Carjack crackdown By Alesha Capone Brimbank is the state’s top spot for carjackings, according to figures from the Crime Statistics Agency. CSA data supplied to Star Weekly shows there was a total of 200 carjackings reported to Victoria Police between April last year and March this year – 48 of those were recorded in Melbourne’s west. There were 18 carjackings in Brimbank, including three in St Albans and three in Sunshine North for the 12 month period. Casey, in the city’s south-east, recorded 16 carjackings for the same time frame, followed by Greater Dandenong and Hume, which both had 12. Melton was fifth-highest in the state with 11 carjackings, including five in the Melton township itself.

Elsewhere in the west, there were seven carjackings in Hobsons Bay, and six each in Wyndham and Maribyrnong. Brimbank’s Acting Police Inspector Helen Chugg said that “unfortunately” Brimbank was among the areas that had seen an increase in carjackings in recent years. “We understand there is community concern about these crimes,” she said. “While this type of crime is high profile and has high community concern, thankfully it is rare. “Carjackings often involve cross-regional offending, meaning offenders may reside in one area, steal a car on the other side of town and then commit further offences in another area. “To tackle this, our detectives work together at a cross-regional level, sharing intelligence and linking offences to inform our operational response to solve the crimes.” Inspector Chugg said Taskforce Wayward, a police operation which began in March last year in response to “high harm offences” in the west, had led to 197 people being arrested. She said another operation, Operation Regnant, resulted in more than 650 arrests. “Local police complement these taskforces with highly visible proactive patrols aimed at disruption and prevention,” she said. “We are cracking down on people wanted on warrants, ensuring offenders are complying with their strict bail conditions, and managing persons of interest.”

High flying kicks, powerful punches and a world of chaos has been promised for a new wrestling show set to launch in Ardeer. Mayhem Pro will hit the town this Sunday at 83 Suspension street, Ardeer from 4pm. One of the headline acts JXT (pictured) said the show incorporates the best elements of live sports entertainment. “It’s going to be a show for wrestling fans, by wrestling fans,” he said. “We want to put emphasis on the right things – the wrestlers and the characters involved. “We want to interact with the fans and give them something they can engage with.” JXT said the unusual decision to put the show on a Sunday is a positive. “Australian wrestling is healthier than it’s ever been – there’s so much happening on Friday and Saturdays, which is why we’re doing it on a Sunday,” he said. “Crowds are up, companies like the WWE are interested and we want to tap into that.” JXT said it was an easy decision to bring the show to Brimbank. “We wanted an area that wasn’t smack bang in the middle of the city, but close to a train station,” he said. “We want to engage with the community and build up around it.” He said the audience won’t go home disappointed. “This is live athletic drama. Our most wanted By Tate Papworth Brimbank ranks among the highest in the state for the number of outstanding warrants and police have had enough. Warrant Wednesdays, an operation to apprehend the muncipality’s most wanted, will be launched tomorrow and police are calling on residents to help in identifying or locating people wanted by police. Each Wednesday, photos and names of people wanted by police in the north-western suburbs will be uploaded to the Brimbank Police Service Area Eyewatch page on Facebook and splashed across social media. said the operation provided a chance for residents to report crime and assist their local police in lowering the number of outstanding warrants. “This is a chance for the residents to assist us in locating wanted people and help make the community safer,” he said. Warrants are issued by a magistrate when someone fails to appear in court or when someone breaches bail conditions. Sergeant Boskovski said the people police were targeting each had a number of outstanding warrants. He said the operation also served as an opportunity for those with outstanding warrants to make right. “The people we are targeting in Warrant

Wednesdays will usually have multiple outstanding warrants and are urged to make themselves known to local police sooner rather than later,” he said. “This also serves as a reminder for anyone wanted by police – you are encouraged to come in to your local police station straight away.” Residents who have any information that could assist police are being encouraged to call the Sunshine or Keilor Downs police stations or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. House prices in Ardeer have risen by the highest average amount in Brimbank, according to the latest revaluation figures. Properties across Brimbank have risen in price since the last valuation in 2016, but Ardeer received the largest rise overall with an average increase of $176,981, bringing the average house price in the suburb to $564,711. Keilor (up $170,834), Kealba (up $171, 806) and St Albans (up $163,977) also experienced a sharp average price jump, with the revaluation used to determine the council rates for this year. The council’s chief financial strategist, Shane Marr, said properties that had increased in value by more than the Brimbank average would receive a steeper rates increase, while some areas of Brimbank had actually seen a decrease in their rates after increasing in value by less than the municipality average. “Council sets a total budget amount based on what council plans to deliver (and) each ratepayer’s share of this total amount depends on the value of their property compared to the value of other properties within the municipality,” Mr Marr said. “About 40 per cent of ratepayers will receive a reduction in their rates, and about 20 per cent of ratepayers will receive no change or an increase of less than 5 per cent. “If your rates have increased by more than the rate cap, this is because your property value has increased by more than the average increase across Brimbank.” Properties in Sydenham (up $112,672), Hillside (up $119,346) and Sunshine West (up $137,281) experienced the smallest average increase in the revaluation, while Keilor (average house price of $876,394) and Taylors Lakes ($733,591) remain the two most expensive suburbs to buy into in Brimbank. According to the council revaluation report (completed by the state government) Brimbank properties improved in capital value by 30 per cent, however property values in Ardeer, Albanvale, Kealba, St Albans and Deer Park have improved by over 40 per cent. The countdown is on for Sunshine’s spectacular Lantern Festival. Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said there will be a range of activities for the whole family. “This has always been a multicultural, family-oriented free event for the community,” he said. “We’ve got plenty of surprises – there’s a giraffe coming – she might be real, you won’t know until you see her. And of course we have a spectacular fireworks show planned.” With a crowd of more than 50,000 people expected, Mr Luk said countless hours had gone into planning the festival. “It’s an enormous task to put on an event like this for 50,000-60,000 people. “It takes up a lot of volunteering time and resources, but we always try to put in 110 per cent to put on an event the community can be proud of.” Street performers, old fire trucks and an array of food are just some of the items planned for the day. “There’s plenty for the kids too – we’ve got face-painting, sand sculpting and lantern making and the wildlife show,” Mr Luk said. Lantern Festival ready to light up

St Albans Secondary College is the best performing Brimbank school based on VCE results, according to Good Education Group. The group last week launched its 2018 edition of The Good Schools Guide, which identifies the best performing schools in Victoria based on median VCE scores. St Albans Secondary College tops the list for Brimbank, with a median VCE study score of 30. The college also had the highest per centage, eight per cent, of students who achieved a study score of more than 40. While Overnewton Anglican Community College and Catholic Regional College Sydenham also had a median VCE score of 30, they had less students achieve scores above 40 with 7 and 4 per cent respectively. Keilor Downs College, Copperfield College and Sunshine College all had median scores of 29. Good Education Group chief executive Chris Lester said St Albans’ top ranking was a sign that investment in government schools was starting to bear fruit. “There’s been significant money invested in the state school system and we’re starting to see results track upwards,” he said. Mr Lester said while still a little way behind schools in the south east, Brimbank compared well with other schools. “The top schools around the state had a mean score of 37, which isn’t too far off where the Brimbank schools sit,” he said. “The difference is with scores over 40. Some of the top schools have up to 35 per cent of students getting a score over 40, whereas it’s 8 per cent in Brimbank.”

Robbery arrests

Detectives have charged a man following a spree of attempted robberies on service stations across Brimbank last month. The 21-year-old Deer Park man was charged with three counts of attempted armed robbery, one count of armed robbery and one count of theft of a motor vehicle. The charges relate to attempted armed robberies allegedly committed on service stations at Hampshire Road in Sunshine, Ballarat Road in Albion and Ballarat Road in Deer Park, as well as at a bottle shop on Ballarat Road in Deer Park. The man was remanded in custody. Police are looking for a second offender.

Lakeview’s rock of ages A rock performance for the ages hit Lakeview Senior College last week. More than three years had passed since the school’s last production and staff and students said the excitement levels were at fever pitch. The students performed Rock of Ages, which teacher Dave Oxley said hit a number of high notes. “This has been almost a whole year’s worth of work – the band is pretty rocking, there’s lot’s of big power ballad numbers – it’s a whole heap of fun,” he said. Teacher Caroline Willie oversaw the production and said there was something for everyone. “These guys have been working flat out since the beginning of the year to learn lines

and rehearse. A lot of them are in year 12 and they’ve really taken it on board and run with it,” she said. Gia took on the lead role of Sherrie, a young girl who, in 1987, arrives in Los Angeles from Oklahoma with dreams of becoming a singer. “Sherrie was really relatable for me, playing her has been something I’ve loved.” Gia said. However Gia isn’t the only one who found her character relatable. Souritra plays bar-back Drew and said he loved playing up on his mannerisms. “I find Drew really amusing because he’s got little quirks. I like bringing humour to serious things, which was fun to play,” he said. Tate Papworth

Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad are appealing for public help as part of their investigation into the factory fire in West Footscray. The fire started at the Somerville Road business soon after 5am on Thursday, August 30. Investigators believe it may still be some time before they are able to completely access the property and undertake all the required forensic work. Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who has footage of the fire or the factory in the lead-up to the blaze. Sunshine West factory to close By Tate Papworth As many as 100 jobs will go by the end of the year when a Sunshine-based air-conditioner manufacturer shuts down. Buffalo Trident, a branch of Bitzer Australia, is planning to close its operations in Sunshine West. The company confirmed the news to radio station 3AW. “Buffalo Trident’s manufacturing operations at Sunshine Victoria will be shut

down by the end of 2018,” the company told the station. “Gunter and Bitzer are convinced that this co-operation will serve the market in a competitive and responsive way.” According to the company’s website, the Sunshine West facility was built in 1996. The company makes large air-conditioning units for industrial workplaces. Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union organiser Alistair Thomas said it was a blow

to the industry. “It’s a sad day for Australian jobs – another international company closing down its Australian manufacturing operations while the federal government stands by without lifting a finger to help the Australian workers,” he said. Mr Thomas said the union would work to help affected employees. “The AMWU has been working closely with the company and state government to assist

the workers throughout this difficult period,” Mr Thomas said. “We’ve been trying to get the workers placed into other jobs, assisting them with things like resumes, making sure their skills have been recognised correctly, and ensuring they receive all of the correct redundancy entitlements when they finish up.” Star Weekly attempted to contact Bizer Australia for comment.

Students dare to dream Secondary school students will celebrate their homelands through song and dance when they perform at My Island Dream later this month. The event is a chance for students to showcase their Pasifika culture, with 10 schools from across Melbourne’s north and west taking part. It was started in 2016 by the Westside Pasifika Youth Committee, Brimbank council and Vaiusu the Creators Space, with the aim of creating a cultural celebration which promotes inclusiveness and helps to break down barriers. Students from Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii, Aotearoa, Niue and Tuvalu will perform at the event, which will be held at Enjoy Church, Sunshine North on September 22. No more Dr in the house By Ewen McRae It’s been 35 years since Dr Liliana Elberg saw her first patient in St Albans – this week she will see her last. Dr Elberg will close the Collins Street Medical Centre on her 72nd birthday on September 13, bringing to an end a community attachment that began by accident. After working at the Western Hospital in Williamstown in the early ’80s, Dr Elberg was asked by the former St Albans Community Health Centre to do some relief work, that eventually lead to her working full-time in the St Albans community. “I was driving from Glen Huntly every day, but I got sucked into the community and fell in love with it,” Dr Elberg said. “A fantastic nurse I worked with convinced me to buy this place. We had it up and running in two weeks and we’ve been here ever since.” Dr Elberg came to Australia from Ukraine as a refugee in 1979. It was her multi-lingual background that initially had medical centres in the west seeking her services, but it was her loyal patients who ensured she continued to work in St Albans for so long. “I love my patients here,” she said. “They’ve been very loyal to me over numerous generations, and it’s been a very enjoyable 35 years. “I’m very sad to leave. A lot of people were in tears when I told them, because it’s a long time to be attached to the area, but I need a change and I think the time is right.” Dr Elberg will continue to work at a surgery in St Kilda, and still hopes to see some familiar faces come through the doors. “There’s been so many good times here, so it will be nice to stay in touch.”

‘Green’ gas gets gong An innovative project by Western Health has been nominated as a finalist in the prestigious Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards. Under the project, which has been nominated in the health category, the hospital swapped anaesthetic gases to achieve environmental benefit. According to Western Health the gases used as anaesthetics have similar clinical effects and can be interchanged, although each has a markedly different global warming potential. The Western Health program helped convert anaesthetists’ choice of anaesthetic agent from desflurane and nitrous oxide to sevoflurane and propofol where clinically possible, to reduce greenhouse impacts and achieve financial savings. Under the project, desflurane was removed from the anaesthetics trolley and staff undertook education sessions. Sustainability Victoria chief executive Stan Krpan said the project was exceptional. “Western Health demonstrated to the judges that they have translated the principles of sustainability into practice to achieve outstanding results for our environment and the state of our future,” he said. There are currently eight warrants of apprehension for Ali TALEB. The warrants were issued between August 1-14, 2018 at both the Sunshine and Melbourne magistrates court. The relevant offences include possessing a drug of dependence, driving whilst disqualified, burglary, theft of motor vehicle and failing to answer bail. A Keilor woman has been sentenced to a four-year community correction order for causing a horror crash on the Calder Freeway in 2016 which killed an Ascot Vale man. Sophie Williams, 49, pleaded guilty in the County Court last month to one charge of dangerous driving causing death and two charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, following the incident in which a tanker truck flipped onto another car, killing 48-year-old Duk Nguyen. The court heard Williams was driving in the left outbound lane of the Calder Freeway, East Keilor about 8.30am on May 24, 2016. Traffic in her lane was moving slowly due to an unrelated traffic incident on a nearby exit that had caused traffic to bank up onto the freeway. Williams attempted to move into the centre lane to avoid the congestion, and in doing so drove into the path of a fuel tanker which struck the driver’s side door of her car, setting off a chain reaction of crashes. A number of witnesses to the collision described Williams’ car pulling out into the path of the truck. They said Williams’ car was not fully into the lane before the truck collided with it. They said the truck driver had no time to either brake or take successful evasive action. The collision ultimately involved 11 vehicles and ended with the truck rolling onto a sedan and killing Mr Nguyen. Another car was also flipped onto its roof,

causing serious injuries to its driver. The truck driver also sustained serious injuries to his left knee and right thigh in the collision. The court heard the truck driver has been medicated since the collision to help him sleep and deal with the emotional consequences of the collision. He has been unable to return to work. Judge Mandy Fox said while Williams’ offending fell towards the lower end for offences of this type, it was a reminder to the community of the dangers of negligent driving. “The accident was caused because you either failed to look, failed to look adequately, or failed to properly evaluate the speed of the truck,” Judge Fox said. “This moment of misjudgment or inattention means that you drove your vehicle in a manner that was dangerous to the public, having regard to all the circumstances. However the time and length of your dangerous driving was extremely short. “It is critical that the message is constantly sent to all road users that they must, at all times, pay due care and attention. “The result of a momentary failure, as this case demonstrates, can be catastrophic for other road users. One life has been taken, and others forever altered. Driving on our roads, particularly highways, demands that drivers must be focused, cautious and attentive at all times.” Williams will have to complete 300 hours of community work and had her licence disqualified for 18 months.

Matthew Spiteri has a passion for matters of the heart, and with good reason. “I was born with a heart condition myself,” Mr Spiteri said. “They always had to resuscitate me back when I was a baby. I had open heart surgery when I was two weeks old, and I’ve had a few more surgeries since then. “I may look fine to other people but my scars tell a different story.” Mr Spiteri will host his fifth fundraiser for the Heart Foundation and Fontan Registry at the Deer Park Club on September 15. He has raised more than $25,000 through

similar events throughout the years. This year’s fundraiser will feature a dinner dance with entertainment from The Tequila Brothers and award-winning Elvis tribute artist Sean Luke Spiteri. The night will also include raffles and auctions. “It’s [heart disease] the leading cause of death anywhere in the world, which is why we do events like this to help find better treatments and help those who need operations,” he said. Brimbank drug deaths alarm ‘‘

The number of drug-related deaths in Brimbank is rising. Not-for-profit organisation Penington Institute has released its annual overdose report for 2018, which showed a spike in deaths in Brimbank. In total, 69 people died of a drug-related death in the Brimbank area from 2012 to 2016, compared to 43 deaths from 2002 to 2006. Penington Institute chief executive John Ryan said that the death toll was alarming.

“The number of drug-related deaths in this area is trending upwards and that should act as a strong wake-up call,” he said. “From 2001 to 2016, the drug type claiming the most lives in the area is unsurprisingly opioids such as codeine, heroin, oxycodone and fentanyl.”

The report reveals that there has been an 87 per cent increase in prescription opioid deaths from 2008 to 2014 in Australia. It also states nationwide, prescriptions for opioids have jumped from 10 million a year in 2009 to 14 million. Mr Ryan said drug-related deaths are often accidental. “The drug fentanyl is enormous cause for alarm. It is a synthetic opioid, up to 100 times more powerful than pure morphine and it is a key and growing part of Australia’s overdose crisis,” he said.

“It is claiming more lives than ever before. The number of accidental deaths involving fentanyl, pethidine and tramadol jumped nine times from 2001 to 2016.” Mr Ryan said the federal government needs to change the way it deals with the problem. “Spending priorities are wrong in Australia – 65 per cent of government investment tackling illicit drugs is spent on law enforcement to reduce supply,” he said. “Just 22 per cent is spent on treatment, 9.5 per cent on prevention and 2.2 per cent on harm reduction.”

Be kind to your kidneys much of it, but I had lost some weight, and my appetite was down, but I just thought it was a change in me.” Ms Considine has been on dialysis since July 2017 and is on the waiting list for a new kidney, but on September 9 she joined with thousands of others for the annual Big Red Kidney Walk to raise money and awareness for Kidney Health Australia. “Kidney Health Australia do a lot for people suffering from kidney disease, so I’m glad I can play a part in helping out,” Ms Considine said. “Before I was diagnosed I didn’t even know what my kidneys did, so a big part of all this is education and making people aware that these conditions affect people of all ages.”

Sunshine’s Sheree Considine credits a simple check-up with diagnosing her kidney disease, and now she’s helping to spread awareness. Ms Considine, 36, visited an optometrist in July 2016 after experiencing some blurred vision, soon after she was told she had an auto-immune condition known as IgA nephropathy which had reduced her kidney function to 20 per cent. “I’d just returned from a bit of time working overseas, and the optometrist sent me off to the eye and ear hospital for some scans after seeing some bleeding in my eye,” Ms Considine said. “They were most worried about my high blood pressure, but they did some tests and eventually discovered I had this auto-immune condition and my kidney’s were struggling to function properly. “It was pretty serious at the time, and they didn’t know how long I’d had it. Looking back, because I was travelling I hadn’t thought

As someone who works in the community health sector, this statistic saddens me; and I’m always looking for ways to encourage people experiencing mental illness or suicidal thoughts, to seek support. Thursday 13 September, is RUOK? Day, when we’re all encouraged to ask friends, family—even strangers—if they’re ok. Research shows that 52 per cent of people would like to be asked this simple question—so why don’t we all get on board and support this cause? The RUOK? website, ruok.org.au, provides a guide to help you ask if someone’s ok. It’s important to ask the

question: RUOK?; listen without judgement; encourage action, and check to see how people are doing. It’s also important to show you’re interested, ask open questions, not interrupt or feel like you need to have all the answers. Jan Brown was recently recognised for 45 years service to the education department. She works at the Jackson School in St Albans and spoke with Ewen McRae.

I’ve lived in Brimbank (City of Sunshine) since 1971, worked at Jackson School since 1980 and my sons played sport with St Albans football and cricket clubs. What do you like about the area? I like the diversity of Brimbank, all the great restaurants, parks and the opportunities it gives to growing families. What could make the area better? Council cleaning up the local streets. Lots of people dump rubbish because tip fees are so high. Residents used to get two free tip services a year with their rates. I know we get hard rubbish collections, but people still throw out stuff at any time of year and it just sits there until someone complains. What is your favourite place to go for a feed in Brimbank? For breakfast or lunch, I can’t go past Watervale Cafe in Taylors Road, and Phi Phi Vietnamese restaurant in Alfrieda Street, St Albans, has fantastic food. Congratulations on your 45 years in the education sector. How does it feel to reach this milestone? To be quite honest, it came as a surprise to realise I’d got to 45 years. I’ve been privileged to work with amazing students, wonderful and

exuberant teachers and fabulous, dedicated teacher aides over the years. What’s the best thing about your job and working at Jackson School? I love the fact that every day is different and interesting. I’ve been at Jackson School for nearly 39 years and the school has evolved greatly since 1980. I love that we have so many young staff members who are willing and able to educate students with disabilities in such an enthusiastic manner. They love to share their successes and ‘light bulb’ moments. I also love the support all staff offer each other when something doesn’t go quite right. What’s been the biggest change in education and schooling during your time? When I first started at Jackson School, the main focus for many years was independent living skills. Now we offer a modified mainstream curriculum, where every student has an individual learning plan and to have a part of their achievements and successes is humbling. We also have a VCAL option with an amazing success rate where 100 per cent of our graduating students are involved in ongoing programs or employment. What would people be surprised to know about your job? This is one question that I’m not sure that I can answer. I think to work at Jackson School you need to have a sense of humour and be flexible and resilient.

Melton Council is attempting to restrict the freedom of the press by a proposed by-law which will vet all comments made to the media. One of the most publicly criticised councils in the western suburbs in recent times, Melton Council is sensitive to press statements by some of its members and the new by-law is an attempt to freeze the free flow of information.

Albanvale Residents’ Association has given the Transport Minister, Mr Kennan, a fortnight to respond to a list of demands it has made for a better, fairer public transport deal for the St Albans, Albanvale, Deer Park, Ardeer and Albion areas.

Plans to introduce a special rates and charges scheme to promote and develop Sunshine came under fire last week for being “unreasonable” and not benefiting the entire business centre. Brimbank council received 30 submissions, including a 10-signature petition, on the scheme from property owners and tenants in Hampshire, Devonshire, Ballarat and Durham roads.

As pediatric surgeon Professor Paddy Dewan heads off to Papua New Guinea to operate on sick children, his future at Sunshine Hospital remains unclear. Dr Dewan is awaiting the outcome of a peer inquiry. The professor has been working in developing nations for some years and has performed operations on 1736 ill children, in addition to the thousands of children he has operated on during his time at the Royal Children’s and Sunshine hospitals.

SPORT Springers keen to join grand final party “We pretty much put players in prime positions to sustain the lead and weather the pressure. “We managed to score on a break to get it 3-0 and the match was absolutely done by then.” Nick Toogood, Jatinder Singh and Paramjit Dhillon were the goalscorers for Springers. Gorton said their forward line ran the defence ragged. It was the first time the side had been able to field their best line-up and having got through without injuries, they look set to have the same line-up again this week. “It’s the first time in this competition and we’re playing against more established clubs,” Gorton said. “We’re playing some good level of hockey and hopefully it can continue.” The Springers face Footscray in the grand final on Saturday.

The two teams played each other in the semi-finals just over a week a go. Gorton said they’re better prepared this time around “We haven’t beaten them. The last time we ran out of legs. “It’s a whole different game this time.” The metro B team just fell short of reaching the grand final. Scores were level at 1-1 after regular time, before Springers lost on penalties to Melton 3-2. The weekend’s results mean the Springers have three of their four senior teams in grand finals. ■ The achievement of the Deer Park Football Club to make its sixth straight division one grand final is remarkable and testament predominately to three men – president Mark McGoldrick, senior coach Marc Bullen and benefactor Glenn Allison. There are people like Jamie Madigan, Luke Summers, Mark Lanham and many others who have made ongoing contributions and enjoyed the success every bit as much as any of the players. Chris Stewart and Kwame McHarg are the survivors of the past five and will etch their names even deeper into the history of the competition if they win a sixth premiership medal. Good luck to them. ■ At the other end of the premiership success scale is the Point Cook Centrals Football Club, which will be in the division three grand finals this weekend in reserves and seniors. Pretty impressive for a club on the brink of closure little more than a year ago. The club’s under 13s won the flag and Tarkyn Findlay took out the competition best and fairest award. Like all clubs, Centrals has relied on many volunteers and locals to get to this point and Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval will be the biggest day in the club’s short history when it takes on Wyndham Suns.

By Tara Murray Keilor has pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in Essendon District Football League premier division history to win through to this week’s grand final. At three-quarter time the Blues trailed Strathmore by 44 points with the Mores looking like they would join Aberfeldie in the grand final. While many people thought the game was over, Keilor coach Mick McGuane hadn’t given up hope. The Blues kicked the first couple of goals of the final quarter and it was game-on. The Blues kept coming and when Dean Galea converted truly in the 25th minute, the Blues were in front. They stayed there, winning 12.17 (89)-12.15 (87). McGuane said it was one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the league. “It was an amazing fightback and showed the great spirit of the club,” he said. “A lot would have thought we were down and out, and rightly so. “We know we can score at speed and if we got what we wanted and adhered to what was said at three-quarter time we [knew we] could do it.” McGuane said they weren’t playing their best football in the first three quarters and thought they were a chance if they could lift it another level. He said the end they were kicking at in the final quarter, had been the scoring end all day. “We had nine scoring shots at goal in the second quarter,” he said. “We didn’t finish it off and were sometimes taking the wrong option. “I’ve seen us kick 10 goals in a quarter, I know how quickly we can kick goals. “It went our way in the last quarter.” McGuane was full of credit for the job that Strathmore did for the first three quarters. “Unfortunately there had to be a winner and loser,” he said. “Their back six were fantastic for three quarters. We changed the dynamic and made them defend. “We hunted the ground ball.” Galea kicked three goals, including two in the last quarter. McGuane said there was a lot of contributors across the board, but no one stood out. The Blues finished with just two players on the bench. McGuane said it was too early to say whether they would get up and he would see how everyone recovered. Damian Cavka was a late withdrawal and was one of a number of key players missing from the side.

■ The division two grand final will be a beauty, with the two best sides of the season – Point Cook and Yarraville Seddon – lining up to see who makes the jump in 2019. The Eagles and the Bulldogs finished top two in seniors and reserves and both clubs will be hoping for a super successful day at Avalon Airport Oval. The Bulldogs inaugural season has been a huge plus for the club and whatever happens Sunday, president Ivo Havard, his committee and senior coach Ian Denny, can be pleased with their efforts. ■ Sad to hear of the passing of former Bulldog coach and player Ian ‘Bluey’ Hampshire. The former Cat and Bulldog ruckman succumbed last week after a lengthy health battle following a stroke. Several of his former teammates were regular visitors to his nursing home in recent years and even took in the 2016 premiership cup. He was loved by both his teammates and supporters alike. Williamstown is also mourning the passing of former administrator and Life Member Bob Pearman, remembered by Terry Wheeler as ‘one of the best’. Vale to two very special men.

Caroline Springs is through to its first men’s Hockey Victoria grand final. After two of the club’s women’s sides won premierships last year in their first season, the men’s side is keen to join the party this year. The two men’s sides played in preliminary finals on Saturday with mixed results. The men’s metro A north west team won through to the grand final, while the metro B west team was knocked out on penalties. Men’s coach David Gorton said they were thrilled to have made their first grand final in such a short period of time. Gorton said once they gained the lead early against MUHC in metro A north, they were able to control momentum of the game. “We worked hard in the first half in a high intensity game and were up 2-0 at half-time,” he said.

Eagles’ stylish finish points the way for a classy future North Sunshine has finished the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 soccer season on a six game winning streak. The Eagles’ late-season dominance continued with a 4-1 win over Altona City away at Kim Reserve on Saturday. Unfortunately for Eagles coach Ben Isai, there are no prizes for finishing second in this competition, but it confirms to him that the club is on the right track. “We’re very happy to finish the year like that,” he said. “I know it’s not first – we ended up finishing second – but we’ll take that and build.” North Sunshine conceded the first goal to Altona City. It appeared as though the Eagles might be heading for an upset loss after a lacklustre opening 15 minutes, but the Altona City goal seemed to spark them into action. The remaining 75 minutes was a case of Eagle excellence as they piled on four unanswered goals.

Ajak Panek capped a fine first season for North Sunshine with a hat-trick. The former Western Suburbs striker scored an equaliser in the 34th minute, taking the game to 1-1 at half-time, then two goals in the 15 minutes after the break. “He came to us from a completely different system … in terms of philosophy, so it was always going to take time for him to adapt to our style,” Isai said. “Today we saw a complete performance from him.” David Dodaj completed the rout with a goal 10 minutes from time. Dodaj will assess his future over the summer, but that might have been the veteran’s last game in the top team. “He’s a 16-year veteran of the club,” Isai said. “Technically he’s one of the best players at the club. It gave the crowd a lot of excitement knowing that he scored.” Creative midfielder Nick Epifano assisted with three of North Sunshine’s goals, while defender Daniel Dragovic was lauded for his

ability to keep dangerous Altona City striker Ayodeji Omoboye in check. In other state league 1 results, Keilor Park edged out Banyule City 3-2 to claim fourth spot. Deer Park does it again By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park is one win away from a historic sixth straight Western Region Football League division 1 premiership. The Lions battered minor premiers Altona by 53 points in the second semi-final at Avalon Airport Oval to book their place in the grand final. Lions coach Marc Bullen is aware of the significance of a sixth consecutive flag. “If we can win six grand finals in a row, that would be uncharted waters,” he said. “I’m really confident in the team. “We’ve played a lot of footy together. “We’ve been exposed to the big stage, we’ve been exposed to pressure.” Deer Park was slow out of the blocks. The Lions trailed Altona by 22 points midway through the opening term. “We were that little bit rusty that first quarter,” Bullen said. “It was a tough hard grind early, but once we sort of got the ball rolling, we just had too much

class across the field.” The bulk of the second and third quarters was played between the arcs. While there were momentum swings, neither side could assert their dominance. Deer Park edged it on the scoreboard by nine points and would have gone into three-quarter time with a pep in their step, but no one could have foreseen what they were about to produce in an electrifying last quarter. With Altona down two rotations and tiring, the Lions upped the ante to produce arguably their best quarter of football of the season, piling on seven goals to nil in the last 30 minutes to clinch victory and take a massive psychological edge over their opponents should they meet again in the grand final. “To grind the way that we did early and to hit the line late the way we did was a fantastic effort from the boys,” Bullen said. “There were so many critical moments where we had the upper hand. “We were able to win the one-on-one contests more often than not.

“It was just a really good confidence building entry into a grand final.” Such was the evenness of their team performance, it was hard to pinpoint a standout player for Deer Park. James Wong was always a threat for Deer Park inside forward 50. Coming into the match off a limited preparation, Wong managed to kick five goals. “He was first class Wongy,” Bullen said. “He was so important for our ability to manufacture goals.” Deer Park will meet the winner of the preliminary final match between Altona and Hoppers Crossing at Burbank Oval on Saturday. Meanwhile, the division 2 grand final has been set with Yarraville-Seddon to meet Point Cook at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. Point Cook was too strong for Parkside in the preliminary final, winning by 83 points in a one-sided game at the Whitten Oval. The division 3 grand final will be contested by Point Cook Centrals and Wyndham Suns at Werribee on Saturday.

Caroline Springs was out for vengeance after its semi-final shocker and got that with a 28-point win over Spotswood in the Western Region Football League senior women’s preliminary final at the Whitten Oval on Saturday. The Lakers were disappointed in a 60-point semi-final loss to Manor Lakes seven days earlier, but coach Anthea Stathakis felt it was important to move on quickly. “You can’t be dwelling on previous games, so all we were focusing on was the Spotswood game and what we had to do to get up there,” Stathakis said. “The girls had a really good game today. We’re over the moon to be in the grand final.” Caroline Springs came out with intent early in the game. The Lakers were up 20 to zip at quarter-time and extended their lead to 30 by half-time. The second half was more of an arm wrestle, but Stathakis decided to rest some players in preparation for their grand final against Manor Lakes. “Towards the end I did take off some of my players, especially my midfield, to rest them for next week,” she said. Alexandra Fato capped a starring role for Caroline Springs with two goals. Fato has stamped herself as one of the best midfielders in the competition. “Just the way she reads the play and gets the ball out of the midfield to our forward line is unbelievable,” Stathakis said. Carissa Whiley was superb in the ruck, Maddison-Eve Fenech was prolific in the midfield and Caitlin Pretty was the main target in attack, finishing with two goals. Teenager Taylah Kolevski had been a revelation for the Lakers this finals series. Caroline Springs will face Manor Lakes in the grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday at 5.15pm.
