Pokies ‘health crisis’ By Tate Papworth
A grand thrill for Ella
(Joe Mastroianni)
Brimbank continues to top the state for pokies losses. Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation data shows that pokies venues in Brimbank took more than $12.8 million from residents last month. Brimbank’s total losses in 2017-18 were $139.51 million, making it the Victorian municipality with the greatest pokies losses – a ranking it has held for a decade. Brimbank councillor Virginia Tachos said the figures were troubling and the damage they represented to the community needed to stop. “It is disturbing that the new financial year has opened with a nine per cent increase in July to a record $12.81 million in losses in just one month,” Cr Tachos said. “If this keeps up Brimbank’s losses could top $150 million in 2018-19.” Cr Tachos called for legislation to be introduced to ease the pain. “Our communities are suffering from gambling harm and it’s only getting worse,” she said. “This is a public health crisis and it needs to end. “We call on the state government and opposition parties to commit to $1 maximum bets, reduce venue opening hours and lower the cap on the number of pokies machines in our community.” Alliance for Gambling Reform spokesman and director Tim Costello said the problem was deepening across the state and government intervention was required. “Increased losses mean rising harm, family violence, suicide, financial hardship and crime, which is particularly disturbing when you consider it is often our most vulnerable communities who are being exploited by poker machines,” he said. “Successive Victorian governments have become reliant on the easy money of gambling taxes, but this has got to stop. “With the state election just three months away, we need the major parties to come up with new policies which will reduce pokies losses. “We are saying the next Victorian Parliament must show some spine and heart and address this issue to prevent the needless suicides, family violence, bankruptcy and fraud which flows when $2.7 billion a year is ripped from the community through addictive poker machines in suburban pubs and clubs.”
Setting foot on the hallowed MCG turf would be a dream come true for any kid, yet Ella Mazjerin has done just that and is gearing up to do it again. Ella was named as an Auskicker of the Year nominee for round 22 of the AFL season, playing a game on the MCG at half-time of the Essendon-Richmond match and being interviewed by Channel Seven. “It was really scary, but I had lots of fun,” she said. “One of the boys said we’ll pass it to you but after you kick a goal we’re going to go hard. “It was my first time at the ground – it was so big, and pretty cool being on TV, too.” A passionate Essendon supporter, Ella said skipper Dyson Heppell and small forward Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti were her favourite players. She hopes one day she will pull on a Bombers jumper in the AFLW. On top of her round 22 experience, Ella will be part of the build-up to the AFL grand final with the other 21 Auskicker of the Year finalists, meeting players, joining in the grand final parade and presenting the premiership medals to the winning side on the final Saturday in September. She will also take part in an Auskick game on the MCG at half-time of the big game. “It’ll be really exciting,” Ella said. “I think it’ll be lots of fun and when I give the medal out, I’ll get to meet some new players, which is pretty cool.” The winner of the Auskicker of the year award will be announced on September 27. West woes in $50b rail loop plan By Tate Papworth Plans to build a $50 billion Suburban Rail Loop won’t alleviate the west’s transport woes, according to a transport advocacy group. A 90-kilometre underground rail track to connect Frankston to Werribee and provide a direct rail link to Melbourne Airport was unveiled by the State Government last week. The landmark project would connect most of the middle suburbs in the south-east and east, including universities and TAFES. But
commuters in the west will only have the option of boarding the train from Werribee or Sunshine – more than 30 kilometres apart. Western Transport Alliance chair Jonathon Marsden said significant gaps in the western suburbs’ transport grid urgently needed addressing. “At present, only three per cent of people working in the west use public transport to get to work, and a quarter of the west’s population have no walking-distance access to public transport at all,” he said.
“Investment in a high-quality bus network for the west, including better co-ordination of existing services, would help to address these challenges within five years, rather than waiting 30 years for a public transport option to get around our region.” Councillor Marsden said the problem will only get worse if not addressed. “The west needs timely investment, both for the one in six Melburnians who already live here, as well as … the extra one million residents we will take on in the next 30 years.
“Our region’s lack of transport will become a significant burden for both the state and the nation.” However, some have welcomed the rail proposal. Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said he was looking forward to the “super hub” at Sunshine station. “The super hub has the potential to play a pivotal role in creating an efficient, sustainable and smart suburb of the future,” Mr Luk said.

Toxic fire highlights chemical concerns Concerns have been raised about chemical storage in the wake of the West Footscray factory fire which sent toxic smoke over Melbourne’s west and shut down more than 50 schools and childcare centres last week. Emergency services were called to a fire at a warehouse near the corner of Somerville and Paramount roads just after 5am on Thursday. It took more than 17 hours to bring the inferno under control. Victoria Police’s Arson Squad is now investigating the cause of the blaze. On Friday, watch and act messages were in place for Altona East, Altona North, Brooklyn, Kingsville, Newport, South
Kingsville, Spotswood, Sunshine, Tottenham, West Footscray, Yarraville. The Environment Protection Authority and Melbourne Water on Friday warned people to avoid Stony Creek and Cruickshank Park in Yarraville due to toxic water run-off. Residents and traders on Thursday night were briefed by the MFB at two community meetings. A Yarraville resident told one meeting that factories in the industrial precinct in the area were a “time bomb waiting to happen”. “Why is no one monitoring the activities of these companies operating in this area? It’s a disgrace,” he said.
Former Greens MP and West Footscray resident of 30 years Colleen Hartland is calling for inspections of industrial warehouses, saying self-regulation did not work. A WorkSafe spokeswoman said there would be a blitz on site occupiers in the inner west this week. “Last financial year, WorkSafe issued 1175 notices ordering duty holders to improve their storage and handling of chemicals, or potentially face prosecution,” she said. The EPA is also warning people not to eat fish from the lower part of the Maribyrnong River, from the West Gate Bridge. Goya Dmytryshchak
The much anticipated Sunvale Community Park will be officially opened on Saturday, September 15. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the official opening is the culmination of a community push years in the making. “The opening of Sunvale Community Park will be a landmark celebration for the local community, who have worked long and hard to achieve this outcome,” Cr Giudice said. “This new park is the result of many years of community campaigning – the result being a beautiful green space for us to come together and celebrate. “We pride ourselves on being a ‘community first’ council. This is what being ‘community first’ is all about: working together and creating a shared space where everyone in our community can feel welcome.” The $3.65 million dollar project includes a skate park, play spaces (including water play), a large shelter for gatherings and events, artworks created by local Aboriginal artists and 100 additional trees. The park is the 100th park to be developed under the council’s Creating Better Parks Policy and Plan. To mark the 100th park upgrade the council will give away 100 trees to Brimbank residents at the opening, which will run from 11am-2pm. The free event will include live music, face-painting, children’s entertainment, skating and fitness demonstrations. A barbecue and coffee will also be supplied. Tate Papworth

Development not safe as houses By Tate Papworth The Keilor Park townhouse development looks set to undergo an official review. The proposal, which includes 72 townhouses on the site of the former Keilor Park Primary School, has drawn the local community’s ire. The Keilor Park Community Group was formed to fight the development and wants the site to be kept for community use. James Gevergizian, of the Keilor Park Community Group, said the community would continue to push for a resolution.
“There’s 870 families living in Keilor Park,” he said. “We need facilities for the community and believe this site should be retained for community use.” Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll last month wrote to the Minister for Major Projects Jacinta Allan requesting the project be reviewed. “I have had many conversations with locals about the proposal and given their concern I strongly recommend that the proposal be reviewed, mindful that 72 townhouses is not acceptable,” Mr Carroll wrote.
‘‘
This site should be retained for community - James Gervergizian use
’’
“I want to see Development Victoria work with locals for a development of which the Keilor Park community can be proud.” The project will likely go ahead in a reduced capacity, which is a long way off the Keilor Park Community Group’s desire to have the site retained for community use.
Mr Carroll said the process to manage former school sites needed an overhaul. “I think the state government needs to get better with how we deal with former school sites,” he said. “This one lay empty for 10 years and the community got used to it being a park.” Mr Carroll wants the number of dwellings planned for the development to be cut and that it be a mix of both single and double storey dwellings. Further consideration to barbecue areas and children’s facilities will also be given.
Birth of an edgy sound His first release, Holding Hands with the Sun, reached No.1 on the Triple J Unearthed electronic charts, stayed in the top 10 for six weeks, and the video was also played on Rage during their 25th anniversary celebrations. Nigido said the success of that release was a real thrill. “It was awesome,” he said. “The project being dark and alternative, I didn’t know how people were going to take to it, but the feedback has been really positive.” While recording the new EP, The Art of Turning a Page, Nigido became a father. “That’s probably part of the reason it’s taken so long, but it’s also brought some new themes into the music which I really like,” he said. “Basically, it’s about moving forward, new chapters of life and all that, but the music still has that alternative edge.”
(Shawn Smits)
After a lifetime in music, and 11 years working on his solo project, West Sunshine artist Peter Nigido is ready to release his new EP. Nigido, 35, has previously played in bands that have supported prominent artists such as The Temper Trap, but it is his move to his solo project and the chance to put his own personal touch on his art that is exciting him now. “For years I was drumming in bands, and writing where I could,” he said. “I’ve always steered towards alternative music and had electronic music around me, so that’s where I’m coming from with my music,” he said. “I recorded a few of my own tracks, but it took me a long time to get the confidence to release my music under my own name. “It’s not too self-indulgent I don’t think, so hopefully people will listen to it and come up with their own interpretations of what it is about.”

A winning formula Copperfield College students have turned their school into a giant science laboratory. Students from across the school gathered for the school’s second science fair. Copperfield College’s Belinda Palladino said last month’s fair was a celebration of all things science. “It was a fantastic day – the gym was full of kids from across the college who had entered a variety of exhibits,” she said. “We had students exhibit robotics and potato power electricity, we had students who had created lie detector tests, water filtration, discovery of atoms and criminal minds,” she said. Ms Palladino said the year 12 students provided a special project for the audience.
Lead foot nabbed
“The year 12 students showed how bacteria and penicillin work and how penicillin targets certain bacteria,” she said. While the day was about having fun, Ms Palladino said there was an important message behind it all. “It was about students having to explain what they created, what it does, and how it can benefit us in the future,” she said. It was really embraced by all the students – there were plenty of prizes and special mentions. “This was our second year doing it and I have to be honest, it was a lot bigger than last year – it exceeded all expectations. I dare say it’ll be even bigger next year.” Tate Papworth
Brimbank Highway Patrol has nabbed a driver travelling at almost twice the speed limit near a school in Delahey last week. Police clocked a Mazda Tribute allegedly travelling at 119km/h in a 60km/h zone on Taylors Road about 12.30pm on August 27. Police intercepted the vehicle and impounded it for 30 days. The driver, a 22-year-old Burnside Heights man, is expected to be charged on summons with speed-related offences. Soccer growth fuels pitch report By Ewen McRae Brimbank is in desperate need of more soccer pitches, according to a new report. Football Federation Victoria’s State Football Facilities strategy to 2026, released last week, outlines the state’s areas most in need of additional facilities as the sport grows. On projected growth levels, the report says, Brimbank could need an additional 19 pitches by 2026 to keep up with demand. Greater Geelong is the only local government area the report says requires more pitches (21).
According to the report, there will be about 3400 registered players in Brimbank in 2026 if the sport continues to grow at the current level of 1.1 per cent, meaning an additional 12 pitches would be required. But the federation said participation levels could increase by as much as five per cent in the next eight years, meaning there could be about 5500 players and a need for 19 additional pitches. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said that while the council was investing heavily in new facilities, more needed to be done.
“While we’ve been investing heavily, a significant amount more is needed to make sure all existing facilities are suitable for use, are being used to their full potential and meet the needs of all user groups,” Cr Giudice said. “We’re currently developing a second sports ground at Bon Thomas Reserve in Deer Park, which will be ready for use in the 2019 winter season. “The additional sports ground, with new flood lighting, will open up the space for year round use for men’s, women’s and junior
sport. We are also in the process of planning for new sports grounds and associated facilities at Green Gully Reserve in Keilor Downs.” Both the Football Federation Victoria report and the council’s Sports Facility Development Plan identify a need for a regional multi-sport facility at Sydenham Park. In the short term, the council said it would complete five sports lighting upgrades at soccer reserves in 2018-19 and a further three in 2019-20 to increase capacity at those venues.
Game on in Brimbank Brimbank schools will receive more than $70,000 in sports gear to help encourage the next generation of budding athletes. Coles will make the donations in coming weeks as part of the company’s Sports for Schools program. About 60 primary and secondary schools in the area will receive gear, which will include cricket and softball bats, footballs, basketballs, javelins, hockey sticks, skipping ropes, racquets, first-aid kits and nets. Brimbank schools were among more than 7000 schools across Australia that participated in the program, which was held between February and April. Springside College in Caroline Springs will receive the most sports equipment after collecting more than 96,000 vouchers. Coles state general manager Grant Shelton said the company was delighted to be delivering sports equipment to local schools.
“We’re really impressed by the way the local community has got behind the program by collecting so many vouchers for their school,” he said. “We hope the new sports equipment will result in a lot of healthy, active fun for school kids in Brimbank.” For every $10 spent at Coles, customers received one Sports for Schools voucher, with nearly 1.9 million vouchers collected in Brimbank. The company is expected to give away about $10 million worth of sports gear across the nation as part of the program. Tate Papworth

An ice addict who murdered his partner in a squat house and then stole her bank card in an effort to get more money for drugs has been jailed for 25 years. The Supreme Court heard that Phuc Thien Tang bashed Hoa Thi Huynh with a vacuum cleaner pipe and stabbed her in the face with a samurai sword in the early hours of September 7 last year, during an argument about his drug use in the St Albans house where they were squatting. Tang then changed his clothes, hid Ms Huynh’s bag in the garage and took her bank card to an ATM, where he tried to withdraw cash but was unsuccessful. He was arrested days later in Richmond. In the weeks before the murder, Tang had been bailed over allegations he used the sword and an imitation pistol to threaten a man Ms Huynh had been in a brief relationship with. Tang also allegedly threatened the man’s niece the following day. Justice Lesley Taylor jailed the 50-year-old for at least 20 years before he is eligible for parole after he had pleaded guilty to murder. He and Ms Huynh, 44, who was known as Lina, had been in an on-off relationship for five years. “The murder of Lina Huynh was a savage and vicious crime,” Justice Taylor told Tang in the Supreme Court. “In a sustained attack you used a metal pole to beat the woman you professed to have loved and who was defenceless until she was, at least, unconscious.”
The attack was a most serious example of family violence, the judge said, and warranted denunciation with an emphasis on condemnation and deterring others from similar offending. “The murder of an intimate partner is nothing less than detestable,” she said. Tang told police he injected ice at another house in St Albans before the murder and “whacked” Ms Huynh because she was “nagging” him about his drug use. He admitted he knew the drug heightened his anger and caused a loss of control and he shouldn’t have returned home until its effects wore off. Tang has had drug addictions dating back to his early 20s when he first used heroin, and a 20-year criminal history, mostly related to thefts to support his habits. The former refugee has been diagnosed with HIV and is set to plead guilty to threatening the man and his niece. Justice Taylor acknowledged Tang pleaded guilty but found his ice use to be an aggravating factor, rather than explanatory, given he knew its dangers. His “callous, cowardly” behaviour afterwards reflected he had “no regard for anything except your own interests”, she said. His remorse came much later. Ms Huynh worked at a restaurant in Chinatown and her death was felt deeply by her two adult sons, the court heard, who missed the ordinary interactions with their mother and shared a profound sadness she wouldn’t be there for their life milestones. “They are, as one said, ‘broken and miserable’,” Justice Taylor said.

By Tate Papworth A Keilor landmark could soon be lost to the community. The owner of the former Christ Church Anglican has tried to lease the building to Brimbank council on numerous occasions, but says that after six years he’s had enough. “I’ve contacted real estate agents and instructed them to find a buyer,” he said. “I’ve been trying to get the council to take this up for six years and I can’t keep going with it.” He said the decision hasn’t been made lightly. “This building is critically important to the

people of Keilor – they’re losing a piece of their identity if this goes to private developers,” he said. “The council go on about preserving history and heritage, but they seem totally disinterested in preserving this.” The heritage-listed building’s owner said the council would be given first opportunity to purchase the church. “I’d prefer it to go to the council, but if they knock it back it’ll go to developers and be lost to the community forever,” he said. Keilor Historical Society president Susan Jennison said it was a sad outcome for the people of Keilor. “We’re desperately sad that an agreement couldn’t be reached and the situation has come to this,” she said. The 140-year-old building, on Church Street in Keilor, was purchased 10 years ago, but has been sitting empty for six years.

40-year lease, but it caused such a stink that we walked away,” he said. “Then we had a GP who wanted to use it, but that was also knocked back after complaints … more recently, a person wanted to use it as a wellness centre and that got about 12 objections.”
The owner has had numerous offers to lease the space, but earlier this year he told Star Weekly neighbouring residents had proven a stumbling block. “Allison Monkhouse funeral directors were really interested in it and wanted to take up a

Leisure centre’s sign of support By Ewen McRae Brimbank council is calling on the community to support the revamp of St Albans Leisure Centre by signing a new pledge wall. The wall, in the centre’s foyer, is a way for centre users, community members and the wider public to show their support for the development of the much-loved but now dated facility. Councillors, state politicians and advocates for the upgrade were among the first to add their names to the wall, with mayor Margaret Giudice saying it would show governments and investors how much support there is for the
project. “We know our community is getting excited about our plans for St Albans Leisure Centre, and rightly so,” Cr Giudice said. “The current leisure centre is old and tired and desperately needs to be replaced. “We want to show the state and federal governments just how much support this project has in the community to help our efforts to attract investment. “We’re planning to create a world-class health and wellbeing hub that will play a key role in delivering better social and health outcomes for the community – centred around a state-of-the art leisure and aquatic centre. It
will be a landmark project for Brimbank and the region.” The council has confirmed the new centre will include two water slides, a 51.5-metre pool, a leisure/learn-to-swim program pool, a warm-water program pool with adjoining spas, water play unit and splash pad, dry and steam saunas, a 24-hour gym, group fitness/ function rooms and a wellness centre including a community program room. The council estimates replacing the leisure centre with a health and wellbeing hub will cost more than $53 million. It has been lobbying state and federal governments to attract an investment of $25 million for the project.

New priest settles in The Greek Orthodox community of St Albans has welcomed a new priest. Father Irinaios was appointed to he position in May and has spent the months since getting to know the community. It’s been a rapid rise for Father Irinaios, who is just 23 years old. He said although he’s young, he feels like he’s found his calling. “I finished high school and went off to Sydney to study theology. After that I went to Greece and stayed with a very holy elder and it made it evidently clear to me that this is my calling and it’s what I want to do with myself,” he said. “Upon returning to Australia I was given the opportunity to come to this historic church. “It’s been amazing, I feel absolutely complete. My ambition, even as a little boy, was to get in the priesthood and I feel like everything I’ve wanted is coming to fruition.”
Father Irinaios grew up in Brunswick and said the move to Brimbank has been an amazing experience. “It’s been a feeling I’ve never experienced before,” he said. “This is a really solid, well-built community and it’s been really welcoming.” He said he was pleasantly surprised with how diverse the church is. “Our church is a very multicultural one,” he said. “It represents 10 nationalities, which is unusual for Greek churches – we’re a Greek Orthodox church, but we’re here for everybody.” Tate Papworth Father Irinaios is the new priest at the Greek Orthodox Church in St Albans. Take-off time for scholarships By Tate Papworth Young people in and around Brimbank will be the beneficiaries of a partnership set to create about 500 scholarships. Melbourne Airport is renewing its $440,000 partnership with Western Chances to provide scholarships for a further three years. Talented and motivated tertiary and high school students facing financial barriers and living in Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham will be eligible for the scholarships.
Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said he was proud to support the program. “Melbourne Airport is pleased to partner with such an effective community program that supports and motivates talented young people living in Melbourne’s west,” he said. “The scholarship program provides funding for items that make a real impact, ranging from text books and access to tutoring, to funding public transport and materials related to individual education needs, such as laptops.” Western Chances chief executive Rhyll
Dorrington said she was pleased to see the partnership continue. “From donating money in 2008 in lieu of Christmas cards, to significant multi-year financial and pro-bono support, Western Chances is one of the most fortunate not-for-profit organisations in Victoria to be backed by our nation’s premier airport,” she said. “We feel so proud that in partnership, Western Chances and Melbourne Airport have achieved outstanding results over the past 10 years supporting hundreds of young people.”
Western Chances board member Celia Tran, is a former scholarship recipient, said the initiative had allowed her to thrive. “Western Chances gave me the financial support needed to succeed in my studies,” she said. “When I received my scholarship, I felt really proud and I was happy to be able to relieve my family of stress associated with purchasing text books, a laptop and participation in excursions. “I am now living the dream and give back where I can through volunteering.”
Butterflies get booked From a simple poem, big things have grown. In 2004, Monika Athanasiou wrote a poem about swallowing butterflies. She’d heard about a man, George, who had published his own book and arranged to meet him so she could pick his brain about how he did it. “I’d heard about this man who had published his own book and I really wanted to meet him,” she said. “We found we had so much in common that one coffee became two, which became five, then 10 and here we are today.” The pair and the poem have come a long way since that night. Now husband and wife, George and Monika have turned the poem into a children’s book, called I Think I Have Swallowed Butterflies. The story follows a boy who goes on a trip to a zoo with his school class, only to leave feeling as though he’d swallowed butterflies.
italia Club
George said the story could connect with readers on a number of levels. “For some kids, this book will simply be a story about going to the zoo with their class, for other kids it’ll be about issues like anxiety and shyness,” he said. He said it was teaching kids that everybody gets butterflies in their stomach. “Hopefully, this encourages them to be more confident,” he said Con Constantinou was enlisted to illustrate the book. “I really liked the poem and the fact it was about emotions and children discovering their own emotions and being OK with them,” he said. The book will be launched at the Panarcadian Association building in North Melbourne on Sunday, September 16, from 3pm. Tate Papworth

Recent State Government initiatives to deal with flood prone land will be used as a basis for ensuring that the development of a catchment for the Maribyrnong River receives top priority. The City of Sunshine is expected to strongly lobby with the Government because it believes a catchment would minimise the danger to people and property in the lower reaches of the river.
The days of children playing cowboys and indians or cops and robbers may be over. Toy guns are becoming a no no. Upside Realty, an Australian-owned real estate agency with a low fee and no commissions, is taking on the industry by shining a spotlight on common myths spruiked by other agents. Upside Realty chief executive Adam Rigby is keen to address what he refers to as “self-serving information peddled to property owners”. “Some commission-based real estate agents would have you believe that their approach equates to higher sale prices and more motivated agents, which may be far from the truth,” Mr Rigby says. “Upside Realty is here to set the record straight – selling a home or investment property can be a stressful time, so it’s incredibly important people are armed with the right information.” Mr Rigby identifies what he believes are the top three misconceptions agents may encourage clients to believe. 1. Paying a commission means your agent is pushing for a higher sale price “In fact, it’s quite the opposite,” Mr Rigby asserts. “Every additional day it takes for a property to sell delays the income of a commission-based agent, ultimately decreasing hourly rates. “This can mean an agent will look to close a sale as soon as possible and move on –
regardless of whether it’s the best option for a property owner.” 2. Commissions equate to agent motivation “One of the most common industry misconceptions is that commission-based agents are more dedicated than those who work for a flat price agency,” Mr Rigby says. “Like many sales roles, agents employed by Upside Realty earn a salary with bonuses awarded on performance. This means Upside agents are motivated by these incentives, as well as job satisfaction, career progression, ongoing training opportunities, freeing them up to support clients all the way to the finish line.” 3. Real estate shop fronts are the only mark of reliability “Before the digital age, most buyers saw property listings at local real estate offices and agents had their own network of buyers and sellers,” Mr Rigby says. “Now buyers search online and agents have access to extensive local market data. Yes, it’s still important to work with experienced agents, but they don’t need a shopfront in your suburb to get the best price for your property. “We believe Upside is the way real estate should be. Upside’s standard is other agents’ ‘extras’.” For more information, visit upside.com.au

MY BRIMBANK Dinh Tran has devoted his life to helping the community. The Sunshine local spoke with Tate Papworth about Brimbamk and the Vietnamese community.
I’ve lived in Brimbank since 1999. I went to school in the area and have lived in Sunshine for a number of years. What do you like best about the area? It’s a quiet area. Sunshine isn’t as busy as places closer to the city. I really enjoy walking around the area and taking it all in. There’s a lot of development happening in Sunshine too and it’s starting to become a very attractive area. What could be done better? The library is at a really great location. It’s open until late so I’d love to see more programs offered out of it – maybe even training courses to support people. What changes have you seen in Brimbank during your time here? It’s a very multicultural area now. I know there’s a lot of Vietnamese people especially. We have about 32,000 Vietnamese people here.
Tell us about your connection to the Vietnamese community. I’m the deputy vice president for the Vietnamese Community in Australia Victorian chapter. We do a lot of work in Brimbank. It’s a very interesting area. We offer a range of programs, which include language classes, youth programs and help new arrivals overcome barriers, which can be as simple as helping them fill out paperwork. And that’s not the only community work you do. I’m also involved with Community Plus’ skill reconnect program. In my role as skill reconnect coach, I work with people aged between 17-64 who have been disengaged from education or employment for 12 months or more. What’s the most challenging part of the role? One of the main challenges is long-term disengagement, so I have to stay on top helping people update their learning and achievement plans.

a split-system. The main bedroom, at the front of the house, has floating floorboards, an en suite and a walk-in robe with door. Walk past the lounge room to the kitchen and meals area. The kitchen has 12 doors of storage, an oven, dishwasher and plenty of good bench space. The meals area is welcoming and adjoins a multi-purpose area that has sliding door access to outdoor spaces.
Two more bedrooms are truly huge and have built-in robes and views of the large backyard, currently a blank canvas awaiting re-invention. There is a central study with french multi-paned doors, floating floorboards and good light. Currently set up as a bedroom, it has through-access to the main bedroom. The double garage has an over-height roof, so could be re-configured to house a boat or caravan.

Second half blitz seals win By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets have survived a tough examination in the TAC Cup wildcard round to advance to week two of the finals on the back of a 38-point win over Eastern Ranges on Sunday. The Jets were slow out of the blocks, trailing by 10 points at quarter-time and 16 at half-time. There were concerns for the Jets, but coach Torin Baker was not reaching for the panic button because his side had shown signs of life in the second term. “Our boys certainly got a bit of a shock with the way Eastern started, Baker said. “They played the game on their terms in the first quarter, won a lot of footy around the stoppage and controlled the ball. “We started to make waves in the second quarter, which was comforting, so I don’t think there was too much panic. Any fears of an upset were put to rest when the Western Jets delivered a second half to remember. The Jets roared to life with a five-goal-to-nil third quarter, which was part of a nine-goal-to-one second half blitz. “Our boys were fantastic in the third quarter, Baker said. “It was certainly up there with some of our better footy. “We had some leaders really lift in the third quarter and the rest of the guys got behind them. Captain Xavier O’Halloran and rapidly rising onballer Connor Thar instigated the comeback for the Western Jets with their play from the midfield. Thar has been one of the bolters into draft
contention in the second half of the season and showed why with a stellar performance. O’Halloran’s leadership qualities and football ability stood up in a pressure situation. “They were both really good in that third quarter, Baker said. “They won us a lot of clearances and then the ball stayed in our forward half a fair period of time. Thar’s form continues to draw praise. The Werribee Districts product came second in the Morrish Medal vote count on Sunday night with 16 votes, just two behind winner Liam Stocker of the Sandringham Dragons. “He’s had a terrific year, Baker said of Thar. “We calculated that he’s been in our best players 13 out of the 16 games. “He’s had a very consistent season, but particularly his last 10 games, he’s gone from strength to strength. Emerson Jeka was the Western Jets most dangerous forward on the day. Jeka kicked three goals and took an impressive one-handed mark. Daniel Pantalleresco chimed in with three goals, while Cassius White added two. “There was a combination of things that occurred to help get the game on our terms, Baker said. “One of them was changing up a bit of the forward structure in that second half, which gave us a bit of a different look up forward. “Emerson’s ability to lead up and provide a contest was very good. It was nice to see him get some reward in the second half. Spencer Johnson’s run and carry was another feature of the Jets play.
Hamish Murphy gets some serious elevation for the Western Jets on Sunday. (Marco De Luca)

SPORT Blues outgunned on a trying day Keilor will have to do it the hard way if it is to win through to the Essendon District Football League premier division grand final. Aberfeldie snuck home with two late goals to down the Blues in a semi-final on Saturday at Windy Hill. In trying conditions, the two sides traded the lead throughout the day. Scores were level at quarter-time, with the Gorillas leading by one point at the other two breaks. Keilor hit the front early in the last quarter, but the Gorillas responded with two goals. There was no late comeback from the Blues, with the Gorillas winning 7.9 (51)-6.7 (43). Blues coach Mick McGuane said it was a match that could have gone either way and that a couple of moments decided the outcome.
“It was trying conditions and a tough day at the office,” he said. “It rained all day and it was slippery, hence the scoreline. There was more than 100 inside 50s for 13 goals. “They just happened to be in front at the end. They kicked two goals in two minutes after the 20 minutes of the last quarter and that was the difference.” Dean Galea kicked two goals for the Blues, while Dylan Joyce, Andrew Browne and Billy Iles were named their best. The loss was compounded by injuries to Jay White (hamstring) and Kieran Bell (AC joint). McGuane said neither played any part in the second half and at this stage looked set to miss this coming week’s action.
The Blues will face Strathmore in a preliminary final. In their semi-final, Strathmore defeated Greenvale 13.12 (90)-7.8 (50). It was a tough weekend all round for the Blues, with their reserves losing their semi-final to Greenvale and the under-19s losing their semi-final to Strathmore. As with the seniors, the reserves have a second chance and will play in a preliminary final this weekend. In division 1, Tullamarine defeated Craigieburn to win through to the grand final. In division 2, Roxburgh Park is the first team into the grand final. East Sunbury will play the Northern Saints in the preliminary final. Tara Murray
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ At the elite level of sport no one wants to hang on for that last season where it becomes bleedingly obvious the carnival is over. I am sure those thoughts would have been racing through Dale Morris’ mind in recent months as he evaluated his future. In signing a one-year contract for 2019, the elder statesman of the Bulldogs has made many people happy. Unquestionably one of the nicest blokes to ever don the red, white and blue jumper, he is also one of the fiercest competitors and most durable players in the club’s history. His passion for the game and the club shines like a beacon and it will be great to see him running around again in the famous number 38. ■ John Lamont has moved on from Avalon Airport Oval after five years as senior coach and three before that in a development capacity via the North Melbourne alignment. Lamont finished on a high, with his side winning four of the last six games of the year and his final duty will be naming the 2018 Bruce Montgomery Trophy winner later this month. John has wonderful people skills and in the cut-throat environment of elite football, it’s a trait that goes a long way. That, along with his football know-how, will make him a wanted commodity. ■ The search for players is a constant for any football club and there will be many players contemplating their next move in the coming weeks and months. Spotswood Football Club Life Member Bill Bond is on a sub-committee of the Torquay FC which is entering a senior women’s team next year and it is looking for coaches, players and volunteers. If you are making a sea change and want to be involved, contact admin@torquaytigers.com.au
By Tara Murray This year’s title might be the sweetest of them all for City West Falcons coach Marg Lind. With a young playing group and players missing games because of Australian Netball League commitments, Lind had said all along that making finals was a bonus. The Falcons found form in the second half of the season and moved into the top four in the final round, then stepped it up at the right time. On Sunday, all the hard work came together when they defeated Geelong Cougars in a 56-48 win to claim the club’s fifth title in 10 seasons. “I reckon this is nearly the best,” Lind said afterwards. “We’ve had the most struggle as a club, coming to terms with ANL and having to play young kids all over the shop. “We’ve trained really hard, but weren’t seeing results midway. “There’s a real inability to give up.” The Falcons started nervously on Sunday, but settled to lead by a goal at quarter-time. From about midway through the second quarter they took control of the game. Lind said she thought nerves played a part. “Our attack end tried very hard to give them a big lead. We weren’t letting the ball go,” she said.

“We tried a couple of different strategies and probably complicated things. “At quarter-time we said [let’s] go back to what had been working for us.” After half-time the Falcons took control of the game and extended their lead. The Cougars made a number of changes to counteract the Falcons, but could not stop them.
Lind said the playing group was hungry and made the most of the one per centers. Defender Zoe Davies was named best on court. Lind said she was proud of Davies, who got the nod ahead of Maddy Balson in the second defensive role. “If they went with the smaller line-up we were going with Zoe, if they went with Ruby [Horton], we were going taller with Maddy,” Lind said. “For Zoe, it’s all about mentality and about the self belief. We’ve had a lot of conversations over the last couple of weeks, she had doubted herself. “She deserves to be there.” While the Falcons used just seven players in the grand final, Lind was quick to praise the efforts of the whole squad. She said without those players on the bench who took on a bigger workload earlier in the season, they wouldn’t have got where they did. After the match, Lind revealed that skipper Maggie Lind probably shouldn’t have played. Maggie had a partially torn plantar fascia and was in a lot of pain. Lind said with such a young playing group the future looked bright. “It will be tough again next year,” she said. “We’re heading in the right direction and we’ve rebuilt the culture and we’ve tried to get a different mindset.”

Falcons’ fight for title
■ I don’t think local and second tier footy cash in enough on the opportunity they have with the AFL bye weekend. Suburban leagues and VFL should fill some of the space normally given to AFL, but they have to do some work to get that space and airtime. In our backyard the Deer Park story is a beauty. If it wins and makes it six straight, what a dynasty. If it gets beaten it is the underdog story of the decade. Either way it is far more interesting than a large slab of what was written last week. If the bye week stays, local clubs should do some work to get some much-needed and deserved publicity.

Stallions’ promotion all part of an ambitious plan Brimbank Stallions have hit the repeat button, earning promotion for a third straight season in the Football Federation Victoria soccer. Three years ago, the Stallions were a state league 4 club, but Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Cairnlea at Club Italia Sporting Club catapulted them into state league 1. Stallions coach Andrew Marth said it was another step on the club’s ambitious journey to become a National Premier League club. “It’s a huge achievement,” he said. “The club is up and coming, the facilities are superb, we’ve signed some good quality players and it does enhance our opportunities to progress. “They’ve got a huge junior development program going with Juventus … it’s a huge positive for us to get promoted and go to the next level. Our objective is to get to the NPL, get up there with the big boys, so to speak.” There was plenty on the line when Brimbank and Cairnlea locked horns – it was billed as
the match that would determine which side was promoted with ladder leader Whittlesea United. Brimbank totally bossed the first half and was leading 2-0 at the break. Marth lamented the margin, suggesting it was closer than it should have been. “We should’ve been up three or four at half-time,” he said. “I thought we totally controlled the game and dominated. Unfortunately, our finishing was not where my expectations were.” Brimbank held the lead throughout the second half, but could not begin to exhale until Ashley Webster scored in the 86th minute. It was Webster’s second goal of the game and 24th of the season, stamping him as the top striker in the division. “He’s an exceptional striker,” Marth said. “The system we play maximises his goalscoring opportunities and he doesn’t miss too many.”
Raffael Origlia kick-started Brimbank’s big win with the opening goal at 32 minutes and Webster’s first goal came seven minutes later. Despite the Stallions’ dominance, Marth could not enjoy the game until the final whistle was blown. “It was just a relief,” he said. “It’s been a long season and the boys thoroughly deserved what we’ve achieved with one week out from the end of the season. It’s really good.” Brimbank celebrated its promotion hard after the game. But Marth is greedy and wants more. There is a chance the Stallions could go up as champions if they beat Hume United away on Saturday and top side Whittlesea United draws or loses to Geelong Rangers. “I’m a person that wants to win every game and next week is no exception,” Marth said. Lions kick-start campaign By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park had to overcome more than just one hurdle to record a win in week one of the Western Region Football League division 1 finals. If an in-form Hoppers Crossing was not enough, the Lions had to contend with a number of injuries at just the wrong time. The Lions were still good enough to kick-start their finals campaign in style with a 48-point win over Hoppers at Avalon Airport Oval in Werribee on Saturday. Lions coach Marc Bullen said he was proud of his team’s resilience. “It was an absolutely courageous effort today from the boys,” he said. “To win the way we did and hit the line the way we did was a fantastic effort.” The mishaps began long before the ball was bounced at 2.15pm. The morning of the game, James Wong pulled out for Deer Park, then Tim Knight withdrew after an issue in the warm-up. Sohrob Ismail and Paul Bower were injured during the game, leaving the Lions two down. It caught the Lions on the hop. “Young Mickey Nicholls played reserves and then had to rush to the changerooms before the bounce to play a second game,” Bullen said. “He did a fantastic job, the young fella at wing and half-back.” Not surprisingly, Deer Park started the game slowly. The Lions trailed by two at quarter-time, but wrestled the lead back by half-time. Eventually, the Lions’ upper echelon of players lifted and led the way for their side. The Lions kicked five goals to one in the third quarter to open up a healthy 29-point lead. Hoppers Crossing kicked the first goal of the fourth quarter, but when Kevin Klix responded with a major of his own, the Lions knew they were on their way to victory. Kwame McHarg was outstanding for Deer Park. His willingness to cover the length of the field inspired his teammates. “He played predominantly forward, but he worked his backside off,” Bullen said. The match-winning move for Deer Park was parking renowned ruckman Chris Stewart in the forward line for the most part. He finished with five goals. Stewart was only able to be the Lions forward presence because of the tireless work of Scott Greenhough, who took on the bulk of the ruck work and did so with aplomb. Deer Park will carry its double chance through to the second week of the finals. The Lions will face Altona in the second semi-final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday with the winner to advance to the grand final. In the elimination final, Spotswood defeated Werribee Districts by 23 points to keep its season alive. The Woodsmen will play Hoppers Crossing in a cut-throat semi-final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday.

In division 2, Parkside ended North Footscray’s season in a 13-point win at Burbank Oval. The Magpies have advanced to the preliminary final, where they will play Point Cook for the right to face Yarraville Seddon in the grand final. Yarraville Seddon beat Point Cook by 28 points in the major semi.
60 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 4, 2018
In division 3, Wyndham Suns lived to fight another day after a 58-point win over Braybrook. The Suns will face off with local rivals Tarneit in the preliminary final. Point Cook Centrals are grand final-bound after beating Tarneit by 17 points.

Cavalier pain escalates in dismal loss The unthinkable has happened – Green Gully is headed for the National Premier League relegation play-off, where it will strive to save its top-flight existence. The Cavaliers needed only a draw against Kingston City on the final day of the season on Sunday to avoid the relegation play-off, but they went down 3-1 in a miserable display at Green Gully Reserve. Only eight weeks ago, Green Gully was fifth and in the finals mix. The Cavaliers have since gone into freefall, losing seven of their past eight games to fall to third last. The Stephen Downes-coached team has a long wait for the September 23 play-off at AAMI Park while the NPL 2 clubs jostle for the right to tackle it. Maybe the extended break between games will help the Cavaliers regain their lost form. It was a tough week for the Melbourne Knights. The Knights had their destiny in their own hands at the start of the week, but consecutive losses saw them bow out of the finals race. A near fatal blow to their top six hopes came on Monday night when they lost to Bulleen Lions, the cellar dwellers. The knock-out for the Knights came in a 2-1 loss to Dandenong Thunder on Sunday. In NPL 2 west, St Albans Saints were hammered 5-0 by already promoted Altona Magic. The Saints had a chance to seal their ticket to the promotion play-off, but will have to wait another week. A win over Brunswick City in the final round on Saturday will lock the Saints into second spot. But if the Saints draw or lose, they will come under threat from third-placed North Geelong Warriors, who have an easy game, on paper, against Ballarat City. Sunshine George Cross’ last game in the NPL was a sour one – it lost 4-2 to Melbourne Victory. The Georgies have been relegated to state league 1 for next season. In NPL women’s, Calder United had a comfortable 4-0 win over Box Hill United. Calder is still in the hunt for the premiers plate heading into the final round, trailing South Melbourne by just one point. Calder will need to beat third-last Heidelberg United on Saturday and hope South Melbourne loses or draws with third-placed Bulleen Lions. Lance Jenkinson

MOTOR
A new Odyssey unfolds By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring
AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE
Honda Odyssey has been on sale in Australia since 1995 when the people mover was the vehicle of choice for those needing to transport more than five. For most of that period it’s been a three-way tussle between Odyssey, Toyota Tarago and Kia Carnival, although the SUV phenomenon has taken many sales away from the segment. Honda made a bit of a gamble in its third and fourth generation model by lowering Odyssey’s height to make it look and perform more like a station wagon, but with the arrival of the gen-five model in 2014 it reverted to its previous height of just under 1.7 metres. The MY2018 Odyssey gave it an external facelift, an upgraded interior and improved driver assist technology.

Passive features (crash mitigation) are front, side and full-length curtain airbags with whiplash mitigation front seats; and Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering structure.
Driving
Styling
Two variants are offered, VTi and VTi-L, with the L standing for luxury rather than a long wheelbase as used elsewhere. VTi now has the aero front fascia design that was previously only available with higher spec VTi-L. It also has bright chrome surrounds for the new front foglights. Two new paint colours have also been introduced for the MY18 Odyssey – Cobalt Blue Pearlescent and Platinum White Pearlescent.
Interior
Odyssey VTi comes with eight seats while the more luxurious VTi-L has seven. The latter features twin buckets in place of the second-row bench in the VTi. The dashboard-mounted gearshift together with a pull-out storage tray and drink holders opens up the space between the front seats sufficiently to allow access to rear rows of seats.
Honda Odyssey is an attractive spacious and economical people mover. (Supplied)
Conventional access to the rear seats is made easy through powered sliding side doors
Engine / transmission
There is only one powertrain – a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol unit with peak power of 129 kW and top torque of 225 Nm at 4000 rpm. It drives through the front wheels using the greater efficiency of continuously variable transmission (CVT). Fuel consumption is listed at 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres; at 8.2 litres per
100 kilometres, we came reasonably close to during our test. These are impressive figures for a big seven-seater.
Safety
Active safety features (crash prevention) in the Odyssey VTi include ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; emergency stop signal; stability and traction control; hill start assist; daytime running lights; and tyre deflation warning.

In this era of crossover vehicles that attempt to be jacks of all trades, it’s nice to review a vehicle that has one clearly defined purpose – to provide spacious, comfortable and economical transport for more than five occupants. Although not necessarily the market leader in sales Honda Odyssey has long been the queen of its class; the MY18 update sees it remain so.

With its large glass areas all round Odyssey has a lovely airy feel inside and provides outstanding exterior visibility. Around town it behaves in a surprisingly sprightly manner; it cruises effortlessly on the motorway. The suspension generally copes well, but rough roads can cause it hassles at times. Handling really isn’t the reason for choosing a people mover, but Odyssey is safe and sure at higher than normal cornering speeds.
