Students celebrate 100 days Prep pupils at Woodville Primary School in Hoppers Crossing have celebrated their 100 days of school milestone. Although most of the pupils missed attending the 100th day at school due to the statewide COVID-19 lockdown earlier this year, Woodville staff and teachers organised a special celebration on Monday instead. The youngsters participated in a range of activities in their classrooms and the prep teachers hosted a free breakfast for all pupils. Car parking investigation By Alesha Capone Wyndham council will investigate reports that a paid car park, which is operating in a Hoppers Crossing industrial estate without municipal authorisation, has been issuing motorists with notices of up to $77 for non-payment of parking fees. Cr Josh Gilligan, who raised the matter at a council meeting last week, said the paid car park was operating at 75-85 Elm Park Drive. Cr Gilligan said the council has not provided planning authority for the site to be used as a commercial car park.
But he said that the operators of the car park were charging fees of up to $5.50 per day for parking. Cr Gilligan’s notice of motion stated that some drivers who received the $77 non-compliance notifications incorrectly believed they were legally required to pay the fee. However, a spokesperson for the owners’ corporation which operates the Elm Park Drive car park, said the gated complex was owned by 21 factories. He said there were 75 spaces in the park, which provided “plenty of room” if everyone stuck with their allocated parking spots.
However, the spokesperson said that recently, workers from surrounding properties had started using many of the vehicle spaces, due to a lack of on-street parking in Elm Park Drive. He said the owners’ corporation had decided that paid parking “was the most practical option and safest option” to control the situation. The spokesperson said they allowed people to park for up to 90 minutes, free-of-charge. He said money raised from the car park went back to the owners’ corporation for general use and maintenance of the car park, and that businesses could use the funds to compensate workers who paid for parking.
The spokesperson said the owners’ corporation had hired a national parking operator to manage the car park, which issued the non-compliance notices. Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) manufacturing organiser Darren Connelly said parking spaces near Elm Park Drive were quickly taken up every day. He said some workers, who did not start until 7am, were turning up as early as 4am or 5am to get a free park near their workplace, as many felt unsafe walking to work from further away.

Off-leash areas boosted Wyndham council is taking the lead to address a shortage of dog off-leash areas caused by the municipality’s booming population, launching a $2.30 million draft plan to build 11 new and upgraded off-lead facilities. More than 4880 residents provided the council with feedback while the draft plan, which was released last week, was developed. Across the next five years, the council hopes to build new off-leash areas at Camelot Reserve in Tarneit and at the Truganina Active Space Reserve. In the 2022-23 financial year, two new off-leash facilities are planned for Eureka Drive, Manor Lakes and Cambridge Reserve, Hoppers Crossing, each for $316,720. Funding of $279,270 will go towards building an off-leash area at the Williams Landing Reserve. The suburb does not presently have a dog off-lead site. A petition of 350 signatures requesting an off-leash facility for Williams Landing was lodged with the council during the draft plan’s consultation process. Williams Landing husband and wife Paul and Laura, who own five-month-old cavoodle Marlo, told Star Weekly they would love an off-leash location in their suburb. The draft plan also proposes relocating the existing off-leash area at Saltwater Reserve, Point Cook to the other side of the reserve and increasing its size to 6000 square metres, during the 2023-24 financial year. The Presidents Park off-leash area will be extended that same year. Between 2024-26, new off-leash facilities will be built in Mambourin, Wyndham Vale and Tarneit. The state government has provided $275,000 for a new off-leash facility in Bulban Road. There are presently 18 dog off-leash areas

in Wyndham and more than 21,000 dogs registered with the council. A council report said there was an “inequity in provision and access to all types of facilities” when mapping the dog off-leash areas across Wyndham, particularly within Tarneit, Manor Lakes and Mambourin. Cr Susan McIntyre said that Point Cook has
4607 registered dogs, the second-highest rate of canine ownership in Wyndham, and needed an additional nine dog off-leash areas to meet demand. The Draft Dog-Off Leash Approach plan will be open for public feedback until November 23. Details: https://theloop.wyndham.vic.gov. au/

Rehabilitation tender decided A $5.01 million contract to rehabilitate a section of Sneydes Road in Point Cook has been awarded by Wyndham council. The project will involve the rehabilitation of the road pavement along Sneydes Road between Hacketts Road and Lennon Boulevard. The council last week announced Bild Infrastructure as the successful tenderer for the 16-week construction project, which is due to start this month and end in February, 2022. The council will send letters to nearby residents and businesses to inform them of the construction. Earlier this year, the state government announced $15.2 million to upgrade the intersection of Point Cook and Sneydes roads. About 32,000 vehicles travel on Point Cook Road each day, while Sneydes Road is used by about 11,000 vehicles daily. Construction is expected to start at the intersection during mid-2022, with completion scheduled for mid-2023. Prior to construction starting, the Department of Transport has implemented “a temporary solution to assist in managing congestion and safety at the intersection”. Signage for an “advisory P turn” is located on Sneydes Road just before the approach to Point Cook Road, to give drivers the option to make a left turn from Sneydes Road into Point Cook Road and perform a U-turn at the Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard roundabout, then head back along Point Cook southbound.

Bookmarking a winner Tarneit youngster Aaliya has been named one of two winners in a Wyndham Libraries competition to design a bookmark. The bookmarks designed by Aaliya and another local girl, Zahra, will be printed and made available at Wyndham council libraries towards the end of the year. Aaliya, aged six, is in prep at Tarneit Rise Primary School. Her proud mother Zinnerah said their family moved from Sydney to Tarneit three years ago, and that Aaliya loves being part of the Wyndham community. “She finds it so much more inclusive, multicultural and friendly,” Zinnerah said. “She absolutely loves every indoor and outdoor activity that Wyndham has to offer.” Zinnerah said Aaliya felt “very happy and excited” to be named as a winner of the
libraries’ competition. “She can’t wait to share the bookmark with her friends, teachers and the community,” Zinnerah said. The bookmark Aaliya designed “was about old world, new world and other world“ with knights and castles featured. For the new world section of the bookmark, Aaliya drew herself as an astronaut in space. Aaliya said that drawing, colouring and painting are among her favourite hobbies. Missed bin collections double The number of kerbside bin collections missed in Wyndham has more than doubled across 12 months. The council’s annual report, released last week, showed that for every 10,000 garbage and recycling bin collections scheduled in Wyndham in 2020-21, 9.86 per cent were missed. This compares to 4.49 per cent of collections being missed in 2019-20 The report said the number of missed collections increased due to a new kerbside waste collection services contract that the council awarded to Cleanaway Pty Ltd in December last year.
“This can be contributed to new routes, change to collection times and driver errors,” the document said. The report also said there had been multiple service requests from residents for missed and damaged bins. The council’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe, said that it took “several collection cycles for Cleanaway to train their staff and refine their routes to collect bins on time”. “The new contractor also had new trucks,” Mr Thorpe said. “During the initial few months of the contract, it was found that the lifting
mechanism on the trucks needed adjustment. “Once these adjustments were made, the number of damaged bins decreased significantly.” Mr Thorpe said that since, January, there has been a 75 per cent decrease in the number of missed bins. “More than 99 per cent of bins are collected on time and we are working hard to get that as close to 100 per cent as possible,” he said. “We continue to work with our contractors to ensure bins are collected on time and damage to bins is avoided.” A Cleanaway spokesperson said their kerbside waste collection services in
Wyndham “are running well following the resolution of some initial issues”. Under Cleanaway’s 10-year contract with the council, the company services around 100,000 residences in the municipality. “Cleanaway invested about $10 million in more than 25 new trucks, and created more than 40 jobs, many of them for Wyndham residents, to provide these services,” the spokesperson said. “We have also supported Wyndham city council with education resources to improve recycling and reduce contamination of recycling and green waste bins, thereby reducing waste send to landfill.”
Aanchal’s charity ride Tarneit teenager Aanchal Sharma is participating in the Great Cycle Challenge of Australia (GCCA) to raise funds for children fighting cancer. The annual event asks participants to raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute, which is working on finding a cure for childhood cancer. Aanchal, 16, said she was also taking part in the GCCA because of her grandfather K.D. Sharma, who died of lung cancer when she was younger. “He also loved to donate money and I feel like it’s a special moment to reconnect with my beloved grandfather as I ride in memory of him,” she said. Aanchal said she had set herself the goal of raising $500 for the GCCA but that she felt “delighted and elated” to have surpassed this, raising a total of $760.
Aanchal cycled 103 kilometres last month, receiving a Great Cycling Australia jersey for her efforts, and will also receive a medal. “I love to fundraise and volunteer for charities, and I also participated in the National Mental Health Walk for October,” Aanchal said. A student at Suzanne Cory High School, Aanchal has also helped to raise funds the for Leukaemia Foundation and World Vision Australia’s 40 hour Famine. “I would highly encourage people to participate in fundraising events for many different causes – like the National Mental Health Walk, Walking Stars by Cancer Council Victoria, because we can all make a difference, and we should start together as a community of Wyndham,” she said. Leisure centres reopen AquaPulse and Eagle Stadium are set to reopen to the public this week as the state comes out of lockdown. WynActive has also announced that the Werribee Outdoor Pool will reopen on Friday, November 12, following the completion of a $1.5 million upgrade. As of today (Wednesday, November 3), the AquaPulse gym, group fitness, pools and waterslides will reopen. However, the sauna and steam room will remain closed. The Eagle Stadium health club, along with indoor and outdoor courts, will reopen and return to normal opening hours . To enter WynActive facilities, all patrons aged 16 and over will need to show proof of double COVID-19 vaccination. Those with a vaccine medical exemption must bring proof of their exemption, signed by a medical practitioner, plus a photo ID. Everyone 12 years and over must wear a fitted face mask when attending WynActive facilities, unless a lawful exemption applies. Patrons will not need to wear a face mask when exercising, if they are out of breath or puffing. Both AquaPulse and Eagle Stadium received Fitness Australia’s Quality Accredited Business of the Year award last month. The national award recognises the Australian business that achieves the greatest accreditation score for facility safety and standards, assessed by the Improvement Foundation and endorsed by the Fitness Industry Standards Council and the Fitness Australia Board. Have a say on bridge names Members of the public are being urged to vote on the names of new bridges which have been built in Wyndham for the Regional Rail Link Project. VicTrack’s Bridge Naming Competition is giving residents the chance to have their say on shortlisted names for the road bridges over the Geelong Line at Ballan Road and Derrimut Road. The shortlisted names, which were nominated by the public, were required to commemorate a local community member or event. The five shortlisted names for the Ballan Road bridge are Dulcie Shanahan Bridge, George Scolaro Bridge, John Nolan Bridge, Mervyn Smith Bridge and Vic Mayall Bridge. The three shortlisted names for the Derrimut Road bridge are Nino Arrigo Bridge, Tom Beasley Bridge and Carter Bridge. The bridge at Leakes Road received one eligible nomination and will become known as Baden Powell Bridge. Aggressive dog complaints rise By Alesha Capone The number of requests lodged with Wyndham council about “nuisance aggressive” dogs has steadily increased across the past three years. A reviewed version of the council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) for 2021-2025, which was released last week, said Wyndham residents lodged 171 requests about “nuisance aggressive” dogs during the 2020-21 financial year. In comparison, the council received 108 such requests in 2018 and 143 requests in the
2019-20 financial year. The DAMP, which is reviewed annually, outlines the council’s plans for animal management relating to cats and dogs and aims to promote responsible pet ownership. Cr Susan McIntyre said key themes in the DAMP, identified through community consultation, included the need for increased animal ranger visibility; continued education of people who let dogs off the leash in non-authorised areas; and the importance of having cats confined to owner’s properties. The council received 3645 animal control
service requests in the last financial year. The DAMP also said that 11 dangerous dogs, 18 menacing dogs and five restricted breed dogs are registered as living within the Wyndham municipality. The DAMP said that the owners of dangerous, menacing and restricted breed dogs in Wyndham recorded a “very high” level of compliance with legal regulations in the year to July. “This category of dogs will continue to be monitored with regular and random inspections,” the plan said.
The council regularly audits industrial and residential areas for non-declared guard dogs. On the matter of cats, the DAMP said that in 2020-21, council officers impounded 1307 cats in Wyndham, with just 6.5 per cent reunited with their owners. Cubby house project brings VCAL students joy Tarneit Senior College VCAL students have constructed eight cubby houses, two of which they will donate to local kindergartens. School staff members have purchased the other cubbies for their children. Two students involved in the project, Akur and Ben, said the money from the sale of the cubbies would be put towards helping VCAL students next year. The funds will go towards establishing a cafe at the college, so the teenagers can learn how to use a coffee machine and grinder. The cubbies were built by year 12 VCAL students in the school’s trades centre. Bunnings Warehouse in Hoppers Crossing donated $1500 worth of materials and tools to the project. Ben said the team-bonding between the VCAL students and the memories he has from the cubby houses’ construction have become highlights of his year 12 experience. “I am going to try to find an apprenticeship in

East Werribee jobs a ‘priority’ Wyndham council has renewed calls for the Werribee National Employment and Innovation Cluster (NEIC) to be prioritised in planning Melbourne’s future development. The call for action is included in a submission the council will send to the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP), in response to the draft Western Metro Land Use Framework Plan (WMLUFP). The WMLUFP has been prepared by DELWP under Plan Melbourne 2017-2050, with the aim of better aligning state and local planning strategies across the next 30 years.
Wyndham’s submission to DELWP received the thumbs-up from councillors at a meeting last week. The document said “the first and most critical issue is to seek whole of government delivery of the Werribee National Employment and Innovation Cluster (NEIC) as part of the WMLUFP’s Five-Year Action Program”. About six years ago, a consortium seeking to build a $31 billion education city on more than 400 hectares of the East Werribee precinct was selected by the state government as the preferred bidder for the site.
But in 2019 the state government decided not to proceed with the Expressions of Interest process for East Werribee. However, Wyndham council’s submission to DELWP said “development of the East Werribee precinct should be of the highest single priority”. “Wyndham with its huge population growth needs an employment precinct to enable it to be a satellite city and allow people to work closer to home,” the report said. “The business case for this has been further bolstered by COVID-19.”
Aside from NEIC, the council has also urged DELWP to accelerate the establishment of tree canopy cover to improve the sustainability and resilience of the Western metropolitan region. Another environmental concern raised in the response was the need to designate the Western Grasslands Reserve as a National Park. The council report said that as the west is developing at a rapid rate, the Western Grasslands Reserve should become a National Park “so that this precious part of our local environment can be properly preserved and maintained”.
COVID inspires dark art Achille Maiotti has painted an artwork showcasing the “surreal” and sad reality of life during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Maiotti, who works as a physiotherapist at MyPhysio in Greens Road, Wyndham Vale, said he was inspired by Pablo Picasso’s painting Guernica. The 1937 oil on canvas was painted after the bombing of a town in the autonomous area of the Basque Country, Spain, by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Maiotti said he grew up surrounded by art and enjoys painting as a relaxing and creative past-time. His father, Ganni Maiotti, was a painter in Italy who had several exhibitions in Europe before he died at the age of 71. Maiotti his COVID-inspired painting took around two months to complete. “During the first long lockdown experienced last year I started feeling almost as if we were living in a war-like situation – although I have
been lucky enough to never experience war,” he said. Maiotti said the stillness, quiet and rationing of food at supermarkets in Melbourne had all contributed to the odd atmosphere of lockdowns since March last year. “Obviously there were deaths reported from Italy, my country of origin, as well as here in Australia,” he added. “Guernica, the painting by Picasso that inspired my idea, obviously was bombed and the situation was different, but in the end, COVID was – and is – tearing the country apart.” Maiotti said he has shown the artwork to some of his patients at MyPhysio. “Most of them liked it and they have given me different interpretations, all of them were great,” he said. “I am now in the process of doing another painting, still COVID themed but in a different style and subject.”

Teen’s skate park vision At 13, Baker is already a skating guru. So much so, that he was approached to help design a new skate park built as part of the level crossing removal project in Werribee last year. It forms part of 30,000 square metres of open space under and around a new rail bridge which now separates cars from trains. The new build means the budding pro-skater now has a world-class skate park just minutes down the road from his home. His involvement in the park’s design has whetted his appetite for a future in engineering. “The park has good line and good flow,“ Baker said. “I like it all, and there are seating areas so you can chill with your mates.” Lead designer Darren White, of
Victorian-based company Baseplate, said Baker’s presentation absolutely blew him away. “He was a bit nervous at first but the minute the subject turned to skating Baker was in his element,” he said. White said the Werribee skate park, which weaves amongst bridge columns, is unique in Melbourne – if not Australia. “That was our biggest challenge,” he said. “How do you design a skate park under a bridge?” In Baker’s view, it’s the park’s unique location that turned out to be a massive drawcard. “At first I thought the columns would be an intrusion but because they’ve been turned into obstacles they aren’t invasive at all,” he said. “It’s actually good because everyone is skating through the park, not across it.”

being forced to use services at public hospitals outside the area. “The demand exists for Werribee Mercy Hospital to deliver more babies locally but this cannot occur without expanded facilities,” Mr Payne said. “It would be preferable that local families had access to more of the best high quality and safe public birthing services at Werribee Mercy Hospital, so they don’t have to travel.” Mr Payne said planning was under way to boost the capacity of the birthing suites. “A third stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is currently in the final stages of planning, will involve the creation of more
birthing suites, additional post-natal beds, and other ante and post-natal facilities, accompanied by additional midwifery and nursing staff. “Based on demand for existing maternity services, it is projected that Werribee Mercy Hospital would be well placed to meet an anticipated increase in demand of up to 30 per cent more babies in the western metro area.” Mr Payne said Mercy Health has been working with the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and the Department of Health and Human Services since 2016 to prepare for the future needs of Werribee Mercy.
In November’s state budget, $4.8 million was allocated to finalise planning for the third stage of the hospital’s development. “We have acknowledged publicly the funding was a clear sign the voices of the people of the west of Melbourne are being heard and government is committed to meeting a major upgrade,” Mr Payne said. Mercy Health Group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s construction required $300 million in funding “to ensure the people of Wyndham receive the level and quality of health services they deserve and need”.

Full house at Mercy Demand for birthing suites at Werribee Mercy Hospital has reached capacity. The hospital welcomed 3833 babies in 2020, slightly lower than the 3888 babies delivered there in 2019. New bottleshop knocked back By Alesha Capone Werribee residents say they are “over the moon” after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) refused plans to build a bottleshop near their homes. The tribunal issued a decision to knock back the proposal last month, following a hearing in September. VCAT declined Princes Wattle Pty Ltd’s plan to construct a two-storey Dan Murphy’s bottleshop, along with 32 car parks and three “click and collect” vehicle spaces, at 18-20 and
22 Princes Highway, which is near Wattle Avenue. The store’s proposed opening hours were 9am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 9pm Sunday. Princes Wattle Pty Ltd took the matter to VCAT after Wyndham council refused the planning permit earlier this year. When the matter was heard by the council in August, 18 objections from nearby residents were lodged about the botleshop’s proposed design, in addition to the noise and anti-social behaviour it could have generated.
The residents also expressed fears about additional traffic generated by the bottleshop and a lack of “safe car parking”. One of the residents who objected to the bottleshop plan, Brian Gosney, spoke to the VCAT hearing. Mr Gosney said he and other residents were “extremely happy” with the VCAT decision. VCAT member Tracey Bilston-McGillen said she decided to refuse the bottleshop development “as the proposed design fails to achieve policies that guide the development of the (surrounding) activity centre and this site”. Ms Bilston-McGillen said that if built, the
Half century milestone Hilary Haynes says that maintaining a positive attitude is important when living with an illness that affects her every day. The Wyndham Vale resident, 66, has received a Kellion Victory Medal from Diabetes Victoria. The medals acknowledge people who have lived with diabetes for 50 or more years. “You really have to be positive with something that lasts your whole life long,” Hilary said. “You have to take each day as it comes, don’t let it rule your life.” Hilary said that when she was diagnosed at the age of 14, most people had never heard of diabetes. She remembers being thirsty and experiencing bad cramps. One day, her mother found her vomiting and took her to hospital. Hilary fell unconscious in the car on the way.
“Next thing I knew, I woke up in hospital with a drip in my arm,” she said. Two years after discovering she had type one diabetes, Hilary met Geoff, her future husband. Hilary said she believed Geoff also deserved a medal for helping with her with diabetes. “I wouldn’t have survived without him, he’s learned everything about diabetes and gone with me to doctors and medical appointments,” she said. Hilary said she has to have four injections a day. Diabetes is starting to impact upon her eyesight as well. She said it would be good if the federal government would subsidise the price of insulin pumps, which cost around $8500 and are unaffordable for many people. Ensuring health equality for all Christopher Carter, chief executive, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network “We are one, but we are many,” as the song lyric goes, and that sentiment is particularly true of our region. North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network encompasses 13 local government areas across 3212 square kilometres containing more than 1.6 million people who, between them, speak more than 200 languages. This glorious diversity speaks for itself, but across our community there is also another, less welcome, set of differences. Some groups have shorter lives and poorer health than others,and some have limited access to healthcare. Some available health and welfare services are not used by all those that need them, and some localities and communities carry a very high burden of disadvantage. We believe in a principle known as ‘health equity’ – the idea that every individual, group and community should have a fair chance to reach their full health potential without being disadvantaged by social, economic and environmental conditions. To help make this idea a reality for our region, we have just released the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network Access and Equity Framework. The framework commits us to tackle the challenges of ensuring equitable access to health services across our highly diverse region. Importantly, community groups and members have been – and will continue to be – involved in designing strategies to boost access to health services in ways that are culturally appropriate. The whole process has been underpinned by a human rights approach to health. There is no

excuse, we firmly believe, for anyone’s culture, age, or beliefs to get in the way of health advice, treatment or support. It is also very important that healthcare
providers continue recognising, respecting and nurturing people’s unique cultural identity. A crucial matter in this regard is accepting that the idea of community is multi-dimensional. Across Melbourne, communities exist around shared language, for instance, or shared gender identities, shared histories, or shared beliefs. People often belong to more than one community. This is a concept known as “intersectionality”. It recognises that
sometimes a combination of factors can interact to produce complex and stubborn forms of inequity. Our framework includes the recognition of intersectionality as a guiding principle for its implementation. Ensuring health equity is not a simple matter – and we are committed to tackling it in even its most complex forms. We are one, for sure, but also many – and it’s important to do all we can to ensure all of us can sing that song in harmony.

HiAce van has added attractions By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring If it ain’t broke don’t fix it: this could well be the case with the HiAce, Toyota’s iconic van, which the company stuck with for 15 years without replacing. The light commercial was around until a 2019 rebirth, now it becomes the subject of a range of upgrades. The HiAce van, and related Commuter bus and Granvia wagon, have been boosted with added technology and comfort and convenience features while offering a streamlined choice for customers. Long the leader in the 2.5 to 3.5 tonne van segment with sales this year increasing by 51.9 per cent, customer preference for diesel power, has led to the 3.5-litre petrol V6 for HiAce being discontinued in favour of Toyota’s tough 2.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, mated with an automatic transmission. New safety and security technology come with the fitment of Toyota Connected Services to all models. Inside, all benefit from upgraded features, with Granvia incorporating a higher level of luxury with rear privacy glass and carpeted front floor mats now standard. For HiAce, a large centre console box has been added to store paperwork while Commuter GL grades gain an LED lamp inside the box to aid vision, as well as upgraded USB charging ports. The added features adopted for HiAce come with price increases of just $990 across the range, while upgraded Granvia prices rise by less than two per cent. On test was the HiAce GL long wheelbase automatic van, selling for $47,230, plus on-road costs.

compared with the previous model where the engine sat under the front seats directly above the axle. It also provides easier access to the engine bay, improved safety and greater stability and ride comfort. The wide track gives the vehicle a planted stance, while the solid sides of the front bumper have been rounded off at the grille to improve working in tight CBD spaces. Aerodynamics are enhanced by a raked windscreen and side mouldings, chamfered rear corners and five stabilising fins on the side of the rear lamps. French Vanilla is now the only paint choice.
Interior Lack of a dedicated space for clipboard storage is a drawback, a centre console storage box as standard, replacing the existing console tray. Included in the new storage box is a removable in-box tray, an A4-sized binder rack, and a moveable partition at the rear of the box that can be used as a cupholder. Other range-wide standard equipment additions include front all-weather floor mats, 1.5-litre bottle holder and storage bin in each front door, with cup holders in the centre and
on either side of the dashboard. There’s also a glovebox and spot to the left of the gearshift for small stuff.
Engines / transmissions All versions of the HiAce and Granvia are powered by Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, mated to an automatic transmission, with a six-speed manual gearbox also offered on HiAce LWB van. The turbodiesel engine develops 130 kW and 450 Nm when teamed with the six-speed automatic, however with the manual gearbox maximum torque is 420 Nm. In the HiAce Commuter, the turbodiesel engine produces maximum outputs of 120 kW of power and 420 Nm of torque.
Safety The addition of Toyota Connected Services automatically generates an emergency call to Toyota’s around-the-clock emergency call centre and relay the location of the vehicle in the event of a collision that requires intervention, or if an airbag goes off. Occupants can also manually trigger an emergency call to the call centre via an SOS
The tried-and-tested diesel powerplant is muted and there’s little wind noise, leaving road rumble to intrude into the cabin. Adding loads to the cavernous cargo area puts paid to much of this unwanted driving accompaniment. There was not much to argue with Toyota’s combined urban / highway fuel consumption figure of 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres, with the test vehicle recording 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres under city delivery duties and 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres on a highway run. The stop / start system is one of the best encountered in any vehicle, with instantaneous fire-up from rest. For the automotive equivalent of ‘anti-vaxxers’ it can be switched off. Loading through wide side doors was easy thanks to their easy slide functioning. The vertical lift tailgate - no barn doors offered - is no friend to the forklift but is a handy shelter while manual loading in wet weather. Ride and handling on test improved with load, as you would expect from a goods hauler with rear-wheel drive. Inclines offered little limit to performance and filtering into motorway traffic presented no white-knuckle stress.
Summary While the HiAce relied for many years on its solid reputation to lead the field, Toyota has been quick to add fine touches to the latest generation of the iconic van in a bid to stave off any challenges from close rivals.

Werribee Giants make a pitch for new members The Werribee Giants Baseball Club, which has just started training again following the lifting of statewide COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, is inviting community members to attend its Summer Come ‘n’ Try days this weekend. The sessions will be held Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 3pm at the club headquarters at Presidents Park. The events will include baseball activities and a free hotdog and drink for juniors. The club’s junior co-ordinator Tanya Dewhurst said everyone in Wyndham who is interested in baseball was invited to come and say hello. “Each day we will be running some drills including the fastest pitch competition with daily prizes including vouchers from Sprinkles, Bubble Cup and a signed baseball from the Melbourne Aces,” she said. Ms Dewhurst said Werribee was a family-oriented club where everyone is welcomed, regardless of age and ability. “We have teams ranging from tee-ball for the little ones, juniors for 12’s, 14’s and 16’s as well as women’s and senior’s teams for the grown-ups,” she said. The club offers junior baseball for boys and girls of all skills levels, aged between eight and 17 years old. Tee-ball is also available for youngsters aged between four and eight years old.

With lockdown ending, the club has just commenced training for juniors on Tuesday nights from 5pm to 6.30pm. The club will offer women’s baseball during the summer 2021-22 season for girls and women of all skill levels aged 13 and above. The Werribee Giants Baseball Club was formed in 1983 and is one of the few Victorian baseball clubs that runs 12 months of the year, competing both in winter from April to September, and in summer from September to

March. In its early days, the club played on what could best be described as a “sheep paddock” and had no clubrooms. Nowadays, the club’s main diamond is fully enclosed with lights for training purposes, a double batting cage, a six-person bullpen and a scorer’s box. Top honour for Campbell By Tara Murray Parkside’s Shaun Campbell’s blistering form this season has been recognised with the Alan Smith Medal for the Western Region Football League’s division 2 best and fairest. The league hosted an online ceremony to announce the winners of the awards for the men’s competition on Thursday night due to COVID-19 restrictions. Campbell polled 20 votes to finish four ahead of North Footscray’s Adam Petridis. Albion’s Cody Bench and Wyndhamvale’s Daniel Smith finished third. Campbell dominated the division 2 awards, also being named the leading goal kicker and captain of the team of the year. He was one of four Parkside players named in the division 2 team of the year. Caroline Springs gun Stephen Brewer claimed the League’s top honour, like a bottle of wine that keeps getting better with age. While most people his age have retired from football, the 37-year-old produced one of his best seasons to claim the Barry Priest Medal for the best and fairest player in division 1. Brewer took the lead in the count in the second last round and despite not polling in the final round, was able to hold on. It’s the first time a Lakers player has claimed the Barry Priest Medal. Brewer, a former VFL player, has starred since joining the club, including winning the club’s 2019 best and fairest. It’s not the first time he’s been in contention for a league best and fairest. Back in 2014, Brewer, who was playing for Greenvale, finished second in the Essendon District Football League Reynolds Medal for the best player in premier division. Brewer was named in the centre in the division 1 team of the year this year, with his Lakers teammate Max Tessari named on the bench. Altona coach Corey McCall was picked as the coach of the team of the year while Hoppers Crossing star Ashlin Brown was selected captain. Players from eight of the 10 division 1 teams were named in the team of the year, with Hoppers Crossing having the most
representatives with five. In other division 1 awards, Spotswood’s Nick Graham was voted the most valuable player by the coaches. Altona’s Saad El-Hawli was named the rookie of the year. North Footscray David Battistella was named the overall WRFL senior coach of the year. Wyndham Suns’ John Tomelty won the Ron & Thelma Angwin Medal for the best player in division 3. Tomelty finished on 11 votes to finish two clear of Braybrook’s Aidan O’Rafferty, Albanvale’s Bobby Saric and Sunshine Heights Justin Zahra. Tomelty, who was named at centre half forward in the division 3 team of the year, polled three votes in the final round to seal the medal. His Suns teammate, playing coach Dean Cachia was named coach of the year as well as in the forward line, while Albanvale’s Brendan Cassar was selected as captain. There were six Suns players named, while five Albanvale players also made the team.
The Werribee Racing Club says it is “thrilled” to welcome back crowds to the track for this year’s TAB Werribee Cup on Sunday, December 5. Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed the return of crowds to race meetings in Victoria as the state nears its target of 80% of Victorians 16 years and older being fully vaccinated. There will be plenty happening around the track during the day of the Cup, with free kids activities, Fashions on the Field and a variety of food vans across the course. Live performances by Madz Got Rich, Lewis Pidutti and Wilde Style will entertain spectators. Werribee Racing Club said it has already experienced “an overwhelming response from the community” in response to ticket sales for the Cup. January start for Western Jets’ girls The Western Jets’ girls’ team will return to the field in January under changes to the AFL Talent Pathway Program in 2022. The AFL have announced a remodeled boy’s and girls’ programs following a review into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new calendar of football will have alignment with competitions across Australia and provide talented players with multiple options for football competition to showcase their skills and qualities ahead of the AFL and AFLW Drafts. It’s hoped the new program will allow for opportunities for elite development while keeping a connection to community football. The girls’ season will get under way on January 22, with the grand final to be played on the weekend of April 9. The Jets’ boy’s season will kick off on the weekend of April 2, with the boy’s grand final
to be played in mid-to-late September. Both programs will kick-off pre-season in November. Under-16 and under-18 national championships will run, with the girls championships to run in March and April, while the majority of the boys carnival will be held in June and July. The national academies for the top players in the country will be announced in December. AFL national talent development and competitions manager Grant Williams said the model for 2022 will provide talented athletes the greatest opportunity for success – on and off the football field. “Australian football continues to attract the best young athletes in Australia and to maintain this momentum it is crucial the talent model provides all players and staff the greatest opportunity to succeed,” Williams said.

Club is ‘whole package’ By Tara Murray Western United provides the whole package, according to new striker Aleksandar Prijovic. Prijovic spoke with the media on Thursday, after getting out of quarantine early due to changes in the system. Prijovic, who joined United on a multi-year deal, has enjoyed a prolific career-to-date across Europe and the Middle East and will add another dimension to Western United’s attack. He most recently played with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. The Serbian said it was nice to get out of the hotel and meet his new teammates. He will soon be joined by his family who will make the journey to Australia. “It has been tough with the quarantine,” he said. “I was lucky to get out earlier and join the team. I’m happy to be here … I’m very motivated to catch up the rhythm and get used to the team and to start the season. “I trained already on the side. Soon I will join the team to train.”
Prijovic, who has scored more than 150 goals in 400 games, said he had received many offers for this season. He said while many of the clubs had some benefits, many didn’t provide the whole package. “Many offers from Europe, Asia also. At some point I was refusing many offers, [as] the whole package was not right. “Here was the whole package. The whole situation is that it’s a new club where we can do something big and build up something from the beginning, and this was for me a motivation to join this team.” Prijovic said he had watched some footage of the competition before coming to Australia and had played with some players who had previously played in the competition. Filling the role that was previously filled by Besart Berisha, the league’s leading goal scorer, Prijovic said he didn’t feel the pressure to produce the same output. “I’m very motivated and put enough pressure on myself all my life as a professional football player,” he said. “I’ve been doing pretty well so far.
“I’m someone who works hard and wants to compete and get better, i don’t see any pressure from outside, I do that already enough on myself. “I’m in my best years as a striker.” Prijovic said he was aiming to be fit for round one on November 20 and would work hard in the meantime to get himself up to fitness. The 31-year-old said he would look to help some of the younger strikers progress their career, something he had success in previously. He also gave United fans a hint of what to expect from him this season. “[I’m a] finisher in the box,” he said. “That’s my zone, that’s where I’m dangerous. I think my body is a plus in building up and holding up the ball.” United coach John Aloisi praised Prijovic’s continuity at the highest level and said it is a big plus to have the striker coming in with confidence and form on his side. “What we love about Aleksandar is his consistency in scoring goals regardless of where he has played and his desire to continue to add to his tally with Western United,” he said when Prijovic signed with the club.
Hoppers Crossing Football Club has announced its senior women’s coaching panel for next year. Kerry Saunders has been named head coach for 2022 and Ollie D’Rozario and Glen Murrell as assistant coaches. Saunders has played more than 300 games with the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL), mainly with St Kilda Sharks, where she also coached the team to a number of premierships. Saunders began playing football with VWFL Wantirna South Warriors in 1989, before moving to the Parkville Scorpions in 1990. She has also been the recipient of best and fairest awards from multiple clubs and served on the VWFL committee. After saying farewell to the Sharks, Saunders spent time at the Wyndhamvale, Sunbury and Point Cook football clubs. In 2002, she was awarded life membership of the VWFL. Saunders has represented both the state and the nation as a cricket player. She played for the Victorian state women’s cricket team between 1983 and 1994, plus in 13 One Day Internationals for the Australian women’s cricket team. D’Rozario, who started playing football at the Spurs in the 1990s, spent seven years as a premier league beach volleyball player and coach. With a passion for teaching and developing female athletes, she has coached football and athletics, D’Rozario is now coaching a senior women’s cricket program and runs one-on-one cricket coaching sessions for juniors. Murrell will continue as an assistant coach, after his first year of coaching this season with the Hoppers Crossing women’s team. He is a past player and senior best and fairest winner at Hoppers Crossing FC.
