On a mission for charity Sunshine Mission is putting out an urgent call for donations following an alarming increase in the number of people requiring food. Sunshine Mission manager Casey O’Brien said the problem has been exacerbated with Christmas looming. “Across the board we’ve seen a 14 per cent rise in people requiring assistance from the year ending August 2017,” Mr O’Brien said. “Christmas typically sees a lot of people facing financial hardship and this time of the year sees that number increased to about 20 per cent. “The problem is particularly prevalent among females, pensioners and we’ve seen a rise in the number of New Zealanders requiring assistance too.” This year the mission is once again taking part in the Food for Families appeal. Mr O’Brien urged people to be mindful about what they donate. “We’re really after staple foods like rice, pasta and tinned food.” Donations can be made to the Sunshine Mission at 32 Withers Street, Sunshine.

Brimbank crime slides By Tate Papworth Crimes recorded in Brimbank have dropped by 11.5 per cent. Figures released by the Crime Statistics Agency last week show that 17,300 offences took place in Brimbank during the year ending September, 2017, down from the 19,549 recorded in the previous year. Police investigation and response Inspector for Brimbank and Melton, Dave Byrt, said the steep decline was a step in the right direction.

“We’re very happy with the figures,” he said. “They’re certainly vindication of hard work. We acknowledge that there’s still a lot of work to be done, but this is certainly a positive step.” Burglaries and break-and-enter offences have declined from 2023 to 1627. Inspector Byrt said the 19.5 per cent drop was a direct result of targeted policing. “Burglaries and home invasions are trending in the right direction, which is something we’ve invested significant resources in,” he said. “As part of operation Regnant, we had additional members on duty targeting known

offenders, particularly at times we knew offences were more likely to take place.” Drugs offences also fell, dropping from 1539 offences in 2016 to 1247 this year. Crimes against the person was the only category that increased, climbing to 2739 from 2562. Inspector Byrt said the rise could partly be attributed to a change in legislation. “Recent changes in legislation have seen more crime reports, especially in sex offences,” he said. “Places like schools are required to report incidents, which has all contributed to that rise.”

While crimes against the person rose, assault and related offences dropped by two per cent. There were 1514 assault and related offences, down on the 1545 recorded in the previous year. Inspector Byrt said the public has a large role to play in keeping the figures tracking down. “The police can’t do this on their own,” he said. “We need public assistance to keep the area safe. “People should remember to lock their doors at night and make sure their cars are locked in a safe location.”

Green light for sports revamp By Ewen McRae The redevelopment of St Albans Leisure Centre is a step closer, after Brimbank council outlined a timeline for the multi-million dollar project last week. The centre, which has been largely neglected since additional facilities were added in 1985, is set for a major facelift in the coming years, with planning well under way for a potential $50 million upgrade. A consultant has been appointed by the

council to develop a design brief and about 15 interested parties contributed their ideas at a Market Sounding workshop conducted in November. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the project was long overdue and would deliver many positive benefits for the community. “There is no denying the St Albans Leisure Centre is an ageing facility with outdated amenities and services that cannot compete with contemporary standards,” Cr Giudice said.

“The redevelopment of the St Albans Leisure Centre will be a major project and a significant investment for council and the community. It’s essential we make the most of the opportunity this presents to deliver a brand new custom-built leisure, aquatic and community facility of which the community can be proud. “We want to provide a facility that will include a new leisure and aquatic facility, a new community centre and a range of related health and social services all under the one roof. “We’re hoping to develop a facility that

delivers significant, measurable social and health benefits to the community,” The tender process is due to begin in February, 2018. The council has committed $200,000 in the current budget to start planning and design. Council’s long term financial plan has earmarked $1.8 million in 2018-19 for design and subsequent funding in 2019-20 and 2020-21 for construction. Construction is expected to begin in April 2019, and is estimated to be completed in December 2020.

Bag up some dignity A Sunshine Hospital social worker is bringing dignity to women in need this Christmas, and she needs your help. Senior social worker at the hospital, Diane Neri started working with not-for-profit group Handbags with Dignity 12 months ago to provide necessities for women presenting to the hospital escaping domestic violence. “We always see a rise in women fleeing domestic violence at this time of year,” Ms Neri said. “I remember one woman in particular who had fled and didn’t have Christmas presents for her children, and that triggered this whole thing. “I found Handbags with Dignity online, and they said they’d never thought about working with a hospital … they donated 60 bags for us to fill with basic necessities for those in need.” Through community donations and outreach, the bags were filled with basic necessities that are often left behind by women in the rush to get away from a bad situation.

Ms Neri said the response from the community since launching the program had been overwhelming, and the reactions from women who were given the bags often brought a tear to her eye. “I’ve been inundated with responses from the community wanting to donate toiletries, underwear, clothing,” she said. “You can’t underestimate how important it is to give these really basic things, to give some basic dignity to women. By Tate Papworth Helen Morrissey has been appointed as Brimbank City Council’s chief executive officer. Ms Morrissey has been serving in the role in an interim capacity since July this year. “I’m looking forward to working with the council to create stronger connections between council and the community and to strengthen community pride even more,” Ms Morrissey said. “Brimbank is transforming and the city has

a very important role to play as the greater west grows and evolves, together with the council we will seek to create positive and lasting change,” she said. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the appointment comes after a lengthy recruitment process during which Ms Morrissey emerged as the stand-out choice. “We are delighted that Helen is our new CEO, having acted in the role for the last six months, she has shown exceptional leadership and works extremely well with the council,” Cr Giudice said.

“Ms Morrissey was the stand-out candidate due to her knowledge, experience and clearly articulated passion for Brimbank.” Cr Giudice said Ms Morrissey has been a major driving force behind the council’s community engagement practices. Ms Morrissey joined Brimbank in 2010 as director of community and corporate relations. Before working in Brimbank, Ms Morrissey was general manager of corporate services at Maribyrnong City Council and also held a variety of management roles at Darebin City Council.

Council appoints ‘new’ CEO

Match time at Delahey Delahey Tennis Club is ready for another big summer, following the re-opening of two reconstructed courts recently. The two synthetic grass courts were refurbished at a cost of $447,000, as part of the council’s funding boost for the sport across the municipality. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the courts and additional LED lighting were ready for use. “The reconstruction of these tennis courts started in July. They replace the old courts that were originally built by developers and were experiencing cracking in the slab,” Cr Giudice said. “The works were completed earlier this month and have been handed back over to the Delahey Tennis Club to open up to its 200-plus members and the wider community for training, competition, coaching, social play and school use.”

The investment comes on the back of similar resurfacing works at Sydenham and Taylors Lakes tennis clubs and new lighting at Taylors Lakes, which have been completed in the past 12 months. The council has also unveiled plans for two court conversions at Keilor Park Tennis Club, four new courts at Errington Reserve, and a new pavilion at Errington Reserve to house the tennis club, all of which are expected to take place in the 2018-19 budget year. A 26-year-old Sunshine West man appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court last week, charged with murder and intentionally causing serious injury, following the death of a man in Braybrook on December 9. It is alleged two men were struck by a car and assaulted on Castley Crescent, with a 40-year-old taken to hospital where he later died, and a 44-year-old in hospital in a serious condition.

Shooting death

A 48-year-old Deer Park man appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court last week charged with murder, following the death of another man in Deer Park last week. A 37-year-old Deer Park man was located deceased on Poole Street with suspected gunshot wounds on December 14, with the 48-year-old arrested at the scene.

A Kings Park man is teaming up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to bring some Christmas cheer this year. Minh-Tuan Nguyen is raising money for the foundation through his Christmas lights display, which is synced up to music and makes for a spectacular sight for locals. Mr Nguyen said it was a highlight for the area every year. “There’s lots of people that come every night, and I have a donation tin for the Make-A-Wish Foundation out the front,” he said. “It’s good to raise some money for them, I’ve done it for the last four years or so. “The whole display is synced up to music that people can stream through their radio and watch from their car. People really like

Soccer plan kicks off A partnership between two Keilor schools could lead to the next generation of star soccer players and coaches. Keilor Downs College will partner with Keilor Views Primary School from next year, with senior students from the college visiting the primary school to coach and help with integration to high school. College soccer co-ordinator Josip Loncaric said it was a win-win for both schools. “It’s been part of our strategic plan for some time, to build some partnership with local primary schools, and with just a small park between both of these schools it makes sense for both of us,” Mr Loncaric said. “Keilor Views is one of our biggest feeder schools, so it gives a number of our students

a chance to coach at their old school, and also means those from the primary school that come to us … already know a few faces.” The college has seen strong results on the pitch this year, with three girls’ sides making it to the state championships,. The school is now part of the Premier League Cup with the chance to compete against the best schools regularly. Mr Loncaric said coaching would give his players opportunities after school. “The reality is that not everyone gets to become a professional player. Some are already leaning more towards coaching, so this will help in that development and give them a leg-up with pursuing coaching.”

Feral cats skew figures By Tate Papworth

A feral cat problem has been attributed to a drop in the number of reclaimed animals in Brimbank for a third consecutive year. Data supplied to the state government’s Know Your Council website shows that just 30 per cent of all cats and dogs collected by the council during the 2016-17 financial year were reclaimed by their owners. The number is significantly less than the state average of 51.24 per cent. Brimbank city development director

Stuart Menzies said feral cats were largely to blame. “Like most other municipalities, Brimbank does have a stray/feral cat problem and these are the majority of cats we collect,” Mr Menzies said. “Many of the stray and feral cats are found in bad health or are diseased.” Last year the council collected 960 dogs and 1832 cats, which included cats found wandering and those collected as part of the council’s cat trapping programs. Mr Menzies said the council was

committed to reducing its animal euthanasia rate and increasing re-housing. “As part of council’s commitment to reducing animal euthanasia rates – and in line with our recently updated Domestic Animal Management Plan – we will be looking into the possibility of entering into agreements with animal welfare groups to improve re-housing rates in Brimbank,” he said. Changes to the Domestic Animals Act mean there is now no limit on the time animals can be kept in shelters, which is also expected to reduce euthanasia rates.

Game’s on for Ardeer students Hours of hard work was made all the more worthwhile last week for a group of pupils from Ardeer Primary School. The pupils visited Estia Health Aged Care where they gave residents handmade wooden games. Ardeer Primary School chaplain Rob Nansen co-ordinated the initiative and said the response exceeded expectations. “We did this last year for the first time and everyone loved it, so we decided to do it again this year,” he said. This year pupils created a tangram puzzle and a quoits set. Bunnings Warehouse donated some equipment to get the program started. “It was really good to see the students go from zero experience to having real skill and firing along really confidently,” Mr Nansen said. Volatile weather shakes up trains By Tate Papworth November’s wild weather contributed to a decline in the number of Sunbury line train services being delivered on time. Flash flooding, a lightning strike and high temperatures which slowed trains resulted in the lowest punctuality rate on the Sunbury line for this year, according to Metro trains. Public Transport Victoria data for November showed 88.1 per cent of services on the line arrived on time, down from 90.9 per

cent in October. The Sunbury line’s highest punctuality rate was 92.9 per cent in April. Punctuality of peak services also dipped with 86.3 per cent of services meeting targets. Reliability on the Sunbury line (the percentage of services that run) was slightly above the yearly average. In total, 99.3 per cent of all services were delivered throughout November, while 99 per cent of peak services were delivered. Metro spokesman Marcus Williams said reliability figures had been helped by an

increase in services. “Ten extra weekly services were recently added to the Sunbury line in peak times when our passengers need them most,” Mr Williams said. “We’re delivering more services, more often for our passengers, which is supported by increased maintenance and major network upgrades.” He said unexpected weather events, including a lightning strike at St Albans, had affected service punctuality.

Mr Williams said the Level Crossing Removal Project and the new Metro Tunnel would vastly improve the Sunbury line. “Work to remove level crossings continues and the new Metro Tunnel will be a game-changer for the Sunbury line, bringing with it new high capacity trains and signalling,” he said. Works to remove the Melton Highway level crossing in Sydenham are under way. Level crossing removals at Main and Furlong roads in St Albans have been completed.

Seventy years of dreams It’s been 70 years since the first Turkish Cypriots arrived in Australia and to celebrate, the Turkish Cypriots of Melbourne are throwing a day-long festival. Festival committee president Janev Aziz said the celebration will be a mix of food, dance and reflection. “The festival is going to really showcase everything that’s great about our culture,” Ms Aziz said. “There’ll be plenty of food, we’ll have music, and we’ll even have a folk dancing group coming down from Sydney. “Then, at the end of the night we’ll finish the event with a fireworks show.” While the occasion is one of celebration, Ms Aziz said it’s also an opportunity to recognise the first settlers. “The first settlers arrived here with a suitcase and nothing more. They didn’t know the language and had nothing more than a dream to start a new life,” she said.

“To help honour them, we’re hoping to have a photo display featuring the first migrants.” Although the festival is celebrating Turkish Cypriots culture, Ms Aziz encouraged everyone to attend. “This isn’t just for Turkish Cypriots. We want to share our culture and we’d encourage everyone to come down and share. “We did one of these celebrating 60 years and it was a massive success, so we’re expecting a big turnout of about 8000 people across the day to mark 70 years.” The festival will be held on Sunday, March 4 at the Sunshine Mosque and will run from 9am to 10pm. SPORT Versatile Cougars primed for new year Kealba-Green Gully has a target on its back, but that comes with the territory when you are a three-time defending champion. Not only are the Cougars getting the best out of their opponents each time they take to the field, but the competition in general has improved this summer and the gulf between the top and bottom sides appears to be closing. “If we drop even five per cent, the other teams will be up for us,” Long said. “If we’re slightly off our game, we’re giving sides a chance because the competition is getting better and more even.” While the team is yet to click into first gear as a collective, Kealba-Green Gully does have a plethora of batting and bowling options – if one player is down, another will pick up the slack. Four Cougars are ranked in the top 15 of the Luscombe Shield batting charts, including

Long (292 at an average of 58), Matthew Nadzielski (239 at 39), Roshan Laksiri (220 at 44) and Dave Rogowski (209 at 34). Three of the top five wicket takers are Cougars, including Laksiri (17 at 10), Danny Viani (14 at 19) and Nadzielski (12 at 11). The Cougars also have three spinners – Laksiri, Viani and Long – who will be crucial on the long hot summer days in the field still to come. “I’ve always said for us to go forward, we don’t want to rely on one or two people with the bat or the ball, or even in the field,” Long said. “We’ve got guys who can contribute both sides of the game. “We’ve got a bit of variety and good options as we go deeper into the season.” Lance Jenkinson

Georgies in transition By Lance Jenkinson Sunshine George Cross has secured Knights Stadium as a temporary home for games in 2018 while its new home ground is built at Taylors Hill. The Georgies have been informed that Chaplin Reserve is no longer available for use, with works to begin on turning the site into townhouses. Georgies coach Tony Ciantar said that while the transition phase would not be easy, the club would make the most of its time at Knights Stadium. “It’s a great facility, no question,” Ciantar said. “It’s just going to be hard because we’re not going to be able to train on it. To be honest, there’s nothing like home.” Sunshine bade farewell to its traditional home at Chaplin Reserve with a fourth-placed finish in NPL2 last season. The Georgies have already taken the first steps towards an even higher finish next season. Ciantar has made some moves in the transfer market that will add experience and depth, and is not done with wheeling and dealing yet. “The main thing for me is that we’ve retained our core players,” he said. “A few players that we’re bringing in now is to take us to another level. We’re hoping to add to our signings this side of Christmas.” Sunshine will have a new face between the posts next season. Sermin Sadikovski, a title winner at Kingston City, arrives with his eyes firmly set on the No.1 goalkeeper position. “He’s a quality ’keeper, he’s hard-working at training and so far looks the goods,” Ciantar said. Slave Bozinovski, brought in from North Geelong Warriors, will provide much-needed experience in defence. Danny Barakat, a seasoned campaigner and former Sydenham Park attacker, will be a key addition to the Georgies’ front line. The Georgies have also signed lower league star Jungho Kim. Kim has won club best-and-fairest awards at Sporting Whittlesea and Sydenham Park in the past two seasons, but the question is whether he can translate that form into the NPL. “It’s a little bit slower in state league 2, so it’s a matter of if he’s going to be up to the pace and the work rate in the NPL, but time will tell,” Ciantar said. “Technically, he’s a brilliant footballer, but he’s got to prove that to me on the park – that he ticks all the other boxes.” Sunshine’s biggest loss is Christopher Dib, who has jumped up a level to play with Dandenong Thunder. The Georgies played NPL club South Melbourne in a friendly on Wednesday night, losing 3-0.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ From the outside, the life of a professional sportsperson looks very glamorous, but the harsh reality is it is a job. Many refer to AFL football as “the grind”. For a group of young men, that began a few weeks ago when they were drafted. The Inside the Kennel show last week introduced a couple of the new boys to supporters. Ed Richards and Aaron Naughton are fresh-faced 18 year-olds, while Hayden Crozier comes from a few years at Fremantle. Ed and “Naughty” are on a steep, physically demanding learning curve, though Aaron is yet to join main training with groin issues. Combining the excitement of a new job with school results, getting a drivers’ licence and the normal teenage stuff makes for an interesting life for the boys. ■ New players into the system always talk about the step up in physical demands from under-age football, but for rookie Callum Porter it was more than a wake-up call. The young man from Officer was a few teeth lighter after a mishap in a boxing session. Bulldogs veteran Liam Picken accidentally dislodged some of Callum’s pearly whites when his glove slipped off the punching bag and connected with the rookie’s jaw. Hardly just another day at the office. ■ There are big changes at the Williamstown Football Club with president Fred Hall stepping down last week for family and business reasons. Vice-president Michael Howlett has been appointed president, while former player Clint Rippon joins the board. Grant Dooley has stepped down due to an overseas business posting. The requirements of VFL football are exactly the same as those for AFL, but with a fraction of the staff. Board members give their time and that is a difficult balance with business and family. Both Fred and Grant have been on the board for five years and will no doubt remain key Seagull members. Kealba-Green Gully has only touched the surface of what it can produce this summer, according to captain Evan Long. That’s a scary thought for the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association Luscombe Shield clubs that have been powerless to stop the Cougars from winning the past three flags. On paper, the Cougars seem to be on the right track – ranked first in runs aggregate and wickets taken, and only beaten in one game prior to the Christmas break – but Long is not convinced his team has come close to realising its full potential this season. “From a team perspective, I don’t think we’ve played anywhere near our best as yet,” he said. “We’re still up near the top of the ladder, which is what we’re aiming for each year, but hopefully we’re going to get a bit more consistency after Christmas.”

West’s star power shines through By Lance Jenkinson A special group of western suburbs athletes took to the stage to accept Don Deeble Sports Star monthly awards in 2017. There was a vast array of sports represented, be it indoors or outdoors, on the table, court or field. It showed that west is the best when it came to rising sporting talent. In February, we found the first of our 10 finalists, with para table tennis star Nathan Pellissier claiming the first monthly award. Pellissier is an inspirational athlete, not allowing cerebral palsy to hinder his progress in his chosen sport. A super determined person, Pellissier overcame a number of injury setbacks to bring down Rio Paralympian Barak Mizrachi and claim a national title. It is just one step in Pellissier’s quest to reach the 2020 Paralympics. Softballer Sam Reale was next cab off the rank in March. Incredibly, Reale was the only Victorian selected to represent the Aussie Steelers at the International Friendship Games, returning home with a gold medal. Also a talented baseballer, Reale has earned a sports scholarship for university in the US. April nominee Julia Bourke is another one of this Deeble class to earn a sports scholarship to

a US university in athletics for her excellence in the throwing events. Bourke did just about everything she could in her age group in Australia, thus wanting the challenge of overseas competition, where she will be tested to the maximum against talented throwers in the NCAA athletics system. to the US to take up a sports scholarship in Miami. The youngest of all monthly winners came in June in 14-year-old basketballer Paul Tsapatolis. The 205-centimetre starting centre of under-16 Vic Metro team is already fielding contract offers from Europe. The finalist with the steadiest hand has to go to shooter Thomas Armstrong. The 2017 Don Deeble Sports Star will be announced at the annual awards at Allegra Function Venue in St Albans on January 31. The winner will take home $5000 and the runners up will receive $2500, all donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Bendigo Bank Strathmore has also donated a $1000 encouragement award.

Alltrack rides nicely in its niche By Vani Naidoo, Marque Motoring When Volkswagen decided to give the Golf a mid-life spruce up, the Alltrack was also invited to the party and presented with a range of trendy updates that will keep its dance card filled. For starters, there are two more variants to accompany the 132TSI – the 132TSI Premium and a diesel, the 135TDI Premium – that will offer buyers greater options. And there are tweaks to design, infotainment and safety features to add more value to the proposition. The Alltrack is well-equipped with standard features with options packages for those who fancy a touch more. Our entry-level 132TSI boasted 17-inch alloys, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights, cruise control with speed-limiter, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, reverse camera, parking sensors and a comprehensive safety package that has been boosted further with this update. The Golf Alltrack has never hurt the eye and a slightly refined exterior with new LED lights and bumpers certainly reinforces that feeling. It is restrained but classy, a look replicated on the inside too, where quality materials and a streamlined design are complemented by restrained trim and sensible buttons and dials. A larger 8.0-inch colour touchscreen now fronts the infotainment system and it is easy to navigate with clear crisp modern-looking graphics. Pairing your phone is child’s play with smartphone connectivity through Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The unit itself, is nicely integrated into the dash. Under the bonnet is the same 1.8-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder that arrived with the Alltrack in 2015. It is punchy and reliable with 132kW of power and 280Nm of torque and

drives through a smooth six-speed dual-clutch auto. There is also the choice of a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel which delivers 135kW and 380Nm and is paired with a seven-speed transmission. The Alltrack’s safety package now has additional active crash avoidance features like front assist with city emergency brake, front and rear sensors, trailer assist and a driver fatigue detection system. The cabin feels comfortable and reasonably spacious, with passengers benefitting from

more headroom than the Golf. However, there’s not much more room to stretch out, especially in the rear. The back seat is designed for three but the transmission tunnel suggests that two would be the preferable choice. The Alltrack glides along without fuss, with enough power when needed. It performs well on winding roads and the open highway. It remains quite flat through the corners despite its increased height, with good grip

and a fair bit of finesse. The ride is on the firmish side, but handling is comfortable and refinement is as you would expect from Volkswagen. The 4Motion all-wheel drive system offers extra assurance on most surfaces. While the Alltrack is no real off-roader, it does make light work of secondary roads and is good in slippery conditions. Despite fuel-saving technologies, the Alltrack is not as light on the juice as you may like. We struggled to match the official 6.8L/100km efficiency figures. While wagons may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the Alltrack does offer that higher middle ground between sedan and SUV that may appeal. It is fun to drive, spacious and comfortable enough for families and brings that little touch of adventure.
