mum Kim said it was a proud moment for the family. “We knew Lily would do well, but we were incredibly proud to see her get the score she did,” Kim said. “She’s a very self-motivated girl, she’s always Googling things and writing reports at home – she actually teaches my husband and I a lot of the time.” Tate Papworth Monmia Primary School pupil Lily scored high in the NAPLAN tests. Deer Park woman charged

A 24-year-old Deer Park woman was one of two people charged last week following police raids on properties in Deer Park, and North Melbourne. Two search warrants were executed in the early hours of September 12, with police seizing almost $140,000 in cash, along with a range of drugs including dried cannabis, heroin, MDMA and ice. An unidentified powder was also seized. The Deer Park woman and a 46-year-old North Melbourne woman were charged with offences including trafficking a drug of dependence, possessing a drug of dependence and possessing proceeds of crime.

Oak honour for Keilor Small, prickly oak trees that grow along the ridges and valleys of the Gallipoli peninsula provided the backdrop to one of the bloodiest conflicts in Australian military history. The trees intrigued soldiers, several of whom collected acorns throughout the campaign to send back to Australia. Captain William Lempriere Winter-Cooke’s family planted the acorns at their family home in 1916, one was also planted at Geelong Grammar where Captain Winter-Cooke was schooled. Today, there are many offspring from these trees across Victoria, including a new addition at the Keilor cenotaph.

Keilor Historical Society president Susan Jennison said it was an honour to be selected as a recipient of one of the oaks. “How wonderful to look at this tree and think it’s come from Gallipoli 100 years ago,” she said. “These are traditionally found in schools and we really wanted to bring one into a community area. “We’re negotiating for a second one, which will be placed in Keilor Cemetery.” Ms Jennison said an official ceremony to welcome the oak will be held on November 12. Police are searchng for a man in relation to a theft and collision in Keilor and the CBD last month. A man is believed to have attended a service station on Cemetery Road, Keilor, in a maroon Toyota Camry sedan, displaying stolen registration plates 1CW-1GD, about 4am on August 20. He failed to pay for fuel and drove off towards the Calder Freeway. Police believe the same man was involved in a pursuit in another stolen vehicle in the CBD on August 30 that ended with the man fleeing near Royal Parade, Carlton, after colliding with a bus.

There are currently four warrants of arrest for Trevor DIX. On September 5, 2017 DIX failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court to answer charges including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, criminal damage, robbery and driving whilst disqualified. A charge and warrant to arrest was later issued for the offence of failing to answer bail. Police are seeking information as to DIX’s current whereabouts. At the Sunshine Magistrates Court on May 10, 2018 a warrant was issued for the arrest of Jamie HARVEY. The warrant was issued when he failed to appear on bail to answer charges including handling stolen goods, unlicensed driving and possession of a drug of dependence. A further two warrants to arrest are in existence for offences including burglary, theft and contravening a community corrections order. Burglary prison appeal rejected By Ewen McRae

Three men inside escaped out windows, but a fourth man, Michael Sleiman, was attacked in a rear bedroom. He suffered multiple blows from various weapons. Power was sentenced to more than 15 years prison in September, 2016, for the manslaughter of Mr Sleiman. Fisher argued his sentence on the aggravated burglary and assault charges was manifestly excessive given his “limited role” in the burglary itself as well as his level of remorse in the four years since the offences took place. He also argued that the three trials he faced for manslaughter constituted an “exceptional circumstance”, and that while both on bail and in custody, he had made major efforts towards rehabilitation. But judges Simon Whelan, David Beach and Stephen Kaye said the sentence matched the crime and dismissed Fisher’s appeal. “Given the nature of the offending as we have described it, in our view the sentence imposed was a moderate one, and was certainly not outside the range of sentencing options open to the sentencing judge,” they said. “This was a very serious aggravated burglary. It was undertaken by a large group of men armed with weapons, was premeditated and planned (and) was motivated by an intention to confront, to intimidate and to injure. “Conduct of this kind is intolerable and strikes at the foundations of a law-abiding civil society. It demands a stern response.”

A man who helped organise an aggravated burglary that led to the death of a Deer Park man on Australia Day, 2014, has had his appeal against the severity of his prison sentence dismissed in the Supreme Court. Jamie Fisher was sentenced in March, 2017, to six years and three months in jail after pleading guilty to aggravated burglary and five assault charges arising from the incident. He was acquitted of a charge of manslaughter in February, 2017, over the same incident, following three separate trials. The court heard Fisher was one of two men who organised a break-in by himself and 12 others at a Billingham Road property at which an Australia Day barbecue was being held. Fisher had cut short a fishing trip with his friend, Adam Power, after hearing that Power’s cousin had been hospitalised after an altercation on January 25 with a resident from the Billingham Road address. The court heard Fisher and Power spent the drive home arranging for friends to meet them at Billingham Road for a “run through” at 10pm on January 26. Most were carrying weapons, including axes, machetes, baseball bats, knives and chains. Fisher carried a wooden bat. The court was told a woman who was on the front porch of the house was bashed, while one of the group smashed through the front door with an axe. Once inside, the group went on a “terrifying rampage”.

The Green Gully Soccer Club’s junior tournament drew teams from across the state, with 64 teams, 750 players and 2000 spectators lighting up the day last week. Green Gully president Dennis Venes said the day was a resounding success. “We felt like this was something that was needed in the western suburbs … it was a brilliant success,” Mr Venes said. “We actually had to cap the numbers because there was so much interest. We also had some of our juniors referee the younger kids to give them an insight into that side of the game.” Under-7 through to under-11 teams from all over Melbourne, as well as some from as far afield as Swan Hill and Bendigo, joined in the day’s games, which featured a round-robin, knock-out games and a champion team for each age group. Mr Venes said the cup would become an annual event. “This is what football is all about,” he said. “The feedback we have received on the day and since then has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s very heartening for us, and we’re already looking at next year and how we can make it bigger and better. “It was a long day for all involved, but the kids all enjoyed themselves, which is the main thing. The kids were the winners on the day.”

A self-confessed shy child, Haar said he had always liked making people laugh and had used that passion to great effect in his years in the acting game. “I realised, while seeing the actors and actresses on the big screen, that entertaining everyone was something I would love to do, to be funny to a larger audience,” Haar said. “So after some luck getting extra work I was able to find being advertised in the paper, things snowballed. “I found more extra work … and I then secured my first ever major supporting role, in Warrior, directed by (Sydenham filmmaker) Warrior Steve Ravic.” Citing legendary director/actor Lloyd Kaufman, Sylvester Stallone and Keifer Sutherland among his main inspirations, Haar has crafted out a solid career in the independent film industry, including an upcoming role in feature slasher film The Dark Net and an associate producer credit for American short film Curse of the Madame Wolf Wolf. He has appeared on screen and on the red carpet at the legendary Cannes Film Festival, most recently in 2016 when promoting local comedy Diary of a Fatman. “It’s very prestigious – I was so honored to be there to promote both my country and the projects I was involved in,” Haar said. “I had the time of my life representing Australia and Majestic Film.

VU Secondary College in poll funding pledge Victoria University Secondary College is set for a $23.9 million funding lift if the Andrews government is re-elected. The government last week announced that it would build the first stage of the school’s masterplan. The money will go towards the construction of the science, tech, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) building, the learning village building and the performing arts and food building. St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman said the funding would deliver first-class facilities. “Families in the western suburbs deserve access to great local secondary school facilities and that is exactly what we will deliver,” Ms Suleyman said. The state government has already funded the Victoria University Secondary College masterplan. The announcement comes weeks after the government confirmed it had no plans to provide further funding for Sunshine College’s upgrades. Plans to significantly upgrade the school’s facilities hit a major hurdle after asbestos was found at the site. As a result, a significant portion of the allocated $28 million will be spent on clean-up, rather than on the proposed buildings. Tate Papworth

Scouts on farm duty A group of Scouts from St Albans have been busy doing their bit to help drought-stricken farmers across Australia. The Tran Hung Dao Scout Group raised nearly $2700 through a Bunnings barbecue and other fundraising efforts, with group leader Chris Nguyen saying the group members had been enthusiastic. “We get a couple of these fundraising barbecues at Bunnings every year, and while we always need the money, with the drought-affected farmers we thought it would be a good way to do our bit,” Mr Nguyen said. “It was also about raising some awareness in our

Scouts and the community that food doesn’t just come from the supermarket – we need our farmers and need people to think more about where food comes from. “Usually we only get $1000 of profit from these barbecues, but we got some more donations to help us at the start of the day, and some of the Scouts went around Bunnings with tins, so we ended up with $2649. “It might just be a small amount in the grand scheme, but it’s important for the kids to know about these things and be a part of helping out.” Ewen McRae

Sunvale Community Park is officially open. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice opened the park on Saturday with St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman. “Sunvale Community Park is a landmark achievement for council and the community,” Cr Giudice said. “It has opened following years of work to create a shared open space on the site of the former Sunvale Primary School. “This new park is the result of many years of community campaigning … look at what we have achieved together – a beautiful green environment for us to come together and celebrate. “I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make this vision a reality.” The park, located at Neil Street, Sunshine, includes a skate park, play spaces, a large green space, a stormwater treatment system with underground water storage for irrigation and barbecue facilities. It also has an edible garden, a large shelter area, toilets and artworks created by local indigenous artists. The $3.65 million project was funded by Brimbank council ($800,000), the Victorian government ($2.6 million) and Melbourne Water ($150,000). The Victorian government supported the development of the skate park by providing $100,000 through Sports and Recreation Victoria. Sunvale Park is the 100th park project delivered across Brimbank under the council’s Creating Better Parks Policy and Plan. Locals gathered for the opening of the Sunvale Community Park. The condition of a number of houses in the 300 house former Housing Commission estate in Sunshine West is causing concern to local authorities in Sunshine. Houses in the estate have been under a cloud about the quality of construction since the roofs were blown off about twenty houses four years ago.

Sunshine residents can expect rate rises of more than 50 per cent because of rising property values in Sunshine. Councillors at last week’s Sunshine council meeting said residents of Maidstone can expect to pay 52 per cent more in rates this year. Other parts of Sunshine will face rises of between 20 and 30 per cent.

Brimbank council has enacted its municipal emergency management plan for the first time, to co-ordinate its response to the state-wide gas crisis. The plan was put into action at 10 am on Sunday when senior council officers and Department of Human Services representatives met to discuss relief efforts.

A group of Brimbank men will be devastated if a program that has helped change their lives is axed. Government funding for the Men’s Shed program ends in June next year and the service will not continue without a further financial lifeline. West Sunshine resident John Cranston said the program, based at Sunshine’s Uniting Church, had helped him cope with life after he found himself unemployed.

The open spaces, the beautiful Kororoit Creek and remaining natural grasslands, and the diversity and generosity of the people. What could make the area better? More trees. Less litter and rubbish dumping, and more trees. Lots more trees. Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in Brimbank? Hands down, Perth Avenue, Albion. Sadie Black is a foodie delight, awesome coffee. Vinh Nguyen Bakehouse does incredible vegan and vegetarian dishes; there are delicious donuts and polish delights from Mitko Deli, not to mention one of the few old-skool milkbars left in Melbourne. Tell us about the Toy Library, how did it all start up? When we moved to Brimbank, I really missed walking with my two year-old to our local toy library each week to swap her toys and have a play. I am an avid op-shopper so I started collecting toys with the aim of starting a toy library here. With a bit of initial newspaper publicity and good old social media, I collected some interested people and we formed the founding committee. The thing that really helped was that when we asked Albion Primary

School for some space they said ‘yes’. We wouldn’t be here without that. What’s the best thing about the past two years at the Toy Library? Seeing the organisation achieve its purpose, to develop the sense of community in the area and provide a safe place to play and connect. I’ve made some fantastic friends here and I know many others have too. I love to see kids walk in and … head straight for the toys. You’re in the middle of a month of activities for dads, why did you feel it was important to do that and how have the events gone? We want to support local families to be healthy, functional and resilient. Parenting is a tough gig and we know that it can be hard for dads to develop the support networks that sometimes are easier for mums. We wanted to make sure dads feel welcome at the toy library and it’s a place they want to come and spend some time with their children and hopefully connect with other dads and families. Our breakfast was not as well-attended as we’d hoped but next year we’ll start it earlier so that working dads can still pop in. We’re expecting our pizza and “beer” night to be better attended. We hope to celebrate Dad’s Month every year, but it will of course depend on our venue. What would people be surprised to know about you? I run the Albion Toy Library as a volunteer but my paid employment is as manager of the Melbourne Community Toy Library supported by the City of Melbourne.

Window is open for that first home The task of buying a first home is still monumental – but a window of opportunity has cracked open as prices soften and market dynamics shift, according to UBS economist Carlos Cacho.

“For first-home buyers who have got their finances in order and have strong credit, it’s certainly a good opportunity,” Mr Cacho says. “But I’d say it’s probably going to get better.” Melbourne house prices have dropped 1.8 per cent to July 31 but still managed a thin annual gain – expected to turn negative soon – while units posted a fall in the quarter. So, first-home buyers may find some wind in their sails but buying in a falling market presents its own challenges. “If you overpaid 24 or 36 months ago it wasn’t too much of a problem, because within a couple of months, you’d already made that capital back in appreciation,” the economist says. “If you overpay now it could be years before you retrieve that extra payment.” The best approach for first-time buyers keen to wade into one of the most-talked about property markets in the world is to keep an eye out for areas of distress in the market, which should be presenting themselves soon.

“There are going to be good opportunities that come up,” Mr Cacho says. “And that may be a seller who has an interest-only mortgage and is switching to principal and interest and can’t afford the repayments and so has to sell by a certain date. “A case like that could provide an opportunity [for first-home buyers].” Data shows first-home buyers are bolstering their position in the market, in particular filling a hole left by falling demand from foreign buyers. “First-home buyer demand continues to offset a reduction in demand from owner-occupiers and foreign buyers, with state government incentives and moderating prices also likely playing a role in helping first-home buyers move onto the property ladder,” NAB chief economist Alan Oster says. So, with market dynamics finally giving first-home buyers something to work with, the question is when should they make the move? Most economists, UBS included, expect capital city prices to weaken further before hitting bottom.

The club has come back from the brink, to now be headed to division two in 2019. The mistakes of the past should be the guiding light into a new era for the club, which has gone through a metamorphosis in the past two years. The truth is, the workload will increase on the committee and the workers around the club because the bar has been raised. There is time to celebrate and that is well deserved, then the new ball game starts.

■ The first season of senior women’s football in the WRFL saw the all-conquering Manor Lakes team rightly crowned premiers, defeating a gallant Caroline Springs in the grand final under lights at Avalon Airport Oval. The conditions were not the best but the women gave it their all in the biting cold to finish off a historic season. The competition will blossom on the back of the growing participation and interest. ■ You would have forgiven the Hoppers Crossing senior players if they were looking for a solarium to do their post match recovery rather than the icy waters of Williamstown beach last Saturday afternoon. The Warriors won a close fought slog against the Altona Vikings at Point Gellibrand in challenging conditions. The low scoring encounter (3.9 (27) - 3.12 (30) was indicative of the weather more than the skills of the two teams. The grand final between Hoppers Crossing and Deer Park looks a one-sided affair but sport history is littered with the casualties of supposedly unbeatable teams.

some young kids and give them opportunities. “They experienced wins and they experienced the ups and downs of a finals series. We never gave up and were never out of the contest.” It was a tough day all round for the Blues, with their reserves losing their grand final to Greenvale, 15.8 (98)-10.2 (62). McGuane said the club can only guess what could have been if they were closer to full strength. “It’s not easy. We gave 44 players an opportunity to play in a grand final, which is a real positive. “You don’t get a lot of opportunities to make grand finals, let alone win one.”

Keilor was hoping history would repeat itself when it lined up against Aberfeldie in the Essendon District Football League Premier division grand final at the weekend. The last time the Blues were in the grand final, in 2016, their seniors defeated Aberfeldie and their reserves took out Greenvale. The Blues were hoping for another double with both its teams lining up on Sunday, but it wasn’t to be. In the seniors, Keilor kicked the first two goals of the game but it was Aberfeldie that went into the first break 14 points up. Controlling the ball, the Gorillas opened the game up in the second quarter to extend their lead to 41 points at the main break. The Blues needed a miracle for a second straight week, but luck wasn’t on their side. The Gorillas went on to win 17.11 (113)7.10 (52). Blues coach Mick McGuane said they were beaten by a far superior team on the day. They were already without key defenders Michael Tanner, Jay White and Sam Hooper and then lost full-back David Gourdis to injury early in the game. “We were restricted early on with Gourdis done six minutes into the game and we had to restructure down back,” McGuane said. “They controlled the game and we couldn’t stem the blows. “They kicked too many goals from our errors in high percentage spots.” With their backs to the wall, the Blues needed a good third quarter, and while it was their best quarter for the game, they only had two goals to show for it. McGuane said they wasted opportunities. “We kicked 2.5 in the third quarter and it was the only quarter we won. “We missed a lot of opportunities. We couldn’t get the offence going and turned it over too often. “We had enough inside 50s to challenge them, but we didn’t.” McGuane said they lacked any winners on the day, which reflected on the scoreboard. Despite the result, he couldn’t be prouder of the efforts the guys had put in across the year. He said injuries had taken their toll throughout the season and it was again the case on Sunday. “We didn’t have Hooper and Tanner,” he said. “Jay White was injured in the second

What a fairytale finish to the club’s first season in the WRFL, knocking over the previously unbeaten Eagles. President Ivo Havard – no stranger to club success in the west – and his hard-working committee have had their decision to leave the VAFA vindicated in the best possible way, with a premiership cup. Senior coach Ian Denny, in his fifth year at the club, is a smart football operator and has built great support on and off the field. Whether the club takes the giant leap to division one is yet to be ratified but I hope it does, as I believe it will be a strong force in the future of the competition.

Lakers left to lick their wounds against strong Storm

There was no shame in running second for Caroline Springs in the inaugural Western Region Football League senior women’s grand final, according to coach Anthea Stathakis. The Lakers were beaten by not only a better side in Manor Lakes in a 51-point loss at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, but a team that will be revered for many years to come after setting the bar so high in the competition’s first year. The Storm’s season was out of this world – a 15-0 record including finals and a sky high percentage of 2708.93 per cent over the home and away rounds. They are numbers that might not ever be seen in this competition again. “Manor Lakes are the powerhouse team of the competition,” Stathakis said. “They have set the benchmark from the start. “Our girls needed to go out there and give their 100 per cent and no matter what the outcome we’d be proud of them. “They did that and I couldn’t ask for anything

more from my playing group.” Caroline Springs started the game promisingly with some early forward entries. They hit the scoreboard twice, but both were behinds. It did not take long for Manor Lakes to wrest control of the game and once they did they were impossible to stop. “We had a good first 10 or 15 minutes of the first quarter,” Stathakis said. “We did say that we needed to get off to a good start to be competitive against them. “The girls did that, but unfortunately we couldn’t convert our shots into goals.” Caroline Springs’ only goal came in the second quarter through Caitlin Balshaw. By that stage, the Storm had done too much damage. It was a nice reward for Balshaw, who was one of the better Lakers players on the day. “She had a ripper game,” Stathakis said. “If the scoring was a little bit closer, I’d say she would’ve been close to getting best on ground.”

Alexandra Fato produced a strong game under the strain of a tag. Fato has been the standout player in the Lakers midfield this season. “It’s hard when you have two players tagging you, but she still racked up her possessions,” Stathakis said. Ash Stafford’s efforts in defence were described as “phenomenal”. Stafford used her years of football experience to thwart a number of Manor Lakes attack. Caroline Springs will lick its wounds over the summer and come back bigger and stronger. The Lakers can take heart from Manor Lakes, who were in a similar position last season when they came runners-up to an irrepressible Keilor, but turned it around in one off season. “They [Manor Lakes] actually did say after the game that they were us last year and to keep our heads held high,” Stathakis said. Lions on track for sixth By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park players are not getting too caught up in the historical aspects linked to this year’s Western Region Football League division 1 grand final. The Lions will become the first top-flight non-amateur team in AFL Victoria metropolitan football history to achieve a sixth consecutive flag if they can beat Hoppers Crossing in the decider at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. The players are aware of the significance of victory and do not hide from the fact that it has been brought up during the season, but they know if they look too far beyond the first bounce of this Saturday’s season decider, there is a risk their gazing at a potential sixth straight premiership cup might lead them to be being stranded on five. “It’s obviously in the back of our minds, but we just want to get the win,” Deer Park captain Jack Purton-Smith said. “That’s all that matters and we’ll worry about that after and then if we win, we can sit back and go ‘wow, what an achievement’. “For now, the win is all that we want.”

If Deer Park is to win on Saturday, it will always be linked to the record run of premierships between 2013 and 2017. The only players to have featured in all five grand finals were Kwame McHarg and Chris Stewart, while Marc Bullen has either been coach or player coach. Purton-Smith said the hunger remained because of the players who have not even been a part of one, adding that each premiership was unique with its own set of challenges. “There’s been a little bit of talk [of a potential sixth in a row], but I think the main thing is we’ve got a lot of hungry players at the club who are yet to win one as well,” he said. Purton-Smith cherishes every chance he gets to play in a grand final. The skipper missed out on the 2016 grand final after he was injured in the warm-up. He was under a cloud entering the 2018 finals series with a hamstring injury, but got through the semi-final unscathed and should be raring to go on Saturday. “I’ve been doing a lot of work to get it right,” he said. “I’m feeling better, I’m better for the run. “I can’t wait.”

Deer Park ruckman Scott Greenhough believes there is no added pressure on his team to keep the streak alive. He said the emotions of the players will be no different to their opponents. “I think a lot of guys just want to play well on that day, not necessarily thinking we need to win the flag,” he said. “We all want to play well to win together. “The pressure just comes with it and you kind of take it in your stride.” Greenhough, who forms the best ruck tandem in the competition with Stewart, is not even going back two weeks to Deer Park’s huge semi-final win over Altona for inspiration, let alone thinking about 2013 or any of the other premierships in between. “We’re confident in our own game, but I don’t know if [beating Altona in the semi-final] separates us heaps from the competition because it’s much tighter this year, which has been good,” he said. There is no escaping that grand final fever has hit Deer Park though. “This time of the year is always good to be playing,” Greenhough said. “Finals is what you play footy for.”

It was a history-making weekend in the Western Region Football League. Two clubs were crowned senior premiers for the first time when Point Cook claimed division 2 and Point Cook Centrals took out division 3. Point Cook caused a major upset in the division 2 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday, beating the previously undefeated Yarraville Seddon Eagles in an epic by eight points. Bulldogs full-forward Kirk Heberle kicked the game-sealing goal deep in time-on of the last quarter before announcing his retirement from football. The Bulldogs were the underdogs going in, but did not play like it. They were the better side for most of the day, with onballers Jessi Lampi and Matthew Poland dominant. Lampi took out the Rex Swann Medal for best on ground. Wayde Skipper’s experience was vital for Point Cook late in the game as he took a number of goal saving marks in defence. In a low-scoring game, Heberle’s three majors and Alex Grigg’s two were crucial. “We always thought we were a chance,” said Point Cook coach Ian Denny. “We kept believing and we only had to beat them once.” Point Cook Centrals got the better of the Wyndham Suns in a 25-point win in the division 3 decider at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. The Sharks kicked away in the third quarter and did not look back. Brent Sheean earned best-on-ground honours for the Sharks, while Michael Szulc played a starring role. Eagles fade as season comes to an end Western Eagles could not rediscover the magic that saw them earn promotion and become champions of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west conference this season. Taking on north conference title winners Lalor United in inter-league semi-final play, the Eagles were ousted in a 3-2 loss after a half-baked performance at Grange Reserve on Saturday. There is no way you can sour the Eagles season after what they achieved in swooping on the west league promotion and championship double, but they have missed out on a lathering of icing on the cake by being eliminated at the semi-final stage of the battle between the four conference champions that will determine the best overall state league 4 team in 2018. Eagles coach Patrick Mangion was extremely disappointed with his side’s first half showing. The Eagles were in dire straits, trailing by three goals at half-time. “They wanted it more, clearly,” Mangion said.

“They played better in the first half and we let them play. “We were asleep and they took their chances well.” Mangion could not put his finger on why the Western Eagles started so slowly. He said the build up to the game was good and nothing was different in the preparation. “Unfortunately when they went on the pitch, for some reason it wasn’t working,” Mangion said. Mangion said the Western Eagles were better than what they served up in the first-half shocker. He implored his players to dig deep and give it a red hot crack in the second half. “To just play like we usually do,” he said. “Go out there and show initiative and a bit of hunger. “Show that you want to play because unfortunately some of them weren’t into the game in the first half.”

Matt Kowalski brought the Western Eagles to life with two goals in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. Both of Kowalski’s goals came from outside the box with long-range shots. The Eagles had all the momentum and seemed odds on for a third goal when Lalor United had a player sent off. Even with all the peppering of shots on Lalor’s goal, the Eagles could not find an equaling goal. “It was total pressure on them,” Mangion said. “In the end, they defended well. “We just couldn’t find a third one unfortunately. “At least the second half we showed more of what we were capable of.” Lance Jenkinson Ange Soumbassis wins the aerial contest for the Western Eagles on Saturday. Mucci makes her mark By Lance Jenkinson It has been a landmark year in the career of heptathlete Celeste Mucci. The 19-year-old from Altona took enormous steps towards her dream of competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. She represented the Australian open age team for the first time at a major event, competing in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, and was one of the standouts on the Australian team at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland. Mucci is delighted to see her hard work pay off. “The goal is always to get better and better,” she said. “To see the improvement coming along during the season, it makes me want to keep going and keep improving. “I’m happy with how I’m going at the moment.” Mucci’s effort to get a gig to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games is her proudest moment so far. The Williamstown Athletics Club representative will never forget the thrill of competing at a home games. More importantly, the rookie was not out of place, only just missing out on a medal.

She recorded a personal best score of 5915 to finish fourth. “A home games doesn’t come around that often,” Mucci said. “There was a lot of pressure at trials, but I managed to pull through and come first to get the automatic spot. “To compete at Gold Coast was great. “It was really well organised and the crowd was just amazing. “It was one of my favourite competitions so far.” The best of the best heptathletes in Mucci’s age group converged on Tampere in Finland for the under 20 world championships. Two years ago, Mucci finished a creditable 17th, but she had improved vastly since then because of her extra training, experience in competitions and natural progression. Her fifth-placed finish at this year’s event was in line with her upwards career trajectory. “To come away with fifth was great,” Mucci said. “It was such a good improvement from two years ago. “It shows how far I’ve come, so I was really happy with that.” Mucci also demonstrated her leadership skills. The Altona Little Athletics Centre product was co-captain of the Australian team

and wore the honour with pride. “I’ve always been one of the youngest in the team coming up, but now I was top age,” Mucci said. Mucci has enjoyed a well earned break and is beginning preparations with coach Darren Clark for a big summer season. Her aim is to continue improving across all seven events that make up the heptathlon in order to deliver consistently stronger overall points scores. While a heptathlete does not peak until their mid to late 20s, Mucci will leave no stone unturned in her quest to feature for Australia at the 2020 Olympics. “Next year is set up so I’ll be in really good form for 2020 trials,” she said. “That’s been a goal for such a long time and we’re planning towards that.” Mucci is the September nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Mucci will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist her in achieving her sporting goals.

Green Gully will put its National Premier League top-flight status on the line this Sunday when it faces NPL 2 side Moreland City in the promotionrelegation play-off at AAMI Park. The Cavaliers find themselves in this predicament because of their horrible second half of the season, in which they slid to third-last spot on the ladder after looking finals-bound mid-season. The winner of this match will be a top-tier NPL team next season, while the loser will play in NPL 2. St Albans Saints would have jumped at the chance of a spot in this weekend’s promotion-relegation play-off. The Saints were smashed 4-1 by Moreland City in the play-off eliminator at Jack Edwards Reserve on Saturday. The only joy for the Saints came through a goal from Michael Grgic late in the first half. In women’s NPL, Calder United saved its worst until last. United was eliminated from the title race in brutal fashion, losing 4-0 to FC Bulleen Lions in a cut-throat semi-final at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday. The manner of the defeat was surprising considering Calder finished a massive 10 points above Bulleen in the regular season. The future is bright for Calder, but the loss to Bulleen will sting over the summer. The grand final will be contested by premier plate winner South Melbourne and Bulleen Lions. Lance Jenkinson
