Dancer finds his rhythm

(Marco De Luca)

A Brimbank breakdancer is rapidly gaining recognition as a rising star. Christian, who goes by the stage name Bboy Nonoy, recently took out first prize at the Melbourne High School Interschool Breakdance Competition. Christian said the win was a year in the making. “I did the competition last year and came second, so I really wanted to go one better this year,” he said. “About two weeks prior to the competition I was training every day after school at KSTAR studios in Ravenhall.” However the year 11 student at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College admits his dedication wasn’t always there. “I gave it [breakdancing] up for three years because I wasn’t feeling it, but decided I wanted to resume it last year,” he said. “I got a few awards and things started to change. My hunger has grown, I’m more motivated than ever and feel like I’ve grown as a person and dancer.” With his passion restored, Christian has big goals. “There’s a competition called Red Bull BC One, which is the top 16 dancers in the world. I want to compete in that before I turn 20.” He admits getting there will require a lot of work. “I’m going to Sydney this week for an under 18 competition which will hopefully be a stepping stone.” Tate Papworth

Hospital wait blowout By Tate Papworth Patients presenting at Sunshine Hospital face some of the longest wait times in the country. Just 71 per cent of emergency patients (those requiring treatment within 10 minutes) were treated on time in 2016-17, according to the federal government’s MyHospitals website. The average for medium metropolitan hospitals with an emergency department was 79 per cent. The gap widens for less urgent care. For

Sunshine patients requiring treatment within 30 minutes of arrival, 51 per cent were seen on time, compared to the average for similar hospitals of 65 per cent. Just 51 per cent of those requiring semi-urgent treatment at Sunshine (within 60 minutes) were seen on time, compared to the peer group average of 73 per cent. Non-urgent wait times (treatment recommended within 120 minutes) sat at 72 per cent, well below the peer group average of 90 per cent.

A Western Health spokesperson said Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department was being stretched. “Sunshine Hospital emergency department is one of the busiest in the state with more than 250 patients a day,” she said. “Sunshine Hospital is currently operating beyond its physical capacity, which means significant barriers to treating less urgent patients in the most timely way. “This is the reason the state government has agreed to fund significant expansion of

Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department. Until this occurs, Western Health continues to take all steps to minimise wait times.” The state government’s $29.6 million commitment to an upgraded emergency department will deliver an extra 31 treatment spaces in the emergency department, a separate children’s section, a medical imaging suite and an expanded administration area. Once complete, the hospital will have capacity to treat an extra 59,000 emergency patients every year.

College plans ground to a halt By Tate Papworth Sunshine College won’t be getting the revamped school it was promised, the state government has confirmed. A large chunk of $28 million funding for the college will be spent cleaning up asbestos found on site. The school had planned to consolidate its four campuses to two and build purpose-built classrooms at its Lachland Street campus. But asbestos removal will use up about $5.5 million of the budget.

The government has refused to provide additional funds. According to the state government, construction of three buildings at the west campus – the performing arts centre, the gym and the years 7-8 learning building – has been deferred. Sunshine College school council member Vin Ryan said the latest development had left “everyone flat”. He believed the clean-up costs would exceed the predicted $5.5 million. “The minister has advised the school that the

cost of removing asbestos will be $5.5 to $5.8 million, however the reality is that more money will have to be put aside to prepare the site,” Mr Ryan said. “There is a very likely possibility that rocks will need to be removed from the site and that the contractors will be seeking compensation for the delays. “What’s been really disappointing is that the Minister for Education James Merlino has been avoiding our questions.” Greens MP for Western Metropolitan Melbourne, Huong Truong, demanded

answers about the college’s funding shortfall in Parliament last week. She questioned why the government had not used the 2018-19 Victorian School Asbestos Program to pay for the asbestos removal. Star Weekly contacted Mr Merlino for comment and was referred to a department spokeswoman. “We are aware that schools such as Sunshine College would benefit from additional facilities however, we must continue to balance the needs of more than 1500 Victorian schools when making decisions,” she said.

Get ready for a hair-raising show Loud hair, colour and music will be all the rage in West Sunshine when students from Marian College present their production of Hairspray. The production, the first the college has held in years, will run from August 29 to September 1. The much-loved, family-friendly show captures the spirit and turmoil of 1962 Baltimore, Maryland through laughter, dance, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs. Marian College student Gabrielle plays Tracy Turnblad and said she’s thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“Being a part of the Hairspray production has been such an enjoyable and overwhelming experience,” she said. “Not only has being part of this production improved my singing, acting and dancing skills, it has also given me the opportunity to meet new people. “To be playing such an optimistic and lively personality who brings the stage to life has been beyond exciting.” Fellow cast member Meron is in her first year at the college and said the production has made the transition an enjoyable one.

“This production has meant so much to me as I was able to learn a huge number of things,” she said. “I’ve learnt how to … expand my singing abilities, learnt how to sing in a harmony and much more. “I am extremely excited about putting on this show but at the same time, I’m also a bit nervous – but as they say, the show must go on.” For tickets visit: www.trybooking.com/ book/event?eid=399191

The re-imagining of the St Albans Leisure Centre is a step closer to reality. Council last week confirmed the new centre would include two water slides, a 51.5-metre, 10-lane competition pool, a leisure/learn to swim program pool, a warm water program pool with adjoining spas, water play unit and splash pad, dry and steam saunas, a 24-hour gym, group fitness/function rooms, and a wellness centre including a community program room. Mayor Margaret Giudice said it was exciting to see the community feedback on the make-up of the new centre start to come to life. “We know the community is getting very excited about what we have planned for St Albans Leisure Centre,” Cr Giudice said. “We’ve now confirmed what leisure and aquatic features the community can look forward to enjoying in the upcoming development. “Each component has been selected considering information we’ve gathered over some time, including consultation undertaken as part of the 2014 feasibility study into the replacement of the centre, as well as looking at population and centre operational and leisure trends.” The centre will also have a cafe, multiple changerooms and a creche. The next step for the centre is appointing a design team. The council is also still searching for a commitment from state and federal governments to invest in the project, which is expected to cost more than $53 million. Ewen McRae

Plan for safe syringe disposal By Ewen McRae Brimbank council hopes a new strategy for removing discarded syringes will improve community safety. The council endorsed an action plan for syringe management at last week’s meeting, following a spike in the number of used syringes found across Brimbank over the past 12 months. In the 2016-17 financial year the council picked up 559 syringes in parks, reserves and public places. In the 2017-18 financial year that

number more than tripled, with 1999 syringes picked up. Requests from the public for the council to collect discarded syringes also increased in the past year, with 460 requests in 2017-18, compared to 290 in the previous 12 months. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said it was important for the council to counter the health and social harms associated with injecting drug use, including the problem of discarded syringes. “The use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs is a complex problem that has impacts

on both users and the wider community,” Cr Giudice said. “Council has been concerned with the number of improperly discarded syringes. “An important part of our drive to keep Brimbank safe will be working with other responsible authorities to improve planning

around alcohol and other drugs, as well as health services. “More accurate syringe distribution and disposal data from these authorities will help council to enhance its syringe retrieval processes.” Under the plan, the council will install more disposal units around the municipality, including in new public toilets, in “hotspots” and in council facilities which are accessible after hours. The council will also join service providers to make sure there is more education on how to dispose of syringes safely.

The group comprises of 15 musicians, who will play a mix of eastern and western instruments including the sitar, harmonium, cello, oud, tablas, guitar, darbouka, bass guitar and tamboura to produce the sounds of ancient India in a creative and modern form. Mr Shergill said the evening was a good opportunity to enjoy some music and support the cause. “At the centre of all this we’re raising money for juvenile diabetes, so any support would be great,” he said. Sunshine’s Jagdeep Shergill, a lawyer by trade, will play the tablas for Vedic Vibe at this year’s Fringe Festival. Mr Shergill has played the instrument for more than 20 years. “I started learning the instrument when I was 12 and I genuinely can’t remember a time where I wasn’t a drummer,” he said. “My teacher not only taught me how to play the instrument, but gave me great life advice along the way – it’s shaped the person I am today.” Mr Shergill and his group Vedic Vibe are encouraging audiences to take part in soul-nourishing chants, connect with deeper parts of themselves and help find a cure for children suffering from type 1 diabetes at the upcoming Fringe Festival. Ellen Arnott gives up her locks for the Leukemia Foundation.

Close shave booked in The warmer weather can’t come quickly enough for a group of staff at Victoria University Secondary College, after they shaved their heads for charity last week. The Kings Park school combined annual Book Week activities with a World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser for the Leukemia Foundation, hoping to raise more than $2000 in the process. Acting principal Sue Atzarakis said the day brought together several aspects of their school and what they stand for. “I think days like this really reflect our values as a school,” Ms Atzarakis said. “One of our values is strength in the community, and also aspiring to achieve, so combining some of the fun of book week and the literacy outcomes of that with some

fundraising for an important cause really tied in nicely. “We’ve been fundraising for this for a while, and with raffles on the day and a gold coin donation we’re hopeful we can raise a bit.” Ms Atzarakis said the school placed a high value on reading and the focus on it last week showed how important that is. “We know that students who read more achieve greater results at school, and it’s great to see the students dressed up as characters from their favourite books at this time every year.” College board president Ellen Arnott joined three staff members in shaving their heads at lunchtime on August 24. Drama takes leading role From Sydenham to stage and screen, it’s been a hell of a journey for actor Christopher Farrell. Farrell, 33, who is starring as Dr Rob Carson on Neighbours, grew up in Sydenham and East Keilor, where his dreams of an acting career took hold. “I think that whole area is one of the most beautiful, untapped resources that Melbourne has to offer,” Farrell said. “I think my passion for drama started when I was a young kid in Sydenham … movies were always a bit of an outlet for me. “Other kids wagged school to get up to mischief, but for me it was always to get into the cinema on my own. So it grew from there. “I remember me and a friend entered a competition called Class Clowns at the Comedy Festival, and we took out the Victorian final for that, so we got to work with guys like Peter Helliar and Carl Barron. And that day really made me feel like I’d found what I wanted to do in life – and that was perform.” Farrell said he “didn’t have the courage to take on drama school after high school”, so instead he did a nursing degree as a way of funding his drama pursuits. His passion led him to London, where he studied acting, worked as a crew member on film sets and began to build his professional network. Over the years he has worked alongside Oscar-winning cinematographer Andrew Lesnie (Lord of the Rings) and been mentored by former housemate Samuel Johnson (Secret Life of Us, Molly Molly) and Sarah Hallam (Wentworth). It’s all led him to his current role on Neighbours, but he sees plenty of growth ahead. “Even now I don’t feel like I’ve had my big break,” Farrell said.

“I’m a real believer in things happen for a reason … I was working on the Neighbours crew as the set nurse when my agent contacted me and said there was a small role that I might be right for. “So Dr Rob has fallen deeply for the character Amy Williams and that journey is going to

be an interesting one. I’m still hopeful I’ll be around for a while after this next run. “But I’m also dabbling in a couple of different things, so I’m always learning. “I haven’t given up on the opportunity to work in London or LA and New York if some things pan out.”

Residents fight former school development Keilor Park residents have lodged a petition objecting to Development Victoria’s plans for 46 Eliza Street. The petition was lodged with the Brimbank council at its August meeting and had 404 signatories. Development Victoria has proposed building 72 townhouses and a park on the site of the former Keilor Park Primary School. Residents turned out in force last month, packing out two information sessions to voice their displeasure with the plans. Residents said there were a number of issues with the proposal, including parking arrangements and adding traffic to an already congested area. Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll threw his support behind the community and has said he will advocate to reduce the number of houses slated for the site. “I’ll be writing to the minister and requesting that further community consultation be carried out,” Mr Carroll said. “I’ll also be seeking a reduction in the number of dwellings planned for the development. “The other thing I’ll be requesting is that the development be a mix of both single and double storey dwellings.” The council received the petition and will refer it to Development Victoria. Deputy blasts ‘racist’ speech By Ewen McRae Brimbank deputy mayor Daniel Allan has publicly rebuked Senator Fraser Anning’s maiden speech in Parliament, calling it ‘racist’ and ‘xenophobic’. Senator Anning caused an uproar with his speech on August 14, calling for an end to Muslim immigration to Australia, a return to the White Australia policy, while also using the term ‘final solution’ – a phrase most commonly associated with the Holocaust. Cr Allan, himself a Muslim-Australian, made a speech at last week’s council meeting where he condemned Senator Anning, and spoke of the hurt his remarks had caused in the

community. “Senator Fraser Anning’s maiden speech in Parliament was one of the most racist, xenophobic, Islamaphobic and pro white Australia speeches I’ve heard from an MP,” Cr Allan said. “As an Arab Australian Muslim, I understand how powerful, damaging and hurtful comments made and broadcast through TV, radio and social media are towards the Australian Muslim community and how important it is to call out this divisive, inflammatory and racist speech. “We know how vulnerable people – who are suffering with depression, anxiety, isolation and made to feel like an outsider – are those who are more likely to turn to crime due to

vilification and being ostracised. These are people who feel as though society does not care. “Brimbank is one of the most diverse and disadvantaged communities in Victoria, speeches such as those by Senator Anning show that unfortunately there are still underlying social issues and prejudice that exist. “We are proud to be Brimbank and we need to send a strong message that we stand together in the face of these racist, xenophobic and Islamaphobic comments and say that they don’t represent us and we will work towards building a better future through open and frank dialogue.” The council unanimously reconfirmed its commitment to an inclusive community.

The cloud of science Students at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College were walking on clouds last week. As part of the school’s Science Week activities, a year 11 chemistry class used dry ice to turn a classroom into a cloud. College science head of learning Marnie Bates said it was an opportunity to have some fun. “The idea is to give students something really fun to celebrate science,” she said. “The students loved the affect the dry ice has.” Ms Bates said she hoped the experiment would open the students eyes to bigger things. “We want students to be encouraged to get into science fields because there’s so many careers available,” she said. While the visual result of the experiment

was startling, Ms Bates said the science behind it is simple. “The science behind this is sublimation, which is when we have a solid going directly to a gas with no liquid phase,” she said. “The kids can come in and walk on ice and enjoy themselves in celebration of Science Week.” The school capped of its Science Week festivities with a year seven science fair. “Our students worked on a long term project investigating something they’d always wondered about science,” Ms Bates said. “Then we had a night where they brought their parents along and spoke to the public about their work.” Tate Papworth

Thumbs up for Brimbank council By Tate Papworth Community satisfaction with the Brimbank council continues to improve. The council received its results from the annual Local Government Community Survey last week, which show improvement across all “core measures”. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the results showed the community thinks the council is on the right track. “When it comes to ‘overall council direction’ – Brimbank residents have rated

our performance well above the average for metropolitan and Victorian councils,” Cr Giudice said. “This is a significant improvement on the previous year and shows that our community believes we are on the right path.” Across the seven core measures – overall performance, community consultation, advocacy, making community decisions, sealed local roads, customer service or overall direction – Brimbank’s score increased compared with the 2017 survey. Council’s top performing areas included arts

centres and libraries, waste management and emergency and disaster management. Cr Giudice said the results reflected significant investment. “Council has invested heavily in arts centres and libraries over recent years – with the new Bowery Theatre at the St Albans Community Centre, Keilor Community Hub including the new Keilor library, and the new Sunshine library at the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre. “The results of this survey reflect the very real improvement to services and facilities

available in our community,” Cr Giudice said. The survey also highlighted the areas the community felt were important for the council to focus on. “Our community rated waste management as the top priority area,” Cr Giudice said. “Council recently adopted its waste, recycling and litter strategy, setting out council’s strategy to create a cleaner and greener more sustainable environment for Brimbank. “Areas that need our attention include population growth, community decisions, and local streets and footpaths.”

Packaged with care A dedicated group of volunteers is giving patients at Sunshine Hospital one less thing to worry about. For the past six years the team at the Deer Park Lions Club have been making care packages for hospital patients. Sunshine Health nursing and midwifery director Wendy Watson said the gesture goes a long way. “The group collate, create and distribute bags of toiletries known as ‘care packages’ to help patients maintain their dignity with their sanitary and self-care needs,” she said. “With the rising costs of living making family budgets tighter than ever, these packages can be vital for patients in need.” The hand-sewn, reusable cotton bags contain shampoo, conditioner, soap, tissues, deodorant and a few extras to help out with essential self-care. The team puts together about 800 packs

annually and is aiming to have 400 delivered in time for Christmas. Karen Fry of the Deer Park Lions Club said that hygiene items should be a right not a privilege, but costs can be an issue. “A hand-sewn cotton bag adds extra comfort to the package and removes the clinical nature of hygiene items. A large part of what we do is also about making everyone feel special,” she said. “We were thrilled to have won the Lions District Governor’s Award and Grill’d Highpoint’s Local Matters community donation program for this initiative. The $300 we won will help us achieve our goal for 2018. “However, we are still looking for people who can donate their time to help us sew.” To make a donation contact the Deer Park Lions Club at www.deerpark.vic.lions.org.au Tate Papworth

A group of St Albans residents are fighting the Housing Commission purchase of 27 houses in a privately built estate because they claim the sale of the properties at Housing Commission terms will lower the value of their $38,000 homes.

Characters throughout history, starting with the cavemen, came alive at Deer Park High School on Monday. Year seven students took part in Book Week and the theme was “A page in history”. The 160 students turned out in fancy dress, made Book Week posters and books, paraded and then had a barbecue lunch. Local magician Norm Brown entertained them during the afternoon.

The mayor of Brimbank, Councillor Sam David, will call an emergency meeting next Monday night to bring councillors to order. Cr David was forced to take the disciplinary action after a heated slanging match erupted at a meeting last Tuesday week. Councillors Sam Muscat and Charlie Apap engaged in a war of words after it was learned that Cr Apap had submitted a delegate’s report that he did not write about a meeting he did not attend.

Brimbank police have resorted to parking marked cars around the municipality to deter criminals because there are not sufficient officers to ensure a police presence. The creative policing tactic has prompted Brimbank Council to call on the State Government and Victoria Police to add an extra 20 officers to the Sunshine and Keilor Downs police stations.

28 August 2018 Melton City Council Community News

Mayor’s Message

Watts Ward

Cr Bob Turner

Cr Lara Carli

It was my pleasure last week to officially launch the City of Melton’s Build Melton Hospital: Invest in the West campaign; the most significant advocacy project ever undertaken by our community. As one of Australia’s fastest growing municipalities, the City of Melton has experienced sustained residential growth for nearly two decades. Our current population is around 154,000 and in 30 years, it will double to more than 400,000—the size of Canberra! Yet, our nearest major hospitals are Footscray—30 kilometres away—and Sunshine, where according to government data, patients can wait over eight hours to be seen by a doctor. Build Melton Hospital has been developed so our need for vital health services is communicated to all candidates running in the November State election.

As Mayor, I have witnessed firsthand, the frustration of fellow residents unable to access hospital services, and it’s time this changed. So, I encourage residents to get behind this campaign. Visit the website buildmeltonhospital. com.au, follow us on Facebook, facebook.com/buildmeltonhospital or fill out a Build Melton Hospital postcard that you’ll find throughout the community.

As Council begins to prepare our 2019/2020 budget, I encourage local residents, groups, clubs and organisations to submit their ideas for community projects, and come along to one of this year’s budget engagement sessions on 19 September (Melton) and 20 September (Caroline Springs). This is a wonderful opportunity to have your say about what should be included in our next budget, and put your project idea on Council’s radar.

In mid-September, we’ll be handdelivering every postcard we collect to State Parliament. The more postcards we collect, the louder our voice will be. The louder our voice, the harder we will be to ignore. I am available to meet with residents most Saturday mornings from 9am, by appointment. Please contact Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200 to book a time, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or via email at: bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au

Projects can be submitted at melton.vic.gov.au/budgetinput until 12 September, and registered participants will be given 15 minutes to present their idea to Councillors and Council officers. So, be sure to have your say. Visit Council’s website for further information. As your Councillor, one of my key responsibilities is to constantly look into ways to improve our wonderful City.

That’s why, after noticing access issues around Taylors Hill Shopping Centre (corner Gourlay Road and Hume Drive), I submitted a Notice of Motion at last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting. The Notice asks Council Officers to investigate the potential to introduce a dedicated turning lane on Gourlay Road that would enable cars travelling north to turn right, directly into the shopping centre. I’ve received strong support from residents around my Notice, and will provide updates as information about options, and their likely cost, become available. Feel free to contact me about Watts Ward or Council related issues on 0409 951 020 or email at: lara.carli@ melton.vic.gov.au or visit my Facebook page at: facebook.com/Cr.LaraCarli

WE’RE POWERING FORWARD MAKING ENERGY MORE AFFORDABLE

As Australia’s energy system transitions the Australian Government is making energy more affordable. We’ve turned the corner on electricity prices and reined in the power of the network companies. We’ve secured agreements with retailers to give customers a better deal – saving you hundreds of dollars a year. And we’ve ensured there’s enough gas for Australians before it’s shipped off shore. It’s actions like these today that power a more affordable energy future.

ADVERTISING FEATURE Week.

Legacy, celebrating 95 years of caring for veterans’ families in need, is well known for the thousands of lives it has supported with friendship and compassion. Legacy is the only not-for-profit that cares solely for the families of veterans who have given their life or health for their country. Today, Legacy cares for 60,000 families nationally including children; widows and widowers, many in their 80s and 90s; people with a disability; and an increasing number of young families of veterans from more recent conflicts and service facing the trauma of psychological and physical injuries.

Legacy’s vital support for a family in grief

At a time when all hope may seem lost, Legacy is there to help a family or individual through the tough times and restore their confidence in the future.

Nadia lost her husband Robin to cancer in 2015. Robin was a navy man, serving on HMAS Parramatta as a quartermaster-gunner during the Vietnam War.

“Legatees do welfare checks through visits or calls, along with a small team of staff. Advice and support is just a phone call away.” Services include relief from financial hardship, advice and referrals to counselling, assistance with children’s education and development, encouraging supportive friendships and positive ageing and advocating for entitlements and services. On behalf of all Australians, Legacy ensures that veterans’ families facing adversity never stand alone. During Legacy Week, September 2-8, hundreds of volunteers will be in the community selling Legacy badges and bears to raise funds. Gratefully received donations can be made online at legacyweekappeal. com.au or call 1800 534 229.

When Robin died, Nadia and teenage son Daniel, who live in Brimbank, were devastated. Nadia felt afraid about her future, when Legacy called to give her help, direction and encouragement. She says she would be lost without Legacy, then and now. “I was feeling anxious and depressed, not able to drive without anxiety or go to work. Our caseworker, Chloe, met with both Daniel and me and talked us through the help Legacy could offer. I could barely think straight so it came as a big relief. We are very grateful,” she says. One of the first things Chloe organised was Nadia’s medications for diabetes and blood pressure, paying her pharmacy bill and keeping her on track with taking her tablets. She also helped Nadia find a counsellor. Nadia’s main source of anxiety was keeping Daniel on an even keel. Legacy paid for most of his school fees and helped him navigate through his VCE years. Now he’s left school, Legacy guided him into a business management course and also paid for him to have driving lessons. Daniel hopes to go to university. Chloe checks in with Daniel regularly to talk about his plans and progress. She is also now helping Nadia find work through an employment agency. Nadia would love to return to her job as a personal carer, or perhaps get involved in helping people with cooking – she loves making sweets.

Melbourne Legacy case manager Chloe chats to Nadia to provide much needed support. (Supplied)

For every serving Australian, there’s more than one life at stake.

Legacy cares for the loved ones of deceased or seriously injured veterans. It’s not just our servicemen and women who sacrifice on behalf of our country. Thousands of spouses and kids are deeply affected by the death or serious injury of a loved one. Legacy provides practical assistance, such as camps and activities, educational support and financial aid, ensuring the families of veterans are able to thrive. Show your support this Legacy Week.

“The hallmark of our services is the care and compassion that our volunteers, known as Legatees, have for Legacy families,” Melbourne Legacy President Hugh Roberton says.

Minor hiccup for the Lions By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park coach Marc Bullen did not sugar-coat his disappointment at missing out on a sixth consecutive minor premiership in Western Region Football League division 1. After winning the past five premierships from pole position, the Lions will have to take a longer route to the grand final after qualifying for the finals in second spot on the ladder. The Lions have built a reputation as ruthless operators under Bullen, so they were not happy to settle for second, even if only in the minor premiership reckoning. “It’s certainly disappointing, Bullen said. “We were beaten by a better side last week in Werribee Districts, so you take it on the chin. “After not being able to get the first week off in the finals, we’re in a bit of uncharted waters for a finals series. In the grand scheme of things, Deer Park missing out on the top ranking ahead of the finals is not all that important. Sure, the Lions will miss out on the week’s break in week one of the finals, but that should not be too much of a hindrance in their quest for a sixth consecutive flag given the depth in their squad. What will be a hurdle for the Lions is a beefed-up competition – there are five teams that could genuinely classify themselves as a premiership contender. “With the abolishment of the AFL Victoria development league and the restrictions that AFL Victoria put on the football environment, which needed to happen and has been great, it’s been really enjoyable competition because every week there’s been a challenge, Bullen said. “You get excited as a coach and as a footy club that you’ve got to earn your four points every

week. We’ve got the fight of our lives coming up in the finals because there’s five good sides in it. Deer Park will enter the finals on the back of a 181-point win over wooden spooner Wyndhamvale. Jase Perkins kicked 10 goals in the rout. The Lions will face Hoppers Crossing in a tantalising qualifying final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. The elimination final, at the same venue a day earlier, will involve Werribee Districts and Spotswood. In other round 18 results, St Albans won a thriller by two points over Albion at JR Parsons Reserve. Sunshine finished its campaign on a three-game winning streak, overcoming Caroline Springs by 28 points at Kinder Smith Reserve. In division 2, Albanvale had a season to forget. But it had an ending to remember as it upset Newport Power by 23 points at Robert Bruce Oval. In division 3, Braybrook was clobbered by 73 points away to Tarneit in its final tune-up. The Brookers will meet the Wyndham Suns in the elimination final at Dempster Park on Sunday. Sunshine Heights lost to minor premiers Point Cook Centrals by 35 points, while North Sunshine lost to the Wyndham Suns by 140 points. In WRFL women’s, Caroline Springs was victorious by 23 points over Spotswood in the qualifying final. The Lakers will square off with Manor Lakes in the semi-final at Burbank Oval on Saturday, with the winner to advance directly to the grand final. Deer Park forward James Condos is taken high in a tackle by Wyndhamvale defender Cameron Morrison. (Shawn Smits)

59 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 28, 2018

SPORT Cavalier hopes alive to the last With simultaneous 3pm kick-offs on Sunday, club social media accounts will be closely monitored by supporters of all three teams. Finals-chasing Melbourne Knights could be doing some social media monitoring of their own come Sunday. The Knights’ position was not known as Star Weekly went to print due to them playing on Monday night against Bulleen Lions. As of Monday morning, the Knights were one point out of the top six, but were favourites to get the job done later that day against the cellar dweller Lions. In women’s NPL, the race for the premiers plate is not over just yet. Calder United must have thought its chances of snatching top spot were finished after a disappointing 3-0 loss to Bulleen Lions on Saturday. But Calder received a lifeline 24 hours later when top side South Melbourne coughed up a lead in a 2-1 loss to Alamein. Calder will travel to Box Hill United in the penultimate round on Saturday. Eagles’ win disappoints By Lance Jenkinson North Sunshine Eagles barely had to get out of first gear to claim a 3-0 win that consigned their opponents, Hoppers Crossing, to relegation in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at Grange Reserve on Saturday. But the three-goal victory was not enough to appease Eagles player-coach Ben Isai, who was seething after watching his team produce at a level that was nowhere near its potential. The Eagles meandered through the second half, not hammering home their advantagestruggling opposition. Sitting in third place, the Eagles missed a chance to pick up some much-needed goal difference on the top two. “I’ll be completely honest – our second half was terrible,” Isai said. “It was like an intra-club session where the motivation to play wasn’t there, which is weird because we need goal difference. “With about 20 minutes to go, I turned to one of my assistants and said, ‘We might as well just leave’. “It was a free for all – everyone was running everywhere, it was terrible.” The early part of the first half was a slow burn for North Sunshine. Once the visitors found their groove, they proved they were a cut above undermanned Hoppers Crossing. The Eagles went into half-time 2-0 up and coasting. Ajak Panek was influential with a goal and an assist, while Matko Budimir was rock solid in defence. The mood in the Eagles’ changerooms was positive at half-time, despite wasted chances. Such was North Sunshine’s dominance in the first half, most spectators at the Hogans Road ground expected it to double the margin or better at the end of the 90 minutes. Instead, the Eagles came out with a lacklustre mindset. If not for a fine save from goalkeeper Zaim Zeneli, the Eagles’ lead might have even been halved in the second half. Zeneli kept that shot out, the Eagles got a third goal and stitched up all three points, but Isai was left wondering what might have been. “After games, I generally don’t speak too much,” Isai said. “Emotions sometimes get the better of me … being a young coach, I’ve been told by our technical director, when the game finishes, just walk off. But today I couldn’t. 60 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 28, 2018

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Another football home and away season has come to an end. The lucky ones still involved can enjoy, or should enjoy, the fruits of their labours with the satisfaction of being in a finals campaign. For those at junior level, it is all over with hopefully many good memories and experiences to look back on, regardless of the results. I believe we have taken much of the enjoyment out of underage football by becoming talent scouts rather than coaches who build team spirit, values and goals. Too many people talk about this kid or that one, but few ever mention a great team. Like so many things in society today, it is too much about the individual. Team sports such as footy need to address its direction before it completely erodes the whole ethos of the game. ■ I mentioned Sunshine Kangaroos senior coach Brendan Hallinan last week as he has moved on from Kinder Smith Reserve. He is not the only senior coach in the WRFL on the move. Albion’s Chris O’Keefe, one of the most decorated players in the competition, has left, as has St Albans’ Brad Murphy and Wyndhamvale’s Daniel Bunworth. Coaching at suburban level has never been more time consuming and demanding. The quest for success adds yet another layer of expectation. Anthony Eames has re-signed at Spotswood and it will be interesting to see if five-time premiership coach Marc Bullen goes around again at Deer Park. Saade Ghazi has taken his Altona side to top spot and his business interests are always a factor in planning for the future. Forty per cent of the coaches gone and that is only division one! ■ Kevin O’Neill has called a day to his involvement as a trainer at the Western Bulldogs after 26 years. That is a huge body of work and a commitment that warrants recognition, which Kevin received when made a Life Member of the club. The end of any season sees change but it is good to see people bow out gracefully – not pushed – as is so often the case. ■ Coming soon to the WRFL website and social media platforms is a series I have been involved with called The Icons. These recently recorded interviews include umpires, Barry Priest medallists, WRFL life members, a women’s panel, a footballing family and the men behind the success of Deer Park. They were fun and fascinating to do, I hope you enjoy them.

“I congratulated them on the win, but I told them what I thought about the second half. “I just let them know the second half wasn’t acceptable because that game should’ve been four or five nil. “Everyone was just trying to score themselves or create a pass that wasn’t there. We were trying to thread passes through that even

EPL players probably couldn’t pass through.” North Sunshine is four points behind ladder leader Geelong and three points behind second-placed Preston Lions. The Eagles will get a chance to make up ground on the top two this Saturday against Banyule City because Geelong and Preston will be facing each other.

Green Gully Cavaliers twice came from behind to salvage a crucial point in a 2-2 draw with Hume City in a pulsating National Premier League game on Saturday night. The Broadmeadows Valley Park match was huge, with both sides threatened with relegation play-offs. The Cavaliers are third last on the ladder, the position that carries with it a relegation play-off with the NPL 2 runner-up, while Hume City is fourth last and provisionally in a position of safety. But that could change in a dramatic final round this Sunday. One of three teams will finish in that dreaded third-last spot – Green Gully, on 26 points, Hume City (27) and South Melbourne (28). If Green Gully wins its match against Kingston City at Green Gully Reserve on Sunday, it will avoid a relegation play-off if Hume City draws with or loses to Pascoe Vale; or South Melbourne loses to Port Melbourne. If Green Gully draws with Kingston City, it can escape a relegation play-off if Hume City loses to Pascoe Vale.

Sharks don’t have enough in the tank for final push A last-quarter comeback by Hillside fell just short, bringing to an end the Sharks season in Essendon District Football League division 1. A poor third quarter against Craigieburn put the Sharks behind, but with the wind in their favour in the last quarter all hope was not lost. The Sharks reduced the 34-point margin back to two points, but couldn’t find that much-needed goal to put them in front. Craigieburn held on to win 13.12 (90)-12.16 (88). Sharks football manager Darren Mantynen said the third quarter proved costly. The Eagles, who were kicking with about a three-goal breeze, kicked six goals to the Sharks’ one. “We attacked too hard and didn’t defend well enough,” Mantynen said. “We didn’t do enough to shut them down well enough. We didn’t stick to the game plan so we were playing catch-up.” Mantynen said despite being 34 points down

at the last break, they hadn’t given up hope and knew if they stuck to their structures would be back in the game. They were right, but weren’t able to maintain the momentum the last couple of minutes. “We made a few poor decisions,” Mantynen said. “We couldn’t find a target inside 50.” He said Rusiate Komaitai, Thomas Drake and David Fruscalzo were the side’s best. Victor Micallef and Jeremy Hayes both stepped up in the last quarter to help them get back into the game. The loss means the Sharks have lost all three of their division 1 finals the past two years. Mantynen said he would rate this season five out of 10. “It’s been good to make finals with the amount of injuries we’ve had,” he said. “People wrote us off mid year. We knew our best football was good enough to match it with the top sides, but we weren’t able to do that consistently enough. “We would drift off at times.” Mantynen said they were already looking at

players to add to the side next year, with players in the middle age bracket to be at the top of that list. While the seniors season is over, it’s not all bad news for the Sharks. Their reserves and under-19s are through to preliminary finals this weekend. All their junior sides, both boys and girls, made finals. Only their women’s side missed out. Craigieburn will play Tullamarine in the preliminary final for a spot in the grand final. Blues rue grand chance By Tara Murray There was disappointment, coupled with a sense of pride, for Keilor after its Northern Football League women’s division 1 grand final loss. In their first season in the NFL competition, the Blues didn’t know what to expect. Yes, they had come off a premiership in the Essendon District and Western Region Football League, but this was going up another level. They took it all before them, winning the minor premiership and qualifying as the first team through to the grand final. Unfortunately their run came to an end against Bendigo in the grand final. Bendigo was a step ahead of the Blues all day and it showed on the scoreboard. The Thunder produced their best performance of the season, to claim the premiership 7.7 (49)-1.4 (10). Blues coach Emma Kerry said there were mixed feelings after the match. “It’s never nice to lose, especially a grand final,” she said. “Bendigo was switched on from the beginning and it was their best game all year from what I’ve observed. “My girls can hold their heads up high. Full credit to Bendigo and their coaching staff.” The Thunder did all the attacking in the first quarter, before the Blues found a bit more of the ball in the second. The Blues’ momentum was halted when Courtney Musico was carried from the field with concussion. Kerry said Musico’s injury really hit the team and they probably did not recover. She said they weren’t disappointed with how they played, they were just beaten by a better side on the day. “We weren’t playing bad, things just weren’t going our way on the day,” Kerry said. “They shut down both Wright sisters. Sarah had a head knock in the first quarter and she struggled to recover from that. “For my girls there’s a lot of celebrating for a season that has definitely had more ups than downs. “I’m just proud of them making it this far … I couldn’t envisage this at the start of the year.” Kerry said Rachael Knight was clearly best on ground for the Blues and dominated in the ruck. American Jess Blecher was the other standout. In the end, the Thunder had more contributors. “I had some sore girls the last couple of weeks,” Kerry said. “The Wright sisters haven’t stopped all year and haven’t trained with the team the last couple of weeks. “It meant other girls had to stand up.

Keilor’s Jill McBain shrugs off a tackle. (Marco De Luca)

Unfortunately for us, we weren’t able to get the contributors across the board like Bendigo.” The season overall has been a successful one for the Blues women’s teams. They fielded two open age sides and their under-18 girls made the grand final. Kerry said there was plenty of support from the club.

“Our club is 141-years old and traditionally it’s a men’s club,” she said. “They have really embraced women’s football … it’s gone from strength to strength. “Hopefully we’ll have something sustainable at Keilor. Having so many 18-year-olds out there is something to be proud of.”

Falcons fly high to make grand final City West Falcons’ remarkable late season run has continued, with the side through to the Victorian Netball League championship grand final. Having virtually played elimination finals for more than two months, the Falcons continued their good form in the finals. On Wednesday night, they defeated the Hawks 61-48 in a semi-final. It set up a preliminary final with Melbourne University Lightning just four days later. Lightning had been one side the Falcons hadn’t been able to match this year. But that didn’t worry the Falcons, as they took out the preliminary final on Sunday, 63-58. Falcons coach Marg Lind said they had been able to execute their game plan. She said they had focused on bringing in different plans late in the game, to counteract the Lightning’s game plan. “They threw everything at us,” she said. “We got off to an amazing start and it gave them the confidence in the game plan. “They got back to within two, three and four at times, but the girls were able to hold their heads up.” Lind said the self confidence is growing in the group, which was shown in the dying minutes of the game. Lind said like they had the last few weeks, they had a real even contribution across the board with everyone playing their role. The shooters shot 63 goals from 66 attempts. Having not expected to make finals, let alone a grand final, Lind said they have nothing to lose. “We’ve been playing finals for the last eight weeks and we knew that we had to keep winning. “Even five weeks ago, I wouldn’t have believed that we would be in this spot. “It’s about us now rewarding ourselves and hopefully reward the people who have worked hard.” The Falcons face Geelong Falcons in the grand final. The Falcons finished on top of the ladder. The grand final is at the State Netball Hockey Centre at 4pm on Sunday. Tara Murray 61 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 28, 2018
