Tennis event holds serve Brimbank residents are being urged to head courtside to try out tennis as 10 days of special events aimed at boosting interest in the sport get under way across the region. Eleven clubs across Brimbank are taking part in In2Tennis events, which will include club open days, cardio tennis, fast4, regular games and casual hits. Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said with the Australian Open now putting Melbourne centre-stage again, it was the perfect time to get out and give tennis a go. “There’s no charge to take part, so if you’ve ever thought about trying tennis, if you play regularly or want to get back into it, this is the perfect opportunity to get involved,” Cr Hedditch said. “There’s something for everyone and opportunities to continue playing beyond the event.” In2Tennis starts on Friday, January 20, at the Hampshire Square pop-up park in Hampshire Road, Sunshine, at 2pm. All-out alert for puss in pipe A stray kitten was rescued from a dumpster at Keilor Park last week following a joint effort by local emergency services. Firefighters received a call for help from the RSPCA at 11am on January 9, after its officers were unable to free the cat. MFB sent a crew from Keilor Station, which requested back-up from the Sunshine Rescue Unit. The kitten had to be sedated and covered in olive oil before firefighters could slowly pull the animal from the pipe at the bottom of the bin. The kitten was tired and dehydrated, but otherwise in good shape, after its harrowing ordeal. Firefighters have nicknamed the kitten ‘Brian’, after the firey who kept the kitten calm during its rescue. Ewen McRae

A Sunshine woman who was wounded by a stray bullet last week is recovering at home, as police urge the perpetrator to come forward. Deborah Smith, 56, suffered a surface wound to her left arm when she was hit by a bullet after poking her head over the back fence of her McIntosh Road house to investigate loud noises from a nearby reserve about 5pm on January 9. She was taken to Sunshine hospital, but the wound did not require stitches. “Now I feel all right – just nervous,” Mrs Smith said the next day. “I feel very, very lucky.” Russell, Mrs Smith’s husband, said it was lucky the incident was not more serious. “She heard the bangs, which is not an uncommon thing out the back, with fireworks and things like that,” he said. “Couldn’t see nothing through the crack in the back fence, so she got up on the dog kennel, didn’t hear nothing, as she was getting down, that’s when whatever it was hit her in the arm. “We need to catch these people … if it happens again, the next people might not be so lucky.” Neighbours said they heard a number of gun shots coming from the nearby reserve, which runs alongside Kororoit Creek behind Mrs Smith’s home. Police searched the reserve following the incident, but were unable to find any shells or shrapnel. They say Mrs Smith was the victim of a random shooting and was not specifically targeted. They are now appealing for witnesses, and the gunman, to come forward. “If anyone was in the Kororoit Creek area at the time, they should come forward with any information they have,” Detective senior constable Megan McMullen said.

Brimbank City Council is teaming up with Tennis Victoria and ANZ to offer 10 days of no-charge activities at all Brimbank tennis clubs during the Australian Open, from January 20 to January 29. In2Tennis offers fun tennis activities for all ages, including introductory tennis, open days and community court use. No tennis experience is needed to take part. In the coming months, residents, traders and motorists of Keilor Village Shopping Centre can look forward to new raised pedestrian pavement and crossings, a resurfaced car park, feature seating areas, street furniture, and new bus stops and shelters.

Brimbank City Council is proud to present Outing Disability, a photographic exhibition and panel discussion, in collaboration with Family Planning NSW, GoWest, Midsumma Festival and internationally acclaimed photographer Belinda Mason.

The centre will be trading ‘business as usual’ while more than $980,000 of upgrade works are completed. In line with the Keilor Village Concept Plan adopted in April last year, local village materials have been used in the design – including blue stone and timber. To minimise disruptions works will initially focus on the shopping strip area and car park as a priority and works are scheduled to be completed by April, 2017. Brimbank Cinespace The Brimbank Cinespace project is now open to people from Brimbank’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities, to apply for participation in a six-month film and theatre project.

It’s important not to commission lion dancers who have not already obtained a permit. This year’s Lunar New Year celebrations commence early, on 29 January. It’s an exciting and festive tradition, however if not done carefully, it can pose a hazard to people, animals and the environment without adequate risk management in place.

Lion Dance associations need to apply for a permit because the events will be monitored and those without a Brimbank City Council event permit will not be permitted to perform and could incur a heavy fine. Council work with lion dance associations to ensure public safety is maintained at all times and lion dance associations who meet Council’s requirements will be issued an event permit. Ardeer Reserve will soon be the home of a brand new $1.3 million soccer pavilion, which is being built to benefit the many people in Ardeer involved in soccer activities.

The part-time program is an exciting opportunity and requires a basic commitment to attend workshops one night a week from February onwards to produce films and stories, and there is no charge to participate.

Brimbank Mayor Cr John Hedditch said Council has awarded a contract to demolish the old pavilion and change room block that was in a poor condition, and to replace it with a new sports pavilion that meets community needs.

The stories will launch at a community event in August.

Village makeover takes shape By Ewen McRae The transformation of Keilor Village has begun, with almost $1 million of upgrade works kicking off last week in the shopping strip. The works stem from the Keilor Village vision and concept plan, adopted by Brimbank council in April last year, and will include new raised pedestrian pavements and crossings, a resurfaced carpark, seating areas, street furniture, and new bus stops and shelters. trail along the length of the village, as well as new trees to go in, and landscaping. The project will cost $980,000, with Melbourne Water contributing $100,000 to build a rain garden and viewing deck at the Old Calder Highway and Kennedy Street corner.

Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said the village upgrades would improve its appearance while also easing traffic congestion. “The works being undertaken will greatly improve functionality in the Keilor Village area while maintaining and enhancing the history and character of the village,” Cr Hedditch said. “The development of the Keilor Village vision document and concept plan was a real community effort. “These works will see the vision and plans, crafted by the community in partnership with council, transform into reality.”

Paul Blackmore from Sweet Lulu’s Cafe said it was good the works are going ahead, despite any minor inconveniences. “I don’t think it will affect us much, but I feel for the guys down the other end of the village,” Mr Blackmore said. “It’s just one of those things we have to get through … it will hopefully be worth it when it’s all done.” It will be business as usual, with works starting on the shopping strip area and carpark as a priority to minimise disruptions. The upgrades are expected to be complete by the end of April.

Dust off the jackets In a first for this side of the West Gate Bridge, a fair of old vinyls and turntable paraphernalia will be held at Yarraville next month. Fair convenor and community radio DJ ‘Lord Lucifer’ – whose name refers to the blues being long known as ‘the devil’s music’ – said while demographic of Melbourne’s west is rapidly changing, there are still no record shops here. “If people anywhere in the west wanted to go and buy vinyl, a stylus or something, they’ve probably got to travel in to the city or further afield,” he said. “Well this is going to change … the stores are coming to the western suburbs – 40 individual commercial and private traders.” He said the fair would have new and vintage vinyl, LPs, 45s, rarities, collectibles, stereo supplies and repair stalls, as well as live entertainment from local DJs and musicians. Among the sellers are Yarraville’s Barry Russell, who co-owns Vinyl record store

in Fitzroy; Sunshine’s Murray Saunders, who specialises in highest-quality Japanese pressings; and Jamie Jones, who started JJ’s Vinyl online record store. “Whilst all popular genres will be available, every trader will have a specialist or niche area on offer,” Lord Lucifer said. “There will be no flea market bargain bins or op-shop dross – this is a quality event aimed at the discerning collector, as well as those just starting.” Yarraville Music and Record Fair will be at the Yarraville Club on February 5 from 11am-4.30pm. Searching for Tommy

Police continue to appeal for public help to locate missing Taylors Lakes’ teen Minh ‘Tommy’ Ngo. Mr Ngo was last seen by his family in Taylors Lakes on November 23 last year, about 11pm. Police have concerns for his welfare due to his age and the length of time he has been missing. He is described as 175cm tall, medium build with a shaved head, and sometimes frequents the CBD. Police believe Mr Ngo may have been seen in the Melbourne CBD since he left home and urge him to attend a police station. Charges over school rip-off ring By Henrietta Cook/The Age Former Keilor Heights Primary School principal Michael Giulieri is one of six men charged over their alleged involvement in a corrupt ring that swindled more than $6 million from Victorian state schools. These include conspiring to defraud, knowingly dealing with and concealing the proceeds of crime, and producing false documents. “IBAC’s investigation focused on allegations that senior departmental officers misappropriated funds from the department’s budget, through false and inflated invoicing as well as arranging payment of inappropriate expenses, such as excessive hospitality, travel and personal items,” a spokeswoman said. A long-awaited report by IBAC released last year found that Napoli obtained the corrupt

funds through so-called “banker schools” by “carefully selecting and grooming principals and business managers”. These principals allegedly signed off on false invoices and received a small cut of the transactions. Giulieri allegedly conceded during the 2015 hearing that he acted corruptly when he wrote a fake letter requesting $30,000 to pay for work that was never completed. The former principal allegedly wrote a bogus application requesting education department funds to pay Napoli’s son for work he never did.

The saga has been a major embarrassment for the education department, which has abolished the banker school system that was allegedly abused by the officials. Australian Principals Federation president Julie Podbury said that she looked forward to the matter being resolved. “Every education dollar is so hard won. You hate to see a dollar wasted in any way,” Ms Podbury said. “We would be pleased to see the matter properly dealt with.” with Ewen McRae

Sunshine’s Richard Harvie is no ordinary plumber. Mr Harvie has received $12,500 from Reece to continue his charity work in Zimbabwe, where he is helping set up self-sustaining fresh water projects to help more than 7000 people in the Gweru District, 300 kilometres from the country’s capital, Harare. Mr Harvie, who works alongside charity partner Hopes and Dreams, said the grant will be a huge help to ensuring his work continues. “I was a bit shocked when I got the call about it, but over the moon at the same time,” Mr Harvie said. “It’s a passion I’ve had for a long time now, but I’ve only recently done something about it … and since each well costs roughly $12,500 from start to finish, this is a big help for us.” Hopes and Dreams was founded by Mr Harvie’s friend, Nello Ragusa, and has set up wells in Zimbabwe and India in the past four

By Ewen McRae Visitors to Brimbank Park and Woodlands Historic Park have welcomed a new seasonal ranger to help over the busy summer months. Sharyn Mundy is one of 37 seasonal rangers being dispatched across the state to help with the numerous summer programs taking place. Ms Mundy, a primary school teacher and environmental educator, is leading ‘junior ranger programs’ throughout January, which will have young visitors learning about and identifying wildlife in the two parks and the rock formations at Organ Pipes National Park. Ms Mundy will also be managing a new community garden at Dodds Cottage in Brimbank Park. Southern Keilor Plains Western Melbourne District ranger team leader, Mark Gutterson, said it was important for parks to get extra help during the warmer months when visitor numbers swelled and demand for junior programs lifted during the school holidays. “It’s fantastic to have this extra help for summer. Midsumma sport the key to town By Goya Dmytryshchak A Melbourne Renegades’ Pride Harmony Day featuring family-friendly cricket that promotes inclusion will be held in Altona as part of GOWEST events for the Midsumma Festival. The day will be hosted by Melbourne Renegades, Cricket Victoria and Proud2Play, and is one of seven GOWEST events scheduled for Melbourne’s west between January 15 and February 4. James Lolicato, co-founder of the Proud2Play charity, said young people from

the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) community were often excluded from sports. “We want to promote the diversity that Hobsons Bay has to offer and use sport as a tool for inclusion,” he said. “What we find is that 78 per cent of young LGBTI people feel that sport, and in particular PE (physical eduction), is not a safe environment for them. “This might be because of overt or subtle homophobia, or transphobia or biphobia, that they find in a PE class. “So, of course, if you’re in a safe environment,

such as school, and you go into PE class, and you’re hearing these things said in PE, you’re never going to get into sport at an older age because you just don’t feel comfortable.” The cricket day is on January 21 from 1-5pm at JK Grant Reserve in Sugargum Drive, Altona. Hobsons Bay councillor Tony Briffa, who was the world’s first intersex mayor, said it was the eighth year of Midsumma in the west. “Hobsons Bay is proud to continue its long-standing partnership with the GLBTIQ community and Melbourne’s western region

councils to host GOWEST,” Cr Briffa said. “This festival, which is now in its eighth year, is a celebration of diversity and culture, which brings the spirit of Midsumma to the western suburbs “This is an inclusive event with a program of activities to suit all ages and interests,” Cr Briffa said. Pet cruelty laws change Animal welfare authorities have been given extra powers to crack down on animal cruelty – including pets left in cars during hot weather. The state government recently changed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act legislation to allow Agriculture Victoria, Victoria Police and RSPCA inspectors to issue compliance notices to people who commit or are likely to commit offences against animals. Inspectors were previously only authorised to issue compliance notices to pet owners. RSPCA Victoria chief executive Liz Walker has welcomed the changes, saying it was not always possible to issue notices to owners, and this can delay the welfare enforcement process. Dr Walker urged people to be mindful of leaving pets in cars, with the RSPCA receiving several reports a day of animals locked inside. “Pets can overheat even when the windows are down or the car is in the shade,” she said. “Dogs are particularly at risk of overheating in

a car as they cool themselves by panting. If the air around them is too hot, particularly if they don’t have access to water, dogs are physically unable to regulate their body temperatures. “It takes less than six minutes for an animal to suffer heat exhaustion and an agonising death if left in a hot car.” Agriculture minister Jaala Pulford has also cautioned against people transporting or handling livestock during the heat. And heat-stressed horses should be fed electrolytes and cooled by hosing them down with cool water or placing wet towels over them. MY BRIMBANK Taylors Lakes Cricket Club is in its first season of the Victorian Sub District competition, and life member Kris McMullen is relishing his role as club coach. He spoke to Ewen McRae. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I grew up in Taylors Lakes after moving there with the family in 1981 … back then there was only one road in and out of Taylors Lakes, not much else. What do you like best about the area? It has a real community feel about it. Our family is involved in the local cricket, footy and tennis clubs. The public transport is also very good, there is a good choice of schools and Watergardens shopping centre is on our doorstep. What could make the area better?

From a sporting perspective, another sporting reserve would be really beneficial with the amount of participants (mostly juniors) who are in the area. What are your favourite places to go to eat? The family often eats out at Café Greco at Watergardens, which is a great Greek restaurant, I also enjoy a sandwich from Café Dolce in Keilor village. How did you become involved at Taylors Lakes CC, and what has kept you at the club so long? A friend from primary school mentioned that there was a cricket club starting up in Taylors Lakes, that was back in 1981. Our ground back then was where Bunnings on the

Melton Highway currently is. It was basically a paddock in the middle of nowhere. Most Saturday mornings before play were spent chasing cows and sheep off the ground. Apart from two years in the mid ’90s, I have spent all of my time playing/coaching at Taylors Lakes and enjoyed every minute of it. I have seen the club grow from a social club in the early days to a professionally run club on and off the ground.

How is Taylors Lakes going in its first adapted and embraced the senior program. sub-district season? What are you hoping for from the second half It’s been a terrific start to our inaugural season of the summer? in the VSDCA; our first XI are currently sitting inside the top six, with the rest of the sides being Our first XI should be really pushing to play finals, and there is no reason why we can’t … more than competitive. Lately, Wednesday nights are burger nights for Consider The Sauce. So off we trek to Ballarat Road at Braybrook. We’ve tried Burgernomics previously – a few days after the joint opened – but it was all too busy and crazy at that point. On a lovely midweek night, things are a lot more orderly, and we’re keen to see what’s on offer. What we find is a small, tidy, fast-food cafe with a fairly typical menu of burgers and variously souped-up fries – think cheese, bolognese, nachos, and so on. The small crew on hand are upbeat, smiling and doing a top-class job. Turnaround time – from ordering to eating – is about as brief as possible, and way shorter than some places we could mention. While I mostly disapprove of the many leaning towers of customised burgers I see splattered across social media these days, I choose not to deny Bennie when his eyes light up at the blackboard special of the Bulldog Burger ($14.90) of beef, fried chicken, double cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo and BBQ sauce. In truth, while his Bulldog Burger is substantial, it still manages to stay within manageable proportions. Bennie’s unsure about the compatibility of the cow ‘n’ chook – but is thrilled with his burger nevertheless, and particularly the wonderfully crisp and big slab of chicken. He downs the lot.

SPORT Spirit lives up to its name to honour west Metropolitan West’s luck ran out in the semifinals of Cricket Victoria’s under-18 male state championships last week. Despite winning two of its four pool matches, a new structure for the championships meant the team also known as Western Spirit went through to the semi-finals while other teams with better winning records missed out. Spirit made 138 in its semi-final against South East Country before rain halted play with SEC at 1-15. The match ended up washed out, with SEC progressing to the grand final at the MCG on February 5 due to having better pool match results. Jordan Kight top-scored for the Spirit with 46. Spirit coach Ash Armstrong admitted they were lucky to get through to the finals. “It was disappointing the way it finished with the semi washed out,” he said. “The way it was set up you could win four

games and miss out on finals or you could win fewer games and make it through. It depended on which pool you were in, and we were lucky to win a couple of close games to get in.” Armstrong said his side’s fighting spirit also ensured it would make it through to the final four for a second straight season. “We knew going into the final pool game we either had to win or have a close loss. “We were up against it playing Metropolitan North West, who are a good side, but we kept fighting even after they passed our score and it was one of the reasons we played on Friday.” Armstrong said the team probably didn’t perform as well as it would have liked. At times, the side hadn’t clicked. “In saying that, everyone stood up at different times,” he added. “We had a pretty steady team. We had a couple of 40s, but no one made 50; a couple of

bowlers took a few wickets, but no one took a bag. So I was pleased with how everyone contributed in some way. The main thing was that they learnt a lot about themselves and their game.” Former Melton player Kight was the best of the batsman, averaging 34 with the bat, while Jack Budd and Ben Roosenboom took eight wickets each. Armstrong said five to six players were in the bottom-age category and eligible to be selected to play in the side again next season. The under-18 boys team was one of three Spirit sides in action last week. Under-14 and under-16 girls also played in state championships. The under-16 team finished at the bottom of its pool, after not winning a match. The under-14s won one match to top their pool. Tara Murray

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Australia’s latest cricket pin-up boy Billy Stanlake has a western suburbs connection. His father Warren played one senior match for the Footscray Bulldogs in 1981. Warren wore the red white and blue against Collingwood in round two of that year for a 94-point loss. His statistics were eight kicks and two handballs. At 189 centimetres in his playing days, Warren is much shorter than his beanpole son who stands at 204cm (6 foot 8 in the old language). Warren wore jumper number 26. Let’s hope his son has a long career at cricket’s elite level. One game is not something either would want as a family tradition. ■ Werribee Cricket Club first XI is still reeling after being knocked over for 48 last week while chasing a modest 132 set by Balwyn at Chirnside Park. The much-heralded Tigers’ sub-district batting line-up crumbled and now faces the prospect of missing the finals. They’re now eighth on the ladder, needing some good results to figure at the season’s pointy end. Williamstown is on top of the ladder and favourite for the flag. In VTCA, Yarraville Club Cricket Club rolls out Jonathon Brown this Saturday, adding more power to its top-of-the-ladder team. The former Lions AFL skipper is a highly rated cricketer and there will be no shortage of eyes tracking his progress this weekend. ■ The Hoppers Crossing Sports Club will be the venue for a fundraiser for motor neurone disease sufferer Bruce Cronin on Saturday, February 18, from 1 till 4pm. Bruce has been diagnosed with the disease known as ‘the Beast’, which was brought to public attention by fellow sufferer Neale Daniher. The family day has been organised to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for Bruce and other sufferers. Footscray football legend Doug Hawkins will be there to tell a few stories, and there will be auctions, raffles, door prizes and sports memorabilia up for grabs. Come along to show your support.

Clements finds his form By Lance Jenkinson Robbie Clements has been more up and down than a Gold Coast rollercoaster since his return to Keilor in VTCA cricket. Clements could not have envisaged a rockier start to the senior division season, out for ducks in his first four digs back at his home club. Quality batsman that he is, the worm had to turn eventually, so Clements kept his head down, trained hard and eventually changed for the better. Clements peaked with a majestic 130 not-out in Keilor’s first game into the new year, backing up from a 69 not out pre-Christmas. He could not put a finger on why his form has been so streaky. “I haven’t really done much different,” he said. “I suppose I had to re-adjust to a different wicket and playing at a different level. “You get run out and you get a couple of good balls.” Clements is happy his runs are trending up. his return to Keilor, and he is starting to deliver. Clements could not have been more thrilled to break through for a century in his homecoming season. He played all his juniors with Keilor, but left after one senior season to pursue a Premier Cricket career with Footscray Edgewater. The Sydenham resident spent five seasons with the Bulldogs and showed a lot of promise, bouncing between the seconds and thirds. He made 114 against Camberwell in a third XI game last season, but said he just felt the time was right for a return home to Keilor. Though he will never shut the door on playing at a higher level again, Clements said, for 2016-17, he can’t think of a better place to be. “You never know what’s in the future,” he said. “It was interesting seeing what people up the top level do differently, and how you can apply that to your own game. “You’re playing against guys who have played state level cricket and higher. “It was an easy decision to come back to

Keilor. I have a lot of good friends who play at the club and I’ve loved every minute back here. “It’s a great place to be.” Clements could make the difference for Keilor in its premiership quest this season. The Blues have long had a menacing bowling attack, but the batting department undoubtedly needed a makeover. Clements was one of the keys to that. One of the hottest teams in the competition, Keilor has a growing confidence after strong recent form. This has included beating the top-two sides, followed by a one-day win over Doutta Stars on Saturday. “I think there’s a real belief amongst the boys that we can do something special this year, as long as we keep working hard and don’t get ahead of ourselves,” Clements said. “The boys are really concentrating and know what we want to achieve this year.” Keilor will host Tullamarine at the Keilor Recreation Reserve on Saturday in the final one-day before the two-day games return.

Twin centuries were just the tonic for the Crows as they erased the disappointment of the previous week’s loss to Moonee Valley. Opening batsman Aiden Elkington (117) and captain Troy Stone (113) were the catalysts for a much better Crows showing with the bat as they powered to 4-300 off 40 overs to overwhelm the Caroline Springs total of 7-119. Taylors Lakes’ Thai ties tests the local talent

Saints signing sensation By Lance Jenkinson St Albans has pulled off one of the recruiting coups of the summer, landing one-time Costa Rican international Jean Carlos Solorzano. The Saints made a splash in the NPL Victoria transfer market before Christmas, ensuring they would be competitive in Victorian soccer’s top flight, but they clearly had unfinished business, saving their best signing until last. The newly-promoted Saints had a glaring need for an attacking machine, a striker with a long resume of goals in big games, and one with potential to win a match off his own boot. These types of players don’t grow on trees, so the Saints had to cast the net wide before reeling in Solorzano last week. “It’s huge for the club,” Saints’ coach Kruni Razov said. “It does send a message that we want to try and be the real deal. “We don’t just want to survive, even though it is our main priority in our first season. “What it will do is make other teams look at us a little bit differently.” Solorzano has carved out an impressive career in both Costa Rica and Australia. He got his break with Alajuelense in the Primera

Division de Costa Rica, where he made 67 appearances in eight years, returning 21 goals. It was during this period that Solorzano rose from Costa Rica’s under 17s to the 20s, and eventually broke through to the national team, albeit for one appearance in 2012. Solorzano’s form with Alajuelense was enough to convince the Brisbane Roar to sign him on loan for the 2010-11 A-League season. There he played a big role as the Roar’s equal leading goalscorer, with 11 goals in 25 games in a title-winning season. The rest of Solorzano’s A-League career would be riddled with injuries, and included a 14-game loan spell with Melbourne Victory and 36 more games with the Roar, which signed him outright for three years from 2014-16. At his best, Solorzano can match it with most players in the country, so St Albans is hopeful the 29-year-old can find that level to make him a household name among A-League supporters. “If you can play in the A-League and score goals when you’re fit and firing, you’d think you could do it here,” Razov said. “He’s quick, he’s aggressive, he’s direct and he’s a goal scorer. “You can play him out wide, which is a bit of a bonus as well.

“He can play a few roles, but he’s a goal scorer, he’s got a nose for goal.” More recently, Solorzano has played for the Rochedale Rovers in the Brisbane Premier League. A host of offers came his way, but Solorzano decided to make the move to Melbourne to play in one of the strongest NPL league’s in the nation. After a week of talks, the deal was confirmed last week, and the Saints finally got their man. “Every player that we sign, we speak to them as a club, and I speak to them as the coach about where we want to go, what we want to do and how we want to do things,” Razov said. “We’re trying to build something here and make this club stronger, and he was really impressed with it all. “He wanted a challenge, he wanted something different, he’s never been in a position with a club like ours, where we’re really starting from the bottom at this level and trying to create things … that’s what I think enticed him the most.” Solorzano is back in Costa Rica for a week and will report to St Albans training next week. It is not sure if he will be among the Saints for the Cro Cup tournament on January 28-29.

Taylors Lakes Tennis Club has set up ties with Thailand tennis through head coach Matthew Gregory. On Sunday, Taylors Lakes welcomed some of the best young Thailand juniors to play against local up-and-coming players, organised through Gregory’s links with Thailand’s official sporting body. Gregory has worked in high performance and professional tennis with the Sports Authority of Thailand, and is married to WTA top-100 ranked Thai doubles player Varatchaya Wongteanchai. “This is the second time they’ve done it,” Taylors Lakes junior delegate Bobby Dela Cruz said. “They brought 16 kids to Australia, all national champions from the 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s teams, and they came to our club for a hit with our kids. “One of them is a top junior with a world junior ranking of 200.” There are benefits for the juniors of both countries. The Taylors Lakes players test themselves against world class juniors, while the Thailand players travel to play and finish off by taking in some of the action at the Australian Open. “Because they push tennis, they’re able to reward the top juniors,” Dela Cruz said. “Last year, one of the girls (Bianco Compuesto) at our club, she took the Thailand under-14 national champion down to the wire. “Bianca’s a top-ranked junior as well, top 250 in the Australian rankings, and currently with the Maribyrnong (Sports Academy) tennis school.” It’s a busy time of the year for tennis clubs right across the west. The Australian Open and other ATP-WTA events have proven to be great promotions for the game, with numbers usually swelling at this time of the year. Taylors Lakes, part of the North Suburban Junior Tennis Association, has the advantage of quality coaches Gregory and Patrick Henson. “Matt talks really well with the kids … it’s pretty important how a teacher and student connects,” Dela Cruz said. “He’s a level three coach, and there’s only a dozen of them in Australia – and he’s the only one in the NSJTA. “Patrick is from America and his dad is 80 years old and is still coaching in the States, so he grew up on a tennis court.” Lance Jenkinson 49 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 17, 2017
