One formula for success Taylors Lakes teen Nick Schembri has a dream to make it in the fast-paced world of Formula One racing … and he is well on his way to making this dream reality. Schembri, 14, has been racing go karts since he was 10 years old, but this year he is making the step up to the Formula Ford circuit to continue his climb. “I always wanted to go fast as a kid,” Schembri said. “I took it a bit more seriously as a I moved through juniors, and now I’m in Formula Ford, which is hard but still good. The hardest thing was learning manual, but now I’m used to it.” He has done trial laps at Winton Motor Raceway in recent months, and is getting ready to race across the state in 2017. Schembri has been running a raffle at Watergardens shopping centre to raise money for the upcoming season, with his sponsors, Preston Hire and Penrite Oil, donating prizes. Tickets are still available via his Facebook page, Nick Star Racing. “Hopefully, I can do Formula Ford for a few years and then move up a bit before, hopefully, getting to the V8s … then maybe Formula One, eventually,” Schembri said. Sports revamp kicks off By Ewen McRae Ardeer Reserve will get a new $1.3 million soccer pavilion, keeping up with demand for better local sporting facilities. Brimbank council has contracted Melbcon Pty Ltd to demolish the dilapidated old pavilion and build the new one at the home ground of Westgate Football Club. Westgate FC has contributed $150,000 towards the project, with Brimbank council making up the rest of the $1,397,419.91 tender
price. Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said the project is part of a concerted push by the council to boost sporting opportunities. “Sport and recreation are important to our community, and this project will deliver the kind of soccer facility Ardeer needs,” Cr Hedditch said. He said the upgrade had been identified as a priority project in the council’s sports facility development strategy plan for managing and developing Brimbank’s sport and recreation spaces.
The new pavilion will include two change rooms, a social room and associated amenities, an umpires’ room and first aid room, storage and public amenities. Westgate FC president Steve Kunesevic said it had been a long process to get the project up and running, but news of its go-ahead was hugely exciting. “It’s a very important announcement, especially for the division we are in, and the way we want to improve as a club and attract players,” Mr Kunesevic said.

“The old rooms were pretty run down, lots of portables, showers didn’t work etc, so creating a more family friendly environment and a more welcoming place for ladies is what we want to do. “It’s massive for the club, but also the whole community because we want to open the rooms up … so the benefits are endless.” Westgate will play its 2017 season elsewhere as construction takes place, but will still train at Ardeer Reserve. Construction is due to start in February, and end by September/October.

Mind shifts that matter
Recount ‘not on’, tribunal A candidate in last October’s Brimbank council elections has had his request for a recount rejected. Wally Walia appeared at a municipal tribunal in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on December 9 requesting a recount of the Taylors ward result due to the narrowness of his defeat. He finished fourth in the ward by 36 votes. But Mr Walia was informed on December 23 he had been unsuccessful. The tribunal determined that because Mr Walia and his sons were present as scrutineers on the night of the count, and did not notice any irregularities, there was no need for a recount. While disappointed with the decision, Mr Walia has decided not to pursue the matter further. “I’m very disappointed, but after numerous discussions with my family, I have decided not to take it further,” Mr Walia said. “That’s life unfortunately, and that’s politics. “I had lots of support from the community to go further, but it was taking up all my time, and would also have required hiring a barrister … I’m not that rich. “I wish the new council all the best of luck and, hopefully, they do the right thing for the voters and the ratepayers.” Mr Walia said he will likely contest the next council elections in four years’ time. “I’ve been in this area for 32 years, so I’m not going anywhere.”

Caroline Springs’ Charlene Crawford is stepping into 2017 as a new woman. Ms Crawford (pictured) has lost 93 kilograms and turned her life around, opening her life up to possibilities about which she could previously only dream. At her heaviest, 199kg, Ms Crawford, 28, said a dire warning from her doctor in 2014 prompted her to take action. “My doctor basically told me if I didn’t do something, I’d probably be dead in two years,” Ms Crawford said. “I’d struggled with my weight since I was young, and friends had always told me to have surgery, but I wasn’t in the right mind set. That doctor visit changed that.” After waiting a year for gastric sleeve surgery, Ms Crawford dropped 20 dress sizes from August 2015 until the end of last year. “I was losing 6kg a week at the start, and that gradually slowed down over time,” she said. “I’ve totally changed my ways. I got a personal trainer, I go to the gym, I do Zumba, I go for a walk every night. I used to stay inside all day, now I’m out doing all the things I’m meant to be doing. “I look at food differently now. It’s fuel for your body, not the comfort food it used to be. It’s been an emotional roller-coaster, but I’m a completely changed person now. “It’s all the little things, like sitting on a chair with arms, or going out for a meal and not having people stare. It really has changed my life.” And in the season of new year’s resolutions, what advice does she have for others who may be battling the bulge? “Never give up,” she said. “If I can do it, anyone can. My doctors are so proud of me, and I’m proud of myself for making the change.”

When Zech and Eze Walters crossed paths with Bowen Purcell, the boys quickly realised they had plenty in common. The Walters brothers had recently moved to the northern Victorian town of Yarrawonga, just south of the New South Wales border, from New Zealand with their parents, Keith and Peka, who had shifted the family to start a church in the town. Bowen, a Yarrawonga local, became an active member of the new parish the Walters called Ignite Life Church, and the three boys soon discovered a shared passion for their faith, and for music. They formed their band, Woodlock, and quickly found success, performing shows

Pokies stifle playground bid By Ewen McRae St Albans Sports Club’s application to build an indoor children’s playground has been rejected by Brimbank council because of its proximity to the club’s gambling venue. The club’s proposal to extend its function room and build a 33 square metre playground was the result of concerns that the existing outdoor playground was too close to a car park and busy roads. In its submission, the club stated the
existing outdoor playground, which cannot be seen from the neighbouring oval or from inside the sports club, was not ideally placed for families involved in sporting activities or those attending functions. At its last meeting of 2016, Brimbank council determined that the internal playground would contravene its electronic gambling policy (EGP), as the sports club operates on land leased from the council. In a report to councillors, officers cited concerns about increasing exposure to
gambling for families using the playground, normalising gambling among children, increasing the length of time parents spend gambling, and creating perceptions that council supports exposing children and young people to gambling. The report stated that Brimbank has the highest level of losses on electronic gaming machines of any municipality in Victoria, with more than $143 million poured into pokies in 2015-16. The council’s EGP commits it to an objective
of “harm minimisation”, under which “prevention and early intervention strategies are the most effective approach to reducing the harmful impacts of electronic gambling”. The report, backed by councillors, also overruled safety concerns about the existing outdoor playground, which was upgraded in 2008-09. According to the officers’ report, the current playground complies with all safety standards and no public complaints had been received by the council in relation to it.
Club loves a family vibe About 200 members of the St Bernadette’s Senior’s Club will celebrate the group’s silver anniversary next month. Treasurer Valerie Buttigieg said the Sunshine North club was all about keeping people happy by bringing them together. “A lot of men and women who have lost their partners come,” she said. “It’s like an extended family, I would say.” The club was founded in 1992 as the Maltese St Bernadette’s Club, and at its peak, had more than 400 members. “Our current president, Alfred Zahra, who was then vice-president, together with six others parishioners … formed the club under the umbrella of the church towards the end of 1991, but they had their first official meeting in February, 1992,” Ms Buttigieg said. Members continue to meet each week for bingo and monthly for outings that can vary from strawberry picking to trips out of town.
To celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary, it has a dinner and show planned for February 11 at St Bernadette’s Community Centre in Cooke Avenue, Sunshine North. Enough! Road warrior calls a halt By Goya Dmytryshchak It was a fatal crash that sent shockwaves through the community. On October 24, 2016 a car driven by 15-year-old Newport boy Luke Lee crashed in West Sunshine, killing him and injuring his four passengers aged 13-17. One of them, 15-year-old Billie Lea Harris, of Doreen, wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was left facing 12 months of treatment. A crowdfunding page has been set up for her in a bid to raise $50,000. It’s teenagers like these that the Fit2Drive program is trying to reach and influence. Leigh Hardinge is president of the Fit2Drive Foundation which holds peer-led workshops for year 11 students and other programs for people aged 16-25. The program started with 18 schools in 2000 and now has more than 150 participating. Mr Hardinge, an SES founding member who has seen the aftermathofhundredsofcrashes,said there was no judgement or scare tactics, just facts to get young people thinking about their choices. “A lot of people get wrapped up in the road toll,” he said. “The toll is a tragic situation, but people very very rarely talk about very serious injuries where people are either maimed or have acquired brain injury for the rest of their lives. “It’s terrible; you’re going to have to have carers for the rest of your life. “It must be an awful shock, particularly if they still have reasonable thoughts and mind function, but mechanically they’re locked in a wheelchair. “And these are the things we try to share. We don’t believe in traumatising youngsters as to what can be the end result.

“We try to share with them scenarios that are based on fact.” Mr Hardinge said one of the biggest contributors to road trauma among young people was distraction. “Whether it be texting, whether it be mobile phone conversations, whether it be conversations within the car, with all the other

Disco dazzle for Melton After a 15-year hiatus, Melton’s Blue Light Disco returned last month – so successfully, police have decided to host the much-loved event bi-monthly. Acting Sergeant Rob Dampier said members were looking forward to busting out their dance moves with the town’s youngsters more often. “The Blue Light Disco gives young people somewhere to go in a safe environment [and] allows for safe and pleasant interactions with police,” he said. “They see we’re human and that we’re not the ogres they sometimes perceive us to be. The feedback from everyone was that it was a roaring success.”
About 60 children, aged between seven and 12, attended the disco at the Gap on Graham. Acting Sergeant Dampier said they’re hoping for bigger turnouts in the year ahead. The next Blue Light Disco, for children aged seven-12, will be held on Friday, February 10, from 6-8pm, at the Gap on Graham, 5 Graham Street, Melton. Entry costs $5. Briefs Chopper spots speedster
A 31-year-old man’s motorbike has been impounded after he was spotted by Airwing members driving at more than 150km/h along Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West about 1am on January 4. Police were directed to a Kynoch Lane address in Maribyrnong, where a man was arrested and his bike was impounded. The Malvern East man was charged and bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court next month.
Armed robbery
Police are searching for a man who produced a knife during a robbery at Watergardens railway station on Thursday, September 8, last year. The victim was approached by a man asking for money. When the victim declined, the man produced a knife. The victim was targeted again by the same man demanding money on Thursday, September 15. The victim handed over a small amount of cash and the offender left. He is perceived to be in his early 40s, with an olive complexion and a scruffy black-grey beard. Hunt for missing teen
Police are appealing for help to locate 18-year-old woman April Skelton, who was last seen at a Taylors Lakes shopping centre at the intersection of Kings Road and the Melton Highway on December 12. There are concerns for April’s welfare due to a medical condition. April is described as about 155cm tall, with a thin build, fair complexion and brown eyes. She is believed to have shoulder-length bleached
blonde hair, and is known to frequent the Ballarat, Keilor, Sunshine and Sunbury areas. Anyone with information about April is asked to contact Ballarat Police Station on 5336 6000.
Burglary investigated
Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a burglary at a supermarket at the corner of The Avenue and Corella Road in Sunshine West last week. Investigators were told three men went to the supermarket in a silver-grey Nissan Patrol 4WD about 1.40am on December 31 wearing masks and gloves. One used a concrete-cutter to open the front roller door, then used it to cut open a cigarette cabinet. The men fled with a plastic bag filled with cigarettes and pre-paid mobile phones.

Kings Park road rage
Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for witnesses after a 22-year-old man was assaulted in Kings Park on January 2. A man travelling north in a dark-coloured vehicle rammed the victim’s vehicle, forcing it off Kings Road about 10.45am. The man then approached the victim and sprayed him with a fire extinguisher before assaulting him with a Stanley knife. The victim was able to drive away, but received a chest wound. Call to stop drip-fed support

The yearly struggle to attract the federal funds that can help address homelessness must cease, a Footscray-based service tackling family violence has written. Women’s Health West is one of 209 organisations to sign an open letter, calling on prime minister Malcolm Turnbull to save key homelessness services from funding cuts by extending the federal government’s commitment to the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness (NPAH). “Cuts to the NPAH will withdraw support from some of the most vulnerable people in our community,” the letter stated. “We will see more people living on the streets of our cities and towns, more women facing family violence and sexual assault alone, fewer young people going to school, higher unemployment, more admissions to emergency departments, and the loss of lives that we can save.” The Turnbull government announced recently it would deliver $117.2 million in NPAH funding, but fell short of committing to longer-term support. Responding to the one-year funding announcement, Women’s Health West chief executive Robyn Gregory said family violence and related homelessness require a much longer term solution. “One year of funding does not enable us to plan and implement long term strategies for preventing family violence-related homelessness,” she said.

Eastern barred bandicoots are extinct in the wild, but there are a number of the small, nocturnal marsupials in captivity … and one very large one, measuring some 20 metres in length, can be found in grassland at Cairnlea. Friends of Iramoo, a group of volunteers, banded together about 20 years ago, starting a 30-year project aimed at restoring some 40 hectares of grassland at Cairnlea known as the Iramoo wildflower grassland reserve. Their plan was unique … what they needed to do was eradicate the serrated tussock and Chilean needle grass that had infested these once bountiful volcanic plains and replant native wildflowers. They commissioned local artists to sculpt endangered marsupials using scrap tin – sourced sustainably from the Albion Eco-Living Centre, of course – and erected these on top of the piles of weeds. The science was simple … the sculptures were left in place for two summers, during which time whatever lay underneath was smothered, baked and sterilised. Friends of Iramoo secretary Amanda Dodd said once a metal marsupial was lifted and moved to another spot, the burnt soil beneath was planted with natives lemon beauty heads and common everlasting. “This year, he’ll jump again,” she said, referring to the group’s giant tin bandicoot. “Every two years, we pick him up and move him … so, by the time the bandicoot reaches the other end, the reserve will be restored with wildflowers.” The council worker and ecology graduate said their project was unusual in that it took such a long-term approach. “It’s taken 200-plus years of European colonisation to damage it, so it’s going to take us a long time to get it back.”

Sunshine Council will adopt a get-tough policy this year with ratepayers who are behind with their rates and outstanding private street construction accounts, writes Jim Bruce. Arrears in rates and private street construction accounts are estimated to be in the region of $400,000.
Sunshine Council has not honoured a pledge to maintain the Kororoit Creek land between Glengala and Billingham Roads, the Board of Works alleged last month. The Board secretary, Mr R Engleman, said the Board spent $300,000 on creek work, including extensive tree planting on a council undertaking to maintain the area.
Sunshine and Avondale Heights residents have been angered by plans to establish a tip in the Boral Quarry, alongside the Maribyrnong River. H.J Wasselowski Plant Hire Pty Ltd has applied to the Environmental Protection Authority to use 7.2 hectares of the quarry site in Sunshine for the dumping of building material.
Brimbank Council has given the St Albans ambulance service a “period of grace” to find a new base. Brimbank has agreed to help the St Albans branch look for a new base before it moves from the corner of Sunshine Avenue and Calverton Road, Kealba.

Count us among those who see the Indian food flowering in West Footscray as something quite fabulous – absolutely worth celebrating. We have our favourite food there, and favourite places, depending on our whim of the moment. One thing we do look for is a point of difference … and Tiwari Tea House has that in spades. While other Barkly Street eateries feature chaat – savoury Indian snack-type dishes – this place does nothing but … And the food is all vegetarian. Four of us get into the menu and come away happy … and perhaps even refreshed after eating snacky things so devoid of the heavy spicing and meatiness we often enjoy hereabouts. As the name makes clear, this place is also much about tea – so we go with that flow. Bennie and I have the masala chai ($9.95 for two), while our pals Julian and Christine have black ginger tea. It seems rather pricey for a couple of cups of chai. No matter – we enjoy all our food, and love some of it a lot. Big hits are our vada pavs ($6.95 each). Looking like tall, chubby burgers, these are bread buns stuffed with wonderful potato patties. The potato is heavily infused with turmeric, but otherwise mildly seasoned. I have done many a sausage sizzle and barbecue with the great man over the years and I can vouch for his love and passion for steak and snags. If the Olympics held sausage eating as a sport, Merv would be a podium finisher every four years. Curtis Stone is a western suburbs boy, so he and Merv got on famously. Curtis played under-age footy for Kensington and made a WRFL representative side in his day.

Cavs quick to plug gaps By Lance Jenkinson Green Gully has not sat on its hands in this NPL football off season. The Cavaliers are hellbent on improving on their straight sets finals exit last year and have been aggressive players in the transfer market. Time moves fast for clubs in the Victorian top flight and the Cavs needed to keep up or risk stagnating. The likes of Liam Boland, a hero of Green Gully’s FFA Cup run last season, and Rodrigo Vargas, a revered stalwart, will not be in the green and white in 2017, but a host of exciting new signings should appease the Cavaliers’ fan base. Boland moved to Hume City after the Cavs did not match their sizeable contract offer, while Vargas will call the Dandenong Thunder home after being released. Vargas, a former Socceroo who played at the highest level with Melbourne Knights and
Melbourne Victory, strung together 150 games for Green Gully. “He’s been a great servant to the club,” Cavaliers general manager Raymond Mamo said. “He’s a great guy, Roddy. I’ve got a lot of time for him and the club holds him in high regard.” Green Gully could not afford to stand still after losing that calibre of player. The Cavaliers got their business done early and have most of their squad bedded down in readiness for their season opener against Bentleigh Greens on February 10. “I think we’re nearly done now,” Mamo said. “I can’t really say what’s going to happen in the next couple of weeks, but at the moment the coaching staff are quite satisfied with the signings and the club is excited as well.” One of Green Gully’s biggest issues last season was its depth. The Cavaliers enjoyed a deep FFA Cup run, but as the fixtures piled up, so did the injuries
and they were not prepared as well as they could have been. “The depth was an issue for us last year,” Mamo said. “You can’t help players being injured or suspended, but you need to have replacements for them. “We lost Matthew Breeze 60 minutes into the first league game and he was gone for the whole season. Nick Krousoratis was injured as well. “It’s always hard to replace these talented players, but you’ve got to have a back-up as well. “I think we’ve done that this year.” Green Gully had already brought in Jonathan Bounas, Josh Brindell-South, Sami Nour, Alex Caniglia, Jeremy Walker and Josh Barresi in the lead-up to Christmas before announcing the signing of Wade Dekker last week, a forward with A-League experience with Melbourne City. “We have made some really good signings,” Mamo said.

David’s mother, Althea, lived with severe dementia for the last 10 years of her life, and seeing this caused David to review how he wanted to live his life. The ride took him across China, central Asia and to many other parts of the world in his trek of more than 20,000 kilometres. He reached the finish line last Sunday. David intends to return to golf and find a job in the industry in the coming weeks.

Jarry is better known these days as father of Australian Opals star Rachel, but the Altona local received a fitting acknowledgement of his own sports prowess recently. Graham went to the MCG during the Boxing Day Test to receive Cricket Victoria’s Outstanding Volunteer Award. Graham has been involved with the Yarraville Cricket Club for more than 35 years, serving as a player, scorer, coach, administrator, secretary (15 years) and president (six years). He was also on the VSDCA executive for five years. Graham is typical of those selfless people who do it for the love of the club. Sport would be lost without them.

Lions show one-day form By Lance Jenkinson Taylors Lakes produced another masterful one-day performance in sub-district cricket. The Lions have taken four wins from five matches in the short format, dismantling Melton by seven wickets on the road at MacPherson Park on Saturday. Lions’ coach Kris McMullin must wish all games were one-day affairs – that’s where most of the wins have come as his side roars back into the top six in its inaugural season at this level. “It was a commanding performance against a quality opposition,” McMullin said. “Our one-day form stacks up, but if we want to play finals, we’ve got to start performing in the two-day cricket as well. “That starts this week against top side Williamstown. There’s no better challenge for the guys against the top side.” With victories over finals’ contenders on either side of the mid-season break, Taylors Lakes is showing it has the “stickability” to be in the finals race. There are fewer tougher away venues in the league than Melton, so for the Lions to go in and bully a top-four side sends the message it may be part of the finals’ conversation. But McMullin was not looking too far ahead, preferring to reserve judgment until after a tough January of competition, which concludes with consecutive games against top-two outfits Williamstown and Balwyn. “Our first three games after Christmas are going to really tell a story as to where we go this year,” McMullin said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the boys; they’re meeting every challenge head on and they’re really enjoying playing this standard of cricket. “We’ve put ourselves in a position where we can play finals. That’s the aim from here.” Taylors Lakes set up victory with the ball, rolling Melton for just 81. Lions’ medium pacers Yoshan Kumara (2-19) and Mark McLachlan (3-17) caused uncertainty among Melton’s top order, but it was spinner Jarrod Wakeling who broke the game open for the visitors, taking 4-11 off nine miserly overs. Wakeling has taken four wickets on three occasions this summer to have 13 wickets at 10.9. “He’s a quality bowler,” McMullin said. “Whenever we’re in a bit of trouble, we generally go to him. He can not only tie down an end, but he’s got wicket balls as well. “Along with [Dilan] Chandima, those two spin options have been critical for us this year.” Taylors Lakes cruised to the target three down in just 17.2 overs. Captain Michael Brne (17) and Chandima (23) gave the Lions a good start before Mohammad Khan impressed in his late call, up from the second XI with 22 not out. “It’s his job now to hold his spot for the rest of the year,” McMullin said of Khan.

Batsman back to form with a vengeance Robert Clements out-scored Airport West-St Christophers off his own bat in the VTCA senior division at Etzel Street Reserve on Saturday. That’s how dominant Keilor’s returning home-grown opener was in the slaughter of the West Saints. Clements raised his bat for 130 not out, while the entire West Saints team was skittled for just 100 on the same wicket. “It was a well-put-together innings that he built up,” Keilor coach Sean McManus said. “He played some really good cricket shots; it was almost a chanceless innings.” Clements was brought back to Keilor to make runs – and plenty of them. It hasn’t always gone to plan for the former Footscray Edgewater player, though. Four consecutive ducks must have rattled Clements’ confidence, but it all turned around on Christmas eve. He made 69 not out in a big one-day win over Spotswood and took that form into the new year with a stellar first-up performance. Keilor needed only three batsmen to complete the rout. The Blues powered to 1-181 from their 40 overs, a great sign for a side that has often viewed batting as its weakest point. Nathan Beever (20) and Daniel Stavris (27 not out) played the support acts for Clements and in return had the best seat in the house for the memorable knock. “To see the top order fire is really pleasing,” McManus said. “We’ve got a really good bowling attack; we pride ourselves on that so, for me, the bigger satisfaction is that we scored quickly and lost only one wicket for our 40 overs. To go on and win in a convincing fashion was pleasing.” Keilor’s bowlers refused to be overshadowed. The Blues hit the right spots with the ball and were backed up by an enthusiastic and focused field. Dan Schuppan, Chris Lee, Kaushal Lokuarachchi and Upal Bandara took two wickets apiece, while Luke Delbridge was outstanding in the field with a catch and two run outs. A meeting during the week set the tone for a flawless Keilor team effort. “The boys had a chat on Thursday night,” McManus said. “Last season, the first game after Christmas, it just didn’t go to plan and they weren’t switched on, so they were very mindful of that in the first game back after Christmas this year.”

The first hour of the new year looked promising for Sunshine Heights in the VTCA north-west B1. The next five hours were a disaster. The Heights got off to a flyer by having West Newport at 4-23. Instead of tapping out, Wests fought back, recovering from a precarious position to blast 6-230, with middle-order batsmen Josh Eason-Jones (82) and Josh Macdonald (81no) combining for a game-changing 143-run sixth-wicket partnership. Akon Mawien fought hard with the ball for the Heights, taking 2-31 off eight overs in oppressive heat. His new ball partner, Simon Charlton, battled to take 2-43, but there was no joy thereafter, with Wests taking a liking to the Heights change bowlers. Sunshine Heights started its batting as it had with the ball – full of promise.

The removal of both openers sparked a dramatic batting collapse for the Heights, with the final eight wickets tumbling for 72 runs. In north A1, Sunshine YCW consolidated its spot in the top four with a commanding 52-run win over Roxburgh Park, led by a firecracker 72 not out from Joel Evans and a season-best 5-37 from Mark Schwartz. Sydenham-Hillside was lacklustre in a 37-run loss to Jacana, while Sunshine suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of ladder leader Moonee Valley.
