New year’s first arrival As revellers around the country welcomed in a new year, maternity ward staff at Sunshine Hospital were preparing to welcome a different kind of new arrival. Sotiria Vatalis was born at 1.09 am on January 1. Weighing 3310 grams, Sotiria was the hospital’s first delivery for 2018. Last year was busy for maternity staff, with the hospital recording a record number of births (536) for a single month in October. Sunshine Hospital operations manager maternity Lisa Smith said the trend was expected to continue. “Sunshine Hospital has seen an increase in births in the past 12 months,” Ms Smith said. “At this stage, the predicted birth rate for 2017-18 is 5758 – a six per cent increase from the previous year.” There were 5579 babies born at the hospital in 2017, an increase on the 5482 recorded in 2016. While the increased numbers have put pressure on staff, relief is in sight. “Significant work is being undertaken in preparation for the move to the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital in 2019,” Ms Smith said. Brimbank’s night of terror By Tate Papworth Police are continuing to hunt a large group of African men following a violent crime spree which included two assaults, home invasions, a police pursuit and robbery last Thursday night. The first incident occurred about 9.30pm when a car pulled up beside a 17-year-old boy walking along Argyle Way in Taylors Hill. A male got out of the vehicle and struck the boy to the back of his legs with what is believed to be a baseball bat. The victim ran before a second male offender got out of the car. The boy was chased by both men, pushed to the ground and assaulted before the offenders fled in a waiting vehicle. A short time later four males smashed
through the glass door of a house on Caledonian Crescent in Hillside. The 59-year-old female occupant was forced into the front room of the property and was slapped across the face, leaving her with cuts and bruises. A further 10 males then entered the premises and began ransacking the house. A number of electrical items and car keys were stolen before all offenders left. Victoria Police Commander Russell Barrett described the incident as horrendous. “This is incredibly concerning, abhorrent, thuggish behaviour by people who have no apparent care for the rights and wellbeing of fellow citizens,” Commander Barrett said. Less than an hour later, at 12.15am, a
16-year-old boy walking near the area of Noble Banks Drive in Cairnlea was knocked to the ground by three or four males who then kicked and punched him before taking his phone. Just after 12.30am four occupants of a house on Coleridge Drive in Delahey heard a large crack as a window beside their door was smashed. Three males forced entry via the garage and entered the house, however the occupants managed to arm themselves and the offenders fled after taking a mobile phone. A short time later police detected a stolen car believed to be involved in the incidents on St Albans Road. Commander Barrett said police attempted to intercept the vehicle on Ballarat Road in
Sunshine before initiating a pursuit. “Police engaged in a pursuit, which continued until the stolen car crashed a short time later,” he said. “This was followed by a foot pursuit where the offenders managed to evade police.” The string of incidents come amid heightened concerns surrounding youth gang crime, however Commander Barrett said police were determined to put an end to such behaviour. “We take this type of behaviour very seriously,” he said. “We have a dedicated task force out in the western suburbs and they have the support of the anti-gang squad who are currently working with them. Enforcement takes a happy toll By Tate Papworth Brimbank Highway Patrol members have credited increased enforcement for pleasing results on the road during the festive season. At the beginning of December, police launched Operation Bikestrike in an effort to combat high numbers of serious injury collisions involving motorcycles within Brimbank. Brimbank Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Trent Hewet said the increased enforcement produced pleasing results during its first
month. As the operation is ongoing, official figures are yet to be made public. “We’ve been running Operation Bikestrike since December 1 and it’s been successful in causing a reduction of serious injury collisions involving motorcycles within the Brimbank patrol area,” he said. “Both overt and covert patrols have been enhanced in attempt to drive the ‘Road to zero’ message. “The results have been pleasing to date, however the operation will run through until May.”

While the number of serious collisions was down, Acting Sergeant Hewet said road users needed to remain vigilant as traffic began to build with people returning to work. “A lack of concentration or forward planning when driving could very quickly reverse the pleasing results achieved to date,” he said.
Operation Bikestrike is running parallel with Operation Summer, which aims to remove drink and drug drivers from the road. Acting Sergeant Hewet said the operation had served an important purpose. “Statewide, the main causes of fatalities and serious injury collisions are drink and drug driving and excessive speed,” he said. “These issues both play a large role in causing serious collisions locally, so we’ve partnered with the TAC to remove impaired drivers from our roads. We’ll continue to be out enforcing in large numbers as summer heats up.”

Ballkid duty nets a whole lot of fun Three Brimbank juniors will be an integral part of one of world tennis’ biggest events. The teenagers – siblings Olivia and Aristidis Bosidis from Hillside and Olivia Causovski from Taylors Lakes – have been selected as ballkids for the Australian Open, which starts on January 15. They are part of a squad of 350 chosen from a field of more than 2500 applicants. After completing a rigorous five-stage try-out period that began in March last year, Olivia Bosidis said she was eager for the main event to begin.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity,” she said. “I watch a lot of tennis … it’s really exciting to think that I could ballkid for them.” Ms Bosidis is no stranger to the big stage, with 2018 marking her fourth stint as a ballkid at the open. “Given my age, this will be the final time I get to be a ballkid, so I’m looking to go out on a high,” she said. “Each year, the best ballkid is selected by a panel of judges and they get to go over to France and ballkid the French Open, which is something I’d love to do.
“I’d really love to ballkid for Roger Federer or Maria Sharapova, who are my favourite players on each side of the draw.” Ms Bosidis’ ballkid career isn’t short on highlights. “I’ve been pretty lucky,” she said. “I was able to ballkid in a match with Stan Wawrinka a little while back. And once, when I was getting ready to go out on court, I turned to my left and Rafael Nadal was standing right next to me, which was quite surreal.” Tate Papworth

RSPCA Victoria is praising dog owners for their handling of pets during New Year’s Eve fireworks. In total, 56 stray dogs were brought into RSPCA Victoria animal care centres between New Year’s Eve and Tuesday, January 2, less than half the number of animals received by shelters in the same period the year before. RSPCA Victoria chief executive Liz Walker said it was pleasing that pet owners appeared to be heeding advice on how to care for their animals amid stressful situations such as fireworks. “Animals and fireworks simply do not mix,” Dr Walker said. “We all love to celebrate the beginning of a new year, but fireworks, particularly illegal displays, cause distress in many animals, including dogs, cats and horses. “Our pets are part of the family, so it’s encouraging to see owners taking extra precautions to ensure their dogs are safely contained at this time of year.” The positive trend around Victoria was reflected in Brimbank, with the council receiving just two calls for lost dogs after New Year’s Eve celebrations. Both dogs were found safe and were reunited with their owners. While the danger period is over, Dr Walker said those who were still seeking lost pets should continue to search their local shelters. “We have stray dogs being brought into RSPCA Victoria shelters for up to a week into the new year, so we encourage anyone who has lost their pet to keep checking their local council pounds, animal shelters and veterinary clinics,” she said. Councils pound out new plan By Tate Papworth Six western suburbs councils are exploring the possibility of establishing a western regional animal pound. Melton, Brimbank Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley city council’s are currently conducting a feasibility study to determine whether such a pound is viable. Brimbank city development acting director Kristen Gilbert said Brimbank had partnered with neighbouring councils in an effort to deal with animal management.
“Council has been involved with other neighbouring councils in exploring the possibility of a regional pound facility to service the growth area of the west,” she said. “This is still in the early stages of investigation.” The study is being spearheaded by Wyndham, which had almost 150 dog attacks reported for the 2016-17 financial year. In Brimbank, there was a 64 per cent spike in the number of reported dog attacks in the same period – 163, up from 99.
In Melton, planning and development general manager Luke Shannon said 18 cases were expected to go to court. “Melton City council takes a zero tolerance approach to dog attacks,” he said. “Each dog attack reported to council is thoroughly investigated. “In 2017, 18 dog attack matters were deemed serious enough to be lodged in the Magistrates’ Court. “A further 18 are expected to be prepared and lodged.” At its December meeting, Melton
council revealed its animal management plan. The plan, which is updated every four years, includes a goal of increasing public awareness as to what constitutes a dog attack and to encourage the reporting of such incidents. It also places high priority on decreasing the time taken by community members to report dog attacks. As of June last year, there were 13 declared dangerous dogs, 20 declared menacing dogs and 10 restricted-breed dogs registered in Melton.
Memorial to our fallen A memorial that pays homage to Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War has been unveiled at Sunshine’s Kevin Wheelahan Gardens. The project, predominately organised by the Vietnamese Community Association in partnership with Brimbank council, pays respect to the memory and sacrifices made by the 521 Australians who lost their lives during the conflict. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said that the council was honoured to unveil the Vietnam War memorial almost a year to the day after the first sod was turned. “This is a significant project and is an expression of gratitude to the Vietnamese people involved in the war, and the Vietnamese community who now reside in Australia – a large number of whom have chosen to call Brimbank home,” Cr Giudice said. The gardens are already home to an avenue
planting that honours the veterans from the Sunshine District who served in World War I. Cr Giudice said the addition of a Vietnam War memorial added another layer of remembrance and provided further synergy with nearby Sunshine RSL. “The beautiful Kevin Wheelahan Gardens and memorial will serve our community as a place of remembrance and reflection,” she said. “The people of Brimbank can spend time honouring loved ones and understand the sacrifices made by our brave fallen soldiers.” Sunshine RSL president Gary Collins said the memorial is a fitting tribute. “It looks fantastic and is a great add-on to the RSL,” Mr Collins said. “The memorial was completely funded by donations and spearheaded by the Vietnamese people, which adds further significance to it.” Tate Papworth

Road relief in Delahey By Tate Papworth Upgrade work on the Kings and Taylors road intersection in Delahey is almost complete. The roundabout at the intersection has been removed and replaced with traffic lights. A raised intersection to slow traffic has also been installed. VicRoads metro north-west operations director Fatima Mohamed said the upgrade would boost traffic flow and reduce travel time, particularly in morning and afternoon peaks. “These changes will … make the intersection safer and, importantly, allow drivers to get where they need to go on time,” she said. “Tens of thousands of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists use the Kings and Taylors road intersection every day, with residents finally getting this long-awaited upgrade.” The upgrade also features new bicycle lanes, a new pedestrian crossing and upgraded footpaths designed to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The upgrade is scheduled for completion early this year, subject to weather conditions. Meanwhile, the next stage of work on Hampshire Road, Sunshine, is set to begin. Upgrades to the east side of Hampshire Road, from the Man lifting cow statue to Service Street, and along the south side of Service Street to Dawson Street, will begin in the coming weeks. Access to shops will be maintained throughout regular business hours, but some sections of footpath will be temporarily closed and there will be some overnight road closures along Hampshire Road. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the upgrades would significantly enhance the area. “Council is excited to move forward with the next stage of improvements to transform

the ‘heart’ of Sunshine into an attractive, well-planned space that is easy to negotiate,” Cr Giudice said. “This stage will focus around the Service Street intersection – including integrating the much-loved Man lifting cow statue into the new civic space.

A happy trail for Brimbank Brimbank council has been named as the best newcomer to the national Garage Sale Trail program. The Garage Sale Trail, which has been running for seven years, is Australia’s largest re-use, waste education and community event. A 50-year-old Keilor Downs man has been found alive after spending five days lost in the Grampians National Park. Julio Ascui chewed on eucalyptus leaves and drank water from a stream after becoming lost on a trek. He was found by Parks Victoria staff sitting next to a creek. He was treated for cuts and bruises at the nearby Stawell Hospital.

Melton councillors are considering returning a Caroline Springs fountain to full operation, despite a recommendation it remain inactive. The Springlake fountain was installed at the estate by land developer Delfin in 1999 as a marketing tool. When Delfin’s obligations at the estate concluded in 2013, Melbourne Water elected not to continue operating the fountain. The fountain has remained inactive since and is not considered to be in working order. A report authored by operations manager Les Stokes exploring three options for the fountain was presented to the council at last month’s meeting. The report explored the possibility of returning the fountain to full
operation, replacing it with a smaller one and leaving it turned off. Mr Stokes said the fountain served no purpose to improve water quality and, given the significant cost associated with resuming operations, recommended it remain inactive. But Cr Kathy Majdlik put forward a motion that recommissioning the fountain to full operation be referred to the 2018-19 budget discussion. The motion was carried. It is estimated returning the fountain to its original state would cost about $44,000 and running and servicing it would cost $23,000 a year. Tate Papworth
An unoccupied vehicle parked on Killara Street, Sunshine West, was struck by a white flat-bed truck about 11.30pm on Saturday, December 23. The driver of the truck, which is likely to have sustained extensive damage, drove off without exchanging details with the owner of the other vehicle. Caroline Springs man charged
A 22-year-old Caroline Springs man has been arrested by detectives from the Brimbank Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team for allegedly exposing himself to two women in November last year. The man has been charged with three counts of sexual activity directed at another person and two counts of sexual exposure. He was bailed to appear at Sunshine Magistrate’s Court in March. Despite massive State Government budget cuts, the Western General Hospital is still managing to operate all of its medical services. However this may not be the case at the end of the current financial year in June, if State and Federal Governments do not revise their attitude to hospital grants. All public hospitals have been told to cut spending to a minimum because of a government decision to stem cash flows to hospitals.
The incineration of a mother and her two children in St Albans has led to a plea from western suburbs community police to people under severe stress to call for help before it’s too late. The mother and children died after being doused with petrol and set alight on 2 January after a domestic upheaval. Community police at Altona North say many families are now coping with one of the most stressful periods of the year.

What do you consider to be the biggest issues facing the western suburbs, and what will you do to address those issues if elected? Like every part of Melbourne, I think the west is suffering from a crime wave that is being ignored by the state government. Crime is up more than 20 per cent since Daniel Andrews came to power, and he’s put out a lot of press releases, but has done not much to actually deal with the crime wave. We want to make Caroline Springs a 24-hour police station, considering the extent of the population growth in the north-west. We also want to bring in bail reform, mandatory sentencing for offences against the person, and more to the point, change the attitude in the justice system so that the justice system works for those people who obey the law, not protect those who break it. In relation to the western suburbs specifically, I’d say one of the issues the west is feeling more than anywhere in the state is unmanaged population growth. Melbourne’s outer west and north-west is evidence of population growth that is now getting out of control. I believe we need to fix our growth boundary and start moving population growth to regional centres, to decentralise. We’ll have a minister for decentralisation, a state government department focused on decentralisation, we’ll have immediately a Minister for Geelong, a Geelong planning statement, a Geelong infrastructure audit all done in the first six months to focus sustainable
growth on a place like Geelong earlier and to help take some of that pressure off Melbourne’s west. But we cannot keep growing Victoria the next 30 years the same way we have the last 30 years. The western suburbs have long held a reputation for being Labor’s heartland. Considering the margins, do you believe you could actually win a seat come November? If so, which seats do you have your eye on, and why? There’s a couple. Telmo Languiller’s seat [Tarneit], where he’s retiring, gives us enormous opportunity … Don Nardella’s seat in Melton, I think, has enormous opportunities for the party. Go a bit further north in Sunbury, there’s a three per cent swing to us in the last election, and we have clear commitments for Sunbury – a specific City of Sunbury, which we stand by as a promise. We will have a City of Sunbury, we will give them their own council, we will have that split from Hume. I think Sunbury wants that, I think they’re entitled to that, they have asked for that, and I will deliver that for them. That’s a clear point of difference: Labor doesn’t want a City of Sunbury, I do. And the people in Sunbury will have that clear choice to be masters of their own destiny, or to stick with a council based in Broadmeadows. It’s up to them.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir uncovers a new chapter in Sudanese cooking Jibrine Akima Magdaline Jok wears a number of hats. She’s a Caroline Springs mother of four children. She’s a successful career woman in the finance sector. She’s a proud member of the South Sudanese community in Melbourne and Australia. And now she’s the author and publisher of a fabulous South Sudanese cookbook. So far as she and I can ascertain, it’s the first South Sudanese cookbook – ever. The book was borne of her love of cooking and, more specifically, through a visit to her mother in Africa that came after more than a decade of separation. She has been inspired, too, by the thought that food traditions can be a profound community glue in fraught times of war, refugees and families scattered to the four winds around the globe. “When I visited my mum, we cooked every day and I heard all the stories,” Jibrine says. “I spent most of my time jotting down notes and practising the dishes that she made on a daily basis. “This advice she shared stays with me: ‘The more time, patience, love and passion you have for cooking meals, the greater the taste’.” I am in awe of Jibrine’s efforts in scrambling up an Everest-like learning curve to bring this project to life. She’s obviously very capable – but until now she had zero experience with writing, editing,
publishing, cookbooks, translation and more. On top of all that, she has successfully created a book of more than 100 recipes directly from the maternal source – bringing to life in the written word recipes previously transmitted only by the verbal/visual folk methods of “a handful of this, and a pinch of that”. Like all great cookbooks, Jibrine’s effort can be seen as an end in itself – it’s beautiful to handle and read, and the photographs are simple, honest and not inappropriately styled in terms of glam. There’a strong accent on a wide variety of stews – meat, poultry, fish, pulses. The recipes appear to be straightforward and well presented, and most of the ingredients of the easily obtainable variety. In some ways, Jibrine’s cookbook journey is just beginning. The challenge now is to get that book and those recipes into the kitchens of foodies everywhere. SPORT Off and running for anniversary year It will be a special St Albans Gift this year with the big race meeting celebrating its 10th anniversary. The Gift, run by the St Albans Sports Club on behalf of the St Albans cricket and football clubs, has become a popular annual event on the Victorian Athletic League calendar. This year’s meeting will be held at Kings Park Reserve on January 20, with a massive 11-race card, including the 120-metre open gift, which has $5500 in prizemoney. It is a free community event with the support of the Brimbank City Council. The St Albans Gift originated through a conversation between St Albans Sports Club chairman of the day, Harry McFerran, and
Victorian Athletic League committee member of the time, Terry O’Donnell, who became friends though their links with the Western Region Football League umpires program. McFerran and O’Donnell spent two years planning the concept of St Albans hosting a VAL meeting. It was an extra push from St Albans Sports Club general manager of the time, Des Barnard, that ensured the project would get off the ground, after he lobbied the council to fund the event. The St Albans Gift finally came to fruition on one of Victoria’s darkest days in 2009. The first meeting had to be delayed because of the devastating Black Saturday bushfires,
but the race meeting went ahead and a new tradition was born. Ten years on, and the St Albans Gift is still going strong. The question is, who will etch their name into history in becoming the winner of the 10th event? The day is not just about running – it’s also about fun and family. There will be jumping castles, a petting zoo, roving superheroes, food trucks and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade will show off one of its fire trucks. IN THE DOGHOUSE Trent Churchill was a star at the Werribee Football club during his 103-game career earning a reputation as a fierce competitor, a great leader and a nice bloke. Nearly one year ago when he was one of the casualties of the Bourke Street attack he needed all those qualities. “Churchy” suffered head injuries which have affected his memory, and his left leg was shattered in several places. One saving grace is the memory loss means he has no recollection of the incident. A work mate walking to lunch with him was killed. He is putting his life back together with a second child due in May and his annual date with the Lorne Pier to Pub swim this weekend. Former teammate Marcus O’Connor said to him: “Life is not a dress rehearsal. You only get one go at it. It’s here to enjoy.” Trent is living by that mantra today and for the rest of his life.

Lions face the top test By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park enters the new year on top of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north-west B1 ladder, but first-year coach Ian Blanchett has warned his players that bigger challenges await in the second half of the summer. The Lions impressed in the lead-up to the mid-season break with four first-innings wins and an outright victory from their opening six games, but a softer draw has meant they have avoided all teams in the top four so far. Blanchett is eagerly anticipating the next month of cricket and the opportunities it offers to discover if his side is the real deal. “It’s going really well so far, but we have played a lot of the bottom teams,” he said. “This next period of matches is really going to let us know where we are. “We’re playing good cricket, but we’re actually not playing our best cricket yet as far as I can see, so we’ve definitely got some room for improvement.” The most encouraging aspect for Deer Park has been the even contribution with bat and ball.
There has not been an unhealthy over-reliance on one or two stars to carry the side to victory. “We’re bowling really well as a unit and things are coming together with the bat,” Blanchett said. “It’s a nice little team at the minute.” Ricky Suvada is leading the way with the bat for Deer Park. The all-rounder has scored 229 runs at 32.7 to be ranked fifth in the competition. Suvada has the potential to be a match-winner each time he pulls on the pads for the Lions. “He’s a bit of a go-to man,” Blanchett said. “He contributed pretty well with the bat – [he’s] a bit of a dasher. But I hope to have a bit of a calming influence on him and get him to bat some extra time … the longer he’s at the crease, the better for us. “He’s having a good all-round season again, as he does every season.” Sri Lankan imports Angelo Emmanuel and Nilanka Vedagedara have been outstanding for Deer Park. Emmanuel, in his second year at the club, has been damaging with the bat, producing 175 runs at 43. His off-spin will be crucial in the latter stages of the season.
Vedagedara, a newly acquired left-arm speedster, has been a revelation, leading the competition with 19 wickets at 12.1. “He’s a good pick-up,” Blanchett said. “He’s scaring a few batsmen when he changes his pace.” Blanchett has been back in Melbourne for nine years after spending his formative years in England. The 42-year-old, who coached Craigieburn to a premiership last season, is hopeful of a long association with Deer Park, as it is just a five-minute drive from his Caroline Springs home and he has been made to feel welcome this summer. “I’ve been around a few clubs, but I’ve been wanting to get a club that was closer to home so I can get my family more involved,” he said. “It’s started off really well at Deer Park and hopefully I’ll be there for a long time to come.” The VTCA cancelled all games on Saturday due to the extreme weather. Deer Park will hit the road for a two-day game against St Andrews Pascoe Vale starting on Saturday.

second half of the cricket season does not offer much for a few clubs. Werribee and Hoppers Crossing would need a big form reversal to figure in the VSDCA finals. Werribee looks the more likely if it can get it together, it certainly has the talent. The Tigers have three home games out of five while Hoppers has a single home fixture. Yarraville Club Cricket Club is on top of the VTCA ladder with the top batsman and bowler in the competition – Konrad Kurta (407 runs) and James Damjanovski (16 wickets). Spotswood is third, with Seddon just out in fifth position. The VTCA round from last weekend will be played on February 4.

Young Western academy swimmers making a splash

Young swimming star Noah O’Donnell has been in top form over the holiday period. The Western Aquatic Academy representative backed up from his strong showing at the Pacific School Games to produce some eye-catching performances at the Victorian Age Championships. O’Donnell, from Taylors Hill, has a swag of medals to show for his hard work, collecting medals in six of his seven events at the state age competition, including gold in the 200-metre individual medley, silver in the 100m backstroke and 200m butterfly and bronze in the 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m backstroke. Western Aquatic squad director Paul Taylor was adamant that O’Donnell would have even more gold medals had it not been for a tiring December swimming schedule. “Noah did some massive PBs [at the Pacific School Games] and did quite well, but it can be hard to stay up for such a long period of time,” Taylor said. “Some of the swims he did at the Pacific
School Games, if he had replicated them, he would’ve got even more golds at the Victorian state championships. “It was still an awesome effort to get medals in six out of seven events.” It was not O’Donnell’s only success in the water over the holidays. The 11-year-old competed in an open water swim at Williamstown and took out the 750 metre event. Western Aquatic president Vince Taylor said O’Donnell’s success was the result of hard work. “He’s doing about seven sessions a week,” Taylor said. “That, as an 11 year old, shows that he’s pretty committed to getting the best out of himself. “That’s what they have to do to continue to get better.” O’Donnell’s best placing at the Pacific School Games was second in the 100m butterfly final. Tall order for Deer Park By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park’s midfield will be taller, bigger and stronger as it strives for a sixth consecutive Western Region Football League division 1 premiership. The Lions have targeted tall midfielders who will not take a backward step as a key ingredient to warding off the assault on the side’s supremacy that will be coming from opposition clubs in 2018. “Pretty much our whole centre line will be an average of six-foot-three, which is great moving into our toughest season to date,” Lions coach Marc Bullen said. “That’s where footy is going now.” Deer Park has made a splash in the transfer market by signing former Carlton player Paul Bower. Bower played 70 games in the big league, mainly as a defender, but has since been unleashed into the midfield with Heidelberg at suburban level. While Bower will play roles as a defender, Bullen considers his main value as a big bodied onballer. “He’s been in suburban footy for the last four years and he’s demonstrated that he’s still an elite player in the Northern Football League as a six-foot-three onballer who can play down back and do a role as well,” Bullen said. “He won Heidelberg’s best and fairest last year and won a couple of premierships in a pretty dominant era. “We’re certainly going to utilise him through the middle of the ground.” Deer Park has also brought in Dyson Stevens and Jason Williams – both tall midfielders. Stevens can play at the coalface, while Williams will roam on a wing. The scary thought for the rest of the competition is those new additions will compliment the star-studded midfielders already in the Deer Park ranks. The Lions do not have any significant exits so far, so their depth will be as good as it has been in any time over the past five seasons. “We’re batting very deep, especially adding some six-foot-three midfielders into the mix, complimenting our existing midfield with Jack [Purton Smith], Shannon Byrnes, Kwame [McHarg] and ‘Klixy’ [Kevin Klix] and Spiros [Amarantidis] coming back,” Bullen said. “We think we’ve got a good nucleus of onballers.” Deer Park will continue to strive for an edge. The Lions dynasty is not only about talent, it’s about making the pieces fit and continuing to evolve as a team and a club. deep into the season, but he is full of praise for the work his players put in away from the club to stay in peak condition. However, he warned his players to expect a tough build-up to the pre-season block of matches. “Our pre-season has started a bit later in the past, but we’ll have to do a fairly big block of training when we get back and make sure we’re
ready to go round one because I believe the league is going to improve overall and we don’t want to be caught napping,” Bullen said. Deer Park has also added highly rated players Will Krithararis, Taylor Jones and former junior Bronson Booth to the squad. Jason Kennedy and Rodney van Riet will be playing assistant coaches for the Lions this season.
Lockley also continues to make waves. Lockley came away with gold medals in the 14-year-old 100m and 200m breaststroke at the Victorian Age Championships. The talented Lockley has even bigger ambitions in 2018. “In the 200m breastroke, he’s the Victorian record holder, he achieved that at the Pacific School Games,” Taylor said. “No one in Victorian history has ever gone as fast as Charlie at 14 years old in the 200m breaststroke. “He got a second and a third at the Australian Age Championships last year, so we’re hoping to really do well at this year’s Australian champs. “If he swims like he did at the Pacific School Games, he will get close to taking out the national championship in April.” Western Aquatic is a newly formed academy that operates out of Aqua Pulse in Hoppers Crossing and the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre. Consistency key for finals Caroline Springs knows every game is vital in the second half of the season as it looks to move into the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 top four. Sitting fifth, Caroline Springs faces three of the top four sides in the run home – wins against those sides should see it move up the ladder. Caroline Springs captain Kane Sevior said the players know they have to play consistent cricket over the rest of the season to have a chance of finishing in the top four. “We didn’t set the aim of playing finals, but it would be nice if we could make them,” Sevior said. “It’ll be an interesting few weeks and if we play finals we will have earned our spot. “We’ve got a couple of games against the top sides and it’s a good opportunity. If we’re going to get there, we need to show we can beat the top teams now.” Sevior said it had been an interrupted start to the season, with rain, heat and walkovers meaning they haven’t taken to the park as much as they would have liked. Saturday’s match against East Coburg, along with all VTCA games, was postponed until February 4 because of the heat. “It feels like we’ve watched more cricket than we’ve played,” Sevior said. “We haven’t really played many of the lower teams. We basically had a walkover against Barkley Street Uniting and missed out on points there.” He said making more runs this season had been the key to being more competitive. Gayashan Weerasekara has been a key to that and he sits second in the division’s runs scored this season. Sevior said they were likely to get a number of players back in the second part of the season which would add to the depth across all sides. They would continue to blood a number of youngsters across those sides as they look to the future. “We were looking to improve on last year, not just in the ones but in all our sides,” he said. “We’ve had parts in all our games where we’ve been competitive. In previous years, we’ve dropped away for a few hours.” Caroline Springs faces Moonee Valley in a two-day clash starting Saturday. Tara Murray
