Mural has big impact The St Albans community has welcomed some extra colour into the neighbourhood in the form of a new mural. Featuring messages such as ‘waste less, recycle more’ and painted on the back wall of Woolworths, Colombian artist Katherine Gailer (also known as Katira) delivered the piece as part of Sustainability Victoria’s ‘Small Acts make a Big Impact’ campaign. Representatives from Sustainability Victoria, Brimbank council and the Victorian Multicultural Commission joined together to officially launch the mural on Tuesday, October 4. Brimbank council’s arts and culture department offered in kind support with delivery of the mural and launch event, while the LOTE Agency provided further support. Brimbank deputy mayor Thuy Dang said the art would allow the community to connect with the area’s diversity, heritage and aspirations. “This mural is a great reminder that one small change in our behaviour towards living sustainably can make a difference to our environment,” she said. New pool ‘unaffordable’ Brimbank council will analyse the affordability of the new Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre after many residents have provided feedback that entry to the centre is unaffordable. Councillor Maria Kerr, who raised the issue at a recent council meeting, said many residents had told her they simply cannot afford the centre’s entry fees. An aquatic access membership, allowing users to access the aquatic facilities only, start from $11.70 per week, while leisure

memberships providing access to aquatic areas, the health club and group fitness classes start from $17.05 per week. A premium access membership, granting access to reformer Pilates, small group training, the recovery room and additional group fitness classes start from $31.10 per week. Access to use the gym and pool for a single visit costs $19.20 for adults and $15.30 for concessions, with group fitness classes costing the same. Casual swim fees from adults are $7.90, while it’s $6.70 for people with concessions. Access to the spa and the waterslides cost more.

attend this truly amazing facility.” The centre opened last month and offers top-grade leisure facilities including a 50-metre pool, 10-lane competition pool, warm water program pool with adjoining spas, sauna and steam room, a large gym with 24-hour access and group fitness studios. A report outlining the fees charged at the centre compared to other local government aquatic and leisure facilities in Melbourne’s northwest and an analysis of the affordability for families, seniors and people receiving government support payments will be presented to a future council meeting.

Brimbank tops gambling losses By Matthew Sims Brimbank council has continued to top the list of the state’s local government areas in terms of player losses on electronic gaming machines [EGMs]. According to Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) data, $15.38 million was lost on EGMs in Brimbank during August, while the losses recorded in July were $15.55 million – a 1.06 per cent reduction. Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen said it was “very concerning” that gambling losses

and gambling expenditure remained high. “Brimbank is heavily impacted by gambling harm and unfortunately we continue to have the highest daily losses of any Victorian local government area for the past decade,” she said. “In 2021-22, our community experienced losses were over $128 million or $477,310 each day. “This again highlights the need for the Victorian government to undertake serious regulatory reform to reduce gaming venue operating hours and other initiatives to limit gambling losses, particularly in communities like Brimbank that are

vulnerable to gambling harm.” Cr Nguyen said the council would continue to advocate for stronger regulation of the gambling industry. “We support the Alliance for Gambling Reform’s calls for wider systemic reform to reduce the harms that gambling losses bring to our community,” she said. “Council has also been working with the Victorian Local Governance Association on this issue and the association hosts a local government gambling group to help reduce gambling harm. “Council remains vocal in our calls for

better regulation and will continue to raise our concern at other factors such as the proliferation of gambling ads and the growing convergence of gambling and online gaming.” Cr Nguyen said reducing gambling within Brimbank would lead to a number of positive economic, social and health outcomes for the area. “Council undertakes a range of initiatives to prevent gambling harm, including education and awareness of the risks and promoting alternatives to gambling,” she said. Teaching youngsters to cycle safely Young people with disabilities are finding a place to build skills and confidence on a bicycle with Balance before Pedals Ride On [B4P Ride On]. Private lessons are being offered by B4P at the Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre at the Green Gully Reserve in Keilor Downs. B4P co-ordinator Neil Hunichen has more than 50 years experience as a cyclist and is an accredited VicRoads bicycle educator instructor. He is also the vice president of the Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre and has been a

volunteer there for almost 10 years. Mr Hunichen said he has a passion for teaching young people about bicycle safety, which stems from his 25 years of experience as a State Emergency Service volunteer. “I saw an awful lot of road trauma,” he said. “All I want to do in my life now is teach children respect, road safety, and how to ride a bike.” Mr Hunichen found that when he set up his private lessons, most of the people signing up were young people with disabilities. He said he is passionate about the Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre, but his private

lessons grew out of extra community demand, and also a burn out from volunteering. Mr Hunichen said the non-for-profit centre’s education services should qualify them for more government support. He said council has recently been helping more with maintenance, but the organisation is stressed by COVID closures, and a February break-in which Star Weekly previously reported cost the Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre over $15,000.

Brimbank council has launched a campaign aimed at helping reunite stray pets and their owners. The Register to Reunite campaign encourages pet owners to microchip and register their pets and ensure their details are kept up-to-date. The council said all cats and dogs must be microchipped with a registry such as Central Animal Records (CAR) or Australasian Animal Registry (AAR), and registered with the council area in which they live. All dogs and cats in Brimbank over three months old are also required to be registered, microchipped, and desexed. Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen says lost pets are taken to animal shelters because the owners haven’t had them microchipped, registered with council, or updated their contact details. “Pet owners can maximise the chances of being reunited with their furry friends if they follow the advice of our Register to Reunite campaign.” Council said that some people believe microchipping and council registration are similar while others choose to rehome lost pets instead of notifying council because they believe council will euthanase uncollected strays. These misconceptions create more challenges for council’s animal management officers to rehome pets, council said. “Council’s animal management officers work hard to reunite lost pets with their beloved owners and to educate the community about responsible pet ownership,” Cr Nguyen said. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz gave her final speech in parliament on Tuesday, September 20, marking the end of 14 years of serving the seat. She opened her address by speaking to the loss of her sister Paula in July 2021. “The thought of delivering my valedictory speech without the presence of my soulmate and best friend by my side fills me with sorrow, especially considering how proud she was of me on the day of my (inaugural) speech,” Ms Kairouz said. Ms Kairouz said she served on Darebin council for more than 10 years as a councillor, including two terms as mayor and was elected as junior vice-president of the Australian Labor Party. “Being the first female in Victoria of Lebanese descent to be elected as mayor and to parliament, I hoped that young women in my community were inspired to join political parties and get involved,” she said. “I hope they continue to be.” Ms Kairouz served as the opposition whip from 2010 to 2014, then as the cabinet secretary from 2014 to 2016. She then took on the Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation portfolio, which she led from 2016 to 2020, as well as serving as the Local Government Minister from 2017 to 2018 and the Suburban Development Minister from 2018 to 2020. Ms Kairouz also reflected on the situation which prompted her resignation from the cabinet in 2020, including a 60 Minutes expose

which prompted an Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission [IBAC] and ombudsman investigation which made adverse findings against her and former Labor MP Adem Somyurek. Ms Kairouz said overall, the value of her time serving the Kororoit electorate came mostly from representing the people who make up the Kororoit community. Reflecting on what it has meant for me to be a member of this majestic chamber, I realised that all I ever wanted to do was to improve the lives of those I swore an oath to represent and protect,” she said. “My motivation and my inspiration in my role as a member of parliament has been to be the voice of my community, particularly those from low socioeconomic backgrounds and those from migrant communities that have not lived in Australia for long and who are often afraid and not trusting of government.”

Questions put to candidates By Liam McNally Candidates for next month’s state election were held to account over the state of Melton’s roads and public transport systems during a transport forum in Burnside last week. Western Metropolitan candidates, Catherine Cumming (independent) and Bernadette Thomas (Greens) joined Kororoit candidates John Fletcher (Liberal) and Luba Grigorovitch (Labor) on the forum’s panel on Thursday, October 5. They were offered the chance to state their plans for the outer-wests transport systems before being questioned by residents. Mr Fletcher said the state government favours East Melbourne, citing $53 billion committed to a rail tunnel from Box Hill, and Monash having double the bus routes than Kororoit. He said opposition leader Matthew Guy has committed $10 billion over 10 years to improve Victorian road infrastructure. Dr Cummings said she has already strongly advocated for better roads in the west in Parliament and wants to continue to do so. “You should be shocked at the dismissive nature of this government, and the times that I’ve brought up what the issues are for the west, and the times I’ve been mocked in that chamber,” she said. Ms Grigorovitch spoke third. She said the government is spending $20 billion on road and rail upgrades in the west such as level crossing removals, station upgrades, longer trains, Geelong fast rail, Ballarat line upgrade, and the Western Roads upgrade. She said projects like metro tunnel and West Gate tunnel will also

benefit the west. Ms Thomas said the Greens’ plan is based on more public transport, more often. This includes electrifying the Melton rail line, the West to East Metro Rail Plan, 3000 electric buses running across expanded routes, and more separated walking and bike paths. She said at the moment transport infrastructure in the west isn’t keeping up with population growth. During the questions section, constituents were concerned with the quality of roads, and the lack of bus services in new estates like Mt Atkinson. The candidates were keen to ensure they would advocate on behalf of the outer-west but were reluctant to guarantee solid plans during the campaigning phase. None of the candidates made any funding commitments to upgrade Melton’s roads. Melton council and residents are calling for the an upgrade to the Western Highway; the duplication and upgrade of the Melton Highway; the duplication of Christies Road; the duplication of Hopkins Road; the duplication of the Robinsons Road, Westwood Drive, Calder Park Drive corridor; and construction of the Calder Park interchange as part of a ’Fix Our Roads’ campaign.

Braybrook fundraiser Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay residents are invited to a delicious Vietnamese vegetarian banquet as part of a Cancer Council Victoria fundraising dinner to fight cancer in Braybrook. The banquet and fundraiser will be held at the Quang Minh Buddhist Temple at 18 Burke Street in Braybrook on Saturday, October 15 from 5pm. Temple leader the Venerable Phuoc Tan Thich said cancer touched every community. “It’s why it’s so important to come together and raise funds for a cancer-free future,” he said. “I have seen first-hand the awful effects of cancer, and what it can do to not only the person, but to their family members as well. “It’s up to us as a community to stop this terrible disease afflicting our community.” Cancer Council Victoria is a non-profit cancer organisation dedicated to world-leading cancer research, prevention,

and support services. Cancer Council Victoria fundraising and communications Lyrian Fleming-Parsley said community events are an important part of the organisation’s fundraising efforts. “They play a big role in helping fund our world-class researchers who are working day and night for a cancer-free future,” she said. “Cancer is the leading cause of disease burden in Victoria. “There were 34,712 Victorians diagnosed with cancer in 2020.” The temple runs community support programs for Buddhists and non-Buddhists. It also offers family counselling services, employment training schemes, and a free meal on Sundays. The banquet is available for $50 per person and $25 for children up to 12 years of age. Police officer charged A police officer has been charged with unlawful assault following an incident in St Albans in January. In a statement, Victoria Police said the detective senior constable from the north-west region had been charged following an internal investigation. The officer was on-duty at the time of the incident. He will face court at a later date.

Safe river crossing call Brimbank council has called for more action to allow for Brimbank Park visitors to safely cross the Maribyrnong River. At its meeting on Tuesday, September 20, council passed a motion to write to Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio to request an urgent response to the lack of safe pedestrian access over the Maribyrnong River to Brimbank Park. Councillor Virginia Tachos said the council was calling for the state government and Parks Victoria to look at installing a safe pedestrian footbridge across the flooding, which was present for two-thirds of the year. “Even at low levels, people can drown,“ she said. “It’s just really unfair that we don’t have access.“

Lions fest roaring back The Lions Community Festival and Market is returning to Taylors Lakes on Sunday, October 23. After a three-year hiatus due to COVID, the event is returning for its fifth year for a day aimed at fun, community togetherness and raising money for charity. The festival will feature market stalls, food vans, a performance stage, community displays and a kids entertainment precinct which will include a jumping castle, Lions train and a special fairy visitor. There will be fundraising at the event for the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility foundation, a group assisting children who are affected by Cerebral Palsy by providing funding for Hart Walkers and other mobility devices.

The centre stage will include seven acts kicking off from 10am, including traditional Vietnamese dance group AVA, the ELS School of Dance, and traditional music and dance group Croatian Dawn. Lions Club of Taylors Lakes vice president Phil Clinkaberry said the club is excited to run the festival again. “Our role as a service club is to bring the community together so it always brings us pride, and the charitable side is really important to us too,” he said. Mr Clinkaberry also said that the festival has vacant spaces for more community and market stalls that wish to join the event and more volunteers are welcome too. The event will run from 10am to 2pm at the Taylors Creek Linear Park on Chichester Drive in Taylors Lakes.

Seniors enjoy October festival A group of Brimbank senior citizens has been making the most of the series of fun events available as part of the 2022 Victorian Seniors Festival. Keilor Library hosted a creative life writing workshop on Thursday, October 6. Upcoming events include a tour of the new Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre with afternoon tea on Monday, October 24. Various other events around Brimbank include the Be Bold Festival and shows at The Bowery

Theatre and weekly learning programs at Brimbank libraries designed for seniors to reflect on approaches to wellbeing, supporting health and helping to overcome isolation. Disability, Ageing and Carers Minister Colin Brooks said this year’s events represented a wide range of interests. “It’s just one way we say thank you to seniors for everything they do,” he said. Event vacancies are filling up fast, so bookings are recommended.

Coburn Ward with Cr Ashleigh Vandenberg I know how much local green spaces mean to our residents and it’s wonderful to see new tree plantings at Mt Carberry Reserve ready to provide a canopy over the path network, following a budget submission I put forward in June. It was also pleasing to last week see the Victorian Government commit to remove the Coburns Road, Ferris Road and Exford Road level crossings. Council recently wrote to all relevant parties about the need to remove level crossings and I’d like to thank the Victorian Government for making this commitment. Two important Coburn Ward projects were awarded grants in the latest round of the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. Weir Views Community Centre was granted $1.5 million, adding to Council’s contribution of $8.5 million. The new community centre will feature

a community meeting space, four kindergarten rooms with 33 places each and outdoor play spaces. Blackwood Drive Reserve will also be revitalised with contributions from both Council and the Victorian Government of $500,000 each. The upgrade will improve play spaces, play equipment and footpaths, and add picnic and BBQ facilities, new seating, exercise equipment and half-courts. Again, I want to thank the state government for positively contributing to our communities in the west.

With building works set to be completed soon, the new Mount Atkinson Children’s and Community Centre is expected to be open in time for term one kindergarten next year. Three kindergarten rooms will initially open in January 2023 with the fourth to open as community demand grows.

The projects successfully funded this round are new children’s and community centres in Aintree, Plumpton and Weir Views, providing families and children access to 3 and 4-year-old funded kindergarten, additional maternal and child health and family and early childhood services, and new play equipment and shade at Barwon Street Reserve, Blackwood Drive Recreation Reserve and Hillside Recreation Park. I’d like to thank the Victorian Government for co-funding these projects with Council. Last week’s Metropolitan Transport Forum gave our residents a great opportunity to discuss traffic and transport needs across the City of Melton with candidates running in the upcoming Victorian election. Thank you to those passionate residents who showed up and let these key decision-makers know that transport is an issue that’s important to you, and how it impacts on your quality of life. Speaking of transport, I welcome the Victorian Government’s announcement last week that, if re-elected, they will remove four level crossings at Coburns Road, Exford Road, Ferris Road and Hopkins Road and build a new Melton Station. Finally, I’d like to congratulate all of our Western Bulldogs Community Foundation Youth Leadership Program (formerly the Whitten Project) participants who are graduating tonight. New coach Nick Smith ready to go at Albanvale Albanvale has locked in its new coach for next year’s Western Region Football League season. The Cobras announced that Nick Smith would take over the coaching responsibilities after Andrew Bryson and Dean Formosa stepped down after co-coaching this year. Smith brings more than 20 years of coaching experience across all levels including in the Victorian Football League and NAB League competition. He has also coached at Mt Waverley, before most recently coaching Werribee Centrals for four seasons. After 12 months off coaching, Smith was keen to get back into coaching. “After a couple of COVID years I needed a break,” he said. “A took a year off and realised I was keen to have another crack at a

senior coaching role. “I want to help with the game plan and get the club out of division 3.” The Cobras first came onto Smith’s radar when a former Centrals player, now Cobra, mentioned how much he would love the club and that he would be a good fit. When the coaching job became available it went from there and Smith was appointed coach. Smith said there were plenty of good signs from the club this year that finished second before going out in straight sets. “I want to try and prepare them to play finals footy all the time,” he said. “The group said this year they noticed how different finals footy was and the bigger grounds. It can be particularly challenging

with a big gap between the top and bottom. We need to play our brand every game.” Having knocked off the two grand finalists during the season, Smith said they weren’t far off. “We will look to get some improvement from the list and look to add a bit of talent from outside the club as well.” Bryson coached the side for the last four years, while Formosa joined him as a co-coach this year. The club thanked both for their contributions. “Andrew returned to Cobraland in 2019 where he began his football journey as a player and junior coach,” said on Facebook. “Andrew made an immediate impact on his return, driving to continue the Albanvale culture within the playing group but also

adding professionalism within the club. “In 2019 Andrew led the team to a grand final in his first year back at the club. “With a few interrupted seasons and full season 2022 that didn’t go our way Andrew felt his commitment level couldn’t fully be there for 2023 and thought for the best interest of the club that he would step down. “Club game record holder Dean Formosa who stepped in as a playing coach in 2022 has also stepped down as a coach for season 2023 to spend more time with family. “Dean’s passion and love for his club is so respected. Coaching has always been Dean’s vision but with a young family Dean has put a holt on full time coaching for now.” Tara Murray

United set for kick off By Tara Murray Western United coach John Aloisi hasn’t had to find ways to motivate his playing group as they prepare to start their A-League Men’s defence. In a different position than they have previously found themselves in previously as the championships, the vibe remains high in the group. Aloisi said the group was excited to get back out on the field in the season proper on Friday night against Melbourne City in a rematch of last season’s grand final. The match was after deadline. “I’m very excited,” he said. “This is probably other than the final week of the season … It’s probably the most excited that you get leading into a game as it’s been so long since we’ve played a competitive game. “We’re excited about it, we can’t wait, it’s been a good pre-season for us.” With more than 90 per cent of last season’s group returning, United already has a good base for this season. Aloisi said despite the success that they had

last season, there had been no complacency. He said the group had driven themselves. “We want to keep on improving and be a team that keeps on getting better and evolving,” he said. “As a team in areas that we could improve on just keep working hard and that has been the main thing. “I could see the boys were motivated and ready and excited and trained probably even harder than last pre-season. “That is a positive and from there you think the results will come.” Aloisi said that there would be some new faces in the squad round one. Jacob Tratt. James Troisi and Tongo Hamed Doumbia would likely feature in that team. He said Doumbia would take a bit of time to adjust to playing in the league, but was excited about what he could deliver. Aloisi said they were also expecting some of their younger players to take further steps this season. We had a really good step up from the younger players last season,” he said.

“People forget Lachie Wales at the start of last season was only 23 years old and just went to the Olympics . “He performed really well and it was probably his best season to date in the A-League. We also have Adisu Bayew who played a lot of minutes. “Rhys Bozinovski towards the end of the last season and the beginning of this pre-season … They will be pushing. Aloisi said Aleksandar Prijovic and skipper Alessandro Dimanti would have slower starts to the season. He said Diamanti was eager to get back on the pitch. “He hasn’t played any minutes in pre-season and will take a little bit of time to see how many minutes he plays. “It’s been a long time since January this year [since he has played] he has worked hard and he is motivated. “He says it’s his last season, when he says it’s his last season and how motivated he is, only good sign for us.” For the result, head to www.starweekly. com.au

New Western Eagles coach Paul Falzon is looking forward to a new coaching challenge in FV state league 3 north-west. Falzon, who coached Keilor Park in state league 1 north-west the last six years, said the successful history of the Western Eagles attracted him to the role. He said he was ready for a new chapter in his coaching career and that the club’s vision was something he was keen to build. “The committee’s energy, passion and drive to propel the club forward and to continue the focussed success of the team and the individuals was an important factor when I was considering joining,” he said. “It’s also exciting to hear about the club’s vision for growing their junior teams so that they have a pathway for these young players to advance into senior football. “I believe that Western Eagles with its rich history are striving and also deserve a place in higher leagues. “The club’s brand amongst the soccer community is known for its great passionate following and immense impressive facilities.” Falzon said he had also heard positive things about the club, which had been pushing for promotion from state league 3. COVID-19 put a dent in that. Falzon said despite the group finishing ninth this year, he would not go making wholesale changes to the group. He said they would look to add some additional senior players to help enhance the program. “The current squad is a great bunch of dedicated players with a mix of experience and some young upcoming players,” he said. “We are focussed on supporting the team as a whole to be able to compete week on week aiming for the three points. “I’m of the view that team building is an ongoing process that helps the playing group evolve into a cohesive unit. “The players not only share expectations for accomplishing success, but trust and support one another and respect one another’s individual differences. “It’s all about what we do together off the field and on the field, sharing the highs and the lows to get on with the job.” Tara Murray

Storm ‘expect to be very competitive’: Coach Sydenham-Hillside isn’t daunted by the new challenge that faces it in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 1. The Storm has gone from division 4 when they joined the competition in the 2016-17 season to being in the second top flight this season. Coach Geoff Pretty said the group was confident they could continue their good run in the higher grade. “We’re looking okay again,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll challenge ourselves in the higher division. “We expect to be very competitive and challenging at the business end of the season. “You don’t know the opposition but everyone has a fair idea what to expect at that level.” The core of the Storm’s division 2 premiership side has returned this season. Those who have departed are Liam Richardson has moved to Bendigo and isn’t playing this season, while Andrew Reid-Dick has joined Melton. On the other side, the Storm have bought in three players who will step into their first XI.

South African-born Jared Wilson has been playing first class cricket in Ireland and is expected to provide plenty with the bat and ball. West Indies duo Kadeem and Anthony Alleyne, who are not related, have both also joined the club. Kadeem is a talented all-rounder, while Anthony, a former West Indies under-19 player is a top order bat. Pretty said they were happy with the squad. “I think we’re still looking fairly strong, as strong as last year.” While the three internationals are set to help the Storm, Pretty said the growth within the club would also help them make the step. He said it remained a big focus of theirs. “There’s always a lot of talent as we live in a fairly big growth area,” he said. “ We have a big under-16 contingent that is looking pretty well. “We’ll be looking for a few to step up this season across the grades. The Crows had a disappointing 2021-22 season missing out on finals despite having a strong squad. Crows captain-coach Troy Stone said they didn’t want a repeat of last season. “We’re looking to bounce back after a disappointing season,” he said. “We’ve had a little bit of a change of personnel and we’re better positioned than last year. “We didn’t gel, while I think we were a bowler short. We need a bit more consistency, as last season we had one standout player, which doesn’t win you games.” The Crows have looked to reinforce their squad with the addition of six players that will come into their top two teams. Dilip Tharaka comes across from Silverton and has already shown he will be a key batter. Isuru Yaddehige has won a number of best and fairests in lower grades, having most recently played at Moonee Ponds. Aviska Chenuka crosses from Seddon. Stone said the three guys all wanted to play together this season and made the decision to come across. Charith Jayampathi, who played under-19 cricket for Sri Lankan has also joined the club and is a left-arm fast bowler. Mark Tonge and Andrew Tonge, have both come out from Ireland. Stone said they knew they needed more depth this season. “We wanted to add to both our first and second XIs.,” he said. “We want 15 or 16 players who are capable of playing in the first XI.” Like many others, Stone is keen to get out on the field. After round one was rescheduled, round two which was meant to be on Saturday, was called off due to more rain and grounds still not being ready. Stone said they would look to back things off a little bit to ensure the group is ready once they finally take to the pitch. “It’s very frustrating,” he said. “Last year we had a three month pre-season where this year we’ll have a three month pre-season. “To play some two-day cricket would be nice, but we don’t know what will happen with the structure.” Stone said they would continue to keep training and hope that the weather finally cleared and allowed them to play.

He said once they do start they have a clear focus. “We want to play finals again,” he said. “We played finals for five consecutive years before that. “The group is hungry and wants to play finals in all the grades.”

In other matches, Sydenham-Hillside is set to play Tullamarine , Altona North is set to play Airport West St Christophers, Doutta Stars and PEGS is expected to face each other and Seddon is set to play St Francis de Sales.

Another weekend of play without a ball being bowled has been completed in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. After week one was called off due to not enough grounds being ready, there was hopes that week two would go ahead even if it was for the top couple of grades. But competition secretary Ken Hilton advised clubs on Thursday that wouldn’t be the case. “The VSDCA board has decided to abandon all games scheduled for Saturday, October 8,” he said. “We have 19 grounds unavailable for use this Saturday, with another four which are doubtful due to the saturated state of their outfield. “Play at these four grounds would only be possible with favourable drying conditions over the next 48 hours.” Hilton said they would advise of the impact the loss of the first two Saturdays will have on the fixture in due course. The first two weekends were meant to be the first two-day clash of the season in the first XI. Round two is set to start this weekend with another two-dayer scheduled across the next two weekends. In the east-west, Hoppers Crossing is set to face Bayswater, Donvale is set to host Spotswood, Williamstown is meant to be at home against Noble Park, Mt Waverley is set to host Altona, Yarraville is set to play Endeavour Hills, Taylors is set to travel to Croydon and Melton is set to host Werribee. The VSDCA wasn’t the only team to cancel play on Saturday. The Victorian Turf Cricket Association, which also postponed round one, made the call on Wednesday that play wouldn’t go ahead. The competition was meant to have had two one-day games to start the season. The first of the two-days games are meant to start this week. The first round of the Western Region Junior Cricket Association was also meant to start at the weekend. All matches in the under-13s, under-15s, under-16s and under-17.5s were cancelled. Deeble follows in his grandfather’s footsteps It’s somewhat fitting that Cameron Deeble would end up the coach of the Sunshine Eagles in the Baseball Victoria Summer League. Having joined the club a couple of seasons ago, Deeble has this season stepped up to take on the coaching role after Stuart Clayton decided to step down. For Deeble, the Eagles hold a special place in his heart. “It’s pretty exciting taking on that role in division 1,” he said. “I’ve been at the club for two years. “They asked me to take on the role. There’s the family connection with my grandfather coaching here and my dad also playing here. “It’s a little bit sentimental.” While the grandson of an Australian baseball legend Don Deeble and son of Melbourne Aces coach Jon Deeble, Cameron Deeble has put together an impressive resume

himself. He played overseas in college and represented Australia at a junior level. He has had success coaching at Preston, Westgarth and club coach for Essendon during the winter season. Deeble said having been at the club the last couple of years gave him a head in getting down to work. “I got to know the ins and outs for the club,” he said. “The players, the committee members and form a bit of a relationship with them.” Deeble said the squad was pretty similar to the past few years when they’ve been around the mix. He said the arrival of American Justin Revels will help with the pitching depth. “He comes across from the European league,” Deeble said. “Some of our players were over there during the winter season and came across him, so there was a bit of a connection.”

Deeble said they would also have some younger kids step up to fill some gaps. Deeble said things had been good overall since taking over. They also have a new seconds coach, with Andrew Leahy coming on to help the development of the young kids in the second side. The Eagles started their season with a 5-3 loss to Upwey-Ferntree Gully. On Sunday, which was after deadline, they were set to face Sandringham in round two. Deeble said they were hoping the experiences of the last few years would hold them in good stead this season. “We’ve been around the mark and everyone knows what to expect in finals,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll just do a bit of extra work and match our competitors and get across the line.”

Sports shorts VFLW Former Collingwood and Western Bulldogs forward Travis Cloke has been named Essendon’s Victorian Football League Women’s coach for next year. The 35-year-old will also join the Bombers’ AFL men’s program as a specialist coach. Since retiring from playing Cloke has switched to coaching. He replaces VFLW premiership coach Brendan Major who has made the decision to step away from the VFLW program for 2023 and beyond. Football general manager Josh Mahoney thanked Major for his contribution to the club. “From building a program from scratch and recording only one win in our first season to five years later being undefeated premiers is an incredible achievement,” he said.

NWMCA The North West Metropolitan Cricket Association has cancelled all matches for this weekend. While the competition kicked off last week despite heavy rain fall, significant rain on Friday together with poor conditions meant play was cancelled for both Saturday and Sunday. A new role for Torcaso By Tara Murray Multiple championship winning coach Mark Torcaso will have a new role at Calder United next season. Torcaso, who has led Calder’s National Premier League Women’s side since day one, has stepped away from coaching the side due to his commitments coaching Western United’s inaugural A-League Women’s team. He won’t be a stranger though, appointed Calder’s head of football next season. Torcaso gwill still remain connected to the senior team but will move into a role of supporting and directing all teams across our NPLW programs. The club thanked Torcaso for an amazing seven years as coach saying he had played a huge part in the club since the very beginning. In a statement Torcaso reflected back on his time as coach. “The journey at this great club started by being the first appointed head coach and member of the coaching staff,” he said. “It was a call made by former president Eric

Psarianos while he was overseas and from that point, I knew this club was really right for me. We discussed the future, the plans and how we wanted to help shape women’s football here in Victoria. “We wanted to “change the game”. With the official appointment I was set the task to help build it from the ground up. Finding the right people was extremely important. Finding experience and mentors to help guide myself and the club” Under Torcaso, Calder had success from day one as they began the inaugural NPLW champions and premiers. He said it was special to be part of history. “A club with only a few teams knocked down every other “big name” club in its first season,” he said. “The club built a foundation that year, a very important part of who we are today, success. That success was created by not just the senior team but by the whole junior set up also. “Everyone wanted to know who Calder was. This was a club that no one was going to mess about with but more importantly everyone

wanted to be a part of.” Overall under Torcaso the club has won three championships, three premiers plates, five state cup wins and the winning of four community shields. “This club has meant the absolute world to me,” he said. “I have put my absolute heart and soul into everything at Calder. “As I now have a role in the A-League which is more demanding and important to the young players of Victoria, “I need to move into this newly created role at Calder, director of football, Which I happily accept and thankful for. So many people to thank over the time here at Calder for what has been an absolute blast.” Torcaso thanked the committee both past and president for their support along with the players who have been the rock of the club; He said they were the ones that had created the success. “I am happy with the place Calder is in, it’s been a huge part of my life, I will continue to support and work for this great club.”

Western Suburbs has appointed Harry Matkovic as head coach for next year’s FV state league season. Western Suburbs finished the 2022 north-west 2 season in 11th spot with five wins narrowly avoiding relegation. Matkovic, who played in the National Premier League for several years, most recently coached Strathmore. Marijan Cvitkovic has been appointed his senior assistant coach.
