Sale of the century By Tate Papworth A Sydenham property with a hefty price tag could soon set a Brimbank record. The five-bedroom house at 34-38 Pecks Road, Sydenham, has been listed with an asking price of $3.75-$4 million. Professionals Real Estate senior sales consultant Sam Mezzatesta said that if the property sold for that kind of price, it would be the highest selling price for a Brimbank residential premises. “It would 100 per cent be a record for the area,” he said. “I think the previous one was around the $3.5 million mark, so if $4 million is achieved, it would definitely be a new benchmark.” Mr Mezzatesta said development potential of the property, which is about 0.4 hectares (just shy of an acre), made it special. “It’s very unusual to have a property of this size in this area,” he said. “An acre block next to Watergardens with this potential is quite rare, which is reflected in the asking price.” While the price tag is hefty, Mr Mezzatesta said the property was attracting attention. “It’s been a bit slow given the asking price is high, but that also means we only really hear from genuine buyers,” he said. “We’ve had interest from developers who have made offers around $3 million. “We actually had one developer offer $3.5 million, which has since been retracted and revised to $3.3 million.” The property also features a fully self-contained two-bedroom unit, a five-car carport, electric gates and a large pond. The house itself, which is roughly 43 squares, has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a three-car garage. It’s set to the side of the large area of land that Mr Mezzatesta said made development options for the buyer relatively simple. “There’s definitely an opportunity to develop this land further,” he said. “The owners are just waiting for the right price.”

Chop causes little dread Telia Coverdale has taken four years to grow and maintain her dreadlocks – now she’s getting ready to shave the lot off for the Leukemia Foundation. The 18-year-old will shed her mane in a bid to raise at least $2000 for blood cancer research. She will get the clipper treatment from her hairdresser sister on March 17. The World’s Greatest Shave is the foundation’s major annual fundraiser with many participants around the west getting the chop for charity. Telia hopes the money she raises will help give families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need, as well as help drive vital research. “Shaving my hair is something I always considered doing, however I never thought I would grow the courage to actually go ahead with the idea,” she said. “After four years of my beloved dreads I thought that maybe it’s time to let go – and what better way to do it then raise money for a worthy cause? “I’ve seen many families close to my own have horrible experiences with cancer and leukemia, so I thought if I can make a difference, small or big, it is worth it. “I think if we all adopted this mindset to issues in society we could support one another. “That’s why I have chosen to do so – so that maybe others can grow the courage to do things that support organisations like the Leukemia Foundation. “The response people have shown already is overwhelming.” Telia’s friends and family will have opportunities to cut off one of her dreadlocks in return for a donation. Train operators need to lift their game: PTV Public Transport Victoria has raised the bar for performance on metropolitan train lines, calling for higher standards of service delivery. Figures for December show the Sunbury line performance was steady throughout December, with 99.4 per cent of services delivered and 89.4 per cent of services delivered on time, which was similar to previous months. But PTV chief executive Jeroen Weimar said tougher performance benchmarks mean Metro must improve. Both Metro and Yarra Trams
had their contracts renewed on November 30, 2017. “We’ve raised the bar in the new contracts with our train and tram operators to deliver a better travel experience for our passengers,” Mr Weimar said. “After the first full month of the new contracts, both operators still need to lift their game”. December was a difficult month for the operators, which had to deal with the tragic Flinders Street pedestrian incident and extreme weather events.
Ballarat line V/Line services had a drop in performance across December, with 94.7 per cent of services delivered (down from 98 per cent the previous month) and 83.9 per cent of services on time (down from 86.3 per cent). “Our aim in 2018 and beyond is to continue improving every line on our regional network, with the $1.57 billion Regional Rail Revival set to fast track giving regional Victorians the services they deserve,” Mr Weimar said.
“We acknowledge there are factors the operators cannot control, but we still require answers as to what they are going to do to improve future performance,” Mr Weimar said. Metro previously had an overall performance target of on-time services of 88 per cent, but is now being required to deliver 92 per cent. Under the new contracts, Metro can face performance penalties of up to $1.25 million each month. Whether penalties apply for December will be determined in coming weeks.

By Tate Papworth Residents of Sunshine’s Phoenix Street are calling for a “dangerous” laneway alongside Bunnings Warehouse to be significantly overhauled. They say the laneway is being used by motorists avoiding the notorious intersection at Ballarat and McIntyre roads. One concerned resident said it was only a matter of time until disaster struck and that he had asked for the laneway’s access to Phoenix Street to be closed. He said an incident involving a truck at the site recently had heightened his fears. A truck became stuck, narrowly missing a fence of a neighbouring childcare centre.

“It’s just so unsafe,” said the resident. “The petrol leaking from that truck endangered not only the children at the childcare centre next door, but also other houses in the street. “At the moment, cars are just going everywhere.” Residents have asked for a steel barrier to be installed to stop further incidents and for additional signage to be put in place. Bunnings property general manager Andrew Marks said the company had made some safety upgrades following the incident. “We are aware of an incident involving a truck near the goods inwards area of our Sunshine store,” he said. “As a result, we have installed signage in the area and added line-marking arrows to ensure drivers safely navigate through the area. “We are currently investigating any further improvements that can be made.” Brimbank city development director Stuart Menzies said the council was aware of the issue.

Commuters using Deer Park station had reason to smile last week with work completed on new carpark spaces. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz announced the completion of the project last week, the 272 new carpark spaces more than doubling the existing capacity. Ms Kairouz said the upgrades would help alleviate stress at the station being generated by the area’s booming population. “The west is growing and we are planning for the future by getting Deer Park Station these 272 extra spaces,” Ms Kairouz said. “With more people parking at the station, it will ease pressure on key local roads and residential streets.” The work – including installation of new lighting, line markings, CCTV and signage to improve safety and station access – began in June, 2016. The works were completed as part of the $20 million Station Car Park Upgrades Program, through which more than 2100 extra parking spaces are being provided at regional and metropolitan train stations. The Deer Park carparks come almost a year after Brimbank council introduced two-hour parking limits in nearby streets in a bid to stop commuters clogging residential areas. The new carparks also come soon after the addition of 219 extra weekly off-peak and morning services for Deer Park passengers.

Short-cut puts lives at risk

Top gift back on track By Tate Papworth One of the biggest events on the Brimbank sports calendar is back. The Keilor Gift will be held on Saturday, February 10, after the Brimbank council increased funding for the event. Keilor Gift chairman Hayden Kelly said the 2018 installment of the event won’t miss a beat, despite the Gift having a year off in 2017. “We’ve previously had a year off when we were re-doing the surface and that had no impact on the next event, so I wouldn’t expect this year to be any different,” he said.
While the Gift is the day’s main event, Mr Kelly said festivities would start early in the day and continue well into the night. “The Keilor Traders Association is on board this year and there’ll be lots of entertainment held at Keilor Village and at the ground,” he said. “There’ll be buskers, face-painting, an animal petting zoo, rides – and we’ll cap it all off with a fireworks display.” The woodchopping is once more being tipped to be a significant attraction. “We’ve got a strong women’s woodchopping event for the first time this year,” Mr Kelly said. “We’re very excited to have Caroline Wassink,
who is part of the Australian team and a world champion, coming down to compete at the event.” While there’s something for everyone to enjoy, Mr Kelly said the Gift would be a fitting main event. “We’ve had good solid numbers for the entries into the Gift and the field should be a pretty strong one,” he said. “The women’s Gift has also had really strong numbers and should be a great event, too.” The Keilor Gift meeting will be held at its traditional home, Keilor Recreation Reserve, from 1.30-9.30pm, February 10.

Sunshine North residents have raised safety concerns after an increase in people illegally crossing the train tracks near Cranbourne Avenue. Nearby residents said they had seen a number of people cutting through old fences at the end of Cranbourne Avenue and walking across the tracks, heightening fears of a tragic accident. Concerns were raised with the Australian Rail Track Corporation, which sent a letter to nearby residents reminding them of the dangers of avoiding designated crossing areas. Corporation corridor manager Adam Donati said it was important to remind everyone, especially children, of the dangers involved in unsafe rail crossings. “We want to avoid a situation where someone is seriously hurt or killed,” he said. “It takes a train travelling at speed up to two kilometres to come to a complete stop. “Each year in Australia, on average 166 collisions take place between trains, people and vehicles, devastating families, communities and train drivers. “Please remind children they must not cross or play near the rail corridor.” Mr Donati is urging anyone who witnesses illegal track crossing to report it on 1300 550 402 or at enviroline@artc. com.au Ewen McRae

They say lower water levels make the significant weed coverage even more visible. Mr Viner said the council did use water from the lake. But he said the drop in levels was largely created by evaporation, which can
be as much as 20 millimetres on hot, windy days. “The council does capture excess storm water in Lake Caroline for the purposes of watering the sporting grounds at Caroline Springs Recreation Reserve,” he said. “But compared to the volume of water in Lake Caroline, this use is very limited. “Low water levels at the lake are a result of a lack of rainfall and evaporation.”
Plenty of fans for lunar party Weekend rain failed to keep away eager festival-goers last week, making another St Albans Lunar Festival a huge success. About 70,000 people packed St Albans town centre, eager to experience one of the biggest Lunar New Year festivals in Melbourne and soak up the food and entertainment on offer. Organiser Ross Morfea said the festival got lucky when the rain eased, but the support was as strong as ever. “We were setting up on Saturday night and it was raining heavily, but it cleared on Sunday morning and became a fantastic day,” Mr Morfea said. “It was absolutely chocker-block mayhem on the day – you couldn’t move at 6pm there were that many people there. “It was an absolute belter of a day. The food stalls were pretty much sold out by 8.30. Families were everywhere enjoying the entertainment … it’s a really multicultural day which is fantastic to see.” The climax of the festival was a 20-minute fireworks show, which was well received by all. Mr Morfea said planning would soon begin to top this year’s festival in 2019. “I’m just starting to wind down now, but pretty soon we’ll start thinking of different things we can do,” he said. “It takes a good six months to plan it and we always want to make the next one better.” Ewen McRae

A group of fed-up Caroline Springs residents has formed a committee in an effort to have the suburb’s centrepiece lake returned to its former glory. The committee, which is being led by former Brimbank and Keilor mayor Charlie Apap, says Lake Caroline has significantly deteriorated in recent years. “When Delfin had control of this lake, it was perfect – we rarely had a problem,” Mr Apap said. “Since the Melton City Council have taken over, it’s gotten worse and worse. “Weeds are overgrown and sprouting right across the lake, the fountain hasn’t been turned on for at least eight months and the stagnant water produces an odour in warmer months. “I’ve had many years experience working on councils. “We don’t want to work against the council – we want to work with them to get something done,” he said. Melton operations acting manager Rishi Viner disputed the group’s claims. “Melton City Council officers have inspected Lake Caroline, and after testing the water quality, determined the water was clear and in a very healthy condition,” he said. “The council conducts regular scheduled cleans of Lake Caroline – one to two times a week. “Additional boat-based aquatic plant and litter collections have been scheduled over the coming weeks.” Mr Viner said the council was hoping to have the fountain fully operational in the near future. “While attempting to fix the fountain at Lake Caroline, officers discovered the pump and motor will need to be replaced,” he said.

St Albans man arrested

A 34-year-old St Albans man was arrested in dramatic fashion near the MCG last week after police received reports of an erratic driver in Melbourne’s CBD about 4.10pm on January 16. Police observed the vehicle soon after at the intersection of Wellington Parade and Powlett Street, where it was intercepted. At least 15 police vehicles swarmed the scene and armed members arrested the man without incident.

said. “I’m hoping this will allow me to build a bigger network.” Araos began to realise her talent from a very young age. “When I was in primary school I’d draw a lot, usually my idols or cartoons,” she said. “I realised what I was drawing looked pretty realistic … I felt like I might have something.” The exhibition offers a wide range of portrait subjects, but Araos said one piece stood out. “I’m really proud of the Amy Winehouse piece – I’ve made it the centrepiece of the exhibition,” she said. Uni change leads to more offers By Tate Papworth Victoria University is lauding its newly introduced first year learning model following a significant spike in the number of first round offers it was able to make. In total, the university made 3804 first round offers through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre. The number is a 6.5 per cent increase in the number of offers made by the university last year, despite the university having the same or, in some cases, higher entry requirements for
courses in 2018 and fewer courses on offer. The rise is the largest recorded among Victoria’s nine universities. Victoria University vice chancellor Peter Dawkins attributed the rise to the new teaching model. “This is a strong endorsement for our new First Year teaching model which will be unique to Australia,” Professor Dawkins said. “The system of learning, which has been used throughout Sweden for 50 years and for more than 40 years in parts of North America, maximises the ability of students to master
each unit of study.” Rather than juggling four study units throughout a 16-week semester, first year students at the university complete one unit every four weeks, studying in smaller groups with one lecturer. “The new teaching model excited a lot of VCE students when we visited secondary colleges,” Professor Dawkins said. “It will be great for them as they transition from school to university and are able to see exactly how they are tracking every four weeks.” Nursing proved to be the most popular course among school leavers, with 458 first
round offers made for the university’s bachelor of nursing course. Bachelor of business (255), bachelor of paramedicine (229) and bachelor of education (160) rounded out the top four. While the new teaching model is designed to benefit school leavers, Professor Dawkins said mature age students will also enjoy its advantages. “Juggling work or home responsibilities with university can be a challenge but this teaching model, which we have seen first-hand, has shown us how much more helpful this learning model is.”
MKR sizzle in St Albans One of Australia’s most watched television programs is coming to Brimbank. Kim, a St Albans resident, is competing in the Channel Seven cooking show My Kitchen Rules. The first round has contestants turning their homes into instant restaurants that host the other teams and judges Pete Evans and Manu Feildel. Kim and her friend, Suong, chose Kim’s St Albans home as their venue. Kim said it was a surreal experience. “I had neighbours asking me why Manu and Pete were arriving at my house,” she said. “It was a strange, yet fantastic experience.” The duo, both Vietnamese refugees, have been friends since high school and had long harboured a desire to audition for the show. “Each year, Suong and I would watch the show and talk about applying, but it was only this season that we took that leap,” Kim said. “I
couldn’t believe it when they rang to say we’d been successful.” The pair hopes to show the nation exactly what real Vietnamese food is, but Kim said there was another motivation driving them. “We’re doing this for ourselves, but we’re also doing this for our families,” she said. “We have seven children between us and we want to do them proud.” Kim describes her participation in the show as a great experience, but she admits to having some nerves about the increased profile that comes with it. But on the whole, she said the experience exceeded her expectations and she hoped it would help make her dreams a reality. “I really want to open my own cafe,” she said. “I’d love to stay locally in Brimbank, but I’m also looking at inner-city areas because finding suitable premises is proving challenging.” Tate Papworth

Tracking trouble spots By Tate Papworth More than 750,000 Australians are treated for a form of skin cancer every year, prompting medical professionals to call for greater awareness. Deer Park Doctors Clinic doctor Niresh Madhanpall says the practice has recently increased its skin-care services and is encouraging residents to come in for a check. “We’ve recently invested in a dermascope, which is a significant tool in helping to detect skin cancer,” Dr Madhanpall said. “The tool allows us to go over skin lesions, which then get uploaded to the clinic phone. “It picks up things like the height and depth of a lesion.” Dr Madhanpall said the new service, combined with the warmer weather, had resulted in an increase in the number of people coming in for skin checks. But he said greater awareness was needed. “It’s summer, people take off their clothes, they notice things and don’t always do something about it,” he said. “This allows us to create a detailed mole map and keep on top of anything that could become suspicious.” Dr Madhanpall said Australians were over-represented in skin cancer, with one in three Australians diagnosed with a form of the disease by the time they are 70. “This is about improving community health and making a real difference,” he said. “It’s a new year and an opportune time to get any suspicious spots looked at.”

A Caroline Springs 11-year-old has overcome a devastating health diagnosis and is back doing what he loves most; playing cricket. Houston Larcart reported pain in his leg after a game in early 2017, and after getting a blood test to check for glandular fever his family was shocked to learn he had acute myeloid leukemia. What followed was five and a half months in the Royal Children’s Hospital receiving chemotherapy. All through it, Houston’s goal was simply to get back to playing cricket. Houston was so unwell from the treatments he would throw up 12 times a day on average and had to be fed through a tube. He underwent bone marrow biopsies and had chemotherapy injected into his spine. In August last year, Houston completed his final round of chemotherapy. “When we came out of hospital, cricket season was just beginning and because his
cricket club didn’t know when he would be back, they had saved his spot in the team,” Mr Larcart said. “Cricket gave the family purpose and something to focus on, as our end goal was to get Houston back on the playing field. “Although his first game back was hard because we could see he was in pain, it didn’t stop him from giving it his all and to us, that felt like we had reached the finish line. “He was disappointed in his first game back as he thought he would play better, but we all sat around and had a cry together saying the most important thing is that you’re playing cricket and are out of hospital, it really put it into perspective.” Caroline Springs Cricket Club raised money for the family while Houston was in hospital, and held a presentation day at the hospital to present him with his trophies from last season.
On August 18, 2017, Nicola Akurangi failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court to answer charges including cultivating a narcotic plant, handling stolen goods and traffic matters. Three warrants were issued for her arrest. A further charge and warrant to arrest was issued on August 24, 2017 at the same court for the offence of failing to answer bail. Police are seeking information as to Akurangi’s current whereabouts. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
On July 12, 2017, Paul Sacco failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court to answer charges including theft, handling stolen goods and contravening a community corrections order. An all-out road blitz involving the use of road blocks and a police helicopter is being planned for the western suburbs. Police are making detailed plans for the blitz following the success of a similar campaign in Dandenong last Saturday night. Detective Chief Inspector John Cook of Dandenong told The Advocate yesterday that Saturday night’s blitz had resulted in more than 100 road bookings.
The federal government has made available more than 500 hectares of vacant land and has asked the local community how it thinks the land should be used. Previously the site of the Albion Explosives Factory, the land is about the size of Collingwood and Fitzroy put together. It is the biggest urban land development program government has undertaken since Canberra was designed.
A major crime-fighting squad in Melbourne’s west has been scrapped because of funding difficulties, police confirmed this week. The district surveillance unit, a covert squad set up in the late 1980s to monitor and curb crime activity, was disbanded last Friday. Members have been sent back to their original precincts.
Police say it’s not safe to walk the streets of Sunshine alone at night. The warning comes after a series of brutal muggings, but Sunshine police say they are working hard to curb the violence. Detective Senior Constable Robert Galtieri said police were concerned by the number of serious incidents in the area recently.

MY BRIMBANK Adam Turnbull is a professional actor and acting teacher with more than 20 years’ experience. He’s recently brought his acting program to Brimbank. He spoke with Tate Papworth about the industry, his career, Brimbank and its budding actors. What’s your connection with Brimbank? I teach acting classes in Keilor Park, which is one of the six locations I teach at across Melbourne as part of ATA Acting Studio. A lot of my students come from Brimbank, with Ardeer, Keilor Downs, Keilor Park, Keilor, Kings Park and Taylors Lakes all very well represented in my classes.
You’ve been teaching acting for a number of years – is there anything that stands out as different among your Brimbank students? I’ve been teaching acting for 23 years. What I’ve really noticed about Brimbank is that the cultural diversity makes for a great variety of performers. The actors in Brimbank are all very hard working and also participate in other areas of the performing arts such as singing and dancing. Have you had any past students of note? I’ve had a few students who have gone on to achieve great things in the industry. Toby Wallace, who is playing the lead role in the Romper Stomper series, is one that jumps to mind. I taught Toby when he was a child, through to a teenager. I’m also currently teaching a

What do you like best about the area and what do you think could be done to improve it? Brimbank is a very vibrant and multicultural area, which is something I love. There’s a lot of actors in the area and given the cultural diversity, I’ve been able to teach aspiring actors from a number of different backgrounds. In terms of improvement, I’d love to see more theatres in the area and greater opportunities to pursue creative arts.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets his Greek on at Eleni’s There’s a lot of family history tied up in Yarraville’s new Greek eatery. Locals who know just how long the fit-out of the former Anderson Street boutique took will be gratified to know that a fine space has been carved out here. The place is being managed by Eleftheria (“Thierry”) Amanatidis. At her side around the place is her uncle, Tony. The restaurant is named after Tony’s mother, Eleni Amanatidis. Eleni’s husband is Dimitrios Amanatidis, the father of whom was Antonios Amanatidis, one of the first Greek Orthodox priests to arrive in Australia. So, yes, a lot of family vibes and inner-west Greek traditions going on here. Unsurprisingly, and very happily from our perspective, the food being delivered is old-school, straight-up Greek tucker. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Still, we find some nice ‘n’ lovely twists and tweaks when we partake of a fine dinner as guests of Thierry and her crew. In the serve of super fresh dips ($14), for instance, the melitzanosalata eggplant number tastes not in the least of the garlic and smokiness we are expecting, but instead of zingy mint. Just as good is the tirokafteri of feta, capsicum and the tiniest tingle of chilli. These two are finely abetted by a tzatziki with dill and a very mild-flavoured tarama. The dips are served with very good house-made bread, though we resort to grilled pita to mop up the remainders.
ELENI’S KITCHEN + BAR Address: 28 Anderson Street, Yarraville Phone: 9943 4233 Bennie and I split two mains between the more ritzy grill line-up and the “Eleni’s home favourites” list that includes moussaka and pastitisio. The cabbage rolls ($24) are every bit the home-style classics for which we’ve been hoping. The meat in our lamb gyros plate ($25) is very fine indeed – salty and herby and heaps of it. This meat is also available in pita-wrapped takeaway form for $12. In some ways, though, the top test of both our mains – and a handy gauge of the freshness and general excellence of the food at Eleni’s – comes in the form of the salads. Differing slightly, they are superb – dressed well, juicy and delicious in every way, and displaying no sign at all of even a single tired or brown-edged leaf. The baklava ($8.50) – made by Thierry herself – is a tender take on another Greek classic. Even better is the rizogalo (rice pudding, $8.50). This is some kind of fancy trick – that something so homespun and plain can simultaneously be so suave, smooth and sexy. There’s no doubt in our minds that Eleni’s will be widely regarded as a very welcome arrival to the inner west. (Consider The Sauce dined at Eleni’s as guests of management.)

SPORT Spinner puts the Lions in the box seat Wakeling. Wakeling took a phenomenal 8-52 off 22.4 overs, including nine maidens. He has taken 21 wickets at an average of 15.48 to be the third leading wicket taker in the league. For the record, the other two wickets were taken by Yoshan Kumara and George Sakkas. They were the Lions best bowlers outside of Wakeling, with Kumara taking 1-27 off 13 and Sakkas snaring 1-8 off six. Small run chases can be tricky to negotiate at times, but Taylors Lakes does not appear to be having worries. Sunshine takes top spot By Lance Jenkinson There are two big reasons why Sunshine fans are smiling like Cheshire Cats at work this week. They saw their Crows pounce on top spot with victory in a Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 top-of-the-table blockbuster. And they got to witness their eye-catching Sri Lankan import Asela Aluthge unleash some batting fury. No wonder Crows captain Troy Stone is excited. “We’re top of the ladder now and looking to stay there and play finals,” he said. Sunshine stamped itself as a genuine premiership contender with the 10-run win over Sydenham-Hillside at Hillside Recreation Reserve on Saturday. The Crows posted 7-196 off their maximum 45 overs. Aluthge was scintillating en route to 110 in an innings that included 20 fours. He only needed about 70 balls to bring up the ton – and when he did he got a standing ovation from supporters. Stone marvelled at the crispness of Aluthge’s hitting. “He just came out and bashed the ball around,” Stone said. “I went out there and batted later. I found it pretty hard – it wasn’t an easy deck to bat on. IN THE DOGHOUSE It’s summer sport, which means it is played in the heat ... deal with it. Thank goodness we have moved on from that, or have we? Every year at the tennis, football club pre-season training and the cricket we see images of elite athletes struggling with temperatures more suited to frying eggs. Last week the 40-plus days had one tennis player claiming he was dying on court. Local sport errs on the conservative side in this area and rightly so, especially for juniors. Calls for heat policies to be reviewed and dropped back a few degrees make sense to me. Sport is supposed to be fun.

The amount of people required to get a team on the park is getting out of hand at local level. Football is the worst offender but other sports are quickly catching up, especially for coaching. The days of the captain-coach are gone and even a playing coach is a rare beast these days. We are used to seeing former AFL players having a kick or coaching in the suburban competitions but are we seeing the next step? Former senior AFL coaches have rarely come back to grassroots football, but this year Rodney Eade will be coaching Balwyn in the EFL while Guy McKenna is at the helm at Beaumaris in the ammos. Football clubs tend to follow each other in most aspects so I expect this to be a new trend in the next few years.

It is the last chance saloon for Taylors Lakes to keep its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season alive. The second-last Lions have a chance to build some momentum for the run home when they return to Coburg holding all of the aces on day two at Coburg City Oval this Saturday. Deer Park falls, but redeems itself in thriller rematch

A gallant Deer Park was pipped 81-75 by a more fancied Mentone in the Bowls Victoria premier division at Ballarat Road on Saturday. In a game that had pulses racing up until the last end, it would be the side that produced the best bowls under pressure that would emerge with the spoils. Deer Park is not that side just yet, well not when it comes to blockbuster games against the top-shelf opponents. While they lacked composure in the late stages, the Lions can take a whole lot of positives out of the manner of defeat to an opponent that would have been a premiership chance had it not been stripped of points for fielding an ineligible player early in the season. The Lions showed vast improvement from the side that was walloped by Mentone in their first encounter in round three. “The standard of the game was exceptionally high,” Lions president Neil Cromie said. “To their credit, they played some big shots at
crucial stages, they did it a couple of times in the last couple of ends. “Converting a shot here and there was the difference between a win and a loss. “At the start of the year, we were absolutely belted by Mentone at Mentone, so for us to turn it around to the point where there’s a couple of shots in it with a couple of ends to go, you know you’ve really come a long way within a season.” The Lions wilted in the late game situation which separates the best from the rest. It is a by-product of being a newly promoted side in Victoria’s top-flight bowls competition. Robert Doody’s rink was Deer Park’s only winner, beating David Hoareau 22-20, but the other rinks were “nip and tuck”. David Holt snared a point for the Lions with a 19-all tie with Ashleigh Rowan, while Shane Garvey and Brett Mahoney had losses by less than five shots. “You have days when you play well and
Gift attracts world champ By Lance Jenkinson Keilor Gift organisers have pulled off a coup, with world champion woodchopper Caroline Wassink to compete at the February 10 event at Keilor Recreation Reserve. The 120-metre open Gift is undoubtedly the main event on the card, but the woodchopping has always proven popular. Wassink’s appearance is huge for the Keilor event. The 28-year-old will come fresh from her 2017 underhand world championship title win in the US last year. Wassink, who grew up in Bairnsdale, has regularly featured at big show events in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, but it was her performance in the US that elevated her reputation on the international stage. “It was absolutely mind blowing,” Wassink said. “I honestly didn’t think I’d be going over there and bringing home a world title the first time I went over.” She said the thrill of it all wasn’t just about winning the world title – it was also about inspiring the young up-and-comers in the sport. Wassink, a member of the Australian team, trains hard five times a week on top of her regular job. Much of her travel to events is self-funded, but her passion for the sport and the benefits that come with the competition motivate her to compete whenever and wherever she can. “We travel all over the place, around Australia and overseas as well,” Wassink said. “It’s a good experience, that’s for sure. “Between the people you meet, the competition and seeing the sights as well, it’s the best of both worlds. “It’s a fantastic experience that not everybody gets to have a go at.” Wassink’s woodchopping career appeared in jeopardy at one stage. She learned she had a heart condition called Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome. It put her sports career on hold. Thankfully, the procedure she underwent did not require open-heart surgery, meaning her recovery time was accelerated. Wassink was back woodchopping just seven days later, showing just how passionate she is about the sport. “I actually wasn’t expecting to be coming back so soon,” she said. “The surgeon said to me that because I didn’t have open-heart surgery, it’s a lot easier on the heart to recuperate, so it was back into it seven days later. “It was bloody fantastic to get back into it. “I went back a month later for a check up and everything was fine. 48 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 23, 2018

“I’ve had no problems since and I’ve been firing on all cylinders.” Wassink, who moved to Brisbane last week to live, is looking forward to returning to her home state to perform in front of the Keilor Gift spectators. She is always willing to answer any questions and spread the word about a sport she would like to see in the Olympics one day.
But just don’t get in her way when she is in the heat of battle. “I can guarantee it will be a pretty fiery competition there,” she said. “Everyone gets on fantastic with each other, but when it comes to competition time, that’s where everyone sets their mind to the task. “I think there will be some pretty good competition down there.”

This is another chance for them to show a big gun their potential. “It will be for bragging rights on this side of town and we’d let them know if we won, put it that way,” Cromie said with a chuckle. “Altona is, in a lot of ways, where we’d like to be. “They’ve been there and done it consistently year after year. Cats day out to reign in debt Albion is working hard to ensure it does not get left behind the other Western Region Football League division 1 clubs. Relatively smaller clubs such as Albion can struggle financially at times, but the Cats are up for the fight. The Cats will hold a debt demolition day on February 3, which they hope will go some way to erasing outstanding debts and allow them to maintain competitiveness in the top tier. For Albion vice-president Maty Bettin, the cause is close to his heart. Not only is he a board member, he is also a former junior at the club, learning the basics from the age of five before going on to have a glittering junior career and following an elite pathway. “I went on to captain the Western Jets, played Geelong reserves for a year and then I went back to Williamstown and back to Albion,” Bettin said. “To me, it’s where I’ve been brought up and it’s a family club. “I don’t want to see it going backwards and that’s why I’ve put my hand up this year to be the vice-president, have some input and hopefully make some change for the long term. “There’s a lot of people that want to have their say, but not too many people want to actually put in the hard yards and make a difference. “We need to get as many people to the debt demolition day as possible.” Albion will have former Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell as its guest speaker at the debt demolition day. Maxwell will talk about his rise from the rookie list to premiership captain of the Magpies, as well as his transition into business after his football career. The Cats will charge $50 entry to the event which will include a local band to play, live and silent auctions, raffles and games. “Hopefully, we can get all of our past players to get along and make it a good day,” Bettin said. Albion will be led by player-coach Chris O’Keefe again in 2018. The Cats have appointed Lloyd Balshaw as their new reserves coach. “Lloyd’s experience was what we were looking for in a reserves coach,” Bettin said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids coming through our junior ranks … they need that hardness and discipline that Lloyd will bring.” Lance Jenkinson
