Abuzz with excitement A Diggers Rest beekeeping group is buzzing with excitement, after receiving a community grant to help boost their club. J Beekeeping Club has received a Jemena Community Grant as one of seven projects across Melbourne’s north-west, gaining $1850 to support the club’s activities. Club president Mick Symczycz said the funding would help to buy safety suits for prospective beekeepers attending beginner workshops, providing better access for more people to join in the past time. “We just want to encourage people who may be interested and point them in the right direction,” he said. The club is passionate about educating those who are new to the hobby in important biosecurity measures to promote responsible beekeeping. The funding will also be used for better audio visual equipment to facilitate educational presentations. Mr Symczycz said the club was grateful to Jemena for the grant and was keen to welcome everyone in. “It’s open to everybody, old people, young people, all sorts of different people come to the club. “It doesn’t matter who you are, if you like bees, we’ll help you along.”

School crossing petition By Olivia Condous A community group is petitioning Melton council and the state government to fix a “serious issue” that is impacting the safety of school students in Melton South. A group of residents has started a petition calling for the construction of a school crossing on Rees Road in Melton South, in an area where students from four different schools cross the road.
The petition that has amassed almost 250 signatures. During the August 15 Melton council meeting, councillor Ashleigh Vandenberg called for council to investigate buidling the crossing. Nasim Uddin, a parent of a student who attends Al Iman College on Rees Road, said there were often road accidents due to a lack of school crossing. “At the roundabout, when kids try to cross
the road, some drivers stop to give way but then a car behind will crash into them,” he said. “We just need attention as soon as possible, this is a very serious issue.” Mr Uddin said parents were also concerned about the lack of footpath on the west side of the road to access the bus stop, forcing those using public transport to walk through the mud. “A lot of parents, we have seen women with
prams or people with mobility scooters, they have to drive over the grass,” he said. Cr Vandenberg said the construction of a school crossing in the area was “essential”. “School crossings are there to ensure the safety of our children when they get to school, especially during school drop off times,” she said. “This is to cater for the needs of our growing community and not only for the safety of road users, but the safety of all.”
