Libs $1.5b road pledge By Liam McNally and Laura Michell Three Melton roads will be upgraded as part of a $1.5 billion west roads package if the Liberals and Nationals win the November 26 state election. Opposition leader Matt Guy visited Melton on Saturday to pledge $700 million to upgrade the Western Highway between the Western Ring Road and Melton, $117 million to duplicate the Melton Highway between Melton and Hillside, and $91 million to duplicate Taylors Road between Kings and Gourlay roads. Melton council has been campaigning for upgrades to the Western and Melton highways as part of its ‘Fix Our Roads’ campaign.

It also wants upgrades to Christies Road, Hopkins Road and the Robinsons Road, Westwood Drive, Calder Park Drive corridor. The Labor Party is yet to commit to funding upgrades for any of the six roads. In September, Melton MP Steve McGhie said only the Western Highway was in his electorate, and while he would continue to advocate for it to be upgraded, the road was part of the national highway network and as such has some responsibility of the federal government. Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins has not responded to questions from Star Weekly about the roads campaign, while Labor candidate for Kororoit Luba Grigorovitch declined to answer. Melton mayor Goran Kesic said council welcomed the Liberal-National pledge. “These are critical road links that are in major need of investment. Upgrading these roads will help ensure that our residents can get to work, education and services on time, and return home safely every day,” he said. “Together with our community, we’ve called on all major parties and candidates to commit to a roads package for the City of Melton through the ‘Fix Our Roads Campaign’.” Mr Guy’s pledge comes as the Calder Action Group calls for greater progress with the Calder Freeway upgrades at Calder Park. Jobs, retail central in plaza plan By Matthew Sims A proposed reimagining of the Keilor Central Plaza Shopping Centre is currently out for public consultation, with the draft development plan outlining plans to introduce residential apartments and new market-style retail experiences. Navy Blue Planning in conjunction with geofferything.studio, Architectus, and Quantum Traffic Consultants have assisted Fort Street Real Estate Capital in the preparation of a development plan for the Keilor Central Shopping Centre. The development plan provides for the staged

redevelopment of the centre over the next 10 to 15 years. The proposed development plan changes the ethos of the centre through the provision of shops and marketplace which ‘open out’ and embrace the outdoors, new laneways and market-style experience, ‘greening’ public places and the consideration of cycling and walking connections. The first stage, also known as ‘Table Tops’ proposes a lively food market precinct expansion of the shopping centre, which aims to embrace the outdoors to connect the existing internal shopping centre to an open town square and to pocket parks for residents,

families and visitors to gather. The development plan also allows for a number of subtle changes to improve the functionality, experience, and appearance of the existing centre, including improvements to pedestrian connections within car parks, floor and ceiling upgrades, simplifying and re-connecting the existing malls to the community values and introducing more natural elements. Other future proposed stages will involve the development of the western and northern edges of the site, as well as the south-western and south-eastern pockets. Cash boost for Sydenham Park pledged The state government has pledged $500,000 towards planning for a sports precinct at Sydenham Park in Keilor North if it is re-elected next month. Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins said the planned sports precinct was a major step in the plans for Sydenham Park. “We’ll invest $500,000 towards planning and upgrades, delivering new facilities that the whole community can be proud of,” she said. Brimbank community wellbeing director Lynley Dumble said the council welcomed the funding. “Any development of the site would be subject to further considerations around budgeting for the project, native flora and fauna, and consultation with traditional owners to ensure the cultural heritage of the site is protected,” she said. Ms Dumble said the council would undertake a feasibility study to determine what upgrades could be made to this sports precinct. Sydenham Park is a 231-hectare reserve in Keilor North, bound by Jackson’s Creek, Maribyrnong River, the Organ Pipes National Park and the Calder Freeway. Sunshine phone filmmaker nominated A Sunshine filmmaker has been nominated for an award at an internationally leading smartphone film festival. Andrew Robb has been nominated for his short film ‘Karl Heinz’, which he will be showcasing at the SF3 Gala in Sydney on Saturday, November 5. The festival received more than 300 entries from around the world that were created on phones or tablets, and offers $50,000 in prizes across multiple categories. ‘Karl Heinz’ is Robb’s 15th short film, and he received the top prize at last years’ festival, for his film ‘Odd One Out’.

This year’s entry, ‘Karl Heinz’, is about a grumpy driver who installs a technical upgrade to his car with unexpected results. Robb said he filmed it while his family were visiting from Berlin. “We were dealing with lots of lockdown constraints, the weather wasn’t great and we were looking for something to do,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to make a film with my car, the old Volvo, so it seemed like a great opportunity to do that over the Christmas break. “I used one of my family members who was in the film, he plays Karl Heinz.” Robb has been making films that show off

Sunshine’s unique culture for over 20 years, including one about the old Millenium Man statue. He said it’s terrific for other people to see a little bit of Sunshine on the big screen. “I love being able to represent Sunshine and the west of Melbourne in film festivals, and Karl Heinz has played as far as Barcelona, Berlin, and Toronto,” he said. New Sunshine clinic offers free urgent medical help for all Western suburbs residents can get free urgent medical attention close to home without having to go to hospital, following the open of a new GP-led urgent care clinic. The Sunshine Priority Primary Care Clinic (PPCC) on Ballarat Road opened Friday, October 21, and is one of five across the state. The PPCC offers free urgent care to everyone, with or without a Medicare card. It is open everyday, for extended hours, and is operated by local GP, Dr Simon Benson.

North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) chief executive Christopher Carter said people could get urgent and expert medical care in their own neighbourhood and didn’t have to be taken a distance away to a busy hospital. “These clinics are a fantastic addition to Victoria’s health ecosystem,” Mr Carter said. “The PPCCs, the hospitals and Ambulance Victoria work closely together to make sure that no one misses out on urgent care when

they need it – and that they are treated in the most appropriate setting available.” Sunshine resident Terry Clitheroe, 81, who was at the centre’s opening, said he would have been treated faster and closer to home if the centre were open when he broke his ankle recently. After slipping on a wet pavement during the recent torrential rain, Mr Clitheroe broke his ankle and had to be taken to a busy emergency department, where he had to wait almost five

hours for treatment. If the PPCC had been open at the time, he said, he would have been able to get his ankle X-rayed and plastered and the moon boot fitted faster and closer to his home. Licence suspension A Caroline Springs man has lost his licence following a single-car crash in Werribee on Tuesday, October 25. Police attended the scene on K Road about 6am. Police allege the driver, a 29-year-old man, returned a positive alcohol reading at the scene and later returned a reading of 0.192 at Werribee police station. His licence was suspended for 12 months and he will face court on drink-driving matters.

L2P earns 200th licence The L2P program has achieved its 200th driving licence. Under the state-funded program run by Brimbank council, volunteer mentors from the community are matched up with a learner driver and use cars provided by council for driving practice. For 12 years, learners between 16 and 23 years of age facing disadvantages have received assistance to achieve 120 hours of driving practice. Farhia Osman, 21, got her licence in July after 16 months of lessons from L2P mentor Martin Ryan. She said the help the program gave her was “fantastic”. “When I first started, I was always nervous when driving,“ Ms Osman said. “But this program with Martin, he always gave me motivation that I can do it.” She came to Australia from Somalia in 2019 and is the primary carer for her six younger siblings.

Ms Osman said getting her licence made her feel “on top of the moon”. “It’s something very important to my life, when I started driving my life changed,“ she said. “I feel like i’m a more independent woman, I can go anywhere I want. “For example, yesterday, my sister was very sick and I thought I needed to take her to the emergency and I thought, thank God I can drive. “The best thing is to go anywhere you want without any barriers.” Mr Ryan is a retired social worker and academic. He said he volunteered with L2P because he wanted to help people in a hands-on way. Ms Osman was his first student, and he said seeing her get her licence was satisfying. “The program is very well worthwhile for people like Farhia that don’t have anybody to take them out for their 120 hours,” he said.

Sunshine masterplan released By Laura Michell A new bus interchange will be created at Sunshine train station and the station entrance revamped under the state government’s Sunshine Precinct Masterplan. The masterplan was released by the government on Sunday, October 30. The government will spend $143 million on the first stage of the masterplan as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail project, now known as SRL Airport Line. The first stage of the masterplan includes a new bus interchange as well as new station plaza and entrance, shared user paths and

open space, pick up and drop off areas and intersection upgrades around the bus interchange. Development sites will be created, which the government said will make it easier to deliver further stage of the masterplan in the years to come. Council welcomed the masterplan and funding, with mayor Jasmine Nguyen describing Sunday’s announcement as the result of significant advocacy by council and the community. “This is a significant step towards the transformation of the working class area of Sunshine into the powerhouse of Melbourne’s

west through leveraging the Melbourne Airport Rail and other mega infrastructure investment,” she said. “The transformation of the Sunshine Precinct has the potential to break the cycle of inter-generational unemployment and disadvantage by maximising the benefits the airport rail can provide for the local community. “The Sunshine Station upgrade will give the entire precinct a facelift, with modern facilities and better access bringing this busy local hub up to the standard commuters in Melbourne’s west expect and deserve.” Council estimates about $500 million

will be needed to fund the Sunshine Station Masterplan in full. St Albans MP Natalie Sulyeman said the government looked forward to seeing works begin at Sunshine and to the delivery of further stages of the masterplan in the years to come. On Sunday, the government also announced works on the airport rail link were under way at Keilor East. The first tranche of works works will include the removal and relocation of six AusNet electricity transmission towers between the Western Ring Road and the existing Albion-Jacana freight corridor.

Pausing to remember their service Caroline Springs RSL will be conducting a Remembrance Day Service on Friday, November 11. Since the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month of 1918 marked the end of WWI, Remembrance Day has been a day for remembering and honouring people for their military service. The service will begin at 10.45am, at the Caroline Springs War Memorial at Lake Caroline. Kids from the local area are getting involved with the event, school students, as well as the local scouts who will be responsible for

raising the flags to half-mast on the day. Caroline Springs RSL president Peter Burquest said that it’s an important day to recognise Australian history. “Remembrance day is pretty synonymous with Australia’s military history,” he said. “It gives the public an opportunity to honour their family, friends and relatives. It’s an opportunity for everyone to remember. “Us servicemen remember all of the time.” Mr Burquest, who was one of the founders of the Caroline Springs RSL served in the army for six years in the 60’s and 70’s, which included

a 12 month tour of Vietnam. Caroline Springs RSL is also organising an early Rememberance Service in collaboration with Melton RSL and Woodlea estate on November 6 at the Aintree Walk of Honour Reflection Pond from 10.30am. Aintree’s Walk of Honour was completed last year, and comes under dual custodianship of Caroline Springs and Melton RSL’s. Melton RSL will be hosting their own will be Remembrance Day services in Melton on November 11 at the Cenotaph on High Street from 10.30am.

The company operating the Sunshine Landfill at Kealba and its three directors have been charged by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Barro Group and its directors have been charged with breaches of the General Environmental Duty (GED) under the Environment Protection Act 2017. The charges allege non-compliance with the GED and have a maximum penalty of $1.8 million for the company and $360,000 for each director. Hot spot fires have been burning at the landfill for more than two years, generating odours. The EPA said the GED requires that every Victorian in undertaking activities must reduce the risk of harm to human health and the environment from pollution or waste. “The decision to pursue charges for this landfill relate to smoke and odour caused by hotspots at the landfill impacting on nearby residents and the environment,” EPA chief executive Lee Miezis said. “EPA is using the stronger powers it was given in the Environment Protection Act that came into effect last year to hold landfill operators and all business to account when they break the law and impact the community and the environment.” EPA has also issued Barro Group Pty a Notice to Show Cause why its licence to operate should not be revoked. The company has until November 14 to respond to the notice before EPA makes the decision on whether to revoke its licence to operate a landfill at the site. EPA extended the suspension of Barro Group’s licence to receive waste at Sunshine Landfill on September 30. Laura Michell

Campaign on: Greens launch bid to win seats in the west The Victorian Greens are hoping to increase their presence in the west by announcing local candidates in the region’s 10 Lower House seats at next month’s state election. Victorian Greens leader and Northern Metropolitan MP Samantha Ratnam officially launched the party’s “westside campaign” on Saturday, October 15 and said the Greens were committed to standing up for the west. “The federal election saw more Victorians vote Greens than ever before,” she said. “This is because they were tired of the major parties taking them for granted and wanted

stronger action on issues like climate change, housing affordability and integrity in our politics. “We’re hoping to build on the momentum of that ‘Greenslide’ and elect more Greens in the Victorian Parliament this November.” The Greens currently hold three inner-city seats in the lower house and Ms Ratnam’s seat in the upper house which takes in the west. Ms Ratnam said the candidates were long-time locals who would help advocate for change.

Labor pledges fleet renewal cash By Matthew Sims Truck operators would receive up to $20,000 to replace older trucks with newer and low-emission models, as part of a $20 million package pledged if Labor wins the upcoming state election. Announced on Thursday, October 27, the $20 million package would include a $15 million grants program to modernise the trucks which travel through the western suburbs. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group [MTAG] president Martin Wurt said the group welcomed the announcement, but said the group was looking forward to seeing more detail of what the program would deliver. “Anything that gets older trucks off the road is definitely a step forward,” he said. “We need clear kinds of targets from the initiative of what they are setting out to do. “MTAG welcomes the carrot approach, but sometimes you need a stick approach as well.” Mr Wurt said the group hoped the program would ensure all old trucks were scrapped. The state government also released the Clean Air for All Victorians Strategy document, which has outlined cost-effective approaches

to reduce pollution and increase air quality over the next 10 years across households, industry, business and transport. Boost for youth wellbeing Youth facing mental health issues will benefit following a $5000 Westfield grant to headspace. Emily Unity, 25, who received the grant as a finalist in Westfield’s Local Heroes awards announced last month, said she was donating the money to headspace’s Visible program. “I have been volunteering with them [headspace] for over 10 years across different states and localities in different capacities,” she said. “I have loved my work as a peer worker and ambassador, but Visible is definitely my favourite project so far.” Ms Unity, who is neurodiverse and comes from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, said the Visible program benefited young people as it linked them and artists to create artworks that highlighted the

diversity of mental health. Ms Unity currently works with headspace at a national capacity, but used to be a peer worker across Melbourne’s north and west, including headspace Sunshine. “As a peer worker, I worked alongside young people through their mental health challenges and recovery,” she said. “It was brilliant to work locally with young people who I related to on a personal level.” Dora Houpis

Suzuki gets a grip with S-Cross By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring In pre-politically correct times ‘The man in the street’ was a term used to describe the ordinary male (person). In 2006 I was in Japan watching early SX4 vehicles roll off the assembly lines at Suzuki’s Hamamatsu plant, noting its bland physical characteristics. This MITS manner was reinforced on an extended drive of the small sports utility vehicle on the company’s test track, with its performance providing an uninspiring driving experience. Little has changed over the years, with the SX4 generally flying under the automotive radar, while its siblings – Jimny, Swift and Vitara - led the way in design and innovation. The latest S-Cross could be about to change the order of things. The second generation SX4 in 2013 took on the S-Cross suffix and an optional all-wheel drive system named AllGrip. It has four selectable driving modes – Normal, Sport, Snow and Lock. Following a facelift in 2016, the third generation first saw the light of day in 2021, and has now been given a makeover for the model year 2023, in the form of a freshened cabin and restyled exterior, plus new technology. The 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine stays pretty much the same but now puts its power to ground through a new AllGrip all-wheel drive system. There is a price to pay - $40,490, plus on-road costs, $10,000 more than the base figure. A Prestige model, with even more goodies, tips the scales at $44,490. I enjoyed time with the latter.

Styling Updated S-Cross styling retains the somewhat angular look of days gone by, while most modern rivals show off slick coupe-like looks.

Included here are a new front and back, doors, bumpers and lighting. Up front the two-storey grille is dominated by the stylised Suzuki ‘S’ and leaves oncoming drivers in no doubt as to the car’s pedigree. A sleeker bonnet, black diamond lattice grille and redesigned automatic LED headlights have the SUV standing tall, while square wheel arches wrapping polished alloy and silver highlights on the bumpers make for a more robust profile than before.

Infotainment A 9-inch touchscreen is a step up from the 7-inch system in the base model. A clear colour display supports factory-fitted satellite navigation, camera with all-round view and digital radio info. Apple CarPlay customers enjoy wireless communication, while Android Auto folk have to make do with wired connectivity.

Cricket called off for fifth week By Tara Murray The rain has struck again for local cricketers across Melbourne with little, to no cricket held at the weekend. For many competitions, it’s the fifth straight week they have been called off due to rain and many grounds being unplayable. The Victorian Turf Cricket Association was the first to make the call, notifying clubs early Thursday afternoon that constant rain meant it had no choice but to cancel play. In a message to clubs, association secretary Deanne Trewin said it had been another frustrating week of wet weather. “I am advising that all VTCA games for this weekend Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October have been called off,” she said. “We understand how disappointing this is for clubs, players, officials etc, but please be patient. We will continue to touch base with clubs and ask for weekly updates on grounds-wickets. “As far as fixtures go, moving forward we have a lot to consider, we will endeavour to keep clubs updated.” The Victorian Premier Cricket competition cancelled all men’s and women’s matches not long afterwards. The Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association made the call Thursday night. There has been no play in the VTCA and VSDCA at all, while only women’s premier cricket has gone ahead in the first five weeks of the season. The VSDCA last week reviewed its fixture with all games before Christmas to now be one-dayers. “The feedback received from clubs since

the washout on Saturday is, whilst all clubs would like to play two-day cricket, the clear majority want to play the 15 rounds,” VSDCA secretary Ken Hilton said. “Club representatives feel it is important that we endeavour to achieve this if we can. “So with this in mind, the board has decided on the following changes to the first and second XI fixtures. “The original fixture had first and second XI playing a mix of one and two day games ( nine rounds) up to the Christmas-New Year break. The board has decided that we still retain the nine rounds but convert them all to one-day games. “In the new year we proceed as per the advertised fixture.” All matches before Christmas will be played on Saturdays, except for round five which will be held on a Sunday. The Western Region Junior Cricket Association called off matches scheduled for Friday night, while those on Saturday, which were after deadline, were in doubt. The games being called off came as Brimbank council shut sporting grounds last week. In a statement which was posted on social media, it said most sportsgrounds and reserves were currently experiencing surface flooding. “Communications continue with clubs and public of the closures and while they are disappointed that their training has been paused, they do understand and are keen to use the grounds during the long weekend,” the statement said. “Sportsgrounds will continue to be inspected and clubs will be updated if ground closure is lifted should weather and/or ground conditions improve.”

Early losses, but Eagles on the right track: Coach The Sunshine Eagles are taking steps in the right direction as they try to kick start their Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 season. The Eagles have just one win from the first four rounds, which also includes a game that didn’t go ahead. While the Eagles lost their most recent game to Waverley, coach Cam Deeble said last week there were some positive signs. “It was a pretty good game,” he said. “We showed some pretty good signs and Waverley were undefeated coming into the game. “We were able to stick with them until the last few innings. It was a high scoring game and they had some clinch hits. “Things didn’t fall our way.” Deeble said the result showed they were on the right track and gave them some more things to work on during the season. Jordan Young was the standard in the loss, scoring a home run.

The game nearly didn’t go ahead though, with rain leaving their ground flooded on Saturday. A lot of hard work meant the game could go ahead the following day. It comes after their round three match didn’t go ahead due to flooding in Essendon. The club’s second side hasn’t played the last two weeks due to flooding in a frustrating season so far. “They are itching to get out on the park,” Deeble said. “Hopefully the weather turns and they can get out and play.” Deeble said there were some good signs at training, which they were hoping would show through on game day. One big in at training for the Eagles has been that of Darryl George. The Melbourne Aces star will play for the Eagles when his Australian Baseball League commitments allow. He is one of the key signings for the Eagles this season. Deeble said having George, who has played a

lot of baseball in Melbourne’s west, was massive for the younger players coming through. “He played against Sandringham three weeks ago,” he said. “To have his presence around is great for the young kids. “He’s still a key part of the Aces, but he will help us out when he can. Just the way he goes about it and prepares for a game is good learning for the younger players. “There’s younger players that have looked up to him.” The Eagles were set to face Blackburn in round five on Sunday, after deadline. ‘Itching’ to hit the turf By Tara Murray Burnside Springs United is itching to make its Victorian Turf Cricket Association debut. With its top sides having changed competitions in the off season, United has been waiting for the start of the season more than most. The first four weekends of play were called off, and the fifth day of play which was scheduled for Saturday, after deadline, was up in the air after more rain last week. As of Thursday morning, no decision had been made on the state of play. United vice-president Dave Gardner said it had been a bit of a challenge keeping everyone up and ready to go. “We are ready to go,” he said. “The weather has had a pretty negative turn in us starting playing turd cricket in juniors and seniors as well. “We don’t know when we’ll start yet. We’ve tried to find ways to keep everyone excited about the start of the season.

“We’ve tried to find ways to keep everyone entertained so when we get out there we are ready to go.” Gardner said they were happy with the squad they had put together this season. Tim Stephens joins the club as a playing assistant coach. He has played with Essendon, Strathmore and Aberfeldie, having been involved in eight senior premierships. Matty Knights comes to the club from Benalla, having moved to Melbourne to study. Both are the set to play key roles this season. “We’ve had a couple of juniors come in as well,” Gardner said. “It’s really exciting and we’re keen to see how everyone goes once on the park and being able to perform.” Gardner said with a lot of unknowns being in a new competition, they would look to use this year as a good starting point. The side is playing in division 5 and will play the likes of the nearby Melton Centrals and Melton South Royals. “In terms of expectation it’s unknown as

we’ve never played these teams before,” he said. “We’ll see what we can do and hopefully get some wins and use this year as a learning experience.” The club’s top women’s side has also made the move to turf in an exciting move for the side. Gardner said there was a real mix of old and new faces in that side who were looking forward to the new challenge. Heading into the weekend’s match, that side was yet to play with round one the previous weekend being washed out. Gardner said having made the move to turf, it was hopefully the start of good things to come. “Hopefully we’ll be a destination club in the next two to three years,” he said. “The new ground is being developed in Burnside Heights. In a couple of seasons hopefully we’re a destination club and that people are getting excited about coming to.” United’s top side was set to face the Melton Centrals, while their women’s side was set to face Aberfeldie, both after deadline.

City West Falcons pair Zoe Davies and Montana Holmes have been named training partners for Collingwood’s Super Netball team for a second straight year. The pair return as training partners along with Casey Adamson, while Olivia Wilkinson joins the club for the first time. Davies made her Super Netball debut this season due to illness and injury to squad members and didn’t look out of place when she got her opportunity. For the Falcons, she was again a star in defence winning the grand final most valuable player award for the second time. Holmes was also a key for the Falcons in their premiership run, dominating in the middle of the court. She is yet to make her Super Netball debut. Both played for Collingwood’s Australian Netball Championship side this year. Wilkinson is a 190cm goaler who showed promising signs throughout the ANC tournament and during the Victorian Netball League season with her home club, the Peninsula Waves. Hailing from Boroondara Express in the VNL, Adamson offers great versatility through the midcourt with great agility and a strong defensive mindset. Collingwood’s netball general manager Amie Quirk congratulated the four athletes on their selection. “We’re delighted to welcome back Montana, Casey and Zoe and to also have Olivia join our SSN program for the 2023 season,” she said. “All four are young talented players who have a lot to offer our program and we are excited to watch them continue to develop and grow.”

Keilor puts its mind to new pennant challenges Keilor is embracing a new challenge in the Bowls Victorian weekend pennant division 2 competition. Having finished runners up in their section last season, Keilor moved sections this season, competing in section 1. Keilor president Joe Watkins said this section was a harder section than what they competed in last season. He said it was a compliment that Bowls Victoria thought they could compete with the higher standard of teams. “They are all hard matches and we’re facing a number of premier league clubs whose second sides are in our division. “There’s some really strong sides with half of their players having the ability to play in the premier division. “We’re excited by the challenge and we’ll put our best foot forward.” Watkins said they were stronger than last season, bringing in three or four new players, while only losing one player.

He said they were always looking for new players for all their sides, but overall the club was looking really healthy. Last season they had six of their 10 sides make final. Keilor started the Saturday pennant season well with two wins from as many matches. It includes a 61 shot win in round two. On Saturday, Keilor was set to face Deer Park 2, after deadline.

Despite facing harder competition, Keilor is keen on trying to earn promotion into division 1. Watkins said it would be a big step for them. The club’s top midweek side is in division 1 this season after winning the overall division 2 title last season. It was the first time the club had won an overall division title since the men and women’s competitions were

combined. Division 1 is the highest grade in midweek bowls. The side has started with two wins from their first three games. They currently sit in fifth spot, percentage outside the top four. They face MCC this week. In good news for the club, its second green will reopen in the next month after upgrades are complete. The club’s other green was hit hard by heavy rain in recent weeks, but was still playable last Saturday. In other matches scheduled for Saturday, which was after deadline, Deer Park was set to face Fitzroy Victoria in premier division. The Parkers are 1-1 after the opening two rounds. Sports shorts WRFL Albanvale has unveiled co-coaches for next year’s Western Region Football League women’s season. After having a combined side with Braybrook this year after not having enough numbers, the Cobras are again focused on fielding a standalone side. Amanda Quirk will join Kon Konstantaras, who coached the combined side this year, leading the team next year. Quirk has played at Pascoe Vale, Airport West and Braybrook having played more than 200 games.

A-League Western United will host its first double header this season for its men’s and women’s A-League sides. Fixtures for both A-League competitions were finalised last week. On February 11, the women’s side will face Melbourne City followed by the men’s side playing Adelaide United at AAMI Park. United falls short again By Tara Murray Western United coach John Aloisi voiced his frustration at inconsistent refereeing following his side’s 4-2 loss to the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League on Saturday. United led the encounter 2-0 at half time after goals to Nicolas Milanovic and Connor Pain had them in control. A red card early in the second half to Nikolai Topor-Stanley for a dangerous tackle left United with 10 men for the rest of the game. The Mariners pounced, scoring four second half goals to come away with the 4-2 win, leaving United win less after the first four rounds. Aloisi said he was unsure whether they would appeal Topor-Stanley’s red card, but said a similar incident earlier in the game against Marco Tulio had gone unpunished. “What I don’t understand is the Tulio challenge on one of our players in the first half,” he said. “No attempt to play the ball and the studs

are up and above his knee and there wasn’t even a yellow card. “That’s where I get frustrated. We were comfortable with two-nil we were away from home and they weren’t really creating much. “The biggest negative for me was the inconsistency from the referring … yes I have to look at myself and I have to look at my players, but I can’t understand how they can get something so different when it’s a similar challenge.” While frustrated at the refereeing, Aloisi said his players should have been better in the second half. Having been 2-0 up, he said they should have been able to do enough to come away with the points. “The red card changed the game,” he said. “It doesn’t mean we accept that, we have to be more resilient with 10 men. “Show that bit of resilience that we’ve lacked a little bit so far. It hasn’t been the best start for us.

“We have to roll up our sleeves and show character and show what we are capable of doing and we’ve got two games before the break, turn the season around.” Aloisi said the frustration at the refereeing reflected in the way they played in the second half. He said they have to focus on their game and make sure that they defend better and be better with the ball. “Those individual battles that we lost, where we usually defend better or we normally do better, was unlike our players,” he said. “We’re down to 10 men that it is going to be hard, we were two goals in front you should still be able to back ups against the wall, no problem, and show that resilience.” Aloisi said there were no fresh injuries out of the game. James Troisi was ruled out during the week due to a calf strain. Aloisi said they were hopeful of getting a few players back for their match with Adelaide United on Sunday.
