As the state continues to open up after coming out of lockdown, people are looking forward to catching up with loved ones over a bite to eat. During this time, Wyndham council has asked residents to support the 22,000 local businesses which are recovering from the impacts of the COVID pandemic. Wyndham’s future focused economy portfolio holder, Cr Mia Shaw, said that for every $100 spent at local small businesses, $67 stayed within Wyndham. “To ensure you keep up with what is open and which services you can use, visit the Wyndham Open Business Directory (www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ wyndhamopen), which features a listing of businesses currently operating in a range of categories, from professional services to cafes and retail,” Cr Shaw said. WestLink funding fight By Alesha Capone Lalor MP Joanne Ryan has renewed calls for the federal government to commit funding to the Wyndham WestLink project. Earlier this year, Wyndham council’s pre-budget submission to the federal government also requested funding for WestLink, which needs an estimated $50 to $100 million to go ahead. The first stage of the project would link Armstrong and Ison roads between Black Forest Road and the Princes Freeway, with a four-lane bridge over the railway line. A road bridge would also connect Armstrong Road and Sayers Road, over the Werribee River.
Wyndham council and developers have already committed to constructing sections of WestLink that fall within their jurisdiction, on either side of the Ison Road bridge location. Lendlease have almost completed the construction of a duplicated Ison Road on the north side, from the base of the Ison Road bridge to Armstrong Road. The council has allocated funding for the construction of a duplicated Ison Road between Princes Highway and the base of the bridge. As well, the state government has committed $14 million to start work on the Ison Road overpass.
During the last national election, the federal Labor party – now the Opposition – said they would put $50 million towards the project, if they were elected. Ms Ryan has called on Wyndham residents to join her campaign for federal funding of the Wyndham Westlink ahead of the next federal election, which is due to be held before or during 2022. Speaking at Parliament House in Canberra last week, Ms Ryan said Wyndham was forecast to become home to half a million residents by 2041, with 70 per cent of this growth to be in Wyndham Vale, Tarneit and Truganina. “But this growth is failing to be met with
infrastructure funding from the Morrison government,” she said. “This means locals are spending longer in traffic and less time at home with their families.” Ms Ryan said the first stage of WestLink would link Werribee and Wyndham Vale and “save precious time for those commuting to Melbourne and Geelong, by connecting them to the freeway”. “It will ease congestion on suburban streets because commuters will not travel through the heart of Wyndham to access the freeway,” she said. Jobless rate rises in Wyndham Wyndham’s unemployment rate hit 7.7 per cent in the June quarter, according to figures released by the federal government. The data showed that in comparison, Wyndham’s unemployment rate in June, 2020, stood at 6.5 per cent. In the latest set of labour force figures, which dated from between April to June this year, there were more than 11,500 unemployed Wyndham residents. Municipalities that recorded higher unemployment numbers than Wyndham included Whittlesea with an 8.4 per cent jobless rate, Dandenong with an 8.6 per cent jobless rate, Melton with an 8.9 per cent jobless rate and Brimbank with a 10.1 per cent jobless rate.
Hume, in the northern suburbs, topped the state with an unemployment rate of 12.1 per cent. Wyndham’s future focused portfolio holder, Cr Mia Shaw, said the council was committed to working with partner agencies to support residents in finding employment and educational pathways. “Wyndham residents have been resilient through the pandemic and now is the time to rebuild and help our city move forward,” Cr Shaw said. “Council works with a range of organisations to link our residents with the services they need.” Cr Shaw said the council has partnered
with the state government and The Huddle to deliver the Jobs Victoria Advocate program. “The program assists Wyndham residents looking for employment,” Cr Shaw said. “The service provides information, referral and connection to available resources and supports.” Cr Shaw said a council initiative called Opportunity Wyndham provided local businesses with free tools, resources and access to recruitment services and local talent to build stronger, more inclusive workplaces. “The initiative brings together Wyndham city council, local employment partners and businesses to build local pathways to employment, with support from the Victoria
state government,” she said. “Council encourages residents seeking assistance to contact Opportunity Wyndham team that can put you in touch with agencies/ people that can help you take the next step”. Warm school welcome A Werribee school welcomed pupils back on-site last week with a red carpet, balloon arch and bubble machine. Teachers and staff members at Wyndham Park Primary School greeted the children after they entered the school gates, as COVID-19 restrictions eased across the state. For many of the youngsters, last week was the first time in months that they had set foot on the school grounds after months of learning from home. The red carpet and other celebratory gestures remained at the school for multiple days, as students from different year levels came back to school in staggered stages. School principal Labal Toose said it was wonderful to see the pupils again. “(It) feels joyful to have our community back onsite and the sounds of children back at school
have made me very happy, I have not been able to wipe the smile off my face,” Mr Toose said. Grade 2 pupil Mackenzie said she “felt like a movie star walking the red carpet” and was excited to see her friends. Mackenzie said she was surprised by the bubbles and balloons. “They made me smile,” she said. Families also took photos of their children posing on the red carpet in school uniform. The school’s therapy dog Ella was present on Thursday and Friday for the students to pat. All Victorian students are expected to return to school campuses on Friday, November 5 when the state hopes to hit its 80 per cent COVID-19 vaccination target. Family’s cancer journey
New carpark for Werribee
By Alesha Capone Werribee’s Brooke Payne was just 36 years old and a mother to three young children when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Only a year or two earlier, Brooke’s mother-in-law, Hazel, was also diagnosed with breast cancer. Brooke said that after experiencing chest pains for about six months, she made a GP appointment after finding a lump around the size of a golf ball in her breast. She described feeling “in shock” after being diagnosed. Brooke, now 38, said that Hazel was “a massive help” at this time, referring her to doctors and accompanying her to medical appointments. While undergoing a course of chemotherapy, an operation and radiotherapy, Brooke kept her husband Gareth and their children Harry, Jude and Ivy – who are now aged 11, 10 and seven-and-a-half, respectively – foremost in her thoughts. Brooke said that while chemotherapy was not as bad as she feared it might be, the tiredness she experienced was the greatest challenge. “For six months I was exhausted every day, which has lingered but it is still getting better,” she said. “The fatigue, trying to be a mum operating day-to-day basis, when all I wanted to do was sleep.” Brooke said that her friends and family were “amazing” during her medical treatment, dropping off meals and sending her messages of support. One of her treatments was not included in the PBS, so a friend set a GoFundMe age which raised around $24,000 to cover the cost. Brooke is now reaching the end of her treatment and waiting for her second

reconstruction surgery. With Breast Cancer Awareness Month falling in October, Brooke said she would encourage women and men of all ages to be aware of breast cancer. “Because you are young, don’t think it won’t happen – it may not, but it could,” she said. The McGrath Foundation is reminding

A new undercover multi-storey carpark has opened in Werribee. The Hunter Werribee Public Car Park has 167 undercover spaces available for the public, including eight accessible parking spaces. The carpark is located within the Holiday Inn building, on the corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road. Entry is via Synnot Street or Rushford Lane. Motorists can park at the site free-of-charge for up to three hours day. A fee applies for longer parking. The car park, which will be open 365 days per year, features elevator access and CCTV surveillance. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said she would encourage everyone, particularly workers and traders, to try the new carpark. “The new high-tech, multi-storey carpark is a safe, accessible, affordable and central parking facility for Werribee city centre customers and workers,” Cr Hegedich said. “Our commitment to supporting the continued growth of Werribee city centre’s vibrant business district has been demonstrated through the addition of the new undercover public parking facility in the heart of our city.” Additionally, the carpark operates with a ticket-less parking management system that uses number plate reading technology. For visitors using the carpark for three hours or more, all payments must be made by credit card or EFTPOS.

A new $1.2 million park in Tarneit featuring a forest garden and giant slide has opened. The Universal Road Park at Newhaven Tarneit also includes some undercover swings, meaning youngsters can continue playing if it rains. The outdoor space also has climbing nets, walls and frames, an open lawn and a shaded picnic area. The forest garden contains a meandering pathway and colourful landscaping. The park has been designed by property developer Peet and Urban Edge Landscape, in conjunction with a website that reviews playgrounds and cafes in the western suburbs. Peet Limited chief executive and managing director Brendan Gore said that Newhaven Tarneit would give local families space to enjoy themselves. Tamara Chan, sales manager at home
building company Langdon – which recently opened a new display house at Newhaven – said that area’s park would offer families, which did not have a large yard at home, the chance to enjoy the outdoors. In August this year, Peet Limited also opened a new part in the Cornerstone Werribee area. Raffles Walk Park at Cornerstone Werribee was inspired by the You Yangs Regional Park. The park has large boulders for climbing, which range from 50 to 80 tonnes in weight and stand up to three metres tall, along with a climbing course with ropes, platforms, a lookout tower and a curving slide. Dr Mark Pilgrim has been announced as the new director of Werribee Open Range Zoo. Dr Pilgrim, who previously spent more than 30 years working at the North of England Zoological Society’s Chester Zoo, will start at Werribee during March next year. He will take over from current director Glen Holland.
Rooming houses registered Three new rooming houses have been registered with Wyndham council this year. Manager of the council’s Climate Futures Office, Peter McKinnon, said five new rooming houses were registered in 2020, including one after a council investigation. “Council regularly conducts investigations into possible unlicensed rooming houses,” Mr McKinnon said.

End of COVID support is hurting By Alesha Capone A new report has found that the withdrawal of pandemic-related government support has caused widespread problems among the state’s disadvantaged and homeless populations. Uniting Vic.Tas and Swinburne University’s Centre for Social Impact last week released the report, following the removal of the federal government’s $550 COVID-19 JobSeeker income supplement and the state government’s moratorium of private rental evictions and rent relief earlier this year.
A total of 113 people who accessed Uniting Vic.Tas’ emergency relief and homelessness services at locations including Werribee, Ballarat, Bendigo, Mount Waverley, Ringwood and Wodonga, between May 10 and June 21, participated in surveys which contributed to the report’s findings. Almost two-thirds of those surveyed said that when the government income support was withdrawn, their mental health suffered. Sixty-one per cent of respondents said that an end to support impacted upon their ability to “eat well”. More than 44 per cent of people said that when the supports came to an end, they
struggled to pay their rent or mortgage. About a third of parents found it more difficult to care for their children properly. Sixteen per cent of those surveyed said the end of the support put them at risk of family violence. The report said that overall, this data presented “compelling evidence of the positive impact of the income and housing support measures provided during the first year of the pandemic, with life-improving for the majority of consumers”. Uniting Vic.Tas chief executive Bronwyn Pike wrote a foreword to the report, in which she said: “It is clear that we need a permanent
increase in the base rate of JobSeeker and other social security payments. “These payments should support people so they are above the poverty line and should be benchmarked to wage growth. “There should be an increase in Rent Assistance so that everyone around the country can live in a decent home. “The JobSeeker and parenting payments are not handouts; they are about giving people a basic standard of living while they get back on their feet. “Nobody should have to make a choice between paying the electricity bill and buying necessities like food or medicine.”
Master Geoff’s charity cook-up Hoppers Crossing man Geoff Hayhow will cook up a series of delicious meals next month to raise funds for a cause close to his heart. Mr Hayhow is participating in the annual 3 Course Challenge to raise money for Breast Cancer Trials, a group of doctors and researchers based in Australia and New Zealand committed to finding better treatments for people affected by breast cancer through clinical trials research. The 3 Course Challenge invites participants to host a three-course dinner – either in person or online – with their friends and family before November 30, in return for donations. Mr Hayhow has so far raised more than $660 for the challenge, surpassing his overall goal of $500. The cooking enthusiast said he hoped to be
able to host an in-person dinner party before the end of November. He also participated in the 3 Course Challenge last year, with guests joining him and wife Rhonda for an online dinner party via Zoom, due to COVID-19 restrictions preventing home visits. Mr Hayhow said while there were many worthy causes, he wanted to participate in the 3 Course Challenge because cancer has touched both his and Rhonda’s families. His uncle had breast cancer, while two of Rhonda’s aunts have as well. Rhonda’s mother also passed away at the age of 49, after being diagnosed with cancer. Mr Hayhow said that aside from raising funds for Breast Cancer Trials, he wanted to encourage other people to join in the challenge for the fun of learning to cook. “I’m a really keen cook, I have been cooking

How did you feel to be announced as the recipient of the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement? I was totally shocked and hugely honoured to receive the award. The award was a recognition of the commitment and professionalism of everyone at AMES. It celebrates our world-class programs which everyone at AMES has a hand in delivering.
Given how multicultural the western suburbs are, do you think migration programs will be vital to ensure Australia’s economic recovery from COVID? The west of Melbourne, and particularly Wyndham, is one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia; and one of the most diverse. Migrants and refugees are attracted by existing communities, jobs and the availability of housing. We can see that increased migration will be an important part of Australia’s economic recovery from the COVID pandemic, so places like the west and north will be really important in this process.
Did you ever meet Ms Kosky? Not at AMES but before AMES, at The Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL), when she was minister for education, she was a great supporter of our programs to assist young people at risk of leaving school early.
What do you enjoy most about your work with AMES? I enjoy meeting people who have come from different parts of the globe and who bring interesting perspectives, cultures and stories. I also enjoy the idea that we at AMES are supporting people to build new lives in Australia – some who are fleeing conflict or persecution but who nevertheless have amazingly positive outlooks on life. I joined AMES in 2008 in a new role leading our community programs and developing a research and policy capacity, which now does amazing work documenting what works and providing evidence-based policy advice to government and others. Many arrived with just a passport and the clothes they were wearing, so we have been supporting them initially with accommodation, clothing and basic necessities. As they find their feet, this work will transition to support in finding educational and employment pathways as well as connecting them with local communities and the broader society. Family chips in to help The family who runs Kippers Seafood Fish & Chips say the Werribee business is like a second home. The El Hawlis have been operating the fish and chip shop for almost two decades. Brothers Azmi, Ahmed and Mohamed work alongside their other relatives every day, in the business their father started about 18 to 19 years ago. “With all our customers, they become like our family,” Ahmed said. “It’s definitely the family atmosphere that I enjoy, you go for a walk down the street in Werribee and someone says hello every five minutes.” Ahmed said that he and his family often chat to their customers about football.

Shining a light on spooky haunts From the inner suburbs to the rural areas, Melbourne’s north and west is rife with tales of haunted houses, ghosts and spirit sightings. As Halloween approaches, Alesha Capone explores the underbelly of spectres and otherworldly presences which may, or may not, lurk just beyond the fabric of our own world.
W
hile the spooky and the supernatural is often explored by films, television and books, many Melburnians have their own real-life tales about encounters with “the other side”. There are plenty of well-known sites in the north and west which are reportedly haunted. Among them, the Altona, Eynesbury and Point Cook homesteads, Werribee Mansion, some historic Williamstown hotels, the former Sunbury Asylum, the old Greenvale Sanatorium, Geelong Gaol and Pentridge Prison in Coburg. Lantern Ghost Tours founder Jacqueline Travaglia knows many of the uncanny tales and urban legends connected to these places as her company conducts tours at several of the locations. Jacqueline names Williamstown, where Lantern Ghost Tours is based, as the site of the scariest ghost story in the north and west. Three former “ladies of the night” haunt the lane next to the Titanic Theatre Restaurant in Nelson Place, she says.

- Jacqueline Travaglia “We call them the Lavender ladies due to the strong smell of Lavender. “They are extremely active. “Some people complain of burnt sinuses from the smell, as well others have felt scratches on their throats and pinches on their bottoms.” When asked about some of the lesser-known haunted places of the western suburbs, Jacqueline says Footscray “has a rich and interesting history with more than its fair share of ghosts, especially along the Maribyrong River”. “Illegal gambling, crime families and old piggery have provided a lot of interesting ghost stories,” she says. Jacqueline says one of her favourite ghost stories involves the Chirnside family. Brothers Thomas and Andrew Chirnside came from Scotland to Australia in 1839. They built Werribee Mansion and the Point Cook Homestead. Unusual occurrences such as objects moving about and ghostly figures being sighted have been reported at the mansion, while the homestead is believed to be haunted by a young boy, the former gamekeeper and a lady who wears Victorian clothing. “Thomas was only in his 20s when he set off to Australia,” Jacqueline says. “He managed to create a huge pastoral empire and created a name for himself breeding racehorses. “He was later joined by his brother Andrew and his cousin Mary, who he wanted to marry. “In a strange twist of events, his brother Andrew married Mary. “Even stranger, the three remained friends.” Tragically, Thomas Chirnside committed suicide with a shotgun in 1887 and his body was found in the laundry of Werribee Mansion. The mansion is not the only haunted site in Werribee. Stories submitted by Star Weekly readers tell of a number of eerie occurrences in the area. Miranda says she used to live in a Market Road house and would see a mysterious elderly man in the kitchen and hallway. “My daughters started seeing a little girl called Jane they used to play outside with her and I saw her on their swing smiling,” she says. “The ghosts never hurt us but they were always there.”

Nickola, says that while living in a Margaret Street house, her young daughter would talk in different languages and would not sleep in a certain room. “She would wake up hysterical through the night, at first it was a woman in white long dress,” Nickola says. Her daughter – who is now a teenager - and the lady eventually became friends and would chat to each other, but this ceased when the family moved to a new house. Western suburbs resident Jodie, a fourth-generation psychic, paranormal investigator and spiritual advisor, is a font of information about Melbourne ghosts. Her business, Outback Medium, does space clearings and cleansings of houses with phantom presences. Jodie also works with Paranormal Seekers Victoria, Chasers of the Paranormal and Geelong Gaol Ghost Tours. She says the former prison, which opened in 1853 and closed in 1991, has one of the highest
levels of spiritual activity she has encountered. Jodie names the Clarkefield Coach and Horses Inn near Sunbury, a bluestone hotel built in 1857, as another highly-haunted site. The hotel is thought to be haunted by several spirits, including a Chinese man who died in the stables after a fight, an Irishman who was shot nearby and a young girl seen crying in the toilets. Jodie says that in Wyndham, the most common places where she has encountered ghosts – apart from private homes – were the Werribee Mansion, Point Cook RAAF base, Point Cook Homestead, the bridge on Duncans Road crossing over the freeway to Werribee South and The Racecourse Hotel. “Over the years I have had to go and do some investigations in people’s homes, due to the amount of activity in the Werribee area,” she says. “I quite often will walk into a place, and I can feel the history of what has happened in Werribee.” Jodie says that her advice to anyone
concerned about, but not threatened by, ghostly activity at their home was to ask the spirit kindly to leave. “If they are comfortable with the spirit, tell them that they are welcome to stay if they don’t bother them,” Jodie says. “We all have passed loved ones that hang around us protecting and guiding us.” Jodie says if the activity was ongoing and involved something like objects moving around, that the property might need to be cleansed and “saged” by an expert in the paranormal field. “I wouldn’t recommend you do this on your own, if you don’t know what you are doing as you could accidentally make things worse or even aggravate the spirit more,” she says . Life returns to Watton Street People flocked to Watton Street in Werribee’s town centre after the state’s COVID-19 lockdown ended at midnight last Thursday. On Friday, traders sold clothing and goods outside the front of their stores, as mandated by the state government’s continuing pandemic restrictions. Socially-distanced queues formed outside barbershops and hairdressing salons, while cafes, pubs and restaurants welcomed back sit-down diners for the first time in months. Zoo’s primates enjoy bloomin’ tasty spring treats
Spring has stirred up seasonal treats at Werribee Open Range Zoo, with its resident troop of Vervet monkeys finding one particular wattle blossom absolutely irresistible. While in bloom, zookeepers are hanging whole branches of the flowering native throughout the monkeys’ habitat to encourage their natural foraging behaviours. African River Trail keeper Kristin Garcia said that, while the vibrant yellow colour is alluring for the Vervet troop, it’s the taste that appeals to them most. “This Acacia species is so irresistible to our monkeys because it’s high in sugar, resembling something like a naturally occurring fairy floss,” Ms Garcia said. As with any sugary treat, the wattle is provided in moderation and offered occasionally amongst a rotating daily schedule of food-based, sensory and physical enrichments. “We provide different enrichment items 12 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 27 October, 2021
every single day,” Ms Garcia said. “These blossoms are only available for a short while in late winter and spring. So, it’s a great opportunity for us to offer them something new and novel, and something we know that they will love. “We try to replicate food items and experiences that the Vervet monkeys could come across in the wild environment. In this case, wattle replicates endemic acacia species that exist throughout Africa.” Ancient Acacia was prolific across the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana, which is why numerous sub-species are also found in Africa, South America and India. Much of Vervet monkey habitat overlaps with the Acacia woodlands of Eastern Africa. Vervet monkey populations are adaptable and fairly widespread. However, the species is now absent from large areas of their original geographic range. Human-impacted habitat destruction is a continuing threat, causing fragmentation of smaller, vulnerable populations. Werribee Open Range Zoo reopened to the public on Tuesday 26 October. Complexion protection: ensuring summer sun safety As we approach the warmer months and nicer weather, we must remember the importance of sun safety. With one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, around 2000 Australians die each year from what is often a very preventable disease. The sun produces three types of energy: visible light (which we see as sunlight), infrared radiation (which we feel as heat) and ultraviolet or UV radiation (which we cannot see or feel). Skin cancer occurs when skin cells become damaged, often by overexposure to UV rays from the sun. Even on cool or overcast days, the UV index may be high and can cause damage to your skin. It’s important to take precautions and protect yourself from the sun when the UV level is three or above. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, both known as keratinocyte cancers, and melanoma. Keratinocyte cancers are much more common in men, with almost double the amount of incidence in men compared to women. The risk of developing skin cancer increases as we age. Exacerbating circumstances include being sunburnt, tanning or using solariums. These all contribute to damage to skin cells and can be extremely dangerous. Sun exposure that doesn’t result in a burn can still damage your skin and increase your risk of developing skin cancer. If skin is darkening in the sun, it is a sign of skin cells in trauma, even in the absence of redness or peeling. In Australia, one in eight adults and one in five teens are sunburnt on an average summer weekend. Unless your skin is naturally darker, suntans indicate that your skin has been damaged by UV radiation, which will lead to wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, sagging and discoloration. Despite this, people with naturally darker skin

are certainly also susceptible to developing skin cancer, however it is true that some people may be more vulnerable to damage from the sun. If you have freckles, light coloured hair or fair skin, you should be extra wary of protecting yourself. It’s important to check your skin regularly for any changes. Become familiar with any freckles or moles you may already have, and keep an eye out for any changes or new spots. Any crusty spots that bleed or don’t heal, new spots, freckles or moles that change in colour, shape or thickness over a period, and any small lumps that you weren’t originally aware of are all extremely important to look for. If you notice any changes to your skin, make an appointment with your GP or dermatologist, who can assess and treat it if required. Your GP or dermatologist can also conduct checks for you, as well as a variety of other services. The sooner a skin cancer is identified, the
sooner it can be treated and better your chance of recovery and even survival. If detected early, most skin cancers are successfully treated. UV radiation levels are usually at their highest in the middle of the day, so be extra cautious if outside. Most Australians will get enough vitamin D from just a few minutes of sun exposure when the UV index is three or above, so there is little need for concern about deficiency. There are a variety of ways to ensure you are protected from too much sun exposure. When the UV index is at a level of 3 or above, the Cancer Council recommends a combination of sun protection measures. Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much of your skin as possible. Slop on a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of at least SPF30, ensuring you apply 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours thereafter.

Slap on a hat - preferably one that protects your neck, ears, face and head. Seek shade when the sun is out. When protected by other measures, some sun exposure is acceptable, but extended time even when protected can still do damage. Slide on some sunglasses - Australian standards for eye protection suggests you should choose a pair of sunglasses that are category two or higher. The Cancer Council recommends a pump bottle or tube of sunscreen as opposed to aerosol sunscreens as aerosols are difficult to apply correctly. MacKillop College celebrates belated 50th anniversary MacKillop College has been preparing to finally open the College gates once again, after another lockdown and several months of doing its best to protect staff, students and community. It has been a humbling reminder of the resilience and adaptability required when working together towards a greater good. The return to relative freedoms seems to bring with it a need to reflect on the past two years. As a community, and a school, coming together as people has always been a fundamental part of what MacKillop does. The assemblies, the sport, the musical performances, the classroom – these are all staples of the industry and experience within the education of MacKillop’s students. 2020 and 2021 served to turn it all on its head. On a global scale, the entire method of teaching and learning has been thrown into uncertainty and the education industry has needed to adapt. Face-to-face interactions, practical elements to classes, excursions and invited guests all became unreliable resources, with technology such as Zoom and the flexibility to move from the tangible classroom to a virtual one suddenly became a requirement. Each lockdown brought separation from friends, family and peers. COVID-19 arose in 2019, however, and it is there this reflection begins. In 2019, MacKillop College was happily working towards its anniversary year, putting a complicated network of events and ideas into action as it prepared to show the community the school, its beginnings and its achievements. The college reached out to students, teachers and staff, past and present, to assist in the creation of a comprehensive history of the first 50 years of MacKillop, and anecdotally revisited all the elements that helped to shape the College grounds and culture today. From small beginnings, as a portable classroom in the middle of cabbage patches,

through to the start of the most recent school refurbishment, MacKillop College has adapted to the needs of students, community and social environment. The college’s anniversary year may not have gone to plan, but the school community is so proud of the strength, resilience and faith of
its members. These past two years have been challenging, but MacKillop College has shown its ability to navigate the balance between keeping staff and students safe and well, while also keeping the quality of education as high as possible. Road safety coming out of COVID-19 lockdown As the state gradually opens up and COVID restrictions are being eased across Victoria, travel by road will increase. Road users are reminded that as we come out of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions care should be taken not to bring back bad habits while driving. Over the Melbourne Cup long weekend, Victoria Police will be out in force conducting Operation Furlong which runs from Friday, October 29 to Tuesday, November 2. Road Policing Advisor, Sergeant Marty Wallace, says Operation Furlong will be conducted throughout Victoria by all operational police in all police areas during the five days, using all available personnel from local highway patrol units, general duties police and other police units. Sergeant Wallace says the Melbourne Cup long weekend provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments and it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions he says. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed; • Driver distraction; • Restraint non-compliance; • Fatigue; and • Impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug) Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt/child restraints and make sure you are well rested. Speed cameras will be rostered in known high collision locations.

“Fatigue is one of the major causes of loss of lives on Victorian roads,” Sergeant Wallace says. “Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired.” Road trauma isn’t just about the lives that are lost – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to
deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major freeways and highways throughout the state. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings says it has been demonstrated time after time that speed
is a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face,” he says. Mr Giddings says the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Furlong Campaign for the Melbourne Cup long weekend would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

By Alesha Capone Demand for birthing suites at Werribee Mercy Hospital has reached capacity. The hospital welcomed 3833 babies in 2020, slightly lower than the 3888 babies delivered there in 2019. Health services chief executive Jason Payne said Werribee Mercy Hospital’s birthing numbers had remained steady over the past two years because the birthing suites were unable to accommodate any more expectant mums. He said some pregnant women within the Werribee Mercy Hospital catchment are
being forced to use services at public hospitals outside the area. “The demand exists for Werribee Mercy Hospital to deliver more babies locally but this cannot occur without expanded facilities,” Mr Payne said. “It would be preferable that local families had access to more of the best high quality and safe public birthing services at Werribee Mercy Hospital, so they don’t have to travel.” Mr Payne said planning was under way to boost the capacity of the birthing suites. “A third stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is currently in the final stages of planning, will involve the creation of more
birthing suites, additional post-natal beds, and other ante and post-natal facilities, accompanied by additional midwifery and nursing staff. “Based on demand for existing maternity services, it is projected that Werribee Mercy Hospital would be well placed to meet an anticipated increase in demand of up to 30 per cent more babies in the western metro area.” Mr Payne said Mercy Health has been working with the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and the Department of Health and Human Services since 2016 to prepare for the future needs of Werribee Mercy.
In November’s state budget, $4.8 million was allocated to finalise planning for the third stage of the hospital’s development. “We have acknowledged publicly the funding was a clear sign the voices of the people of the west of Melbourne are being heard and government is committed to meeting a major upgrade,” Mr Payne said. Mercy Health Group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s construction required $300 million in funding “to ensure the people of Wyndham receive the level and quality of health services they deserve and need”.

Hanson makes Werribee history Matt Hanson has made history becoming the first Werribee player to win four Bruce Montgomery Trophy best and fairest awards. Hanson’s triumph was announced via a virtual awards presentation on Thursday night after he polled 44 votes to claim Werribee’s top honour for 2021. Hanson was tied alongside Travis Robertson, who has three Werribee best and fairest awards, but Hanson now stands alone at the top of the list for the club’s most prestigious honour. This year’s best and fairest runner-up was Shaun Mannagh, who polled 36 votes in his first season with the club. The forward-mid was two votes clear of third-place finisher Jack Henderson (34) with forward Hudson Garoni (32) and veteran ruckman Matt Lobbe (31) rounding out the top five. Hanson’s previous Bruce Montogomery Trophy wins came in consecutive years, from 2015-2017. Injury limited him to just five games in 2018 and 14 in 2019, but the 26 year-old was fully fit and back to his best in 2021 playing all nine matches during this year’s COVID-affected season. He averaged a career-high 28.6 disposals per game, along with 4.6 marks and 5.1 tackles while leading the team in clearances (62) and inside 50s (54). Hanson said it was a huge privilege to be awarded a fourth Bruce Montgomery Trophy. “It’s a massive honour, this one might have a little asterisk beside it being only nine games but yeah it’s incredible to win this award again,” he said. “I thought I was pretty consistent with my form, there’s obviously a lot of help going

around in that midfield with some handy players there like (Tom) Gribble, Lobba (Lobbe) and Brewy (Dom Brew). “I’m very lucky to be at this club, it’s a very loyal club and I’m just thankful for all the support they’ve provided not only to me, but all the players and staff.” For Hanson, adding to the excitement of another Bruce Montogomery Trophy win is a personal milestone as he and partner Kat are
set to welcome their first child in the coming weeks. After missing this year’s opening round clash against Collingwood, 2021 Bruce Montogomery Trophy runner-up Shaun Mannagh took little time to announce himself as a Werribee player. After signing with the club for 2020 and waiting more than a year to pull on the Big W, Mannagh was the club’s best player in his
round 2 debut gathering 25 disposals against Williamstown. Over the remaining seven games of 2021, the 24 year-old collected 20 or more disposals on three occasions while kicking multiple goals in five outings to end the campaign with 15 majors. Mannagh also received this year’s Trainers and Property awards voted on by the medical training staff and the club’s property volunteers respectively. Several other players claimed multiple honours including Jack Henderson, who along with his best-ever finish (3rd) in a Werribee best and fairest count, collected the 2021 Coaches Award. Midfield’s Dom Brew added another Most Courageous Player Award and was also voted the Players’ Player for this season. Max Spencer, who will depart the club and return home to Queensland this offseason, was named the Best Defensive Player, with fellow defender Jesse Clark awarded Best First Year Player honours after an impressive debut season. Rising forward Hudson Garoni was named the Most Improved Player after announcing himself as one of the competition’s most promising key position prospects. Additionally, captain Michael Sodomaco received Werribee Life Membership after notching his 100th game for the club in early 2021. Sodomaco who has been at the club since 2011 reached triple figures in round three with the team enjoying an 81-point victory over Richmond. Club chaplin Andrew Seedhom was the recipient of the Ray Smith Club Person Award for his volunteer contributions to the team.
Nagpal is bowling up a bright future on the field Holly Nagpal is a quietly spoken, yet fiercely determined 15-year-old who has an amazing passion for cricket. Her passion was born from her parents, Nick and Sangeeta, and her younger brother Harrith. “I tried many sports as a young person growing up but from the moment I picked up a cricket bat, something inside me just clicked,” she said. “My family comes from India, where cricket is a religion. My father is my number one supporter and coach. He has been with me since I first picked up a bat.” At the age of nine, Nagpal joined her younger brother’s cricket club, Burnside-Springs United. She quickly fell made new friends and learned how to play the game. “I loved the challenges our coaches set me to improve.” Nagpal, who is a medium fast bowler, won the coach’s award in her first season and in her words which made her even more motivated. “It is the beauty in the run up and the action of bowling that I love about becoming a bowler. “I am tested a lot more with my batting, but I am up for the challenge.” Nagpal made her first representative side in her second season of competitive cricket. She represented the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association in an under-12’s tournament. So successful was her debut in representative cricket, Nagpal has continued to be selected in representative teams from the Youth Premier League under-14’s with the Western Spirit to the Youth Super Series under-14’s with the Melbourne Renegades. In 2018-19, Nagpal was selected in the School Sports Victoria under-12 team that travelled to Western Australia, with her team finishing third. Nagpal’s bowling statistics are impressive. team at Burnside Springs United. She made her women’s cricket debut with Sydenham-Hillside, before moving to Victorian Premier Cricket club Essendon Maribyrnong Park Ladies Her best figures came in her first season with EMP taking 5-20 from nine overs playing in their second XI. Nagpal was selected in the Victorian team for the under-15 national championships when she was 12 years old. “My favourite player is Steve Smith but I closely role model Australian players, Molly Strano, Georgia Wareham and Elyse Villani
who all play for Essendon Maribyrnong Park Ladies Cricket Club. “I not only watch what they do on the ground but what they do off it to prepare to be the best they can. I was lucky enough to be selected in the first XI and played a few games with them. “What a better way to do it than work and practice hard as I watch these amazing role models close up. My aim is to represent Australia one day.” Nagpal has a very mature approach to her sport, one that has no doubt been moulded by her family, her coaches, and the Maribyrnong Sports Academy (MSA) where she has been on
a sporting and accelerated learning scholarship since year seven. A typical week during cricket season includes strength and conditioning training three times a week and these sessions can also include meetings with the nutritionist and sports psychologist. The number of cricket training sessions a week depends on what time of the year it is. “We work with medium weights to improve our core strength, upper and lower bodies,” she said. “We work on resistance type training to improve our power base. Conditioning sessions also include interval running and sprint sessions.” However, it hasn’t all been plain sailing for Nagpal, with a stress fracture in her shin causing her to miss games. She urges all young athletes to be open and honest with coaches, doctors and family about how you are feeling. This year Nagpal has been selected in the Cricket Victoria under-16 female emerging player program. While her passion for cricket is infectious, her focus is purely on learning her craft in a very process-oriented manner. “Every time I pick up a ball or a bat, I learn something about myself that I can use to improve my skills. My school work is equally important to me.” Nagpal is the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club, October Don Deeble Sports Star Award winner. Her award is sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, Strathmore Community Bank and the Deer Park Club.
