Four hand-carved poles representing the values of Tarneit Rise Primary School have been installed within the school grounds. Principal Nadia Bettio said each of the poles featured a different native Australian animal, representing each value – respect, kindness, responsibility and growth. Ms Bettio said pupils suggested for, and voted on, the animals to be featured on the poles, which were created by Brandon from BK Carvings. “We wanted for people who walk past the school to be really proud of the values and beautiful gardens,” she said. The ‘values poles’ have been welcomed by the wider Tarneit community. “There have been lots and lots of positive comments on our social media posts,” Ms Bettio said. The school was recently recognised at the annual Victorian Education Excellence Awards. Tarneit Rise Primary won the category of outstanding provision for high-ability students. Ms Bettio said the school was “very, very proud” to receive the award.

Housing demand soars By Alesha Capone More than 17.000 people are waiting for social housing in the west of the state, including in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The state government recently released data about the number of Victorians waiting for social housing. The data shows that the west division, which includes Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Brimbank and Greater Geelong, has the highest number of social housing applicants in the state. According to the data, 17,045 submissions were received in the September quarter, up from 16,467 in the June quarter.

$5.3 billion Big Housing Build would result in more than 12,000 social housing homes being constructed across the state. “Work is already under way to deliver 111 new social housing homes in four projects in Werribee, Tarneit and Truganina,” the spokesperson said. “In addition to this, work on 20 new homes is underway in Wyndham as part of the government’s Building New Homes to Fight Homelessness program.” The spokesperson said the state government was working with community housing organisations, councils and community agencies to unlock land and increase the capacity of social housing providers.

In the dark on rail bridge lights By Alesha Capone A Werribee resident is calling for the Tarneit Road rail bridge’s main lights to be switched on, more than seven months after the site was officially opened. Joel Kimber said the road and footpath on the bridge, which was built as part of the Cherry Street level crossing removal, were still only being serviced by two small generator-powered lights – despite the bridge opening back in March. Mr Kimber, who frequently walks across

the bridge during mornings and evenings, said “it can be quite dangerous because of the darkness”. He said he was worried about the safety of other pedestrians and cyclists, who might not be seen by motorists due to the lack of illumination on the bridge. “There is only one side with a path to walk on, and that part of the bridge is quite narrow,” he said. “There are no barriers and the road and concrete of the footpath are right next each other, and the fear is that a car may not be able

to stop in time if they need to, if a driver does not see someone in the dark.” Mr Kimber said that when his daughters walked across the bridge, he encouraged them to walk “as far away from the edge of the footpath as possible”. He also contacted the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) about how long it is taking to switch the bridge lights on. “I work in government so I do understand how long things can take, but I think it’s inexcusable,” Mr Kimber said. A Powercor spokesman said the lights and

the connections on the bridge were being built by a contractor for the Department of Transport. “Powercor’s role is to connect them once this work has been completed and met all safety requirements,” he said. “At this stage, we are waiting for the contractors to complete their work and undergo the relevant safety checks.” The spokesperson said Powercor would connect the lights “as soon as is practical once we’ve been informed the work is complete”.

A picture of cultural understanding Truganina artist Mita Chowdhury says that she enjoys everything about being a painter, from the creative process to showing people her work. Chowdhury said she has been creating art since she was a child growing up in Bangladesh, before studying at art school. She moved to Australia in 2007 and commenced a bachelor of fine arts at RMIT University in 2018, which she will complete this year. Chowdhury said that balancing her roles as a wife, mother and student has been “a hell of a journey”. “But I loved every minute of it,” she said. Her art explores the social responsibility of being a mother and woman across multiple cultures, including the challenges she

has faced “as a woman of colour living in diaspora”. Chowdhury said she aimed to bring together both the eastern and western cultures she has an insight into and create a common dialogue between them. Chowdhury said that she does not consider herself a feminist but that her art could be “very feminist”. “Art is like my voice, it is what I want to speak about,” she said. “I can express myself through art.” Chowdhury’s first solo exhibition in Australia was held in Melbourne in April and May. Her second solo exhibition will be at the Incinerator Gallery, in Moonee Valley, in 2022.

Along with her love of art, Chowdhury said she was passionate about helping the community. In the school holidays, she runs free workshops for children about how to turn leftover household items into art. She also runs an awareness program for mental health wellbeing among women. Chowdhury has received a grant from Wyndham council to run a socially-engaged art project, which has been cancelled twice due to COVID. Chowdhury said she hopes to hold the event later this year. The state government has announced works will soon get under way to upgrade the Point Cook and Sneydes Road intersection, under a $15.27 million project that will result in traffic lights being installed at the site. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said last week that the design of the intersection upgrade is being finalised. As part of the works, Point Cook Road will be widened to allow for extra lanes. Shared user paths will also be upgraded, and new pedestrian crossings and better lighting installed. Crews will also widen Point Cook Road between Jamieson Way and Gramercy Boulevard – and new lanes created – to improve traffic flow. The work will see four lanes installed for drivers entering the intersection from Sanctuary Lakes and three lanes for traffic coming from the other direction. A second lane will also be created for traffic entering Sneydes Road, where crews will construct a new median island. The release of the final designs comes as work is set to begin to relocate underground utilities at the intersection, which must be complete before major construction begins in mid-2022. “This major upgrade will boost safety for road users, cyclists and pedestrians and improve in Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes,” Ms Hennessy said. “As these designs show, navigating this intersection will be made easier with traffic lights, lanes, and more accessible shared paths constructed as part of this project. “Traffic often banks up at this intersection, creating congestion and delays for drivers, which is why we’re getting on with the job of improving traffic flow.”

Wyndham council has signed three climate change advocacy campaigns. As the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) continued in Glasgow last week, the council signed the Better Futures Declaration and joined the Cities Race to Zero and Race to Resilience campaigns. Film wins at festival A film starring three young pupils from Al-Taqwa College in Truganina has received a prize at a prestigious festival. Optism: A Tale of Unbreakable Friendship has been announced as winner of the Judge’s Choice School Documentary at the annual Focus on Ability Short Film Festival, which encourages entrants tell stories of people with a disability. Ms Obayda Kannouj and Mr Pongky Nataatmaja, who compromise Al-Taqwa’s media department, focused on crafting a heartfelt story about grade three boys in the film. The doco focuses on the friendship between Anthony, Arvin and Noor Dean, who help each other with autism and the challenges they face. “The boys involved and their families along with their teachers, Mr Trish and Ms

Kass, were so pleased with the results,” Mr Nataatmaja said. “The story of the three boys had many in tears, it’s emotional on every level because ultimately, we all just want to be accepted for who we are and the video just captures that.” Mr Nataatmaja said it was a “great achievement” for the college’s film to be selected as a winner at the festival, out of schools from across Australia and New Zealand that entered the event. “We’d like to thank the stars in the video and their supportive families, and also to Nova Employment who have been running the film festival for 12 years to raise awareness of people with disabilities around the globe,” Mr Nataatmaja said. The school has received multiple prizes at the festival in previous years, for other films.

The state government is helping to make rental properties safer and healthier by supporting upgrades to inefficient heating and cooling systems. Rental properties are now eligible for a $1000 rebate to replace old inefficient wood and gas heaters. To be eligible for the rebate, the rental property must be earning $500 or less in weekly rent; occupied by renters holding a valid concession card or with a combined household income below $90,000; or unoccupied with a potential to earn $500 or less in weekly rent. Increased animal cruelty reports By Alesha Capone RSPCA Victoria has received 348 reports about animal welfare issues in Wyndham across 12 months. This placed Wyndham at fourth-highest in the state for the number of reports received per municipality by the charity, for the 2020-21 financial year. Greater Geelong placed first on the list with 640 reports, followed by Casey (577 reports) and Hume (386 reports). Across the state, RSPCA Victoria’s Inspectorate responded to 10,745 cruelty reports, with complaints about deliberate cruelty rising 13 per cent compared to the

2019-20 financial year. Chief inspector Michael Stagg said the correlation between COVID-19 lockdowns and an increase in reports of animal cruelty was “a really concerning trend”. “COVID has created a significant amount of pressure on people,” he said. “When there is financial stress, mental health or drug and alcohol issues, animal cruelty and neglect tends to increase. “It is also possible that reports have increased due to people being at home for longer periods.” Out of the 348 reports lodged about animals in Wyndham, 128 related to husbandry issues such as grooming, poor hygiene or living conditions.

Eighty-six reports were about sick or injured animals getting insufficient treatment, with 79 reports about underweight animals. Sixty-nine reports were about animals with insufficient shelter and 59 about animals with insufficient water provided for them. Fifty-seven reports were about beaten, wounded, abused, tormented or terrified animals. Fifty reports related to animals with insufficient food and 30 to abandoned animals. More than 220 of the Wyndham reports were about dogs, 61 reports were about cats and 22 related to birds. Fourteen reports involved puppies, another 14 mentioned kittens, 13 involved fowl, 12

related to rabbits and 10 concerned horses. RSPCA Victoria Inspectorate veterinarian, Dr Rebecca Belousoff, said the neglect of animals far outweighed other forms of cruelty reported across the state. “The high number of cruelty reports involving animal neglect is sad and frustrating given how preventable most are,” Dr Belousoff said. “What people don’t realise is that lifelong medical and behavioural problems can result from starvation or not getting vet treatment in time.” Report animal welfare concerns to RSPCA Victoria at www.rspcavic.org/report or by calling 9224 2222.

Old Geelong Road crossing to be gone for good The level crossing on Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing will be gone for good on Thursday, December 9. Major construction is now under way to open the new 220-metre road bridge within the next few weeks. The bridge includes nearly 1000 metres of on and off-ramps and has a surface area of nearly 40,000 square meters. More than 95 per cent of 16,000 tonnes of asphalt has already been laid. Traders on Old Geelong Road are also calling on the community to keep supporting them through the final stages of construction works, and when the road closure takes place to allow works to occur. A turning circle will be created between the shopping village and the train station car park, to allow drivers to access local businesses

smoothly. People travelling on foot or by bike will be able to continue to cross over the rail line at the level crossing site until a new pedestrian and cyclist overpass opens in 2022. Works will also soon get under way on the development of improved community spaces and new landscaped areas near the level crossing removal, as well as a new pedestrian overpass for safer access to Hoppers Crossing station. The Heaths Road and Morris Road intersection will also be upgraded, with optimised traffic light phasing introduced to make traffic flow more efficient. It will see traffic lights installed at two brand new intersections on either side of the road bridge, including a new intersection linked with on and off ramps to the Princes Freeway.

In 2018, the state government promised this dangerous and congested level crossing would be removed by 2025. The project has been fast-tracked and will now be completed four years ahead of schedule. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said: “Hoppers Crossing is a great community, and we’re about to make it even better by getting rid of this level crossing – taking away the lottery of waiting at the boom gates to make travel time more reliable. “This road bridge will slash congestion – and create a direct link between Old Geelong Road and the Princes Highway.” Traders on Old Geelong Road hope the community keeps supporting them through the final stages of works. 257000 (Supplied)

Rare illness spurs walk By Alesha Capone Travis McCarty is planning to walk 100 kilometres next month to raise funds for a Wyndham family whose three young sons have been diagnosed with an incurable illness. Point Cook’s Rebekah (Bekk) and Nick Woronka are parents to twins Riley and Cooper, plus younger sibling Logan, who all have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). The rare and progressive muscle-wasting condition means it is likely the boys, who sometimes use mobility scooters, will likely require wheelchairs before their 12th birthdays. Mr McCarty, who lives in Wandong, said he heard about the family when they featured on the news. “I am a father of four beautiful daughters,” he said. “As a parent, you feel helpless at times when your children are sick or unwell. “This is every parent’s worst nightmare.” Inspired to help out, Mr McCarty – who has completed many walking challenges for different charities – set up a charity called Walk For Woronka Boys. In December last year, he walked 100 kilometres from Craigieburn to Point Cook, raising $13,000 for the Woronkas in the process. Mr McCarty is planning another marathon 24-hour trek on December 4 along The Great Victorian Rail Trail starting in Tallarook. This year, he hopes to raise $15,000 so Nick and Bekk can purchase a plunge pool to help Logan, Riley and Cooper continue their water therapy, which helps reduce stress on their muscles and joints. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, the family sometimes could not access a pool to conduct the therapy. Mr McCarty said last year’s walk was “an

amazing experience”. “The look on Bekk and Nick’s faces when I was able to present them a big cheque when I crossed the finishing line is a moment I’ll cherish forever,” he said. Mr McCarty said training for this year’s walk has been challenging because of the restrictions.

Funds request Wyndham council will ask the state government for $7.5 million in funding to construct two new community centres and other facilities to serve the area’s growing population. The council will request the money from the 2021-22 Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF), a state government program that supports the development of infrastructure in 16 rapidly-growing Victorian municipalities. The upcoming round of the GSF has a funding pool of $50 million to share between all the councils. Wyndham council will seek $4 million to put towards the future Truganina Community Centre and $1.3 million for the planned Black Forest Road South Community Centre in Werribee. The council will also ask for $1 million to help pay for construction of a $7.8 million family centre in Manor Lakes. The council will request $600,000 apiece for new consulting suites and waiting rooms for new kindergarten sites proposed for Tarneit North and West Werribee. Wyndham council is hoping to commence construction on all five of these projects during 2022. Speaking at a council meeting last month, Cr Josh Gilligan said the projects were “shovel-ready”. Since the GSF commenced in 2015–16, the council has received more than $32 million to contribute to 22 individual projects. This has included $3 million for the Wyndham Cultural Centre redevelopment project and $1.5 million for the Lawrie Emmins Reserve Youth & Skate Facility.

Council ‘freezing’ staff plans By Alesha Capone Wyndham council is planning to hire no more than two new permanent, full-time staff during the next four financial years, according to its long term financial plan. The document, released last week, covers a period from 2021-22 to 2030-31. Part of the plan – which will be reviewed every year – shows the council will have 990 permanent, full-time staff in the 2021-22 financial year. This will rise to 991 staff within two years and then 992 staff in 2024-25, before hitting

1013 staff members the following year. The council plans to have a total of 1097 permanent, full-time staff by 2030-31. Council spending on permanent, full-time staff is expected to increase from $128.85 million to $210.11 million across the decade. The total number of staff, including part-time and casual roles, will also rise from 1511 employees in 2021-22 to 1736 workers across the 10 years. Speaking at a public meeting last week, Cr Josh Gilligan said that the council was “essentially freezing, over time, the number of full-time staff that are in this organisation”

until 2025-26. The financial plan also said that due to population growth, “the demand for capital to build the new infrastructure needed by growing communities in Wyndham is currently greater than what council can afford”. “Based on current levels of expenditure the asset renewal gap could be $1 billion by 2045,” the document said. Cr Gilligan said the council would have to have a high-level of discipline “if we want to shift towards making sure that we’re dealing with the infrastructure gap in our

organisation”. A council spokesperson said: “As with all expenses, we aim to minimise growth in staff costs wherever possible, however staffing numbers may increase over time in some areas to meet service demands – for example, to staff new community centres or kindergartens. “The financial plan provides a forward looking forecast covering a period of 10 years. “As such, it is based on a set of assumptions including our population growth, service and infrastructure needs as well as an outlook on key economic indicators including inflation and interest rates.”

Williams Landing commercial hub set to grow The Williams Landing commercial hub is set to expand, with developer Cedar Woods announcing the release of a new seven-storey office building, Boston Commons. Located at 89 Overton Road, Boston Commons will be the fifth standalone office building in the growing town centre. The building comprises 60 strata office suites, measuring from 48 square metres in size to two larger pre-lease office suites and five ground-floor retail suites. According to Cedar Woods chief operating officer Patrick Archer, the pre-launch campaign generated high levels of market interest with more than 30 per cent sold of the space in the first weeks. “We have found purchasers are highly motivated right now and are largely driven by the growing popularity of Williams Landing as the centre of Melbourne’s west,” he said. “The city of Wyndham has four times more

VU, AFL partner for new study Tara Murray The AFL is joining forces with Victoria University in a landmark study to improve the mental health and wellbeing of female athletes. The Commonwealth-funded national study will look into factors that impact mental health and wellbeing of women athletes. Researchers from Victoria University’s Institute for Health and Sport are commencing a comprehensive study to assess and track the mental health and wellbeing of Australian women athletes in semi-professional and

professional sports. Evaluating the mental health and wellbeing of professional and semi-professional women athletes is a critical step to inform the future development of the systems, policies and programs needed to support mental health needs and promote wellbeing. With more women’s sports seeing their players turn professional, the need for programs and policies is growing. Lead investigator, professor Alex Parker, said an examination of gender-specific stressors is necessary to address and improve the wellbeing

of women athletes. “The level of interest in this area is growing but there is still insufficient information available about the specific factors that impact the health and mental wellbeing of Australian women athletes,” he said. AFL head of mental health and wellbeing, Dr Kate Hall, said the AFL shares VU’s commitment to growing the evidence base about the gender-specific needs of female athletes. As part of the study, players from the AFLW competition and other sporting competitions

will participate in a number of surveys and interviews to track their mental health and wellbeing. Cross-sport and community norm comparisons will enable the identification of key areas of strength and concern as part of the study. The information gathered will provide participating sports with valuable data to inform mental health strategies, policy improvements or service development models to improve the mental health and wellbeing of women athletes.

Striding to raise funds for the Stroke Foundation Werribee’s Amanda Sidnell is encouraging Wyndham residents to take part in the Stride4Stroke campaign this month. The Stroke Foundation fundraiser will run until the end of November. Stride4Stroke asks participants to set a physical activity goal and complete it in return for donations. Ms Sidnell said this year would mark her third time taking part in Stride4Stroke. Her activity target is to walk for a total of 1080 minutes this month. Ms Sidnell said that she enjoys walking along Werribee River, often with her daughters Bella and Alexis, as she works towards meeting this goal. Ms Sidnell she was dedicating her participation in this year’s Stride4Stroke to two people she knows who suffered a stroke, including her former partner’s grandmother Robina. Ms Sidnell described Robina as “the most

beautiful, loving lady and we miss her every day”. The second person her Stride4Stroke efforts are dedicated to is her friend Stewart Greig, who was only 40 when he suffered an ischemic stroke. “Thankfully he recognised the signs, acted fast and was super lucky not to have any ongoing deficits,” Ms Sidnell said. A spook-tacular effort A Williams Landing family has raised $7137.04 for The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal after hosting a spook-tacular Halloween display and activities last month. Natalie and Max Mitchell, along with their sons Maxwell, Roman and Harvey live at a property known as the suburb’s “Halloween House”. In the 73 days leading up to Halloween, they arranged a skeleton nicknamed Anna into different displays in their front yard. On October 31, they accepted donations from residents who came past to see their Halloween decorations during a five-hour event. Ms Mitchell said they also had cookies for sale which we were donated by Janine from Cue Thy Cakes and a raffle to win an Anna Skeleton ornament, crafted and donated by Gavin from The Rusty Tinker. Simona’s dinosaur adventures By Alesha Capone Hoppers Crossing teacher Simona Grippi says she was thrilled to discover an ancient dinosaur skull on the Victorian coast last year. Miss Grippi, who has a diploma of education and an honours degree in zoology, lives in Hobsons Bay. In addition to teaching at Baden Powell College, she is a volunteer prospector with the Melbourne Museum – someone who goes looking for dinosaur bones in the wild and extracts them from the land. Miss Grippi has found dinosaur fossils, bones and footprints in the Inverloch and Otways areas, although their exact locations remain confidential after some of the footprints were vandalised. In between lockdowns last year, Miss Grippi went prospecting in the San Remo region along with two other volunteers, looking for fossils among cretaceous rock at the beach. “I stepped on a big rock and just saw something that looks unusual,” she said. “I realised that embedded in a big, big rock was more than just a little bone. “I found a skull, it’s as big as two watermelons put together.” The volunteers asked the Melbourne Museum for permission to extract the bone. They spent six hours cutting and chipping away at the rock, and were delighted to find a complete skull and jaw. The skull, which is now at the museum, is from the remains of a Koolasuchus dinosaur. Miss Grippi said the Koolasuchus was only found in Victoria and lived in the state 120 million years ago. “It was a giant amphibian, a bit like a huge crocodile or axolotl with a head like a salamander,” she said. extracting the skull can be seen on her website, which she created to educate people about dinosaurs, and includes interactive games. Miss Grippi said she wanted to teach children that dinosaurs used to live in Australia, not just overseas. Miss Grippi said she wanted to inspire young people to look for dinosaur fossils in the outdoors after lockdown.

“I think my favourite aspect is that kind of magic, that thrill when you find that bone and to be the first one to see it in millions of years,” she said. During lockdown, Miss Grippi started writing a series of “educational and fun” children’s books about dinosaurs, with her 21-year-old niece in Italy providing the illustrations.

The books include two main characters who go on a series of dinosaur-related adventures. A picture book has already been published and another three books have been written, including one titled DinosOz Adventures Book 1: The Tunnel, which will be released this week. A comic idea, turned into reality Shaun Keenan is a self-confessed comic book nerd — and he wears that like a badge of honour. But Shaun doesn’t just read comics, he produces them too as he explained to Oliver Lees.

ince starting his own company COMICS2MOVIES in 2007, Shaun’s work has evolved from designing sketches based on movie posters, to creating his own anthology that is currently the number one selling independent comic in Australia. Next year, the Gisborne resident will release a graphic novel adaptation made to accompany the Occupation film franchise, a trilogy of sci-fi films available to viewers on Netflix around the world. “Everytime I talk about it, I can’t help but smile,” he said. “The comic book industry in Australia is not very easy to navigate. I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way. That’s why I’m really proud of COMICS2MOVIES. “To have reached this point, and to have these things next to my name, it feels like we’re starting to reach that next echelon.” Growing up in Melbourne’s north in the 1980s, Shaun feasted on the classic comic books of Jim Lee from an early age. “I always struggled to read, and I think it was my Mum who first gave me a comic book. I would have been about seven,” he said. “I think being a teenage boy who was into comics, but who also wanted to fit in with the cool kids, I kind of ventured away from it a little bit. “It wasn’t until I was in my late 20s and early 30s that I made a change. “I was working as a store manager at Optus. My wife came up to me and asked what I wanted to do with my life. I remember being a little taken aback. “So I thought about it, and I came to the realisation that I’d kind of just plodded through life and got roles that came to me. “And so I started to think about what I really enjoyed. I have always been a massive movie fan, and so that’s where I came up with the idea of COMICS2MOVIES.” With the backing of his family, Shaun started attending regular comic book conventions.

“I was very, very naive,” he said. “It was a pretty barren landscape, but that was exciting because it felt like there was a gap in the market.” As Shaun describes it, the first challenge became learning the ins and outs of what goes into writing a comic book. For example, unlike a novel, which is written with minute detail, comics are shorter in length and captured through individual frames. Another speed bump in Shaun’s grand plan was that he was not a confident drawer. “I can’t draw to save my life, so I usually do the writing,” he said. “Now I have several different artists working and I discovered I had a knack of picking up good talent.” Shaun found the best path forward was to take his knowledge and management skills to seek out talent that could bring his ideas to life. And as he started to build his business from the base up, graphic novels themselves started to enjoy a spike in popularity. Popular sci-fi, fantasy and action film

producers started to employ graphic novelists to bring script ideas to life. Films such as 300 and The Umbrella Academy were all investing in comics to accompany their releases. Shaun said the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter became a new space for creatives to gain financial backing. Earlier this year, Hollywood star Keanue Reeves launched his own comic series BRZRKR on the platform, and it has since become the most pledged item in the site’s history, with over $1.4 million earned in donations. “Since 2017, the graphic novel industry has increased year-on-year faster than any other printed material,” he said. “You used to only be able to get graphic novels in comic book stores, but now you can get them anywhere. That misconception of it [comics] being just for kids has also been broken.” Therein lies the next exciting challenge for Shaun, as he describes it. Following the success of his original anthology The Xtreme Champion Tournament,

Shaun is now in a position where he can employ Australian artists to get the job done. With the work starting to pile up, Shaun said he’s eager to make his publishing company an avenue for fellow comic book enthusiasts, one that didn’t exist when he was finding his own way in the industry. “I’d really love to do more of that mentoring side,” he said. “There is no clear pathway at the moment, and a lot of talent ends up going overseas. The idea is to be able to retain that talent, and I’ve always prided myself on making sure my artists are paid for their work. “There’s that misconception that when you talk about comics you’re only talking about superheroes. “But what people don’t realise is that comics and graphic novels can be just as diverse as people are from one another.” COMICS2MOVIES’ Occupation graphic novel series is expected in March next year. MY PLACE Eddie Marriott is one of the longest serving volunteers at Werribee Football Club and Werribee Cricket Club. He chats with Alesha Capone. How did you become involved with the cricket and football clubs? I came from Bendigo originally. I left when I was 17, in 1963, to work for the Public Trustees, which is now the State Trustees. I worked there for 40 years and in those days we retired at 55. I used to live in a couple of Melbourne addresses and in 1969, I used to get the train to come home to Werribee. I was walking home past the state school in Pyke Street and I saw a group of people playing cricket. I started talking to them, because I had played football and cricket before including in Golden Square, and I came back the next week. Most of the men were involved in the football club too, so I became involved with that the next year. You have been involved in most aspects of the clubs? In 1970, I played with Werribee Football Club in my first year. In that first year, I was the player’s representative on the committee and used to organise all sorts of things. In 1975 I finished as a player and became a selector. I have held most of the positions on the committee and fundraising committee, which organised annual fundraising events like raffles and discos. We would charge people $12 to get in. I used to sell raffle tickets at the Racecourse Hotel, The Bridge Hotel and The Little River Hotel. I still do those kinds of things now. I was made a life member in 1980, then joined the Hall of Fame and then became a Legend. There are only nine legends, so that was pretty exciting. In 1990, I started as a coach’s assistant for eight or 10 years. I also spent some time doing stats, I would sit up in the stands and move the numbers on the board, and all that. As a selector, I would be in the coach’s box and run messages on a walkie-talkie. I also helped set up the Chirnside Cup Coterie Group, with members of sponsors and business owners. We have lunches and raise money for the club, they donate prizes for raffles and events. And with the past players’ group, which is still running

now, we would have days out where we would get 100 people or more. With the Werribee Cricket Club … I was made a life member in 1981. I have been president, vice-president, secretary, everything like that. You’re involved with other local organisations too? I am a trustee of the Werribee Racecourse and Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, that has been for over 20 years now. I used to be a board member of the Werribee Plaza Bingo Centre. The football club would run events at Centenary Hall with bingo in the supper-room, it got to 100 people and became too big, so it moved to the Plaza.I

was also a delegate for the Red Cross. What do enjoy most about your involvement with the football and cricket clubs? I love being there, I just loved sport. I played basketball too, table tennis at Albert Park and a bit of tennis. I just loved being involved. Werribee Football Club and the Werribee Cricket Club use the same ground, the alignment is terrific. It is a fantastic arrangement, and both clubs do very well out of it. Wyndham council does a great job for both clubs and maintaining the grounds down there. Has Werribee changed a lot across the years? When I first came to Werribee, there were

only 8000 or 10,000 people, when you went down the street everyone knew everyone. If I went out, I wouldn’t get home for four hours because everyone would stop to say hello. It’s not really like that now, unless I go to the pub or the footy club. And you also found the love of your life in Werribee? I married a local girl, Sheryl, in 1976. We have a daughter, Rebecca, she married our son-in-law Brad. Our grandchildren are Harvey, 12, and Ella, seven. I get great enjoyment out of watching them play sport, Harvey is very much into sport. Ella is a good swimmer and gymnast too.

Call of the wild as zoo reopens The gates to Werribee Open Range Zoo have reopened to the public, with lots of new animals and spaces to explore. The zoo’s upgraded hippopotamus viewing deck now allows even better access to the sweeping panoramic and close-up views of the threatened species’ expansive habitat. Children are also able to participate in water play activity nearby at Hippo Beach on days where temperatures reach 24C. Meantime, the zoo’s Savannah is brimming with energy following the arrival of a baby zebra foal and two Scimitar-horned oryx calves during the past two months. Werribee Open Range Zoo director Glen Holland said it is a fantastic time to welcome people back to the zoo. “It’s wonderful to see all the smiling faces and people enjoying the Zoo again as they reconnect with the animals,” Mr Holland said. “The zoo is absolutely picturesque, with the flowers blooming and spacious lawns looking lusciously green. ‘Battle of the Bridge’ as United kicks off season Western United will return to GMHBA Stadium in Geelong to kick off the 2021-22 A-League season on Saturday, November 20. Western United will play against Melbourne Victory in a game dubbed the ‘Battle of the Bridge’, starting at 7.45pm. Fans from the Green and Black army are now able to book tickets to watch John Aloisi’s first competitive match in charge of the team. Western United’s latest signings, including internationals Leo Lacroix, Aleksandar Prijovic and Rene Krhin, and Australian stars Neil Kilkenny, Ben Garuccio, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Dylan Wenzel Halls, are set to star in the game. New coaches appointed By Alesha Capone The Wyndham Basketball Association (WBA) has welcomed two new coaching appointments for the Victoria University Wyndham senior program. Lucas Allen has been named as the Victoria University Big V Championship men’s head coach and Aaron Benstead as the Victoria University Big V Youth League men’s head coach. WBA player and coach development manager Gerard Hillier said Allen was a “huge addition” to the program given his experience of working with elite juniors via the Basketball Victoria Country pathway. Allen is also technical assistant coach for the South East Melbourne Phoenix in the NBL. Hillier said Benstead – who started out his career basketball playing with Wyndham as a youngster – was coming back to the WBA after spending four years with the Melbourne Tigers, where he worked extensively with their under-18s to Youth League programs and served as an assistant coach under Andrew Gaze and others. Allen said that after an “incredibly disrupted” past two years in the sport due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, he was

looking forward to getting back on the court. He said that at Wyndham, he was also looking forward to leading a basketball program, as opposed to assisting in one, and meeting new faces and athletes. Allen has previously been a guest coach at WBA tryouts and camps, while his fiance also played for the association last year. “The thing that always stuck out to me, even as a guest coach, was how professional and how progressive they are, and want to be,” he said. Allen said that the WBA was keen to recruit, recognise and retain local basketball talent from Wyndham. “The primary focus for us has been, and will continue to be, building the team to be representative of the Wyndham community,” he said. “The Wyndham locality has so much talent but for some reason or another a lot has left in the past.” Allen’s new colleague Benstead said he played with the WBA, back when it was still named Werribee, as a team member in the under-12s through to the under-18s. Benstead said that in returning to the WBA, there were a lot of familiar faces at the club. He said that it has been “very humbling” to be welcomed back to Wyndham.

“I saw it, for me, as a good chance to return home so to speak, being a Werribee boy from day dot,” Benstead said of his return. “I started my junior representative coaching there as well and it just made sense to come back.” Benstead said that after being able to work with “really good coaches” at the Melbourne Tigers across the past few years, he wanted to use his skills and experience in growing and retaining youth basketball players for the WBA’s benefit. “We definitely want Wyndham to be the association of choice in Melbourne’s west,” he said. Benstead said he did not want to sound classist but that he hoped to build WBA’s young players up to have the “hard-nosed, blue-collared workmanship mentality” of the western suburbs when it comes to playing the game. “We want to build the program up to have a really solid set of values and discipline in there going forward,” he said. The WBA has also welcomed back Hillier as the Victoria University Big V Championship women’s head coach, along with Corey Michailidis as the Victoria University Youth League women’s head coach. Winger Christian Theoharous’ immediate impact since joining Western United training has seen him earn a two-year scholarship contract. The 21-year-old returns to the A-League after spending three seasons in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach II. Theoharous has trained with United the past month. “It’s an honour to play for such an ambitious club and the camaraderie around the group is special,” he said. “You can see everyone involved in the club is motivated and wants to win, which is very infectious. I can’t wait to be playing in front of the fans this season.” Theoharous made his debut in the A-League as an 18-year-old with Melbourne Victory. He played a significant part in Victory’s 2017-18 championship and he also played six games in the Asian Champions League. United head coach John Aloisi has been impressed by Theoharous’ impact in training as well as his mix of experience, talent and hunger to improve. “Christian has been absolutely first-class since he came in and has really made a big impression on the rest of the group,” he said. “With everything he’s picked up in Germany and the experience he already has in this league, he will be a really valuable addition to our side. “He can play on the wing or through the middle for us. He’s really skilled on the ball, works incredibly hard and is eager to keep improving. We can’t wait to keep seeing him grow in our shirt and contribute on the pitch this season.” Meanwhile, United will be in action next week in the first round of the national stage of the FFA Cup. A-League teams will be playing their first match of the tournament. United will face Newcastle Jets on Saturday night at GMHBA Stadium at 7pm.
