Get hip to holiday fun The new year kicked off in Sunshine to the rap of hip hop last Friday as participants in Brimbank council’s B-active@Pollard program loosened up under instruction by Limbs 2 Riddims (L2R) trainers. Service cuts to continue By Ben Cameron Brimbank council will make deeper cuts to its next budget than first thought after administrators voted not to put up rates beyond the new state government-imposed limit. The state government announced on December 31 that all future rate rises must be in line with the CPI. The council did not apply for a higher cap from the Essential Services Commission (ESC), citing “short timeframes and the required consultative processes” as reasons.
Star Weekly revealed last September that the council believed the introduction of rate capping would cost it almost $30 million over the next five years. In its submission to the ESC’s draft Blueprint for Change last August, the council said capping rates would have a negative cash impact of $29 million by 2020-21, requiring “service-level changes” in the municipality. The council trimmed $1.9 million from last year’s budget in preparation for rate capping, reducing community events and tree planting. Council services will now be “assessed for

further review”, a recent council report stated. “The 2016-17 annual budget process will need to identify savings over and above those previously identified,” the report added. The council was unable to detail exactly how much it would be forced to trim from its next budget because key financial personnel were on holidays. Municipal Association of Victoria president Bill McArthur said the cap might seem like a win for ratepayers, but it could still deliver a “sting in the tail” in future. “The councils hardest hit by the cap will be those that can least

Council endorsed the Draft Keilor Village Concept Plan at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 8 December 2015 and has begun community consultation, which will be followed by a report detailing the outcomes. Consultation is open to the general public with written submissions accepted until Friday 12 February. The community will play a vital role in achieving the best possible design outcomes for the Concept Plan and ultimately the village.
The Draft Concept Plan aspires to maintain and enhance Keilor Village’s rich character and history, while creating an attractive and sustainable community to live in. The plan has outlined three priority areas that once improved will increase the liveability, sustainability and visit-ability of the Town Centre. These include the main shopping strip in the village, bus bay upgrades and a new shared cycling path that runs along the southern side of the Old Calder Highway. When you separate your green waste for Council collection, it’s turned into garden products including potting mix, mulch, and compost. This helps reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Brimbank Council offers green waste collection once a fortnight on the same day as your garbage. Green waste bins have a bright green lid and come in two different sizes. Council provides green waste bins for an annual fee, 140 litres ($111.45 per bin per year); or 240 litres ($122.45 per bin per year). Consider composting your green waste or using a worm farm. Both break down organic waste, create nutrients to help your garden grow and help reduce your garbage bin waste. Compost bins and worm farms can be purchased through Council. Brimbank in drug crime limelight By Ben Cameron and Samantha Walker Brimbank is Victoria’s top hotspot for drug crime, according to the latest crime statistics. The region tops the state for drug dealing and trafficking, with 350 offences recorded in the year to September 30 last year. It also had the most offences under the category of ‘manufacture of drugs’, with 135 offences recorded, according to annual Crime Statistics Agency figures recently released. Both crimes increased in the past four years, from 153 and 69 respectively. Brimbank rated second in the state for drug use and possession (1066 offences recorded) – a crime that more than doubled in the past

four years. Weapons and explosives offences in Brimbank also more than doubled in the past four years, from 340 to 773, ranking second in the state behind Hume (860) at the end of September. Brimbank also had the second-highest number of murders with 11, behind Wyndham’s 12, while breaches of justice orders (880 to 1828) also more than doubled in the past four years.
Despite a 5.6 per cent increase in overall crime in Brimbank in the year to September 30, there were decreases in incidents of theft, burglary/break-and-enter and property damage. Sunshine police’s Inspector Dave Byrt believes Brimbank is a safer place to live than four years ago and that an increase of reported drug crime is a reflection of proactive policing. “These are detected offences, not reported offences, which is a direct indication of the work we’ve done in the proactive detection of crime,” he said. “Like weapons and explosives, it’s a detected offence, which is a direct reflection of police activity.”
He said the drug crime increase was “a double-edged sword”. “It’s pleasing but also concerning,” he said. “Ice is our main concern because of the flow-on impact.” Meanwhile, Brimbank drivers featured heavily among those caught in unregistered vehicles, driving disqualified and driving above the legal blood-alcohol limit across the north-west during a 22-day statewide police operation from December 13. In Brimbank, Operation Roadwise caught 29 drink-drivers, 34 disqualified drivers, 39 unlicensed drivers, 120 speeding drivers, 40 not wearing seatbelts, 27 drivers using mobile phones, and 127 driving unregistered vehicles.

A stabbing at Sunshine last Thursday afternoon left two women with life threatening injuries and a man in a serious condition in hospital. The women, aged 37 and 65, and a 34-year-old man underwent surgery for “significant stab wounds” following the incident just before 4pm at a residence in Braim Street. The 37-year-old was in a stable condition and the 65-year-old in a stable condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital yesterday. The 34-year-old was at the Alfred hospital in a serious condition. Another man, 29, was under police guard at the Alfred on Friday. He was treated for minor injuries. Acting Inspector Cam Reinke said all four people knew each other, although details of the incident were still unclear. “It’s very worrying for a community,” he said. Police have interviewed a number of witnesses. Neighbour Tony Sant told Fairfax Media he believed they had been living in the Braim Street property for about two years. “They have been doing a lot of renovation,” Mr Sant said. Ben Cameron

Teens face burglary charges

Police swooped on nine teenagers allegedly responsible for causing havoc at several childcare centres in Caroline Springs late last month. Seven males and two females aged between 16 and 18 years were caught allegedly causing damage to the Penguin Childcare Centre on Sunday, December 27. Detective Sergeant Rob Henley, of the Melton Crime Investigation Unit, said neighbours were on high alert after the centre was vandalised and broken into multiple times during the past year. Drugs and alcohol were not involved, police say. The teenagers have been charged with criminal damage, burglary and theft, and will appear at court at a later date

An elderly East Keilor man and his dog were rescued from their sinking tinny off Altona beach last Wednesday morning. Police said the 75-year-old got into trouble about a kilometre from shore about 6.30am. Altona Life Saving Club volunteers saw the capsized boat and rushed to help. Lifesaver Aaron Hunt said the man had been plucked from the water by local fishermen when his crew pulled alongside the upturned vessel. Water Police sent to recover the boat found the man’s dog alive, presumably surviving in an air pocket under the bow. Movies by moonlight is one option coming out of community consultation on future uses of the former Sunvale Primary School site in Sunshine. A basketball half-court, table tennis, a kitchen garden, a playground and a Sunvale history-themed, privately-run cafe are other ideas put forward in a Brimbank council preliminary masterplan for the site. The council bought a 1.1 hectare section of the site last March for $3.025 million.

Most residents surveyed want it to be used for ball games, or a skate park, with general open space for jogging, walking and cycling. Residents also suggested it could be used as a community hub, bringing people together for
moonlight movies, markets and festivals, plus an indigenous-themed shared nature trail. Save Sunvale member John Hedditch said many of the ideas had merit, but not all could be implemented. “The moonlight cinema is a great idea,” he said. “I would like to see a large swathe of open space retained, with more trees, native grasses and granitic paths. “And educational resources highlighting the original indigenous owners of the land and their use of the flora and fauna in the area,” he said.
The state government has been in negotiations with a developer to buy back a separate section of the school land after a proposed 60-unit residential development was rejected by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal late last year. The Environment Protection Authority revealed during the VCAT hearing that groundwater at the site was contaminated. Council’s city development director Stuart Menzies said there was no requirement for an environmental audit of the area proposed for a public park.
The popular St Albans Lunar New Year Festival was enhanced by new attractions as at least 50,000 people poured into Alfrieda Street on Sunday for festivities, entertainment, rides and fantastic food. Organiser Ross Morfea said a Vietnamese singer from the US and vintage cars were stand-outs as thousands descended on St Albans. “We seem to be getting lots of different nationalities coming down these days, which is a great sign,” he said. “Our fireworks also went to another level this year. Everything went well despite the construction happening at the St Albans level crossing.”

Jail for addicts who beat passerby By Ben Cameron Two drug addicts have been jailed for imprisoning and beating a man at Braybrook. Irko Abdala, 30, and Kim Janes, 38, were sentenced to 12 months and four months jail respectively, for intentionally causing injury to Ranjip Singh after falsely imprisoning him in a Melton Street residence on December 5, 2014. A sentencing hearing last month heard that Singh was grabbed by what he described as ‘‘a black man” and pushed into the unit while he
was walking along Melton Street about 8pm. He said he was pushed to the ground in the bathroom, and kicked and punched by the man and another person he described as “a thin white woman”. Singh said both were armed with knives. He said he was stripped of his clothes and had a gold neck chain and wallet taken. He also claimed to have been hit repeatedly over the head with a shovel by the woman. Singh was allowed to leave about 9pm. He said he went to a nearby house on Melton Street
where the occupant, a nurse, treated him for lacerations to his head, wrist and chest. Abdala and Janes were arrested three days later. Judge Hampel said the jury did not accept Janes’ testimony at an earlier trial that the incident began after Singh came to the unit looking for a sex worker. “I treat this … as an unplanned, opportunistic, spontaneous and apparently motiveless attack of some viciousness, which fortunately did not result in serious harm to
Mr Singh,” he said. “And a relatively short, but no doubt terrifying, deprivation of liberty of a drunk and vulnerable man in unfamiliar surroundings. “Each of you was caught up in a cycle of drug abuse over the time of the offending. Whilst that is no mitigator, it may explain why this otherwise apparently motiveless attack occurred.” Abdala and Janes will also serve community corrections orders of 12 months and 20 months respectively.

Fifty cries for help, every day By Sumeyya Ilanbey More than 250 calls for help came in to Women’s Health West from domestic violence victims and via police referrals in the first five days of this year. That’s 50 calls a day and more than two calls every hour. And Women’s Health West (WHW) family violence services manager Jacky Tucker expects the number to grow to more than 1000 police referrals and 500 women calling for help by the end of this month.
While January is the organisation’s peak month, 1500 calls would be unprecedented, putting pressure on already-stretched staff and services to keep up with demand. Last January, the organisation received 771 police referrals and 371 calls from domestic violence victims. “In the lead-up to Christmas, you’ve used a lot of money, the kids are around, everything’s heightened, people are together, so there’s a lot more tension,” Ms Tucker said. “Violence … is more than likely to happen during this time of the year. It’s nearly a
guarantee that perpetrators will perpetrate during Christmas.” During December, WHW received 974 police referrals and 447 calls from women experiencing domestic violence. Ms Tucker said the trend of increased calls and demands for services during December and January would continue. “To even try to make a first phone call to the 974 women is extremely hard,” Ms Tucker said. “We’re still responding to incidents from December in January. “We’re just trying to catch up with the
backlog and at least be able to speak to the women and offer them support.” While she said increased reporting of domestic violence was a “good thing” as victims were feeling more confident to speak to authorities, Ms Tucker said it was now “evident how endemic family violence is in our community”. There needs to be generational change, a 30-year-plan to tackle domestic violence, and more funding, Ms Tucker said. She hopes the state government will respond quickly to the Royal Commission into Family Violence.
Couple’s life still a ball It started with a fight over a ball in a German pool, but more than 60 years later, Heinz and Helen Elsen are still going strong in Ardeer. Fate stepped in on July 22, 1951, in Leverkusen, where Helen was playing with a girlfriend in the water. Then Heinz and his friends appeared. “He got my ball and I asked for it back,” she remembered. “Soon we had moved our blankets together.” A two-year courtship followed (“things were a lot different in those days”) before the couple, armed with a two-year immigration contract, moved to Australia on October 28, 1955. “Heinz wanted to see Australia so off we went,” Helen said. “It was the best decision we ever made. Australia is such a free country.” The couple married two months later (December 31) in a Nissen hut in Ardeer as the local church was still being built.
Heinz was a fitter and turner, while Helen worked in several factories across the west before settling down to have four children – two boys and two girls – while six grandchildren and two great grandchildren followed. Helen says the secret to a long marriage is “give and take – nothing more”. “Not many marriages have made it this far,” she says. “Hopefully, we’ve got a few years to go. “Some marriages break up because the woman goes home to her mother. “It was a bit hard for me as she was thousands of kilometres away in Germany,” Helen adds with a laugh. MY BRIMBANK GO Festival founder Susan Dibbs talks to Ben Cameron about the growth of the annual event recognising women in the community, her teenage years in Brimbank, and life as a single mum. W your Christmas and New Year busy? Was I worked right through. It’s (GO Festival) coming up in a few weeks, so it’s all systems go. I don’t really sleep much a week or so before the expo.
There was nothing here. I’ve seen it grow over the past 20 to 30 years; it’s been amazing. I wasn’t a big fan at first, but now I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Any particular places you like to visit? Brimbank Park, Green Gully Reserve; it’s a wonderful place to relax.
Is GO Festival a full-time job? This is my flagship expo; I work full-time with an event manager. Last year I worked on some other events also, but GO Festival is my big baby.
What motivates you in your work? It comes from a desire to not have the normal nine-to-five job, to be a bit different, something flexible to suit my lifestyle. It’s just my passion to hold events, and I love challenges as well.
When did the idea first pop into your head? I started working on it in 2012. I was actually planning to get back into events because I used to plan wedding expos before my child was born. I wanted to do something new. I was actually working on a completely different event, then it (GO Festival) came to me. It was my experience at the time, being a mum and meeting other mums and seeing how we all work, getting to know women in business. Raising a child alone, what kind of sacrifices have you had to make? There is no social life anymore (laughs). They are the sacrifices you make when you have a baby, not just when you run a business. I probably gave it all up then. But the festival gets me out and about and meeting women. Do you treat yourself to a break afterwards? I usually start work on the next one; I’m a workaholic (laughs). I am, I confess.
Must have been a busy time; what was your secret? I got out there and met some amazing women. I’m always astounded at how well women can work together, to grow together. I’m very passionate about it. It was huge (starting the festival up); it was a really hot summer and, in school holidays, my son was always curious about who I was talking to on the phone. It was a crazy time, but I kind of enjoy a bit of crazy, that’s fine (laughs).
Was it hard moving to Brimbank at 13? Coming from England, it was a bit of a shock.
This year’s Go Festival will be held on February 6 and 7 at Melbourne Showgrounds

What’s been your biggest challenge? Probably becoming a single mum, and the second one would be organising GO Festival. I was a single mum living in a bubble when it started. I had to start from scratch and make connections. It was very challenging from the first event, and I had no budget.

Creche closure fears By Ben Cameron A community group fears it will lose the Sunshine Leisure Centre crèche, following a decision by Brimbank council late last year to close the centre’s cafe. The council will close the cafe on March 24 due to dwindling profits, despite a petition with 103 signatures calling for its retention. “Despite denials from council, we also feel this type of cut to the facility may be a stepping stone to closing the creche at the pool,” a Save Sunshine Pool (SSP) spokesperson said.
“We must not accept diminished facilities for our community.” The group has asked if the council had called for tenders to run the canteen, and if trimming spending on entertainment, food and alcohol would keep it open. Council’s community wellbeing director Kath Brackett said the cafe had been losing more than $75,000 annually since 2011-12. The council will investigate the possibility of using food trucks at the centre next summer. As it stands, the cafe will be replaced with basic tea and coffee facilities.
SSP group members say, with Brimbank’s high rates of diabetes, the decision to close the cafe is wrong. Diabetes Australia’s Victoria Diabetes Epidemic Report of 2011 found nearly one in five Brimbank residents aged 55 years or more has diabetes. “What happens if, after strenuous exercise, one of these people finds themselves desperate for some food to prevent falling into trouble?” a SSP spokesperson asked. Ms Brackett said the money saved by closing the cafe could be “redirected into other council services to benefit the community”.

Brimbank pet owners are reminded to keep their animals cool this summer, and don’t spare the ice cubes. With hot weather ahead, PETstock Taylors Lakes store manager David Munn stresses that people should be aware of the risks to their pets. David says it is important to make sure cool, clean water is available all day, and to never leave pets in cars. Keep an eye out for dangerous conditions, such as dehydration and heat stroke, he warns. “When possible, bring your pet inside to escape the heat; always ensure your pet’s water bowls remain full, and add ice cubes on warmer days to keep the water cooler for longer, or freeze some treats,” he says. “You can even try freezing watermelon, apple or cucumber for a tasty snack.”

Sunshine council has called the bluff of McGrath Quarry. The council has refused to support quarrying despite two ultimatums from the company. A letter obtained by The Advocate suggested that McGrath “threatened to develop all their land for industry” if the quarry was not allowed to re-open.
Brimbank residents are among the worst in Melbourne for dumping unwanted dogs, according to the Lost Dogs’ Home. General manager Dr Graeme Smith said that up to 80 per cent of all dogs found by the home came from the western suburbs.
A man allegedly armed with a blood-filled syringe is threatening shoppers in the carparks of three major western suburbs shopping centres. The man has approached eight shoppers at Highpoint, Brimbank Central and Watergardens shopping centres in a week.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a place to overcome burger fatigue A new burger place? Another new burger place? Truth is, I’m suffering burger fatigue. After all, there’s much more wonderful and affordable food in the world, particularly in Melbourne’s west. But then, within days of Between 2 Buns opening on Pier Street in Altona, I start to see feedback on social media – and it’s all good. So off I go for a Saturday lunch. And even for early lunchtime, the place is building up a head of steam of curious and eager punters. They all leave happy. As do I. The place is done out nicely in hip burger-joint style with an accent on black and white. But, unlike some of the franchise places, this one hums with a family-run vibe and high pride in what’s being done. The menu doesn’t explore any outer reaches of innovation or experimentation, but that’s fine, too. There are six burgers, six varieties of fries, hot dogs, “donut sundaes” and shakes. And how about dirty fries . . . large fries, chilli beef, cheese sauce, bacon, M2B sauce and spring onion? An $11 meal all on its own. My ambitions are more modest, for this visit at least. I get a classic burger ($9.50) with beef, cheese lettuce, tomato, red onion, mustard and B2B sauce, with bacon for $1 extra. And a regular of the beer-battered fries. The burger, as suggested by its name, is a classic. Nothing fancy, just top-notch, fresh ingredients stuffed between the covers of a nicely soft bun.
BETWEEN 2 BUNS Address: 26 Pier Street, Altona The slightly chewy, slightly crisp bacon pushes things from good to very good very nicely. What I’d like to see in such burger joints: Hand-cut real-spud chips of the kind found at Woven, Dough! and Zigzag – blemishes and all. As opposed to the reconstituted “beer-battered” variety, which are the potato equivalent of chicken nuggets. At least one non-meat burger or sandwich, perhaps a nice, juicy, well-seasoned mushie burger? Vegetarians will never be a really important part of a set-up such as Between 2 Buns, but offering at least one non-meat option would surely be a winning strategy for those families and groups with diverse eating habits. Finally, if you’re offering hot dogs, I consider it worth paying a bit more, and pricing accordingly, for a fine smoked frankfurter such as those sold by Andrew’s Choice in Yarraville. We’ll revisit so that Bennie can make his expert call on Between 2 Buns. He’ll certainly go for one of the more grandiose burgers. And, most likely, those sinful and seductive dirty fries. ST ALBANSGIFT St Albans Gift promises a big turnout Under ominously eerie skies, in temperatures hurtling into the mid-40s, the inaugural St Albans Gift somehow went ahead. It would share the day that came to be known as Black Saturday – February 7, 2009. Organisers could not have chosen a worse day, in terms of weather and the physical and psychic bruising Victorians were undergoing. But after two years spent dreaming and planning the event, the show had to go on. And it did, in the process establishing the St Albans Gift, sponsored by St Albans Sports Club and Brimbank council, as a community red-letter day. The idea for the athletics event was first mooted in a conversation between Henry McFerran (then the sports club’s board chairman) and Terry O’Donnell, committee member of Victorian Athletics League. But it was the persistence of then general manager Des Bernard that ultimately won through. Once Brimbank council came on board with a grant, the Gift became reality. The sports club’s present general manager, Bonaventure Tai, said that without the help of the council, the event wouldn’t be possible. And he’s very proud of the club’s sponsorship of the event. “This is now a big event, with nearly $11,000 in

prize money,” said Bonaventure. “It’s a day and evening designed as a whole-family event, with entertainment for the littlies, live music, food and, of course, the races will attract everyone. “Our bistro will be pumping out good family meals and everything’s set for a great show.” Last year’s winner of the $5000 120-metres open Gift was Matthew Hargeaves, a win he remembers well. “The win was a bit unexpected. I hadn’t been running well,” said Matt, a professional runner of about 13 years. “But, when I had the fastest heat time, that helped with confidence, and then everything just clicked. It’ll be great if I get the same result.” Australian title-holder (Victorian 4x400m relay team runner) Luke Stevens will be on the grass at Kings Park Reserve on January 16 as well, vying for another win. He will also run clinics with Brimbank Little Athletics club, after which there’ll be two races with the kids competing. Music will be from Trent Hamilton Music, Hogster from Hogsbreath (one of many generous sponsors) will do his thing, and a big bouncy slide will attract the youngster crowd. The fun starts at 2pm. SPORT Knights in local blockbuster Melbourne Knights and Green Gully Cavaliers will meet in a blockbuster opening round local derby to start their 2016 NPL seasons. The Football Federation Victoria fixture gives the Knights the right to host the match under lights on a Friday night at Knights Stadium on February 18. The season will start 24 hours earlier when Oakleigh Cannons host Port Melbourne Sharks in the season opener at Jack Edwards Reserve. The Cavaliers’ first home game will be a week later against Pascoe Vale. In NPL2 west, St Albans Saints and Sunshine George Cross will have the luxury of beginning their campaigns at home. The Saints will entertain North Geelong Warriors, who were relegated from the top-flight NPL last season, while the Georgies will host Moreland City, one of the dominant sides in this division last season.

Melbourne Knights have brought in talented young goalkeeper Fraser Chalmers, a former Brisbane Roar youth team member who will challenge Michael O’Farrell for the No.1 goalkeeping spot. Chalmers was the seventh signing of the summer for Knights coach Andrew Marth. Earlier in the transfer window, new Green Gully coach Arthur Papas pulled off a major recruiting coup by signing former Club Brugge, Brisbane Roar and Australian youth international midfielder George Lambadaridis. Lambadaridis won a Victorian Premier League title with Altona Magic in 2008-09.
■ The western suburbs football community is still in mourning following the tragic deaths of teenagers Jesse Edwards and Brandon Christopoulos just after Christmas. The 19-year-olds were on their way to the Gold Coast for a holiday when the car they were travelling in left the Newell Highway in New South Wales. Jesse played for Glenorden Football Club and Brandon most recently played at Hoppers Crossing. These young men were farewelled by a massive crowd and the outpouring of emotion was enormous. My thoughts – and I am sure the thoughts of this column’s readers – are with them at this time.

are some very hot batsmen around at the moment and none hotter than the top order at Chirnside Park, with Werribee having three players who have scored more than 300 runs this season. They are Shaun Dean (482 at an average of 120), Tim O’Brien (343 at 57) and Matt Dean (347 at 44). Mark Ellis at Werribee Centrals has 329 at 82, Dulekka Thisakuttige at Hoppers Crossing has 314 at 44 and former Bulldogs footballer Adam Contessa is braining them with the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, scoring 344 at 86. Both the Dean brothers have two centuries, as has Contessa. Seems the bat is beating the ball at all levels of cricket these days.

Hoppers Crossing Junior Netball Association will start the new autumn season on Saturday, January 30, at its brand new courts at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing. The competition has 30 existing teams and covers all age groups including nines and under right through to open. The NetSetGo program for beginners (five to nine years) will begin on February 6. Georgies stick to youth By Lance Jenkinson Finishing a lowly third from bottom in the NPLV1 last season has only galvanised Sunshine George Cross soccer club to stay the course with its youth policy. The Georgies are not in the search for instant gratification and will continue to reward home-grown youngsters with senior spots, for the betterment of both the club and the sport. “Our plan at George Cross is to give the young kids senior experience,” Georgies president Jamie Chetcuti told Star Weekly. “Three of our under-20s got senior contracts this year and there are a lot more kids to come through. Once they become really senior players, we’ll have a big future.” The Georgies can see the bigger picture and want to play their part in growing soccer in Australia. They’ve already done their bit in recent times, with a number of their young players moving on to A-League youth teams. 40 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 12, 2016
“For soccer to go forward in Australia, we have to work closely with the A-League clubs and prepare players for them and be proud if they come and get our kids,” Chetcuti said. “We’ve lost nine players over two years to Victory and City youth teams.” A key component to the execution of Sunshine’s youth strategy is new technical director Sean Gale. Gale joins the club from South Melbourne to replace Vaughan Coveny, who vacated the post to take up a full-time position at Melbourne Victory. Coveny will remain involved with the Georgies as a junior team coach, but has passed on all other duties to Gale. “Sean is a professional at what he does,” Chetcuti said. “We know where we want the club to be, what we want to be doing, how we want to produce the kids, preparing them for the A-League, and he supports it 100 per cent.” Sunshine has recently sparked up a sister
relationship with English League 1 club Swindon Town, the former home of Socceroo Massimo Luongo. The Georgies were approached to strike up a partnership and jumped at the opportunity. “It’s a friendly relationship with an overseas club where we can learn a bit off them,” Chetcuti said. “They have a youth development system which is similar to what we follow in Victoria.” But don’t expect to see Swindon poaching young Georgies players any time soon . . . the Georgies’ aim is to push its young players into the A-League. “Our priority is Australian football,” Chetcuti said. “It’s a relationship where the kids can go [to Swindon] and experience overseas football then come back with that experience and take it onto the field here.” Meanwhile, the club and the wider football community is mourning the passing of Darren Frain, a favourite son at George Cross.

Saints aim to shrug off history By Lance Jenkinson Come what may, St Albans will provide the most fascinating story line for the rest of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s North A1 season. The Saints’ players will need to embrace the pressure that will come in the lead-up to the finals because there is no way to avoid the statistic that has followed their club’s every move in recent summers. Five losing semi-finals (and a sudden-death draw) over the past eight seasons have been an enormous burden for the team to carry. It was a stain on an otherwise successful era for the Saints. In 88 regular season games over that span, the Saints won 49, lost just 30 and drew nine, a 55 per cent winning and 65 per cent unbeaten percentage. But in five finals games, that ugly 0 per cent winning record contaminates the other gaudy stats. The Saints’ last finals win came in the 2006-07 finals series, when they beat Westmeadows in a semi-final classic before going on to lose the grand final against Williamstown CYMS. There will be cynics out there who believe the Saints’ destiny might already be written, but not club president Ian MacKenzie. He did not hide from talking about the semi-final slip-ups, painful though they were. He used history as a timely reminder for his players to be prepared to work in the lead-up to March. There is a different vibe around St Albans this season. You get the sense the Saints are ready to shrug the monkey off the back. They are well placed, having entered the new year on top of the ladder with the only

blemish coming in round one. They extended their unbeaten run to six games on Saturday, comfortably accounting for Avondale Heights by 56 runs at Kings Park Reserve. “So far it’s been really good,” MacKenzie told Star Weekly. “It’s nice to be where we are and I’d rather be there instead of fifth or sixth, but we’ve got a lot of work to do yet. “We have to knuckle down and perform as we did pre-Christmas.” On paper, St Albans is better placed for a premiership tilt this season. The key inclusions of all-rounders George Wells and Geeth Alwis give the Saints a harder edge in both departments. The overseas imports have been outstanding this season, with Wells averaging 60 with the bat and an economical 13 with the ball, while Alwis, who missed the second half of last season with a broken finger, has a seven-wicket haul and a century to his name. The Saints just wanted to add a bit of star power to a largely homegrown list and it could be the tonic to get over that semi-final hoodoo. “We’ve always been competitive with the group that we had,” MacKenzie said. “What we tried to do was support the boys in the club who have been with us for a lot of years and give them more depth. “You win premierships with your seven, eight and nine, not your first, second and third.” The Saints will face Merlynston-Hadfield in a one-day game away at Hallam Reserve on Saturday.

MOTOR Mazda already part of community By Ben Cameron One Caroline Springs sports club is already benefiting from a new car dealership in town. Caroline Springs Mazda, which opened its doors in early December, is already a proud supporter of Caroline Springs Football Club and has signed up Hawthorn premiership player Brian Lake as an ambassador. It’s an historic announcement for the first new metropolitan dealership in nearly 20 years. General manager James Rosengarten puts that down to two factors: Mazda’s increase in sales and popularity, and the huge growth in the Caroline Springs area. “We will also have involvement with local schools and other sporting and cultural clubs,” he said. The new dealership, which draws almost all its 40 staff from the local area and from various multicultural backgrounds, has been three years in the making. “We believe in the power of diversity and are excited to have a multicultural team to enhance every guest’s experience, with Vietnamese, Chinese, Afghan, Croatian, Serbian, Australian, Indian and Persian backgrounds,” Mr Rosengarten said. “Our staff includes apprentices, who are working for the first time in their late-teens, up to our car cleaner, who’s in his 60s.” Mr Rosengarten said Mazda was the number one import brand in the country, with a strong reputation for innovation, technology, design and, importantly, customer service. “Mazda is a tightly held network.
