Trees of life for koalas

Koala’s have a reputation for being lazy animals who spend their days sleeping and snacking on eucalyptus leaves. Koala expert Janine Duffy thinks people would be surprised to learn otherwise. “They’re so agile, no one thinks this, they think they’re like sloths,” Janine said. “They’re incredibly strong and fast moving.” Janine is the president of the Koala Clancy Foundation, an independent charity that advocates for protection of wild koalas. In the last five years, the foundation has dedicated countless hours to planting trees in Little River, as the lack of vegetation in the area makes it difficult for koalas who use trees as a way to travel between the You Yangs and Brisbane Ranges. “I’ve seen koalas crossing the open paddocks, and in the scattered trees near the Little River, looking for better habitat,” Janine said. “In 2017 Koala Clancy Foundation set a target to plant koala trees along the entire length of the Little River, from just north of Little River township to Staughton Vale in the Brisbane Ranges.” Volunteers have since planted 24,362 trees along the Little River, with another 10,800 expected this year. Dohertys Road upgrade By Fatima Halloum Residents say it’s notorious for flooding and “ridiculously dangerous” but Wyndham council has confirmed Dohertys Road is finally set for an upgrade. The road, particularly between Tarneit and Derrimut Road, has received significant criticism from community members. Wyndham resident of 20 years, Peter Savic, said he actively avoids the road and is “really surprised” there hasn’t been a fatality there. “It used to be my preferred route but it’s
gotten too busy now and it’s too dangerous,” Mr Savic said. “It’s an 80-kilometre stretch of road with multiple dips and potholes and it floods, it’s absolutely shameful that they’ve neglected it like they have.” Mr Savic said all the road needs is “a little bit of rain” for it to flood. “Because we get regular rain events, the dam either side of the road is already holding a lot of water, it’s maybe 10 or 15 centimeters below the road,” Mr Savic said.
“If it was out in the back blocks of Victoria somewhere you’d go ‘OK understandable’, but it’s on the fringe of a major urban area, it’s just ridiculous.” Wyndham council acting director Peter McKinnon said council is undertaking pre-design studies for the road. “This project includes developing a concept plan for a realigned Dohertys Road and bridge over Dry Creek (between Sapling Boulevard and Rosso Drive), to remove the flooding issues associated with the low creek
crossings,” Mr McKinnon said. Councillor Josh Gilligan says residents are “quite rightly” outraged and council has prioritised the project “We’ve heard them and that’s why we’re getting on with making sure that the designs are done, and then getting on with construction,” he said. “It’s quite a technical, complex design because if you think about it, bridges are not something that councils ordinarily do. It’s a really specialised space.”

Nominations in for federal poll When residents in Wyndham head to a polling booth on Saturday, May 21 to elect the next government, they will weigh up a number of candidates and local issues. The City of Wyndham sits mainly in the electoral division of Lalor, which encompasses Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Manor Lakes, Wyndham Vale, Mambourin and Cororoc. Remaining suburbs share boundaries with neighbouring electorates. Point Cook, Williams Landing, Laverton and Truganina crossover with the division
of Gellibrand. People living in Little River intersect with the division of Corio and parts of Mount Cottrell and Truganina are in the electorate of Gorton. Labor’s Joanne Ryan has represented Lalor since 2013 and, in the 2019 federal election, Ms Ryan drew a two party preferred result of 62.41 per cent. Despite a 1.78 per cent swing towards the Liberal party at the last election, Lalor is considered a safe Labor seat as it has been held by the party for all except three years
since its inception. There are currently eight candidates running against Ms Ryan. Ravi Gaddipati is representing the Liberal Party, IT support officer Jack Boddeke is running for The Greens, United Australia Party has put forward Juanita Coral Paterson and Aijaz Mounuddin will stand as an independent candidate. Dancing duo prove age is no barrier At 79 and 75 years old, you’d expect Marika and Mark Tittl to be winding down and enjoying the calm luxuries in life. Instead the award-winning couple are still tearing up the dance floor, teaching residents in Wyndham everything they know about ballroom dancing. “We were born in Czech Republic and arrived in Australia in 1982,” Mark said. ‘When we arrived, Marika wanted me to go dancing, but I had never danced before so we suggested that we are going somewhere and taking lessons in dancing.” A few years later, their teachers encouraged them to participate in dance contests and Mark and Marika won multiple national and inter-national championships throughout their careers. As dancing became more physically demanding and the pair became affected by injuries, Mark and Marika chose to redirect their skills to help others. “After 30 years of competition dancing and being really on the top of the classes and the competitions, we have so much knowledge that we would like to give it to somebody else,” Marika said. The couple were inspired to teach weekly classes at The Grange Community Centre when they noticed the municipality was lacking the service. “In Werribee and surrounding suburbs, we just wanted to go dancing somewhere and couldn’t find anything,” Mark said. “The idea is, you can’t tell anybody ‘I can’t dance’ if you haven’t tried,” Mark said. The couple encourage people of all ages and fitness levels to attend. “It’s so beautiful if all the people get out of their houses and their retirement villages and do a little bit of salsa dancing,” Marika said. “You’ll meet new friends and have a nice social time, in the dancing world everybody is really friendly.” Details: 8742 8000
Restrictions eased further As vaccination rates continue to rise and the Omicron wave begins to subside, Victoria will move into winter with less COVID-19 restrictions. A number of changes to the pandemic orders were made last Friday, April 22 at 11.59pm. Masks are no longer be required in primary schools, early childhood, hospitality and retail settings. Close contacts do not need to quarantine – provided they wear a mask indoors and avoid sensitive settings, they will also need to produce five negative rapid tests over the seven days that would previously have been the quarantine period. Patrons are no longer be required to have two doses or show their vaccination status before entering a venue. All visitor restrictions in hospitals have been removed, except for mask requirements. International travellers who are symptom-free are recommended but not required to get a PCR or rapid test on arrival, and unvaccinated travellers no longer complete seven days quarantine. Pre-departure tests for unvaccinated air crew have also been lifted. People are exempt from testing or quarantine for 12 weeks if they’ve had COVID-19. Some remaining restrictions include isolation requirements for COVID positive individuals, and existing two dose and three dose mandates for workers. Face coverings are still required on public transport and at airports, and in sensitive health environments, aged care, and justice settings.

Creating leaders of the future Wyndham residents will soon be the first students to take part in The Gordon Institute of TAFE’s executive leadership program. Fifteen students from the municipality will follow a six-month immersive and innovative leadership program developed to build key skills that empower and enable emerging leaders. The Gordon’s executive director commercial business Jane Perera said the program will be delivered by facilitators who have extensive experience in various sectors. “Leadership competencies are changing rapidly and the past is not the future. Challenges and opportunities, never seen before, abound

along with the need for business success in existing environments,” Ms Perera said. “Leaders need to create, innovate, cultivate and implement robust, yet flexible strategies.” Ms Perera said The Gordon conducted thorough consultation with industry and
community to understand the areas that needed support. “All sector groups declared a clear need for greater leadership capability within their organisations, with many struggling through the COVID-19 related challenges imposed upon them,” Ms Perera said. “The gaps in leadership capability severely hamstrung the delivery of many organisations’ strategic objectives, diluting their results.” Ms Perera said The Gordon listened closely and “as a key education partner” has now invested in the program to Wyndham residents achieve their goals. “Extensive research further confirms
Family runs together to fight cancer When Melanie Smiley’s husband Tim was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 she didn’t know who to turn to. The mum from Manor Lakes said she sometimes found it difficult to voice her fears to family and friends. “Everyone would say, ‘hey Mel, be strong for Tim and the kids,’ and I’m like ‘but who’s strong for me?’,” Melanie said. “[The doctors] didn’t give us any support material or anything like that, and a friend of mine who works with the Salvation Army in Wyndham, I remember speaking to her and I said ‘I don’t know what to do’ and she said, ‘I’m coming to your house’.” Melanie’s friend brought her a bag of pamphlets from the Cancer Council and the two perused through information about the assistance available. “I came across the helpline, and that was the first call I made,” Melanie said. “They were like godsends because it’s hard, you don’t know what the future holds and so they guided me through the different support services they have.” After Tim underwent chemotherapy and radiation, Melanie decided it was important for her to give back because she knew how it felt to be on the other end of the helpline. “I just went on the website to have a look at what I can do to help so I came across relay and I thought it looked like fun,” Melanie said. The relay for life is a Cancer Council initiative that involves teams walking laps around a track to raise funds for people impacted by cancer. Melanie and Tim’s three kids get involved, as well as their friends, family and colleagues. Tim’s type of cancer is too rare for doctors to ever say he’s in remission, but Melanie says he’s doing really well. “He’s actually the unit controller of the Wyndham SES and he also is a team member for the local CFA,” Melanie said. “He has treated this like it’s a second lease on life, his love of helping people is just phenomenal.”

The competition encourages residents to maintain their nature strip to uplift the presentation of the city and beautify the environment. Council says nature strips enhance the natural settings of the neighbourhood, visually soften the effect of harder surfaces such as roads and footpaths and can add value to homes and people’s general wellbeing. Residents should ensure their nature strips allow suitable space for the location and emptying of bins and plants do not exceed 500mm in height to ensure good line of sight for motorists and pedestrians. The use of pebbles or loose gravel, synthetic turf or plants with spikes or prickles is strongly discouraged. Winning participants will receive a voucher for the All Green Nursery in Hoppers Crossing. The municipality will be split across nine areas, giving more people the chance to win. Participating residents are encouraged to read the rules before applying. Competition closes May 9 and winners will be announced on May 17.

Two sporting groups in Wyndham will welcome a funding boost after being announced as the recipients of Savana by AVID property group’s sponsorship and grants program. Manor Lakes Football Club and Wyndham Netball Association will each receive a $5000 donation to help get the clubs back in the game after two years of COVID-19 restrictions Club president Shane White said said Manor Lakes Football would use the grant to launch two new teams in the under-16s and the under-18s age group. “With our 2020 and 2021 seasons constantly stopping and starting, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it challenging, but 2022 is looking more positive,” White said. “Community sport is such a great way for kids to get away from the screens, be active and meet people in their community, and provides social and mental health benefits for all players.”
White said the money will assist with recouping items taken or damaged during a break-in at the club late last year. “Savana’s sponsorship will play a big role in getting these new teams off the ground, providing money for new jumpers, equipment and match and training balls,” he said. “We’re looking forward to seeing our teams in the finals in 2022 and hopefully we get to enjoy a full season.” Wyndham Netball Association president Fiona Cooke said funding would be invested in the development of players and coaches. “Netball is a fantastic team sport and watching our players get back to what they love, as well as to see all the new player enquiries coming through each week, is just wonderful for the association,” she said. “The grant funds will help us host the Netball Victoria Central West Regional Championships in May, as well as to establish our academy program in the lead up to championships.”
Police are appealing for public assistance in locating a gold necklace valued at $36,000 taken from a jewellery store in Werribee earlier this month. Investigators have been told a man entered the store at a shopping centre on Heaths Road at 10am, Thursday, April 7, and asked to view a nine-carat gold 55cm curb necklace. The man left the store without paying and drove away in a black Nissan Navara utility allegedly displaying the false restriction plates A9B 9AC. Police have released images of a man that may be able to assist with the investigation. He is described as Caucasian, 170 centimetres tall, with short dark hair and a medium build.
O-negative blood needed The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has made a call for people, including those living in Wyndham, with O-negative blood to donate over the next fortnight, as consecutive long weekends threaten supplies. Lifeblood said that its own reserves of the emergency blood type – needed by accident and trauma patients – have dropped to their lowest point in 12 months. O-negative makes up 15 per cent of hospital orders across the country while fewer than 7 per cent of the population have that blood type.

Volunteer and help a needy child The Point Cook branch of Voice, Interests and Education of Women (VIEW) is calling on residents to consider dedicating their time to improving needy children’s education during National Volunteer Week. VIEW is a women’s group which supports The Smith Family, an Australian charity which aims to support disadvantaged kids and enable a better future for young children. A key theme for this year’s National Volunteer Week (May 16-22) is bringing people together through volunteering, which Point Cook VIEW club president Ella Wood
said is more important than ever before. “Volunteering is a great way to get back out there, make friends, and feel like you’re really making a difference to the lives of young people and their families,” she said. “Last year, COVID meant we couldn’t have that hands-on connection with the community, which was really hard for a lot of people.” There are 300 VIEW clubs across the nation, and more than 1520 kids currently being supported. Members of the organisation assist those in
need by community fundraising, spreading awareness and volunteering their time. Members of Point Cook VIEW club volunteer by sponsoring six students, but Ms Wood said there are “many opportunities” to help people out. “While volunteering provides a fantastic opportunity to give back, it’s also about building a community and support network that makes such a positive difference to everyone involved,” Ms Wood said. “We are always looking for women to join us in supporting The Smith Family and we’d
encourage anyone interested to get in touch and come along to our next meeting to learn more about VIEW.” The group meets from 10am-noon on the first Wednesday of each month at the Point Cook Community Learning Centre, 1-21 Cheetham Street, Point Cook. Sheru joins the pride A roar-ing new resident will join the gorillas, hippopotamus and cheetahs on the African River Trail at Werribee Open Range Zoo. The five-year-old male lion is named Sheru which means ‘lion’ in Hindi and arrived last month from the new Sydney Zoo in Western Sydney. Sheru joins two lionesses, Nilo and Asali, but the zoo says Sheru is easily distinguished from the females by his impressive golden mane and his particularly loud vocalisations that usually increase during rainfall. Acting African River Trail Life Science Manager, Ben Gulli, said Sheru’s arrival marks a new era for lion conservation at the zoo. “It’s very exciting to have Sheru join the lion pride and establish a new breeding group here,” Mr Gulli said. “Werribee Open Range Zoo has been the home to three litters of lion cubs during the past seven years and we hope
we can continue to support the conservation of this precious species in years to come. “Sheru has settled in seamlessly and we can’t wait to see his confident and curious nature shine through over the coming days.” Sheru is currently undertaking one month in quarantine, however zoo visitors can catch him inquisitively exploring the back area of the lion habitat. The zoo says lions are classified as vulnerable in the wild, with their species in decline as a result of hunting and habitat destruction. It’s estimated as few as 23,000 individuals remain in sub-Saharan Africa. The zoo says their lions form part of an international and regional breeding program to maintain a genetically diverse pride that can support conservation of wild lion populations. Pausing to remember at dawn As dawn seeped through the sky in Wyndham on Monday, April 25, hundreds of residents both young and old gathered solemnly on Anzac Day to commemorate lives lost in war. The service was hosted by Werribee RSL Sub-branch president Daryl Ryan who thanked community members for attending the first ceremony to be held since COVID-19 restrictions suspended public commemorations in 2020 and 2021. Speeches were presented by mayor Peter Maynard, and two students from MacKillop College who spoke of the importance of mateship, and the sacrifices made by the Anzacs. Local politicians attended the service and joined community group representatives in placing wreaths at the Werribee Cenotaph.

Boost for west job seekers

ALP Galvin Park pledge Werribee’s Galvin Park Sexton Pavilion will be redeveloped if the Labor Party is elected at this year’s federal election. Lalor MP Joanne Ryan recently announced that her party would commit $500,000 to the redevelopment of the pavilion if successful at the upcoming election. The pavilion is home for the Werribee Centrals Football and Netball teams, a local club running since the 1970s. Working alongside Wyndham council and the Werribee Centrals sports and youth club, Ms Ryan said they would deliver the full plans the club has developed.
“The Galvin Park complex is at the heart of the Werribee Community. This commitment is an investment in the club, an investment in the local community and investment in a better future for Lalor,” she said. Upgrades would include demolishing the old change-rooms and replacing them with new facilities, the construction of updated umpires rooms, medical resources and committee meeting spaces. The redevelopment will also include construction of an additional secondary storey to the existing complex, which will feature community and social spaces, a kitchen, and
toilet amenities that will then be available for neighbourhood use. Werribee Centrals Football and Netball Club president Chris Kopelke said the team was excited to finally receive support for the project. “This has been eight years in the making and will give the general and sporting community of Werribee a great facility to meet their ongoing needs,” Mr Kopelke said. “This announcement of funding means the difference between having the new facilities built in the immediate future and bringing them into the 21st century, or being delayed due to funding constraints with our club contribution.”

A not-for-profit employment organisation is bringing its services to the western suburbs to support job seekers who are struggling to find work. MEGT will be bringing its Enhanced Services (ES) employment program to the west in July, helping those struggling to find employment develop the necessary skills that meet the needs of employers in the area. The Enhanced Services program is one of the services provided under the federal government’s new Workforce Australia (WFA). MEGT employment services general manager Paul Bennett said the organisation is looking forward to providing its employment services to residents of Melbourne’s west. “We look forward to working with employers to understand their needs in terms of building a productive workforce by linking them up with skilled, motivated and job-ready workers”, he said. “MEGT has 40 years of experience assisting job seekers and employers from all types of backgrounds find work or workers, including apprenticeship and traineeship positions as well as delivering specific programs which support survivors of domestic violence and young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. “We are committed to providing employers with a skilled and diverse workforce and continuing to promote the success of our valued jobseekers, just as we have for the last 40 years”.

Stop soldiering on and act now By Christopher Carter, CEO of North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network The coronavirus pandemic caused a lot of people to fall ill – but not all of them because they caught COVID-19. Behind the stark statistics of daily case numbers, hospitalisations and deaths there is another story. We could call it the pandemic’s long shadow. When the first wave hit, and every day since, thousands of people across our region decided to put off seeking help for other health matters. Doctors call this sort of thing “deferred care” – the decision to delay seeing a GP about something new, or to opt out of a blood test or an x-ray, or to avoid a prescription renewal. No one knows precisely how many people have done this, but experience overseas suggests it’s a big number – and this could cause trouble down the track, for patients and the health system. There is a single, important message that all GPs, nurses and specialists agree on: don’t put care off any longer. Talk to your doctor, have a chat, act now. As far back as late 2020, US researchers started calling the rise in deferred care the “hidden harm” of COVID-19. The situation has only worsened since then, but by how much is difficult to know. Doctors in general practice and hospitals have seen a drop in presentations for a wide range of non-coronavirus matters. For some conditions, such as flu and some other infectious diseases, the dip was probably because movement restrictions, masking and lockdowns meant that fewer people were getting poorly. It is very unlikely, however, that some other things, such as heart disease, diabetes,

digestive disorders, sexually transmitted diseases and cancers have become less common. Far more likely, people have been delaying routine screening, tests,cancelling appointments, or simply trying to tough it out. But why? For many, clinics and hospitals are seen as high-risk environments for catching COVID-19. Others have delayed things because they were isolating, caring for sick family members, couldn’t afford particular

tests or medications – or because the whole damn pandemic experience left them feeling anxious and depressed. If you’ve had any of these experiences, please know that you’re far from alone! One of the big problems with putting off treatment for what seem like minor matters, however, is that they can suddenly escalate into major problems requiring a stay in hospital.
For you, and for the hospitals, it’s a much better idea now to go make an appointment at your general practice,or have those tests you’ve been putting off. If you need an updated plan to manage your asthma, bronchitis or COPD, a GP respiratory clinic can help. Better a doctor’s office, or a telehealth screen, after all, than an emergency department. Do it now, for everybody’s sake – but especially yours.

New mum faces a battle for life It’s supposed to be the happiest time in a pregnant woman’s life, bringing a healthy newborn baby home as a mum for the first time. For Katie Potts, the elation was abruptly and painfully cut short. Fatima Halloum talks to Katie about an illness that affects an estimated 15,540 Australians a year.

ot many people would describe being pregnant as “really enjoyable”, but Werribee’s Katie Potts does. “All my blood tests and observations and everything was all perfect the whole way through,” she said. “I barely had morning sickness, I was energetic, I went to the Foo Fighters a week before [my son] was born, It was the smoothest pregnancy you could possibly ask for.” On March 14, Katie brought her son Magnus into the world and instantly became enraptured with him. “I was in that newborn bubble, he’s everything you could dream of, just everything you want when you give birth.” Katie said. The bubble popped a week later, when Katie began feeling unwell.

Full house at Mercy By Alesha Capone Demand for birthing suites at Werribee Mercy Hospital has reached capacity. The hospital welcomed 3833 babies in 2020, slightly lower than the 3888 babies delivered there in 2019. Health services chief executive Jason Payne said Werribee Mercy Hospital’s birthing numbers had remained steady over the past two years because the birthing suites were unable to accommodate any more expectant mums. He said some pregnant women within the Werribee Mercy Hospital catchment are

In November’s state budget, $4.8 million was allocated to finalise planning for the third stage of the hospital’s development. “We have acknowledged publicly the funding was a clear sign the voices of the people of the west of Melbourne are being heard and government is committed to meeting a major upgrade,” Mr Payne said. Mercy Health Group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s construction required $300 million in funding “to ensure the people of Wyndham receive the level and quality of health services they deserve and need”.

birthing suites, additional post-natal beds, and other ante and post-natal facilities, accompanied by additional midwifery and nursing staff. “Based on demand for existing maternity services, it is projected that Werribee Mercy Hospital would be well placed to meet an anticipated increase in demand of up to 30 per cent more babies in the western metro area.” Mr Payne said Mercy Health has been working with the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and the Department of Health and Human Services since 2016 to prepare for the future needs of Werribee Mercy.

“I thought it was potentially postnatal depression just because … I just had a baby and emotions are going everywhere and hormones and all that sort of stuff,” she said. But as Katie grew weaker day by day she began to sense what she experienced couldn’t just be normal new parent exhaustion. “I still kind of thought it was in my head and then three weeks after he was born, I came to stay with my parents and that’s when we went to the doctors,” she said.

she said. “My initial thought was ‘cry’ and then I was like, ‘alright, I’m gonna beat this’ because I have to. I’ve got this brand new baby who needs his mum and I’ve got so much life to live.” Katie said she’s tried to keep positive and believes she can beat the odds. “Obviously, there’s been some moments of tears but mostly just trying to stay positive because I think if your mind gives up, your body sort of follows,” she said. “Life is just
beginning really. I’ve got so much to live for, not just for Magnus but for everyone including myself.” To give Katie and her family physical and financial respite, her friend Jess started a GoFundMe page to help raise money. In the seven days the page has been online, Katie has received more than $35,000 in donations and support from loved ones and empathetic strangers.
“It’s so humbling, there’s been such an outpouring from my work, from my friends, from my family, people that I haven’t heard from since primary school, I’ve been lost for words really,” Katie said. Jess has known Katie for more than 10 years and knows from when her own father was unwell how much of toll financial stress can have. “I just thought if there’s anything that can make life easier for Katie and for Ben and especially for Magnus, that’s something I knew that a lot of people would want to do,” Jess said. “So many people, I’m sure have said to her, ‘if there’s anything you need’ and I just wanted to give people an avenue to help and to do something.” Jess said although the support has been overwhelming, it wasn’t surprising. “I knew that there would be a lot of people that wanted to be there for her but I think it’s still quite overwhelming to see where it’s gotten so far,” Jess said. Katie says she hopes people learn from her story and don’t hesitate to seek professional advice. “I’m very diligent with my health and there were really no signs that I was unwell. That makes it really hard, because bowel screening in Australia is not until you’re 50,” Katie said. “But I just think even if people have a little niggle, don’t question it, just go to the doctor.” Katie encourages people to live their lives like tomorrow isn’t a given. “Especially the last two years when we’ve been in lockdown, it’s been a hard fog to come out of but I think life is not guaranteed, and I just want people to get out there and take all those opportunities and look after themselves,” she said.

Katie’s blood test results showed irregular liver function and she was rushed to hospital. “They thought there was an infection, for three days they were looking for infection and then they sent me for a CT and that’s when the bad news came,” she said. The bad news was a diagnosis that was both inoperable and incurable. “I was in disbelief when they said ‘unfortunately we’ve found that you’ve got cancer’. In my head, I was kind of like ‘it’s only a little bit of cancer, like it would be operable and it’d be fine’, but then obviously, my world was turned upside down pretty quickly,” Katie said. Katie’s stage four bowel cancer had spread to her liver and she would need to undergo 12 rounds of chemotherapy. “I just had a baby and was ready to start the next stage of our life. It was pretty devastating,”

United on track to make history By Max Hatzoglou Western United has secured a spot in the A-League Men finals and set themselves up to make history this season, after a promising 2-0 win over Macarthur in Tasmania last Tuesday. The win puts United two points behind Melbourne City in second position on the ladder with a game in hand, giving them a chance to finish on top for the first time since joining the competition in 2019. Coach John Aloisi was excited about what his team can achieve this season. “It’s exciting to be where we are, that’s for sure,” Aloisi said post-game. “We know that we’re definitely going to finish in the top three now with the amount of points we have and we’re only two points behind City with a game in hand. “Obviously the next game is the most important because that’s the Mariners away

in 10 days time so it gives us a bit of a break mentally and physically to prepare for that game. “At the beginning of preseason, we said that we want to be very competitive, that we want to be there fighting for something at the end of the season, and we’ve given ourselves an
opportunity now with one week to go and three games to play in that week. “We will make sure that we’re ready for the next game against the Mariners, but also enjoy this game here and the last four days that we’ve had in Tasmania, because it was big for us.” Prior to United’s most recent back to back wins in Tasmania, it suffered a shock 4-1 defeat to Wellington Phoenix in Ballarat which left question marks on the team’s potential this season. Aloisi spoke about the importance of his team responding to the loss. “A lot of doubt crept in, not so much in the team, more on the outside about, are we good enough to really compete when we lost 4-1 to Wellington, but the boys wanted to show that they are good enough and the reaction has been brilliant from them,” he said. The former Socceroo also said the loss was a good wake up call heading into finals.
“You don’t want to be going into the finals, just scraping through and just getting there,” he said. “We want to go there in good form so we needed that poor performance to actually go, ‘you know what, we need to make sure that we’re focused each game, preparing well the whole week’. “And we do, just that game we let her intensity down a little bit so that’s why it was so pleasing the last two games and at times tonight, we needed to dig deep and we showed that resilience that we showed earlier in the season. “So we were happy, we know that we’re going to go into that final week in good form and feeling good about the way we’re performing.” After finishing last season with eight-straight losses, Aloisi also credited his players for creating an “amazing” culture this season and for buying into the new system as they strive to win their first title.
Bulldogs’ brave fight on field after tragic week Following the Western Bulldogs’ one-point nail biting loss to Adelaide on Saturday in Ballarat, coach Luke Beveridge revealed it had been a challenging week for the club with star forward Mitch Wallis tragically losing his mother-in-law in a car accident. Beveridge said Wallis’ mother-in-law passed away on Thursday, April 21. At the time Wallis’ partner Emily was a week overdue with the couple’s second child. Wallis decided to take time off from playing and allowed his coach to share the news with the media on Saturday. “It’s been a challenging week for the group
and for the club,” Beveridge said. “It’s been a really traumatic week for the families and, obviously, your football is like your second home and second family, everyone feels that and is really emotional around what is happening with Mitch and Emily and their families.” Mitch and Emily Wallis later announced the birth of son, William, on Sunday, April 24. Beveridge also revealed that development coach and former AFL footballer Travis Varcoe had lost his mum in recent days. Lachie Hunter was named out for personal reasons this week alongside Wallis.

Goal kicking accuracy lets Werribee down By Max Hatzoglou Werribee led for the majority of the game against Carlton but wasn’t able to hold off a last quarter charge, going down by 19-points at Avalon Airport Oval in the Victorian Football League on Saturday. Carlton only found the lead once for a short period in the first three quarters as Werribee took charge, but could not execute in front of goal as they kicked 3.7 in the first quarter and 10.14 to Carlton 14.9 for the game. Carlton grabbed the opportunity to take home the points by kicking the last five goals of the game. Werribee coach Michael Barlow was disappointed with his side’s inability to make the most of their early dominance on the scoreboard. “We really murdered some opportunities in the first quarter,” Barlow said post-game. “It particularly felt like we really owned the game across the first 20-30 minutes. “We were really untidy with the ball, particularly in the first 15 minutes of the first quarter, so the ability to capitalise on dominance of possession and ground position, we couldn’t do it so you leave the door open as we did, and slowly but surely a class side like Carlton pegged us back. “Missed opportunities early, it would’ve been nice to take them and really put some scoreboard pressure on. “At the end of the day we don’t, leave ourselves vulnerable and the result goes the other way.” Werribee’s Dominic Brew, who picked up 19 possessions and seven tackles for the game, said his side needed to polish off the hard work in front of goal to bring their game together. “It’s a hard one to swallow because we really should have won that,” Brew said. “If you look at all the team stats and that, we were pretty similar if not on top in a few categories there. “There’s promising signs there, we just gotta put it all together. I felt like we were right in the game towards the end and then just a couple of missed opportunities.

six match against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Sunday. Werribee and its opposition will both be striving to pick up a third win on Sunday.
