Plea for medal return By Ewen McRae Retired Indian Army Major-General Ranjit Nadkarni has for years marched in Anzac Day commemorations, proudly wearing the medals of 38 years of service. But a burglary at the 72-year-old’s Delahey home has robbed him of his precious medals and his “identity”. “It gives me a lot of pride to wear my medals on Anzac Day – we are always respected when we march” he said. “It is all part of the common history between Australian and Indian forces … the Indian army had a brigade that fought at Gallipoli.

“Without my medals who is going to recognise me on Anzac Day? Without them, I’m just another old man.” Thieves smashed through the back door of Mr Nadkarni’s house some time on July 14 while he was out for dinner. A number of items were stolen, but it was a briefcase that held his most treasured possessions, including the medals, that hurt the most. He is desperate to see them returned. “Those medals represent many years of service … they are not things that I can replace,” Mr Nadkarni said. “They’re really of no use to anybody – that is what troubles me. What are you going to do with them? They only mean something to the person who has earned them.” Mr Nadkarni had a distinguished career in the Indian Army from late 1965 until 2004, including time spent in active conflict in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 and commanding forces along the India-China border and in the Kashmir region. He also served in a number of counter-terrorism operations. “One of those medals is for distinguished service, which was given to me by the president of India,” Mr Nadkarni said. “There’s also two war medals, two medals for counter-insurgency operations and a number of service medals. “They all have my name printed on the circumference, so they’re quite unique. “The medals mean everything to me because I have earned every one of them.

“They were not just given to me – I earned them through a lot of hard service in hard conditions. “To serve in the Indian army means a lot to me, because in India the army is called out for a lot of work. There are natural calamities that the army works on, and then counter-insurgency operations where the army has been deployed,

so I’ve done the full gamut in my time and it’s been inspiring work.” Mr Nadkarni moved to Australia with his wife after he retired in 2004 and has marched with Indian veterans on numerous Anzac Days. He said the camaraderie and bonds between the Indian and Australian forces were strong,

but without his medals the day would lose its lustre. Mr Nadkarni’s briefcase was found the day after the robbery in a park in Delahey, but it had been burnt. Police are appealing to anyone who may have information to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

Pokies losses hit $380,000 a day By Ewen McRae Brimbank has again recorded the highest losses in the state from electronic gaming machines. According to data released by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation last week, Brimbank recorded more than $139 million in losses from electronic gaming machines in the 2017-18 financial year, a four per cent increase on the previous year. Casey recorded the second highest losses, nearly $8 million lower, while nearby municipalities Melton ($66 million), Maribyrnong ($54 million) and Moonee Valley

($78.5 million) lost significantly less than Brimbank. Brimbank councillor Virginia Tachos said it was time for real change to address the impact of gambling losses in the area. “We’ve held the unfortunate title of having the highest electronic gambling machine losses in Victoria for more than a decade now. It’s a title we want to lose,” Cr Tachos said. “The figures released by the VCGLR show that in 2017-2018, more than $139 million was lost to pokies in Brimbank alone. That equates to $11.5 million a month, or about $380,000 a day. This can’t continue.

“We’ve long been lobbying for better regulation of the gaming industry and continue to partner with the Alliance for Gambling Reform to pursue wider systemic reform.” Brimbank councillors took their fight for change in the sector to the steps of Parliament last week, joining mayors from across the west to call for tighter regulations to reduce future gaming losses. Among a number of reforms, Brimbank council is calling for stricter limits on maximum bets, as well as a reduction in trading hours for gaming venues and more research into the impact of gaming at local levels.

“We want to see the introduction of $1 maximum bets to reduce the amount of money gamblers can lose each time they press a button,” Cr Tachos said. “Currently venues are able to stay open for 20 hours each day, which means community members are able to access pokies virtually around the clock. “There are currently 953 EGMs in Brimbank – the maximum allowable number of machines. “We are calling for a ‘sinking cap’ on EGMs, which would mean that as EGMs are removed from one venue, they would not be replaced in another venue.”

Seussical is a musical based on the children’s stories of Dr Seuss, with most of its plot being based on Horton Hears a Who! St Albans Secondary College teacher Chloe Marie said the annual shows had a proud history at the school. “We’ve been running a production for about 30 years now – there’s always been one,” she said. For this year’s production the school is going

about things a little differently. “This year the kids are running the show,” Ms Marie said. “We have students on stage, in the band as part of the cast, but we also have students running the backstage side of things, as well as front of house. “They essentially run the whole thing and we’re just here to facilitate.” Ms Marie said giving the students ownership of the production had inspired all involved. “Over the years we’ve tried to put an emphasis on student voice. “It gives them a great sense of ownership –

it’s their show and something they can show the community,” she said. “In terms of the backstage, we’re seeing the production gather broader interest. “Not all students want to be on stage and not all students play an instrument, but being part of the backstage team gives them the opportunity to be involved in things like creating sets, ushering, ticket sales and lots of other things.” Seussical will run from August 7-9 with each show beginning at 7pm at the school.

Brimbank council will renew the St Albans Town Centre Special Rate Scheme. The scheme was introduced in 2014 to help fund a program of business-led activities and initiatives encouraging commerce, retail and employment opportunities in the St Albans town centre. At its July meeting, the council decided to continue the scheme for a further five and a half years and expects it to raise more than $700,000. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the renewal was an important way to support the economic development of the St Albans town centre. “St Albans is a vibrant and multicultural centre of which we’re very proud, with a thriving business mix,” she said. “The special rate will continue to make possible an ongoing program of marketing, promotions and business development initiatives to help improve the commercial viability of the town centre.” She said the scheme had reaped benefits for St Albans since being introduced. “This activity included significant events like the St Albans Lunar Festival, Moon Lantern Festival, and participation in the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, which draw tens of thousands of people to the town centre.” Tate Papworth

Land sale tops expectations By Tate Papworth A highly sought-after block of land in Sunshine West has sold for almost $1.5 million. The property at 10-12 Marchant Cresent went under the hammer on Saturday at a highly competitive auction and sold for $1,478,500. Create Vic Real Estate director Steven Tabban said it was a great result for all concerned. “We’re really happy with what the team’s come up with – the price was over what the vendor was expecting,” he said. “The bidding slowed down a little at the end of the auction, but it was a bit of fun. “We were expecting about $1.4 given the interest before the auction, so we’re happy with the result. “I think everyone is a winner here – the vendor got a great price and the purchasers walk away with a great opportunity.” The purchaser declined to comment, but Mr Tabban said the land lent itself to a large development. “This is an amazing opportunity,” he said. “From what we’ve been hearing throughout the campaign, we’re looking at a six or seven townhouse site. It’s an amazing area and the land has been under-utilised for a long period of time.”

Warm welcome for new pals Kings Park Primary School was abuzz with international friendship last week, with the school hosting a group of teachers and pupils from its sister school in Japan. Kings Park has had a partnership with Tenma-Cho Elementary School from Shizuoka, Japan, since 1998, with the schools alternating visits every year. Kings Park pupils last week put on a special assembly for their visitors, showcasing the multicultural make-up of their school before the visitors joined in classes. Teacher Stephanie Cefai said it was a chance to showcase what made their school unique. “We have students from so many backgrounds, so to showcase that to our visitors is really special,” she said. The visitors from Japan visited sites around Melbourne and spent time with host families during their five-day stay. Ms Cefai said the partnership between the schools was a valuable learning tool. “The students get to study Japanese here as a subject, and then they can tie it in by experiencing the culture behind that language,” she said. “It’s a really nice way to bring both communities together.”

Stalking probe

Two stalking incidents in St Albans are being investigated. Police have been told a woman was walking from the St Albans train station on Main Road East about 10pm on June 17 when an unknown man yelled out to her. The man was wearing no pants and harassed the woman before following her for a short time. He approached her on two separate occasions. It is believed the same man, wearing no shoes, harassed a woman walking south along St Albans Road from the railway station on July 7 about 12.30am. The Sunshine Street Band is running jam sessions – and everyone is invited. The band will offer two free drumming workshops at the St Albans Community Centre on Saturday, August 18. Sunshine Street Band member Peter Hinton said the event was an opportunity to give anyone who might be interested in an ensemble the chance to play. “It’ll be designed for people of all skill levels and we’ll start off with some pretty easy beats, which should then turn into a bit of a jam session,” he said. “There are two ways people can enjoy music – one is listening and the other is playing. This is aimed at the people who want to try their hand at playing.”

Mr Hinton said drumming workshops were a natural progression for the band. “We’ve done singing and instrumental workshops and now we’re doing percussion, so we’re covering all bases,” he said. The workshops will take place at 1pm and 3pm. Brimbank flushed with success By Tate Papworth New public toilets are in the pipeline for key locations around Brimbank. Balmoral Park in Derrimut and Selwyn Park in Albion will have toilets installed within two years as part of the council’s public toilet strategy. Green Gully Reserve, Delahey Recreation Reserve and Bon Thomas Reserve are also in line for better amenities. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the final draft of the strategy, adopted at

the council’s recent meeting, balanced the need for adequate facilities with the significant costs associated with installing and maintaining public toilets. She said it outlined a fair and even distribution of public toilets in parks and public places. The strategy includes assessing Brimbank’s suburban parks and activity centres to determine where new or upgraded public toilets are urgently needed. Those identified should be provided within the next four years, subject to budget

approval. “During public consultation, a number of people requested public toilets be installed at Balmoral Park, Derrimut and Selwyn Park, Albion,” Cr Giudice said. “Public toilets are expected to be built at both these locations within the next two years, with further public toilets installed at Green Gully Reserve [replacing an existing public toilet], Delahey Recreation Reserve and Bon Thomas Reserve within the next four years, subject to annual budget approval. “Importantly, this strategy also

recommends that public toilets be designed to cater for people with all abilities and meet our community’s diverse social, physical, cultural and gender needs.” Cr Bruce Lancashire said the strategy was well supported. “This is something that is very much of interest to the local community,” he said. “When we all go to these parks to open them up as playgrounds and other things, inevitably, the question arises as to if there is a toilet or if there’s going to be one, so I’m very pleased to see this adopted.”

School traffic blitz Local police will be cracking down on traffic offences near Caroline Springs and Melton schools. School crossings on Community Hub, Hillside and Hume Drive, Caroline Springs will be patrolled on August 15 and August 21. The roads have been identified by Melton council as being “of particular concern” where there have been several near-misses. Caroline Springs Sergeant Dave Sanders is urging all drivers to be extra vigilant near schools and to heed traffic laws. Police will focus on speeding, mobile phone use, and seatbelt and parking offences. “People are just parking wherever they want,” Sergeant Sanders said. “They’re just pulling up in the middle of the road, double-parking, in no-standing zones … general parking issues.” But of particular concern to police is drivers speeding in school zones, where the speed limit is 40km/h.

Sergeant Sanders said there were lots of vulnerable people, including young children and parents with prams, crossing the road, and urged drivers to be more cautious and heed the speed limits. “We want to protect these young people that might not have good road awareness as older people; we’re trying to look after them.” Once the operation is finished, police will speak with Melton council about its effectiveness with possible plans to expand to more locations. Drivers can be fined hundreds of dollars, and lose several demerit points, depending on the offence. Sergeant Sanders said using phones while driving can incur a $484 fine and four demerit points, while speeding less than 10km/h over the limit can cost $200 and one demerit point. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Dog owner fined for attack By Tate Papworth

Apprentice hits top gear A 23-year-old automotive apprentice is making waves in a male-dominated industry. Bianka Chiodo began working with Mecedes-Benz Melbourne in June last year as a parts interpreter and has made such an impression that she’s been awarded an international scholarship. The scholarship, under the auspices of employment services company WPC, is aimed at promoting cultural and career development and will include a trip to the US in September. Ms Chiodo said she was humbled when she got word she’d been selected. “I actually thought my boss was joking at first when he told me,” she said. “I don’t know a lot about what the trip will involve, but I know we’re going to LA.” Ms Chiodo said making her way in a male-dominated industry had its challenges, but she couldn’t be happier. “I grew up around cars,” she said. “My dad worked at a car yard so they were always something I was interested in. I worked as a diesel mechanic for a while, but I had to leave that place because I was being bullied. I’d go home and cry. “But then I came here and I absolutely love it – the team is so supportive … I love the challenges the job presents.”

A woman has been ordered to pay $13,000 and been placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond after a dog attack in Taylors Lakes. A woman and two small dogs were injured in the attack on a walking track along Taylors Creek, off Reed Crescent, about 10am on April 22. Sunshine Magistrates Court last month heard that a woman and her husband were walking their three dogs on leads when a large German shepherd attacked their Chihuahua and another dog. The woman intervened and suffered injuries to her face and hand. She received medical treatment for her injuries. The two small dogs were treated at a local veterinary clinic. One of the dogs suffered a broken spine, broken ribs and puncture wounds while the other received multiple puncture wounds. Brimbank council said the owner of the German Shepherd pleaded guilty to allowing a dog to attack and bite a person causing a serious injury to the face and hand requiring medical attention; and two counts of allowing a dog to attack and bite an animal causing serious injury requiring veterinary attention. She also pleaded guilty to allowing a dog to be outside owner’s premises and not secured and confined during daytime; and failing to apply to register a dog being over three months. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the court decision served as a timely reminder. “Responsible pet ownership is extremely important to Brimbank council and our community,” Cr Giudice said. “The success of this prosecution is also a reminder to everyone that there are legal consequences if your dog attacks another person or animal.”

Green credentials on the rise By Tate Papworth The Brimbank council will review its 10-year strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning the municipality to a low carbon city. The council endorsed a mid-term review of the Revised Greenhouse Reduction Strategy 2013-2023 during its July meeting and said it intends to implement a range of energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said

it was important that the council continued implementing innovative projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that not only benefit the environment, but also deliver cost savings. “We’re determined to continue our drive to reduce emissions and support climate change action in Brimbank,” Cr Giudice said. “Under this strategy, we’re reducing resource use and costs across Brimbank with projects including street lighting changeover to LED lights, energy efficiency upgrades, transitioning our council fleet vehicles to renewable energy

sources and installing solar energy systems in council facilities. “We are also delivering programs that assist residents and businesses to improve energy efficiency and access affordable solar energy systems for their rooftops.” The council said it has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 24 per cent since 2013, and is almost halfway towards its target of a 50 per cent reduction by 2023. “As a responsive council, we are committed to creating a more sustainable Brimbank and

achieving a downward shift in our greenhouse emissions,” Cr Giudice said. While the council’s emissions are reducing, it said the level of greenhouse emissions from the Brimbank community was growing. A council officer report stated that strong collaboration was needed to reduce community emissions. Pies shed poker machine venues By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Collingwood Football Club is leaving the poker machine industry, confirming it has sold its Caroline Springs and Ringwood venues. Melbourne Racing Club bought the licences for The Club in Caroline Springs and The Coach and Horses in Ringwood, taking over 156 gaming machines. Settlement is expected to take place some time between October and December. Collingwood is the second AFL club to leave gaming with the Melbourne and Geelong clubs set to follow suit. Alliance for Gambling Reform spokesman Stephen Mayne said the pressure to move on from poker machines was now on Essendon, which is negotiating with Melton council to extend its lease of the Melton Country Club. “This is a very potent statement from Collingwood,” Mr Mayne said. “An iconic institution is telling the community they no longer wish to be associated with the toxic pokies … there will be a domino effect.” The Club will continue operating as a poker machine venue, but Mr Mayne said Collingwood’s decision was sending a strong message to the community and could have statewide implications. Collingwood president Eddie McGuire described the move as “prudent”, and one that would allow the club to look at new revenue streams.

“The forensic review of the entire Collingwood operation last year, and the ‘Forever’ blueprint which came out of it, gave us greater clarity and a renewed sense of purpose but also identified numerous opportunities,” Mr McGuire said. “The decision of the board to sell our gaming operation and some of our hospitality interests will allow us to intensify the focus on our core responsibilities – Collingwood fans, elite sporting performance and community – but also enable us to pursue new and different possibilities for growth.

United in learning Solving global hunger may not be part of the average school day, but last week a group of Deer Park students did their best. Students from Victoria University Secondary College took part in a model United Nations, filling the roles of 28 member nations as they debated ‘Zero Hunger: Addressing Global Poverty and Universal Food Security’ and tried to pass a resolution to satisfy everyone. Organising teacher Kristy Muratore said the day was the culmination of many weeks of work by the schools year 8 to 10 AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students. “It’s really supported the students’ skills in

public speaking and debate,” Ms Muratore said. Professor Ian Howie from the United Nations Association of Victoria acted as the Secretary General on the day, and said the diversity of opinions made for some vigorous debate. “There were countries as diverse as North Korea, Yemen, Syria, and then major members of the security council like China and the US, so there’s a wide diversity of opinion,” he said. “I thought it was pretty close to how the actual United Nations is run.” Ewen McRae

MY BRIMBANK Abraham Pitros left Iraq and moved to Australia 12 years ago. His Sunshine North business, Bakhdida cafe and restaurant has become a gathering place for Brimbank’s Middle Eastern community. He spoke with Tate Papworth.

I moved here 12 years ago. I lived in Iraq for 12 years. We left there and stayed in Syria for a while before coming over to Australia in 2008.

getting them all here as a gathering place for the community has been really fantastic to see. When I first opened it wasn’t too busy, but it’s been steadily growing and now we have people of all nationalities coming in to eat.

What do you like best about the area?

What sort of food do you serve?

I’ve always been in Brimbank since I moved over and have loved it. When you make a home in an area you grow to love it, make friends and that’s what I love about it.

Everyone can expect delicious, traditional Middle Eastern food. On a Friday we have a special dish called paskha which has been very popular. We’ve had people coming in especially for that dish.

What could be done to improve the area? I think we need more public transport out here. It would not only benefit the community, but it would also help businesses. For example, if we had more public transport options out here, people could stay longer and not worry about getting home by a certain time.

Tell me about your journey to Australia. I lived in Iraq for 12 years. We left there and stayed in Syria for a while before coming over to Australia in 2008. I worked and studied in Syria and then in 2008 I got a visa to Australia and I’m now a citizen.

Tell me a little about your restaurant.

Was leaving Iraq a tough decision?

The restaurant is named after my village, Bakhdida, which is located in the north of Iraq. There’s a big Iraqi community out here and

Get creative: Short Story Competition

Cr Bob Turner Council was delighted when we were advised that we’d been successful in obtaining significant funding boosts for key community infrastructure projects in Eynesbury and Diggers Rest. The Federal Government awarded $2.84 million from its Building Better Regions Fund to help construct stage one of the long-awaited Eynesbury Recreation Reserve. The project will deliver a sporting reserve, along with an adventure playground, BBQ facilities and walking paths. We also anticipate the reserve will be used as a training facility for the Eynesbury Football Club. The State Government also announced that Council would receive $100,000 to upgrade lighting on one of the ovals at the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve. Council will match the State Government funding for this project, which will see existing infrastructure

removed and replaced with lighting which meets Australian standards. This is a wonderful outcome for the Diggers Rest Football and Netball Club, who have demonstrated steady growth over recent years, and proven to be strong advocates of female participation in sports. Finally, I’d like to remind all our budding storytellers that the annual Melton Libraries Short Story Competition is now open. Our community has changed considerably since I was first elected to Council nearly 20 years ago. Five men and one woman have appeared in Sunshine Court during the last two weeks on a total of 75 charges of stealing goods from houses and factories in Sunshine and the immediate area. Total value of the goods stolen is estimated by Sunshine CIB to be between $50,000 and $60,000.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds an old favourite back with force Vietnamese tucker is pretty much the heart and soul of western suburbs food. Yet so deeply interwoven is it into all our lives, it’s a bit easy to take it for granted. Not that we don’t eat it regularly and even weekly. We do. But when it comes writing and posting about it, well not so much in recent times. So it gives me giddy pleasure to wax enthusiastically, passionately about Co Thu Quan. The original version of this eatery was tucked away in Little Saigon Market, becoming one of the victims of that institution’s sad, fiery demise. Now – after opening branches in Richmond and the CBD – they’re back! There have been changes. The original Co Thu Quan was all about snack-style street food. This new place, done out in dark wood and all abuzz with zippy, cheerful service, has a vastly expanded menu. Instead of light snacks there’s a plethora of noodles, salads, vermicelli, rice, soups and much, much more. And it’s all – or almost all – cheap, cheap, cheap. Think under $15. And while you can order pho here, there are so many other glittering, intriguing choices, it would be folly to do so. Here, by their many dozens, are dishes you’ll not find elsewhere in Footscray or the west.

CO THU QUAN Address: Shop 11-12, 10 Droop Street, Footscray Phone: 9689 1451 Hoi an chicken rice ($12) is a simple, light, refreshing and superbly enjoyable take on the universal chook/rice combo. There’s a lot more shredded chicken atop that rice than the photo suggests. Clear shrimp dumplings ($10) are wobbly parcels stuffed with shrimp and ground pork. They’re fun to eat, but a tad shy of the flavor explosions I was anticipating. Nat enjoys slurping on his water spinach crab noodles ($12). Immersed in its chicken broth and freshwater crab paste are rice noodles, pork and crab meatball, pork sausage, fried tofu, tomato, water spinach, congealed pork blood, topped with fried shallot and green onion; tamarind sauce on the side. For me, Vietnamese crab noodle soup is an uncharacteristically rash choice. It costs $27 – a ridiculous amount to pay for a single bowl of soup noodles. But I utterly adore it and have no regrets. Fresh crab of this quality is usually only consumed in communal settings, so I revel in my singular enjoyment of the chunky shellfish bits. But just as good is the hearty, delicious chook/crab soup in which the tapioca noodles, a single prawn and fresh mushrooms happily swim.

SPORT Thunder impresses in first Big V season Meanwhile, respect is a word that could also be associated with Keilor Thunder after its first season in the men’s state championship. The Thunder had a disappointing final weekend, going down twice in a double header, but with an 8-14 record, they were certainly no pushover this season. On Saturday night, Keilor travelled to Werribee and could not get going offensively. The Thunder lost 61-50 at Eagle Stadium with imports Jordan Coleman (19 points, six rebounds) and Hanner Mosquera-Perea (14 points) the only real offensive threats. In their home closer on Sunday, Keilor was beaten 92-80 in by the Hawthorn Magic. The Magic won in the overtime period 16-4 to run out 12-point victors. Coleman was again at the forefront for the Thunder with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Jeff Crowe had 16 points and seven rebounds. Lance Jenkinson

Lake steadies the ship By Lance Jenkinson Brian Lake was back in a Caroline Springs jumper for the first time since returning from his much-publicised trip to Japan. Lake made headlines in recent weeks after being detained by Japanese authorities following an incident in Osaka last month. The 36-year-old former AFL star addressed the trip with his Caroline Springs teammates when he returned to the club and was unanimously welcomed back into the fold. “He’s obviously gone through some hard times,” Lakers football manager Marc Raak said. “He came to the club and spoke to the club about exactly what happened, his side of the story. “He spoke to the players as well and said this is what’s happened to me, these are the circumstances and we’ve accepted that and moved on.” Lake was superb for Caroline Springs in his return game in a 24-point win over Wyndhamvale in the Western Region Football League division 1 at Wyndham Vale South Oval on Saturday. More importantly, Lake relished the chance to be back playing among his mates again. “The good thing about footy clubs is that you can leave things behind at the door,” Raak said. “You go and play footy and it’s a bit of a release on life I suppose. “I could see him enjoying it today and it’s a credit to him how he’s handled himself since he’s been back.” Lake had a steadying effect over Caroline Springs with his work in the defence. It was his first game for the Lakers since April 21, though he was still match fit as he played abroad. “Having Brian back in the backline steadied the ship a little bit,” Raak said. Caroline Springs took another step forward as a top-flight club. The Lakers have won three of their past five matches and four this season. “We’ve now won four games for the year, which is double the amount of games we won last year,” Raak said. “We said the first year was about staying in division 1, the second year was about growing and getting more wins and we’ve done that now. “If we can sneak another win in, we’ll be absolutely delighted.” Caroline Springs found Wyndhamvale a tough nut to crack. The Lakers’ fast start, where they kicked out to a 29-point quarter-time lead, was crucial, as Wyndhamvale kept snapping at their heels. “It’s always hard going down there to

IN THE DOGHOUSE it or loathe it, there are rule changes coming to Aussie rules football. I do think the game at the elite level has some issues to deal with, it can be excruciating to watch at times. Then you get games like the recent Geelong v Melbourne or Richmond v Collingwood – a great spectacle and an enthralling contest. I have switched off a lot of games this year for several reasons including poor skills, one-sided contests, cringeworthy, unintelligent commentary and a game of little consequence or interest. The AFL was looking at introducing some rule changes in several of the final games of the season that have no bearing on finals spots. This is not going to happen and rightly so. There is another suggestion to do the trial at VFL level, which is incredibly arrogant, and dismissive of a competition that has been around since 1877. The AFL might run the game but a direction of this kind, to any other competition, is nothing short of bullying. Personally, I want to see more kicking and marking in our game at all levels. The less it looks like rugby, and executes like soccer, the better it is to watch. I love both soccer and rugby league but a hybrid of the three codes has little interest for me as a spectator. There is nothing in the AFL rules that can make bad teams play well. I am not sure if that problem is fixable. Also, did anyone else notice the most likely rule change is the 6-6-6 rule? Hope it does not favour the Demons too much.

junior finals start this week, a great reward for all players involved, as well as the coaches, volunteers, club officials and the parents. It is also a timely reminder that it is a game, and winning and losing is part and parcel of what happens. Scenes of ugly parent and crowd behaviour in recent years has detracted from the achievements of the children playing the game. This is a time for celebration, regardless of the result of the game. There is no excuse for anti-social behaviour. Also a reminder to the players to win with humility and lose with dignity. Be ultra competitive but shake hands at the end and savour the moment, there is no guarantee you will be there again.

In the seniors, many are still talking about the Hoppers Crossing comeback last week, almost doubling its score in the last quarter to share the points with Werribee Districts. Earlier in the year one point separated the teams. Can’t wait to see if they meet in the finals.

Keilor Thunder has earned the respect of the Big V basketball women’s state championship. It was a tough task for the Thunder to convince headquarters to be part of the top-flight competition, but they eventually got the green light and proved they belong. The Thunder rounded out the campaign with a 77-69 loss to playoffs-bound Southern Peninsula Sharks at Keilor Basketball Stadium on Saturday. Keilor was slow out of the blocks to trail Southern Peninsula by 11 at quarter-time, but fought back to get within three points at half-time. In an arm wrestle in the third, the Thunder edged closer, trailing by just one point at three-quarter time, but the Sharks finished the game stronger to win by eight. Erin Bollmann completed a dazzling first season as Keilor import with a huge 21-point, 16-rebound game. Briana Babic (11 points) and import Kailyn Williams (10 points, six assists) were also influential for the Thunder.

Caroline Springs keen to stop Storm’s march

In most other competitions, Caroline Springs would be the raging hot favourite for the premiership. In the Western Region Football League senior women’s, Caroline Springs is just one of the chasing pack trying to catch up with ladder-leader Manor Lakes. Caroline Springs is 9-1 with the huge percentage of 804.62 per cent – a number that would normally see you sitting in first place. However, Manor Lakes has produced an out-of-this-world season so far – the Storm are 9-0 and on 2997.44 per cent. Caroline Springs coach Anthea Stathakis said her side learnt a lot when the top two teams squared off just a month ago. Much of what the Lakers have done at training since has been centred on redemption in this Saturday’s re-match at Town Centre Oval. “I think that it’s going to be a real blockbuster between us and Manor Lakes,” Stathakis said. “I’m not going to give too much away, but we’re

working on a few things to try and shut down their midfielders and forwards. “I’m confident the girls are going to give 100 per cent.” While it has not been enough to dislodge the top side, Caroline Springs could hardly have played any better in the opening 10 rounds. The Lakers have averaged more than 100 points per game and conceded on average just 13 points per game. “The girls have had a really good season,” Stathakis said. “The biggest issue you have when you’re beating teams by big margins, you don’t want the girls to become complacent, but they understand that. “The girls know there’s no slacking off. “We’ve got our goals for the remainder of the season and hopefully the ultimate prize at the end.” Alexandra Fato has been the standout for Caroline Springs. A fearless onballer, Fato has been named in the Lakers best players in every game this season.

“I reckon she’s the best midfielder in the competition,” Stathakis said. “She’s got great game sense, a beautiful kick and she’s very smart with her decisions.” Caitlin Pretty has been the focal point in attack for Caroline Springs. Pretty has kicked 42 goals, including 18 in a single game, but could well have had more had she been used as a stay-at-home forward. “I do rotate her between the positions, but she’s probably one of the best forwards in the league and shows it when she’s up there,” Stathakis said. Caroline Springs’ defence has been watertight. The Lakers have kept opponents scoreless on four occasions. Captain Alisha Jamieson has marshalled the defence with aplomb, while Amy Searle has been good one-on-one. Emma Payne and Cassie Wilson have racked up the possessions across half-back. Eagles promotion blow By Lance Jenkinson Keilor Park failed a set piece inquisition in a 2-0 loss to Preston Lions in a Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 blockbuster at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday. The Eagles were unlocked on two occasions by goals directly from corner situations, the first a sweetly placed rising header and the sealer coming from a goalmouth scramble. For the in-form Eagles and club president Paul Portelli, it was a disappointing way to see their three-game winning streak come to an end. “They had too much tall timber and we just couldn’t handle it,” Portelli said. “They got a great header for the first goal where he got in front of our defender and headed it in. “The second one, we had a couple of chances to clear it, but the ball just ricocheted around and they put it away. “It was a little bit disappointing to concede twice from set pieces.” The game had the quality expected from a second-versus-third clash. Keilor Park, superbly led by hard-working midfielder David Prosia, had the better of the early chances, but failed to cash in. Once Preston settled, the game was played mainly on its terms, though Keilor Park defender Michele-Emmanuele Crazia was often a road block who did not allow Preston a goal from open play. “They’re a really good side and we battled away, but they were just too good for us in the end,” Portelli said. “We had a couple of half chances early in the game and if we got the early goal, it would’ve put a bit of pressure on them. At the end of the day, I think they were the better side.” Keilor Park’s promotion hopes have suffered a major blow. The Eagles are six points behind ladder leader Geelong with five rounds remaining. In a topsy-turvy season full of surprises, Portelli is not ruling out his side just yet. “We’re still there, we’re still battling and hopefully a couple of results go our way and we might get back up there again,” he said. But Portelli knows that Keilor Park must return from Sydenham Park on Friday night with all three points if it wants to make a late run. The Eagles will have to buck the trend, though, because Sydenham’s home ground, Keilor Lodge Reserve, has not been a happy hunting ground for them in recent years. “We’ve got to break a hoodoo down there because we haven’t won a game there for a while,” Portelli said. “We’ve got to get it done because every game from now on end is like a grand final.” Elsewhere in men’s state league 1, North Sunshine Eagles got the better of Sydenham 56 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 31, 2018

Cavs endure a dismal July

Brimbank Stallions ended the weekend on top of men’s state league 2 after a 1-1 draw with Corio. Cairnlea moved to within three points of the top with a 3-1 win over Geelong Rangers, while Westgate missed its chance to go equal top after losing 3-1 to Fitzroy City. Western Eagles are the team to beat in men’s state league 4.

The Eagles are a whopping eight points clear on top after a 5-0 mauling of Balmoral. Robert Chelchowski and Mateusz Kowalski fired in doubles for the Eagles. Spring Hills is just three points outside the promotion places after a 5-1 trouncing of Surf Coast. In women’s state league 1, Keilor Park had no joy in a 4-0 loss to Melbourne University. St Albans beat Point Cook 3-1 in women’s state league 3. The Saints remain three points clear in second spot.

Green Gully will be keen to turn the calendar – and fast. The Cavaliers’ disastrous July has put them into freefall in National Premier League soccer. Four games resulted in four losses as the Cavs tumbled to 10th. A 2-0 defeat to title contenders Bentleigh Greens at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Friday night rubbed further salt into the Cavs’ wounds. Green Gully scored one goal for the whole month. The Cavaliers also failed to take advantage of their home comforts, losing all three games at Green Gully Reserve. Perhaps the only positive for the Cavs is that July is over and August is here. Four points outside the top six, Green Gully must win against South Melbourne at home this Friday night to keep its finals hopes alive. Melbourne Knights are also outside the top six after a topsy-turvy month. The Knights had a win, a draw and two losses in July, leaving them in seventh. A disappointing 2-1 loss to third-last Kingston City at Knights Stadium on Sunday saw the Knights relinquish their spot in the top six. Captain Marijan Cvitkovic provided an equaliser for the Knights before half-time, but Damien Iaconis scored a second-half winner for Kingston. The Knights have a tough away game against high-flying Avondale at the Reggio Calabria Club on Saturday. In women’s NPL, Calder United came back from a goal down to beat Bayside United 3-1 at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Sunday. Calder remains four points in arrears of ladder leader South Melbourne. Hillside finds form at the right end of the season Hillside kept its finals hopes in its own hands with an upset win against Airport West in Essendon District Football League division 1. Following some strong performances against some of the top sides in recent weeks, the Sharks put it all together on Saturday. There wasn’t much in it in the first half, before the Sharks put the burners on in the third quarter to open up a 33-point lead at the last break. It was a dour last quarter, but it didn’t matter, the Sharks had done enough to win, 13.13 (91)-8.10 (58). Sharks football manager Darren Mantynen said they had been building to this performance in recent weeks.

“We’ve got a few players back and there’s only about two players out of the best 22. “A loss here and it would have been pretty difficult. “We pretty much controlled the game all day with our pressure. They got lucky with a few goals. Our third quarter was really good.” Jordan Sinclair and Mitchell Church kicked three goals each for the Sharks. Mantynen said Victor Micallef and Jeremy Hayes were among the standouts, along with Joel Bonnici. Bonnici had the job on Eagles star Tyson Young and restricted him to two goals and kicked one of his own. Mantynen said they were really starting to find a spread of goalkickers, meaning

they weren’t relying on Church and Brandon Coletta. Coletta, who hasn’t played for three weeks, is out with a knee injury. Mantynen said Coletta would be touch-and-go to be back for finals. The win was the Sharks’ first against a top-three side this season. However, they remain in fifth spot, two points outside the top four. Mantynen said if they can win their remaining two games against East Keilor and Jacana they should be in a good spot heading into a final round bye. After missing out on finals a couple of years ago when they needed results to go their way in a final round bye, they’re keen for it not to happen again.

“If we win the next two, it hopefully secures us a spot in the top four,” Mantynen said. “We’ve hit form at the right time of the year and hopefully we can do what Airport West did last season and come from fourth and play in a grand final. “The focus is winning the next two games.” In division 2, Burnside Heights lost to Moonee Valley, 26.16 (172)-13.7 (85). The Fog blew the game open in the second quarter with six goals to two and then continued that in the second half. Roos to shape final five By Lance Jenkinson One kick away from a premiership last season, Sunshine Kangaroos will almost certainly not even feature in the Western Region Football League division 1 finals this September. To stay alive in the finals race, the sixth-placed Kangaroos realistically needed to beat fifth-placed Spotswood at McLean Reserve on Saturday. But they came away empty-handed after a 34-point loss. With the Kangaroos two-and-a-half games outside the top five with four rounds to go, coach Brendan Hallinan conceded his side’s finals hopes were dashed. “This was it,” he said. “We built this game up to be a final. “If we had won this game, it would put us in a position where we’d be right back in the mix. “Mathematically, I’d guess there’s still a small chance, but I wouldn’t even know what that is now.” Sunshine generated a buzz of excitement in the pre-season after going so close to breaking up Deer Park’s domination of the competition in last year’s grand final classic. Yet while the Kangaroos were tipped to give the competition a shake, they have barely threatened this campaign.

“One year you’re playing like we were last year and the next year we’re decimated with injuries and just trying to make the most of a season,” Hallinan said. Sunshine will take steps in the final month of the season to shape a revival for next season. The Kangaroos will continue to look at the youngsters such as Harrison Minett, Jordan Davis and Patrick O’Brien, who have stepped up admirably amid all the injuries. They will assess the futures of some of the senior players. “There’s excitement around the club knowing we’ve got a few of those kids coming through,” Hallinan said. “At the end of the year, there will be a clean out of sorts. There will probably be a few retirements and we’ll re-shape the list.” Finals might be a bridge too far, but Sunshine is keen to round out the season on a high. They will go in as underdogs against in-form Hoppers Crossing this Saturday at Hogans Road Reserve, but will start as favourites against Albion, St Albans and Caroline Springs. The Kangaroos beat all of those teams in the first half of the season. Even four wins may not be enough to get Sunshine to the finals, with Spotswood only needing to win two in a soft run home. “We’ve got a few returning next week, so we’re going to load up against Hoppers

Crossing and try and shape the five as best as we can,” Hallinan said. “We want to go out with a sense of pride. We don’t want tails between the legs and feeling sorry for ourselves … we don’t want anyone feeling sorry for the Sunshine Football Club. “We’re not taking the foot off the pedal – we’re going to finish off strong.” In other division 1 games, Deer Park slaughtered Albion by 139 points to solidify its spot at the top of the ladder. Chris Stewart continued his goalkicking form for the Lions with six majors. St Albans put up a great fight against finals-bound Altona before losing a low-scoring affair by seven points. In division 2, Albanvale lost by 110 points to North Footscray. The Cobras face an improbable task in their bid to avoid the wooden spoon. In division 3, Sunshine Heights pipped Laverton by six points to keep its mathematical finals chances alive. North Sunshine was mauled by 129 points by Tarneit, which is fast becoming a premiership threat. Braybrook was steamrolled by Point Cook Centrals by 108 points. Burnside Heights got out of jail against the Sunbury Kangaroos in the Essendon District Football League Women’s qualifying final on Sunday. The Kangaroos pushed the Bears all the way, with the Bears not hitting the front until the last 10 minutes. Once they hit the front, the Bears stayed there, winning 6.7 (43)-5.9 (39). Bears coach Brent Thomas gave full credit to the Kangaroos. “They put numbers behind the ball, which caught us out and they totally changed up their structures. We had to coach that game of football to win.” Thomas said the biggest thing for his players was getting their mindset right when not necessarily playing their best. He said it was the experienced players who stood up when it was required. The Bears kicked the last two goals of the game and were able to keep the ball in their 50 after hitting the front. “The Kangaroos came out of the blocks and we knew they would come after us,” Thomas said. “It was about belief. “We really had to make some moves to counter that. We weren’t on our game today, so we had to fight through that game mentally, so full credit to my girls.” The other key was fitness, with the fruits of the Bears’ big pre-season on show. Thomas said they didn’t really have any standouts, with all players doing what was needed. “I don’t think we had a spectacular player,” he said “Our top six players, our top-tier players, all made the one per centers happen – little, short handballs, creating opportunities and knowing where to run. “I put one of my key forwards back and she knew the role straight away and what to do.” The win means the Bears are through to the preliminary final and have a week off. Thomas said the week off wasn’t necessarily a good thing, as the side had just come off a two-week break. In the past four rounds, the Bears had two teams forfeit against them and then there was a bye before the finals. Thomas said they would focus on staying together as a team before their next match.
