Top citizen, big surprise

Brimbank’s Citizen of the Year is “blown away” to receive an honour that caps off a lifetime of community work in the area. Rod Boyd was announced as the winner of the award at last week’s presentations, but was unable to receive his gong in person after suffering a back injury – but he told Star Weekly it was a huge honour. “I honestly thought, ‘What hope have I got?’ – so when I heard I had won I was blown away,” Mr Boyd said. “It was a huge thrill for me and my family. My grand-daughter has already told me I have to come to her class with the award for show and tell.” Mr Boyd has played a number of roles in Brimbank, including serving in the police force in the 1970s and as a radio announcer with 3UZ. For the past 21 years, he has been the general manager of community radio station Stereo 974. Stereo 974 has grown into a multicultural broadcaster, with shows in 12 different languages. Mr Boyd has also implemented a small business program for young offenders at Port Phillip Prison, with his “Doin’ Time” program selling T-shirts to raise money for charity. To date, it has raised more $150,000. “I want them (prisoners) to come out of there as better people who are good community citizens, and we’ve had a lot of success with that,” Mr Boyd said. Debate over Australia Day By Tate Papworth Brimbank City Council hasn’t ruled out moving its Australia Day celebrations away from January 26. At last week’s Brimbank Australia Day Awards ceremony, chief executive Helen Morrissey said the council was committed to a respectful debate over the controversial issue. “We [Brimbank council] recognise this particular date is a sensitive subject … and we are committed to having a respectful debate around that subject,” she said.
Last year the Moreland, Darebin and Yarra councils opted to dump January 26 as their day of celebration, arguing that the date was offensive and inappropriate to indigenous Australians. The move prompted the federal government to strip the Darebin and Yarra councils of the right to hold citizenship ceremonies. However the debate was ignited again this month when the Greens announced they were planning to use their numbers in local governments to push for a shift of date. And last week, the State Opposition vowed

to sack councils who do not celebrate Australia Day if elected in November. During a council meeting last September, then Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said the council would discuss the date during the review of its Reconciliation Action Plan. “We’ll be reviewing our Indigenous Action Plan from September through to November this year and we feel this will be a timely period to discuss the matter,” Cr Hedditch said. “This review will be held under the guidance of an experienced indigenous consultant … the findings will be presented back to council to
discuss.” In November, the council hosted two community consultation sessions to help inform the development of the next four-year draft Reconciliation Action Plan. Mayor Margaret Giudice said consultation with indigenous leaders is ongoing. “We’re undertaking consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community representatives and a range of local aboriginal organisations,” Cr Giudice said. “Australia Day is amongst a range of topics discussed as part of this process.”

From troubled teen to a driver of better futures

As a teenager, Michael Lim felt disengaged and facing a bleak future. Yet after surrounding himself with strong mentors, he was able to turn his life around. Mr Lim has since dedicated his life to helping young people who find themselves in similar situations. He has made a profound difference to his community – efforts that were recognised last Monday night. Mr Lim was named as Brimbank’s Young Citizen of the year at the council’s Australia Day awards ceremony.
“I started doing what I do to help young disadvantaged people in Melbourne’s west because I saw myself in them and I wanted to give them all the opportunities I had,” he said. “It’s fantastic to see my work recognised by my local council. It’s a great honour and extremely humbling.” Mr Lim has been a Brimbank youth ambassador since 2016. At the age of 21, he became chief executive of Community Health Advancement and Student Engagement, which aims to improve health literacy among young people in Melbourne’s west.
“The majority of the work I do is volunteer-based,” Mr Lim said. “I do it because I want to bring about long-lasting positive change to the community I belong to. As a year 10 student Mr Lim enrolled in the NITOR program, which is designed to improve the lot of disengaged year 10 boys. “When I was 16 years old I found myself heading down a bad path,” he said. “I was given the opportunity to empower myself and do something about it.” Tate Papworth

Mrs Lonsdale was a founding member of DanceSport Australia and has won three world championships in the sport. She described her latest recognition as a career highlight. “It’s quite an honour and a surreal feeling,” she said. “I’ve been fairly involved in all facets of community life and dance sport and trying to give back a bit. But you don’t ever think about receiving this sort of recognition. It’s a
huge honour, because I’m quite patriotic and a royalist, so I’m thrilled to be recognised by my country in this way.” Noela MacLeod rounded out the Brimbank honours from Government House, with the East Keilor resident appointed as an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia. Ms MacLeod was recognised for her lifetime of service to the Country Women’s Association,
including serving as president, secretary, state archivist, treasurer, magazine editor and competition adjudicator of the Victorian branch. She has served on the national committee for a number of years, and published a number of books for the organisation. She is heavily involved with the international arm of the association, helping empower women and children in communities around the world.

Keilor Park’s Claude Lombard has built an empire on one simple philosophy – you only receive when you give. “When you go and buy yourself a present, you feel nice, but when you give someone a present, you feel a lot better,” Mr Lombard said. That philosophy has led to Mr Lombard being awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia. As co-founder of Lombard the Paper People, Mr Lombard has made a significant contribution to the printing industry and the community for 50 years. He is an Australia Day ambassador, a member of the Australia Day Victoria Committee and a board member of the Melbourne Tourism Authority. In 1980, he played an integral role in helping send a fencing team to the Olympic Games in Moscow under the International Olympic flag. “All the Western countries boycotted the 1980 games in Russia,” Mr Lombard said. “But I believe sport is not political and helped send a team of three people to compete in the fencing over there. “If you don’t have a country, then you’re able to compete under the Olympic flag, which is what we did … a few months later I was sent an honorary Olympic medal, which was nice.” Over the years, the Lombard business has continued to grow, surviving a fire that threatened to ruin the company 14 years ago. “Not many companies could survive a massive fire like we had,” Mr Lombard said. “Everything was wiped out on the Thursday night, but the following Monday we were back open for business.” Mr Lombard credits the influence of his father for much of what he has been able to do. “My father is my greatest teacher,” he said. “Most people are thinking about retirement at 64. He started the business.” Keilor East’s Margaret Lonsdale has also been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, for a lifetime of service to dance sport in Australia. Arts council a great final act By Ewen McRae The fingerprints of the St Albans Community Cooperative can be seen all over the suburb, and its legacy is set to be cemented with the establishment of a St Albans arts council. The group, which has been helping major community projects in St Albans since it was established in 1974, looks set to cease operations in the near future and plans to spend its remaining funds on promoting the arts in an ongoing fashion. Speaking at the Brimbank Australia Day
Awards at the Bowery Theatre, where the group received the Lifetime Achievement Award, co-op secretary Ken Hovenga said the time was right to wind up the group and leave a lasting legacy. “We feel like we’ve achieved a lot, but we’re now ready to retire,” Mr Hovenga said. “We’ve got about $300,000 at the moment, which we need to spend before we can wind up. And we’re thinking about a St Albans arts council – $300,000 to promote the theatre, promote people to use the theatre more, subsidise performances.
“We’re much more interested in what’s happening here than the broader area, so the legacy will be to try and keep the performing arts going in St Albans. Singing, dancing and music and all of that … I hope that’s how it will end up.” The group’s remaining members – Mr Hovenga, Christa Lanzendoerfer, Alan Aisthorpe, Colin Thorpe and Marija Keller – were honoured last week after more than four decades of work in the community, including supporting the St Albans Community Health Centre, the Adult Migrant English Centre,
Horizons Disability Support Group, the Migrant Resource Centre and the Sunshine Hospital. They have also provided $210,000 in scholarships for financially disadvantaged young people in the area, and contributed $2.5 million towards the revamped St Albans Community Centre and Bowery Theatre. “This award is an achievement for the whole of St Albans, not just us,” Mr Hovenga said after the presentation.. “I feel very proud to represent St Albans at this time.”
A big week for big kids Monday marked the beginning of a new chapter for about 3000 children across Brimbank. Alexis Guerra is one of 1500 Brimbank children beginning primary school this week and says she’s excited to start her education. “I’m really looking forward to learning like the big kids do,” Alexis said. While Alexis is excited about starting prep, her mother Bronte Guerra said it was a bittersweet occasion of letting go. “It’s exciting to see her begin this phase of her life, but it’s also a little sad at the same time,” Ms Guerra said. “She’s attending Keilor Primary School, which is where her father and I both went, so we know she’s going to a good school.” But it’s not just primary school pupils starting this week. About 1500 students will begin secondary school studies in Brimbank schools, while 1300 will begin their year 12 studies.
They join 20,100 students heading back to state schools across Brimbank this week. This year 972,700 students will attend a Victorian school, with 543,200 enrolled for primary school and 412,200 attending secondary school. About 80,200 will begin their education with prep studies. Education Minister James Merlino wished all students well for the year ahead. “We are making sure that every student can make the most of school and get the best start in life, regardless of their background or circumstance,” he said. “I wish the 972,000 students heading to school this year all the best.” Tate Papworth Alexis tries on her new uniform. Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating an aggravated burglary in Taylors Lakes on January 16. According to police, an unknown man entered an Apollo Road home about 10.55am. He ransacked each bedroom, stealing electrical items, mobile phones and designer handbags. Two teenagers were inside asleep at the time and were physically uninjured. The man left the property in an orange Holden Barina driving east along Apollo Road. He is described as Middle Eastern, between 30 to 35 years old, unshaven with dark hair, wearing a Chicago Bulls hat, black Under Armour T-shirt, black Everlast pants and dark coloured runners with white soles.

Brimbank welcomed 150 new Australian citizens last week. The new Australians took the citizenship pledge at the council’s annual Australia Day event, which was held at Sunshine’s Kevin Wheelahan Gardens. Australia Day ambassador William Lye said the ceremony was a melting pot of cultures. “Over 30 countries were represented during the ceremony, which was amazing,” Mr Lye said. “Brimbank is an incredibly multicultural area and that was reflected in the diversity shown at the ceremony.” While the day serves as a time to celebrate the nation, Mr Lye said welcoming new citizens served an equally important purpose.

“Becoming an Australian citizen gives these people a sense of identity and belonging,” he said. “Quite often these people are over here, they’re contributing to society, but can’t have a say in its future. “Becoming a citizen gives them greater employment rights and the opportunity to do things like vote, which is incredibly important.” Mr Lye has been an Australia Day ambassador for four years – a role he was drawn to by his desire to promote the country to new arrivals. “I’m very committed to spreading the word around that if you come from overseas, there’s a lot of freedom and opportunities afforded to you here in Australia.” Tate Papworth
St Albans house fire escape
A St Albans resident had a lucky escape from a burning house last week, after MFB crews were called to fight a blaze at a single-story weatherboard in Lambolle Court just before noon on January 20. The fire escalated, with nine trucks responding, including rescue and aerial units. Approximately 28 firefighters battled the blaze, bringing it under control in less than 45 minutes. The house sustained substantial damage. MFB’s specialist fire investigation unit is investigating the cause. Feral goats on the loose By Goya Dmytryshchak A herd of feral goats believed to have originated from an abattoir is eating its way through more than $100,000 of vegetation along the banks of Kororoit Creek at Brooklyn. In 2013, about 60 feral goats were removed from the area. Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek president Geoff Mitchelmore said either some had slipped through the net or more had since escaped and bred, with a herd of about 50 now living on the old Brooklyn tip owned by Pelligra Group. He said Melbourne Water had spent more than $100,000 of people’s water rates over the past three years on planting many thousands of trees and shrubs along the creek. “All of these thousands of indigenous trees and shrubs have been eaten by a reported 50 or so feral goats that have made their home at Old Geelong Road, Brooklyn, the old landfill site previously owned by Cleanaway, now Pelligra Group,” Mr Mitchelmore said. “City Circle Demolition, Brooklyn, through its environmental program, have thousands of indigenous trees and shrubs ready to plant along Kororoit Creek but cannot because the goats will destroy them.” Mr Mitchelmore said his group and Friends of Kororoit Creek wanted Pelligra to remove the feral goats and install rabbit-proof fencing along its four property boundaries. City Circle manager Matt Skidmore said planting was due to begin in April or May. “But due to the wild goat population in the area, we’re going to plant a 20-metre trial area and then we’re going to see what effect because in the past, with Melbourne Water and with us, a lot of our planting has been destroyed by the goat population,” he said. Melbourne Water’s Ben English said since

2009 up to 10,000 native trees and bushes had been planted on the eastern banks of Kororoit Creek at Brooklyn. “Unfortunately, a significant number of these plants have been destroyed or damaged by feral goats in the area,” he said. “A collaborative effort to control the goats was successful in 2013, but a new group of goats is now roaming freely on privately-owned land
between Somerville Road and Old Geelong Road. This land directly adjoins the east bank of Kororoit Creek. “This land is not owned by Melbourne Water and it is the responsibility of the land owner to control pest animals on their property under the Catchment and Land Protection Act.” A Pelligra representative said no one was available to comment.

Keilor Downs lizards moved A proposed Keilor Downs development won’t have any adverse effect on the threatened striped legless lizard, according to Brimbank council. Soho Living has sought permission to construct a residential mixed use development at 7B Copernicus Way. An environmental report said the action would likely result in a significant impact on the grassland, ecological community and the threatened species. But Brimbank city development director Stuart Menzies said a plan has been put in place to ensure no harm was done to the species. “Following a statutory assessment, the council granted a planning permit for 100 dwellings at 7B Copernicus Way in Keilor Downs, as well as a permit to remove native vegetation from the same site,” he said. “The permit to remove native vegetation included conditions to offset the native vegetation removal and for the preparation of a translocation plan for the striped legless lizard. Mr Menzies said the plan had already returned favourable results. “The plan has seen the relocation of striped legless lizards from Copernicus Way to a secure council grassland reserve with an existing lizard population,” he said. “Over a four-month period, concluding in December, 2017, a total of 86 striped legless sizards were translocated from Copernicus Way.” Tate Papworth

Nurses on a mission Two Brimbank nurses are ready to give back to those in need. Jonathan Hardwick and Brett Timms will take to the ocean this February onboard the Mercy Ship - a ship which docks 10 months of the year in various countries along west Africa and other nations in need of surgical services. Mr Timms said the opportunity to make a difference to those in need was an opportunity the two Alfred Hospital nurses couldn’t refuse. “We really wanted to use the skills we’ve developed over our careers to give back,” he said. “We’ve got access to universal health care here and they’ve got access to pretty much zero over there.” The ship will be docked in Cameroon and the two men will spend two and a half weeks where
they will help in performing life changing procedures. “There are people with massive tumours around their head and neck, which makes things like eating difficult,” Mr Timms said. In performing functions and exercising powers in relation to activities associated with the encouragement of commerce and retail activity in the area for which it is proposed the Special Rate will be declared, the Council intends to levy and spend an amount of $135,283.09 for the first year of the Scheme, with such Special Rate levy amounts increasing at a rate of 2% per annum, raising in total an amount of $704,018.63 over the five year period of the Scheme. The Special Rate is to be declared, and will remain in force, for a period of five years commencing on 1 July 2018 and ending on 30 June 2023. For the period of the Scheme, the Special Rate will be declared and assessed as follows: “Zone One” Benefit Area The Special Rate will be based on the 2016 capital improved value (CIV) of each property multiplied by an amount of 0.000580, combined with a minimum charge of $110 and a maximum charge of $2,200 in each year and increasing at a rate of 2% per annum. Zone Three Street Name and Property Numbers (inclusively): Harvester Road (80). The Special Rate will be levied by the Council sending a notice of levy annually to the persons who are liable to pay the Special Rate, which will require that the Special Rate must be paid in the following manner • by one annual payment to be paid in full by the due date fixed by the Council in the notice, which will be a date not less than 30 days after the date of issue of the notice; or • by four instalments, to be paid by the dates which are fixed by the Council in the notice. Council will consider cases of financial and other hardship and may reconsider other payment options for the Special Rate. For the purposes of having determined the total amount of the Special Rate to be levied under the Scheme, the Council considers and formally determines for the purposes of sections 163(2)(a), (2A) and (2B) of the Act that the estimated proportion of the total benefits of the Scheme to which the performance of the function and the exercise of the power relates (including all special benefits and community benefits) that will accrue as special benefits to all of the persons who are liable to pay the Special Rate is in a ratio of 1:1 (or 100%). This is on the basis that, in the opinion of the Council, all of the services and activities to be provided from the expenditure of the Special Rate are marketing, promotion and advertising related and will accordingly only benefit those commercially rated properties and the businesses included in the Scheme that are used, or reasonably capable of being used, for retail, commercial or professional purposes.
Tiling
Copies of the proposed declaration of the Special Rate (which includes a detailed map of all properties included in the Scheme Area and the amounts payable by each property) are available for inspection during normal office hours at the Council Customer Service Centre, 301 Hampshire Road, Sunshine for a period of at least 28 days after the date of the publication of this notice, being until 27 February 2018. Any person may make a written submission to the Council under sections 163A and 223 of the Act. In addition, any person who will be required to pay the Special Rate to be imposed by the proposed declaration, whether an owner or an occupier of a property included in the Scheme, has a right to object to the proposed declaration and may also make a written objection to the Council under section 163B of the Act. An occupier is entitled to exercise the right of objection if they submit documentary evidence with the objection which shows that it is a condition of the lease under which the person is an occupier that the occupier is to pay the Special Rate. Written submissions to be submitted to the Council under section 223 of the Act and written objections to be lodged with the Council under section 163B of the Act must be received by the Council by 5pm on 27 February 2018. Submissions and objections must be in writing and addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Brimbank City Council, PO Box 70, Sunshine 3020. Any person who has made a written submission under section 223 of the Act and has requested to be heard in support of their written submission is entitled to appear in person or to be represented by a person specified in the submission at the meeting of the Sunshine Special Rate Hearing Committee at 6.30pm on 21 March 2018 at the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre, 301 Hampshire Road, Sunshine. Any person making a written submission under section 223 of the Act is advised that the Council is no longer required to make available for public inspection submissions received in accordance with section 223 of the Act. Accordingly, all submissions and personal information in submissions will be handled as authorised or required by law, including under the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014. Council will consider any written submissions and take into account any objections in accordance with sections 163A, 163B and 223 of the Act. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir enjoys a new twist on Sri Lankan food The White Elephant brings a real point of difference to Indian-dominated West Footscray, and is doing so with style. We found the service very attentive and the wait times perfectly appropriate for the food at hand. Our first glances at the menu are quite bracing in terms of price, based on our long enjoyment of extremely affordable Sri Lankan food at a variety of places. But closer perusal of the food list reveals some outright cheaper gems. Three rotis, one veg curry and one meat curry for $12, for instance. Or a rice-and-curry combo of two veg curries and one meat curry for $15. Justin is delighted with his curry combo deal. The curry deals can be customised according to customer wishes – rather than being a mix of whatever the staff choose out in the kitchen. The mild beef curry is some way short of tender, but not tough, either – perfectly normal and acceptable for this kind of food. The eggplant moju disappears at pace. But it is the potato curry that is the star – so simple and tasty! It is a vegetable selection that shines brightest in Bennie’s line-up, as well. The okra dish is as good as we’ve enjoyed. The vegetable holds its vibrant greenness, is not in the least cooked down and shows not the slightest sign of sliminess. We’re all taken with the cashew curry, which is way more creamy and moist than the photograph suggests.

One of the main things Bennie enjoys about Sri Lankan food is the ability to order pork. His pork curry here is similar to those he’s enjoyed elsewhere – dry, charry, enjoyable. But beware – its is very, very fatty. My lamprais ($17) is something entirely different. I’ve enjoyed other versions of this very traditional Sri Lankan meal – cooked in a banana leaf – but never quite this hearty. The stars are a couple of fat charred, juicy and supremely delicious prawns. There’s an orb of tuna cutlet and a heap of chicken and the same pork as in Bennie’s curry. The chicken is overcooked by Western, charcoal grill standards, but that is – I strongly suspect – entirely normal for this dish. My meal is so meaty, so macho that the phrase “meat lovers� comes to mind – something more usually associated with pizzas. As well, the fried egg – very good – lends the dish something of the aspect of an old-school English fry-up. SPORT Strikers step it up to field a senior team The desire to provide a senior team for its juniors to progress into is behind Westside Strikers’ decision to field senior teams this season. The club, which was formed in 2015, has been just a junior club until now, but with the club and the sport growing, club officials were thrilled to take the next step. President Sam Raniolo said it was an exciting time for the club. “We’ve got a lot of juniors especially in the 16 to 18-year-old age group,” he said. “We need to have a pathway for these players and the only way to do that is to have a senior team. “There’s been a lot of expressions of interest and the parents of the kids who are in the 15s, 16s and 18s are excited about it, as they don’t have to move clubs.”
Raniolo said they had put a lot of hard work to get to the point of fielding senior sides. He said they hoped to add a senior women’s team either this year, or in the next couple of years. “We’ve gone from 200 odd kids to about 380 kids last year,” he said. “FFV and Melton Council has been really good in helping us get it up and going.” The Strikers will play in the FFV state league 5 west competition. Raniolo said they would also have a reserves side and would consider a masters side too. Zoran Kitanovski, who previously coached Brimbank Stallions, has been named senior coach. He led the Stallions to promotion in 2016 from state league 4 to state league three, and coached the side for most of last season
before he and the club parted ways. The club again earned promotion. Jose Groba (senior assistant) and Salih Soze (reserves coach) also come to the club having been at Brimbank Stallions along with Kitanovski. Raniolo said the coaching team would bring a lot of knowledge with them. Despite fielding a side for the first time, the president said they weren’t just planning on making up the numbers. “Hopefully we can get promoted in the first season,” he said. “We want to be the biggest club in Melbourne’s west.” For more information, https://www. facebook.com/westsidestrikersfc/ Tara Murray

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Kevin Atkinson and Wayne Connor are not names that many Bulldogs supporters of the last few decades would be aware of, but last week both were very rightly made Life Members of the Western Bulldogs. Both men have given years of service to the club in the stats area of the football department. I still see them both at the past players and officials function at home games. The debate about premiership players receiving instant Life Membership is interesting, with Brian Lake the classic example of someone who won three premierships with Hawthorn but wants to be remembered as a Bulldogs Life Member and a Hawks premiership player. That seems right to me. Does Joel Hambling deserve to be a Bulldogs Life member (23 games, 1 premiership)? I think not. Well done to Kevin and Wayne and also Gary Kent, Easton Wood and Simon Dalrymple who were also honoured. ■ The Werribee Park Golf Club won’t be hosting the Legends Pro Am this year, having decided to channel the funds into the new members’ lounge extension. Last year the club underwrote the event and while it was a success, the board thought the funds best suited to something all members could enjoy. It will be interesting to see how golfers adapt to the proposed rule changes that are being trialled between now and next year. Most are aimed at speeding up the game and making some very convoluted rules more practical and easier to interpret (AFL football please note). It looks very sensible to me.
By Lance Jenkinson Keilor wants to challenge for the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division crown, but on the evidence of Saturday’s play it still has plenty to do. To be the best, the Blues have to beat the best. Defending premier and long-time competition powerhouse Yarraville Club remains the yardstick in that regard. The Blues, sitting healthy in third place on the back of three consecutive wins, went in to the game between the two with enough momentum to suggest they could pose a threat. But it all turned pear-shaped quickly, Keilor’s top order crumbling spectacularly under the pressure. The Blues lost their first three wickets for 11, had 46 on the board when they were six down and were at panic stations at 7-77. Blues senior cricket operations manager Sean McManus was disappointed with the application of his batsmen, particularly the top order. “That top order needed to dig in a bit,” he said. “Yeah, it was tough going early. bowling a good line and bowling pretty sharp, and there might have been a bit in the pitch early. But we needed to bat through the tough period and not lose as many wickets. “It was disappointing on our home ground not to build a more competitive score.” Keilor eventually settled on 152 in 54 overs. Blues captain Kaushal Lokuarachchi salvaged the innings with 56 off 72. A late 30 not out off 51 balls from Matthew Darvan was another boost for the Blues. “They were critical runs to build the score to something the bowlers could bowl at,” McManus said. “When you play the top team in the competition, you need to make a bigger score than that.” Lokuarachchi drew praise for his knock, coming in at No.5 when the wickets were falling around him and steadying the ship. “It’s as good as I’ve seen him bat recently,” McManus said. Yarraville Club finished the day on 1-64 off 26 overs. The Blues claimed the early scalp of Johnathon Blake to have the Clubbers 1-4, but their joy was short lived. “We needed a couple of quick wickets and we
got the one real early, but then Yarraville Club batted really well,” McManus said. “They’re certainly in the box seat.” In north-west division, St Albans has the upper hand over Sunshine United at Kings Park Reserve. The Saints are 2-18 in response to United’s 113. Keilor Park has already coughed up first-innings points to Aberfeldie. The Devils were bowled out for just 64 and Abers crept into the lead to finish the day on 7-76. PEGS was bowled out for just 56 by Craigieburn, which took the lead with 6-61. In Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, Taylors Lakes kept its season alive with a 21-run first-innings win over Coburg at Coburg City Oval. Chasing 130, the Lions made 3-151, on the back of a team-high 77 from opener Michael Brne and 69 to Dilan Chandima, before declaring in a bid to get an outright result. The Lions made Coburg sweat, having the hosts in trouble at 7-91 before the close of play. Taylors Lakes will host Kew in a two-day game at Lionheart Reserve starting on Saturday.

By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park’s stunning upset win over of top-of-the-ladder Altona in the Bowls Victoria premier division at Ballarat Road on Saturday has the club asking: “Why not us?” Why can’t the Lions break the mould of promoted teams struggling to avoid relegation? Why can’t the newcomers dare to dream about playing finals? The Lions truly arrived on Saturday, beating the premiership favourites and ruling the west – if only for a day. Lions president Neil Cromie was thrilled with a result that flew in the face of the cliche of promoted clubs tending to go straight back down again. “I think a few of the other clubs expected us to be the same,” he said. “I think this win that shows we’re nowhere near going to be the easy beats that people thought we were.” It was a big day for Deer Park. The Lions unveiled the new lounge that will be a centrepiece of the club’s hosting of the premier division grand final. And all five teams won on the day – but the biggest surprise was the top side’s dismantling of Altona with an 85-64 scoreline. The overall score was bolstered by a big rink win to David Holt, who thrashed Altona’s Brad Peck 28-6. “We had one rink get up by a big margin, which obviously helps,” Cromie said. “They jumped them early, got out to a big margin and kept it – and, if anything, gradually increased it. “By the same token, all our players played really well.” Deer Park claimed victory in three of the four rinks.
The Western Region Football League will launch a women’s netball competition this season. WRFL Netball will be run out of the Victoria University Community Sports Stadium at the Whitten Oval on Friday nights. The season will begin on April 20, running for 12 weeks with a finals series. The netball competition marks further growth for women’s sport within the league, with the WRFL already announcing it would have a standalone women’s football competition this year. Last season, the WRFL played in a merged competition with the Essendon District Football League. “This entrance into netball reinforces our marked intent to create sporting environments where everyone is welcome,” WRFL chief executive Matthew Duck said. “At the heart of this initiative is a desire to increase the number of people playing sport, but a spin off benefit is that local footy clubs have another avenue available to them to build their respective membership bases.” The initiative has generated plenty of interest from clubs. Already 12 clubs – Braybrook, Caroline Springs, Glen Orden, Hoppers Crossing, Manor Lakes, North Footscray, Parkside, Point Cook, Point Cook Centrals, Spotswood, Sunshine and Wyndham Suns – have flagged a desire to field a team.
