Off to see the wizard A journey with Dorothy and her friends down the yellow brick road awaits these school holidays. Watergardens Town Centre is bringing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s much-loved production of The Wizard of Oz to life with a glittering costume display from the Australian production. Watergardens senior marketing manager Julie Watson said there were a number of exciting outfits on display. “We’ve got the Tin Man’s shiny metal suit and Dorothy’s sparkling ruby slippers,” Ms Watson said. While the costumes are the main attraction, Ms Watson said there will also be Wizard of Oz activities. “This costume exhibition will run alongside other school holiday activities, including a Wizard of Oz meet and greet where kids and parents can meet Dorothy and the Tin Man,” Ms Watson said. “We’ll also have a Wizard of Oz craft village.” Activities will run from 11am to 2pm daily during the school holidays. Toxic shock for Brimbank By Tate Papworth Brimbank council is seeking urgent assurance that community safety is not at risk after Melbourne Airport confirmed contamination caused by toxic chemicals has spread beyond its boundaries. The council was recently made aware of a contamination issue concerning per-and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), historically used in firefighting foams at the airport.

Cr John Hedditch said it was imperative the council and the community were made aware of the full extent of the contamination. “There are nasty things in our waterways … this is a major problem, and we don’t know to what extent. The community has told us they can’t get answers either,” Cr Hedditch said. “It is unclear just how far the contamination has spread, and that is just not good enough. “We want the federal authorities and the EPA to tell us who has responsibility for this, and what’s going on.

“We need this issue resolved at the earliest.” The health effects relating to exposures to mixtures of PFAS are a matter of debate, however major health studies have linked it to a number of diseases, including cancer. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the council would write to the EPA as well as state and federal ministers to request the release of longitudinal data on the health of the Maribyrnong River, Steele Creek, Steele Creek North and Arundel Creek. “We want an understanding of how long

federal and state governments have known about the presence of PFAS at Melbourne Airport, and about how local residents and waterway groups are being kept informed of remediation action,” Cr Giudice said “Importantly, we want confirmation of which agency is taking responsibility for the oversight of the clean-up of PFAS at the airport.” Star Weekly contacted Melbourne Airport for comment. Sunshine left holding the babies By Tate Papworth and Charlene Macaulay Sunshine Hospital says it’s ready to lend a hand to neighbouring hospitals buckling under the strain of high demand on their maternity services. Werribee Mercy Hospital is booked out for December, with pregnant women being directed elsewhere. Sunshine Hospital operations executive director Natasha Toohey said her hospital was ready to offer support. “Maternity services across Melbourne work

together to ensure the needs of patients are paramount,” she said. “Sunshine has strong demand for its services, but we are happy to support other maternity services where we can.” Werribee GP Dr Joe Garra slammed the state government last month for failing to boost funding for maternity services at Werribee Mercy Hospital as part of the hospital’s $85 million expansion. “Maternity is not an elective procedure. We don’t want women having … to drive in labour to Sunshine,” Dr Garra said. “There will be babies popping out on the Ring Road. There

of construction,” she said. “When it opens in the first half of 2019, it will assist Sunshine Hospital, which is experiencing an ongoing high demand for maternity services. “This hospital will also allow more women and families in Melbourne’s west access to inand out-patient services closer to home and provide an important boost to facilities for pregnant women and their families.” Sunshine Hospital was one of the big winners out of this year’s state budget, allocated to receive $29.6 million for a new emergency department it says will significantly boost its capacity to provide services.

New chapter for Lakes’ students Year 10 media studies students at Taylors Lakes Secondary College are celebrating the completion of a project with a difference. As part of their major assignment, the class had to create a unique production, and this year’s students took a new approach. “Generally we do a film, but this time we wanted to play around with a children’s storybook,” teacher Jessica Skogstad said. “We spoke with a local special school and asked about the kind of things they look for and tried to stick with those.

“It’s [the book] based around concepts like independence, sharing and self discovery. “We worked on it all semester and it’s now in pre-sale.” Year 10 student Elizabeth Cocolaras came up with the story concept. “This particular book is about an apple wanting to go on an adventure and be independent, so he leaves his bowl and all his fruit and family and explores the world,” Ms Cocolaras said. “I came up with the idea pretty quickly and it went from there. It was really

good to experience working with new people and finding out their talents.” Student Aaron Bahmondos worked on illustations for the book. “I’m a fan of Adult Swim, so I got to take inspiration from some of my favourite shows like Rick and Morty, which was really cool,” he said. Brimbank council is calling on local residents, employees and visitors to help improve local town centres across the municipality. The council is urging the community to share what is most important to them about their local town centre by taking a five-minute online survey on the ideal town centre. The surveys are designed to improve the vibrancy and character of town centres across Brimbank. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said community input is an important factor when it comes to determining the future shape and look of Brimbank’s town centres. “This is an opportunity for our community to have their say on what matters most to them about the look and feel of their local town centre,” Cr Giudice said. “Knowing what is important to our community helps council plan for the future … including improvements to streets, public spaces and amenities. “We want to create vibrant, welcoming and safe town centres and much-loved areas that are important to our community and visitors alike.” The online survey is open until 5pm on Monday, July 23. Cash call to help west catch up By Tate Papworth Brimbank needs urgent help across a range of areas to bring its “considerably poorer outcomes” up to par with Melbourne averages, the council says. The council said urgent “catch up” investment is needed across health, education and jobs – as recommended in the recent West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA) Economic Development Strategy. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the council would write to major political parties

seeking commitments to fund a range of catch-up programs. “The WoMEDA report – overseen by senior community leaders in Melbourne’s west and chaired by former premier Steve Bracks – acknowledges that we have a real problem with ‘considerably poorer’ health, education and jobs outcomes in this community, compared with Melbourne averages,” Cr Giudice said. “It is time for our state and federal governments to invest in the west. “Council has a strong focus on advocating for investment to address significant health,

wellbeing and social challenges facing our community. “The WoMEDA strategy recommendations support council’s calls for investment to meet challenges across education, health and jobs participation.” The strategy aims to bring the west up to Melbourne’s averages by introducing an independent West of Melbourne Education Performance Monitor. It will also implement five-year targets for the departments of health and of education. Cr John Hedditch raised a motion at last

month’s council meeting, imploring the council to push hard for change. “We have a lot to do in terms of catch-up – we need five-year catch up programs to bring health, education and jobs outcomes up to Melbourne’s averages,” Cr Hedditch said. “The report finally acknowledges we have a problem with outcomes in this community – outcomes where west of Melbourne averages are below that of Melbourne. “Now we have the opportunity to go and advocate for the sets of outcomes in this strategy and we need to do this passionately.”

Brothers check mates Eric and Benjamin Zhang love chess. The Taylors Lakes brothers, aged nine and seven, play each other three times a day, trying to claim bragging rights at home. Outside of the family home, they make formidable opponents – Eric and Benjamin won their respective age groups in the RJ Shield, a tournament held in Hoppers Crossing last month. “I’ve been playing for about two and a half years, but this was my first tournament win,” Eric said. “I won the under-10 division and got a gold medal. I love the game and the tactics – you always have to be thinking ahead.” Benjamin also took home a gold medal in the under-8 division. “I was confident before we started and I was pleased with how I played,” he said. The win came at an opportune time for Benjamin, who took part in the state’s biggest chess tournament at the weekend.

“I’m taking part in the Victorian State Championships, which is a really big tournament,” he said. “I’m a little bit nervous, but also excited about the opportunity.” While Benjamin might be off to the state championships, Eric said he was still the champion at home. “I win most of the time, but sometimes Benjamin beats me,” he said. Eric said he’d love to be able to play more readily in Brimbank. “We have to travel to Caroline Springs and Melton to play in chess clubs,” he said. “We play each other a lot, but if there were more chess clubs in Brimbank, we could play other people more often.” Tate Papworth Benjamin and Eric Zhang were winners at a chess tournament. Good wrap for recycling Colourful, anti-plastic messages have appeared throughout Sunshine. The Friends of Kororoit Creek and the Sunshine Business Association have teamed up to introduce new bin wraps across the suburb. While the designs are new, Jessica Gerger of the Friends of Kororoit Creek said the wraps are 100 per cent recycled. â€œThe Friends of Kororoit Creek received a council grant to do some new bin wraps and we thought â€˜letâ€™s not create more waste, letâ€™s use the old wraps and paint over themâ€™,â€? Ms Gerger said. â€œSo we got children, artists and families from across the community â€Ś to paint their own anti-plastic environmental messages.â€? The bin wraps have gone up on bins around Sunshine, along with the â€˜Straws Suckâ€™ posters.

Ms Gerger said the community feedback to the project had been overwhelmingly positive. â€œAnything people wanted to express about plastic was encouraged and we found that those who did their own research really found it eye-opening,â€? she said. â€œIt wouldâ€™ve been a lot easier to just throw these away and print some new ones, but we didnâ€™t want these just sitting in landfill.â€? Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said the concept perfectly matched the direction the shopping strip is looking to take. â€œThis falls hand-in-hand with our stainability campaign and ties in nicely with our community upkeep,â€? Police have released footage of a man they are searching for following an armed robbery in Deer Park. The man entered the Neale Road shopping centre about 1.20pm on Thursday, June 7. He walked into a post office and produced a firearm, demanding cash. He was given a quantity of money and then left. Help is at hand for volunteers By Tate Papworth People with a disability are under-represented in the volunteer sector and Duke Street Community House wants to know why. A project launched by the organisation will seek to understand more about the issues people with a disability in Brimbank face when wanting to volunteer. Duke Street Community House project officer Jenna Chia said the project, Pathways to Participation, will identify the issues hindering people’s involvement in volunteering.

“We know that many people with a disability want to volunteer, however they experience many obstacles including a lack of flexible and rewarding opportunities, or organisations that are unwilling to adapt to meet their needs,” Ms Chia said. “They also face discrimination and stigma, with people often focusing on their disability rather than the skills and experience they can offer. “Each community is different and we want to identify the issues affecting people and organisations in Brimbank.”

Ms Chia said volunteer work was often a gateway to employment. “Volunteer work improves confidence, communication skills and allows for social networking, which is vital when it comes to prospective employment,” she said. “However, rates of formal volunteering [for the general population] in Brimbank as measured in the 2016 Census, were only 11 per cent compared to the national average of 19 per cent. “People with a disability in Australia face increased barriers to community participation

and volunteering … there is a significant need to understand the unique barriers that people with a disability in Brimbank experience when wanting to volunteer.” Duke Street is recruiting community members with a disability to complete a survey or interview about their experience when volunteering. They also want to speak with volunteer co-ordinators to understand the challenges faced by not-for-profit organisations who run volunteer programs. Warm fuzzy feeling Caroline Chisholm Catholic College students have rallied behind the Vinnies Winter Appeal. The college kicked off its annual Vinnies Winter Appeal last month with a casual dress day and a donation drive. Caroline Chisholm Catholic College director of faith and mission Bernard Green said donations flooded in thick and fast. “This all started with the casual dress and after that we invited students and staff to donate money or warm clothes,” he said. “We collected over $1400 in cash donations as well as about 12 baskets full of warm winter clothing, blankets, and food.” While the donation numbers were high, Mr Green said the education aspect of the appeal was priceless. “This is well supported each year and it’s great to see the enthusiastic buy-in,” Mr Green said. “For us it’s not actually the dollar amount raised, it’s the awareness.

“This is a life-long thing. It shows the children that there’s another side of life and that this is just one opportunity for our children to discover that they can make a difference.” The college plans to continue supporting Vinnies. “In August we’ll be doing our annual school sleep out, which has about 30 children signed up to take part,” Mr Green said. “And in December we’ll also be running our annual Vinnies Christmas Appeal.” All goods and funds raised were given to Vinnie’s Braybrook chapter on the last day of term last week. Activity centre views sought Brimbank council is calling for feedback on its strategy for the municipality’s activity centres. The council’s draft version of the Brimbank Activity Centre Strategy 2018 will be open for feedback until 5pm on Tuesday, July 24. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the revised draft would guide the council’s decisions on Brimbank’s activity centres. “Council is revising the activity centre strategy to reflect council progress made and because there have been many changes in relation to activity centre planning both at the state and local planning level. “The draft Brimbank Activity Centre Strategy 2018 will provide council with direction to facilitate investment and development. “This strategy is also important because it will help us to establish a prioritised work program to improve liveability and develop our activity centres by increasing connectivity, amenity and investment opportunities.” The draft strategy includes actions for strategic planning, economic development, business engagement and capital works. A 37-year-old St Albans man claims that controversial Cooke Island doctor, Milan Brych, has cured him of cancer. Mr Frank Vurusic, a house builder, has just returned from Brych’s clinic in Rarotonga after a six month immunotherapy program and declares that a form of cancer known as rhabdomyosarcoma, which appeared on his left shoulder, has disappeared and all that is needed now is plenty of rest.

Some of the Housing Ministry two-storey concrete flats in Commerce St, Braybrook are literally falling apart. Residents say they fear a complete block of flats will collapse soon, killing or injuring adults and children who live in them.

Brimbank councillor Charles Gatt stood alone to oppose the council’s $68 million budget because he believes a 7 per cent rate hike will hit the disadvantaged. making it the second longest bridge in Victoria. It stands 50 metres high, which Mr Thornton said posed some challenges. “Given the height of the bridge and the manner in which we were widening it, we couldn’t actually work from underneath, which

is why we lowered pieces in from above,” he said. “We had our guys working in cages, looking down, which made for some pretty interesting times. “Space was also a bit of an issue because we

Significant upgrades to a western suburbs icon are almost complete. Construction to widen the Ring Road’s EJ Whitten Bridge hit a major milestone last week, with traffic switched into the inside lanes so final works to safety barriers can be completed. Works on the bridge were slated to be completed by January, 2019, but M80 project delivery manager Andrew Robilliard said the project was running ahead of schedule. “We’ve switched traffic to the inside lanes now, which will allow us to install public safety barriers to the outside of the bridge,” Mr Robilliard said. “We’ve then got to asphalt the road, but we’re beholden to the weather for that because we need the temperature to be at least 15 degrees to do it properly.” Prior to the works, the bridge, which was built in the 1990s, was made up of two separate carriageways with three lanes in each direction. The carriageways have been joined to create a single bridge with five lanes in each direction. Project manager Sam Thornton said while everything had gone according to plan, the job was a significant undertaking. “We used gantry cranes to build new bridge sections,” Mr Thornton said. “We used the cranes to connect the bridge supports, then laid 20 beams along the length of the bridge. “Once the beams were secured, we were able to put the pieces of the bridge deck in place, creating the single bridge. “In total, there were 20 bridge beams, which were up to 54 metres long and weighed up to 85 tonnes.” The gantry cranes were a vital component to

were working behind barriers, sometimes only three metres wide.” In addition to the extra lanes, the upgraded bridge will also include electronic overhead gantries, which display variable speed limits and travel times and can manage lane closures in the case of road incidents. Intelligent transport systems will monitor and manage incidents on the freeway, with wireless vehicle detectors to count and monitor traffic volumes. The bridge will also be better illuminated with new LED lights installed. The bridge works are part of a wider project to upgrade the 3.2-kilometre section of the M80 Ring Road from Sunshine Avenue to the Calder Freeway. Mr Robilliard said the upgrades would improve safety and traffic flow. “The bridge is obviously a major part of the project, but there’s also significant works being done to other parts of the road which is sometimes a little lost,” Mr Robilliard said. “The section of the M80 at Sunshine Avenue will be increased from two lanes to four, which extends to five lanes over the bridge, through to the Calder.” Mr Robilliard said the extra lanes will improve traffic flow and safety. “These upgrades will get rid of the bottlenecks at Sunshine Avenue, Keilor Park Drive and the Calder Freeway,” he said. “With the extra lanes, the need for drivers to merge and weave is reduced, which improves flow and safety. “These improvements should cut travel times by up to 15 minutes in peak periods.” The project, which is a joint initiative of the

Judy Ingram has called Brimbank home for more than 40 years and has served as president of the Friends of Maribyrnong Valley for the past four years. She spoke with Tate Papworth about Brimbank, the environment and safety. Tell us about your connection to Brimbank. I moved here in 1970 with my mum and dad. When I got here we stayed here. This is home. St Albans has always been home. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. What do you love about the area? When I moved in it was just like a big country town. It was the end of the train line. No boys wanted to bring you all the way home to St Albans, but in its way, that’s what made it so great. It was just like a big country town, Everybody knew everybody. What do you think could be done to improve the area?

Tell us about your involvement with Friends of Maribyrnong Valley. I started out volunteering because I lived opposite the 3LO transmission site. When it was sold there was no maintenance done on it and we ended up with a serrated tussock seed head problem. I wanted to learn about the problem, so I did. Then I joined the friends of the valley and started

I’d love to see better street lighting to improve safety for people. I used to walk all the way home from the train station and never felt unsafe. Now I don’t even sit in my own house with the door unlocked. Safety has become an issue, but that’s not just St Albans, that’s everywhere. I think better lighting would help with that.

we’ve received. Grants are hard to receive and we’ve had some real wins. I’m proud that when we do a grant, we’re able to complete projects successfully. Anyone can get money, but we continue to get money each year and that’s because we’re getting results and doing this right. Planting trees in drought isn’t an easy thing to do.

Has it been hard to find a work/life balance? It’s time-consuming because I’m on lots of committees representing the friends group. I don’t mind that though … to be able to physically see the difference some of our programs have made is amazing. I can’t physically plant a tree because of my disability, but I can do my bit through this role.

Melton City Council 2018/19 Budget adopted Melton City Council is getting ready for a big year of upgrades and improvements around the City of Melton. Council last week adopted the 2018/19 Budget which outlines how rates will be spent over the coming year to ensure the City is a fabulous place to live, work and play. Through the Budget, Council has committed to the ongoing delivery of services to the community with a budget of $134 million. In addition to comprehensive community consultation in 2017, Council invited residents to provide feedback once the Draft Budget was released in March. This helped Council get a sense of what the community felt was important. Council’s 2018/19 Budget commits to investinging in new and renewal infrastructure projects totalling $77.82 million. This includes roads ($17.15 million); bridges ($4.71 million); recreational,

leisure and community facilities ($24.72 million); footpaths and cycle ways ($1.15 million); parks, open space and streetscapes ($897,000); public art ($90,000) and other assets ($3.58 million). Some highlights include the female change room upgrade program ($900,000); design and construction City Vista sporting ovals, tennis and netball courts, and pavilion ($2.9 million); completion of Caroline Springs Leisure Centre redevelopment and construction of Sub-regional Tennis Facility ($2.7 million). Another Budget highlight includes an increase to the rates rebate for eligible pensioners to $75. This brings the total reduction to $349.40 when coupled with savings from the State Government rebate.

It’s a pleasure to announce that Council adopted its 2018/19 Budget last week, demonstrating our commitment to delivering on key community priorities now and well into the future. We will continue to deliver services within a budget of $134 million, and will invest in new and renewal infrastructure projects totalling $77.82 million. This includes significant inestment in recreational, leisure and community facilities; roads, bridges, footpaths and cycle ways. Significant capital projects include: female change room upgrade program; design and construction of Weir Views Park and Wetlands, Arnolds Creek Playground, and Allenby Reserve; redevelopment of Bill Cahill Reserve and Hannah Watts Park; design and construction of Kurunjang Neighbourhood House and Melton Central Community Hub; redevelopment of Macpherson Park Regional Facility; and Stage 1 Eynesbury sports ground, playground, pavilion, lighting and car park.

Overall, we feel confident that this is a fair and equitable budget that strives to ensure the timely delivery of infrastructure, programs and services for our community.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who entered Council’s #meltoncitymuchmore photography competition, held on Facebook and Instagram over the past month.

Some great projects that I have advocated for were approved as part of the budget process.

We received over 200 outstanding entries, and it’s a pleasure to congratulate Rebecca Heaton (first prize), for her stunning photograph of the kangaroos at Eynesbury; Nicole Costello (second prize), for her beautiful floral image at the Melton Botanic Gardens; and Adrian Borg (third prize), for his outstanding aerial photo of the rail bridge over Melton Weir. $3 million toward the proposed aquatic and leisure centre in Fraser Rise

$4.78 million for the completion of the long awaited Westwood Drive Road and Bridge project, and

•

$2.9 million for the design and construction of City Vista sporting ovals, tennis and netball courts, and pavilion.

Further funds were also allocated for the completion of Caroline Springs Leisure Centre and Sub-regional tennis facility; design and construction of Fraser Rise and Aintree Children’s and Community Centres; and stages one and two of the Lake Caroline and surrounds lighting project.

This is along with the reinstatement of the water fountain at the Caroline Springs front lake. Of course, these projects will be undertaken alongside all the other outstanding services, projects and programs that Council offers residents, to make our community an even better place to run a business, build a home and raise a family. As stated in my election pledge, I will continue to advocate on behalf of, and represent, the Cambridge Ward residents who placed their trust and faith in me to be their elected official. I pride myself on being the voice of that community; one who works tirelessly to ensure that the services and infrastructure are available to those who need them, and to achieve the best possible outcomes for our municipality. Knights rue lost chance By Lance Jenkinson It was a rollercoaster all night for the Melbourne Knights during a 2-2 draw with Bentleigh Greens in the National Premier League at Knights Stadium on Friday night. Take the result in isolation and you would not be too discontented sharing the points with a Greens side that is 17 points above the Knights on the ladder and a clear-cut title contender. However, Knights captain Marijan Cvitkovic is leaning towards viewing the game as one that slipped through their fingers. Twice the Knights held leads and agonisingly twice they coughed them up. “You don’t get to score a lot of goals or get a lot of opportunities against Bentleigh, so it was disappointing that we couldn’t hold on to the leads,” Cvitkovic said. “We conceded pretty softly twice if I’m honest.” Even when the Melbourne Knights had seen their leads wiped, they had one more chance from the penalty spot to take the win, but Tomislav Uskok thumped his shot into the post. An upset was not meant to be for the Knights on this occasion, but they showed they can match it with any team in the competition. That was evident particularly in the last 20 minutes of the game when the Knights went down to 10 men due to injuries. The Knights had to make a third and final substitution after Andjelo Svalina injured a hamstring, but unfortunately the subtitute who came on, Nicholas Jurcic, injured a hamstring as well and had to return to the bench. It topped off a hellish night of injuries for the Knights after Ben Surey had earlier limped off with a calf issue. While going down to 10 men scuppered any chance the Knights had of winning, it gave coach Aljosa Asanovic and the supporters a chance to see the fighting spirit of their side. “The boys showed great character,” Cvitkovic said. “We were actually playing decent football and you probably couldn’t tell that we had a man less with the way we were playing. “It was a good performance overall, but still disappointing we couldn’t hold on to the leads.” Nate Foster Bowen put Melbourne Knights ahead after 35 minutes, but his goal was cancelled out four minutes later by Matthew Thurtell. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Ben Jolley, a warrior for the Williamstown Football Club for many years, last weekend broke Troy West’s games record for the club. Jolley led his side to a 30-point win over Collingwood in front of the Seagull faithful. Jolley has done it all in the blue and gold, winning the Gerry Callahan Medal for club best and fairest four times and the Ron James Memorial Trophy nine times and leading the club to premiership glory in 2015. He is an inspirational leader, like many before him at Point Gellibrand, and his name deservingly ranks with the likes of Troy West, Terry Wheeler, Saade Ghazi, Ian Rickman and Barry Round, to name but a few. No doubt he will join them in the Williamstown Hall of Fame in the future. ■ Scott Mizzi this weekend will play his 450th WRFL game – an amazing feat. Starting at Altona as a seven year old in the under-9s, Scott has enjoyed a lot of football at several clubs – Sunshine Heights, Deer Park and, currently, with Laverton Magpies. His mother Janine was on the WRFL board for a number of years and the family is entrenched in footy in the west. It is a great milestone, one I hope he can savour. ■ Former Bulldogs and Werribee star Simon Atkins’ success as a coach continues with his charges at St Bernard’s taking out the Associated Catholic Colleges championship against Whitefriars last week by a point. “Axe” loves his involvement with the school, so this back-to-back triumph rates pretty highly. The school has had a very impressive AFL graduation list over the years, including Justin and Simon Madden, Matthew Lloyd, Mitch Wallis, Tom Liberatore, Jude Bolton, Joe Daniher, Dane Swan and emerging Swans star Ben Ronke. Xavier O’Halloran, current Western Jets captain, is set to join that list next year. ■ Sadly I note the passing of former Bulldogs player and Williamstown premiership player Mark Cross. The Bulldogs past players paid tribute to Mark last weekend with a presentation to his widow, Jill, and sons Joel, Shaun and Kane. Mark had a Midas touch with premierships, starting with the 1976 flag with the Seagulls, then being involved as either player or coach with four Red Cliffs victories in the Sunraysia league and then a three-peat with Mildura Imps. He also got Melbourne to two grand finals in the early ’90s as reserves coach.

With a bit of luck, the Lakers could have added another two or three wins to their tally

after suffering some narrow losses, but at least they are growing more competitive at the level by the week. Suburbs on a mission to save the season Western Suburbs want to salvage their season under new coach Joe Sweeney. Suburbs took a step in the right direction with a 3-1 win over Hoppers Crossing on the road at Grange Reserve in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 on Saturday. Sweeney is the third coach to take charge of Suburbs after only 13 rounds. It was Suburbs’ first win since Sweeney stepped into the role two weeks ago. Sweeney has decided to strip it all back and start implementing a new strategy. “As far as the players are concerned, there’s quality at the club, but it’s been dysfunctional,” he said. “You’ve had different coaches coming in with different mentalities, so it’s exceptionally hard and there’s going to be a wee bit of heartache for the players. “All I’m doing right now is putting it in a better shape and trying to get them to work to a system. “We’ve wiped the slate and we’ve started again.” One non-negotiable for Sweeney is work ethic. From the time he arrived at Western Suburbs, he believes the players have universally put in 100 per cent effort. “That’s the key factor to this win,” he said. “They’ve taken on board everything from the first time of meeting them.” Western Suburbs went a goal down after just five minutes when Darryl Roach scored for Hoppers Crossing. Suburbs did not drop their heads, hitting back with goals through Craig Sweeney, Fernando Morales and Michael Caccavo. “There was no individuals there today – it was 100 per cent a squad effort,” Sweeney said. It was a huge victory for Western Suburbs. It snapped a five-game losing streak and saw them move out of the relegation zone. “We need points to stay in the league, so it was good to get the win,” Sweeney said. With victories few and far between, Sweeney allowed his players a chance to celebrate the victory. Once Tuesday night training arrives, it will be all eyes on their next crucial battle with Banyule City at Ralph Reserve on Sunday. “Next week’s game starts on Tuesday at training and we’ll take it from there,” Sweeney said Elsewhere in state league 1, North Sunshine Eagles had a 1-0 win over FC Clifton Hill. Keilor Park picked up a point away to Essendon Royals after a 1-1 draw, while Sydenham Park was disappointing in a 4-0 loss to Banyule City. Slow start but Blues fly home Keilor overcame a sluggish start to run away with a 41-point win over Pascoe Vale in the Essendon District Football League premier division at Keilor Reserve on Saturday. The Blues failed to register a goal in the first quarter, but made up for it with a five-goal second term to assume control of the match and go on to record a convincing victory. Nick O’Kearney produced his first best-on-ground performance since returning to Keilor. A home grown player who spent time with St Kilda in the AFL, O’Kearney is regularly among the best players for the Blues and is a consistent performer. Dean Galea led the way in attack for Keilor with five goals. Galea is one of the top spearheads in the competition with 46 goals, one goal back from Pascoe Vale’s Matthew Watson, who leads the competition. Watson was restricted to one goal by Keilor. Keilor has moved into second position on the ladder on percentage from Greenvale, who fell one spot following a heavy defeat to Strathmore. Keilor has a chance to consolidate its spot in the top two when it travels to play winless Essendon Doutta Stars on Saturday at Nipper Jordan Oval. In division 1, Taylors Lakes came ‘oh so close’ to claiming a shock victory over ladder leader Airport West at Lionheart Reserve on Saturday. The two sides played out a draw, but the Lions had their chances, accumulating 17 scoring shots to 12 on the day. In the end, both teams walked away with a share of the points. Andrew Gallina, Samuel Kennedy and Daniel Walachowski were the stand-outs on the day for the Lions. Taylors Lakes will face Hillside Sharks in the next round at Lionheart Reserve on Saturday. The Sharks will take winning form into the game, having thrashed Oak Park by 44 points at Hillside Reserve. In division 2, Burnside Heights came from 40 points down at half time for a miraculous three-point win over Roxburgh Park. In the English Premier League, I support Manchester United and I’ve watched every World Cup since 1994. I believe it’s the best sporting event in the world. Which team do you think will win this year? I think the best four squads with a chance are Brazil, Germany, France and Spain. My hunch is that Spain will win because, after winning in 2010 and the Euro in 2012, they had a poor run in 2014. Now they’re hungry and back with strength. Croatia to face World Cup host By Mark Gleeson Croatia has edged Denmark in penalty kicks to set up a quarter-final meeting with host nation Russia at the World Cup. Croatia came back after conceding in the opening minute to earn a World Cup quarter-final berth after edging Denmark 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the two sides drew 1-1 in the round of 16 match. They could have wrapped up the result five minutes from the end of extra time, but Luka Modric had his penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel. The Croatia captain returned to bravely take one of the post-match kicks as goalkeeper Danijel Subasic saved three of Denmark’s efforts to set up a quarter-final meeting with Russia on Saturday. It was Modric’s sublime pass that put Ante Rebic through on goal before being brought down by Mathias Jorgensen, offering Croatia a chance to win just before the lottery of the shoot-out. But Schmeichel made a smart save to keep the 1-1 stalemate intact. Two chaotic goals in the opening four minutes made for a rollicking start at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. That proved a false dawn as the spectacle faded, with both sides choosing caution as their priority in chasing a rare chance to reach the last eight at a World Cup. Jorgensen took all of 57 seconds to breach the

Croatia defence at the end of a long throw-in by Jonas Knudsen, stabbing at the ball with his left foot as he took it off teammate Thomas Delaney. Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic got a hand to Jorgensen’s toe-poke, but deflected the ball across his own line. There was an element of comedy to the fourth-minute equaliser for Mario Mandzukic as Denmark’s early advantage quickly disappeared. A kick across the Danish defence was firmly hit away by Henrik Dalsgaard but straight into the face of teammate Andreas Christensen, creating a pinball effect that saw the ball fall for Mandzukic, who then expertly turned it into the net from close range. The anticipated influence of Christian Eriksen for the Danes and Croatia’s Modric held out hopes of more mouthwatering action, but their craft was only evident in patches. Eriksen did shave the top of the woodwork just before half-time with a speculative effort while, at the other end, Ivan Rakitic forced a smart save from Schmeichel. After the interval, the chances were even more sparse, although Croatia did up the tempo towards the end of regulation time, only to run into a resolute Denmark defence. In extra time, Knudsen’s long throws proved the most dangerous attacking weapon, but eventually it was penalties that delivered a winner. – AAP
