“Brimbank council has been advised that asbestos has been identified at the site of the Upper Stony Creek Transformation Project, which is currently being managed by Development Victoria on behalf of the project partners,” he said. “Council has been advised that the type of asbestos, its location, and the fact that the area is closed off to the public, means that the asbestos poses a very low risk to human health. “Development Victoria is working to clean up the site, in accordance with Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and WorkSafe guidelines.” A Development Victoria spokesperson said work at the site had been stopped for about a month while an asbestos management plan was prepared. He said the plan has now been finalised and neighbouring residents will be doorknocked and receive a letter advising them of the process. The Stony Creek project began in April with the aim of transforming the area from a drain into a natural, re-vegetated creek. Work on the 1.2-kilometre stretch of the creek between Furlong and Gilmour roads will include the planting of 2200 indigenous trees and installation of walking paths. A blooming good idea Hope for a brighter, cancer-free future is blooming. The Brimbank community is being urged to support Daffodil Day, the Cancer Council’s flagship fundraiser each August. Supporters and volunteers will be selling daffodils and merchandise and collecting donations to help fund the cancer fight. This year, the Cancer Council is hoping to raise $4 million for cancer research. Daffodil Day will be on Friday, August 24. An $11.35 million project to transform Upper Stony Creek has ground to a halt after asbestos was discovered at the site. A Sunshine North resident said the area had been cordoned off and marked as “hazardous asbestos removal areas” for some time. “The large affected areas have a green powdery look to them, which can be seen from our back fence,” said the resident, who requested anonymity. “Unless we’ve missed something, we haven’t been informed about the removal of this asbestos, which in our case is within metres of our home.” Brimbank infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside confirmed the presence of asbestos at the site, but said the risk to the public was minimal.

Hope is on the way for Sunshine By Ewen McRae Sunshine Hospital will be one of six Victorian hospitals to benefit from the expansion of a new suicide prevention program. The state government announced last week that the Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) initiative would be expanding after a successful pilot at the Alfred Hospital over the past 12 months. Sunshine will join Casey, Latrobe, Ballarat, Werribee, and Bendigo hospitals in adopting the initiative.

Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said the toll of suicide in the community had to be reduced and initiatives like this were helping. “Every year, suicide takes more than twice as many lives as the road toll – that’s simply unacceptable,” Mr Foley said. “The HOPE program has already helped hundreds of Victorians who have attempted suicide and need an intensive response in the months following, which we know can be a period of heightened risk. “By expanding the program to more sites

across the state, we are continuing to take a proactive approach to suicide prevention.” HOPE provides practical support and follow-up for people leaving hospital after a suicide attempt. Outreach workers also work with families, friends and carers.

Mid-West area mental health manager Terry Runciman said the program would be a welcome addition to the suicide prevention services at Sunshine Hospital. “One suicide in the Brimbank or Melton region is one too many and this new program will help support our staff to remain in contact with our clients in the community who we believe are at risk of harming themselves again,” Mr Runciman said The government has allocated $18.7 million in this year’s budget to expand the program.

From local icon to screen idol A Sunshine resident is pushing for the suburb’s iconic silos to be transformed into an outdoor cinema. Jacob Holley’s proposal has been shortlisted by the state government’s Pick My Project initiative. He said he has long thought the silos should be showcased. “A few months ago I noticed the top of the silos being vandalised, sections at the top were being kicked out and I thought if something isn’t done to preserve them, they’re probably going to come down,” Mr Holley said.

“I started a discussion on a local Facebook group about what people saw as the silos’ future. “It was a bit of a way to gauge community sentiment. The feedback was really strong – these silos clearly mean a lot to people.” Mr Holley said his initial idea was to have murals painted on the silos, however that proposal was knocked back. “The owners were worried what impact permanent work might have on the silos, so we thought why not project art up onto them. “We could get schools involved to project student art and even screen movies.

Former Victorian premier Steve Bracks has met with Brimbank councillors to discuss strategies to address poor health, education and employment outcomes across Melbourne’s west. Mr Bracks, chair of the West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA) discussed the group’s recently released strategy, which calls for urgent investment in “catch-up” programs for the west. The strategy also recommended major job clusters be developed around Sunshine, Footscray and Werribee. Both Sunshine and Werribee are areas which Plan Melbourne identified as National Employment and Innovation Clusters. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said local investment was vital. “Demand for jobs in Melbourne’s west is expected to increase – by 2030, it’s estimated 100,000 more people will be looking for jobs in the west, than there are jobs available,” she said. “By investing in local employment clusters we not only create more jobs for our local communities – but we reduce traffic congestion. “Council has a strong focus on advocating for investment to address significant, health, wellbeing and social challenges facing our community – the WoMEDA strategy recommendations support council’s calls for investment,” Cr Giudice said. The council has written to the major political parties for commitments to fund “catch-up” programs. “It is time for our state and federal governments to invest in the west,” Cr Giudice said. Finding the right balance By Ewen McRae Mladen Kurbanovic may not be a sprightly as he once was, but for a man who’s just celebrated his 102nd birthday, he’s travelling well. The St Albans man, who chalked up the milestone on August 6, said buying his first Bible following the passing of his wife had changed his life and was his secret to his longevity. “Until I was 45 I did not know I had a soul,” Mr Kurbanovic said. “My secret has been to study the Bible. It really is a super book that should be diligently taught. “I am who I am because I have balance between spirit, mind and body.” Mr Kurbanovic said eating wheat grass also helped keep his energy levels up, and regular walks helped him feel young. The Croatian-born Australian grew up in Zagreb, where he was studying science before the breakout of World War II. When the war began he faced a simple choice; finish his studies or join the army. “I had colleagues who were older than me, and when they finished studying they went into the army and were shot down,” he said. “So it was finish my studies or join the army. I said ‘thanks very much, I will keep studying’. “Zagreb was not bombed much during the war so I was very lucky.” After Zagreb he studied agriculture in Brussels, before immigrating to Australia with his wife in 1961, where he worked at the CSIRO until 1981. He spent many years living in Fitzroy North and Hawthorn before moving out west later in life.

Sunbury line services on the improve Commuters using trains on the Sunbury line experienced their most punctual services in the past 12 months according to new data from Public Transport Victoria. The monthly performance results showed a marked improvement in the number of Sunbury line services arriving on time, with 92.6 per cent of services arriving within five minutes of their scheduled time. It was more than 3 per cent better than June’s 89.5 per cent punctuality marker, and was also ahead of the overall performance result of 89.9 per cent. PTV chief executive Jeroen Weimar said the results were very pleasing considering the number of commuters on the train network continued to grow. “More and more people are relying on our public transport network to get them where they need to go, we are focused on ensuring we are delivering the service they expect and deserve,” Mr Weimar said. The Ballarat V/Line service also recorded a strong improvement in punctuality in July, with 85.9 per cent of services delivered on time, compared to June’s 82.5 per cent. A jewel in Sunshine’s crown By Tate Papworth A new civic green space is the centrepiece of a plan to transform the heart of Sunshine’s main road. Brimbank council has a vision to turn Hampshire Road, between Devonshire Road and Bennett Place, into a place that invites people to socialise. Feature trees, more space for footpath trading and a place for community events are all part of the proposal. “Our vision for the heart of Hampshire Road is a place where shoppers can stay a little longer, meet friends and enjoy community events,” Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said. “We want to make this an inviting and green space where our community can come together to relax, socialise and enjoy their shopping.” Under the proposal, the section of Hampshire Road under consideration will remain open to traffic, but will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Cr Giudice invited residents, shoppers and traders to have their say on the next stage of the Hampshire Road upgrade. She said the community will be able to see what the space will look like thanks to technology. “We’re sharing these ideas with you, the people who live, work or play in Sunshine, and invite you to provide feedback. “We’ve set up a pop-up park in Hampshire Road and invite you to come down and immerse yourself in this vision through digital displays that showcase what is possible.” To take a virtual tour at www.brimbank.vic. gov.au/haveyoursay Consultation is open until September 17.

Pedestrian dies

Police are appealing for information after a 26-year-old Deer Park man died following a crash in Kings Park last week. Investigators have been told the man was struck by a car changing lanes about 6.30pm on August 15. He was taken to hospital but died overnight. Parma’s with a cause Taylors Lakes Hotel is doing its bit to help fight the drought crippling parts of rural Australia – one parma at a time. The hotel is taking part in the nationwide Parma for a Farmer campaign, with $1 from every chicken parma sold going towards drought relief projects. Marketing manager Terry Gunn said the hotel hoped to see an increase on the 2500 parmas typically sold every month. “We want to push that up to 3500 parmas if we can,” he said. “Obviously, the produce that the farmers are producing is important because we buy that to put in our restaurants and feed our customers. So if we don’t have a good supply chain, then the whole system is interrupted.

“People are starting to realise that maybe we’ve underestimated the role of our farmers. “We think everything just comes from a supermarket shelf, but there are people behind that shelf that provide the wholesale for the retail environment. “If we don’t look after them with the bales of hay, or providing extra water, we don’t have produce. “Everyone gets excited at this time of year to be coming out of winter, except for the farmers who can’t cultivate their crops. An unoccupied car was fired at in Hillside last week. Police attended an address on John Paul Drive on August 14 following reports of a shot fired about 11pm. The window of a car parked outside a house was shot at, believed to be from a passing vehicle. No one was injured during the incident. Driving force to help farmers By Goya Dmytryshchak A western suburbs trucking business is aiming to raise $10,000 for drought-stricken farmers. Henry Transport Group (HTG), based in Altona North and Truganina, is donating $10 from every tow job it completes in August to Buy a Bale. Buy a Bale, run by Rural Aid, is supplying emergency hay to New South Wales and Queensland families struggling to keep cattle, sheep and horses alive through one of the worst droughts in living memory.

HTG operations manager Tyson Beckwith said the company wanted to help working class people who were struggling to keep animals and crops alive. “Most people I know have been touched by suicide – I had an uncle who committed suicide … the rate of suicide in rural areas is through the roof,” he said. “Most of the guys here are in their 30s and 40s – we kind of remember an Australia where farming was the backbone of the country and farmers were respected and admired, and it seems like they’re getting a little bit forgotten.” The family business last month completed more than 900 jobs and aims to reach 10,000 jobs for August. About 80 per cent of the company’s business is machinery towing for construction and development projects.

Mr Beckwith said a donation of $10,000 to Buy a Bale would be able to provide more than 460,000 litres of water to farmers. “Ten dollars doesn’t sound like much but

we do a lot of turnover so it can become quite significant,” he said. “Hopefully, it inspires other businesses to do similar.”

Buy a Bale was founded five years ago by Charles Alder and his wife Tracy, after they read about Queensland farmers having to shoot their cattle during a drought.

A Sunshine artist’s narrative of Aboriginal experiences will feature prominently around Melbourne. Hayley Millar-Baker is one of seven artists commissioned for the 2018 Melbourne Art Trams. The project transforms eight trams into public artworks as part of the visual arts program at the Melbourne International Art Festival. Millar-Baker said her design explored the connection to country, land, flora and fauna. “I’m a Gunditjmara woman – people from the south west – and I wanted to bring my country into this country,” she said. “I normally make quite intricate works, but when I was making this one I wanted to make something quite simple. “You’ll still need a couple of looks to capture every animal in there, but my main concept was to bring country to Melbourne city.” Millar-Baker said her design was meant to tell a story.

Brimbank’s female footy score By Tate Papworth Female football in Brimbank has been given a kick-along. AFL Victoria last week pledged $100,000 towards upgrading female-friendly changerooms throughout Brimbank. Lionheart Reserve in Taylors Lakes, John McLeod Reserve in Deer Park and Keilor Park Recreation Reserve will gain improved facilities as part of the pledge. AFL Victoria chief executive Steven Reaper said the funding would help ensure females had the facilities they deserved.

“With our participation rates growing year on year and with female football booming, the provision of welcoming facilities that can cater for this growth is critical,” he said. “Whether it is new lights, oval surface upgrades or female-friendly changerooms, these spaces require upgrades so that our volunteer-led clubs can continue to deliver their incredibly important services to their communities.” The funding is part of a recently pledged $2.76 million package of AFL funding to dozens of local football facility projects across Victoria.

Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the funding would go a long way. “The funding from AFL Victoria would assist council in creating clean, safe and accessible facilities that support the growing levels of female sport participation in our community,” she said.

“The works will involve the upgrade of existing change rooms into female-friendly changerooms with new toilets, showers, amenities, flooring and umpire’s room. “Council expects the changeroom upgrades across the three sports reserves will continue to boost participation in sport for people of all ages, abilities and genders,” she said. “This is important work – we know that improvements to sport facilities have a real and measurable impact on female sport participation and levels of physical activity – supporting everyone in our community to live healthy and active lives.“

All about the fine print A recently established studio in Sunshine is offering visitors the chance to observe a wide range of print-making techniques in action. The Sunshine Print Artspace will hold an open day this Saturday from 2-4pm. Artist Adrian Spurr said the event was all about providing insights into the print art world. “The open day is an opportunity to have visitors come into the space, have a look at what we’re doing here and learn about how they can participate,” he said. “There’s a lot of machinery around here and each one is individual with a different process. “We’re giving the public the opportunity to have a look at a professional print studio in action.” During the day, Spurr and fellow artists Phillip Doggett-Williams and Julia Raath will hold demonstrations of lithography, collagraph

printing, textile block printing and screen printing. Following the open day demonstrations, there will be a program of workshops on offer in which beginners and more experienced artists will be able to learn techniques and use the facilities at SPA on a regular basis. “We offer services for established and emerging artists, but we want to open it up to the general public for workshops,” Spurr said. “We’ll be offering workshops in lithography, relief printing and textile silk screening. “They’ll be staged progressively through the year with the hope to develop the print studio into a place to hold other arts events such as poetry readings. This weekend she will be at the forefront of the Parkinson’s Victoria Walk in the Park, as she has been for the past 10 years. “It is what it is, and I manage pretty well,” Ms Goss said.

“I do calisthenics to help manage it, and I paint a bit because when you paint you don’t shake. It’s been very gradual with me.” Ms Goss and her son, well known actor and Parkinson’s Victoria ambassador Shane Jacobson, will be warming up the crowd before this weekend’s walk. The walk, which will leave from Federation Square at 11am on Sunday, August 26 is the biggest event on the Parkinson’s Victoria calendar. Organisers hope to attract 4000 participants to this year’s event. “We get up there and have a quick chat and then warm up the crowd with some hand actions, wriggling our hips, things like that to get moving,” Ms Goss said. “It’s a big day, not only for people with Parkinson’s, but also their families and support groups. And they’re finding out new things about the condition all the time so the money

Rockbank plan feedback call Reducing car reliance and improving pedestrian and cyclist safety will be a key focus in planning for the future Rockbank Town Centre, as outlined in a draft plan. Streets have been designed to reflect an “emphasis” on walking in the town centre, and accessing the nearby train station by foot, scooter, bus and car will be “seamless” Fourteen key principles have been identified for planning the town centre, including a focus on mixed land use, high-quality public spaces and sustainability. “Water will be collected, cleansed, infiltrated, and where possible harvested and used to support the landscapes and the people of Rockbank,” according to the draft plan. Members of the public are being invited to have their say on the plan. Melton mayor Bob Turner said: “We want to make sure Rockbank and surrounds can thrive … feedback is so important to achieving this.” Officers from the Ballarat Rail Project and Melton council will be at an information session this week to discuss the draft plan. ‘Giant step’ for palliative care By Tate Papworth More than 600 patients have accessed a 24-hour palliative care service in Brimbank since it was launched in April. Mercy Palliative Care services manager Fran Gore said the service was a giant step forward. In the first six weeks that the new service was available, 89 patients were visited by a palliative care nurse between the hours of 10.30pm–7am. In the six-weeks prior to that, district nurses provided advice to 64 patients, with 25 of them

Rocher weeds out trouble A relaxing walk in Brimbank Park has turned into a harrowing ordeal for three-year-old cocker spaniel, Rocher. Rocher was being walked on leash down a path at the park by her owner Michael Mahoney when a rabbit caught her attention. “She saw the rabbit and dived for it. Unfortunately there’s a plantation absolutely full of stinging nettle,” Mr Mahoney said. “We went for breakfast shortly after and her nose started to erupt. “I took her to the vet and she’s had to go back four times since. She even had to be put under for two hours and have all the skin from below her eyes to the tip of her nose scraped away.” Mr Mahoney said the lack of signage alerting people to the hazardous plant was troubling. “There’s no sign telling people there’s a hazard. Young children run past it every day – what if a kid running with a ball or something falls into it or something? “I’ve contacted Parks Victoria multiple times

since, who assured me signage would be put up, but the only thing they’ve done is put up a sign indicating weed spraying is being undertaken.” Parks Victoria Keilor Plains area chief ranger David Collins confirmed the hazard in an email to Mr Mahoney and said it was unlikely to be eradicated. “The site you refer to has seen a recent flush of growth in this weed due to ground disturbance by rabbits, and the prolonged periods of poor rainfall over the past eight months,” the email stated. “Prior to this flush of growth, this area of park was used for conducting holiday programs that concluded in early Autumn. At that time the presence of this weed was not detected. “I have instructed park staff to implement a weed control program over the coming days … although it is highly unlikely that we will eradicate it, we will reduce its area of cover.” Tate Papworth

Man jailed for failed heroin haul By Ewen McRae A man who tried to import more than six kilograms of heroin hidden with vases from Thailand has been sentenced to eight years jail. Thanh Le plead guilty in the County Court to importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug. The court was told Le imported three packages to an address in St Albans in 2016 that were found to contain 6.19 kilograms of pure heroin – a wholesale value of about $3.12 million.

Between April 1 and June 1, three separate packages which arrived from Thailand were found to have bags of a white substance hidden in their wall cavities. The first two packages remained in police custody, but the third package had the drugs removed and replaced with an inert substance and a listening device. Police then began surveillance at the delivery address in St Albans. Police observed Le visiting the St Albans house eight times on the day of the delivery,

before a police officer posing as a courier delivered the package and Le signed for it. Le was observed taking the package to his home. Police entered the home soon after and found the package locked in a bedroom. The court heard there was also a phone with details for the package and a large red-coloured hydraulic press in the garage to which a drug detection dog displayed a positive reaction. The court heard the press was of a type used to compress heroin into blocks for sale. Le initially denied any involvement in the

first two consignments, but later pleaded guilty to importing all three packages. The court heard Le had become involved in drug importation because of financial difficulties. However Judge Claire Quin said that did not mitigate the impacts of the drugs on the community and a strong message had to be sent to other would-be criminals. “General deterrence has an important role to play to discourage others,” she said. Le will be eligible for parole in 2023.

Removing road blocks Most people take being able to drive for granted, and the Migrant Resource Centre is hoping to make that a reality for more people. The MRC in St Albans runs a driver education program for new migrants, helping them with the practical and theoretical elements of getting out on the road. The program has been running for eight years with the help of VicRoads. Trainer Deng Yong Deng said it had been an invaluable program for newly arrived migrants. “We book it out every time, and have a long waiting list of people who want to get involved,” he said. “We cover ages from 21 up to 80s … for some people having a car makes such a huge difference. It could be the difference between getting a job or not, or even just being able to go grocery shopping with young kids.” With the high cost of driving instructors, the MRC is hoping to secure its own car so participants can practise their driving skills

and rack up the 120 hours necessary to obtain their licence. “We simply don’t have the funding to get enough instructor hours for all our students, so a car would make a huge difference,” Mr Yong Deng said. “The more hours we can give participants, the more confident they can be that when they go to take their driving test that they will pass. “It’s a successful program, but a car would make things so much better.” Ewen McRae

Western suburbs car wreckers are getting their environmental compliance into gear. The Officer for the Protection of the Local Environment (OPLE) program has yielded significant results across Brimbank and Hobsons Bay. Brimbank and Hobsons Bay OPLE Claire Sonego has been visiting car wrecking and scrap metal businesses to get them to reduce stormwater contamination caused by oil and fuel run off. Ms Sonego, who has been visiting businesses since early this year, said many had made changes that would have positive flow-on effects on wetlands. A Williamstown North business was issued a clean up notice and a pollution abatement notice in April. This month, it passed the follow up inspection. “A joint inspection uncovered oil was leaking from skip bins full of engines and seeping into a stormwater pit,” Ms Sonego said. “I issued a clean-up notice to remove the oil on the ground and install controls to prevent oil running into the pit. “The wreckers also backed on to a creek that flows into a nearby marine sanctuary and wetlands conservation reserve, so it was important we got the leak fixed.” Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the program had a vital role in helping the council achieve its environmental goals. “Brimbank has invested significant time and resources to ensure the OPLE officer role is effective and achieves good environmental outcomes,” she said. Earlier this month, the program was extended until July, 2019.

The campaign to increase immunisation rates in Brimbank has a new face. As part of an increased push from the North Western Primary Health Network to get more children immunised, a Fraser Rise family will be featured on campaign posters to be seen in GP waiting rooms and clinics throughout the region. Emily Vosko, whose daughter Mikayla is part of the campaign, said the message was to not let life get in the way of staying up to date with your immunisations. A network spokesperson said that while nearly 95 per cent of parents in Melbourne’s north and west were fully immunising their newborns, the rate dropped to just over 90 per cent for the vaccines given between 12 to 18 months. Ms Vosko said she hoped Mikayla would one day appreciate the important message she helped promote. “It’s such an important campaign and I love that Mikayla is a part of it,” she said. “When she grows up I am sure she will be very proud of the fact that she played a role. “As a parent, I take the responsibility of ensuring Mikayla is as healthy as she can be before she goes to childcare and I hope other parents feel the same.” EMILY VOSKO AND MIKAYLA

Bike lights switched on Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre’s traffic signals are up and running. Taylors Lakes Lions Club president Neil Hunichen said the upgrades were long overdue. “The lights at the centre were originally old truck lights,” he said. “Back 25 years ago, you couldn’t buy LEDs, so we’ve upgraded them to the sort of lights you’d typically see at your normal intersection.” The upgrades, funded through a $5000 TAC grant in 2015, increase visibility at the centre three-fold, helping ensure the children using it gain maximum benefit from the educational experience. The project was a joint effort between the Lions Club, Taylors Lakes Secondary College

and the Bicycle Education Centre. Mr Hunichen said the new lights would play a vital role in road education. “It’s important we teach children road safety and lights are an important part of that,” he said. “The earlier our children learn and respect the rules, the better.” Mr Hunichen is now turning his attention to other upgrades. “We’re considering putting a speed camera or flash when the kids run through a red light,” he said. “That’s something I’d really like to do, but that might just be a pipe dream of mine.” Tate Papworth

Sing a new tune The Brimbank Multicultural Community Choir is looking for new members to freshen up its sound. Musical director Veronica Gauci said the group was seeking a variety of new voices, including baritones, tenors, altos and sopranos. “We have a wonderful group of singers, but we’re looking to boost our numbers,” Ms Gauci said. “Singing together is a wonderful way to enjoy music and meet new people. You don’t need to be an experienced singer – all you need is a love of music and a willingness to join in.” The choir meets regularly during school terms and occasionally performs at events such as a recent Bowery Theatre performance

with Ajak Kwai in St Albans and citizenship ceremonies. Ms Gauci said the choir sang in English as well as a diverse range of languages – including recent performances in Dutch, German, Italian, Maltese, and Tagalog – making it a truly multicultural choir. “Some people can find singing in different languages challenging at first – but we take it slow and most people get the hang of it very quickly,” she said. “It’s always a fun and rewarding experience to master a new piece,” she said. Anger over tip ‘rubbish escape’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey The operators of the Ravenhall landfill could face legal action after rubbish was strewn across neighbouring properties recently. During wild weather earlier this month, garbage escaped from the Cleanaway-operated Melbourne Regional Landfill and on to surrounding land and streets. Winds were measured at 80km/h, but Environment Protection Authority chief executive Nial Finegan said those speeds had been forecast and appropriate action should

have been taken to ensure no rubbish escaped the site. As part of its licence to operate the landfill, Cleanaway must ensure no rubbish escapes its boundary. Stop the Tip campaigner Marion Martin said she was alerted to the “disgusting” sight by another resident on August 10. Ms Martin headed to the landfill, armed with her camera, to take pictures and notify EPA of Cleanaway’s breach of its licence. Six other complaints were made to the EPA. “This [rubbish escape] occurs regularly,”

Ms Martin said. “If you chuck a cigarette butt out of your car or a tissue and somebody dobs you in, you’ll get a hefty fine. But you’ve got a big company like Cleanaway that has all these restrictions and still doesn’t comply with its licence conditions.” Mr Finegan said he and local residents were aghast at what they’d seen. “EPA was very disappointed by the escape of litter at the Ravenhall [landfill] and took immediate action, with an officer on site as soon as possible on the day and the issuing of a statutory notice,”

Mr Finegan said. EPA’s pollution abatement notice requires Cleanaway to repair the fence along Middle Road. “The matter will be considered against EPA’s Compliance and Enforcement Policy,” Mr Finegan said. “This allows for a range of sanctions depending on culpability and environmental harm.” If found guilty of contravening pollution abatement notices, Cleanaway, can be taken to court and fined. Cleanaway was contacted for comment.

Mentors make a case Victoria University and Brimbank schools are joining forces to create future leaders. The university has adopted the Brimbank area for Mix It Up, a leadership, civics and employability training program. Professor Kathy Laster, director of VU’s Sir Zelman Cowen Centre, said the initiative’s early signs were positive. “I’m not sure how many times a university has adopted a local government area and worked intensely with them,” she said. “We’ve got eight of the 10 Brimbank schools involved and have been conducting leadership development, preparing them for careers, public speaking and civic education.” Under the program, working lawyers are mentoring year 10 to 12 students interested in law-related careers. Judges and other members of the legal system have also gone to the schools as facilitators. “Part of the role modelling system is to build

realistic ideas of different paths, to show them a life after school,” Professor Laster said. “We want to show them that opportunities aren’t limited because they’re from the west or if they haven’t got the ATAR score they’d hoped for.” VU students are also involved in the program, which caters for Brimbank’s multicultural make-up. “We try to match the university mentors to students from a different background,” Professor Laster said. “Some of these students are newly arrived in Australia, so having a mentor a few years ahead at university shows them it’s possible to get where they want.” Tate Papworth VU law student Kriti Sharma mentoring year 11 students. I have lived in Brimbank for 11 years. We bought our beautiful old Edwardian home before the real estate boom. Recently we did a renovation and our daughter started school, so we are now planted for the next 20 years or so. What do you like best about the area? The people, the sense of community pride, the diversity, the huge backyards, wide tree-lined streets and the abundance of amazing places to eat. What could make the area better? The traffic congestion drives us all a little nuts. Some more parking would be great. I’d also love to see more public toilets in all the new parks and playgrounds. Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in Brimbank? For a quick coffee I can’t go past the Braybrook STN. For a great child friendly option I love Sadie Black in Albion and for a wine and a good family dinner I can’t fault Sunshine Social. Tell me about your business Chaos to Calm. I specialise in creating understandings and strategies to meet the needs of children with challenging behaviours. I support both families and educators to create more awareness of the different ways to use communication and emotional engagement to make positive

changes in children’s behaviour. I am really passionate about breaking down negative stereotypes surrounding positive parenting education. There is still a real sense of shame associated with asking for help when it comes to our kids, but this actually couldn’t be further from the truth. What does it mean to you to be nominated for the award? Winning this award would be like giving back to myself for all of my energy and hard work. It certainly hasn’t been easy juggling, a business, two young children, a husband and all the while giving so much of myself to other people and their families. I grew up in Mildura and I actually got into quite a bit of trouble as a teenager. Maybe that’s why I ended up working with challenging children. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir welcomes a new kid on the block Lucy Dinknesh is dead; long live Lucy Dinknesh. The much-loved Ethiopian stalwart of the Footscray eats scene has closed its doors. Doubtless that will leave a hole impossible to fill for its many fans. But House of Injera – at the same address – is giving it a good shake. Based on the mostly excellent food we eat during a mid-week visit – and the happy tables around us – House of Injera is destined to be a hit. But this is a rather different enterprise. It’s the first restaurant adventure for the team of Wes and Brod Jackson and Messe Berhe, with the latter (mum of Wes) doing all the cooking. The dining room is a rather chic delight, with low-fi lighting (but still bright enough to see our food), plain yet fetching wooden tables, cushions scattered around and Ethiopian art work adorning the walls. The pungent tang of incense and funky Ethiopian sounds – some even familiar to Bennie and I from my slim collection of Ethio music – are comfort-inducing in a swell way. The House Of Injera menu is a simple, well-written list featuring many dishes with which we are familiar. Though there are a few wrinkles along the way. One is the inclusion of kikel seg, the meat and vegetable soup we adore. My choice is soup, but I let Carnivore Boy Bennie bully me into ordering the lamb ribs. Our lamb ribs ($15) look the part and

Much better are the tibbs-style lamb cubes, onion, carrot and their juices on which the ribs are presented. We order the mistro combo at $20 each – and are knocked-out happy to find it includes a small bowl each of aforementioned kikel seg soup. It is excellent – and there’s a heap of on-the-bone meat submerged in our bowls. We think of it as the Ethiopian take on pho or Jewish penicillin/chicken soup. The rest of our mistro line-up includes wonderful renditions of khay wat, gomen sega and the familiar, always-welcome Ethio mix of beetroot and spuds. The meat in the beef stew that is khay wat is cooked down and easy to eat. The greens of gomen sega come with another wrinkle – more tender on-the-bone meat. We’re far from complaining, as there’s more food served to us than we can eat, but instead of five dishes as part of our mistro combo, we have been served four. No problem at all – and our bill is adjusted accordingly. House of Injera is warmly recommended by CTS.

Testing times for St Albans By Lance Jenkinson It is the calm before a three-week storm for St Albans Saints in the National Premier League 2 west soccer. The in-form Saints had a deserved â€œfreshen upâ€? last week, nursing sore spots emanating from 25 tough rounds of play, but coach Kruni Razov said the team will re-focus at training this week for a crucial stretch of three games that will shape their destiny. The Saints have a hold on second spot on the ladder, but Moreland Zebras, one point behind them, are desperate to take it off them. The two sides will lock horns for 90 tense minutes in a blockbuster at Churchill Reserve this Sunday which could go some way to determining which side finishes in that all-important second spot. If St Albans can win, it will just about secure its spot in the promotion playoffs. A draw would not be the end of the world for the Saints either, knowing they would keep their one-point buffer in second and have their destiny in their own hands. The worst-case scenario â€“ a loss â€“ is what the Saints want to avoid at all costs. â€œTheyâ€™re a very good side, but weâ€™ll be ready for them,â€? Razov said. â€œIf we can win, I reckon weâ€™ve 85 per cent got our foot in that second spot.â€? St Albans has been in spectacular form over the past five weeks. The Saints have won four of their past five games with their only blemish against Melbourne Victory. Razov said a team meeting before the stretch

of positive results was the moment his side vowed to knuckle down and find its peak form. â€œWe sat down about six weeks ago and just said that itâ€™s the time of the season where youâ€™re either contenders or pretenders,â€? Razov said. â€œThe boys set their goals on certain things and I said where we need to improve and what we need to do.â€? While Razov would not elaborate on specifics from the meeting, the most telling statistic since is the defensive one which says the miserly Saints have only conceded two goals in the past five games. Their defence has been superbly led by John Lazaridis, Nana Yaw Otou-Acheampong and Ben Shaper. Antonio Barbaro suffered a season-ending knee injury, which is a huge blow, but the Saints are backing their depth players to cover the loss. Razov congratulated Altona Magic for winning the league title last round. The Magic will have a big say in the fortunes of St Albans and Moreland because they face both sides in the run home. Magic coach Goran Lozanovski said that despite having already sealed the title, he would field as close to full strength teams as possible for the games out of respect to the promotion-chasing sides. In the top tier NPL, Melbourne Knights are just one point outside the top six with two games to play. The Knights will square off with Bulleen Lions in a crucial game on Monday night. Green Gully Cavaliers will go to Hume City on Saturday night desperate to get out of the relegation playoff position.

“We’re trying a few things that we can take into next year and they seem to be working quite well for us, so that’s a positive.” The key to Sunshine Heights’ stronger second half of the season has been selection stability. In the first half of the season, the selectors were making up to six forced changes through injury. But slowly and surely, players returned and the Heights have enjoyed some line-up continuity. The barometer for Sunshine Heights is onballer Justin Zahra. When he is in good form, the rest of the Heights’ players follow his lead.

Poor use of the wind proves costly for Jets Western Jets are ruing “the one that got away” in a six-point loss to Northern Knights in the TAC Cup at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Jets coach Torin Baker was disappointed with his team’s lack of composure when kicking with the wind in the final quarter. Trailing by 16 points at three-quarter time, the Jets had a big opportunity for a come-from-behind win as they had a howling wind at their back, but they could only manage 1.4 as they produced an error-riddled term that cost them the game. “The major aspect was probably our decision making and skill execution in the last quarter,” Baker said. “The wind really got strong in that last quarter, but there was an attacking side of the ground to use and we kicked to the dead side a bit. “You had to play smart and we didn’t play as smart as what we would’ve liked.” It was a costly loss for the Jets as it ended their chances of a top-four finish. The Jets will still play finals, but it will be sudden death all the way. Despite the loss, Jets midfielder Connor Thar showed once again why he should be closely looked at by the AFL recruiters. With Xavier O’Halloran on school football duty with St Bernard’s College, Thar took over the captaincy and led from the front. “It was another excellent performance in what has been a couple of months of real brilliance for us,” Baker said. “I have great trust in his performance each week. “He’s got that good short space speed, rarely gets tackled and is just a good decision maker. “He’s a player that gives himself every chance every week by the way he turns up to play and train.” A pair of Keilor products – Mitchell Hearne and bottom-ager Darcy Cassar – had impressive performances. Hearne was rated the Jets’ best defender on the day for his work in the one-on-one situations and rebound out of defence. Cassar was able to impact in multiple roles from half-forward to midfield and wing. The Jets will round out their home-and-away season with a trip to Bendigo Pioneers on Sunday. Lance Jenkinson

■ I have always believed that the Coach of the Year title should go to the bloke who holds the cup up on grand final day, but that is not always the case as the announcement precedes that one day in September and, like the team of the year, is based on performances in the home and away season. Last year there was a very strong case for Brendan Hallinan of Sunshine to get the gong, especially with his team going within a whisker of premiership glory. Marc Bullen from Deer Park was named, and deserved it, with his team losing only two games during the regular season. This year I am glad not to be part of the panel making the choice because it is a very close call. With one game to go, the top four teams are separated by one loss: Altona (14-3),Hoppers Crossing (13-3-1), Werribee Districts (12-3-2) and Deer Park (13-4). Any one of the four coaches –Saade Ghazi, Steve Kretiuk, Chris Gilham and Marc Bullen – would be a deserving winner. ■ Sunshine’s Brendan Hallinan has announced he is standing down after this weekend. I wish him well and compliment him on a great job with the Kangaroos. This season has not gone according to plan after going so close in 2017. ‘Barney’ might be walking away without a cup, but he has left a mark at the club, which now knows it can win that elusive flag. If it can keep the core of its playing group and maintain that hard edge to its game, a bit of glory might not be far away. ■ Andre ‘The Giant” Meunier is not a household name in Australia but the four-time world kickboxing champion is big news in Asia, where he is one of the star performers on the One Championship circuit. His next bout is October 6 as part of an event billed as the Kingdom of Heroes at Impact Stadium in Bangkok. While he hardly warrants a sideways glance walking through Pacific Werribee, where he first met James Roesler his manager and trainer, it is a different story in Asia where fans line up for selfies and autographs. Andre is in full training at the Ultimate Kickboxing Gym in Hoppers Crossing for his upcoming bout. Famous for being the man Barry Hall didn’t fight in the ring when the former AFL star was contemplating a boxing career, Andre hopes to make his mark overseas, which might give his sport some positive attention closer to home.

Sunshine Heights has left its run too late to figure in the Western Region Football League division 3 finals. The Heights are one of the form teams in the competition after stringing together five consecutive wins, including a shock come-from-behind seven-point win over premiership contenders Wyndham Suns on the road at Goddard Street Reserve on Saturday. But finals were officially ruled out for the red hot Heights when Braybrook locked in fourth place with a win over Laverton. Heights coach Damien Farnfield lamented Laverton’s inability to assist his side’s cause. “We were hoping Laverton was going to help us out and get up against Braybrook, but that wasn’t the case,” he said. While the benefits of Sunshine Heights’ winning run will bear no fruit in the short term, it could have a positive effect beyond this season. The Heights have generated a buzz, the players are growing in confidence and the winning run could make the club a more attractive proposition for recruits. “It’s something – for the current group to go into the pre-season, knowing we can take it up to the top sides,” Farnfield said.

“He’s had an awesome month of football,” Farnfield said. “Most of our form is based on the way he goes about his football.” In Saturday’s win over Wyndham Suns, which Farnfield described as “definitely our best win of the year”, Heights ruckman Jarrad Neilson had a major influence. Neilson rucked one-out all day in tough conditions to secure best-on-ground honours in a game in which his side came back from 17 points down at half-time for a memorable win. Jamie Porter’s three goals in a low-scoring game were massive for Sunshine Heights. In division 1, the merry-go-round among the top five continued in the penultimate round with the big loser being Deer Park. When the music stopped, the Lions found themselves down in third and officially out of the running for the minor premiership. The Lions went down to Werribee Districts by 22 points away at Soldiers Reserve. If the Lions win their final game of the season, against bottom of the ladder Wyndhamvale on Saturday, they will hold a double chance in the finals. Sunshine beat St Albans by 32 points, Caroline Springs kicked one goal in a 33-point loss to Spotswood and Albion failed to register a goal in a 134-point defeat at the hands of Hoppers Crossing.

Falcons hold on for an elimination showdown City West Falcons timed their run for Victorian Netball League championship division finals to perfection. With a win in their final match of the season enough to guarantee a finals spot, the Falcons had everything on the line against the DC North East Blaze on Wednesday night. The Blaze faced the same scenario, making the match a virtual elimination final. Although the Falcons led at every break they couldn’t break the game open, with the result decided in the final few minutes. The Falcons held their composure to win 60-57. Falcons coach Marg Lind said it was a period in the third quarter that proved to be the difference.

“It was a quality game and finals worthy,” she said. “It was a five minute period in the third quarter, we were letting the ball go a bit quicker and we got a run on. “They made a lot of changes and we had a bit more confidence to get out to a six goal buffer. “They came back at us … The last three to four minutes we were able to steady.” Lind said while they were a young side, several players had played together for a number of years and that counted late in the game. The two Falcons shooters shot at 89 per cent accuracy. Lind praised the efforts of goal attack Tahnysha Salanoa

“T is a young goaler and she was able to hold her own under a lot of pressure,” Lind said. “She was able to keep her head up. They threw everything at her.” While finals are normally a pass mark for the Falcons, this year is different according to Lind. The Falcons only got their best line-up on court six weeks ago and have been able to rise up the ladder to finish third. “It is definitely an over achievement,” Lind said. “We’re just happy to get there. “We’re really happy to get a team in finals with the year that we’ve had. “Anything else is a bonus. “It will be tough. There’s four to five quality

sides in the league.” The Falcons play the Hawks in an elimination final on Wednesday night. The winner will play in a preliminary final on Sunday. When the two sides played each other in round 16 the Falcons came out on top, but the Hawks were without star shooter Kim Commane. The championship division side is the only Falcons side through to finals after the under-19 side suffered a heartbreaking 56-55 loss. Bears’ dream run over By Tara Murray Burnside Heights’ dream first season in Essendon District Football League Women’s competition came to a heartbreaking end at the weekend. The Bears, who have been one of the two standout teams, proved no match for the experienced Pascoe Vale which completed the perfect season, winning the grand final 8.7 (55)-0.0 (0). It was an even first quarter on the scoreboard, but then the Panthers blew the game open in the second quarter – they kicked five goals, including three in four minutes to Sarah Theuma – putting the game squarely in their favour. The Bears needed an early goal in the third quarter, but it wasn’t to be. When the rain hit in the last quarter, the Bears switched players around, hoping to make a mark on the scoreboard. The Panthers scored just two goals in the second half, but were able to keep the Bears scoreless to go on to claim the EDFL’s first women’s premiership. Bears coach Brent Thomas said Pascoe Vale had been the better team all year. “Experience shows,” he said. “For a first year side I’m ecstatic to get where we are. “It’ll be a learning curve. Full credit to them.” Thomas said no matter what the result, the Bears were always going to be winners, in their first season together. He put no pressure on them before the game. “I said they’ve already won the premiership.” The group started training more than 12 months ago in preparation for this season. “My first comment [at the beginning of the season] to the girls was I was happy to win a game and that would be wonderful. “One became two, and two became three, and it was what it was. It’s a little bit of history for the club and I’m proud of that.” Thomas said they were let down by a couple of poor quarters at the weekend. He said nerves and a lack of experience got to them, as they didn’t play to their best during the middle quarters. The day was compounded by injuries in the dying minutes, which led to two players being carried from the ground. “The injuries hurt,” Thomas said. “I asked the girls to put their body on the line, and they did that and showed the supporters and club, that they are for real.” Thomas said Maria Afuhaamango, Sina Mason, Isabella Seychell, Brooke Annan-Coeat and Krissy Trang were the side’s best in the loss. Pascoe Vale’s Jessica George was awarded the best on ground medal. Facing another potential finalist in Greenvale, the Blues entered the match on the back of a 10-game winning streak. It was a game worthy of a final, with neither side giving an inch all day. Greenvale led at every break, but by no more than two goals. They had their noses in front at the final siren, claiming a 12.11 (83)-10.12 (72) victory. Matthew Clark and Dean Galea kicked two goals apiece for the Blues. North Melbourne VFL player Nash Holmes played his first game for the year for the Blues and was named their best, alongside Damien Cavka. Eagles seal title with three to go By Lance Jenkinson It has been a dream season for the Western Eagles and particularly for its coach Patrick Mangion. The Eagles earned promotion and locked up the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west title with three games left to play. Rewind the clock to March and only in Mangion’s wildest dreams did he consider he might be at the helm of such a team. Mangion was content with his position of reserves coach at the time, but jumped at the chance to step up into the head coaching role vacated by Danny Krasic. “I didn’t expect that I’d be having this kind of season with the senior team,” Mangion said. “As I was the reserves coach last season, the players all knew me, which made it easier.” Mangion inherited a strong team.
