CAKE CREATIONS BY KATE
LT’s Egg Farm was started in 1969 by the Ahmed family as a way to produce food and raise their family. With only 200 birds they were able to produce enough eggs to feed not only their family but also their little local community. The next 50 years would be spent building a business which feeds four generations of families and provides an income for 30 staff. The farm currently produces enough eggs to sustain feeding not only the local community but many other Australian families. The farm has implemented new software systems to track the data and monitor the health and wellbeing of the birds to create a benchmark to improve efficiencies in the future and continues to develop the growth of the business with a focus on community engagement and education programs. The business was expanded with the addition of an onsite deli and café, this diversification was to ensure a sustainable future for the farm. The addition of the café has provided customers the opportunity to visit the unique area which includes farming, tourism and sports, (golf, polo and equestrian) as well as the Werribee Mansion and the Werribee Open Range Zoo.
Led by previous Wyndham Young Business Person of the Year, Katelyn Matheson, Cake Creations by Kate continues to push the boundaries when it comes to innovation within the industry. Recently investing in a new manufacturing warehouse, complete with state-of-the-art equipment, along with new innovative cupcake vending machines, Kate leads a team of 30 passionate, creative staff that aim to provide the highest quality products with signature customer-focused service. Overcoming the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic to come out stronger than ever, Cake Creations by Kate continually has the local community at the forefront of its thinking, regularly donating cupcakes to various charities and supporting the local community. A clear vision and outstanding business management sees this young but mighty business an incredible asset to the local economy.

In 2015, noticing there was a gap in the industry, owner Bill started cooking Loukoumades and selling them at markets, festivals, and events. This was very successful, later prompting an expansion into the food truck scene. During the original Olympic Games “honey tokens”, golden fried balls of dough covered in honey, were given to the victors as the main prize. Honey Dee uses this ancient recipe and has added a modern twist by using flavours such as salted caramel, Bueno and chocolate hazelnut just to name a few. With a focus on the local community and a desire to support others, Honey Dee hires local staff that have various barriers such as high anxiety, autism, social anxiety, and low self-esteem.
Cake Creations by Kate was established in her home kitchen in 2017 by now 23-year-old passionate young entrepreneur Katelyn Matheson. The store, located at Point Cook Town Centre, specialises in mini cupcakes, macarons, biscuits and cake pops, along with specialty cakes for all occasions. To increase brand awareness, the team regularly visits locations around Melbourne with its pop-up stores and has collaborated with a number of corporate clients. Recently Kate has invested in technology to assist staff with everyday tasks along with a new state-of-the-art manufacturing headquarters to service the retail store, online demand and their new cupcake vending machines. Kate attributes the success of her business to a commitment to providing excellent products and outstanding customer service.

Council holds out on bin The act also outlines mandatory service standards which will be introduced for councils and alpine resorts to follow when delivering the four-stream service. This will include standardising the items accepted in those waste and recycling streams across Victoria. However, Wyndham council believes it can deliver separate glass, organics, recyclables and rubbish services without introducing extra bins. City operations director Stephen Thorpe said council was keen to provide a “complementary alternative for municipal councils”. He said council believed a better, potentially more cost effective option, would be to progress plans for a “state-of-the-art” alternative waste processing facility in Werribee.

“The state has mandated we move away from the current two or three services to a four-service waste system, which could be achieved by a four-bin collection service,” Mr Thorpe said. “We believe that the requirement to provide four services to our residents can be met in a number of ways, including providing drop-off services. “The new facility will provide us with the ability to remove food and green waste at the upgraded landfill to support Victoria’s target to achieve an 80 per cent diversion of waste from landfill by 2030. “This would mean that instead of requiring households to separate organics and food from general waste, and therefore requiring a fourth bin, this new facility will provide us with the ability to remove the green waste
at the landfill.” Mr Thorpe said council supported the state governments “ambitious targets” to reduce waste, but a fourth bin would be “extremely costly” for councils. He said community engagement would occur before any changes are made to waste services. Environment and Climate Action Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the state government would provide $127 million to support councils to reform kerbside recycling. “We’re working with all councils to roll out the game-changing new four-stream recycling system to every household across the state, keeping glass and other valuable resources out of landfill and recycling them into new products,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

Wyndham residents won’t be receiving a fourth bin, with council stating the introduction of an extra bin would be “extremely costly” and wouldn’t “meet the varied needs of households”. The state government has mandated that Victorian councils introduce separate glass, food and garden organics, recyclables and rubbish services, in an effort to divert waste from landfill. The Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Act, which was passed in December 2021, requires councils and alpine resort management boards to provide the separate services to households in their municipality by 2030. The government said that in most instances this will mean a four-bin system at the kerbside.

Planning begins for Mercy expansion The architects and engineers behind the million dollar expansion of the emergency department at Werribee Mercy Hospital have been announced. Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas revealed architects Lyons and engineers LCI have been appointed to the project, as detailed planning and designing is set to soon begin. The $110 million expansion funded by the state government is hoped to double the capacity of the emergency department for the growing community, and support an additional 25,000 patients per year. “These appointments mean we are one step closer to delivering a state-of-the-art
and expanded emergency department at the Werribee Mercy Hospital,” Ms Thomas said. “This bigger ED will ensure people in Melbourne’s west have access to world-class facilities when a loved one gets sick or when an emergency strikes.” Treatment spaces will increase from 33 to 67, and will also include four resuscitation bays, 16 short stay beds, 36 emergency care cubicles as well as a behavioural assessment room. The state government hopes the expansions will help ease pressure on the existing emergency department for the hospital’s dedicated doctors, nurses, orderlies and allied
health workers. “By doubling capacity at the emergency department at Werribee Mercy Hospital we’re helping our hardworking doctors and nurses treat more people and do what they do best – save lives and keep people healthy,” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said. “This adds to the more than $120 million invested in the expansion of critical care at Werribee Mercy, which was completed in 2018.” Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA), the expansion is on track to be completed in late 2026 and is expected to create and sustain more than 1000 jobs during peak construction.

Call for road fix action By Fatima Halloum About a dozen protesters gathered at Dohertys Road on September 1, calling on Wyndham council to bring forward plans to fix the road. Located in Tarneit, a section of dips in the structure of the road between Derrimut Road and Tarneit Road is prone to flooding and gaping potholes. Wyndham resident Intaj Khan attended the protest to advocate for “immediate attention”. “Dohertys Road now is being too long left … the road is really bad,” he said. “The road is quite deep and wheneverthe rain happens, even small rain, it always gets flooded. “During the night, there’s not [enough] light, [so] even without the [rain] you [could] still get hurt.” Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said that while the council
understood some residents were frustrated, it is doing its best to upgrade and fix as many roads as possible. “Being one of Australia’s fastest growing cities, we simply cannot keep up with the demand, and require the continual assistance of state and federal governments to assist in building much needed infrastructure,” Mr Thorpe said. The residents at the protest also called for state government intervention, however a Department of Transport spokesperson confirmed Dohertys Road between Derrimut and Tarneit roads is a municipal road and council is responsible for the construction, inspection, maintenance and repair of the road. “This section of Dohertys Road is the sole responsibility of the Wyndham City Council,” the spokesperson said. Mr Thorpe said council anticipated the
reconstruction and duplication of Dohertys Road would take about two years to complete. “As previously advised, we are currently undertaking preliminary design of the road realignment at Dohertys Road which will see the road shifted south towards the Emerald Estate and full duplication,” he said. “The new road alignment will include a 45 metre-wide road reserve which will include the reconstruction of Dohertys Road from Tarneit Road to match into recent intersection works with Sapling Boulevard.” Council announced in late August it would temporarily close the road for two weeks to repair the road pavement required due to water inundation. “If anyone is listening to us, if anyone cares about it, we need this road to be fixed. If it’s not fixed, we will continue raising our voice,” Mr Khan said.
Wyndham council will receive $1.5 million to invest in the municipality’s libraries, the state government has announced. The Public Libraries Funding Program provides annual funding for public libraries across Victoria so that they can provide necessary library services. ”Libraries play an important role in connecting local communities like ours in Wyndham to resources of information, literature and so much more,” Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said. “The Public Libraries Funding Program ensures that the Wyndham community continues to have access to these fantastic services.” This funding will expand library collections, boost online services and provide library and outreach programs. “It’s great to see the government continuing to support Wyndham City Council to deliver high-quality resources for our community through the Public Libraries Funding Program,” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said. Keep yards clean, grass short as snake season slithers in Wyndham council has issued a reminder to residents that a free, professional snake catching service is available on referral from council. Council said that based on previous years, snakes are most active across the municipality during September and October. “While there is a free snake catching service available for residents, the best action remains prevention,” Wyndham community safety portfolio holder, councillor Susan McIntyre, said. “We ask that property owners and other Wyndham residents do their bit to keep

snakes away from their property by keeping yards clean, by cutting their grass short and by ensuring rubbish is disposed of properly in bins.”
In 2021, there were 347 calls made to council regarding snakes, including after hours and over weekends. Snakes can be found anywhere. However, council says residents living near natural parklands and waterways are being asked to remain extra vigilant throughout the peak season and warmer months. If a snake is sighted, council recommends keeping a safe distance and not touching or approaching the reptile, and removing any children or pets from the area. Residents are encouraged to immediately call council to arrange a professional snake catcher. Council said the snake catching service will attend
as soon as possible, however it is important to note that if residents choose to contact a snake removalist independently, residents will be responsible for any cost incurred. If a resident believes they have been bitten by a snake, council recommends they seek urgent medical attention by calling triple-0, or if they are concerned that their pet may have been bitten, contact a veterinarian for advice. Overdose deaths are on the rise The number of Wyndham deaths linked to drug overdoses in 2021 was the highest in the last 10 years, according to a report released by the Coroners Court. The data was sourced from the Victorian Overdose Deaths Register which provides detailed information on the number of overdose-related deaths per local government area between 2012-2021, and the specific drug or drugs used. The term ‘overdose’ is used to describe a death experts determined was caused by the acute toxic effect of a drug or drugs.
In 2021, there were 15 overdose-related deaths in the municipality, ranking Wyndham equal ninth for the number of drug overdose deaths in the state. In comparison, there were 11, 13 and 12 deaths in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively. North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network executive director, service development and reform Jagjit Dhaliwal said there was no benefit in blaming people for developing an addiction. “The reasons for illicit drug use are complex, and can influence risk-taking behaviour
among any group,” Mr Dhaliwal said. “It’s always a good idea to create space for open dialogue, without judgement, to discuss any concerns you might have with friends or family members about their excessive use of alcohol or other substances. “Be open and honest with your doctor about any drugs you’re taking – prescription, over the counter or illicit.” Wyndham also ranked equal six in the state for the number of methamphetamine-involved overdoses, recording five deaths. Mr Dhaliwal said one of the best
preventative measures is to avoid early exposure to drugs. “Children are influenced through observing their parents and their families, as well as from their peers,” he said. “If they see from a young age these role models drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes or using other substances there’s a risk they will seek to emulate.” Melbourne reported the highest number of overdoses, recording 28 deaths, followed by Greater Geelong and Greater Dandenong, with 23 and 21 deaths respectively.

Connor Ovenden-Shaw took the challenge, and transformed the items destined for the trash into a wearable classy coat. Now the Tarneit Community Learning Centre’s artist-in-residence is teaching people
how to do the same. “In my own practice, I always use sustainable materials,” Connor said. “I thought it would be really fun to get the community into that.” The Sustainable Wearable Art Project is a free project all residents are welcome to join. “People can come in and collect material

One of 25 new urgent care clinics will be established in partnership with Werribee Mercy Hospital, the state government has announced. The GP partnered services will be designed to handle medical issues such as mild infections, fractures and burns, and will operate for extended hours. The service is hoped to ease pressure on emergency departments, and give people faster care for urgent but non-critical conditions. “Around the country, the pandemic has put enormous pressure on healthcare systems, and part of that is because – through no fault of their own – people have delayed going to their GP and accessing primary care,” Premier Daniel Andrews said. The state government said locations were determined following consideration of population, community needs and emergency department demand. Residents will be able to access the clinics for extended hours and people will not be charged for services provided by GPs. Patients without a Medicare card will also be able to access services for free. “Not only will this initiative free up beds in the ED for those with the most critical needs, but it will also fast track non-emergency patients so they can receive the treatment they need in a more comfortable setting,” Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said. Other locations include Frankston Hospital, Bendigo Hospital, Casey Hospital, Albury Wodonga Health, Austin Hospital, Alfred Hospital, Dandenong Hospital, Latrobe Regional Hospital, and Box Hill Hospital. The state government said another 10 Victorian locations will be announced soon.

Wyndham residents are being urged to learn the new Australian Fire Danger Rating System in the lead up to bushfire season. From September 1, the new national fire danger rating system uses four colour coded levels, moderate, high, extreme and catastrophic, to provide clear information for people to best protect themselves. The Country Fire Authority’s assistant chief fire officer Tim Holland said the concept was first identified as a priority in 2012, and further determined necessary following the 2019-20 bushfires. “What’s really important is that our communities and our residents, in Wyndham in particular, learn about [the new fire rating system] so they’re ready for it as we start coming to a warmer summer later this year,” Mr Holland said.
“It’s a learning time for all of us, we’ve got to do the understanding and learning now, not in the middle of summer when we start to see smoke in the area, it’ll be too late.” Mr Holland said the last two fire seasons in Wyndham have been grassfire dominated, and
fire services were expecting this year to be no different. “The real focus for our residents on the grassland fringes is not to be afraid of fire, but to learn and understand what to do,” he said. “A grass fire is very different to a bushfire, in terms of the radiant heat and the dangers and stuff that come with it. “Once we start to see the grassland around our properties at home start to dry out, we ask people to start preparing the property, clear the vegetation area, and keep grass well mowed.” Mr Holland said it was especially important for residents not to become complacent about fire safety, especially in the home. “Home fire safety all the time is really important…because that runs all year round,” he said. Ison Road overpass extended Wyndham residents will soon gain easier access to the Princes Freeway via the Ison Road overpass, after a collaborative state and federal government investment of $114 million to complete the project. The overpass will be extended south towards Browns Road and connect with a section of Ison road set to be constructed by Wyndham council. Extensive planning works and community consultation on the proposed design and planning pathway, which attracted more than
4000 participants, have since been completed. Mayor Peter Maynard said the council “certainly welcomes” the announcement. “Wyndham city has been advocating for funding for this project for a number of years, so the announcement is a big win for our community,” he said. “This is an important link for our residents. The overpass will provide motorists with a direct link between Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes to the Princes Freeway, providing an alternative for commuters
and relieving congestion.” It is expected that the overpass will cater to nearly 29,000 daily users by 2036. “Investment in safer, more reliable roads in an area of such significant growth will provide long-term benefits to locals,” federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said, “Wyndham is rapidly growing, so we are getting on with building the Ison Road bridge to make it easier for our local residents to go between home, work and school.” Major Road Projects Victoria announced
it is also in the early stages of planning for potential improvements to the Werribee Main Road and Princes Freeway Interchange in Werribee, including traffic modelling, planning studies, and environmental and historic heritage investigations. This planning work will consider future upgrades to the interchange, including on and off-ramps to the Princes Freeway, as well as active transport and cycling options. Construction of the Ison Road Rail Overpass is expected to begin in 2023.
Firies kick off charity game for mental health Wyndham’s fire brigades will put their best footy skills on display in a game against umpires from the Western Region Football League, in support of mental health. Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade captain Paul DiMartino said he hoped the event would encourage people who were struggling in silence to seek support. “The last four or five years we felt mental health was so important [and] the stigma around umpiring and fireys are generally male-orientated,” Mr DiMartino said. “We really wanted to try and promote [that] it’s OK to seek help, and we’ve all experienced way too much.” The community event has been running since about 2008, and Mr DiMartino said the money raised from the $10 entry fee will be donated to a worthy cause.
“This year, we chose beyond blue, next year we might chose a different organisation,” he said. The game will be played on September 18, at Avalon Airport Werribee, from 10.30am. Building for sick kids When Wyndham Brickfest president Andrew Elsbury handed over a $3000 cheque to the Werribee Mercy Hospital paediatric ward, it wasn’t made out of plastic or cardboard. It was created using hundreds of pieces of LEGO. Werribee Mercy Hospital general manager Maree Pane says the public hospital is always extremely grateful for community support. “Werribee Mercy Hospital is located in one of Australia’s biggest growth corridors,” Ms Pane said. “Over almost three decades, we have built a trusted relationship with community members, as illustrated by this type of generous support.” A 1.2 metre high LEGO artwork of a colourful lion was also gifted, in the hopes it
would inspire the young patients. “Given that the lion is a symbol of strength and bravery, we hope the design might adorn a wall within the ward at some stage,” Mr Elsbury said. The donation will be put to good use on the Paediatric Ward, which cares for about 1500 patients a year, aged up to 18 years old. The funds were raised during the 2022 Wyndham Brickfest, a competition that encourages participants to build a LEGO display. “LEGO continues to interest both young and not so young people, not just in Wyndham but around the world while the paediatric ward and its staff at WMH play such a vital role in the care of a number of our unwell youngsters,” Mr Elsbury said.

Geography in the artistic frame On a white wall at the Islamic Museum of Australia hangs a photograph taken by western suburbs creative Ammar Yonis. The 25-year-old is one of 14 artists from across the country to have their work displayed in the Australian Muslim Artists exhibition. Yonis said his image explores the relationship between recreation, how people spend their time, and their geography. “I’ve been in the west since I was in grade one … it’s one of the fastest growing regions but I’ve always felt like there hasn’t been a focus on the recreational facilities, things for young people to do,” he said. “I always felt like it was too hard to play or the soccer pitch was too far from my house, all these factors, they influence what a young person is going to spend their free time doing.” Yonis said the title of his series, ‘Out of Bounds’, is a reference to being out of the city, and the differences between the accessibility of facilities when compared to the west. “On one hand it was commentary on the relationship between geography and recreation,” he said. “On the other hand it was a celebration of the determination that young people have to make the most of the resources available to them, no matter how limited they are.” Yonis said viewers “100 per cent” don’t have to hold Islamic beliefs to appreciate the variety of the art displayed at the museum. “There is some Islamic influence in some of the works, but most work is just art, something that the artist finds important and wants to showcase,” he said. “It’s not just photographs, it’s paintings, beading, hand drawings, like there is such a diversity in the artwork and the artists.” “Everyone’s from different backgrounds, from different states, not just Victoria, so you get a glimpse of the artwork coming from

different parts of Australia.” Yonis said he hopes others from the western suburbs can feel encouraged to pursue creative careers and aim high in their pursuits. “If I think about where I want to have my work displayed, it would be in big places like the NGV, Immigration Museum. “[But] also you want to balance that with where the people go, and not just any people, but people that resonate with your work and the themes behind it. “For me to have an exhibition inspired by the western suburbs, if I could have that exhibition in the western suburbs, obviously that message is going to be felt very strongly compared to presenting the work somewhere else. “The best outcome for me is to have my work in front of people, and in spaces where they can engage with the material and talk about the reason why this artwork was made.” The Australian Muslim Artists exhibition will be displayed until November 12. Fight on for better bus transport By Fatima Halloum A group of activists is calling on residents to help campaign for better bus services in the western suburbs. Friends of the Earth Melbourne are advocating for fast, frequent, well-connected grid network of buses, serviced by clean, electric buses. FoE Melbourne sustainable cities community organiser Elyse Cunningham said wait times in the west are “significantly higher” than the average for metropolitan Melbourne, sometimes by about 40 minutes.
“Over the past decade, Melbourne’s western suburbs have experienced some of Australia’s fastest population growth rates, yet transport infrastructure has failed to keep up with the needs of communities,” Ms Cunningham said. “The bus route runs along long, winding, convoluted lines that make it hard for people in the west to get around. “This means people living in the west are often dependent on their cars. “Despite many across the west being on lower incomes, people are having to fork out for petrol and other car-related costs
at a time when the cost of living is rising dramatically.” Ms Cunningham said sufficient access to public transport increases people’s ability to access essential services, like shopping centres, hospitals and education. “It is particularly important for those who are unable to drive, who without adequate PT are at risk of becoming socially isolated,” she said. “We want to see buses running every 10 minutes all across the west so that everyone can have easy access to essential services, jobs and to each other.
“It also means people are less dependent on their cars which has enormous benefits for the environment such as lowered air pollution and fossil fuel consumption.” Ms Cunningham urges residents to discuss with local community members the transport issues prevalent in the municipality, and to write letters to local MPs. “The most powerful campaigns are led by affected communities and Sustainable Cities wants to support local leadership wherever possible,” she said. Community celebration Western United will celebrate winning the A-League Men’s championship and its new A-League women team with the club’s first ever family day at Wyndham Park. On Sunday, September 18, the club will hold Western United themed football activities and entertainment, from noon until 3pm. The entire A-League men playing squad and coaching staff will attend with their championship trophy, allowing fans to meet their favourite players. Some members from the newly formed women’s league will also be in attendance. Rhyme time gets all dressed up It was a bear-y special rhyme time at the Manor Lakes library on Thursday, August 25. Kids, librarians and parents dressed up as their favourite characters to celebrate this years book week. By Alesha Capone Demand for birthing suites at Werribee Mercy Hospital has reached capacity. The hospital welcomed 3833 babies in 2020, slightly lower than the 3888 babies delivered there in 2019. Health services chief executive Jason Payne said Werribee Mercy Hospital’s birthing numbers had remained steady over the past two years because the birthing suites were unable to accommodate any more expectant mums. He said some pregnant women within the Werribee Mercy Hospital catchment are
being forced to use services at public hospitals outside the area. “The demand exists for Werribee Mercy Hospital to deliver more babies locally but this cannot occur without expanded facilities,” Mr Payne said. “It would be preferable that local families had access to more of the best high quality and safe public birthing services at Werribee Mercy Hospital, so they don’t have to travel.” Mr Payne said planning was under way to boost the capacity of the birthing suites. “A third stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is currently in the final stages of planning, will involve the creation of more
birthing suites, additional post-natal beds, and other ante and post-natal facilities, accompanied by additional midwifery and nursing staff. “Based on demand for existing maternity services, it is projected that Werribee Mercy Hospital would be well placed to meet an anticipated increase in demand of up to 30 per cent more babies in the western metro area.” Mr Payne said Mercy Health has been working with the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and the Department of Health and Human Services since 2016 to prepare for the future needs of Werribee Mercy.
In November’s state budget, $4.8 million was allocated to finalise planning for the third stage of the hospital’s development. “We have acknowledged publicly the funding was a clear sign the voices of the people of the west of Melbourne are being heard and government is committed to meeting a major upgrade,” Mr Payne said. Mercy Health Group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s construction required $300 million in funding “to ensure the people of Wyndham receive the level and quality of health services they deserve and need”.

bouncing up and down! She has a new lease of life at 84, even recently taking up Pilates. Small moves for happy families By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring It may be short on words but ‘family car’ is long on the desirable characteristics of a passenger vehicle: affordability, space, versatility, comfort and convenience, power reliability, fuel economy, safety and last, but not least, looks, all jostle to be taken into consideration. This goes a long way to explaining the success of the five and seven-seat sports utility vehicle, or Mum’s minibus, the eight-seater people mover, which can take the kids and all their kit. However, there is another side to family life. Sons and daughters leave home and start families of their own. It is often left to Mum and Dad to bring the family together with visits to their offspring. A gas guzzling minibus is the last thing the downsized duo needs. This is where a small economical runabout comes to the fore. something like the Toyota Yaris Ascent Sport hatchback, a versatile compact capable of carrying four adults, or a couple and all their luggage, the latter on a considerable road test distance. At an affordable $22,130, plus on-road costs, the car is the entry level to the Yaris line and the only variant with a six-speed manual transmission. The others, including petrol/ electric hybrids, have a direct shift CVT, which adds just $1500. A CVT-equipped hybrid on SX and ZR attracts a further $2000 over their equivalent petrol variants. Ownership costs include a five-year warranty, extendable to seven years, up to 10 years on the hybrid battery and five annual services capped at $195 each. Conveniently to hand on Ascent Sport is standard equipment which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED daytime running lamps, tail and stop lights; auto retractable door mirrors with LED turn signals; and power windows. For the first time on a Toyota vehicle in Australia there are safety features designed to make Yaris the world’s safest compact car. They include front-centre airbags, sensors that can detect vehicles or pedestrians at intersections when making turns and secondary collision braking. A long road . . . the Yaris Ascent Sport hatchback passes the family test.

Styling The all-new Yaris is shorter and lower than its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase (40 mm). Despite the lower roofline, interior headroom is not compromised, the driver and passengers sitting lower thanks to the new Toyota B-platform. A sporty exterior boasts a stand-out cascading grille, longer bonnet, sculpted door panels, character lines and a shorter rear overhang. There are 12 exterior colours, including Cherry Blossom in the case of the test vehicle, which elicited compliments from onlookers who marveled at the subtle change of hue from off-white to lavender, depending on the light.
there’s access to Sir, Eyes Free, Google Now voice commands. AM / FM / DAB+ digital radio is in the hands of six speakers, while USB video playback is on offer when the vehicle is stationary.

Toyota Yaris Ascent Sport has an all-black interior, offering an open, spacious and comfortable cabin with ample headroom and an up-market ambience with high-quality seat fabrics. Despite a wider centre console, there is no room for an armrest, hence no leaning post for the driver. Gearshift and cup holders take up the space. However, the new platform allows the driver’s seat to be set lower and further back towards the centre of the car, creating an appealing driving position and helping to lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity by around 15 mm. The steering wheel is set closer to the driver, with wider tilt and telescopic adjustments. Electric steering is tuned for a light feel at low speed and responsive feeling at high speed.
Advanced safety technologies include a pre-collision safety system with autonomous emergency braking, active cruise control, automatic high beam, and technologies to assist with cornering, staying in the intended lane and detecting speed signs. A reversing camera and a full suite of brake assist and traction-control systems, including active cornering assist are also standard. Eight airbags include driver, front passenger, two front centre, two front side, two curtain shield. The new front-row centre airbags - a first in class - are designed to offer additional protection in a range of accidents. They can act as energy-absorbing cushions between the driver and front passenger in side crashes, or in passenger-side crashes when the driver is the only occupant. They can also provide safety benefits in rollover accidents.

domestic air travel chaos, or risking catching COVID-19. Fortunately, the kind folk at Toyota Australia found a spare Yaris lying around and offered it up for the drive. As we, the intrepid pair, were about to set off, came the news that an old family friend had died in Melbourne and the funeral was to take place while we were in Sydney. What were the chances of driving on to Victoria and back in the Yaris? Following a phone call to Toyota, every chance. The result was a 3700-kilometre round trip in a vehicle that would have been far from the top of the list in which to tackle such an exhaustive exercise. How wrong we would have been. The entry-level Yaris Ascent Sport had the last laugh, lapping up the highway kilometres, or taking on heavy traffic in the country’s two largest (and congested) cities. Although the lack of factory-fitted sat-nav was a drag. Google is no competition here.
The new 1.5-litre petrol engine produces more power and torque, while using less fuel than the 1.3 and 1.5-litre four-cylinder engines it replaces. Tagged with the ‘Sport’, engine performance is not all that impressive. In slow city traffic high revs are the key otherwise stalling is the downfall. Toyota claims the new Yaris manual uses just 5.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle. The test car clocked 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres while flitting around towns on the route and 3.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the open road. Total fuel bill came to $286.47, thanks, Toyota. The little motor was quiet enough at low revs but let out a raspy reply when urged to work higher up the scale. The manual gear shift at times was not of Toyota’s usual high standards and needed firm handling to avoid connecting with the wrong gear. On the upside, the new platform underpins a significant increase in body rigidity, which contributes to agility, stable handling, ride comfort and lower noise and vibration. A 270-litre cargo area incorporates a two-level deck board. Big items - two large suitcases in the case of our excursion - can be accommodated with 60:40 split-fold rear seat backs folded flat. Front door pockets take up to a dehydration-beating 1.5-litre bottle, rear door pockets up to a 600ml bottle.
Summary The test took place mostly under clear winter skies, all on sealed roads, the Yaris also coping with early morning frost in the Southern Highlands and being rain bombed on the Hume, all the way to drawing together relatives and friends - a genuine family car.

Stunning debut by Truganina Hornets women The Truganina Hornets women’s side were winners before they even took to the pitch in the FV state league 5 north-west competition this year. Having not fielded a women’s team in a number of years, the Hornets entered a side as they looked to increase female participation at the club. The side exceeded all expectations, going through the season undefeated on the way to claiming the title. They finished equal on points with second placed Western Eagles, but claimed the title on goal difference. Hornets committee member Josh Banks said they were thrilled with what the side had been able to do. “It didn’t matter whether they won a game or went through undefeated, they were a success in our eyes,” he said. “It’s our first year of having this team come
together with a new coach and new group of players. “We were really keen on developing and giving women an opportunity to play competitive sport. “We’re incredibly proud of what they have achieved.” Banks said none of the women had played at the club before and not many of them knew each other. He said coach Tyson Scarcella was the driving force behind getting the group to come together as a team. “He did an awesome job galvanising this team,” he said. “They came together not just as a group of players, but they were able to come together and have that team culture. “The enthusiasm within the group was just so strong. They gelled as a group and worked hard week in week out. “It was enjoyable to watch.”
The Hornets were back in action on Sunday as they faced state league 5 south-east winner Chisholm United for the overall state league 5 title. Chisholm won 4-1. Banks said in the end they were beaten by a good side. “We were really proud how they approached the match as it was outside of the official season,” he said. “There was no drop off and real focus on trying to get over the line. They just came up against a really good team.” Now that they’ve got a women’s side back on the park, Banks said they were keen to further increase female participation at the club. “The club is focused on improving our female footprint,” he said. “We want more females at the club in coaching, juniors and seniors.” Truganina Hornets’ women’s side.

Tigers’ hopes still alive By Tara Murray Werribee Districts season continues on after a hard fought win against Deer Park in a Western Region Football League semi final on Sunday. Both sides were keen to keep their seasons alive after mixed results in the first week of finals. It was the Tigers though who were able to continue the momentum into the match, winning 11.9 (75)-6.15 (51). Tigers coach Chris Gilham was over the moon on Sunday night. As well as the seniors winning through, both their under-18s and reserves won through to the grand final on Saturday. “It was a great day of footy for the club,” he said. “It’s been a great fortnight. “With the reserves and under-18s into the grand final, the whole club is really happy with how it is going. “It’s a reward for all the hard work we are doing.” Against Deer Park on Sunday, the Tigers made the most of their opportunities early to get the game on their terms.
They led by 24 points at the first break, despite having one less scoring shot. Gilham said that quarter set up the game. “It was to and fro early on for both teams,” he said. “We both had good opportunities to hit the scoreboard early, we took our chances and kicked six goals straight in the first quarter. “At the other end they missed a couple of opportunities. It’s all about a game of inches in football. “We were very happy to have taken the opportunity and produced that early scoreboard pressure.” While the Tigers had the lead, Gilham knew that the Lions were going to keep coming. The week before they were in the same situation. “It makes a big difference,” he said. “Last week during the game we had to make a few gambles, which Deer Park had to do. “They had to do those things to give themselves an opportunity, but it then gave us a chance to counter attack. “We were able to score off the counter attack which was good. The pressure was massive, but our back six was amazing and kept repelling them.”
Gilham couldn’t speak highly enough about the back line which is one of the youngest in the competition “They are young and inexperienced and taking on some really big names, some former AFL players,” he said. “They are 18,19, 20 and very talented players. You don’t win unless you have a solid back line. “They are courageous with the ball. “We play finals football every year and this year we’re taking the opportunity to turn final opportunities into wins. “They keep showing up and getting some reward for effort.” Daniel Nielson and Trent Lee kicked two goals each for the Tigers. Harrison White and Zak Busuttil were named their best. The win sets up a preliminary final with Caroline Springs. The minor premiers lost their semi final to Altona, 11.5 (71)-9.11 (65). Gilham said they were prepared for the challenge. “They have been the benchmark all year and have a really even side,” he said. “We take in great confidence after the last two weeks and we have to take it to them.’
New Hoppers Crossing import Shijit Chandran will play a dual role at the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association club this season. Chandran, who is currently playing premier league cricket in India, joins the Cats having played in Sydney previously. He was recently part of the LYCA Kovai Kings who won the Tamil T20 competition. Chandran is a top order batter, who also bowls off breaks. The signing of Chandran strengthens the the Cats batting line up, having already signed Simon Lambert as captain-coach. As well as playing for the Cats, Chandran will coach the Cats’ women’s program. Last season the club had two sides combined with Sanctuary Lakes, one in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket competition and one in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association. Both made grand finals. In a video on Hoppers Crossing’s social media, Chandran said he was excited to be joining the Cats this season. “I’m a first class cricketer currently playing in the premier league in India,” he said in the video. “I’m pretty happy to be part of Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club for the upcoming season, [and] even more happier and excited to be taking on the role of senior women’s coach, “I’m very eager to take on the responsibility.” Chandran, who is due to Melbourne later this month, said he was keen to help the women’s side grow as a team. Centrals find form when it matters the most Werribee Centrals are peaking at the right time in the Geelong and District Netball League. Having finished the regular season in fourth after an up and down season, the Centrals started to hit some form in the final round of the season. They’ve continued that into finals and now face East Geelong in the grand final on Saturday. Centrals co-coach Casey Price said she would never rule her side out when it came to finals. “If I was to back a side in to do it the hard way, it would be Centrals,” she said. “We started to find form against Winchelsea in the final round of the season. Price said they were able to get out to a 10 goal lead at half time, before being able to consolidate that and continue on in the second half. “It was a good start and it was a good day of netball,” she said. “The girls have been pretty consistent and so calibrated in the team approach.” Price said while there were a number of good contributors, there were three that stood out. Caitlin Hendrickson had a phenomenal game in defence shutting down Winchelsea’s goal attack. Ellie Vincent got a lot of ball in the shooting circle, while Natasha Dimkovski was strong in the mid court. For Centrals, the performance sees them return to the final day of the year, where they have been so many times before. Price said they had a really good mix this year and it had paid off. “We’ve been interrupted by COVID,” she
said. “Some players have returned after kids now. “We have a really nice mix of older players and youth. We’re more consistent and back where we used to be deep into September. Centrals now face East Geelong in the grand final. East Geelong had the weekend off. Price said they were expecting a tough game. “We’re expecting a close game,” she said. “The first game we won comfortably, before the second match was the other way round. “We’re both strong defence teams and the best two teams in terms of goals conceded. It will be a really good game and whoever puts it on court will win.” The A-grade side joins the under-19s in the grand final. Sports shorts NAB League Western Jets’ Logan Morris will be among the best under-17 players from across the country that will play at the MCG on AFL grand final day. The Werribee Districts product was last week named as one of 48 players selected to play in the NAB AFL Futures match. Squad members will come together for a training camp ahead of the match, before being split into two teams.
A-League Western United’s A-League Women’s squad continues to take shape with Francesca Iermano signing with the club. This is Iermano’s first full contract having made her A-League debut for Melbourne Victory last season, making three appearances. Iermano said she is delighted to join the green and black and continue to develop her game in the A-League.

Fairytale end for Sharks By Tara Murray The hard work paid off for Point Cook Centrals as they won the Western Region Football League women’s division 2 premiership. The top side all season, the Sharks showed why they had only lost one game for the season, beating Caroline Springs, 9.8 (62)-4.1 (25) on Saturday. Sharks coach Leanne Meyer said on Sunday it was pretty surreal to have claimed the title after so many ups and downs through the year. “You don’t have much control when the players are on the field,” she said. “Everything has built up to that moment throughout the year. “You’re relying on effort, I’m absolutely proud of them, they deserve this after putting in so much effort.” The last time the Sharks faced the Lakers, in the final round of the regular season, the Lakers caused the Sharks only loss of the year. according to Meyer. “We didn’t show up on that particular day and we didn’t play our brand of football,” she said. “A lot of the senior women said after the game we don’t want to feel like that again with such passion. “We then didn’t lose again.” The Sharks did all the attacking in the first quarter, but only had six behinds to show from it. Meyer said it was just about settling down and focusing on their processes. “They were a bit nervous,” she said. “Caroline Springs were defending well too, but we weren’t centering the ball we were just kicking and hoping. “It was a bit of panic stations. Once we got them settled and played our style of footy, hard and contested footy, it was game on. “I told them to focus on doing their best and not the outcome.” After quarter time the Sharks got their kicking boots on. They would kick 9.2 for the rest of the game to come away with a big win.
Meyer said every player played to their ability which was all they asked from them. She said the premiership wasn’t just for the players, but the group that supported them week in and week out. Mandy Seath kicked five goals for the Sharks in the win. Mary Daw was awarded the best on ground medal. Leah Moss and Kathryn Howard were among the other standouts. It was a big day for the Sharks girls. After catching a bus to the ground in Yarraville together, they stuck around to watch the men’s division 2 complete the perfect season. Both teams then headed back and spent the night celebrating. “It was an amazing day for the club and the Point Cook community.” The Sharks are set to play in division 1 next season. Meyer said it will be a whole new ball game. “We will have to take our football to the next level next year,” she said. “The ladies earned it and deserve to be in division 1.”
More than half the Western Region Football League division 2 team of the year has come from the two grand finalists. Seven players came from minor premiers Point Cook Centrals. Centrals had a player on every line of the ground but one, while first year coach Dean Chambers was named coach of the year after an undefeated regular season. There were five Parkside players named in the team, led by Shaun Campbell, who was named captain of the team of the year. There were two players named from each of Wyndhamvale, Newport, North Footscray, Glen Orden and Albion. West Footscray, which didn’t win a game, was the only team not represented.

Change at the top as Steve Kretiuk steps aside It’s an end of an era for Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League division 1 competition. After nine years in charge of the Warriors, coach Steve Kretiuk has decided to step down. Kretiuk said the club and the playing group knew at the start of the season that it would be his last in charge. “It was the plan,” he said. “I spoke to the president last year and decided after missing finals [due to COVID-19] that I would go on another year. “After nine years at one club, I didn’t want to outstay my welcome and it was time for some fresh faces.” Kretiuk’s last game was in the first week of finals, with the side losing an elimination final to Werribee Districts. He said while they won all their key performance indicators, they turned the ball

While he didn’t take the club to the ultimate success, Kretiuk said he was able to achieve what he set out to do. “The club is in a good place and I’m envious of the next person who takes on the role,” he said. “For me it was about creating a sustainable club. My philosophy was to build with guys from the club and some are still there nine years later, who we blooded coming up from under-18s. “We played in a couple of grand finals and played in finals nine years in a row.” Kretiuk said outside of finals wins, the crowning moment of his time at the club was

He highlighted Corey Muscat as one of those success stories. “We plunked him in the back line and he shut down small forwards for a number of years,” Kretiuk said of Muscat. “He’s developed in the midfield and won the best and first last year. Five or six years ago, no one would have thought he would win a best and fairest.” Kretiuk leaves the club confident that the club isn’t that far away from success. Perfect season ends on a high By Tara Murray Relief was the biggest emotion for Point Cook Centrals on Saturday as they claimed the Western Region Football League division 2 premiership. Having gone through the season undefeated, all the pressure heading into the match was on the Sharks to overcome Parkside and complete the perfect season. It was the Magpies that brought the heat early and led by one point at half time. An eight-minute period in the third quarter would be the match defining period. The Sharks kicked four goals in that period to take a 24 point lead into the last break. The Magpies kept coming in the last quarter and managed to outscore the Sharks, but it wasn’t enough. Centrals claimed the premiership, 10.4 (64)-7.6 (48). Sharks coach Dean Chambers said it was a massive day for the club. “There’s a lot of relief,” he said. “There was a lot of pressure going into the game and
everyone was talking about the inevitable. “To get the cup was a massive relief at the end of the day. Parkside was a fantastic competitor.” The Sharks dominated the last contest between the two teams in the first week of finals, but it was a lot closer this time round. Chambers said they were slightly concerned at half time, despite the margin being just one point. “For the first half, Parkside played like we had for most of the year,” he said. “They brought the pressure for long periods of time. Other teams had been able to do that for short periods of time, but not as long as that throughout the season. “They threw the team around from the first final, it took half a game for us to adjust.” Chambers said at half time they just reinforced that they had to stick to their structures and believe in the game plan that had worked all year for them in the second half. He said they knew that they could turn it around. “We knew there would be periods in the
second half,” he said. “We knew we had to play more than 120 minutes of football. “It didn’t matter if we won by one point or 100 points. Full credit to Parkside. We knew something was going to come for us, but we didn’t know when it would come.” Chambers said they continued to try and attack in the final quarter, but the Magpies should down many of their forays. The Sharks just needed to hold their nerve to get the win. “Parkside didn’t allow us to have it our own way,” he said. “We needed to control the contest and slow it down.” Lachlan Grant was awarded the best on ground medal for his impact down forward, with five goals. Chambers said the backline led by Cale Du Plessis and Kurt Mayne were really good. He said Mitchell Palmer was the one who ignited them in the third quarter when they needed a spark. The win for the Sharks capped off a big day, with their women’s side winning the division 2 grand final earlier in the day.
Chambers said there was a big crowd to watch the women’s, before a massive night at the club as everyone celebrated the two premierships. The men’s premiership is the club’s first since 2018 when they won the division 3 premiership. Next season they will be in division 1 and up against the big boys of the competition. For Chambers and the committee it’s an exciting time to be at the club. “Division 1 is really exciting and it’s what we’ve been building to,” he said. “We want to be a destination club. “Our junior program has been a huge focus of ours and it was really good seeing so many juniors and their families at the game and in the club rooms afterwards. “We’ll take stock and look at finals next week including the under-18s.
