Young minds get creative Budding young Brimbank artists honed their creative skills last week as part of a series of visual arts workshops. The Gallery Is Me workshops, which were held at Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House from April 18-22, encouraged kids aged nine to 14 years old to experiment with a broad range of materials to create works of art. The artworks will be exhibited on May 7 from 12.30-3pm. Previous The Gallery Is Me participants were invited to take part in this year’s workshops as mentors for new participants. Workshop facilitator Lise Kaufman said the young artists were encouraged to lead their own learning experiences during the workshops and were encouraged to create artworks that expressed their sense of self. Kitchen upgrade rejected By Laura Michell An “11th hour” bid to fund a kitchen and toilet upgrade at a “rapidly growing” sports club as part of Brimbank council’s draft 2022-23 budget has been rejected. Councillors Virginia Tachos and Jae Pappalia sought to include a kitchen and toilet upgrade for the Keilor Sports Club in the draft budget during council’s meeting on Tuesday, April 19. Council officers had recommended the project be funded in future years, listing it as priority number five among similar projects. Cr Pappalia argued that the project deserved to be funded as the club was growing at a rapid
rate and the current facilities did not meet its needs. Cr Tachos said the current kitchen and toilet were not “fit for purpose”, adding that she and some of her colleagues had been talking to the club about the need for the upgrade for the past two years. “Kitchens are the foundation of every sports club,” Cr Tachos said. “This club is growing every single year and it needs a kitchen that will accommodate it. Once it does have that kitchen it will be able to generate more income, and it will also be safer. “ … This needs to prioritised.” However, the proposal was narrowly
defeated, with councillors voting six to five to not include the project in the 2022-23 budget. Cr Trung Luu said he was “totally against” one sporting club being prioritised over others at the “11th hour”, against the advice of council officers. “That is not right,” he said. “One sporting club is not more important than another.” The draft budget, which is open for public consultation from Thursday, April 21 until Thursday, May 19, includes a $61.4 million capital works program. Council is also proposing to lift rates by an average of 1.75 per cent, in keeping with the
state government’s rates cap. The draft budget allocated $11.4 million to sports facility upgrades, including $2.23 million for the Lloyd Reserve soccer-cricket pavilion upgrade and $750,000 for the Lionheart Reserve tennis pavilion upgrade at Taylors Lakes; $26 million for roads, footpaths, drainage upgrades and pedestrian facilities and links; and $1.2 million for town centre upgrades. The council also proposes to spend $5.6 million on playgrounds, parks and gardens, and $1.8 million to improve community facilities, including the redevelopment of Deer Park library.

Pokies indoor playground denied By Laura Michell Brimbank council has rejected a request for a permanent indoor children’s playground at the St Albans Sports Club amid fears it would expose children and their families to gambling. The club, which is on council-owned land in Kings Park Reserve, has a temporary indoor playground and is home to 35 electronic gaming machines (EGMs). Council previously rejected a request for an indoor playground at the site in 2016. In a letter to council, the club said the
permanent indoor playground would make the club “more inclusive” for “families and females”. The letter noted that seven of the 15 gaming venues in Brimbank have children’s play areas, including Green Gully Soccer Club which is on council-owned land. However, a report to a council meeting on Tuesday, April 19, recommended councillors reject the proposal, with council officers finding that the negative impacts of the playground would “outweigh” the positive impacts, “particularly the likelihood of increased exposure of EGMs to children and families”.
The report said council had a harm reduction strategy when it came to gambling, with Brimbank recording the highest poker machines losses in the state, with a record $14.98 million lost in December 2021. Cr Virginia Tachos said she feared approving a playground at a venue with poker machines would encourage gambling and normalise the behaviour for children. “In this report, the evidence shows that gaming venues with children’s play areas recorded a 22.6 per cent increase in average daily loses [between 2020-21 an 2019-20] …
compared to a 6.5 per cent increase for those without a children’s play area,” she said. Crs Trung Luu, Sam David and Bruce Lancashire voted against the recommendation, believing the playground would be beneficial to the club. Cr Luu said the club had worked proactively with council to develop a gambling harm minimisation program and said the officers’ recommendation to knock back the playground proposal was unfair. He said the council was “punishing” the club despite its work to reduce the impact of gambling on its patrons.
Crime briefs Theft charges A man and a woman from St Albans have been charged as part of an investigation into the alleged organised theft from shops. Police executed two warrants in St Albans and one in Maidstone on Monday, April 18, recovering baby formula, beauty products, vitamins and other personal care products, Victoria Police said in a statement. Six people were arrested, with an 18-year-old woman from Sunshine, a 47-year-old woman from Kings Park, a 33-year-old woman from Maidstone and a 33-year-old man from Maidstone all released pending further inquires. A 32-year-old St Albans man was charged with handling stolen goods and possessing tobacco products with intent to defraud revenue. A 37-year-old St Albans woman was charged with handling stolen goods, negligently possessing proceeds of crime and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
Braybrook hit-run Police are appealing for public assistance following a hit-run collision in Braybrook on Sunday, April 17. It is believed a car collided with a 2012 white and blue Suzuki motorcycle on Essex Street near Ashley Street just after 8pm. The car did not stop and was seen driving away from the scene, police said. The male rider, a 60-year-old Narre Warren man was taken to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries. Walking for breast cancer research Caroline Springs residents are being encouraged to lace up their runners this Mother’s Day and walk, run or jog around Caroline Springs Lake to raise money for breast cancer research. Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the Caroline Springs Mother’s Day Classic event, with 300 people attending last year’s inaugural event. While this is only the second year a Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic has been held in Caroline Springs, the classic itself marks its 25th anniversary in 2022. Caroline Springs organiser Nicole Oborne, who is also a member of the Mother’s Day
Classic board, said the local event was born out of the COVID lockdowns. “During COVID, we had to pivot to other arrangements and I just thought that it was an opportunity to have a local event,” she said. “It was amazing. It was a beautiful sunny day and it was amazing to see the community get behind it.” Ms Oborne has been involved with the Mother’s Day Classic for 11 years after joining the superannuation industry. “When I young, my aunty passed away with breast cancer … and then I started working in the superannuation sector some 23 years ago
and I found out about the Mother’s Day Classic that was founded by Women in Super … I loved the concept. I could see the positive impact it was having,” she said. Ms Oborne said the classic has raised $39.5 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation since it started in 1998. The Caroline Springs Mother’s Day Classic is on Sunday, May 8, from 7.30-10am. Mentor a school friend Luis Rojas hopes his volunteer work through EdConnect is helping to make a difference in the life of a young Brimbank pupil. Mr Rojas joined EdConnect – an organisation offering one-on-one mentoring to students in need and assistance in the classroom with subjects such as numeracy, reading or science – because he wanted to give back to the community. He meets the pupil for about one hour per week at school to offer social and emotional support. “He is a great kid, very smart, teachers say he can be disruptive, but he has a heart of gold. He speaks very well of his family and goals in life,” Mr Rojas said. “I usually meet him at the classroom and we
go out into the yard and kick a football or sit in the library and play a game. “I am there as a friend, I just guide him to reflect on his actions so that he can make better decisions.” EdConnect liaison officer Rhonda Velkovski said volunteers helped build up students’ self-esteem and engagement at school. “Luis has been a positive, caring and committed role model and has made a real and lasting difference to this primary school, staff and students and the community as a whole,” she said. Cairnlea development concerns By Laura Michell Brimbank council has identified a number of issues with a proposed redevelopment of the former Albion Explosives Factory site in Cairnlea, including the decision to give Planning Minister Richard Wynne authority over the project. Development Victoria has lodged a planning scheme amendment for the 41-hectare site at 147a Cairnlea Drive and 26s Glenbrook Avenue, Cairnlea. It is proposing to to transform the site into a residential, retail, commercial and community precinct, comprising 840 dwellings, of which
25 per cent will be affordable housing. Mr Wynne has been granted planning power over the site at the request of Development Victoria, removing council as the responsible authority. In a submission on the proposed amendment, council urged Mr Wynne to allow it to retain its planning powers over the project amid concerns that a range of issues that may burden council and the community in the future may not be appropriately addressed if Mr Wynne remains the responsible authority for the amendment. It also raised concerns about the density of the proposed development, a lack of trees
at the site, insufficient public transport, the ongoing management of contamination of the site, that a number of community facilities proposed for the site are not fully-funded and that infrastructure such as open spaces and roads were not proposed to be built to council standards. A number of residents have also raised concerns about the development relating to the size of the blocks, a lack of trees and the amount of social housing proposed for the site. They also have concerns about contamination of the land. Cr Victoria Borg said while the development had “great potential”, the current proposal was
“a recipe for disaster”. Cr Virginia Tachos said the Cairnlea community deserved better. “Let’s be honest, this is an overdevelopment,” she said. “ … It is nothing more than a land grab to build high density housing with debatable social services and infrastructure to support it afterwards. It puts tremendous pressure on a community that deserves better.” Mr Wynne has asked the Government Land Standing Advisory Committee to provide independent advice on the suitability of the proposed amendment. The committee will hold a public hearing the week beginning May 23, during which it will hear from council.

Breakthrough musical A group of young African-Australians will take to the stage at St Albans’ Bowery Theatre later this week for an Australian-first performance of the musical of ‘Once on This Island’. The performances, from Thursday, April 28 until Sunday, May 1, will be the first live stage production of the musical by an all African-Australian youth cast, the Nguvu Moja Group. Based upon the novel ‘My Love, My Love’ by Rosa Guy, the musical uses multi-faceted narration to explore the life of a peasant girl on a tropical Afro-Caribbean Island who uses the power of love to bring people of different social classes together. “Being the first of its kind, we believe this is a monumental moment for young people and the state of Victoria. Critical backing from Victorian state government grants and African-Australian leaders and organisations
have provided real opportunities for young Victorians who have not had the opportunity to perform or have ever seen people that look like them on stage,” a group spokesperson said. Performer Jesse Dutlow said joining the ‘Once on this Island’ cast had been an “eye-opening and affirming experience”. “I’ve been a performer for most of my life and often when I have had an opportunity to create, whether in an academic or professional context, I’ve been the only Black person in the room. I’ve been expected to provide “the Black perspective”, shoehorned into certain roles or styles of performance and many times been overlooked because I don’t fit certain stereotypes,” Jesse said. “Because our Blackness has been a unifying factor, we are free to be ourselves as individuals in ways that we previously couldn’t.”

A government-funded course is helping Brimbank residents to brush up on their computer skills. The Be Connected – Introduction to Computers program will run at the Westvale Community Centre from Wednesday, May 4 to Wednesday, June 22. Delivered by Jesuit Community College, the program will familiarise participants with the internet, email and the basics of Microsoft Word. The course is one of many offered by Brimbank council in partnership with Neighbourhood Houses, libraries, St Albans Community Arts Centre, and more recently, Bimbank Learning Futures. Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said council has been facilitating digital literacy programs for nearly two decades. “Council is delighted to offer the community a variety of programs and activities at our Neighbourhood Houses and in other learning settings across Brimbank, including the new Be
Connected – Intro to Computers course,“ she said. “More than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic it highlighted the need for greater digital communications for social connection, employment and an increased sense of belonging. “We all had to adjust very quickly and move to remote learning, online shopping and communication for social and personal reasons, and it identified a need for greater computer competency. “Council believes that offering opportunities for learning throughout life is integral to building a prosperous community. Amazon creates jobs in the west By Olivia Condous Star Weekly took part in an exclusive tour of the new Amazon Australia fulfillment centre in Melton this week. The facility officially opened in August 2021, but was not able to permit visitors until recently due to COVID-19 restrictions. The centre is 37 thousand square metres, equivalent to double the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and employs between 250 to 300 people. The warehouse has the capacity to store about two million items and processes six million items over one year, with high-tech machinery making the fastest delivery times just three hours. The new Melton centre is one of two in Melbourne, open seven days a week and is adorned with a huge ‘#WEST IS BEST’ sign in the entrance area. Amazon Ravenhall fulfilment centre site lead Anna Reid is a resident of the western suburbs and said she was excited to be able to work close to home in a role that would help create more jobs in the area. The centre offers training programs for employees in externally recognised courses to help them build on their skills. “A big part of what we’re focussed on is bringing people in from the local community if they haven’t had warehouse experience,” Ms Reid said. While advanced technology is integral to Amazon operations, Ms Reid said the employees were still vital. “The technology makes it fast but the people make sure it’s done right and check the quality,” she said. In addition to providing more jobs for local residents, the centre also has a focus on using their resources for community outreach.

One of the community programs is Camp Amazon, which provides 100 students from New South Wales and Victoria the opportunity to participate in a two year program to develop their science, technology, engineering and math skills through after school or school holiday workshops. The Melton centre also recently sent 3000 toiletry packs to flood affected communities to help with disaster relief.
Amazon Australia workplace communications manager Jessica Makin said the company always tried hard to be a part of the communities in any place that they operate. “It’s also the community in which our employees live and work and we want to make sure that they feel supported in that way,” she said. Amazon Ravenhall employee Danielle Winterburne said the job provided stability,
after she lost her previous work during the pandemic, and had since moved to the western suburbs to be closer to the site. “It’s been fantastic, what I love about this job is that you’re not a number, you’re a human being,” Ms Winterburne said. “It’s just exceeded all the expectations that I have, I love it.” Take a look at the picture gallery above to get an inside look of the Amazon Ravenhall fulfilment centre.

Living with Parkinson’s disease By Molly Magennis and Tima Halloum The number of Victorians living with Parkinson’s disease, estimated to currently be 57,000, is rapidly increasing and neurological disorders are now the leading cause of disabilities worldwide. April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month and many organisations and health centres across the nation launched campaigns to increase the public’s understanding of symptoms and treatments available. ParKanDo is a support group in Melbourne’s west run solely by volunteers with a personal understanding of living with Parkinson’s. Their mission is to increase the number and diversity of support options for people living with the disease, connect members with people who understand the impacts of parkinsons and whilst allowing them to form valuable connections with each other. Pam West, ParKanDo co-leader and co-secretary, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2009. She officially launched ParKanDo just before COVID alongside current members Peter Wall and his wife Carmel. With a background in project management and community development, Pam knew she wanted to do something that would help others going through the same thing she was. While her journey with Parkinson’s has certainly been tough, she said the gratification she gets from helping others is invaluable. “It’s given me a reason to get out and do something and the best high for me has been helping people, it’s a big part of my life,” she said. “Selfishly, as much as you give, you get back more and I’ve loved it. “I’ve gone through the lows … I was mourning what I thought my life would be at this age and I really struggled with that, and

then through the help of a great psychologist and friends, particularly my kids have been amazing, I realised yes life was over as i knew it but there was nothing to stop me building a new life.” Mimi Morgan is also the current co-secretary of ParKanDo. She was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s in 2020, the same year her brother passed away from the same disease. Mimi joined ParKanDo not long after her diagnosis, and said she would recommend support groups like ParKanDo to anyone suffering from a chronic disease.

She does acknowledge however that it can be a bit confronting seeing others with the same condition who are further along in their journey. “It’s great but it’s a bit confronting because you see people, when you’re in early stages, and you see people in later stages and you wonder if that’s gonna happen to you,” she said. “So I try not to think about that. I try to just concentrate on every day I get up [and] do what I can to fight Parkinson’s basically.” For Parkinson’s awareness month, Mimi said that she wants people to know that
Parkinson’s is not just a movement disorder, and just because someone looks fine on the outside doesn’t mean they’re not struggling. “I think there should be more awareness that it’s quite a debilitating disease, but also I want people to have hope you know, like they’ll find a cure or find some better medication that lasts longer.” ParKanDo welcomes all new members, and the organisation constantly holds events and activities for those with Parkinson’s, chronic diseases and seniors. Back to school Twins Colby and Sebastian, and Rania and Dania, were among the excited pupils starting school at Furlong Park School for Deaf Children last week. The school reopened for 2021 on Thursday and there was plenty of fun for the two sets of twins and their school friends. Colby and Sebastian, 8, and Rania and Dania, 6, are two of three sets of twins at the school this year. The school has about 65 students. A third set of twins will start on February 11 and will be part of the school’s early years program. Principal Lee Bullock said it was possibly the first time the school had welcomed three sets of twins.

There have been at least eight factory, waste management or tip fires across the west and Hume since October, while the Kealba landfill has had underground fires burning continuously for more than a year. Former LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley and former state MLC member Colleen Hartland say enough is enough. “It’s a long-running issue,” Mr Rowley said. “It doesn’t matter which party has been in power at the time, they haven’t done enough clean-up of the west.

“The urgency to clean it [industry] up has never been greater.” Mr Rowley said during his time with LeadWest, from 2010-18, one of the biggest concerns raised by local councils was the need for a cleaner, greener and more liveable western metropolitan area. “We were constantly talking about it with the other tiers of government, about the investment needed in the west to make it cleaner and greener. “It just seems that it is taking a long time to get there.” Mr Rowley said an Environment Protection Act, which changes how the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regulates pollution, waste and contamination in Victoria, had been
delayed for 12 months. “We’ve been waiting for so long to have confidence to be able to breath fresh air. Confidence that our creeks aren’t going to be polluted.” He suggests forming a steering committee which would include the EPA, WorkSafe, MFB and council representatives to have a co-ordinated approach to industry clean-up. “I don’t think questions are being asked on Spring Street as often as they should.” He also proposed government funding to help bring old industrial estates up to the 21st century and the introduction of better air quality monitoring systems. Ms Hartland is a member of the Facebook group Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance, which was
set up after the West Footscray warehouse fire which spewed toxic fumes across the western suburbs for days in August 2018. She said the group, a non-political alliance of community groups, organisations and individuals, wants action. “There’s been a spate of these fires,” she said. “There’s been three in the last 10 days. “The EPA and the state government don’t seem to be taking it seriously.” Ms Hartland said the group wanted more regulation on industrial sites, clear information about when the EPA is called in and when and for how long air quality equipment is set up. She has also called for the act to be introduced. ■ Fire

The Labor Party has committed, if elected, to invest $10 million in a business case to explore the road needs along the stretch of Western Highway from Melton through to Caroline Springs. The Western Highway is a critical arterial road link that functions as an important economic driver at a metropolitan, state and national level. A business case would provide a clear direction on how to upgrade and future-proof this highway in one of Australia’s fastest growing areas. The Western Highway is an aged, rural standard road that desperately needs more interchanges, overpasses and lanes. Now is the time to invest in the Western Highway and we hope that other major parties will also make strong commitments towards this key road. Piggy bank in the middle With the cost of living increasing, now is a better time than ever to teach children about the importance of saving money effectively. With that in mind, financial experts from money.co.uk have compiled a list of their top 10 tips for teaching your children about money.

The likes of Kelsie Mitchell and Linnae Harper.” Cooper was drafted into the WNBA after college by Connecticut. She would also play with the Chicago Sky. She said she would bring what she learned in the WNBA and in countries like France, Italy and Spain to Keilor. “I think my professionalism will be something that I bring” she said. “Being able to help our team and with our team being young, being able to help those girls take the next step in their game. “It was great to play with some of the greatest players playing against the other greatest players. “There’s nothing more you can ask them for.” Cooper is hoping that her stint at Keilor might lead to a change to play in the WNBL later on. While Bandilovski is already happy with what he has seen from Cooper before she had even hit the court, the 26-year-old has set high expectations for herself. “I want to be on 100 per cent all the time,” she said. “I’m like Lebron James on the court. Watch out Keilor.”

New Keilor Thunder import Shayla Cooper is hoping to make a big impact on the National Basketball League 1 South competition. Cooper, who arrived in the country a couple of weeks out from the season, was set to debut for the Thunder during their first match on the weekend, after deadline. Speaking in the lead up to the game, Cooper said the decision to come out and play in Australia was an easy one. “I had heard really great things about Australia,” she said. “A lot of friends have played out here. “They say it’s a really good league and I wanted to come down and get familiar with it. “I have a friend who is playing in Cyprus and she kind of put me onto it [Keilor] and I said I would check it out. “She played here two years ago, so with all of that it was a yes.” Cooper said discussions between her and the club before signing the deal, made her feel like they were both heading in the same direction. She said chatting to coach Tom Bandilovski had also had the decision an easy one. Australia is the latest destination for Cooper in her basketball career, which has seen her play with some of the best players in the world. “I have played in a lot of different countries professionally,” she said. “In high school I won three state championships and played with some of the
