Square deal for centre By Esther Lauaki A $45 million expansion of Caroline Springs’ shopping hub is set to breathe new life into the centre of town by next year. Melton council approved a proposed 6500 square metre development of CS Square which will include the addition of a Woolworths supermarket, large format discount store, car wash, more than 10 specialty stores and a new parents’ room. CS Square has served the main shopping centre for the municipality’s east since 2004 and presently has 60 stores.

Construction is due to begin this month on the development which will introduce another 15 retailers to the mix. Centre manager Rod Kennedy said the expansion would enhance the centre’s existing grocery offer, along with a range of specialty stores and services to the local community.

Mr Kennedy said he hoped to see the expansion completed by early 2019. Better pedestrian access near Aldi and additional carparking spaces on the vacant land north of CS Square are also planned. Upgrade works to a section of Hampshire Road Sunshine opposite the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre and the south side of Service Street to Dawson St, will soon begin. The works are scheduled for completion mid-2018. The improvements include additional seating, raised pedestrian crossings and improvements to lighting and pedestrian access. Sunshine North’s hot property By Tate Papworth A record sale price for a residential property in Sunshine North capped off a bumper year of real estate growth in the west. And Brimbank’s prospects for the year ahead continue to look good, according to local real estate agents. A four-bedroom, four-bathroom brick house, at 11 Oxford Street, sold for $1.38 million on December 20, breaking the suburb’s record sale price. The sale eclipsed the previous record of $1.205 million for Sunshine North, which was set by a four-bedroom house on Rice Flower Road last May.
Douglas Kay Real Estate agent Anthony Caccamo said the strong performance was a sign of things to come for the west. “I think there’s a realisation that the time has come for the west,” Mr Caccamo said. “The sale at Oxford Street was significant for a residential property and is part of a wave effect.” The property market has been tipped to slow this year, but Mr Caccamo said he didn’t expect that to be the case in the west. “It might hold steady for a while, but there are enough results to show that the market isn’t slowing down,” he said. “We had a handful of sales exceed $1 million last year and at this stage the demand outweighs supply.”
Mr Caccamo said recent investments in infrastructure in Brimbank has helped promote strong market growth. “There’s been a flow-on effect from many of the upgrades around the area,” he said. “The new library and civic centre in Sunshine and the upgraded Sunshine station are prime examples of that.” Further upgrades, including a rail link between Melbourne Airport and the city, with a stop in Sunshine, are slated for the coming years. Mr Caccamo said Brimbank, with a close proximity to the Melbourne CBD, had started to shake the stigma attached to its name and was becoming an attractive area to buy in.
“I think the area is certainly starting to shake that stigma,” he said. “I’ve been a native of the area my entire life and have always known it’s nothing like what you see portrayed. And I think buyers are starting to see that, too.” Barry Plant real estate agent Phillip Nhu echoed Mr Caccamo’s sentiments, saying Sunshine is leading the way for growth in the west. “Sunshine is certainly one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the west,” he said. “Ardeer has also performed fairly strongly in recent times. January is always a bit of a slower time in the market, but I’d expect things to start rolling again come February.”

No spark for park after cafe closure The closure of Brimbank Park’s cafe has been met with widespread disappointment. The Brownstone Cafe closed its doors late last year, leaving the iconic park without a food or drink outlet. Resident Virginia Tachos, who is also one of the area’s elected councillors, said the news has upset the community. “Residents and visitors are devastated because this cafe breathed new life into Brimbank Park and made it a lovely destination for locals and visitors to enjoy,” she said. “This park has no public transport access and now
has no cafe. How is this acceptable in the west for a landmark tourist destination?” Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice echoed Cr Tachos’ sentiments. “A cafe within the visitor centre adds an additional attraction to Brimbank Park patrons,” Cr Giudice said. “Ongoing investment by Parks Victoria into Brimbank Park is important to provide appropriate facilities and services, as well as maximise visitor access.” Star Weekly understands the cafe tenants opted not to renew their lease.
Parks Victoria Keilor Plains area chief ranger David Collins said the cafe closure was disappointing, but remained positive a new tenant will soon be found. “The cafe is an important part of the visitor service offer at Brimbank Park,” he said. “Parks Victoria is committed to ensuring a new tenant is secured … as soon as possible. “In the meantime, we will initiate short term agreements for mobile vendors to provide food and beverage services.”
Brimbank residents are urged to check their home’s eligibility for the NBN with fixed line services in some suburbs due to be disconnected in the coming months. Most Australian homes with a fixed line connection, which includes HFC, FTTB, FTTN and FTTP, will have an 18-month migration window. This means that from the date their house is eligible for NBN broadband access, residents will have 18 months until their old phone line is switched off. However, the length of the migration window can differ depending on which retailer is contracted to provide the service. Selected areas of Keilor Park, St Albans, Delahey, Tullamarine and Burnside Heights are nearing the end of their migration window. NBN Co public affairs manager James Kaufman encouraged residents to continually monitor the NBN website to avoid service disruptions. “The cut-off date for legacy phone services is not uniform across the western suburbs of Melbourne; it is aligned to the date the home becomes ready for service,” Mr Kaufman said. “Once the home is ready for service on the NBN access network most homes will have an 18-month migration period to transition. “We encourage readers to check their address and register for updates on the NBN website for more information.” Tate Papworth

Meal deals for just $3 An Altona North cafe that offers $3 meals is expanding its operation to Sunshine. UrCommunity was founded by husband-and-wife team Paula Hall and Peter Malliaros four years ago to provide affordable meal options to those in need. “We’re about helping the community with food security,” Mr Malliaros said. “This is about human rights and we believe this is a key strategy in helping the one million Australians going to bed hungry every night.” Mr Malliaros said the Sunshine move followed the success of the Altona North cafe. “We’re now moving to a management model which means we’ll be able to open up more of these sites,” he said. “We want to be able to open one in every council area across Australia.”
While the venture has proven to be a success, Mr Malliaros said it hadn’t been without its challenges, including a slow start. “Word eventually spread and in the past six months we’ve served 32,000 meals to the community,” he said. Ms Hall said the decision to set up in Sunshine West made sense. “I grew up in Sunshine West and I know some of the challenges in the area,” she said. “This is our answer to capsicum costing $3.” The cafe, which will be on Somerville Road, will offer eat-in and take-away meals and will be running by the end of January. Three men have been charged after an alleged armed robbery in Sunshine West last year. In December police executed a search warrant in Warmington Street where an 18-year-old Brookfield man and a 29-year-old Altona Meadows man were arrested. Both were charged with armed robbery and other offences and were remanded. Last week detectives arrested a third man, a 22-year-old from Essendon.
Van stolen
A driver was injured after his van was stolen in Sunshine North last week. The courier was sorting through parcels in the back of the van on Toon Crescent, when a man approached about 10.50am on Wednesday, January 3. The man broke into the van and drove it away, and the courier fell on the road. The van was later found on Oxford Street, Sunshine North with a number of parcels missing. ‘Heartless’ driver hunted By Tate Papworth Police are still hunting for the driver of a dark-coloured utility that struck a 29-year-old nurse and drove off. Shanne Doktor-Naron, a nurse at Sunshine Hospital, had finished her shift and was crossing Furlong Road in North Sunshine about 9.50pm last Monday when she was struck. She was transferred by ambulance to the major trauma centre at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition where she was treated for a broken arm. Ms Doktor-Naron’s husband Justin Naron told media his wife saw the car coming. “The guy was revving hard, she saw him coming and stepped back a little, but still got hit,” he said. “I’m mad, how could a heartless person do this to her? She is very kind, caring. I don’t know why people like that exist.” Western Health acting executive director of operations Damian Gibney said the incident has left staff saddened. “Shanne is a well-liked and respected member of the nursing team at Sunshine Hospital, and we’re saddened by what she and her family are going through,” Mr Gibney said. Victoria Police Senior Constable Debra McFarlane labelled the incident “cowardly” and urged witnesses to come forward. “It [the car] should have received quite an amount of damage to the left front passenger-side panel,” Senior Constable McFarlane said. “We’ve got units out looking around for the vehicle, we’re trying to obtain as much CCTV footage as we can. “This is a cowardly act, and we’re appealing for any witnesses that know anything about it to please contact CrimeStoppers,” she said.

Illegal tobacco ring ‘smashed’ Two people have been charged after police recovered more than $1 million in cash, two luxury cars and a stash of illegal tobacco after raiding a property in Sunshine North earlier this month. A search warrant was executed at a residential address on Taniyha Place on Thursday, January 4 by Broadmeadows police. The warrant was carried out alongside the Criminal Proceeds Squad, with Australian Border Force also supporting the operation. It formed part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged importation and possession of illegal tobacco. A second warrant was also executed at a business premises in Broadmeadows. As part of the search, police seized more than 650,000 cigarettes at a value of more than $500,000 in addition to loose tobacco, $1 million in cash and two luxury cars, which are believed to be valued at $200,000. Victoria Police said the successful execution of the warrants smashed the illegal tobacco syndicate. A 41-year-old Sunshine North man and 39-year-old Sunshine North woman were at the house at the time and were arrested at the scene. Both have been charged with knowingly deal with proceeds of crime.

Perfect end to year 12 The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre today released round one of tertiary course offers for 2018. For many recent year 12 graduates across the state, it marks the end of a nervous wait. But for Keilor Downs College student Taahira Radjudin it’s reward for hard work. Ms Radjudin was one of Brimbank’s highest achievers last year, highlighted by a perfect study score of 50 in her sociology unit. She was the only state school year 12 student in the western suburbs to achieve a perfect score in the subject, making the achievement even more significant. While she said she expected to do well, Ms Radjudin said the perfect score came as a surprise. “I put a lot of hard work in and expected something in the high 40s, but to see 50 was a bit of a shock,” she said. “My teacher offered some after school classes, so I took full advantage of them, but I also did lots of practice essays and spent a lot of time memorising things.” As year 12 captain of the college, Ms Radjudin led by example, achieving an ATAR in the 90s, however she wasn’t the only success story the school produced. New data released by Ambulance Victoria reveals that paramedics attended 1696 call-outs related to children trapped inside vehicles for the year ending August 31, 2017. In Brimbank, Sunshine North (14 call-outs), Keilor Downs (14) and Taylors Hill (eight) were the hotspots for incidents. In Victoria, it is against the law to leave children alone in a vehicle, with offenders facing fines of up to $3900 and a six-month jail sentence. Minister for families and children Jenny Mikakos said the consequence for breaking the law can be fatal. “Hot summer days can kill, and even on a milder day in the mid-20s, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can easily get to 20 to 30 degrees hotter than outside,” Ms Mikakos said. Pet owners have also been urged to exercise vigilance. RSPCA Victoria head of prevention, Sophie Buchanan, said animals should never be left in hot cars, even for a short period of time. “If anyone does find a pet locked in a vehicle, it is essential they immediately call Victoria Police on triple-0,” Ms Buchanan said. “Police on duty around the state can respond to an emergency call rapidly and as animals can suffer heat exhaustion and die in just six minutes, time is of the essence.” Tate Papworth

MY BRIMBANK What’s your connection to Brimbank? I’m a son of Sunshine. I grew up there and still live there with my wife and four children. When someone asks me where my fondest memories are, I always say Brimbank. I’m really proud of it. What do you like best about the area? The migrant flavour of the place is something that really stands out. There’s some terrific examples of successful immigration projects in the west. I also think under the administrators Jane Nathan and (John) Watson, the council has been able to focus on community building rather than politics and under John Hedditch last year, we were able to return to democracy and continue that work. You’ve had a long association with cricket in Brimbank and now on a national scale. How did you come to love the game? My involvement in sport helped me integrate into the broader community. My parents were migrants. My father didn’t really know the language or the sport of cricket, but all the members of the club embraced our whole family and really nurtured our introduction to the community and the sport. Brimbank has a high rate of new arrivals. What role do you think cricket can play in this community? I think cricket clubs are in a powerful position because we’re established. For me it’s really about rolling out the welcome carpet just like I was as a child. It’s on us to continue that legacy. I know that at my club, Sunshine West, this is something we’ve done successfully for
a very long time and the club is better off for it. We’ve got people of all different walks of life working together, establishing friendships and improving their cricket skills. The club is a really vibrant place to be.

Women’s cricket is growing rapidly. What is being done to help cater for females wanting to play the game locally? The girls probably aren’t being catered for as well as the boys are, so we’ve got a bit of catching up to do. There’s a couple of things we can do to help. One has already been done at the elite level, so now we have role models young girls can look up to. But at a local level, clubs can offer programs and opportunities for girls to engage in. Associations can also play a role in establishing opportunities for more females to be able to play. How would you rate the health of club cricket in Brimbank? The game holds its own. It ebbs and flows, but overall I’d say it’s pretty healthy. Each week I drive around there’s lots of matches under way on pristine grounds. The quality of a lot of the grounds in the area has improved greatly. We’ve (still) got challenges. What do you think the biggest challenges facing the game are? There’s four major challenges as I see it. The first is nurturing and retaining volunteers. The second is upgrading facilities – people are more discerning these days and expect more. Thirdly, we need to engage with multicultural groups and expand our reach. And finally we need to cater to millennials.

It’s been a scorching start to 2018, and I hope that residents have found a way to keep cool, hydrated, and safe under our extreme weather conditions.
Our first event back for 2018 is our Australia Day celebration on Friday 26 January
Summer presents many hazards, not least of which is snakes emerging from hibernation. It gives me great pleasure to remind residents that Council offers a free snake removal program, an initiative I put forward in 2016. If you spot a snake anywhere within the City of Melton, it’s important to leave it alone, call Council on 9747 7200 immediately, and we will arrange for it to be removed by a professional at no cost.
(Willows Historical Park, Melton), a highlight of which will be the citizenship ceremony, where over 170 people will be sworn in as new citizens. I look forward to congratulating and welcoming them to our community. Celebrations will also feature live entertainment, great food and activities for the kids. I’m also looking forward to meeting our Community Achievement Award winners, including the 2018 Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year. These awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise the outstanding contribution that volunteers make to our community, and I for one am grateful for the time and effort they put into making the City of Melton welcoming for all. Stage 1 of the Hume Drive Duplication project is expected to begin in late January, after Council awarded the construction contract to ACE Infrastructure P/L. This is a thrilling outcome for residents, with planned upgrades set to significantly improve road safety and cater for increased traffic in the area. The $4.46 million project will see Hume Drive expanded from two to four lanes, between Calder Park Drive, Taylors Hill and Copperfield Drive, Delahey; traffic signals installed at the intersection of Hume Drive and Overton Lea Boulevard, and upgrades to roundabouts and landscaping. Construction is expected to be completed by end of August 2018. I’d also like to say how thrilled I am that Council endorsed recommendations to install female friendly change amenities across a number of our recreation facilities, including Hillside Recreation Reserve and Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve. It’s fantastic to see local clubs encouraging female participation in sport, particularly AFL and cricket, and I’d like to congratulate all the women making positive changes for a healthier lifestyle. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir experiences some dumpling delight Putting aside my gentle ribbing about the “Scottish ancestry” of Hopkins Street’s new dumpling purveyor, it turns out there is method in their method. MC Dumpling, you see, stands for My Chinese Dumpling. But more than that, this place does embrace a fast-food look and process. And that, as in this case, can be good. What it means here is bright, clean surrounds; brisk service with a smile; and freshly prepared and very affordable food. But it is the dumplings that are definitely the go here. The steamed pork and chive numbers, for instance, are fabulous at $9 for 16. Fresh-as, not too big, kinda dainty, juicy/ succulent – even if there was little by way of discernible chive vibe. Ditto with the lamb and leek dumplings – same number, same price, same good impression. We fare slightly less impressively with the sides. These chicken ribs normally cost $3, but are being presented to customers free with any order as an opening celebration. We don’t know how long that’ll be the case! They’re well fried and ungreasy – but tasteless. Or rather, taste not of chicken. Actually, ALL the sides cost $3 – including the corn fritters. They’re a variation on the more familiar

SPORT Battle ahead for Eagles A severely depleted Sunshine Eagles will return to the field for the first time in the new year against Sandringham Royals in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 away on Sunday. The Eagles will be missing 11 players who will serve a one-game penalty handed down by the judiciary stemming from an on-field incident in December. Eagles player-coach Jared Van Hoon was perplexed by the blanket suspensions and the club decided to appeal the decision, but it was unsuccessful and they will now serve the suspension against the Royals this weekend. “We were on defence and two players had a little bit of a skirmish, they were just being competitive and playing hard. Us as teams restrained our own guys so as not to let the situation escalate and finish the game,” Van Hoon said. “In turn, we’re all being punished for that, it’s hard being specific about what we’re being punished for, but it is what it is. “We’ve accepted it, we’ve moved on and we’ve put together a line-up that we feel is going to give us a good chance to win.”

Sunshine will at least have a quality starting pitcher on the mound in Griffin Weir to test the Royals line-up. Weir was not suspended and he will be called on for a big effort on the mound. “He was the one guy that wasn’t reported and he’s been our mid-week pitcher, so he’s going to go as long as he can,” Van Hoon said. “I’ve got no doubt he’ll be effective, as long as we can carry the team a bit with our at bats and we’ll be just fine.” Sunshine will get the chance to give some fringe players and developing youngsters the full division 1 experience. The Eagles will also find out how good their depth is.
“This is going to be a chance for them to leave everything out on the field,” Van Hoon said. “I told them, there’s no pressure, just have fun and go out and play the game. “It will be good for some guys, especially the younger kids that are going to be up in the ones in a year or so, to get some experience.” Sunshine will go into the second half of the season in second place in its conference. It was a largely positive pre-Christmas showing from the Eagles, but Van Hoon was still left wanting more. “I know there’s going to be some teams that want to beat us and I think we’ll use that in our favour in terms of working hard and playing our brand of ball and hopefully finding ourselves in the play-offs at the end,” Van Hoon said With just four games separating top to bottom, the finals race is wide open. Van Hoon said Sunshine could not afford to get too far ahead of itself. “Every team in this league, east and west, we’re all pretty on par with each other,” he said. “It makes for a very competitive division and game play. “You can’t really afford to take a team lightly and you know every game is going to be a battle.”
Extreme heat ends all-star hopes A proud moment for the Sunshine Eagles was imminent. It promised to be a career highlight for the Eagles’ fab five of playing coach Jared Van Hoon, Adam Irons, Jamie Young, Jeremy Young and Tayler Rowe – selected in the Western Monarchs all-star team. Then came the dreaded weather forecast, with temperatures tipped to hit the 40s – extreme enough heat for Baseball Victoria to cancel the east versus west all-star outing. That left the Eagles’ representatives and the rest of the team shattered. “The fact that it wasn’t played and it’s not going to be played is really a downer,” Van Hoon said. “I was trying to fight to get it re-scheduled and work with Baseball Victoria in terms of what we can do to make it happen, because I wanted our club, along with all the other clubs, to be represented. “I know a lot of guys worked really hard to make the team and a lot of guys may not make another all-star game. “The fact we couldn’t get the game in was pretty disappointing, but I know they’re trying to work on a better planning scenario for next season.” Even though the game was cancelled, Sunshine should reflect fondly on what led to more than a third of the Monarchs’ playing roster and all of the Monarchs’ coaching staff – including head coach Van Hoon and assistant coaches Gavin Young, Marc McKenner and Stewart Clayton – being granted all-star honours. It was recognition of what the Eagles had achieved before the break, topping the ladder most weeks before settling into second spot by Christmas. “Having all those ’Shiners in the line up and on the coaching staff, it speaks to the work we put in for the first half of the season,” Van Hoon said. “The club deserved to be recognised because it is one heck of a club.” Lance Jenkinson

Tudor is well known in golf circles in Melbourne and especially Werribee where he won the club championship twice and the Werribee Open once before hitting the professional tour. His father Des, a premiership coach at the Werribee Football Club, is a Werribee Park member and is a constant winner in the weekly competitions. Kerr cancels on Saints

By Lance Jenkinson St Albans is preparing for life without star signing Daniel Kerr in the Western Region Football League division 1 this season. The Saints’ big off season recruit has informed the Saints that work commitments will prevent him from joining the club. Kerr, a silky midfielder who won a premiership and All Australian honours in his time with the West Coast Eagles in the AFL, was the talk of the town when he signed with the Saints in October. But Kerr has recently changed jobs, meaning he will no longer be in a position to travel east to Melbourne for Saints games. St Albans player-coach Brad Murphy is disappointed, but has a work-comes-first policy for all of his players. “When we first signed him, he was working a regular week and then he got made redundant from that job so it changed,” Murphy said. “He’s been applying for new jobs and he got one, but I believe one of the conditions was that he doesn’t fly to Melbourne every week – so we’re a victim of circumstance I suppose.” Kerr was enthusiastic about playing with St Albans when he signed on the dotted line. The 34-year-old even flew to Melbourne recently and spent a weekend with the Saints, including a catch-up with Murphy to discuss plans for the season. “I spent two days with him and he seems like a terrific human being,” Murphy said. “He’s changed his ways and he’s a family man now. “He had a job lined up that was going to be fine with flying down to Melbourne every week to play, but that circumstance changed when he got back to Perth. “We said to him, when he rang us to tell us, that work takes priority all the time – it’s your

livelihood and footy is a game at the end of the day, but he’s shattered that he’s not going to be playing for us.” From a list management point of view, it will give St Albans a little more wriggle room to sign players within the points and salary cap. Murphy’s top priority is bringing in more top-shelf midfielders, searching far and wide for them. Kerr is even helping the Saints in their attempt to lure a big name from WA, possibly
through his West Coast Eagles links, with talks ongoing, while Murphy has his eyes on a number of talented locals. “It’s good that Daniel he hasn’t just ditched us, he’s given us a number of contacts and he’s trying to help us replace him basically,” Murphy said. “On field, Daniel was going to be a really good player, but we’ll be able to replace him. “Even taking out Daniel, our list is still really strong – we’re in a really good space.”

Rain caused havoc at cricket venues across the west on Saturday with most games failing to see out the day. Taylors Lakes had made a promising start to its clash with Hoppers Crossing in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Lionheart Reserve before a downfall brought a sudden end to play. The Lions were coasting at 1-84 off 21.5 overs, with Dilan Chandima posting 51 not out and skipper Michael Brne adding 29. Just like all sub-district matches, Taylors Lakes and Hoppers Crossing had to settle for a share of the points. In the Victorian Turf Cricket Association, day one of two-day games were halted across the league. Only 10 overs were played between Sydenham-Hillside and Sunshine in north A1. Sunshine made 1-27 before scampering to the dressing room. In north west division, Simon Lambert managed to compile 37 not out as St Albans made 2-50 against West Coburg at Morris Reserve. The early finish was a pain for Grand United, which had Gellibrand on the ropes at 4-18. There would have been no complaints about an early stoppage from Sunshine Heights, which was in trouble on 6-37 in its north-west B1 clash with Williamstown CYMS at Ainsworth Reserve. The second day’s play in the VTCA will be on Saturday.
