Budget win for club By Laura Michell Keilor Sports Club is one of the big winners in the 2022-23 Brimbank council budget, with $50,000 set aside to design and cost a redevelopment of the Joe Brown Recreation Reserve facility. Council adopted its budget for next financial year on Thursday, June 23, after considering community submissions on the draft document, which was released in April. Council received 158 submissions on the draft budget, of which 134 requested funding for the Keilor Sports Club. It comes as a bid by councillors Virginia Tachos and Jae Papalia to include $120,000 in the draft budget to upgrade the club’s kitchen and toilets was rejected by a majority of councillors in April.

- Virginia Tachos The funding is among $131,000 in projects and grants added to the budget following community submissions. This includes $50,000 for the installation of a concrete path around the perimeter of pitch one at Keilor Park, an additional $11,000 grant to support Western Chances, and an additional $20,000 for an arts hub for micro arts organisations working with diversity. Keilor Sports Club president Hayden Kelly said the club was happy with the funding. He said the club’s facilities were built in 1986 when it had about 300 members. The club now has about 1300 members, aged five to 99. “We all agree that we need a larger footprint,” Mr Kelly said. “The current facilities are still in good condition. They would be fine if we still had 300 members.” Mr Kelly said the club would work with council and the state government to make the redevelopment a reality, with plans to build a bigger social facility with a commercial kitchen and upgrade toilets to meet current standards.

The council funding will be used to ensure the project is “shovel ready”, he said. Cr Tachos said she hoped the club, council and the government could work together to “lift the club to a much bigger facility” from which it can deliver its programs, coaching, mentoring and community-building.

Call to rethink creche closure By Laura Michell The Greater Sunshine Alliance is calling on Brimbank council to rethink the closure of the Sunshine Leisure Centre crèche. Council has decided to close the crèche to repurpose the space for group fitness classes amid dwindling demand for child care at the centre. The decision has been criticised by the alliance, which believes council should postpone the closure until an independent review of the proposal is completed. “The crèche service is vital and needs to be reinstated immediately for our current

families and those to come, as our community continues to grow over the next decade,” the group said. “Locals are incredibly disappointed with the council’s response and expect a more proactive response that engages with us first, rather than telling us and then dismissing our concerns.” Brimbank community wellbeing director Lynley Dumble said the crèche has been “significantly underutilised” for a number of years, even prior to COVID-19. “From 2015 to 2018, there was an average of 5.2 visits per day to the crèche, but this dropped to 3.8 visits per day in 2019 prior to COVID. More recently this has dropped to

two visits per day in February to March 2022, with only three families utilising the service,” she said. “Its operation comes at a significant cost to council for a service with minimal use and therefore limited community benefit. “Before the crèche closed, alternative child care options were first worked out for the three families using the crèche, so that they had nearby childcare options. All of these families did not have an issue with the crèche being closed. ”Other patrons with children can also use these alternative nearby childcare services.” Ms Dumble said that while demand for

the crèche has fallen since the leisure centre reopened post-lockdown, there has been an increase in demand for group fitness classes. “A recent member survey with over 800 responses indicated less than one per cent of respondents used the crèche while it also identified a large unmet demand for additional group fitness and gym programs,” she said. “Council looks forward to providing these additional services to meet the needs of its members and visitors. “Council must make decisions on the spending of public money that are financially responsible and sustainable for our residents.”

Roald Dahl and the Imagination Seekers celebrates Dahl’s stories from The BFG to The Twits, and many more along the way. Somehow, Dahl’s words are mysteriously disappearing – not only from books, but from children’s minds too. Luckily, the top-secret Ancient Guild of Taletenders have come to the rescue. Join them for fun interactive game, immersive storytelling and theatrical magic to save these stories. Starring Maddi Savage and Josh Burton, the show is aimed at children aged six and up and

is an interactive performance, with the kids joining forces with Savage and Burton to make up a story. Savage said that while she and Burton have rehearsed the show extensively, it’s impossible to prepare for the answers some children come up with. “They are quite outlandish,” she says. Burton says kids love the show because it is “very silly and very fun”, however, he is eager to point out that there are also jokes parents will appreciate too. “It’s quite difficult to get sick [of this show]. It’s hard to deny the joy of the kids giggling and squealing,” he says.

Director Rob Wilson, who created the show with the Roald Dahl Story Company and the Puffin division of Penguin Books, said he wanted to share the joy of Dahl’s books with families. “We empower children to be the centre of the story and we take many suggestions from them throughout giving that live feel of improvisation,” he says. Brimbank council will assess the feasibility of creating a resource recovery centre at the Sunshine Energy Park. Council was one of 30 across the state to recently receive a $20,000 Recycling Victoria Councils Fund grant from Sustainability Victoria. Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the funding will assess the feasibility of using an existing building at the Sunshine Energy Park, on Ballarat Road, Albion, for a resource recovery centre. Brimbank already has a resource recovery centre at Keilor Park. According to council, a new facility could include a repair cafe or other community sharing and social enterprise initiatives. “We’re proud to support Victoria’s transition to a circular economy through local innovation for resource recovery solutions that benefit our communities – and all Victorians,” Cr Nguyen said. Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the grants would help councils investigate projects that divert waste from landfill, boost circular economies and reduce costs by uncovering new methods for recycling materials. “We’re supporting local councils with new ideas on how we can cut back waste, protecting the environment and creating local jobs,” she said. “We’ve invested more than ever before in our state’s waste and recycling system and we’re working together to provide practical solutions that will benefit more communities and residents.”

Dangerous driving charge A man has been charged with dangerous driving following a hoon meet up in April which led to a car colliding with a spectator in Derrimut. Police will allege the man was driving a blue Holden Commodore on the evening of Saturday, April 23, at the intersection of Derrimut Drive and Grimes Court. It’s alleged the man was performing burnouts in front of a group of spectators, before colliding with a person watching on, causing them to be thrown backwards. The 19-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, June 22 and will face court in December.

Deanside kinder open A new kindergarten in Deanside was officially opened on Monday, June 20 to provide a new learning space for kids. Early Childhood Minister Ingrid Stitt and outgoing Education Minister James Merlino attended the official opening of the new two-room interim facility. The kindergarten was running from term one of this year to accommodate for the statewide rollout of funded three-year-old kindergarten. The centre is a partnership approach between the state government’s Victorian School Building Authority, Melton council, Sparkways and Deanside Primary school. The co-location with the primary school makes it more convenient for families with young children. The temporary facility will be used to provide services for the growing Deanside

community until it’s replaced with a four-room kindergarten and integrated children’s centre in 2026. In the 2019–20 state budget, the project shared in the $283 million funding allocated to deliver modular kindergarten facilities and more kindergartens on school sites. Melton mayor Goran Kesic said the facility created a space for local children to start their education journey, from kindergarten to the end of primary school. “This centre will enable us to support many families and our youngest residents through their early development, giving them the best possible start we can,“ he said. “I’d like to extend our warmest thanks to the state government for its support of early years’ service provision in the City of Melton.” Olivia Condous

Old Calder Hwy safety upgrades Motorists travelling along the Old Calder Highway in Keilor Park will experience a safer journey thanks to the installation of new safety treatments to reduce road trauma. Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll said the measures will help increase driver awareness and reduce the likelihood of head-on collisions. Works will involve the installation of tactiles, as well as new line marking and signage between Keilor Park Drive and Bonfield Street. According to the state government, there

were six crashes along this section of the Old Calder Highway between January 2017 and December 2021. Three resulted in serious injury. Five of the crashes were as a result of head-on collisions. One of the crashes was fatal, with a 54-year-old woman killed in a two-car crash in November last year. The incident prompted community calls for safety upgrades along the road. Since the fatality, the Department of Transport has been working with Brimbank

council and Victoria Police to investigate the most effective interim treatments to improve safety for all road users According to the government, audio tactiles installed in the centre of the road will help raise driver awareness and reduce the occurrence of motorists veering across the line. Double barrier centre lines will create a distance between oncoming lanes of traffic to help prevent head-on crashes, the government said. Raised retroreflective pavement markers will

guide motorists within their lanes, especially at night, and act as a small bump to alert drivers when they are crossing the line. “One life lost on our roads is one too many, which is why we are installing these safety treatments on the Old Calder Highway to reduce road trauma and save lives,” Mr Carroll said. “We have worked hard with our road safety partners and council and are delivering improvements to make it safer for all motorists.” Works will be completed by mid-2022.

Free health program Women in Brimbank and surrounding suburbs will be supported to lead healthier lifestyles through the return of the Daughter’s of the West program. The Western Bulldogs Community Foundation will provide a free 10-week health program for women aged over 18 who live and work in the west, starting from July 12. The program is designed to connect like-minded residents and educate women about their health, through talks from experts and fitness classes for all levels of ability. The sessions will run in two locations, with one in Fraser Rise on Wednesday evenings and the other in Brookfield on Tuesday mornings. Facilitators plan the workshops, presentations, events and fitness sessions to make exercise and healthy lifestyles achievable and enjoyable in order to improve overall well being. Western Bulldogs community relations manager Kashif Bouns said the Daughters of the West program gave women of all ages the

Kids get the job done Pint sized civil engineers and construction workers can try their hand at building their own rail bridge and underpass replicating Level Crossing Removal Projects at Robinsons Road, Fitzgerald Road and Mt Derrimut Road. Western Building Blocks workshops are being held in Ardeer from Monday, June 27 to Saturday, July 1, where children aged three to seven can learn about what is involved in removing a level crossing. The sessions are held on the hour, for 45 minutes. Children use large foam building blocks to create bridges and underpasses. Other activities will see children make their own rock planters to watch grow, dress up in construction gear and work through activity books focused on engineering, the environment and safety. Over 350 children took part in the inaugural Berwick Building Blocks workshops held in December 2021 and January 2022. St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman invited local kids to “find out how we get the job done”. “The Western Building Blocks workshops offer the chance for the community to learn about what the Level Crossing Removal Project team do, and lay the foundation for our future engineers, designers and construction workers,” she said. “We are thrilled to be hosting the Building Blocks workshops in Ardeer, following the roaring success of the first one in Berwick that saw more than 350 children participate.” Ms Suleyman said the new Fitzgerald Road bridge will open in July, which will see the congested level crossing gone for good six months ahead of its 2023 schedule. The Robinsons Road level crossing will be removed by the end of the year, also ahead of schedule. The state government will also remove the level crossing at Mt Derrimut Road by 2024, building a rail bridge over the road as well as a new, modern Deer Park Station.

Jalal’s journey to Australia Jalal Ahmadzai, his parents and two siblings fled Afghanistan in August 2021 after the Taliban took control of the country. Now living in Craigieburn and working as an interpreter for AMES Australia, Jalal Ahmadzai spoke with Helena Abdou about his experience and shared an open letter to shed light on light on the plight of those who fled from Afghanistan.

alal Ahmadzai says he will always dream of the day he can return home and wonder the streets of Kabul. The 23-year-old, his parents and two siblings are among the hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees who fled the country after the collapse of the Afghan government in August last year. Ten months on, he can still clearly recall the day Kabul fell to the Taliban and mayhem ensued. “It started off as a normal day, we went to work and school,” he says. “Towards about 10 or 11am, there was a bit of chaos starting around the city, you could feel the tension. “There was nothing wrong, there was no fighting, but there was just a commotion. “People were just in a hurry and you could feel that something was wrong. “And then we got the news that the Taliban had apparently arrived at the gates of the city.” Jalal was working at a bank in Kabul when it was swarmed by people in a bid to withdraw their savings. “People had money deposited in the banks, and they were worried about the safety of the money so people wanted to withdraw the money,” he recalls. “But we couldn’t give them money because the bank didn’t have enough liquid money to give out. “Our team said that we need to evacuate the bank through the backdoor in groups of two or three because people are growing increasingly mad.”

Not long after he left work that day, Jalal learnt that the president had fled the country. “With the news of his escape, the entire army collapsed, the army that was built over 20 years, collapsed in a matter of hours,” he says. That evening, Taliban vehicles rolled into the city and thousands of people headed for the airport in a desperate attempt to flee. “It was like a stampede at the airport,” Jalal says. “The first three or four days was very bad, everyone rushed towards [the airport], people who had passports, people who didn’t have passports, people who had nothing, no tickets, no visa. “People were going to the airport with their electricity bill.” Jalal and his family decided to wait before making their move.

“We left the country about 10 days after the fall of the government and went to neighbouring Pakistan,” he says. After fleeing to Pakistan, Jalal and his family decided to try to get to Australia. “We heard about Australia’s humanitarian visa, and then we applied for it and we just got it. I think it was because we lived here before for three years in 2012,” he says. Upon arriving in Australia for the second time, Jalal applied for work as an interpreter with AMES Australia, an organisation that

sought to help refugees and asylum seekers with employment services and training. “When I arrived I started volunteering with AMES … I was one of the few refugees who was interpreting at the time … and because there was a big influx of refugees, and a lot of them could not communicate in English, I walked up to them and said I could help out for a couple of hours a day.” After a few months, he secured a job with AMES. As much as Jalal is enjoying his “wonderful” life in Australia, his thoughts don’t stray far from life back home. In open letter to highlight the plight of those who fled Afghanistan, Jalal wrote: “Abrupt change, uncertainty and the unknown often strike fear into the hearts of humans. “When events take a turn for the worse at a time when one had been planning the complete opposite, it naturally puts one in a

state of shock, blurs one’s judgment and makes one lose track of events that follow. “The swift collapse of the Afghan government on August 15, 2021 made all of that a reality for all the Afghan people.” Reflecting on his new life in Australia, Jalal wrote: “Many of us succeeded in escaping the darkest regime, leaving behind our families, friends, and loved ones. “Not only that, we left behind our lives, our dreams of graduating and serving our country. “We all can continue our lives outside Afghanistan peacefully, but there will always be a sadness engraved deep in our hearts. “We will be strangers wherever we go and the feeling of being homeless will never leave. “I will always dream of the day I can go back to my home and wander through the streets of Kabul.”

Many also experience sleep problems, loss of memory, and poor concentration.These continue at least for many months, but it is too early to know whether, like pre-pandemic CFS/ ME, they may be permanent. Not everyone who develops long COVID will have chronic fatigue syndrome, of course. Many people report other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, palpitations, or temperature fluctuations. While not unknown in CFS/ME, they are not considered tell-tale signs of the condition.

Of course, a big part of the problem is that there is no universally accepted clinical definition of long COVID yet, because it is still a relatively new thing and most COVID-19 research over the past couple of years has focused on preventing or treating severe disease in the first phase. The World Health Organisation says long COVID often features “fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive dysfunction … usually three months from the onset of COVID-19 with symptoms that last for at least two months

and cannot be explained by an alternative diagnosis ”. Research is under way around the world, trying to add a bit more meat to those bare bones. In the meantime, what can you draw from this? The main thing is that if you feel inexplicably tired for several months, a COVID-19 infection a few months earlier, even a very mild one, might be significant. Talk to your GP. And the other thing is, be kind to yourself. That exhaustion you feel is real.

For a still-unknown proportion of people, even a mild case of COVID-19 can carry an unfortunate twist in the tale: a new set of symptoms, sometimes severe, that can persist for months. Some, such as brain fog, seem quite common, while some others are rare. Some come and go, others stay for a very long time. This is known as long COVID, or sometimes ‘post-COVID-19 condition’, and it can be a real problem – not least because doctors and researchers around the world are still struggling to agree on what it is. Does that sound familiar? Readers might be reminded of another condition, known as chronic fatigue syndrome, or myalgic encephalomyelitis, which produces extreme tiredness and can leave sufferers homebound, even bedbound, sometimes for the rest of their lives. To make matters worse, for years after reports of the syndrome first emerged in the 1980s, many people – even some doctors – simply refused to believe it was real. It was a psychological issue, they said, or worse, an excuse for malingering. Today, chronic fatigue syndrome, abbreviated to CFS/ME, is recognised as a devastating illness – although its exact cause remains unknown. There is no cure and precious few useful therapies. This comparison is particularly pertinent, because, as one medical journal recently put it, a significant number of people with long COVID have symptoms “suspiciously similar” to CFS/ME. These patients report reduced ability to perform usual daily routines, and extreme tiredness after physical or mental activity.

Subaru’s ‘Rex’ won’t disappoint By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Subaru WRX, often tagged as the “Rex”, is high-performance machine that’s been a longtime favourite with Australian drivers since it first arrived Downunder in 1994. The latest model is offered as a sedan and station wagon. It comes in four variants: base, RS, GT and tS, and two engine/transmission combinations. Our test car was the GT Sportwagon and we thoroughly enjoyed our week’s road test as it operates in all conditions in the country or the city with not only stunning performance but quite good comfort that makes it suited to family transport as well as a semi-track machine if you want to take to a driver’s day at a racing facility near you. Subaru service intervals for the latest WRX are now at 12 months/15,000 km. Up from the six months/12,500 km on the previous models.

Pumped up guards and the air intake on the top of the bonnet give a purposeful look to the new GT Sportwagon.

Infotainment Styling Pumped up guards and the air intake that sits on the top of the bonnet - thankfully not underneath and out of sight as was stupidly tried a few years back. Cladding garnishes that run all the way around the car are finished in a honeycomb texture and are said to minimise the disruption of air around the vehicle and therefore improving stability.

WRX’s infotainment system is controlled through a portrait 11.6-inch touchscreen that’s easy to see and use. You can use voice commands to operate the system but, as is too often the way, they don’t always get the message correctly. A six-speaker sound system is standard in the lower cost models. The WRX RS and tS sedan models have a a premium 10-speaker Harman/Kardon setup. We certainly enjoyed the quality of sound in our test car.

Interior The second row is reasonably spacious and comfortable thanks to the increased size of the new model compared to the previous WRXs. Subaru claims there’s increased space in the back thanks to its slightly larger dimensions over the outgoing model. As is often the way they are better suited to two people than three. Unless the driver is very tall and/or likes their seat set well back in which case the person behind them might find legroom is fairly tight. WRX Sportswagon 492 litres of cargo space with all seats in use. This increases to 909 litres with the second-row seats folded down in 40:20:40. There’s a temporary spare wheel under the boot floor.

Engines / Transmissions The engine is a 2.4-litre flat-four ‘boxer’ unit and drives through all four wheels by way of a six-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission. In CVT models a variable torque distribution centre differential has a nominal split of 45:55 biased towards to the rear wheels. The split can be altered depending on drive modes selected, with the WRX’s Sport settings have a rear-wheel bias.

Safety Airbags cover both rows of occupants and there are IsoFix child seat mounts on the outboard rear seats.

Standard features across the complete range include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-change assist and a rear-view camera. For some odd reason those with a manual gearbox don’t have autonomous emergency braking and emergency steering. We feel this may come in the future as Subaru has long had an emphasis on safety.

engine is pretty linear in its delivery and is delightful to sit behind. It’s happy to rev to close to its redline but we found it better to change a couple of hundred revs lower because it still drivers plenty of punch thank to the wide torque spread. Subaru says the WRX will use 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres of 95 RON petrol on the combined cycle. We averaged between nine and eleven litres per hundred around town and in the suburbs. This dropped to six to seven litres on easy paced country running. If you want to have a fang in the country - and of course you do! - it’s not too bad at nine to ten litres. Thanks to its four-wheel drive system the WRX Sportwagon is exceptional in its cornering. The chassis is nicely balanced and the steering wheel offers good feedback. Analogue dials with a relatively small driver-display screen which can toggle through various driving data as well as route guidance.

Summing Up With its affordable price and sharp performance the Subaru WRX has been a favourite of Australian drivers for more than two decades. This latest version is unlikely to dampen our enthusiasm one little bit.

Falcons happy with win

EDFL Taylors Lakes coach Charles Cuzzupi coached his final game in charge of the Essendon District Football League division 2 club on Saturday. The Lions announced on Thursday that Cuzzupi had decided he wasn’t going to continue coaching next season due to work and family commitments and wouldn’t coach out the season. Lions premiership coach Steve Burns has been appointed interim coach for the rest of the season. Cuzzupi’s time at the Lions ended with a 28-28 (186)-1.7 (13) win against Jacana. In other results, Burnside Heights lost to Coburg Districts and Keilor Park was too good for Northern Saints. In premier division, Keilor was smashed by Strathmore.

Jane Cook was also back on court and played three quarters, after a foot injury. The Falcons sit third on the ladder. Lind said the next few weeks was about setting things in place for finals. “Settling into combinations and having more versatility,” she said. “With the teams in the top four at the moment there’s a lot of diversity and you have to make sure we have the right match ups. “We still have a lot of work to do as we’re not where we want to be. There’s still that improvement to come. “Our on court chemistry and relationships on court will be the focus.” The under-19 side now sits on top of the table,

The Saints hope for strong finish to the season St Albans Saints hope the roadblocks that have derailed their season are out of the way in the National Premier League competition. The Saints jumped out of the blocks as they looked to rise up the ladder, but have won just one game in the last eight. Saints coach Kruni Razov said things had been tough in recent weeks. “We’ve had a lot of injuries the last six weeks,” he said. “We hit a bit of a wall, but we had a decent result on Friday night which was positive. “We got a couple of players back and hopefully we’ll get another two back in a week or two. “And we’ll see what happens with what we get in the transfer window.” Razov said their most recent match against the Bentleigh Greens was positive on two fronts. While they came away with a point in the 0-0 draw, the match was the club’s first home match under lights. He said the players and the spectators loved having a home game under lights and were keen

to have a few more next year. On field, Razov said they were hoping to add some extra depth before the transfer window closes. “We need someone up front who can score a few goals,” he said. “We would also like to get another

player down back.” The Saints were sitting in 11th spot heading into the weekend’s matches. Razov said frustrating is the best way to describe their season so far. “We lost six games on the trot,” he said. “But

we haven’t been that far away. “Mentally we have to be switched on.” The matches didn’t get much bigger than on Friday night, with the Saints facing the Melbourne Knights in the local derby, after deadline. “It’s a big game that everyone looks forward to each year,” Razov said before the game. “Everyone rocks up and there’s normally a couple of 1000 people at the game.” Razov said with the side sitting in a bit of no man’s land, the aim was to win as many games as possible in the run home. “With eight games to go, we are three games clear of the bottom two,” he said. “We want to get rid of that [the threat of relegation] in the next three rounds and make sure we are 100 per cent safe. “Finals, we haven’t really thought about. We would have to have to go on an unbelievable run. It’s possible, but not looking likely at this stage.” Tara Murray

Dream could come true By Tara Murray A dream could become a reality this week for Point Cook Centrals star Laura Elliott. The young defender is among those who are hoping to have their name called out at the AFLW draft on Wednesday night. Having started playing football when she was four, Elliott has loved the sport and always wanted to get to the top level. “To be honest I never actually thought I’d be here at the start of the year,” she said in the lead up to the draft. “It’s always been a dream and something I’ve wanted but I thought everything had to go right with my footy this year. To be able to get to this point as past years in [Western] Jets I hadn’t played my best footy but thankfully everything has gone good all with the help of my family and all the programs I’ve been lucky enough to be part of.” Elliott played a key role for the Western Jets as they became the toast of the NAB League Girls competition, winning the club’s first premiership. She was named in the team of the year and led the competition for intercept marks.

Elliott said she was still in disbelief about the premiership, which they won with a goal in the dying seconds of the grand final against Dandenong Stingrays. “I’d never actually played finals as a junior, always just missing out every year, so to play in a grand final at that level and with that team of girls and all those coaches was a feeling I can never describe,” she said. “The best part was the hard work and goals we set as a club paid off and we achieved something that no one in the league thought we could, not just the players on the field that night but everyone a part of that team. It was an amazing night and something I will always cherish.” While Elliott was unsure how she would go this season, she had been selected in the NAB AFL Academy for the best players in the country ahead of the season. She would then be selected for Vic Metro for the national championships. Both those are experiences Elliott will also remember. “Firstly, to get the chance to play in those teams with some top level players is still so surreal,” she said. “The experiences in those programs

were really fun and just an overall amazing experience. “Building new friendships and meeting new people was a good aspect of it all and also learning from the talented coaches really helped me a lot. Everyone was super nice and supportive and the community around it all was good to be a part of. “Playing against the best players and being teammates with them was some of the best footy experiences I’ve had, the talent and skills they have is crazy and no doubt a lot of them will dominate in the AFLW.” Elliott was also selected for the draft combine, but didn’t test on the night. The last couple of months, she’s been busy speaking with AFLW clubs. She said the whole experience and the next couple of weeks were so surreal. “All the clubs have been super nice and all seem like they are really good people and a good culture within,” she said. “I’m just super grateful for the chance to be interviewed no matter how it goes. “I’m a bit nervous [about the draft], but also very excited to see what happens with it all, if I get picked that will be so surreal but meanwhile just trying not to jinx myself.”

One of Western United’s brightest stars Ben Collins has re-signed for the next A-League men’s season. Collins who came through United’s academy earned a scholarship job with United for the 2021-22 season. A regular member of the matchday squad, the defender made his A-League debut in the final match of the regular season against Adelaide United. Collins said he can’t wait to continue his journey after an enjoyable first season. “I absolutely loved my first season with the senior team, which was obviously capped off with a championship win,” he said. “I’m really excited to sign on and keep working to build something really special with this group. “As a young defender, I am really lucky to work with some of the best defenders in the league in Leo (Lacroix), Nikolai (Topor-Stanley) and Tomoki (Imai), as well as (assistant coach) Hayden Foxe. “This club means a lot to me and I’m looking forward to continuing my development with Western United.” United general manager of football Mal Impiombato said he was delighted to see one of the clubs’ bright young prospects commit to the green and black. “We are excited to have Ben sign an extension with Western United,” he said. “We were delighted with his first season with the first team. The Saints hold onto the positives in tough year St Albans has seen a glimpse into the future in the Western Region Football League division 1 competition. The Saints have been hit hard by injuries in the first 10 rounds of the season and have played more players than they normally would for a full season. Coach Zammy Muhtari said it hadn’t been the season they were after. “It has been a struggle with a lot of injuries to start the season,” he said. “Availability of players has hurt us a bit. “We’re already played 41 players in the first 10 rounds. You’ve got players like Tim Jenkins who is out for the year, is a superstar. “Captain Jack Sims has only been back the last couple of rounds. When you start losing experience like that it hurts the side.” While the injuries and unavailability’s have hurt the progress of the side this year, with the team winning just three games from the first

10, it hasn’t been all bad. Muhtari said it had meant some players were getting opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise had. “We’ve seen some of the young kids,” he said. “We’ve got the next crop of kids coming through and they’re taking their opportunities with both hands and playing roles. “Cooper Ellis is 17 and has played about three games. We’ve got a 15-year-old Brodie Lyons-Jones who has been the 23rd player. “It’s a reward for some of the young kids and what they’ve done for the club. We’ve seen what the future lays ahead.” With several of those experienced players, who are out not returning this season, Muhtari said they will have to continue to go back to the drawing board for the rest of the year. He said more kids will get an opportunity, while some players in the reserves will get a go too.

“We have to keep playing the youth and some guys in the reserves will get more opportunities,” he said. “We’ll see how those guys go stepping up to the next level. Sitting seventh with eighth matches remaining, the Saints are still mathematically in with a chance to play finals. While Muhtari knows it will be hard, they won’t be giving up. They were set to face Spotswood on Saturday, after deadline. “We need to start winning ASAP or the door closes,” he said. “Hopefully we can create a few upsets. “It’s been quite a few years since we’ve beaten Spotswood. Devils not taking it easy By Tara Murray Keilor Park isn’t getting ahead of itself in the Essendon District Football League division 2 competition. The Devils were sitting second on the ladder, percentage behind Oak Park, with one loss after nine rounds. While they have become one of the teams to beat this season and the only team to beat Oak Park, Devils coach Paul Gucias said they know they can’t take things easy. “We’re pretty happy,” he said. “We still consider ourselves the chasers and not being hunted considering from how far back we’ve come the last few years. “Every game is a challenge. We’re not getting ahead of ourselves. No game is easy and I’ve told them teams will be coming at us with a different intent. “Nothing is different for us.” Gucias said while they were happy with how things were tracking, they were still learning every week. He highlighted their most recent game

against Coburg Districts as one match they will take plenty of. The Devils won by just two point. It;s the second game they won by less than two points. “In close games we’re getting over the line,” he said. “We keep reassessing where we are at after every game. Coburg Districts was totally different to last time we played them. “We got over the line, but we will look at what we need to do. We need to make the most of our opportunities. “On Saturday, we had a really good start and kicked a lot of points and gave them an opportunity.” Gucias said the composure they showed late in the game, including controlling the game in the final minutes of the game, showed what they were doing at training was working. As well as getting the results on field, the Devils have no long term injuries and nearly a full list to choose from. Former AFL-listed player Damien Cavka has missed the last couple of games, but is set to

return in the near future. Guicas knows that the luck with injuries can quickly change and could change things pretty quickly. The Devils face the bottom three teams in the next three rounds, starting with Northern Saints on Saturday, after deadline. Guicas said they won’t be taking their foot off the pedal despite where their opposition sits on the ladder. “We played Northern Saints and Jacana and then have week off before Taylors Lakes at lakes,” he said. “If we can win the next two games against Northern Saints and Jacana, the ladder speaks for itself and we’ll be clear on wins [from third]. The next three weeks are super important for us.” Overall, things are looking bright for the Devils whole senior program. The reserves sit on top of the ladder, while their thirds are sitting fourth. In other division 2 matches set for the weekend, Burnside Heights was set to face Coburg Districts and Taylors Lakes was to travel to Jacana.

Taylors Lakes has received a boost ahead of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season. The club announced that Aamir Raza would be returning for the 2022-23 season. Raza played for the Lions in the 2019-20 season and had signed to return for the 20-21 season before COVID-19 hit and international players were halted from coming out to play. In his one season at the Lions, he averaged 34 with the bat across all formats and took nine wickets. Raza returns to the blue and gold for the first time since the pandemic with the added responsibility of development-specialised assistant coach, playing an important role in our coaching panel structure, and reporting directly to senior coach Alex [Deuchar],” club vice-president Paul Wolfe said in a social media post. Since he was last in Australia he has played at Minster, Southall Park and Malden Wanderers cricket clubs, in the Kent and Surrey cricket leagues respectively. “We are expecting big things from Raza both on field and from coaching perspective, as he has also recently achieved his England Cricket Board (ECB) level 2 coaching qualification. “Raza will arrive in Melbourne in late September so he will be available from round one.” The Lions finished 15th in 202-21 winning three games, after not winning any the season before.
