New life for town centre By Tate Papworth The St Albans town centre will be reinvigorated under a proposed partnership between the Brimbank council and key stakeholders. The proposed group will work with the council to establish a vision for the St Albans town centre and advocate for investment and development. It will also hold discussions between key groups on a range of matters affecting the centre and provide feedback on proposed plans, strategies and projects that impact the area. Cr Bruce Lancashire said similar proposals had a proven track record of success in Brimbank.

Hoops hopes on the rise If determination and work ethic have anything to do with it, Alieu Chol will be taking his basketball talent to the world. The 19-year-old has aspirations to study abroad and dreams of playing college basketball in the US, but says fees of $28,000 could be his biggest obstacle. Standing at 198 centimetres, Chol’s skills on court have caught the attention of Pennsylvania State University, McDaniel College in Maryland and a number of other institutions. “I’ve been playing basketball since 2012,” Chol said. “I started playing soccer when I was six to the age of 14, but I changed codes because of my height. “As a kid I would watch basketball and I always loved it. I look up to my brother Yuat, who is playing college basketball for Texas Christian University in America right now.” Chol knows that chasing dreams takes hard work and dedication, so he worked three jobs last year to save and help support his family. “Last year I worked at McDonalds, KFC and Tabcorp Park but it interfered with my studies, so I now work at Caltex and save money,” he said. “My mum is a single mum and doesn’t speak much English … she raises my younger siblings. I’m working my butt off now.” Chol has played for the Sunshine Longhorns and Western Pride in Footscray and has been selected for the Melton under-21 representative team. “I’m trying to do well there so that I get seen,” Chol said. “We’ve seen the result of this sort of investment in Sunshine and to now set up a similar arrangement in St Albans is certainly a wise move for what is the centre of our municipality,” he said. “St Albans is the centre of culture and it’s unique. “Work has already been done to improve the centre – the railway station has opened up, the shopping centre has a new look … this proposal is a very exciting opportunity for council to do for St Albans what we’ve done for Sunshine.” The group will include two councillors, the chief executive officer, one senior Victoria Police officer, a senior representative from Victoria University, a representative of the St Albans Business Association and four major business operators and commercial property owners in the town centre. It will also include two community/ service representatives from within or near the town centre and an independent chair. Cr Virginia Tachos will represent the council on the group and anticipates it will make a big impact. “St Albans is undergoing big changes, or I should say a renaissance of arts, culture and culinary excellence,” she said. “It is an exciting proposition that this group, which is committed and looking to harness this reinvigoration, will provide strategic direction, dialogue, feedback and opinion on … issues impacting the town.”

Doors to close on Keilor bank By Tate Papworth The Commonwealth Bank will close its Keilor branch this Friday, despite an outpouring of community opposition. Keilor Traders Association president Neville Young said the community had made its voice heard but the closure will go ahead. “People have voiced their opinion to the tellers. There’s a real sense that you can’t just up and move after 45 years,” Mr Young said. “We’ve circulated a petition which has close

to 600 signatures on it. We’re waiting to get a few more back, but we’re estimating by the time we put it all together, we’ll have 2500 on it, which is pretty good for a little village.” Despite the show of support, a letter to the Traders Association from Commonwealth Bank general manager retail sales and service Mark Jones said the closure would go ahead. “A decision to close a branch is never taken lightly,” the letter stated. “While we are very mindful of the issues you have raised with us, we have seen a marked

decline in the number of transactions at the Keilor branch over the past five years. “As such, we are unable to reverse our decision and its final day of operation will be 6 April.” From Monday, April 9 the Keilor branch will

become part of the Keilor Downs Shopping Centre branch. Customers will be directed to Keilor Downs, but an ATM will remain in Keilor Village. Mr Young said the village needs a bank. “A lot of businesses within the village do their banking at this branch. We need a bank in the village. “However, the Commonwealth Bank actually owns this building, so finding another bank to come in is probably going to prove quite difficult.”

A celebration of love and family From school days together to raising a family, and enjoying their retirement, Deer Park couple Alex and Dulcie O’Brien have been inseparable most of their lives, and last week celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Alex, 94, and Dulcie, 90, were married on March 27, 1948. They raised three children in the Deer Park home they still live in, and have watched their family grow to include four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The pair said that growing up across the street from each other and attending the same school meant their early courtship just happened.

“We were always friends, the families knew each other and we lived so close that it all just went from there,” Dulcie said. “We’ve been in this house pretty much since we were married, all three kids were born in this house not the hospital, and we’ve watched Deer Park change over a long time. “We’ve been very lucky to have such a lovely family, everyone gets along and they’ve never given us a bit of trouble.” Alex and Dulcie said it was their supportive family, and not letting arguments fester, that were the secret to their remarkable longevity.

“You make your vows for life, and for better or for worse you stick through things,” Alex said. “We have our little disagreements quite often, but you forget about it in five minutes and it’s all over. “All our kids make the effort to travel to come and see us regularly to catch up and help out around the house, which is wonderful. “Family-wise we’re the luckiest guys in the world, we’ve looked after them and they’ve responded. That’s why we’ve had a good life.”

Police will be able to test more motorists more often as a fleet of 10 new alcohol and drug testing buses are set to hit the streets. The first of the new vehicles is already operational. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said the state-of-the-art design improves the police’s ability to tests motorists anywhere, anytime. “The new buses have been designed with enhanced safety measures to keep our members safe and include LED flood lighting technology, one-step entry with an internal flat floor, front and rear storage areas for equipment and state-of-the-art electronic control systems,” he said. Assistant Commissioner Fryer said the impact impaired drivers had on the road toll in 2017 was significant. “Sadly last year of the 166 drivers or riders who lost their lives on the road, 56 were either over the alcohol limit, had drugs in their system or both. “Twenty one were over the limit, 27 were found to have drugs in their system and a further eight drivers/ riders were both over the limit and impaired by drugs. “To think 34 per cent of people who lost their lives on the road, and who were in charge of their vehicles, actually chose to get behind the wheel impaired is shocking.” The new buses will be rolled out throughout 2018 and into early next year until the old fleet is replaced. Ten arrested for graffiti crimes By Alesha Capone

Police have arrested 10 people after executing warrants at properties across the west last week, as part of an operation targeting graffiti vandals. More than 700 charges were laid against the alleged offenders, including a 22-year-old Truganina man who was charged with 295 counts of graffiti-related offences such as conduct endangering life, criminal damage, burglary, possess with the intent to damage and trespass. A 21-year-old Yarraville man was charged with 121 counts of graffiti-related offences including conduct endangering life, criminal damage, burglary, possess with the intent to damage and trespass. Another five people – a 23-year-old Truganina man, a 20-year-old Altona man, a 20-year-old South Kingsville man, a 30-year-old Seaford man and a 31-year-old West Footscray man – were charged with more than 300 counts of graffiti-related offences collectively. All of those charged were bailed to appear in court at a later date. Police said a 30-year-old Tarneit man, a 20-year-old Altona Meadows man and a 46-year-old South Kingsville woman would also be charged on summons. A number of items were seized from the properties searched including two cars, cannabis plants, quantities of ecstasy and ice, cash, laptops, phones and hard drives. Acting Superintendent Andrew Gustke said the results showed Victoria Police’s dedication to holding graffiti vandals to account. “We’ve seen horrific injuries and even deaths as a result of the risky behaviour people engage it to commit these offences so we take it extremely seriously,” he said.

Pupils at Cairnlea Park Primary School are preparing to make a special delivery. Staff and pupils at the school have put together a bundle of care packages which will be sent off to defence force members in time for Anzac Day. Cairnlea Park Primary School community engagement and transition co-ordinator Natalie Roach said the concept was about helping the children do something positive. “One of our teachers is in touch with the defence force and told us about the idea,” she said. “We thought what better way to get the kids engaged in the community that exists outside of our small community.” Mrs Roach said the response from staff and pupils was tremendous. “We’ve ended up with 38 boxes which will get shipped off to serving members.” The school places a large emphasis on recognising Anzac Day and Mrs Roach said the care packages were a reminder that there are still people serving today. “We do a really big Anzac Day assembly each year and we really try to instill into the kids that Anzac Day isn’t a celebration, it’s a commemorative day,” she said. “The packages are a nice way to add to that commemorative process and to show the kids that Anzac Day will be around forever.” EVELYN (FRONT), JAXON, RICARDO AND KYAN

Ms Holland founded the charity organisation Urban Lifesavers, which aims to empower ordinary people to become lifesavers. “Urban Lifesavers was established in memory of my husband who didn’t survive a cardiac arrest,” Ms Holland said.

“We’re focused on raising awareness about cardiac arrest, providing defibrillators into the retail shopping areas where large numbers of people gather and in lobbying for legislative change to make them more inclusive in workplaces.” However Ms Holland said providing the equipment is only part of the job. “We’re big on providing education sessions,” she said. “We teach people the why, when and how to use a defibrillator and why time matters. “The survival rate for people suffering cardiac arrest goes from less than five per cent to over 80 per cent if they’re defibrillated within the first five minutes.” Although the company is still small, Ms Holland said it’s quickly growing in stature. “We put five AEDs into Boroondara last year, we’ve put a couple in Bayside and now we’re starting to put them into Brimbank and Moonee Valley.” Terry White Chemmart in Keilor Village was last month fitted with an AED which will be

available for public use, courtesy of the charity. Terry White Chemmart owner Dino Sapuppo said it’s a welcome addition to the store. “I’m thrilled with this donation – we were actually going to buy one for the store anyway, so to have one donated is just fantastic,” Mr Sapuppo said.

While the machinery is for public use, Mr Sapuppo said staff at the chemist will be on hand to help should an emergency arise. “About five staff members here have been trained in how to use the machinery, which will help if a situation occurs. “Here’s hoping we never have to use it.”

Council chips in on pet care A new responsible pet ownership campaign by Brimbank council is urging animal lovers to get their pets microchipped and registered. The campaign – Microchip. Desex. Register – is aimed at educating the community about the need to get their pets desexed and follows the council’s adoption last year of its Animal Management Plan 2017-2021. Mayor Margaret Giudice said Brimbank residents had a strong love for their pets, but needed to ensure they had appropriate care. “It’s important we educate the community about the responsibilities and expectations of pet owners in Brimbank, particularly in relation to desexing and pet registration,” Cr Giudice said. “While there are more than 10,000 dogs and 3000 cats currently registered in Brimbank, we know there are still many out there in the community that are not desexed and remain unregistered. “Last year we received more than 5000 calls from the community with complaints about dogs and cats [and] we also collected about 960 dogs and more than 1800 cats.” Brimbank is one of six Victorian municipalities where it is compulsory for all dogs and cats to be desexed prior to registration, unless exempt. This requirement is aimed at reducing overpopulation and high euthanasia rates for dogs and cats. Ewen McRae

Witnesses are being sought following a sexual assault in Keilor East in February. Fawkner Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Team detectives said the incident happened at the Overland Reserve on Parkside Avenue on February 21 between 5-6pm after the victim, a 19-year-old Keilor East woman accepted a lift from a man in a white van. The victim told investigators that she saw a man on a motorcycle in the vicinity of the van when the attack occurred. Investigators are keen to speak to the motorcyclist. A St Albans pharmacy got a splash of purple last week to raise money and awareness for a cause close to their hearts. Pharmacy 4 Less held a morning tea on March 26 in support of the Epilepsy Foundation, with staff and customers donating throughout the day. Retail manager Aleks Zycinski said the store, which has been open for six months, wanted to support a cause with connections to the community. “We’ve got quite a few epileptic patients here at the pharmacy, and we also know a few who have passed away,” Ms Zycinski said. “So the main reason was to raise awareness … compared to some other conditions, there’s not that knowledge of it and how it works.”

While the final amount raised wasn’t known as donations were still coming in, Ms Zycinski said the response from the community was very positive and the staff would look to run the event again. “We have the bus stop out the front, and every time the bus stopped there was a new crowd of people coming in and donating,” she said. “Other stores nearby came and donated, so the community support was fantastic. “This is the first fundraising event we’ve done … we’ll definitely keep supporting Purple Day every year – as well as other causes, like diabetes, which have a real impact in this area.” Ewen McRae

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man following the discovery of a woman’s body in Cairnlea on March 27. The 59-year-old woman’s body was discovered at a residence on Sunnybrae Circuit about 7.20pm. The circumstances surrounding her death are yet to be established. A 59-year-old Cairnlea man has been charged with murder. Both parties are believed to have been known to each other. The man appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on March 28, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. By Tate Papworth Two Ambulance Victoria graduate paramedics have walked starkly different paths on their journey to calling the western suburbs home. It was while working in Timor-Leste that Matt Wilkinson found his calling. “I was working with AusAID International over in Timor-Leste for a few years and over there I met a lot of paramedics and nurses,” he said.

“I got to know their stories and was inspired to come back to Australia and study paramedicine, which has led me to here.” Mr Wilkinson said his experience overseas had helped him adapt to life as a paramedic in the west. “The biggest thing in the west is the diversity,” he said. “Basically, every patient is a different nationality and has a different story, which is one of the most interesting things for me. “It can be a challenge, finding out the best ways to interact and make a job work, but I think my experience overseas has helped with that. “While it’s early stages of my career, it’s good to be in this area to start things off.” His colleague, Darcy Gleeson, took a different road to the west. “I was working in finance and decided I wanted a bit of a career change,” he said. “A friend of mine was studying paramedicine and mentioned he’d helped a crew get someone

from clinically dead to alive on the side of a highway. “I thought that sounded amazing, applied for the course and here we are.” Mr Gleeson said he was relishing the opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds.

A new council plan to improve the lives of Brimbank’s oldest residents has been put into action. The Age Friendly City Plan 2018-2022, adopted at the recent council meeting, is designed to create more opportunities for Brimbank’s elderly to stay active. Mayor Margaret Giudice said the plan outlined a clear vision for council’s role in supporting their aged residents. “This plan provides us with a view of the social, physical, cultural and economic environment experienced by older people living in our community,” she said. “Throughout the process of developing the plan, it became clear that older people in the community, and the broader community in general, had a mighty lot to say about shaping an age-friendly Brimbank. More than 730 people and service providers contributed their ideas to help shape this plan. “I think this response speaks volumes about what’s on the minds of our community … now it’s time to put the plan to work,” The key areas for action from the plan council will focus on include outdoor spaces and public buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, community support and health services.

The opening of a new swim school in Keilor Park has made a big splash. Jump Swim Schools, specialising in swimming lessons for infants from as young as three months old, opened its doors for tours last week and already has more than 100 students booked in for lessons. The new school, at Harrick Road, caters for young children, with small class sizes and warm water used to enhance the learning experience. Police want your bikes By Esther Lauaki Caroline Springs police are calling on residents to donate old bikes for its Fix the Cycle program. People serving community-based orders involved in the program breathe new life back into old bikes which are then donated to underprivileged families. Officer in charge Sergeant Robin Dampier said the drive started as a co-operation between the department of justice and Victoria Police to reuse bikes that had been handed in to them and not claimed. “This is a program that’s been running for several years across Sunshine, Keilor Downs, Caroline Springs and Melton police divisions,” Sergeant Dampier said. “We also accept bikes from Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury and a number of other service areas.” He said the initiative benefited all involved. “People who are doing community-based orders refurbish the bikes on the weekends by restoring them, painting them and fixing them up and then we donate them to sections of the community with underprivileged families. “Those restoring the bikes are usually people who have got some mechanical expertise and they love it. “It ends up being a win-win situation because the bikes get a second life, rather than mouldering away in the garage and being thrown out. It also gives the offenders in the justice system something productive to do.” Sergeant Dampier would like more donations saying “the more bikes the merrier”. “We’d like bikes in a whole range of sizes … most often we receive little ones that children have grown out of but we accept all sorts of bikes,” he said. Colourful brew for Brimbank Brimbank’s cultural diversity has been celebrated with performances and a pop-up cafe lighting up St Albans. St Albans town centre came alive from March 23 to 25 as part of Cultural Diversity Week, with more than 1000 visitors enjoying performances and food from across the 160 nationalities represented in Brimbank. Mayor Margaret Giudice said it was a chance to showcase the diversity that makes Brimbank great. “The food and entertainment was a beautiful reflection of the kind of people that make up the place we call home,” she said. The pop-up cafe was a particular hit, with treats from local traders representing the area’s cultural communities. The celebration was also part of a new council-led campaign, Welcome We Are Brimbank, which has been developed to showcase Brimbank’s diverse communities to the rest of Melbourne. Reunion of great minds By Tate Papworth A major coincidence has sparked a reunion of old friends and academic minds. St Albans North Primary School principal Robert Parker said the series of events which led to the reunion of former staff members left him speechless. “I had a group of [grade] 1/2 children in my office having a talk and one of the girls asked who the principals had been here. “So I took them out into the foyer and showed them the names on the honour board and they picked up that there has only been one female principal – Ruth Tozer.

“We spoke about her role at the school during her time here from 1974 to 1978 and about two hours later Ruth rang up out of the blue and wanted to show a former colleague visiting from America the school.” Mr Parker promptly agreed and from there things began to snowball. “Ruth and her former colleague Claudia contacted a few other colleagues and it morphed into a morning tea, tour and a bit of a reunion,” he said. Although more than four decades have gone by, Ms Tozer said much of the school is how she remembered it. “It’s quite nostalgic to be back here and seeing it all,” she said. “There’s been quite a few changes, but the basic thing is the same – the corridor, the classrooms, the staff rooms. It certainly brings the memories flooding back.”

Ms Tozer was a trail blazer for women in the education department and said she hoped to see more females on the board. “I’m surprised there aren’t any other female principals on the honour board. “In the ’70s it was quite rare to have a female as principal, I was probably one of the first group, but now it’s just part of the process

of advancing a career within the education department.” Ms Tozer said the most rewarding part of her career was the memories forged. “We’ve had an interesting time recalling some of the fun things that used to happen in the past. “You always remember the good things.”

Party, school bus fleet taken off the road A Sunshine North bus company has had its entire fleet taken off the road following a raid by police and VicRoads last week. The Dee Decker bus company, one of Melbourne’s original “party bus” companies, is alleged to have swapped number plates on its buses to keep defective vehicles on the roads after it was handed 11 defective vehicle notices in February. VicRoads transport safety services manager Russell Greenland said officials had discovered oil and fuel leaks, steering defects and faulty brakes on a number of party buses, while school buses were found to have sharp pieces of metal where seat belts should have been. “Certainly there was potential for those buses to have crashes and potentially catch fire,” Mr Greenland said. He said finding such defects on buses used by small children was “really disappointing”. A raid on March 22 found all 27 vehicles in the fleet were defective in some way, with police alleging the company tried to dodge the repair costs for the 11 vehicles found to be defective in February by swapping number plates. The buses were each generating about $2000 a day for the business. The company faces a fine and possible criminal charges. Ewen McRae

Council focus on state of lake By Esther Lauaki Fountain maintenance, plant management and litter collection are high on the list of priorities as Melton council takes measures to improve the condition of Lake Caroline. The review comes after a group of residents raised concerns about the state of the suburb’s centrepiece and formed a committee in an effort to have it returned to its former glory. The group said the main problems included

overgrown weeds, pest control, the fountain which had been turned off for maintenance and stagnant water which produced an odour. Cambridge ward councillor Steve Abboushi last week updated residents on the council’s efforts to address the issues. “Generally the lake conditions and water quality are excellent,” Cr Abboushi posted on Facebook. “Council undertakes comprehensive water quality testing quarterly.

Step it up for festival Dancer Hannah Bradsworth has invited everyone to join her for the Big Dance Festival, to be held next month. Big Dance will be held across the nation on International Dance Day, April 29, when thousands of people around the world will join together to dance in iconic locations, including Federation Square in Melbourne. In the lead-up to the event, Ausdance Victoria – with the support of western suburbs councils – will be hosting a series of free workshops to help people learn the steps to the dance. The five-minute contemporary indigenous routine has been choreographed to suit people with a variety of capabilities and circumstances, including those who would like to perform standing or seated. Ms Bradsworth, 29, said anyone could join in the Big Dance Festival. A member of the Wild@Heart hip hop dance crew Inkrewsive, Ms Bradsworth will be helping out during some of the dance sessions. She has been dancing since the age of five,

MY BRIMBANK Paul Eleftheriou was born and raised in Deer Park. A passionate man of the west, he’s overcome social stigma and risen through the ranks to become chief medical officer at Western Health. He spoke with Tate Papworth. My paternal grandparents moved to Sunshine in the 1950s from Cyprus. My dad grew up in Sunshine and then moved to Deer Park. That’s where I grew up and spent the first 30 years of my life. I was actually even born at the Footscray Hospital, which is something I wear as a bit of a badge of honour. I went to Deer Park Primary school and Overnewton Anglican College in Keilor, so I was educated out here and my mother still lives in Deer Park. What do you think needs improving? I’m still as passionate about this area as I was when I was 15-16 years old and starting to form opinions on the world. It’s an area that’s been neglected for too long. The people here have so much to offer, but they’re neglected because of social economics and a number of other reasons. We need to really fight for the west and Western Health because we want to improve the lives of people living in the western suburbs. What would you say is the biggest health issue facing the west? Chronic disease is a huge burden on every part of the Australian community, but in the western suburbs it’s exacerbated. We’ve got one of the highest rates of diabetes in the country and one of the highest rates of kidney disease in the country. Why are those rates higher out here? The demographic out here has less wealth and

less people who have gone to school. What that means is people can’t get the same level of education, health literacy or the same health messages as other parts of the country. You have to wonder why there are more pokies in the west, why there are more fast food outlets in the west. There’s a responsibility on the individual to make better decisions, but there’s also a responsibility on government at all levels. So how does the boy from Deer Park become the chief medical officer at Western Health? I’ve always had a passion for helping those that need it the most. That passion helped me overcome any disadvantages I had. But I also have a lot of patience. I wasn’t concerned about getting to a position of authority, I just wanted to get to a position where I could really make a difference and I think in this position I can make a really, really big difference. Chief medical officer is a powerful position. What legacy do you want to leave on the west? My job as a leader is to create and maintain culture. For me the biggest part of my role is making sure we have an environment that people feel safe to speak out and are happy to be here. I want to make this such a positive culture for staff, respect them and provide them with all the support they need. So you’ve just started this new role and I hear things are about to get a whole lot busier. They are! My wife, Elleny and I are expecting our first child, a baby girl, in late April.

State Government Opposition members will be asked to block any moves by the Hamer Government to allow the establishment of an offensive trade on land in Doherty’s Road, Derrimut. The red hot issue will be raised at a meeting of the Labor Caucus this week by local parliamentarian, Mr Bon Thomas.

Local nursing homes face a crisis over patient care because the federal government will not let them hire enough nurses to look after their elderly residents. Many residents are unable to shower or bathe themselves and need help with feeding. Some are totally dependent on nurses for all care and movement. In some homes nurses are unable to shower patients every day because of the workload.

Residents of Andrea Street, St Albans, say a nearby syringe exchange program has turned their street into a haven for drug users. Discarded, used syringes scattered the nature strips, gutters and roads and residents said the situation had jeopardised their health and safety. The Brimbank Community Health Service’s ISIS Primary Care Centre operates the needle exchange program at its Andrea Street premises.

The number of western suburbs patients having lapband surgery has increased from 25 to 30 five years ago to 200 in the past financial year. Obese patients in the western suburbs requiring the surgery usually have the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding inserted at either Williamstown Hospital or Western Hospital in Footscray.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir uncovers an Italian masterpiece The Harley & Rose dining room has a cosy, almost clubbish, vibe about it. The place appears to have already earned places in the hearts of many, including West Footscray’s young family demographic. And, yes, there is a kids menu. The Team CTS of four on hand can rise to the occasion of three-hour-plus meals. But mostly we’re very much of the “bring us food and make it snappy” school. So we really appreciate the terrific service and the beautifully paced arrival of our various choices. It could be said that Harley & Rose serves mostly orthodox Italian – but that would be misleading. For instead of bolognese or veal scaloppine or minestrone, there are wonderful surprises at almost every turn. We share four starters. Salami ($12), with caper berries on the side, has just the right perfume level of fennel. Our other choices mostly display exactly the same levels of light and right. They include Noix de Jambon with fresh fig ($15) and smoked ocean trout, Grand Marnier and horseradish ($16). Though the crunchy/gooey gorgonzola dolce croquettes with quince ketchup ($9) certainly up the richness factor quite a bit. For mains, for us, two pasta offerings and two pizzas. Spaghetti cacio e pepe ($19) is profoundly simple, sinfully rich perfection – just pasta,

From the short specials line-up, Bennie chooses rigatoni with a sticky tomato sauce including fermented chilli and pancetta ($18). Loves it, he does, though its consumption concludes with a familiar refrain from him: “Wow – that was bigger than it looked!” If anything, perhaps our super dooper pizzas are the real high points of our eating evening. Neapolitan ($20) with sweet pepper, tomato, anchovy, olives and oregano and and house sausage ($22) with pork sausage, fennel, tomato, eggplant and pecorino both exhibit great flavours. Desserts? Oh, yes, we’re definitely in that sort of mood. Tiramisu ($14) is a straight-up top-shelf rendition of a classic. Meringue with pink pepper melon and apple granita ($12) is amazing. The blending of the poached meringue (a bit like a gooey marshmallow) with the cool pink cubes, crunchy granita and the all-important mint equals a taste explosion.

SPORT Lack of players forces Keilor Park out the league on a weekly basis far into the future. “The club has exhausted every possible avenue; but have simply been unable to retain and attract enough players.” Injuries, retirement and career commitments were the main reason for players dropping out and the club has been unable to attract recruits. The statement said the club was no longer able to accept the uncertainty of living week to week and wanted to reset and review every aspect of the club to regain the trust and respect of the football community and look to again field open age men’s sides in 2019. The statement also thanked senior coach Marcus Barclay for his passion for the club and efforts in trying to field a competitive team. While the club won’t have an open age men’s teams, the news isn’t all bad news for the Devils. For the first time in years the club’s balance

sheet, Auskick Centre and junior program are running strong. They will also field a women’s side this year. A bye will replace Keilor Park in the fixture. EDFL chief executive Craig Armstead thanked the club for its handling of the situation and its transparency in dealing with the league throughout the process. “On a positive note, Keilor Park will still be represented at senior level in our new EDFL women’s competition, which is very encouraging,” he said in a statement on the EDFL website. “We’re also very encouraged by the fact that Keilor Park will field a full complement of junior boys teams and continue to develop a strong Auskick program.” Tara Murray

Solid signs for Lakers By Lance Jenkinson Caroline Springs is shaping as the likely big improver of the Western Region Football League division 1 this season. The Lakers enter their second season in the top flight a little wiser about what to expect from their competitors and the areas they need to address internally. The exciting youth line-up on their list is a year further developed and an influx of experienced new players has levelled out the imbalances. The needle is definitely pointing up for the Lakers, who have former AFL player Brodie Holland at the helm. Lakers football director Marc Raak said the players now know what to expect. “The boys have had a taste of divvy one now,” he said. “It was a good eye-opener for our club and our players.” Holland’s signing as senior coach is an exciting development for Caroline Springs. A one-time player-coach at Maribyrnong Park, Holland wanted to return to coaching after three years out. The 38-year-old former Fremantle and Collingwood midfielder had not been lost to local football, playing at Broadford in the RDFL, but he felt the time was right to return to the coaches’ box. “We put our cards on the table – this is the list, this is where I think we are at and what we think we need moving forward to climb up the ladder in divvy one,” Raak said. “After about four to six weeks, we had a few meetings and he rang me up and said, ‘I’m going to do it’ … we were over the moon. “From day one when he walked in, he’s known what he wants, the club’s supported him in his decisions, he’s recruited some players, helping with some of our sponsors. “As a club, we’re delighted with the direction we’re heading with Brodie.” Holland has also been training with the team and will pull on the boots. He is likely to play up to six games, which will give him a chance to better understand his players. “When you’re playing next to them, you can see what’s going on, so it will be an educational thing as well to be out there,” Raak said. Another bonus for Caroline Springs will be seeing more of Brian Lake this season. Lake, a three-time premiership star with Hawthorn, played only two games last season because of media commitments. He has informed the club that he will play at least 10 games this year. “I think we’re a four or five-goal better side when Brian’s playing,” Raak said. “Hopefully, he’s all fit and healthy – it’s going to help us because he can play multiple roles.” 68 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 3, 2018

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Former world boxing champion Barry Michael left Williamstown to do the Kokoda trek a few weeks back, but unfortunately it did not turn out well. After six days of pretty intense trekking, torrential rain made the track more hazardous than normal. Barry fell and re-injured his ribs, but soldiered on until he could take no more. He was in a bad way and had to be choppered to the nearest hospital. He cried, not from the physical pain of his broken ribs and bruises, but from the emotional toll of seeing what our brave soldiers went through. Barry’s father, Len, 94, was a British fighter pilot in WWII. Barry is back home and recovering and will be ready for his next big fight night (as a promoter) on April 13 at Melbourne Pavilion. ■ Another western suburbs icon passed last week, with the death of Williamstown Football Club Legend Gerry Callahan. “The Monster” was a colossus on and off the field with a big personality to match his unbelievable football career. He was a Seagulls legend, captain of the Team of the Century, five-time premiership captain and coached the club to two flags. He played 171 games and kicked 75 goals, with the club best and fairest medal named in his honour. Condolences from all sports fans in the west to Peggy and Gerry’s family and friends. A great man. RIP. ■ The Yarraville Club Cricket Club is a flag magnet. In another win in the senior VTCA competition, the boys from Hansen Reserve did it in fine style on the back of another lion-hearted bowling display from Evan Bronca. The veteran took 7-50 off 25 overs. Will Sheridan steered the side home with an unbeaten century assisted by Ben Tupper, who was 50 not out. In the subbies, Williamstown defeated Kew to take the premiership. Tim Gage took a match-winning 5-12 to get Werribee home in the twos. ■ The top end of Australian rules footy might be in great shape financially, but local clubs continue to struggle, with Keilor Park the latest to pull the pin in the EDFL and have its senior men’s teams go into recess. In the WRFL, all eyes will be on Glenorden, which is returning after a similar break. It will be very tough, but the Hawks have been through a lot in recent years. I wish them the best and hope they get the support, on and off the field, they need to make the club strong again.

Keilor Park won’t field open age men’s teams in the Essendon District Football League this season. The club met with the league on Tuesday night, where it informed them it didn’t have enough players to field either senior or reserves sides in division 2. In a statement on the club’s Facebook page, the club confirmed the sad news and apologised for the lateness of the decision. Up until two weeks ago the club was planning to field a senior side, but a reserves side had looked unlikely. “It is with a heavy heart that the KPFC have decided to withdraw our senior team for season 2018,” the statement said. “The decision was agreed as the best way forward to ensure our senior side remain respected and capable of challenging the best in

Thunder make a noise in the Big V’s top flight Keilor Thunder is the surprise Easter leader in the Big V basketball men’s state championship. The newly-promoted Thunder have proven a tough nut to crack for opposition offences in the opening two weeks of the season. A first-up win over Corio Bay Stingrays and an upset victory against Eltham Wildcats has seen the Thunder move into top spot. The common theme in both games was the Thunder’s hard-nosed defence. The Thunder is the stingiest team in the competition so far, giving up just 68.5 points a game. Thunder coach Liam Glascott reckons his outfit is “a great defensive team”. “We focus on a lot of defensive stuff at training,” he said. “Tuesday and Thursday we make sure we’re doing defensive drills, but we also go over the opposition stuff to make sure that we know what they run offensively and how we’re going to defend them. “Our guys really buy into it and that’s a huge advantage for our group.”

Glascott cites Joel Bellman as a prime example of the “energy and effort” that secured the Thunder its opening wins. Bellman’s stats against Eltham do not jump out at you, but his enthusiasm to defend led to stops at important times in the game that were as pivotal as the 21 points provided by Jordan Coleman, the double-double from Hanner Mosquera-Perea and the match-wining three-pointer to Chuck Long. The Thunder’s challenge is to keep that high intensity throughout the season. Keilor’s win over Eltham is up there with the best victories in Glascott’s tenure with the club. Glascott coached the Thunder to a 2-1 series win over Chelsea Gulls in the division 1 grand final series last year, but this league is on another level. But the Thunder can take much confidence out of the Eltham result and a belief they can compete with the best teams in the top flight. “Teams are now going to go, ‘Gee, we’ve got to make sure we show up against Keilor, they’ve

not just come up to make up the numbers’,” Glascott said. “But we don’t get ahead of ourselves – we’ve still got things we’ve got to get better at and we know that. “This competition is going to be a grind, so you can’t take your foot off the pedal. We’ve just got to continue to show up no matter who we play against.” Keilor will return to the court on Sunday when it hosts the McKinnon Cougars at Keilor Basketball Stadium from 3pm. A player to watch will be Thunder captain Long, who is coming off a stellar 17-point, 12-rebound game against Eltham. “His leadership on the floor is handy for us,” Glascott said. “He stepped up really big in the Eltham game for us at both ends of the floor. “He was good defensively, he made the three-point shot with 25 seconds to go to get us up and got a big block at the other end to get us a crucial stop.” Lance Jenkinson

Deer Park redemption By Lance Jenkinson The ghosts of March 22, 2015, have finally been cast aside for Deer Park with the seizing of the 2017-18 Victorian Turf Cricket Association north-west B1 premiership. The bitter memories of that fateful day three years ago came flooding back for the Lions on the final day of their thrilling 15-run grand final win over Williamstown CYMS at Ainsworth Reserve last week. The two grand finals were eerily familiar, but poles apart when it came to the emotions of the Lions players post-game. In the 2014-15 decider, Deer Park held a first-innings lead, albeit a narrow five runs in a low-scoring game. The Lions could not capitalise, though, with Kingsville chasing down the 195 target. One of the most heartbreaking days in Lions’ history has stuck with the players ever since. In this season’s decider, Deer Park had a more significant lead of 50 after the first innings against Williamstown CYMS. But the Lions’ poor batting in the second dig, scoring just 118 for a lead of 168, left the door ajar for CYs. The CYs appeared to be marching to victory in a similar fashion to Kingsville three years ago – but this time Deer Park found a way. The Lions managed to take the last four CYs wickets cheaply to hold on for a famous victory. Lions president Stephen Krstevski was relieved to see the tide of the game turn – but it was far too close for comfort. “We looked gone for all money at one point,” Krstevski said. “I had a chat to [all-rounder] Ricky [Suvada] and we could see they were six down and only needed like 25 runs. “He said to me, it was like a flashback to the Kingsville grand final, it was all coming back to me. That still was really hurting us, so I think the boys were keen to make amends.” The fourth-day heroes for Deer Park were club stalwart Suvada and Sri Lankan import Nilanka Vedagedara, who performed a late rescue mission with five wickets apiece. Cavs finding their groove Green Gully will be hoping to pick up where it left off before Easter in National Premier League soccer. A three-game winning streak by the Cavaliers has moved them up to fourth on the ladder after five rounds. The Cavaliers were a much tighter defensive unit in the past three matches, conceding just twice after leaking six goals in the first two weeks. And they have been a consistent threat in front of goal across all five matches. Kieran Dover has been outstanding in attack for the Cavs with five goals and Nick Krousoratis has kicked four. The Kruni Razov-coached Saints have been lethal in attack, averaging 3.16 goals a game. Luis Covarrubias has been in hot form with six goals. The Saints will be eager to maintain their good form when they travel to Moreland Zebras on Saturday. For winless Sunshine, it has been a disastrous first six weeks. It is rock bottom with a -22 goal difference.
