Victoria University Polytechnic students have helped send a big thank you to frontline healthcare workers helping get Victorians vaccinated. The team of culinary students prepared 400 lunches at Nicholson Street campus’ ‘Venue’ last week, delivering them to healthcare workers across testing and vaccination hubs in Sunshine, Sunbury, Melton, Werribee and Flemington Showgrounds. VU associate director major partnerships Natalie Zaibak said VU has been looking for ways to show appreciation for the heavy load placed on frontline Western Health healthcare workers over the past 18 months. “We wanted to do a day where we provide them some lunches and we thought why not get our certificate three and certificate four commercial cookery students involved.” Ms Zaibak said the gesture was also a valuable real-life scenario to give the Polytechnic students some practical training in planning for a large scale event. Youngest ever mayor By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council has elected its youngest every mayor, while Hobsons Bay’s longest serving councillor has been returned to the top job for the third time. River Ward councillor Anthony Tran, 22, last week become one of the youngest councillors to ever become a mayor in Victoria’s history, hoping his election will help break “the bamboo ceiling”. Meanwhile long-serving Hobsons Bay councillor Peter Hemphill was elected on
Friday night to his third term as Hobsons Bay mayor during 22 years as a councillor. Elected by his fellow councillors during a special meeting on Tuesday night, Cr Tran – the son of Vietnamese refugees – thanked his family and friends for their support in a speech delivered in both English and Vietnamese. He also thanked the community elders who had put faith in the second generation. “Without your guidance, without your assistance, without the shoulders of giants on which we climb, we would not be here,” he
said. “But I think tonight is more than just electing a new mayor … tonight I hope to set a precedent and that precedent is that for more young people – the youth of diverse cultural communities – to find the courage and to find the ability to step up into this world that for so long, for far too long, has been dominated by a particular, a singular, demographic.” Cr Tran said he hoped his representation can inspire other young people to follow their dreams. River ward councillor Sarah Carter was
elected deputy mayor. Cr Hemphill paid tribute to outgoing mayor Jonathon Marsden, praising his strong leadership during a challenging year. “The year ahead presents many great opportunities,” he said. “As a city we are beginning to emerge and rebuild from COVID and I want to ensure Council does all it can to boost business and community spirit in the COVID recovery.” Wetlands ward councillor Diana Grima was elected deputy mayor.

Push for new bilingual program By Benjamin Millar A new Vietnamese-English bilingual program would be introduced in a Braybrook early learning centre under an ambitious plan being pushed by local advocacy group VietSpeak. VietSpeak is seeking a $25,000 contribution from Maribyrnong council to help attract matched funding to establish a three-year bilingual program at Goodstart Childcare Centre in Braybrook, a suburb where 30 per cent of the population speak Vietnamese at home. An open letter to the council asking for $25,000 towards the proposal notes that the contribution would attract Australian Research Council (ARC) funding for the project.
The campaign comes after Maribyrnong lost the country’s only Vietnamese-English bilingual program when Footscray Primary School (FPS) cut its program last year in favour of an Italian
language program. VietSpeak member Brendan Duong said the decision went against the wishes of a majority of surveyed parents and despite an online petition against ending the program that attracted 18,000 signatories. “I was born, raised and went to school locally in Maribyrnong and regret not having better opportunities to learn my parent’s language and culture,” he said. “Going to school in an English-only curriculum meant that my mother-language was shunned and shamed”. Tanya Tran, a second-generation Vietnamese-Australian West Footscray resident, said families like hers need education programs to support their children sustaining linguistic-cultural knowledge and identity.
VietSpeak has engaged with Little Multilingual Minds (LMM), a group of language education specialists in the Centre of Excellence for Dynamics of Language, funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC). They are seeking to establish a new Vietnamese-English bilingual program at Goodstart Childcare Centre in Braybrook. The three-year program would include professional development for other staff in the centre on how to support multilingual learners. Maribyrnong councilor Jorge Jorquera raised a notice of motion at Tuesday night’s council meeting calling on the council to “lend concrete support” to VietSpeak in developing a Vietnamese-English bilingual language program at the centre.

Running for men’s mental health For Footscray local Liam Henderson, last Thursday’s 160-kilometre run for charity has been a long time coming. The personal trainer, who started running at the beginning of the first lockdown last year, completed his run in 21 hours and 45 minutes, remarking that it was testament to what you can achieve if you want it badly enough. “I started running just for something to do, and then last year I ended up running a 100km race in December,” Mr Henderson said. When Melbourne was plunged back into lockdown again this year, Mr Henderson took this opportunity to run even more and to put his training to good use.
“I started raising money for Movember and then I just had this idea [to run 160km]. The 100km is the first milestone and then the next milestone is the 100 miles, so that’s why it’s 160km,” he said. Mr Henderson chose to support Movember, a leading men’s mental health charity, because of the huge mental toll lockdown has had on not only the broader community, but some of his close friends. “I think lockdown was pretty tough. I had a few mates that went through it pretty tough as well,” he said. “Everyone’s mental health took a toll through lockdown, and I just thought it would be good
to raise awareness and maybe get some people talking about how they’re feeling.” Mr Henderson acknowledges that men’s mental health is a huge, ongoing issue. “I think we all sort of want to put on a front that [we’re] doing fine,” he said. “[It would be good] if people can start talking about how they’re feeling, because everyone’s going through it. “You don’t need to try and hide it, that’s what I’m trying to show people.” Details: au.movember.com/liamhenderson or instagram.com/henderson.fit
Yarraville author Maxine Beneba Clarke has taken out the people’s choice award in this year’s prestigious Melbourne Prize for Literature. Christos Tsiolkas won the $60,000 top prize, while the $20,000 Professional Development Award went to Evelyn Araluen. The winner of the $15,000 Writer’s Prize 2021 was Eloise Grills. Maxine Beneba Clarke was awarded the $3000 Civic Choice Award 2021 after being shortlisted for the main prize. Launched in 2004 and awarded every three years, the Melbourne Prize was established to recognise and reward talent, excellence and inspire creative development. This year’s judges included leading literary identities Declan Fry, Alice Pung and Sydney Writers Festival artistic director Michael Williams. Melbourne Prize Trust executive director Simon Warrender said it has been an outstanding year for the prize, which supports the abundant literary talent in Victoria. “Melbourne is fortunate to be designated as a UNESCO City of Literature, which enhances our already thriving literary sector,” he said. Creative Industries Minister Danny Pearson said this year’s nominees represent our premier storytellers. “If you haven’t discovered their work, or caught up on their latest endeavours, then look no further than this group to create your summer reading list,” he said. “I congratulate this year’s finalists and commend them for their resilience in continuing to inspire, challenge and entertain us through difficult times.”

Nomination a boost for para-badminton Footscray’s Ian Bridge has been announced as a finalist for the coach of the year at the 2021 Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation (VDSR) Awards. Mr Bridge coaches para-badminton and was lucky enough to go to Tokyo earlier this year as a coach for the paralympic team, where the sport debuted for the first time. “It was kinda making a new headway for us as a sport and then for us in Australia, we’re obviously a little bit behind than all the other countries,” he said. “It was a good experience.” Mr Bridge played badminton when he was back in the UK but never at a national or international level. He spent many years coaching badminton in schools and clubs, and after moving to Australia took up a position coaching para-badminton
which he had never done before. “I hadn’t done any disability coaching at that point. I started off with a blank canvas of no coaching materials for working with people with disabilities and then just started networking and found my way in trying different routines and processes,” Mr Bridge said. He admits it was challenging at first but he was able to get creative with his coaching style and adapt to working with people with disabilities. “Coaching with disabilities falls nicely into that [creative] arena because you’ve got to be thinking, what fits one person doesn’t fit another and it’s a real challenge,” he said. “I had 14 people one day and I wanted to do a warm-up and I looked across the line up in
front of me [and] I had one person with one leg, one with one arm, a number of wheelchairs … some were old, some were young. “It’s a real interesting one and I think it can be quite daunting, but I just thought alright, crack on with it, go for it and see how it goes from there.” Mr Bridge said it was fantastic that there were awards celebrating and recognising sportspeople with disabilities and the people, like coaches, who support them. While he was flattered with the nomination, he is more grateful for what the recongition will do for badminton. “Regardless of what happens it will be good for the sport and for me as an individual it’s obviously very nice that somebody’s taken the time and recognised some of the work that

you put into it,” he said. “For me it’s another way to get badminton mentioned in a bigger arena which would actually raise awareness.” The VDSR awards night will be held on Tuesday, November 23. Molly Magennis

Hobsons Bay’s best businesses By Benjamin Millar Hobsons Bay’s best businesses have been recognised for their efforts in providing excellent service despite the dramatic impacts of the COVID-19 lockdowns. The winners of Hobsons Bay Council’s biennial Business Excellence Awards were announced during an online award ceremony held on Thursday night. An independent judging panel selected the five category winners from almost 100 entries in the awards, which shine a spotlight on the businesses driving the community forward
despite the significant impacts of the pandemic. Pelvic Health Melbourne won the award for Excellence in Customer Experience, Self Defence Hub took out the Creating Social Change award and Eco Laundry Room collected the award for Excellence in Sustainability. Mama Movement was named best New Start Up Business and Seaworks Foundation was recognised with the Pivoting During COVID-19 award. Each winner receives a trophy and voucher to help further grow and promote their business. Former Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon
Marsden said while the last two years have been tough for everyone, small businesses have borne the brunt of the burden of this pandemic here in Melbourne. “I take my hat off to our local traders for pivoting their business and surviving this tumultuous time,” he said. “One of the positive outcomes is the way the Hobsons Bay community has rallied behind our local businesses – buying gift vouchers, ordering takeaway, going out of their way to shop local and basically doing whatever they can to put cash in the hands of our business owners to help them get through the pandemic.”
Cr Marsden said this level of support stands as a testament to how much the community values its local businesses. “But this astonishing level of goodwill has not just sprung from nothing – it has been earned by several years of exemplary customer service, support and sponsorships of local activities and initiatives, and through the excellent relationships local businesses have built with their clients and community,” he said. “We continue to encourage the Hobsons Bay community to ‘shop local, support local’ to contribute to saving local jobs, local projects and the local economy.”
Inner-west local heroes Three inner-west recipients have been recognised as 2021 Westfield Local Heroes as part of the annual community recognition and grants program. Now in its fourth year, the Westfield Local Heroes program recognises and promotes community role models whose activities help create positive outcomes for others. Ali Halkic of Bully Zero, Alyshia Clarke of Dance 4 All and Jocelyn Bignold of McAuley Community Services for Women were the three winners of this year’s awards for the Airport West area. Each Westfield Local Hero has been awarded a $10,000 grant to recognise the positive impact they are making to the local community. Ali Halkic has reached more than 500,000 people with his bullying prevention workshops since he set up his Bully Zero organisation. He has been combatting the dangers of bullying since his son Allem took his own life
after being bullied by a former friend. Dance teacher Alyshia Clarke set up Dance 4 All to break down barriers for children with autism, who often feel excluded from social and sporting programs. She said dancing helps the children’s physical, cognitive and social development. Jocelyn Bignold leads McAuley Community Services for Women, an organisation that helps more than one thousand women and children experiencing family violence and homelessness annually. She is the driving force behind the non-profit, which operates a range of crisis to long-term accommodation, provides support and advocates for the women and children. Westfield Airport West centre manager Karla Quinn said the Local Heroes program continues to recognise and reward everyday people doing extraordinary things in our communities.

Pitch ideas to the new mayor By Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill I am humbled that my council colleagues saw fit to elect me as mayor to represent my community for the coming 12 months. I will be joined by Wetlands ward councillor Diana Grima, who was elected as deputy mayor. This will be my third term as mayor, a great privilege, and I will continue to serve the community as I have for more than 20 years – with pride and a willingness to make Hobsons Bay the best it can be. My mayoral program will be set out in coming weeks, but I have already indicated that championing council’s virtual energy network is a priority. An annual initiative that always brings great ideas and outcomes for the community is Community Pitch 2022-23. We are inviting the community to submit an idea for a project, program or initiative that will bring people together, encourage sustainable living or encourage and promote an inclusive, equitable and healthy community. Unlike previous years, capital works and infrastructure won’t be included this time around and all ideas must align with the recently adopted Council Plan 2021-25 and demonstrate a strong community benefit. There is a proposed total of $600,000 is available (subject to council budget adoption) as part of the Community Pitch program with up to $50,000 for each successful idea. Shortlisted projects will then go to a community vote to determine which projects will become a reality. Council officers are available online
Briefs Green bin roll-out Lime green-lidded bins are now being delivered to stand-alone houses throughout Maribyrnong for residents to recycle their home’s food and garden waste. The bin will be collected fortnightly – on the alternate week recycling bins are collected, and the waste material will be recycled into compost to be used on farms, parks and gardens across Victoria. Properties that do not have the space for another 240 litre bin can apply for a smaller 120L bin and residents who produce little to no food and garden waste or are composting at home can also apply for an exemption.

Cubby upgrade is a win for all By Benjamin Millar A popular cubby house at Williamstown North Primary School has been given an accessibility upgrade thanks to a joint project by inner-west Rotary groups. The Rotary Clubs of Altona, Williamstown and Yarraville combined to improve access to the cubby for students with mobility issues.
Rotary Altona’s Gus Garnsworthy said a current pupil and his sister, who will attend next year, are both confined to wheelchairs as part of their treatment for Perthes disease. Mr Garnsworthy said the cubby house in the school’s playground only had access via loose tan bark and the wall facing the school had no opening for pupils to access the cubby. “It was therefore very difficult for a student
with mobility issues to play with their friends in the cubby, thus limiting their ability to socialise with their peers,” he said. “This project enabled such students to be easily wheeled into the cubby house and provided access to the small adjacent raised deck area and other areas – it is envisaged that all students will benefit from easier access to the area.”
Williamstown based Zisis Construction was engaged to carry out the works, with Altona and Williamstown Rotary Club members working on site in conjunction with the builder. “The success of the project has been shown by the number of students that gravitated to the area when they returned from holidays,” Mr Garnsworthy said.
VU’s Gaye Hamilton named senior of the year Victoria University Deputy Chancellor Gaye Hamilton has been honoured as the 2022 Victoria Senior Australian of the Year. The 2022 Victoria Australian of the Year Awards were announced last Wednesday night in an online presentation, with athlete, paralympian, philanthropist, media commentator and advocate Dylan Alcott named The 2022 Victoria Australian of the Year. Ms Hamilton, 71, was recognised for her unwavering enthusiasm for Melbourne’s west through her roles as VU deputy chancellor, Western Bulldogs Community Foundation chair and State Sports Centres Trust director. Her citation noted that although the COVID-19 pandemic hit many industries such as tertiary institutions hard, she helped Victoria University navigate the breadth and complexity of pandemic-related issues. “Victoria University went on to be voted number one in Australia for employability – a remarkable achievement in a sector hit hard by COVID-19,” it stated. “Meanwhile, as chair of the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation, she has supported
and guided the organisation to redirect all programs to digital creative platforms. “This has ensured it maintains engagement with the community and those in need, even during Victoria’s extensive lockdown.” Youth Activating Youth co-founder Ahmed Hassan was named 2022 Victoria Young Australian of the Year while Mallacoota State Emergency Service volunteer Leo op den Brouw is the 2022 Victoria Local Hero. The winning entries in the 2021 Picturing Footscray Photography Prize have been announced, with votes still open on the people’s choice award. ‘Every Which Way’ by Sally Coggle took out the $3000 first prize, with second prize of $1000 going to ‘Everything is Fine’ by Jake Lowe. Third prize of $500 went to ‘Borderline’ by Mark Davidson and ‘Lucky Dip’ by Sarah Gardiner picked up the $500 student prize. Major sewer upgrade to begin The $200 million duplication of the Hobsons Bay Main Sewer will begin in coming months after the works contract was awarded to construction giant John Holland Group. More than 20 jobs will be created during one of the largest ever upgrades to Melbourne Water’s sewerage network, with the pipeline responsible for carrying more than 30 per cent of Melbourne’s wastewater to the Western Treatment Plant (WTP). Water Minister Lisa Neville said the project highlights the state government’s commitment to delivering essential water infrastructure to
support the city’s growing population. “This sewer, originally built in the 1960s and which runs under the Yarra River from Westgate Park in Port Melbourne to Spotswood, is integral to the Melbourne sewerage network,” Ms Neville said. “This significant investment will ensure the reliability of Melbourne’s sewage service for the next century – and also creating local jobs.” Melbourne Water major project delivery general manager Eamonn Kelly said John Holland Group was successful in securing the contract after an extensive tender process.
“We’re delighted to announce John Holland Group has been selected as the preferred contractor to carry out this important project as part of our overall upgrade to the Hobsons Bay Main Sewer,” he said. “Melbourne Water has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with John Holland to deliver a wide range of our projects. “Once the duplicate sewer is complete it will allow flows to be diverted from the original pipeline.” John Holland infrastructure executive general manager Andrew English said the
company is proud to continue its long-term partnership with Melbourne Water. “This will benefit millions of Melburnians and importantly, create opportunities for people to join our industry,” he said. “The project will partner with Melbourne Water to create two annual scholarships and ongoing employment for Aboriginal university students, and 12 traineeships and apprenticeships.” Works on the upgrade will begin at Scienceworks early next year and the project is due for completion in 2024.
Former minister Wade Noonan joins Victoria Uni Former Williamstown MP and state government minister Wade Noonan has been appointed to a key strategic role at Victoria University. Last Wednesday, Mr Noonan was announced as VU’s new deputy vice-chancellor external relations and partnerships, a role he said will combine his advocacy for the western suburbs with the chance to directly contribute to VU’s vision and future. “I’m passionate about the west and ambitious about how VU can help shape its future,” he said. “To be joining VU at a critical time of its growth and transformation is hugely exciting.” Mr Noonan said the university sits well poised to deliver “campuses of the future” built on ethical values and conscious partnering. “To do this well will require deeper alliances with like-minded industry partners and the delivery of the ‘flipped campus’ model brings smart and creative minds together,” he said.
Mr Noonan served as the member for the state seat of Williamstown from 2007 to 2018 . He has recently served as executive director of the West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA), playing a role in developing a 20-year blueprint for Melbourne’s North and West City Deal. United’s ready and raring to go After the “longest pre-season in the world” Western United will take to the pitch at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium this Saturday to kick start the 2021-22 A-League season. Tara Murray spoke with new coach John Aloisi and player Connor Pain ahead of the big match against Melbourne Victory.

fter another off-season full of lockdowns and restrictions, Western United’s Connor Pain can’t wait to take to the field this weekend. Pain and his teammates will kick off their A-League season against Melbourne Victory. Pain admits that the off-season was just as much a mental battle as one of trying to stay in shape and ready for the season. “It’s probably been the longest pre-season in the world,” he said. “The season creeping up now it’s obviously exciting to get everything started. “Aside from friendlies and stuff, it would have been four to five months, it felt like a long time. “The training is great and all that, but we play for a reason and we can’t wait to get back into competitive games.” For Pain, who is one of the club’s original players, this pre-season has been slightly different. With a new coach in John Aloisi and a number of new players, there has been plenty of excitement on the track. It’s the first time Pain has worked with Aloisi. “It has been great, it has been obviously intense, good to have some new ideas around the place and some new faces, not just in the coaching department,” Pain said. “It has been an interesting change, but it has been good so far and we’re just looking to implement what we are working on. “It’s been really good and really positive. There are obviously really high standards in the camp and I can’t say a bad word about him so far.”

Pain said the group could see some of the magic that the new international players could produce. He said they had all integrated seamlessly. “It has been an odd one with COVID and getting all the foreigners here, [I] only really met a couple of them in the last week or two,” he said. “All of them in their own way have shown something. It’s a good mixture and range of positions and they’re only going to add to the good group of Aussies we have.” Pain isn’t the only one itching for the season to begin, with Aloisi keen to get his United
coaching career under way. The former Australian star said he didn’t realise how much he missed coaching until he hit the training track. “You realise how much you miss it when you get back in,” he said. “Finally back on the grass again, I have really enjoyed it. It gives you that energy again. “When you miss it, you reflect on things. The energy is there which is good from my part, excited to be back on the pitch.” Aloisi said he had been impressed by the whole playing group and how they had attacked the pre-season. It hadn’t been an easy one, with some players saying it was the hardest pre-season they had been through, he said. “The boys have really taken on board what we are trying to do as a team and club,” he said. “They’ve been working really hard, which is the most important thing. The buy-in of the players has been exceptional, as a coach it makes your job so much easier and it actually helps the younger players get back to the level. “Everyone in general has been working really well from the younger players to the older players. They’ve all worked really hard, and we’ve trained hard and for a lot of them it’s the hardest pre-season. “They’ve done the most important thing I look at, everyone has different talents, but in terms of work ethic you look for, all of the players have shown they are willing to work and work for each other, that helps the team bond as well.” While Aloisi had been impressed with the whole squad, he said players such as Dylan
Pierias and Lachlan Wales had really benefited from being in the Australian Olympic team Three other players have just returned from the Olyroos Asian Cup qualifiers. He said Josh Risdon would also be like a new recruit after an injury-riddled season last year. Aloisi said the club was still doing some last minute preparations as it looked to fire come the start of the season. He said the imports were starting to find their feet after hotel quarantine had an early impact. “They’re a little bit off fitness-wise especially when you’re stuck in hotel quarantine for two weeks,” he said. “They’ll take a bit of time, we’ll look after them. They’ve had a lot of hard pre-seasons in the past and have a good base, hopefully they’ll be right for round one.” Aloisi said while there will be plenty of familiar faces on the pitch this season, fans can expect a different style on the pitch. United will start their season with six matches in Melbourne, which is a bonus for the club and fans, who will be able to return to the stands. Aloisi said the first six rounds would be exciting for the side. “We’ve got confidence with the team we’ve got and the structure we’ve got,” he said. “It’s exciting for the playing group and the public to see live sport again.” Pain said he can’t wait to see the fans back in the stands. “It’s a strange thing to say football without fans...” “We know we have the quality to get up there, the first thing is to crack finals and see what happens after that.”

“She sent me straight off that morning for a transvaginal ultrasound and she got me in to see a gynaecological oncologist that night and I had the surgery the next week. “No one thought that I would have ovarian cancer because I was young, I was 34 – largely, it’s women in their 50s, 60s, 70s who are diagnosed – and I have no history of ovarian or breast cancer in my family. “So, no one suspected that it could be ovarian cancer; they could see that I had a large cyst attached to one of my ovaries and that the ovary was damaged and that the cyst and the ovary would need to be removed. “When I woke up, my gyne-oncologist told me that she was very sorry but she’d found ovarian cancer and had to undertake a radical hysterectomy. “It was very shocking for a young woman to have that experience but I know my cancer was diagnosed early, it hadn’t spread and I know how lucky I am.” Ms Benson said she knew her story was not typical for most women with ovarian cancer, which prompted her to offer her services to Ovarian Cancer Australia in 2006. The same year, she and spouse Stephen Conroy, a former Labor senator, had baby girl 12459042-CG36-20

Isabella with the help of a surrogate mother and a separate egg donor. “I do have a beautiful daughter,” Ms Benson said. “She’s 14 now. “I was very fortunate. One of my girlfriends donated eggs and another girlfriend carried her for me, so I’m very lucky to be a mum.” On learning of her Australia Day recognition, Ms Benson said she hoped it would raise more awareness of ovarian cancer. “When I first found out about it I felt quite
emotional really thinking about everything that we at Ovarian Cancer Australia have achieved over the past decade,” she said. “But I was just reflecting today, the same week that I found out about potentially receiving the award, I heard about another friend of mine who’s just been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer and it was very grounding. “We’ve achieved so much, we’ve done so much and I’m so proud of that but there is still so much more to do and we can’t rest until it’s
done.” Ovarian Cancer Australia said under Ms Benson’s stewardship the organisation had achieved significant milestones, including developing and implementing Australia’s first national action plan for ovarian cancer research, securing $3 million federal funding for the Traceback ovarian cancer prevention program and the commitment of $20 million for ovarian cancer research from the federal government’s Medical Research Future Fund.

Get your outdoor entertaining area ready for summer As we approach the warmer months and the summer festive season, you may notice that your outdoor area is looking a little worse for wear. Refresh paved areas Visit your local hardware store and find a paver or concrete cleaner suitable for your pavers at home. You can use a brush and a bit of elbow grease, but for best results a pressure cleaner should be used to blast away dirt, mold, grime and other nasties. Pick the first of a few sunny days to clean your pavers and then let them dry for a day or two. You can also purchase paints or sealants for your pavers to keep their colour vibrant and clean, and extend the longevity of the outdoor area. Refilling gravel or sand in between pavers or around your entertaining area will also keep it looking polished and fresh.
Stain or paint your deck If your deck and railings are looking a bit dull or shabby, you may need to recoat them with either a stain or paint. When deciding on the colour and finish, it is important to consider the products previously used on the timber. Oil-based stains will sink into the timber and fade away with time, as opposed to acrylic or water-based stains that sit on the surface and peel or flake away.
Preparation is key when restaining or painting a deck – the surface must be clean and stripped back of any previous product or dirt to ensure a pristine, lasting finish. Scrub or pressure clean your deck, or use a timber stripper to remove past products. The type of stain you use will determine the application method, but your local hardware experts will be able to advise you on the tools and techniques required to get your desired result.

Altona Sports Cricket Club breaking new ground The Altona Sports Cricket Club has seen major growth thanks to its push towards building a more multicultural and diverse community. The club is seeing record numbers for the upcoming season and is fielding four senior sides this year, up from three last year in the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association. Club president and first XI captain Liam Brennan said while the growth of the club can be attributed to the pandemic and an increase in people wanting to be involved in local sport, the club’s focus on inclusivity has been a driving factor. “Our competition had four divisions 10 years ago, I think we now have 15 divisions. So it’s huge, the entire western suburbs have
really just gone crazy for cricket,” he said. “But recently we’ve made a real push into multiculturalism [and] bringing people from all different backgrounds into the club. “Not just multiculturalism, but providing a place where people from all different backgrounds can play.” Brennan says one of the ways the club tries to be more inclusive is by providing low cost memberships. “One of the things we do is we have a very low membership fee, so basically we have sponsors that come onboard that help pay for the players to play,” he said. “It’s basically a $5 membership fee to play for the season where most clubs you’re looking at $300 – $400.”
For Brennan, cricket is not just a sport but rather a way for people to connect with others from all walks of life. “When it comes to game day everyone’s equal, everyone’s the same,” he said. “It’s a great way for people to learn life skills [and] learn about different cultures. That’s one of the things we want to promote, is that cricket is a very multicultural game. “It’s not just about playing cricket, it’s about helping people be the best people they can be. Long wait nearly over By Molly Magennis Spotswood will have to wait another week to get its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season under way. Having spent 92 years in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association, the move is a welcome change as the club works to build from the bottom up after losing some experienced ex-districts players in recent years. Club president John Wheeler said the move was massive with the club and its players excited to get the season under way, which was meant to take place on Saturday but was washed out. The match against Taylors Lakes has been rescheduled to December 5. “The move to subbies was a big call but for us it’s about trying to build the club, especially through our juniors,” he said. “We’ve been really fortunate, our coach Dan Schuppan has really led the way. This is his third year as coach and we’ve developed a really great culture at our club.”
Wheeler said that recent major upgrades such as new facilities and club rooms will help position the club as a place where new players want to come and where juniors can rise up the ranks. “We’ve got brand new synthetic and turf wickets which would rival anywhere in the competition, and our club rooms … are gonna be absolutely fantastic. “We believe along with our ground [and] our facilities that we’re gonna be a real go-to club.” No players have left the club despite the change of competitions, but there are few newcomers that will be joining for the new season, including batter Jarryd Vernon’s brother Riley Vernon. The younger Vernon played at Airport West St Christophers having previously been at his home club Gisborne. New youngster Jackson Wadden could be one to watch, Wheeler said. Wadden had been playing with Riddell in the Gisborne and
District Cricket Association. “We had a practise game last week and potentially he’s gonna be a good player. He’s very quick,” he said. “I think we’ve got some really good young players coming through our club that will help us get through the year.” While finals are not the definitive goal for this season, Wheeler said the players are going to work hard regardless. “We believe that our programs are going well [and] that we’ll be competitive anyway. We’ll start pushing through the ranks if we can [and] pushing some of our junior players through and see how we go. “We will really have a good red hot crack.” The club’s first XI will play Port Melbourne this Saturday at North Port Oval. Williamstown will face off against Moorabbin, Altona will take on Oakleigh and Yarraville will play Melton. The Victorian Turf Cricket Association also called off its matches on the weekend.
Williamstown has signed a new key forward as it prepares for the 2022 Victorian Football League season. Mitchell Langan, the second newcomer to sign on for next year, joins the club after spending two years at NAB league club Geelong Falcons. Despite his 2021 season being cut short due to a broken wrist, the 193 centimetre tall forward averaged more than four marks a game and kicked four goals in the three matches he was able to play. Langan said he was excited to be a part of such a successful club. “I’m keen to get down and meet all the boys and everyone involved,” the 19-year-old said. The signing of Langan follows that of up and coming midfielder Noah Lever. The 19-year-old on-baller is coming off a best-and-fairest at Geelong Football League club North Shore in his first season of senior football. Lever averaged 28.6 disposals in the GFL this year and is a former Geelong Falcon in the NAB League. Seagulls coach Justin Plapp said the club was keen to sign-up the rising midfielder. “We’re all about bringing quality people to our club, and he fits that from a character point of view,” Plapp said. “He’s a young player that has assets that we see he can fill, and he’s a competitive young man who has a point of difference in his ability to win the ball. We feel he is going to be a player that is going to feature really well in that part of the game for us.” The club has re-signed a number of players from this year, headed by Charlie Dean, who won this year’s FothergillRound-Mitchell Medal for the best young player in the competition. Forwards Noah Gown, Billy Myers and Darby Henderson, Joel Ottavi, Lachlan Stapleton, Liam Hunt, Jordan Gallucci, Teia Miles, Kallan Dawson, Jack Toner, Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds and Cam Polson are the other re-signings to be announced. Set your compass on new Jeep By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring The new Compass is out to point the way for Jeep to gain ground in the small sports utility vehicle segment, one of the most competitive markets in the automotive world. The legendary US four-wheel drive maker, famous for its Rubicon test regimen on the infamous eponymous trail, a 22-mile route, part road and part hellish 4x4 track, in the Sierra Nevada of the western United States, which all genuine off-road Jeeps have to endure during development, has imbued the MY22 Compass with the finer things in SUV life. As Tom Noble, marketing and communications manager, Jeep Australia puts it, since its launch in 2017, the Compass has been renowned for its off-road capability, now we’re pairing that with advanced technology and premium interior styling. The updated range kicks off with the Compass Launch Edition 2.4-litre petrol, six-speed automatic, front-wheel drive, with a focus on technology, safety and convenience in an affordable package – $37,950, plus on-road costs. The Compass Limited ups the ante with nine-speed auto and four-wheel drive, for $43,950, followed by the 80th Anniversary ($47,941), Compass S-Limited ($46,950) and the Trailhawk 2.0-litre turbodiesel ($51,250). On test was the Compass S-Limited.
Styling Although classified in the lightweight (compact) division, on first glance the Compass could well tip the scales into the middleweight class, such is the muscled body. The wagon maintains the traditional Jeep upright stance, restyled with sculpted surfaces and 3-D effect added to the seven-slot grille.

The once separate foglamp housing is now integrated into a single opening in the front bumper. The black-based S-Limited test car was accented with metallic grey finishes on roof, exterior badging and new Granite Crystal multi-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels. Termed Neutral Grey by the maker, blink and you’ll miss them. Neutral, indeed.
Interior Jeep’s genuine go-anywhere mid-range off-roaders, not generally known for their
stylish, premium craftsman-like cabin interiors, have taken a turn for the better with the new Compass S-Limited. Many elements of the cabin have been updated with special attention being given to the dashboard, centre console and door panels, all featuring quality materials. Added to this in the test vehicle were black headliner and grey accent stitching in keeping with the striking exterior. The controls are integrated and easy to reach, as is the touchscreen, which has been elevated to the top of the dash.
Storage has been expanded, with 5 litres of space situated under the centre armrest. There’s an extra 2.4 litres next to the gearshift able to take a small tablet or the like. The boot chips in with a massive 438 litres of luggage space. Access is via a new automatic tailgate, which can be opened by making a kicking motion under the bumper. Options intended to spoil the new owner include dual pane panoramic sun roof, ventilated and heated front seats, plus heated steering wheel and surround-view 360-degree camera.

Safety Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, standard on new Compass includes traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed assist, drowsy driver alert and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist recognition. Forward collision warning, lane sense departure warning, electronic stability control with electronic roll mitigation, plus front, side and curtain airbags are carried over from the previous generation.
Driving The Compass S-Limited 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine went about a not-too-demanding workload with up to five occupants, plus their gear without much fuss. Given a bit of a push off the mark, however, the odd gearshift was jerky but once up to cruising speed, the vehicle handled the bitumen and sections of gravel road with alacrity through efficient power delivery. Steering was on the stiff side, even on smooth bitumen. As for fuel consumption, Jeep claims a
combined urban / highway consumption of 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres. The test S-Limited recorded 10 litres per 100 kilometres across a range of driving conditions. At night the front lighting shone in more ways than one, the LED lamps twice as bright as the previous Xenons, with greater depth of field and wider beam. The seats were a trifle unwelcoming, being flat, firm and lacking lateral support, which could be a problem in rough going off road. Head and shoulder space were more-than ample for average-size occupants.
