Fighting on for Boet By Alesha Capone When baby Boet was born 13 weeks premature, he weighed just 689 grams and was barely the size of his favourite soft toy, a platypus. However, his parents Marijn Mees and Joris Steeman, said their “tiny baby had a very big personality from the get-go” after he came into the world on December 21, 2018. Boet’s sisters, Caat and Eef, who are now aged eight and six respectively, were delighted to welcome their little brother into the family. Joris and Marijn had experienced several miscarriages before Boet was born, so his arrival was an extra-special event for the Point Cook family. Unfortunately, Boet was born
growth-restricted with the umbilical cord wrapped three times around his neck. After five weeks on a ventilator, it became clear how underdeveloped Boet’s lungs were, and he was transferred to the Royal Children’s Hospital. He was connected to a high-frequency jet ventilator, which was gentler on his lungs, and after 12 days Boet improved. He began feeding well and grew much bigger. “Boet loved baths and he loved riding around on his pram in the ward,” Marijn said. In May, the family were planning to take Boet home when he came down with what appeared to be a cold. He spent another eight weeks on the jet ventilator, with tests revealing he likely had a
rare fungal infection in his lungs. The family were told Boet was unlikely to survive, so Joris and Marijn took plaster handprints of their son’s hands and often bathed Boet with Eef and Caat’s help to create memories together, while relatives and medical staff formed a ‘Team Boet’ group to lend support. “We’d always say: ‘As long as he fights, we will fight with him’,” Joris said. Although Boet rallied and started showing improved health, sadly he developed sepsis and died on September 1, 2019, after 255 days in hospital. He was eight and a half months old. After Boet died, Caat and Eef wanted to bake cookies and sell them to help raise
funds for babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). The family also held a park run and raised $6000. Following this, they started a not-for-profit organisation named ByBoet that raises funds to support research and contribute to medical equipment and other items for NICUs. At the moment, ByBoet is raising funds for research which Dr David Tingay – one of Boet’s main doctors – is conducting through the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute to better understand lung function after birth. Caat and Eef have started a Superhero Day, encouraging their schools and other organisations to dress up and raise funds for ByBoet annually on November 19. Details: https://www.byboet.org/

Tarneit in the lead for new pool By Alesha Capone Wyndham council appears keen to build the municipality’s third indoor leisure and aquatic facility in Tarneit, despite a long campaign by Point Cook residents for their suburb to get such a facility. Wyndham’s Long Term Capital Works Program plan for 2021-22 to 2030-31, seen by Star Weekly, includes proposed projects the council will consider to help with levels of debt across the next decade. A “third indoor leisure and aquatic facility 1160 Riverdale” is included on the list, a reference to land on Sayers Road, Tarneit. The Long Term Capital Works Program –
which is subject to review every year and can be changed – also states the future indoor leisure and aquatic facility will cost about $100 million. According to the document, the council will spend about $53.2 million on the project – about $50 million less than originally planned. The council will instead seek funding from other levels of government to meet the entire cost of the facility. Wyndham ouncillor Josh Gilligan said that he opposed the decision to cut $50 million of projected funding to build the Riverdale Leisure and Aquatic Centre in Tarneit. “Families in Tarneit made it very clear to
me at the last election that a major leisure and aquatic hub was desperately needed and I’ll keep fighting on their behalf to make that a reality,” he said. “Despite the shortfall, council has a clear position that Tarneit is next in line for this vital community facility”. However, Point Cook Action Group (PCAG) secretary Christine Macpherson said that the booming population of Point Cook, in Wyndham’s south, deserved an aquatic centre just as much as Tarneit – which is in the north – does. “Why they are getting it up in the north before it was built down south?” she said. “I don’t understand, with the municipality
being this big, the thinking behind saying three aquatic centres is the limit – why not build four?” Wyndham city life director Allison Kenwood said the council has begun early planning for a third aquatic facility, monitoring the level of post-COVID re-engagement at Aquapulse and residential growth. “These factors as well as a number of other considerations will help determine where a future site may be located and will assist us in developing a future business case and concept plan,” she said. “Wyndham city will engage with the community and conduct community consultation on any future draft concept plans.”

Arisha is hair to help sick children Eleven-year-old Point Cook resident Arisha has cut off her long locks to help children with cancer. Arisha, who is a grade 5 pupil at Alamanda College, last had short hair when she was just one year old. However, Arisha said she decided to donate her hair to a good cause after coming out the state’s COVID-19 lockdown. After getting a haircut, she sent her hair to Ella Wigmakers in New South Wales, who will use it to make a wigs for kids with cancer on behalf of Wigs 4 Kids. “After lockdown my hair had grown quite
long, I thought I could donate it to help other children,” Arisha said. “Wigs 4 Kids uses donated hair to make wigs for children with illnesses like cancer. “I thought it was a great idea.” Arisha said she was a fan of her new, shorter hairdo. “It’s easier to manage, I can comb it more easily and there is not as many tangles,” she said. Arisha is also on a mission to raise $2000 for the Kids with Cancer Foundation (KWCF), which provides financial support for families that have a child suffering cancer.
The foundation also funds research into better ways to treat cancer. Wyndham council is proposing to reduce the speed limit in the Wattle Avenue precinct of Werribee to 40 km/h as part of measures to reduce traffic in the area. If adopted, the speed limit would permanently be reduced in the Wattle Avenue neighbourhood bounded by the Princes Highway, Duncans Road and the Princes Freeway. The speed limit would apply to the residential parts of the Wattle Avenue area, not the surrounding main roads. The speed limit drop is among the suggestions the council is seeking community feedback on, regarding proposed measures to reduce traffic and speeding – plus boost road safety – in the Wattle Avenue area. A number of residents have recently contacted the council about increased traffic in the Wattle Avenue region, following the extension of Tarneit Road. If the community supports reducing the speed limit, council officers will formally ask the Department of Transport to introduce the change. The council’s draft local area traffic management plan for Wattle Avenue is also proposing to install new traffic calming treatments to reinforce the lower speed limit, and in turn discourage through traffic and drivers using Wattle Avenue as a shortcut. Werribee green data centre an Australian first A $3 million proposal to build the first bio-energy-powered data centre in Australia at the Werribee tip has been approved by Wyndham council. A council planning committee meeting, held last week, approved a planning permit application to construct the modularised data centre at Wyndham’s refuse disposal facility on Wests Road. Councillor Peter Maynard said it was “amazing” that the nation’s first bio-energy powered data centre would be constructed in the municipality.
The data centre will be built by from LMS Energy Pty Ltd, which already owns and operates the Wyndham Renewable Energy Facility at the tip site. LMS Energy has operated the facility, which has five generator modules powered with biogas generated by the nearby landfill, since 2011. Electrical output from the facility is more than 43,000 megawatt hour (Mwh) per year of baseload renewable power, which is delivered into the local Powercor distribution network. Under the new planning permit application, LMS Energy will install and operate six
data centre modules to be powered by the renewable electricity generated on-site. Each module will measure around 12 metres long, 3.4 metres wide and 2.4 metres high. The facility will operate automatically without any onsite staff, apart from periodic checks from visiting maintenance technicians. The council’s city design and liveability director, Ludo Campbell-Reid, said the data centre would not cause any visual amenity impacts. However, Mr Campbell-Reid said that after being alerted of the proposal, the state
Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended potential landfill gas risks be considered as part of the plan. The council will require LMS Energy to undertake a landfill gas risk assessment before proceeding with the data centre’s construction, including the provision of an expert consultant’s report “as to any potential hazard associated with methane beneath the land and any recommendations for the management or monitoring of methane gas”. Wave of buyer interest By Alesha Capone A Werribee South boat shed, which is up for sale, has attracted inquiries from potential buyers both locally and across Melbourne. The boat shed at 154 Campbells Cove, which was completely rebuilt about six years ago, has a price tag of $150,000. Paul Nuske from Triwest Real Estaten Werribee said the boat shed was “in excellent condition” with large double doors that open up to face Port Phillip Bay. Mr Nuske said that inquiries about the boat shed to date “have been a mix of local and out of town”. “We have received local inquiries from residents of Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee, some that surprisingly did not know that the Campbells Cove boat shed
precinct existed,” he said. “As well we have received inquiries from Brunswick, Caulfield, Greensborough and Taylors Lakes.” Mr Nuske said there has been a “definite increase in demand for families seeking outdoor recreational activities coming out of lockdowns”. “Boat sheds provide opportunities for families to have their own little piece of beach away from the crowds to unwind, have a barbecue and get the paddle boards and canoes out,” he said. “For locals it is also convenient to head down there during the week after work on warm evenings away from the crowds of the public beaches.” Mr Nuske said Campbells Cove was an isolated part of Port Phillip Bay, which was
part of its appeal for the boat shed owners. “It’s tucked away adjoining the RAAF base and market gardens,” he said. “You wouldn’t drive down the road to Campbells Cove unless you knew it was there.” Boat shed owners are also allowed to add solar power and rainwater tanks to their properties, providing they abide by Wyndham council’s boat shed management policy. However, staying overnight in the boat sheds is not permitted. According to the Wyndham Boatshed Association, the first Werribee South boat sheds were built in the early 1920s at Bailey’s Beach (formerly known as Elliot’s Beach). After World War II, construction of the boat sheds increased, and was moved east from Bailey’s Beach to Campbells Cove.
Community members are being invited to have a say on the future construction of the Ison Road rail overpass in Werribee. Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) is completing planning and development work for the new road overpass bridge over the Melbourne-Geelong railway line, which will provide a link between the Princes Freeway and Wyndham’s west. The 2020-21 state budget included $10.28 million for early works on the overpass, which will extend south towards Browns Road and connect with a section of Ison Road, to be constructed by Wyndham council. The latest stage of planning will explore opportunities for active transport, including a shared use path and dedicated bike lanes on both carriageways. Locals are encouraged to have their say and share their insights on the upcoming project by completing an online survey by December 1. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said: “We’ve already delivered the $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade and are now looking to the future of Melbourne’s west with planning under way for the Ison Road Rail Overpass in Werribee”. MRPV is also in the early stages of planning potential improvements to the Werribee Main Road and Princes Freeway Interchange, including traffic modelling, planning studies and environmental and historic heritage investigations. This planning work will consider upgrades to the interchange, including on and off ramps to the Princes Freeway, as well as the provision for active transport and cycling options. Youth justice centre is on track By Alesha Capone Construction of the future Cherry Creek youth justice facility has reached a major milestone, with more than one million labour hours completed on the project. The $419 million youth justice centre, located about 11 kilometres from the Werribee train station and 1.5 kilometres north-east of where Little River Road joins the Princes Freeway, is expected to open in 2022. The 140-bed youth facility will include a mental health unit, an intensive intervention unit, a specialised health care unit and an intensive alcohol and drug treatment
program. The complex will house teenagers and young adults, including males aged 15-18 years. According to the state government’s Youth Justice Strategic Plan 2020–2030, this will include young people who are on remand and who have been sentenced. In August, workers completed a total of 100,000 labour hours at the youth justice facility prior to the COVID-19 construction shutdown. However, more than 500 workers are now back on site with extensive COVID-Safe measures in place, including physical distancing, personal protective equipment for
all workers and temperature sensors at entry gates. Work under way includes the fit-out of the centre’s 35 buildings and facade, and roofing works across its kitchen, spiritual and visitor areas. Corrections Minister Natalie Hutchins said “solid progress” was being made towards completing the youth justice facility. “This facility is a key part of upgrading our youth justice system to boost staff safety and break cycles of offending,” Ms Hutchins said. “The new facility has dedicated drug and alcohol treatment facilities and on-site classrooms to help young people address their behaviour and learn new skills to successfully
transition back into the community.” About 250 jobs will be created at the Cherry Creek facility, including youth justice custodial officers, psychologists, teachers, health workers and administrative and maintenance staff. The facility will also have dedicated education and vocational training campus on site. The primary security barrier for the complex will be a wall, designed to provide both a physical and visual screen between the youth justice centre and the surrounding public area. Costumes take a title role in celebrations Syreya, Sebastian, Matilda and Ryan were among the pupils at Heathdale Christian College in Werribee who celebrated Book Week by dressing up as their favourite literary characters on Friday. During Book Week, which the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s started in the 1940s, schools and libraries pay tribute to books and Australian authors and illustrators. This year’s Book Week was scheduled for August 20 to 26, when many children across Victoria were learning from home due to the state government’s COVID-19 lockdown, which meant traditional school activities such as costume parades had to postponed or cancelled.

Esports arena is a first In an Australian first, Wyndham Tech School (WTS) is establishing a professional esports arena to help students learn about game development, cybersecurity, content creation and other IT subjects. Thirty-four government and non-government schools across Wyndham and Hobsons Bay will have access to the facility, to give students the practical experience they need to pursue a career in the billion-dollar international industry of esports – AKA electronic sports – and gaming. An esports arena is a chain of indoor arenas and event centres dedicated to electronic sports and gaming. The WTS facility will also teach students about esports entrepreneurship and allow them to participate in interschool esports competitions and events. Industry partner BIG Esports has created a 10-week program to be delivered for students. BIG Esports founder and chief executive Chris Smith said that as an employer in the field, gone are the days of seeking employees who have “regular” qualifications in marketing. “Graduates need to have hands-on industry experience to stand out from the rest and thrive in positions,” he said. “We’re here to make that happen and are proud to have partnered with Wyndham Tech School to make it a reality.” Thomas Carr College has partnered with WTS as part of the esports pilot program. Principal Craig Holmes said the college’s vision was to encourage studenys to become “global citizens”. “New and emerging technologies provide an opportunity to connect, up-skill and broaden the frontiers for our students in partnership with WTS and their industry connectivity,” he said.

WTS director Gail Bray said the tech school was excited to partner with Big Esports and Thomas Carr College to provide something unique in Wyndham. “The exposure to skills and technology that will ignite creativity in students inspires them to think about careers they may have never heard of or thought possible to obtain, both nationally and globally,” she said. The state government last week announced
$534,015 in funding for the WTS esports facility. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said the funding would help equip a production studio with video cameras, green screen, lighting, laser 3D scanning, motion tracking equipment and microphones, for students to create digital content and assets. Bin changes Wyndham council is moving 2900 kerbside bin collections in Werribee to a different day of the week. Households in the Harpley estate now need to put their bins out for a Thursday morning collection, rather than a Friday collection. Residents living in the area bounded by the Princes Freeway, Werribee River, Synnot Street and College Road will also have their bin collection day moved to Thursdays. The council has advised residents of these areas to put their bins out on Wednesday nights, ahead of rubbish trucks coming to empty them the following morning. The change will affect all three of Wyndham’s bin collections – garbage, recycling and green bins – as well as hard waste collections. The council has issued a notice which states that Friday is the busiest day for bin and hard waste collections. “By moving some households collections to Thursday, will mean a more balanced schedule and improved service to residents,” the notice read. Every household affected by the changes has been notified with a flyer from the council and an updated waste calendar. The last Friday bin collection for these households took place on Friday, November 5. However, the council’s rubbish contractor will keep collecting bins on Saturdays in the affected areas for a couple of weeks, while people get used to the changed schedule. Grant to help kickstart safety Wyndham council has welcomed a $700,000 state government grant to help address the causes of crime and improve community safety. Crime Prevention Minister Natalie Hutchins was joined by Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly when she announced the grant last week. Ms Hutchins said that Wyndham was one of six Victorian councils to receive a grant from the state government’s Empowering Communities initiative, along with Ballarat, Casey, Dandenong, Knox and Shepparton councils.
The Empowering Communities grants are part of the state government’s Building Safer Communities Program and will support communities to kickstart projects to improve safety and address crime in their area. “This funding will give the city of Wyndham the resources and support to develop local crime prevention initiatives to tackle important safety issues identified by the community,” Ms Hutchins said. “I look forward to seeing the crime prevention projects brought to life in the Wyndham community to improve safety for all.”
Ms Connolly said: “Local residents and councils understand their community better than anyone, so we’re investing in their expertise and knowledge to address the root causes of crime”. Wyndham’s community safety portfolio holder, Cr Susan McIntyre, said the council would establish an action group to make decisions about community safety priorities and how grant’s funds would be allocated in the municipality. The action group will also lead a Building Safer Communities forum in Wyndham and decide on common goals and objectives
to assist the council in identifying local organisations to deliver community safety activities. “The action group will bring a range of stakeholders together to consider important issues that impact on crime and perceptions of safety in the community, identify priority areas for action and identify strengths Wyndham can build on, including programs that are already underway or planned,” Cr McIntyre said. Uniting for festive cheer The Uniting Wyndham Gifts For Families appeal is seeking donations of toys and gifts from the community. Each year, the Werribee office of Uniting Vic.Tas supports disadvantaged families in Wyndham by providing Christmas presents for children and teenagers. Wyndham appeal co-ordinator Kate Nielsen said that due to the impact of COVID-19, more families than ever before were expected to seek emergency assistance this festive season. “The impact of job losses and the extended lockdown has stretched many family budgets to breaking point,” Ms Nielsen said. “Gifts For Families is one of the highlights of every year for us – and we’re determined that nobody will go without a gift this Christmas.” Ms Nielsen said that last year, Uniting was able to provide 1000 Wyndham children with gifts.
“This year we’re hoping to help even more,” she said. “For our volunteers, putting smiles on the faces of families and providing gifts to deserving children and young people is so rewarding.” Ms Nielsen said individuals, groups, schools, families and workplaces were all invited to donate gifts to the appeal. Donations of new and unwrapped gifts or gift cards for children aged up to 17 years old can be made at Uniting Wyndham, 19 Duncans Road, Werribee. Illness is a spur for creativity By Alesha Capone Werribee musician and filmmaker Tim Shaw has used a frightening and intense medical experience as the catalyst for a series of creative projects. Shaw, who said his childhood hobbies were making movies and music, is recognisable as a member of the punk rock band Our Best Laid Plans. Earlier this year, Shaw – who is also a singer, actor, director, producer and writer – said that he experienced a two-week long headache. After seeing several doctors, he ended up in hospital. “I ended up having a lumbar puncture because I had fluid on the brain and hypertension,” Shaw said. “I went blind for maybe five to six days while I was in hospital.” Doctors put him on a course of steroids to help regain his sight, which caused Shaw to “hallucinate big time in the process, it was almost as if I was on a spirit quest to find my body, that is the best way I can describe it.” He said the experience was also “very scary” as he did not know what was
happening to him. While he could not see, Shaw also listened a variety of music – from Meditation Music to Coldplay – which inspired the sound of Spectres & Machines. Shaw said he chose this name for his music project, as it sums up the types of images he saw while hallucinating. He launched a single, titled Love Like A Supernova, as Spectres & Machines, last month. Spectres & Machines has also evolved into a series of digital comics, three 10-minute short films and plans for a feature film. Shaw said his sister, illustrator Rhiannon Mowat, assisted him during the process of storyboarding the comics. “The feature film is in the pre-production stages,” he said. “Correspondence has already begun and in early days at the moment with Screen Australia regarding eligibility for funding so there’s a lot of things in motion all happening at once.” Anyone interested in joining the cast or crew can submit a CV, headshot and showreels to: www.facebook.com/spectresandmachines
Art lead announced Wyndham council has annouced Gunditjmara artist Dr Vicki Couzens will serve as lead artist on a public art project to be installed at Tarneit Community Learning Centre. A program titled Voice of the Land, Voice of the People, Voice of our Heart – Mother Tongue artwork will inform the creative design and development of the new sculptural work. More than 200 Wyndham community members have been so far part of the consultation process and have provided feedback to inform and develop the artistic brief for the sculpture. The Tarneit artwork will be part of the Mother Language Public Art Project, which has other sculptures and artworks located throughout the world including in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tbilisi, Georgia and at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Ms Couzens is a Gunditjmara woman, Yoolongteeyt (cultural title) from the western districts of Victoria.
She has worked in Aboriginal community affairs for more than 40 years in the areas of language revitalisation, ceremony, community arts, public art, visual and performing arts and writing. Six-storey hotel set to be built in Truganina A 75-room hotel will be built in Truganina by Quest Apartment Hotels. The nation’s largest serviced apartment operator last week announced plans for the hotel, which will be constructed at the corner of Leakes Road and Palmers Road. Quest Truganina will become the first hotel in the suburb. Part of a mixed-use development by Abraham Cohen, Quest Truganina will provide a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, occupying four of the building’s six levels. The hotel will also feature ground-floor reception, a conference facility, a business lounge and gymnasium. Construction is set to commence in the second quarter of 2022 and is slated for completion in mid-2023. Quest’s growth and capital strategy general manager, James Shields, said that Wyndham was one of the largest and fastest growing municipalities in Australia, with a population of over 280,000 that is tipped to exceed half a million by 2041. “There’s a clear opportunity to capitalise on demand and provide quality accommodation the growing business segment travelling to the area,” he said. While Quest has several established apartment hotels in Melbourne’s outer west, Mr Shields said more were needed to boost economic growth and investment. “In late 2018, retailer Target moved its headquarters to the Williams Landing town centre, where an additional hundred businesses and the state government of

Innovation fund open Applications for the Wyndham council 2022 Small Business Entrepreneurship and Innovation Fund are now open. The fund aims to support local businesses develop innovative strategies, encourage business collaboration and build capacity for entrepreneurship. Wyndham’s future focused economy portfolio holder, Cr Mia Shaw, said: “As businesses bounce back from the pandemic, this fund will allow local businesses to form a strategy that will support growth and sustainability”. The fund has two streams to support businesses in all phases. Stream one is open for businesses that have been trading for less than 24 months and stream two is open for businesses who have been open for more than 24 months. “The broad funding streams will capture businesses of all kinds in Wyndham, whether it be those in the start-up phase or those in a mature, growth phase,” Cr Shaw said. “The majority of Wyndham’s local businesses employ less than five people, meaning small business in Wyndham really is big business. This fund will support the local industry journey out of one of the toughest periods businesses have ever – and hopefully will ever face.” Successful recipients will be non-employing businesses such as sole proprietors and partnerships without employees or micro businesses that employ less than five people. Former minister Wade Noonan joins Victoria University Former Williamstown MP and state government minister Wade Noonan has been appointed to a key strategic role at Victoria University. Last Wednesday, Mr Noonan was announced as VU’s new deputy vice-chancellor external relations and partnerships, a role he said will combine his advocacy for the western suburbs with the chance to directly contribute to VU’s vision and future. “I’m passionate about the west and ambitious about how VU can help shape its future,” he said. “To be joining VU at a critical time of its growth and transformation is hugely exciting.”
Mr Noonan said the university sits well poised to deliver “campuses of the future” built on ethical values and conscious partnering. “To do this well will require deeper alliances with like-minded industry partners and the delivery of the ‘flipped campus’ model brings smart and creative minds together,” he said. Mr Noonan served as the member for the state seat of Williamstown from 2007 to 2018 and became a minister in the first term of the Andrews government in 2014. He has recently served as executive director of the West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA), playing a role in developing a 20-year blueprint for
Melbourne’s North and West City Deal. A-maze-ing attraction Four boa constrictors at Werribee Open Range Zoo have a new, quirky way to keep fit – a custom-made snake maze Keepers at the zoo designed the maze for the Madagascan Dumeril’s boas. The maze has two entrance holes, nine chambers and plenty of dead ends to test the snakes’ problem-solving abilities. Zoo natives keeper Malinda Delahant said the snake maze promoted natural behaviours to help boost the snakes’ brain activity and physical health. “ “The maze was specially designed by keepers as a cognitive enrichment tool for our boas,”
Ms Delahant said. “But it is also a welfare tool, helping to maintain body condition by encouraging natural exploratory behaviours. “All four boas have responded well to the snake maze. “We’ve seen a lot of tongue flicking, which shows us that the snakes are super stimulated.” While the one-by-one metre maze was designed to be used by all resident boas, special considerations were needed to accommodate the complex needs of 21-year-old elderly female snake Madda. “Our geriatric boa, Madda, has a spinal
condition,” Ms Delahant said. “So, to ensure her ongoing quality of life, we had to consider how she would engage with the maze safely. “As our eldest and largest snake, we developed the tool to help maintain her muscle condition, which will enable her to better support her spine and prevent the condition from deteriorating.” Ms Delahant said visitors will have the opportunity to see the Dumeril’s boas exploring the snake maze at the zoo’s indoor play space, Ranger Kids. The state government has announced $38,080 in funding to help the Truganina CFA extend its storage facilities. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said CFA volunteers have also raised $19,040 for the extension. The total cost of the project is $57,120. The Truganina project has been allocated one of 303 grants from the $14.3 million 2020-21 Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP). Under the program, the state government matches every $1 paid by volunteer groups with a $2 co-contribution, up to $150,000 per project. The annual grants program gives volunteer emergency service groups the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $150,000 to purchase equipment including vehicles, trucks, tankers, watercraft and trailers, and for minor improvements including refurbishments and amenities, such as kitchens and change rooms. Other operational equipment that can be funded includes chainsaws, generators, quick fill pumps and inflatable rescue boats and engines. “The Truganina CFA crew are a hardworking and dedicated group of volunteers – always there and ready to put others first in a crisis,” Ms Connolly said, Emergency Services Minister Jaclyn Symes said: “These grants have been going strong since they were first set up twenty years ago – communities will continue to proudly contribute to local fundraising efforts, but we want to help reduce that task and demonstrate that we’ll always support our selfless volunteers”.
Push to encourage people to become active in Wyndham Wyndham resident Karthikeyan Viswanathan has launched an initiative to help residents get active. In 2019, Mr Viswanathan founded BibVault, an online platform for runners. Mr Viswanathan, who belongs to the Wyndham Vale Park Run group, he was wanted to encourage more people to become active - in a fun manner - as lockdown ended. This inspired him to start Go Around Wyndham, a virtual event in which participants can walk, run or cycle a maximum of 123 kilometres within two months. The Wyndham municipality’s boundary stretches 123 kilometres, although Go Around Wyndham participants can complete their
exercise anywhere, as an individual or in teams. Their activities will be tracked by BibVault either automatically through Strava integration or via manual upload. “I am looking forward to seeing more Wyndham residents from different walks of life to enjoy this fun-filled event and enhance their lifestyle and also know a bit more about Wyndham,” Mr Viswanathan said. “This is an opportunity to finish 2021 strongly and welcome 2022 positively.” Go Around Wyndham started last week and will run until January Go Around Wyndham started last week and will run until January 15, 2022 - registrations are open until January 7, 2022. Building some good in the world By Alesha Capone A company that builds and provides housing for people with a disability and women leaving family violence is planning to construct more homes in Wyndham. Ethical Property Investments (EPI) director Goro Gupta said he set up the business with an intention to do some good in the world. Mr Gupta is also co-director of Empowered Liveability, a disability housing provider under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). With EPI, he aims to build affordable and
quality accommodation for “often-forgotten Australians”, including people at risk of homelessness. EPI invites small-scale investors, who want to be involved in a project which benefits the community, to put their money into building a property. Mr Gupta said that once constructed, the residences were rented to community service providers and domestic violence service providers, which find tenants. The properties can also be modified to suit individual tenants. “In some cases, this might mean designing
a house with separate ensuite bathrooms for everyone as well as custom accessibility modifications for long term tenants as they age,” Mr Gupta said. “We consult very heavily with providers, we give them what they need to provide very a high-quality workspace and what tenants need as well.” Mr Gupta said EPI’s first property, a double-storey house with six bedrooms, has been built in Werribee. Its tenants include people with a mild intellectual disability. EPI’s second property is being built in
Doreen, which is located in the northern suburbs. Mr Gupta said EPI hoped to expand further across Melbourne in the future, including in Wyndham. “Our goal is to construct 30 houses within the next 12 months,” Mr Gupta said. “We have already got four earmarked for Werribee and Tarneit.” Details: www.ethicalpropertyinvestments. com.au

Spread the word about libraries Wyndham libraries have reopened following the pandemic lockdown. Staff across the Hoppers Crossing (Werribee Plaza) Library, Julia Gillard Library Tarneit, Manor Lakes Library, Point Cook Library and Werribee Library are all looking forward to welcoming members back. The five locations have reopened at slightly reduced hours across weekends and evenings. All of Wyndham’s libraries will be open at least one evening per week and one afternoon over the weekend. Some of the regular library programs, including Baby Time and Language Cafe, are running in-person for small groups, while other free events and programs will continue
online. All Wyndham libraries are operating under strict COVID-Safe protocols to ensure the safety of the community and staff. Library staff have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and anyone wishing to visit a library branch must be fully-vaccinated, unless they have a medical exemption. The popularity of Wyndham’s libraries did not dip during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Record numbers of people borrowed eBooks and eAudio books from Wyndham council’s libraries in the 2020-21 financial year. The libraries loaned 58,398 eBooks across the timeframe, an increase of 46 per cent on the previous financial year.
An additional 53,707 eAudio books were borrowed, 39 per cent higher than the previous 12 months. Wyndham’s learning city portfolio holder, Cr Jasmine Hill, said it was “fantastic” that residents have been making the most of the library resources. “Whether that be for pleasure or learning, it is wonderful that our libraries are a place where everyone can find something that interests them,” Cr Hill said. Westgrove Primary School, Tarneit Rise Primary School, Tarneit P-9 College and Point Cook P-9 College are among the 20 schools to receive the tests, before the program is rolled out across Victoria. At-home rapid antigen tests will be offered to unvaccinated pupils – primarily those aged under 12 – who are primary close contacts as a result of a positive case at school. The program will allow pupils to return to school after seven days of quarantine, rather than 14 days, provided they show a negative test on day six, and then complete negative rapid antigen tests at home each day and return a negative result before school on days eight to 14 of their quarantine period. The program will run alongside medical trials of rapid antigen testing in school communities, administered by nurses Education Minister James Merlino said this would make it easier for children who are currently isolating. “For kids and their families who are excited to get back to school, having to quarantine can be really frustrating – these rapid antigen tests will cut that time and get kids back in the classroom sooner.” “This is another way we’re making learning as COVIDSafe as possible while keeping schools open.” Tara Murray
Youths take to the stage to perform locally written play A group of young adults from a Wyndham drama group will stage a show penned by local playwright Alaine Beek later this month. Ms Beek, a Werribee resident who is also an actor, has won several awards for her scripts and performances. She is also known for running Essence Productions, which stages plays at Werribee Mansion telling the historical story of the Chirnside family. Earlier this year, Ms Beek started a 10-week dramatic arts youth initiative named Say it Out Loud (SIOL). Ms Beek said the Wyndham council pilot 12 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 17 November, 2021
program aimed to encourage courageous creative thinking through performing arts, among students aged 16 to 22 years old. Ms Beek said the SIOL participants were due to appear in a 45-minute play she wrote, titled Testing Nothing, at the Wyndham Cultural Centre during September. The show was cancelled due to lockdown but has been rescheduled for later this month. “We’re super excited about this play,” Ms Beek said. “It is set in an English exam and is basically saying the exam process brings out the best in very few of our students. “What is fantastic, is the stories are based
on real student experiences. “We started working on the play in 2019 with the Werribee Secondary drama group and then the SIOL group continued to develop it with me.” Testing Nothing will be performed in two shows at the Saltwater Community Centre’s outdoor amphitheatre in Point Cook on Saturday, November 27, at 2pm and 7pm. New MCH employees welcomed By Alesha Capone Doris has a passion for providing support and care to promote positive outcomes for families. Doris is one of four registered nurses and midwives who participated in additional study in the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) field, while completing a pilot program with Wyndham council. The council’s Employment Pathways program, in partnership with its MCH team, delivered the pilot program with funding provided by the Department of Health. The students, who took part in the pilot to extend their professional development, have all been offered a permanent position with the council’s MCH service. The program started last month and finished last week. The students all came from the hospital sector, where they worked in acute settings. Doris said she completed her general Nursing and midwifery studies in Nigeria and started working in a childbirth centre, at a Nigerian hospital, before arriving in Australia nearly 20 years ago. “I have worked in a variety of nursing areas before settling at Werribee Mercy Hospital working predominantly in midwifery for over 11 years,” she said. “I started my post-graduate diploma studies, part-time in child and family health nursing in 2020, and just graduated in September, 2021.” Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said that the positive feedback provided by Doris and the other MCH program participants “was more than we (the council) ever expected”. “It was a fantastic opportunity for them to get a feel and understanding of the different areas in council and the support that is available,” Cr Hegdich said. “This is so important as Maternal Child

Health Nurses need to refer parents and carers to a wide variety of support services.” Doris said she decided to go into the MCH field because she wanted to work with women for longer periods after they give birth, rather than the few days they spend in hospital. Doris, whose sister and niece are also MCH employees, said she was excited to begin her “new adventure” in her role at Wyndham city council (WCC). “I decided to join WCC MCH because of the amazing support that was provided by the
dedicated support team,” Doris said. “And to top it all, being paid to do the orientation was great incentive. “I think that I will enjoy my dream job and seeing the child growing and working with families, providing them parenting support and promoting their health and wellbeing.” Doris said the biggest challenge of working as an MCH staff member during the COVID-19 pandemic was the stress that parents are under.
“They may have lost income, or their family may not have been able to come and support them when they have their new baby,” she said. “Also, we have been supporting families who have COVID infection or are in isolation. “They may be frightened about what will happen to them and their family, or just feel really lonely. “Being flexible and listening to families’ concerns has been very important.” Another student who participated in the pilot program and is now employed by the council is Olivia, aged 27. Olivia said she originally studied a bachelor of nursing/bachelor of midwifery. “I then worked for a few years in a major tertiary hospital in Melbourne,” she said. “To become a Maternal and Child Health Nurse I recently studied and completed a graduate diploma in child and family health nursing.” Olivia said the part of midwifery that she enjoys the most is “educating and empowering parents on their journey of parenthood”. “I am a big believer in knowledge is power and the opportunity to work together with parents to provide this knowledge and help them build their confidence is what I love doing,” she said. “I am enjoying getting to know all the families. “Building that connection and discovering all the people that make up Wyndham – that human connection is one of the best parts of the job. “I am very grateful to Wyndham for providing the opportunity for the student pilot program.” Details: https://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ careers/employment-pathways

By Alesha Capone Demand for birthing suites at Werribee Mercy Hospital has reached capacity. The hospital welcomed 3833 babies in 2020, slightly lower than the 3888 babies delivered there in 2019. Health services chief executive Jason Payne said Werribee Mercy Hospital’s birthing numbers had remained steady over the past two years because the birthing suites were unable to accommodate any more expectant mums. He said some pregnant women within the Werribee Mercy Hospital catchment are
being forced to use services at public hospitals outside the area. “The demand exists for Werribee Mercy Hospital to deliver more babies locally but this cannot occur without expanded facilities,” Mr Payne said. “It would be preferable that local families had access to more of the best high quality and safe public birthing services at Werribee Mercy Hospital, so they don’t have to travel.” Mr Payne said planning was under way to boost the capacity of the birthing suites. “A third stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is currently in the final stages of planning, will involve the creation of more
birthing suites, additional post-natal beds, and other ante and post-natal facilities, accompanied by additional midwifery and nursing staff. “Based on demand for existing maternity services, it is projected that Werribee Mercy Hospital would be well placed to meet an anticipated increase in demand of up to 30 per cent more babies in the western metro area.” Mr Payne said Mercy Health has been working with the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and the Department of Health and Human Services since 2016 to prepare for the future needs of Werribee Mercy.
In November’s state budget, $4.8 million was allocated to finalise planning for the third stage of the hospital’s development. “We have acknowledged publicly the funding was a clear sign the voices of the people of the west of Melbourne are being heard and government is committed to meeting a major upgrade,” Mr Payne said. Mercy Health Group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s construction required $300 million in funding “to ensure the people of Wyndham receive the level and quality of health services they deserve and need”.

United’s ready and raring to go After the “longest pre-season in the world” Western United will take to the pitch at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium this Saturday to kick start the 2021-22 A-League season. Tara Murray spoke with new coach John Aloisi and player Connor Pain ahead of the big match against Melbourne Victory.

fter another off-season full of lockdowns and restrictions, Western United’s Connor Pain can’t wait to take to the field this weekend. Pain and his teammates will kick off their A-League season against Melbourne Victory. Pain admits that the off-season was just as much a mental battle as one of trying to stay in shape and ready for the season. “It’s probably been the longest pre-season in the world,” he said. “The season creeping up now it’s obviously exciting to get everything started. “Aside from friendlies and stuff, it would have been four to five months, it felt like a long time. “The training is great and all that, but we play for a reason and we can’t wait to get back into competitive games.” For Pain, who is one of the club’s original players, this pre-season has been slightly different. With a new coach in John Aloisi and a number of new players, there has been plenty of excitement on the track. It’s the first time Pain has worked with Aloisi. “It has been great, it has been obviously intense, good to have some new ideas around the place and some new faces, not just in the coaching department,” Pain said. “It has been an interesting change, but it has been good so far and we’re just looking to implement what we are working on. “It’s been really good and really positive. There are obviously really high standards in the camp and I can’t say a bad word about him so far.”

Pain said the group could see some of the magic that the new international players could produce. He said they had all integrated seamlessly. “It has been an odd one with COVID and getting all the foreigners here, [I] only really met a couple of them in the last week or two,” he said. “All of them in their own way have shown something. It’s a good mixture and range of positions and they’re only going to add to the good group of Aussies we have.” Pain isn’t the only one itching for the season to begin, with Aloisi keen to get his United
coaching career under way. The former Australian star said he didn’t realise how much he missed coaching until he hit the training track. “You realise how much you miss it when you get back in,” he said. “Finally back on the grass again, I have really enjoyed it. It gives you that energy again. “When you miss it, you reflect on things. The energy is there which is good from my part, excited to be back on the pitch.” Aloisi said he had been impressed by the whole playing group and how they had attacked the pre-season. It hadn’t been an easy one, with some players saying it was the hardest pre-season they had been through, he said. “The boys have really taken on board what we are trying to do as a team and club,” he said. “They’ve been working really hard, which is the most important thing. The buy-in of the players has been exceptional, as a coach it makes your job so much easier and it actually helps the younger players get back to the level. “Everyone in general has been working really well from the younger players to the older players. They’ve all worked really hard, and we’ve trained hard and for a lot of them it’s the hardest pre-season. “They’ve done the most important thing I look at, everyone has different talents, but in terms of work ethic you look for, all of the players have shown they are willing to work and work for each other, that helps the team bond as well.” While Aloisi had been impressed with the whole squad, he said players such as Dylan
Pierias and Lachlan Wales had really benefited from being in the Australian Olympic team Three other players have just returned from the Olyroos Asian Cup qualifiers. He said Josh Risdon would also be like a new recruit after an injury-riddled season last year. Aloisi said the club was still doing some last minute preparations as it looked to fire come the start of the season. He said the imports were starting to find their feet after hotel quarantine had an early impact. “They’re a little bit off fitness-wise especially when you’re stuck in hotel quarantine for two weeks,” he said. “They’ll take a bit of time, we’ll look after them. They’ve had a lot of hard pre-seasons in the past and have a good base, hopefully they’ll be right for round one.” Aloisi said while there will be plenty of familiar faces on the pitch this season, fans can expect a different style on the pitch. United will start their season with six matches in Melbourne, which is a bonus for the club and fans, who will be able to return to the stands. Aloisi said the first six rounds would be exciting for the side. “We’ve got confidence with the team we’ve got and the structure we’ve got,” he said. “It’s exciting for the playing group and the public to see live sport again.” Pain said he can’t wait to see the fans back in the stands. “It’s a strange thing to say football without fans...” “We know we have the quality to get up there, the first thing is to crack finals and see what happens after that.” Wednesday, 17 November, 2021 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY 15

What do you enjoy most about working in the family business? I find working in the family business is enjoyable, we trust one another and are all very committed to the company’s success. Learning from my successful father Robert has helped me, especially to understand the needs of our customers. What’s most interesting about Werribee South is that the farming community is generational. Our key accounts and customers have been with us for decades. Market gardening is an extremely niche market. Apart from your father Robert, mother Daphne and aunt Melissa, do any other family members work in the business too? At the moment, no, however, I have two younger brothers, who may be interested in joining the family business in the future. Do your grandparents sometimes still pop into the business to say hello? Both my grandparents, Robert senior and Vilma, are still very interested in our business and its operations. How the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the business? We have been very fortunate in the fact we’ve had a very strong growth period during the pandemic – favourable vegetable commodity prices have seen an increased demand for machinery. It’s been a great 12 months.

Do you have any plans for the business, into the future? I would like to continue my family’s legacy and ensure the company’s good management. Also, R.P. Motors is currently constructing a multimillion-dollar service facility, which is due to be completed by the end of the year. In addition to R.P. Wyndham leads the vaccine way Connolly’s Corner, with Tarneit MP, Sarah Connolly Welcome back folks! It’s been a rough few months as we’ve collectively grappled with the effects of the Delta variant of COVID-19, but we’re finally reaching that light at the end of the tunnel. We knew from the beginning that we would need to vaccinate our way out of the pandemic – and once those vaccines started arriving, we got them into our arms as quickly as we could and are now seeing the results. Thanks to the collective efforts of all Victorians, nearly 85 per cent of our population aged over 12 has now been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. We have seen, just over a few weeks, restrictions ease and a COVID-safe environment for the fully vaccinated beginning to form. This is the endgame that Victorians have fought so hard for, as we move ever closer to a return to normality. For our community in particular, we have shown the rest of Victoria what a high vaccine uptake is – clearly showing that all we needed was the supply of vaccines. In August, barely half of Wyndham had received their first dose, with only around a quarter being fully vaccinated. Fast forward three months, and we have become the envy of Melbourne. More than 95 per cent of eligible people in Wyndham have had their first dose and an outstanding 93.2 per cent have been fully vaccinated. By rolling up our sleeves and getting the jab, we are one of the most vaccinated communities in metropolitan Melbourne – leading the way for the rest of Melbourne’s western suburbs, all of whom are now quickly catching up. Contrary to what you might hear, Melbourne’s west is not a community of anti-vaxxers. We’re not afraid to roll up our sleeves and we value the expertise of our health experts. We know firsthand how COVID-19 can ravage a community and we’ve said ‘never again.’ We know getting COVID harms our ability to work and provide for our families. We know the threat the virus poses not just to us, but our friends and family, some of whom may not be able to be vaccinated at all. That’s why the vaccine is so important. And I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the tremendous effort of our local GPs and healthcare workers, who have been on the frontline of this pandemic since the start of last year. Every conversation they’ve had with someone hesitant about the vaccine that has ended in a jab in the arm is a small victory against this virus, and they should be proud of their tireless work in keeping our community safe. We’re so close now to seeing further changes to restrictions at 90 per cent fully vaxxed and beyond, so let me finish by encouraging everyone in Wyndham to safely enjoy the freedoms they’ve won by getting vaccinated. Go and see a movie at the cinema or go out for a drink at the pub. Enjoy the summer – you’ve earned it.

Point Cook Centrals focus on the season ahead Point Cook Centrals senior football coach Dean Chambers says the club is feeling “buoyant” ahead of the next season. Chambers, who was recently appointed along with new assistant coaches Alan Williams and Gary Buckley, said the club officially started its pre-season training yesterday at Alamanda Reserve. He said that 2021 has been “a frustrating year for everyone” with the season ending prematurely. “With some personal changes in both the coaching staff and some welcome additions, everyone is buoyant about the 2022 season and our vision of wanting to play finals again,” Chambers added. “We have added approximately 12 new players that will bring some fresh excitement to our existing playing group.” Chambers said the Point Cook Centrals were always keen for new players to join their teams, including boys and girls across the all age groups from the under-9s through to under-18.5 players. “We are very much an all-inclusive sporting club with both football and netball,” he said. “We are all for supporting and working with

Duzel makes an impact Western United young gun Luke Duzel made an instant impact in the Olyroos squad as he helped the Australian team qualify for next year’s Asian Cup. Duzel was one of three United players who travelled to Dubai as part of the squad, along with Noah Botic and Adisu Bayew. For the trio, it was the first time they had been named in the Olyroos squad, the Australian under-23 national team, with Duzel and Bayew making their debuts Having represented Australia previously at a younger age group level, Duzel said it was nice to have the opportunity to represent his country again. “It was great to put on the jersey again,” he said after returning to Australia. “It’s always good, even just getting out of the country was good. “I was relieved [to get in the squad]. Arm with plastic bags and gloves, they divided up into small groups and spent an hour picking up litter from in and around Featherbrook Reserve. “When groups returned we weighed in all the rubbish collected – total weight was 135 kilograms,” Chambers said. Chambers said he and the assistant coaches wanted to instill the value of respect in the club, relating to “who we are and the role we play within the community”. “As part of our new culture we want to become more community focused,” Chambers said. He said the weekend event was the first time that Point Cook Centrals has conducted a rubbish collection activity. “The group thought it was a fantastic initiative and they were overwhelmed of how much rubbish was collected in such a short period of time,” he said. The trip to Dubai which included 38 degree heat was a short one, wth Duzel back in Australia and preparing for the upcoming A-League season. Duzel was lucky to avoid having to quarantine as he is fully vaccinated. He said things had been going well under new coach John Aloisi. “John is different from the coach before,” he said. “He has a more quiet personna. I like what I have seen so far and it’s been really good and everyone is buying into what he is doing. ‘We’re trying to keep it positive. We’re looking game by game and hopefully we can
get back into finals.” Personally, Duzel said he was keen to try and get more minutes after making massive inroads last season, including starting several games. Duzel said he had loved his time at United, having previously been with Melbourne City. Having grown up living in Sydenham, playing for a western suburbs team is a dream come true. “I played at Melbourne Knights and started my junior career there. “I was then in the state squad and moved onto Melbourne City. I moved to Western United when I was 17. “When I heard a club would be in the west that was close to me, I didn’t think much about it. The coaches didn’t have to pressure me too much.” Meanwhile, United returned to the field on Saturday in their first official match in a number of months. A $3.8 million project to build a new football pavilion at Galvin Park has been completed. Werribee MP Tim Pallas and Wyndham councillors gathered on Thursday to celebrate the occasion. The council invested $2.8 million in the project while the state government contributed $1 million under the Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program. Galvin Park is home to Werribee City Football Club, which has more than 260 players. The new pavilion features six new female-friendly change rooms, a community social room, a large kitchen and canteen, public toilets, modern referee facilities and new car parking spaces. The councillors and Mr Pallas also visited Warringa Reserve in Hoppers Crossing on Thursday, to view a new automatic irrigation system that has been installed to provide sports teams with a more weatherproof oval, which is capable of hosting games throughout the year. The irrigation project was made possible thanks to $60,000 in funding from the state government’s Community Cricket Program. Warringa Reserve is home to the Wyndham All Abilities Football Cricket Club and Hoppers Crossing Junior Cricket Club. Mr Pallas said the new sports pavilion and oval irrigation system would provide an incentive for Wyndham sports clubs to ramp up their training and development, and for even more locals to join in the fun. “For too long clubs like the Wyndham All Abilities Football Cricket Club, Hoppers Crossing Junior Cricket and Werribee City FC have been hamstrung by outdated facilities – they deserve appropriate facilities they can be proud of,” he said.
