Murals of colourful creatures painted on water tanks at the Werribee Bowls Club has proved a hit with the community. Steve Weston, who is on the club’s managing board of directors, said the idea for the project came about after the historic water tower in Werribee was transformed into a public artwork a few years ago. Local artist Kurt Zincke has created the mural at the bowls club, with the concept inspired by the nearby Werribee River and wildlife. A bee, fish, platypus and lorikeet have been painted so far, with plans for other animals and trees to soon be painted on other water tanks and a wall. Mr Weston said people walking past the bowls club have been stopping to take photos of the art. “Even in the short time it’s been up, there have been so many people saying: ‘How fantastic does it look?’” he said. Within three days of the club posting photos of the water tanks online, they had 700 views and 150 engagements on social media. Mr Weston said the club hoped to become part of the Werribee Art Trail. Jobs uproar at Wyndham Wyndham council has been labelled as “unconscionable” for a plan which could see eight employees and contractors let go in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Australian Services Union (ASU) said that six council employees, including three carpenters who live in Wyndham, recently found out they could be made redundant under a structural review. The council is also exploring contracting its facility management services.

The Fair Work Commission last week supported the council’s decision to launch an expression of interest (EOI) process. ASU secretary Lisa Darmanin said the union has written to all Wyndham councillors and local MPs about the council’s plan “to tender out local jobs”. “Every job matters and for Wyndham to sack hard-working local residents during a global pandemic is unconscionable,” she said. “When an organisation says local jobs are important, as Wyndham has, it needs to be backed up with decisions that prioritise local

employment.” But council’s city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the EOI process “will in no way impact the work currently undertaken by staff within the facilities team”. Separately, last year Wyndham city began a review of the structure of its facilities area, he said. “This review is ongoing and is a separate issue to the contracting out of facilities management services.” Mr Thorpe said the council needed to review how it maintained facilities as the

city’s population grows. “Wyndham city is undergoing rapid growth,” Mr Thorpe said. “We currently service 168 Council-owned or managed buildings. “By 2030, council will be responsible for maintaining nearly 230 buildings across the municipality. “With that growth, we need to continually look at the way in which we deliver and maintain our properties, to ensure we continue to deliver the best possible value for ratepayers.”

Outreach vax clinic drives jabs By Alesha Capone An outreach COVID-19 vaccination program aimed at culturally diverse residents of the west has seen more than 600 people inoculated in under a month. The service, which is being delivered by Western Health in collaboration with Wyndham council, began in September with a vaccine session at the Virgin Mary Mosque in Hoppers Crossing. Operations manager of the west metro COVID-19 Vaccination Program, Suzie

Ristevski, said her team has been working directly with communities to deliver vaccinations to people who cannot otherwise access a Western Health vaccination hub. “The outreach service operates as a flexible model, which may involve temporary site set up in a vaccination space or a mobile service,” she said. “We have been working collaboratively with Wyndham city council to identify and accommodate culturally diverse groups in the community that would not otherwise proactively present for vaccination.” Ms Ristevski said Western Health has also

engaged with cultural and religious leaders. A total of 150 people were vaccinated at the Virgin Mary Mosque event last month, while 110 members of the Somali community were vaccinated at the Tarneit Soccer Club on another day. She said the outreach service, which has also been visiting schools, has been well received by local councils and community groups. “We are absolutely thrilled that we can offer this service to such a broad range of culturally diverse backgrounds across municipalities across the western region of Melbourne and

provide many of them with access to the COVID-19 vaccine,” Ms Ristevski said. “The services had also closed a significant gap in vaccination uptake numbers within the community and has received overwhelming positive feedback from vaccine recipients and regarding the convenience of access to COVID-19 vaccination. The outreach services complement the already terrific, high-standard vaccination service provided by Western Health in our vaccination hubs in Sunshine, Melbourne Showgrounds, Melton and Eagle Stadium at Wyndham.”

A ribbeting census marks 20 years Hoppers Crossing resident Sonya Findlow is encouraging Wyndham residents to hop on board for this year’s Frog Census. The annual community-based frog monitoring program, managed by Melbourne Water, is celebrating its twentieth anniversary in 2021. The census uses data submitted by volunteers, aka “citizen scientists”, to help Melbourne Water improve the health of the city’s frog populations, protect frog habitat areas and improve waterway health. More than 4000 people use the Frog Census App to record frogs in their local areas each spring. Mrs Findlow said that she and her sons

Braydon, 16, and Rhys, 13, usually observe a Growling Grass Frog in their garden most days. She has submitted photos and footage of the frog, which belongs to an endangered species, to Melbourne Water. Mrs Findlow said her house’s backyard has a pond, water bowls for wildlife and mostly indigenous plants. “Being able to photograph frogs and see what they look like close-up and in real life, is really great,” she said. “Hearing and seeing the frogs, it is good to know you help make a safe place for them.” Mrs Findlow said her family has long been interested in wildlife and conservation,

belonging to the Friends of Skeleton Creek for around 16 years. She has shared word of the Frog Census among other members of the group, when they could host planting events outside of COVID restrictions. Wyndham is still leading the way on COVID-19 vaccinations in the west. Figures released by the federal government on Monday show that more than 95 per cent of Wyndham residents aged 15 and above have had at least one vaccine. A total of 68.6 per cent of residents have had two jabs. Across the rest of the western suburbs, 91.7 per cent of residents in the municipality of Melton have been vaccinated once or more. More than 86.6 per cent of Hobsons Bay residents have been vaccinated, 86.3 per cent of Brimbank residents and 85.9 per cent of Moonee Valley residents. However, Maribyrong has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the state, with 80.8 per cent of residents vaccinated. Locally, the 3029 postcode has 856 residents with COVID, along with 559 residents of the 3030 postcode and 192 people from the 3024 postcode. Another 34 residents in Williams Landing and seven people in Little River have coronavirus. Federal figures show that as of October 15, there were three active cases of COVID diagnosed in staff at Glendale Aged Care in Werribee and two among staff at Japara Turgo Place in Newport. The state government announced a $54.5 million Outdoor Economy Package on Monday to help support businesses setting up for street trading and for councils to provide related infrastructure and support. A $14.5 million COVIDSafe Outdoor Activation Voucher Program was also announced.

Bay Trail extension on the way By Benjamin Millar Work on the missing link between Williamstown and Point Cook will begin next year with a new trail path to be built along the coast. The Bay Trail will soon be connected between Point Cook Coastal Park and Sanctuary Lakes, giving cyclists and pedestrians a safe new way to enjoy the bay’s coastline. Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio last week announced the new project will extend

the popular shared-use path from Point Gellibrand at Williamstown to Point Cook Coastal Park.

Parks Victoria and consultants GHD are working together to identify the most appropriate design options and concepts for the trail, which will be funded under the $21 million Urban Parks Active Wellbeing Program. Ms D’Ambrosio said environmental assessments will take place before any works begin, to ensure the Cheetham Wetlands are protected. “It’s exciting that cyclists and pedestrians will soon be able to continue their journey along the Bay Trail, enjoying the facilities and

views from Point Cook Coastal Park,” she said. “The Urban Parks Active Wellbeing Program is more important than ever – creating improved open spaces so people can spend time in nature.” The program is delivering upgrades to 21 parks across Melbourne, including new picnic shelters and tables, refurbished or upgraded toilets and electric barbecues, as well as playground equipment and more accessible pathways. Parks Victoria expects to start works on the trail extension next year.

Danni said that during the school holidays and lockdown, Griffyn has started writing his own books. “It’s his dream to meet Andy and Terry and one day publish his own book,” she said. “He’s even starting using bookcreator.com and writing and designing his own books.” Danni said she completed the MS Readathon while she was at school and had won an encyclopedia book about animals. Griffyn loves reading the encyclopedia for more than an hour each night, so he was inspired to take part in the MS Readathon too. For his achievement of raising more than $500, Griffyn has been made part of the MS Readathon’s 2021 Hall of Fame. He has also been given an MS T-shirt, book bag and certificates. Seven-year-old Griffyn has accomplished the impressive feat of reading 100 books in just over four weeks. The young Wyndham resident read all of the books – which were novels with chapters, not picture books – for the MS Readathon. The annual event raises funds for Multiple Sclerosis Australia, known as MS Australia, a charity focused on research and advocacy for people living with the illness. Although Griffyn hoped to raise $500 for MS Australia, he ended up raising more than double this. Family and friends from Melbourne, Queensland and the United Kingdom donated to the cause and helped Griffyn to raise a total of $1148. Griffyn said he was “super excited” to read so many books and happy to have raised such a high amount of money. His proud mother Danni said her son loved reading because he learned new words, with

High harm crime hurts Wyndham More than 1200 people have become victims of high harm crimes such as serious assaults, aggravated burglaries and rapes in Wyndham across 12 months. Victoria Police defines high harm crimes as those involving the loss of life or resulting in life-long and severe physical, mental and emotional harm. Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency shows Melbourne recorded the most high harm crime victims in Victoria during the 2020-21 financial year, with 2015 individuals affected, followed by Greater Geelong with 1489 victims and Casey with 1436 victims.

Wyndham and Hume both recorded the equal fourth-highest rate of high harm victims, with 1253 individuals each. Four people were murdered in Wyndham and 621 people were subjected to serious assaults, with more than half of these related to family violence. There was also 163 aggravated burglary victims and 128 aggravated robbery victims in Wyndham. An additional 142 people were indecently assaulted and 109 people raped. More than 44 per cent of the indecent assaults were connected to family violence and almost half of the rapes.

As well, Wyndham recorded 1768 victims of “medium harm” crime such as common assault and threatening behaviour. Almost 70 per cent of the 988 common assaults committed in Wyndham related to family violence. Wyndham Local Area Commander, acting Inspector Steve Hayes, said the statistics showed high harm offences have reduced in the area over the last 12 months. “The reduction in these types of crime can be attributed to both the coronavirus pandemic and associated restrictions, as well as ongoing operations targeting serious and

violent crimes,” he said. Geet’s drive to assist Tarneit woman Geetanjali (Geet) Gaba says that her passion is helping other people. Ms Gaba is founder and president of the not-for-profit Australian Multicultural Women Association (AMWA) and also hosts a weekly show on A1 TV. Ms Gaba said AMWA aims to help groups and multicultural women with free assistance on topics such as building a career, starting a business, interviews and resumes. The association, which is run by Ms Gaba along with volunteers from Australian, Indian and Pakistani backgrounds, is also connected to registered training organisations. AMWA also directs women experiencing family violence to support services. Ms Gaba that she grew up watching her father, a community support worker who also runs a newspaper in India, helping other people. She said that in her owner career as a trainer,

she often assisted students with questions on the matters that AMWA helps with. “I love helping people, to be very frank it is my passion,” she said. Ms Gaba that she began hosting her community support program, Let’s Do It With Geet, last year. The show, which airs at 8.30pm on Tuesdays, has become a “real hit” on A1 TV, a south-Asian community channel available on satellite, social media, YouTube and an app. The channel has more than 108,000 followers on Facebook. Ms Gaba said that at the moment, the show was providing information about COVID-19 to its viewers. “At the moment we are fully focusing on getting back to normal,” she said. The famous Manor Lakes Halloween house is returning this year to raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation (SCF). For the past five years, husband and wife Andrew Price and Maria Lodola-Price have decked out their Dalrymple Boulevard home in spectacular and spooky style to raise funds for the SCF. In 2019, they hosted an event with food trucks and a local dance school performed a flash mob to Thriller by Michael Jackson. Ms Lodola-Price said that after COVID forced them to change their plans in 2020, they still managed to raise more than $5000 for the SCF by inviting residents to participate in a host of online Halloween-themed activities. The photo competitions for best-decorated local house, and best-costumed family and pet, are running again this year, along with raffles and a colouring contest. The Manor Lakes Estate will donate money to the SCF for each entry that members of the

public submit to the competitions. Ms Lodola-Price said they have also launched an augmented-reality treasure hunt similar to Pokemon GO. Participants can download the ARLOOPA app to their phones in order to find Halloween characters in different locations across Manor Lakes. Seventeen councils across the nation, including Wyndham, have called on the federal government to commit to strong action on climate change, ahead of the United Nations Climate Conference in November. The councils have joined 105 signatories in the Better Futures Australia (BFA) Declaration, requesting the federal government ensure the nation is on track for a “climate-resilient zero emissions future” in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The agreement, an international treaty on climate change adopted in 2015, aims to limit global warming to below two degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

Baby, you’re a United member About 30 babies born at Werribee Mercy Hospital last week have been gifted with membership to the Western United Football Club (WUFC). The club announced that infants born on Thursday, October 14 would all be offered the opportunity to join the “green and black family” through free baby memberships. WUFC head coach John Aloisi, Olympians Lachlan Wales and Dylan Pierias, and A-League stars Ryan Scott and Ben Garuccio also sent video messages of congratulations to the new parents.

Western United chairman Jason Sourasis welcomed the newest members to the club. “As a father to two girls under the age of three, I know the joy that the birth of a baby brings,” he said. “I would like to congratulate the new parents and wish them and their babies all the best. “Our mission at Western United is for every baby born in the west to be born into the green and black. “I’m very passionate about geographical tribalism and the togetherness that being part

of a football club brings. “As we start the new season, I want to put the call out to everyone in the west to jump on board the green and black and come with us as we build the future of Australian football.” Thousands of United fans have already renewed their memberships for the season that is set to kick off on November 20. Western United will take on Melbourne Victory at the GMHBA Stadium in Geelong for its first home game of the season. Crowds for the match are expected to be at a 5000 person capacity, with the game to be

one of the first live sporting matches to host a crowd outside of the Spring Carnival. Budding young authors Two talented young writers have been named as winners in the 2021 Rotary Centenary Year Peace Essay competition. Grade five and six pupils were invited to enter a written piece in the competition, centred on the theme Peace in The Community. Children from across Victoria and New South Wales submitted entries. The Rotary Club of Wyndham Harbour recently hosted a ceremony on Zoom for the award winners. Prince, the pupil of a school in Hay, NSW placed first. Eleven year-old Lithuli, a pupil of Iramoo Primary School in Wyndham Vale, came second. Third place went to Yi Han Cheok, 10, who attends Point Cook P-9 College. Lithuli said her essay was about a mean girl, who realises she needs to change for the better. It took her around two days, including getting through some temporary writer’s

block, to pen the work. Lithuli said that upon finding out she had placed second, she did not really believe the news at first. “I was shocked, happy, excited and proud,” she said. Yi Han said she was “ecstatic” to win third place with her essay. “My essay was about the lack of peace in the community and how we can improve it in the future,” she said. “What I loved about writing my essay was the fact that I could have a voice in the world to make a difference. “I could express my opinions on peace in the community, that could perhaps inspire change in others.” The Rotary essay competition will be held again next year. Insight into paramedic’s world By Alesha Capone Ambulance Victoria paramedic Taz Kumar said that people in his profession “learn to expect the unexpected” with every day on the job being different. Mr Kumar, who lives in the Jubilee area of Wyndham Vale, might look familiar – he was a regular in seasons one through three of the Channel Nine show Paramedics. He said being followed by camera crews was unusual at first, but he became used them. Mr Kumar said the show provided viewers with a valuable insight into what occurs within an ambulance van during medical emergencies. One result of appearing on the show is that Mr Kumar is often recognised in public, with fans requesting selfies. Mr Kumar migrated from India to Australia 21 years ago. Before coming here, he studied for more than six years to work as a physician’s assistant in the emergency departments of Indian hospitals. Mr Kumar said Delhi did not have paramedics during his time there, but his long-term ambition was to become an ambulance officer in Australia. He said that most paramedics, himself included, did not choose the profession for money or recognition, but rather the ability to help people with anything from pain relief to resuscitating a patient after a heart attack. “I think the most important thing about this job, whether you create a small or big difference, is that your work is always appreciated,” Mr Kumar said. “The relief and hope you see on people’s faces is something you cannot buy with money.” He said being approached by people while out and about, who thanked him for saving

their lives – or, in one case, helping to deliver a baby in a driveway – was a highlight of being a paramedic. Mr Kumar said that seeing a car crash victim make a full recovery after paramedics “worked on her for a long time” was another highlight. The paramedics conducted a full assessment of the man, who started to calm down. The man mentioned to Mr Kumar and the others that he was upset due to losing his TV remote.

“We searched the house and found the remote had slipped under his recliner chair,” Mr Kumar said. “He said: ‘Thank God, you saved my life’.” On a more serious note, Mr Kumar said that the COVID-19 pandemic has placed “immense” pressure on all medical and allied health staff. He said paramedics have been taking hundreds of COVID-positive patients to hospitals across Melbourne every week. “This is not a nine-to-five job, this is a 24-hour battle,” he said. More than 95 per cent of Ambulance Victoria staff have chosen to be vaccinated against the virus. “I would like to see everyone get vaccinated

as quickly as possible, so we can have life back to what it was like before the pandemic,” Mr Kumar said “We are all in this together.” Mr Kumar said it was also important for community members to only call triple-0 when faced with a genuine medical emergency. He said non-emergency calls put even more pressure on paramedics. “It means ambulances aren’t in the community for emergencies when they are needed,” he said. For less-urgent health needs, it is recommended people call their GP, a pharmacist or the Nurse on Call service, which offers free 24/7 medical advice on 1300 60 60 24.

Learning to give back Point Cook resident Thelma says it is heart-warming to help people in her role at Australian Multicultural Community Services (AMCS). Thelma was employed by AMCS almost one year ago, after she completed two short courses offered by the service, which is based in Maidstone. She took a Careers in Aged Care course in order to help her mother-in-law, 74, who began living with her family in 2018. Thelma also studied a Multicultural Leadership Course. AMCS offers six short industry-recognised courses – including Employment Pathways Introduction to MYOB Software, Navigating Microsoft Office and Skills for Work and Study – free to residents of Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Brimbank, Moonee Valley and Melbourne. In order to take a course, residents must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or hold an Australian permanent visa. “The lessons brought me not only knowledge

MY PLACE Werribee’s Suzanne Shaw is a Legatee – a volunteer at Legacy, a charity that cares for the families of Australian Defence Force personnel who have lost their lives or their health as a result of their service. She met her late husband, Fred, while they were both in the navy. She chats with Alesha Capone. How did you first become involved in Legacy? My Fred, my husband, was very unwell for nine years after being diagnosed with a neurological condition. The Werribee RSL was a great strength and support during this time. What do you enjoy about being part of Legacy? I get all the referees sent to me and I make contact with them. My favourite part is going out and meeting with the ladies, hearing their stories and their history is so amazing. I enjoy the warmth and connection, just connecting with them and hearing stories of the places they have been and what they have done in the past. There are lots of tears and laughter, it can be within a month that you contact and meet them. My four children were part of the Legacy Youth Team and provided support to other young people. And what did you enjoy about being in the navy? Well, I met my future husband. It was also the camaraderie of the people I lived and worked with. It was quite an experience, I was a country girl and a group of ladies – there were 20 in our class from all over Australia – joined in 1974 and trained at Cerberus. I worked in the clothing store and then transferred to HMAS Penguin in Balmoral, New South Wales. I then transferred to Port Melbourne HMAS Lonsdale and I was discharged upon marriage. What was working at HMAS Lonsdale like? The ships would all dock and they would come to Lonsdale for social events, we had French,

Japanese and American visitors. I think I had the best job of everyone, whenever anyone came they had to come and get a uniform, so I got to meet them all. Was that also how you met Fred? They posted Fred back to Lonsdale and he came into the store. We realised we had known each other a few years earlier and six months later we were married. After a couple of weeks, he proposed. How would you describe Legacy for someone who does not know about the organisation? It’s just a fantastic organisation that supports so many families and no-one knows when they need that support. If there is a need for it, Legacy will provide for that need. There is no cost to families and we rely on donations from people to provide this support. Most people have someone who they know, who has been in the defence force. I don’t think some people realise the dedication and committee people give to the country we love, Australia. We support younger families and older widows, grandchildren too. We also work with RSLs. Would you like to add anything else? When we are permitted by COVID restrictions, the Werribee branch of the Legacy Widows Club meets on the second Monday of the month at 10am, at the Werribee RSL Sub-branch. Afghan refugees seek homes AMES Australia has appealed for anyone with a rental property in Wyndham or St Albans to open their hearts to refugees from Afghanistan. The not-for-profit organisation provides English training, employment services, community engagement and settlement support to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. AMES spokesperson Laurie Nowell said that almost 2000 Afghan refugees have arrived in Victoria, as a result of the airlift out of Kabul in August. Australia is taking in Afghan refugees under its national humanitarian visa program. Mr Nowell said that AMES was assisting many of the Afghan

refugees in Victoria searching for permanent rental housing. “They have come out of hotel quarantine and are being housed in short-term accommodation – mostly units that would normally be used by international students,” he said. “About 15-20 per cent of them are seeking to settle in the west around Werribee and Wyndham and St Albans, where there are already established communities of Afghanis. “The majority are families – some of them up to 10 people – so they are seeking large-ish family homes.” Mr Nowell said that the COVID pandemic was making it difficult for the refugees to find

rental homes, with the market in the west facing strong demand from tenants at the moment. “There is an added complication because some (of the refugees) do not have full ID documentation – making it more difficult to get a real estate agent to lease a home.” Reza (not his real name), who recently arrived in Melbourne from Afghanistan with his extended family, is hoping to find a rental house in Werribee or nearby. “We are very grateful to have found a safe place in Australia and we want to move into our own home,” Reza said. “My parents and my siblings and I want to live close to Werribee where we have friends

Wyndham council is encouraging neighbours to get to know each other in a COVID-safe way. Wyndham community safety portfolio holder, Cr Susan McIntyre, said October was Community Safety Month. “One of the most effective and rewarding ways to create a safe neighbourhood is simply by looking out for and getting to know your neighbours,” Cr McIntyre said. “While many people have lived in Wyndham their whole lives, there are many people who have only just moved into our growing city. “Let’s focus on and celebrate the regular day-to-day connections we make with our neighbours and all our community members. “This is the best way to foster a safer and more welcoming community.” Cr McIntyre said the council was always looking for ways to form and strengthen community relationships. In August, the council became the first municipality in the state to join Neighbourhood Watch Victoria’s Engage Network. “We ask that you wave and say hello over the fence or on the street to those you see,” Cr McIntyre said. “If you have neighbours that are particularly vulnerable, place a contact card in their letter box so that they can contact you if they need to. “Together we are far stronger than we are alone.”

A needle-phobic faces her fear Star Weekly reporter Michaela Meade has never been a fan of needles. She shares her experience of getting the COVID jab. I’m one of those people who has always dreaded needles. Despised them, even. Get that sharp, pointy thing away from me, please. Logically, I understand that what’s in them is helping me to stay healthy and safe. But emotionally speaking, it’s a really sharp thing being poked into my arm. No, thank you. That’s why I was very surprised to find myself excited when they announced all the developments for a new vaccine last year. The COVID-19 vaccine. This new virus has upheaved a lot of people’s lives over the past 22-plus months. And sadly, it’s taken people’s lives. I count myself as very lucky to have not lost a loved one due to COVID-19. But I read all the stories. I sat in front of my laptop every day last year listening to Premier Daniel Andrews report the amount of cases we had that day, and how many people lost their fight. I isolated myself from friends and family, which was made even harder this year when I moved out of home. I obeyed all the rules, did all the hand washing, and wore the mask required. I still do, because Victoria is still getting this thing under control. And unfortunately, it’s not over. It’s a nasty virus, and being an asthmatic, I don’t want to risk contracting it. So I also waited patiently for the chance to book in for my jab. The pointy needle. That dreaded thing. I’ll have you know that no amount of logic can outweigh the anxiety a needle-phobic person feels when they’re waiting for their name to be called to receive an injection. But I distracted myself with some social

to meet my kitten. I’ll be able to see my dad when he can come down from Sydney, so we can finally celebrate both of our birthdays, plus Father’s Day. But it’s only possible if I get the vaccine. If you’re also needle-phobic, it helps a lot to tell the person that you’re petrified. My nurse, Jane, was very lovely about it. Talked to me throughout, made me laugh, and told me to take a deep breath in – “a little sting

here” – and a deep breath out. And that was it. She gave me a lollipop and I was on my way. I understand being hesitant to get an injection. I also know the frustration of having an appointment snapped out from under you. But please persist. To my fellow needle-phobics: it’s a small, two-second sting, but I promise it’s worth it. Bring on the second dose.

Helping more people access IVF Connolly’s Corner By Tarneit MP, Sarah Connolly Welcome back folks to Connolly’s Corner! Whilst we all continue to do our bit to beat this outbreak and get vaccinated, I thought I’d share with you something deeply personal on a topic that’s close to my heart – the accessibility of IVF treatment and how we’re removing barriers to make treatment more accessible and affordable for everyone. In a local community where so many babies are being born each week, I know for many families in Wyndham, the road to parenthood is not always an easy one. It certainly wasn’t an easy journey for my husband and I – all three of our children were conceived through IVF, with our eldest daughter Viviene stillborn at 37 weeks. Just over 12 years ago we found ourselves on our very own IVF emotional rollercoaster. Back then, infertility wasn’t something widely spoken or known about in our community. Counselling services were available, but not something we readily took up. Looking back now, we should have. Sadly, this is still a common occurrence for so many families right across Victoria for whom the joys of parenthood are only possible through access to IVF treatments. Victoria has a long proud history of supporting IVF research and practice. Going back to the 1970s and 80s, we lead the nation in the research and development of fertility treatment services and saw the first IVF baby in Australia – Candace Reed – born right here in Victoria in 1980. Today, Victoria accounts for 30 per cent of treatments across Australia. Over the last 40 years, we’ve made huge strides in making IVF treatment increasingly accessible to Victorians. The Infertility (Medical Procedures) Act 1984 provided for

the regulation of IVF treatment procedures and the associated human embryo research, the first piece of legislation in the world to

do so. Flash forward 24 years later, and the Bracks government superseded this legislation with the Assisted Reproductive Treatment

Act 2008, which provided a modernised and updated regulatory framework for IVF treatment. More importantly, it began the process of improving outdated barriers that existed for modern would-be families. You see, until 2008, eligibility to undergo IVF treatment in Victoria was only open to heterosexual married couples – an outdated notion that ignored the features of the Australian modern family. This especially ignored the hopes and dreams of LGBTQ couples for whom this process could realise their dreams of having a child of their own, a fact we changed in 2008. In 2018, the Andrews government decided to take another look at our IVF laws, and commissioned a landmark review into the Act. Headed by Michael Gorton AM, the comprehensive report made a staggering 80 recommendations with a goal to make IV more accessible and affordable for more Victorian families. Since being elected to Parliament in 2018, I’ve now had the pleasure of helping to pass three Bills implementing a number of these changes. In 2019, we removed barriers to treatment where women who were separated, but not divorced from their spouse, required their consent to undergo treatment. Last year, we removed an outdated and discriminatory requirement that women seeking to undergo IVF needed to get a police check. Hyundai has a very strong lineup of models in its Kona series - everything from conventional petrol-engined models all the way up to a full electric. This week’s road test review car is the Kona N-Line. It’s a sporty looking vehicle, though without the impressive performance of its big brother the more expensive Kona N Performance. The Kona is sold in a crowded class, with its major competitors being Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3 Mitsubishi ASX and Toyota C-HR.

Driving

The automatic is a continuously variable transmission to maximise performance and minimise petrol consumption. As part of the mid-life makeover the CVT replaced the six-speed conventional auto previously used. Read our opinion of this auto in the Driving section of this road test review.

The CVT automatic has been designed by Hyundai engineers to give it a feeling of having preset ratios, it did jar a little but we soon ceased to notice what was happening under the bonnet. You can sort of use it as a manual by changing ‘gears’ if you feel that way inclined. After trying this we simply left if to do its own thing. There’s less room in rear seat of the Kona than we had expected, meaning I had to move my driving seat forward a couple of notches to provide knee room for anyone behind me. The Koreans have a long history of tuning their cars to suit Australian roads and what we Aussie drivers like in the way of handling and comfort. Kona is obviously not a sports car but does hold on nicely during cornering and gives good feedback through the steering while and your backside. It’s a bit noisy on gravel road and there’s some bump-thump on concrete road joins such as those on our road test section on the M1 motorway between Gold Coast and Brisbane. Fuel consumption during our test period was in the 8 to 10 litres per hundred kilometres in town and suburban driving. It fell to five to six litres per hundred on country and motorway testing. All Hyundais have a five-year/ unlimited-kilometre warranty and a lifetime capped-price-servicing plan.

The updated Hyundai Kona offers a lot of car for a pretty modest price. We feel this update is a worthwhile one and we reckon it should certainly be on your list of cars to be checked out.

Styling Kona is a cross between a hatchback and an SUV in its shape. The protection around the wheels arches adds to the SUV look. The body is stylish without going over the top. We particularly like the interesting front shape with its high-level daytime running lights and the low-slung headlights. The N-Line has a revised front bumper and there are side skirts. Dual exhaust tailpipes provide a tough look to drivers following you. Ground clearance is 170mm which is higher than the typical on-road hatchback but falls well short of the 210mm in real four-wheel drives. That 170mm does add to the business-like appearance.

Interior There’s an upmarket look inside the Kona. We really like the practical dashboard with its large dials and an easy to see 10.5-inch centre display set at the same level as the instruments so you spend minimum time looking away from the road to check it. There’s rather too much black inside for our tastes, but to some extent that’s broken up by the red stitches on the sports seats and the steering wheel.

Infotainment The N-Line has an eight-speaker Harman/ Kardon premium sound system. We found the setup of the speakers is just right and it provides the sort of sound. There are interfaces for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Engines / transmissions The 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine produces 110kW of power and 180Nm of torque, the latter at a pretty high 4500 rpm. Most drivers will seldom go as high as 4500, however there’s reasonable punch below that number.

WRFL awards recognise Wyndham Suns stars Several Wyndham players shone at the Western Region Football League (WRFL)’s senior men’s awards night last week. The awards celebrating “the best of the west” were announced on Thursday, October 14. John Tomelty from the Wyndham Suns took out the division three category, receiving the Ron & Thelma Angwin Medal with 11 votes. Hoppers Crossing player Ryan Kitchen won the division one reserves award on 10 votes.

The division two reserves award went to Tristan Pearce from Point Cook Centrals, who garnered 11 votes. Albanvale’s Dane Thomas took out the division three reserves award with 12 points, followed by Matthew Holmes from the Wyndham Suns and Nick Williams of Tarneit with nine points each. Brock Spiteri from Werribee Districts received an impressive 20 votes to take home the under-18 boys’ division one category.

The under-18 boys’ division two gong went to Kai Logan of Point Cook with 13 votes. Werribee Districts’ president Bart Shaw received the Lindsay Patching Memorial Club Official of the Year award. On the club’s Facebook, a post congratulating Shaw went up after the awards were announced. The post described Shaw as “a terrific leader and a tirelessly hard worker”. The post went on to say: “A massive

congratulations as well to one of our star under-18s Brock Spiteri who won under-18 Division 1 Best and Fairest. “An incredible achievement and thoroughly deserved for a current and future star of the club!” In addition, the post acknowledged Luke Di Mauro from the club’s under-18 division one side, who topped the division’s goal kicking tally with 28 goals across 11 games for the season.

Penaluna’s life honour By Alesha Capone Werribee Football Club’s chief executive Mark Penaluna has been awarded a VFL life membership. Penaluna received the honour during the VFL 2021 awards ceremony last week. Since joining Werribee FC in September 2003, Penaluna has become the longest-serving chief executive of a VFL club. Penaluna said his love of football began at a young age, with his childhood weekends devoted to playing and watching football. His father Jim has been a volunteer and coach with the Port Colts Football Club for 60 years, and was named the club’s best and fairest player in 1958. Penaluna himself is also a life member of the Port Colts. Penaluna said he found out he would receive the VFL life membership at a Werribee FC staff meeting, the day before this year’s AFL grand final. The club’s employees invited Jim to make the announcement at the event, much to Penaluna’s surprise. “Werribee very much reminds me of what Port Melbourne used to be, how the local football club is part of the centre and fabric of the community,” Penaluna said. He said one of the things he was most passionate about at Werribee is the club’s environment of wellbeing and inclusiveness. Under his leadership, Werribee became the first VFL club to employ a full-time community development officer. Penaluna said that Werribee FC has worked alongside other local sports clubs, including

the Werribee tennis and bowls clubs, to help the wider community for many years. Earlier in his career, Penaluna was one of the driving forces behind the $11.75 million Avalon Airport Oval redevelopment. During his tenure at Werribee, Penaluna said he has been proud to see a number of the club’s players drafted into the AFL. “In the past 11 grand finals, Werribee has been associated with 10 in some way or form,” he said. Recently, Penaluna played an instrumental role in securing $975,000 worth of government funding for VFL clubs, to help with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that Werribee FC “has taken a massive hit” during the pandemic. “We lost in excess of $1 million last year,” he said. Penaluna said he wanted to thank the club’s players, staff, volunteers, sponsors and members for their assistance during the pandemic. “From a club point of view, I believe the way people have come together and supported each other, has been great,” he said. Penaluna said that when times were tough, it showed the true determination and devotion of people involved in the club. “Anyone can get a kick when you’re 20 goals up, you learn about people when you’re 10 goals down and there is 10 minutes left in the game, that’s when you see who will stand up,” he said. Back in April, Werribee was able to play a VFL home game against Collingwood when COVID restrictions eased.

“At that game, all this effort the staff, volunteers and I went to last year made it all worthwhile,” Penaluna said. He said that serving as chief executive at a football club was often a “balancing act of people, facilities and financial planning”, with many people keen to have a say on decisions made. Penaluna said it was impossible for anyone to get 100 per cent of their decisions correct all the time, but that most people were “very accepting” once he explained how a decision was in the club’s best interests. Penaluna, who was previously general manager of the Western Region Football League for eight years, also thanked his family for understanding that his job required him to work long hours and not always be at home. Werribee president Martin Carter said the Penaluna’s VFL life membership was well-deserved. “Mark’s longevity in the VFL and at Werribee FC particularly for 18 years is testament to his character, loyalty persistence, respect, honesty and commitment to the cause,” he said. “Mark is a hands-on administrator that has done everything from CEO down to umpire’s escort, there’s nothing he hasn’t done to make sure that Werribee FC was and is in a better place.” In other news, Werribee’s Matt Lobbe and Matt Hanson were last week recognised for outstanding seasons after being selected for the VFL Team of the Year.

Serbian international striker Aleksandar Prijovic will call Western United home after signing a multi-year deal with the club. Prijovic has had a prolific career-to-date across Europe and the Middle East and is expected to add another dimension to Western United’s attack. The 31-year-old has played topflight football in multiple countries, scoring nearly 150 goals in close to 400 professional games across his club career. Ahead of his move to Western United, Prijovic said he is eager to meet his new teammates and get to work ahead of the new season. “I’m very happy to come to Australia and look forward to experiencing new things by playing football in a new country and in a competitive league,” he said. “I know there is lots of quality in the A-League; lots of good players and many good teams and I’m looking forward to competing against them. “I’m confident I can come in and help the team to score goals and win games and hopefully we can challenge for titles in the future. “I’m coming to an ambitious club with big plans and I am motivated to work together with all the players and coaches, and I can’t wait to get started.” Prijovic has made 13 senior appearances for the Serbian national team, including scoring the all-important winner that secured his nations qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Western United head coach John Aloisi praised Prijovic’s continuity at the highest level and said it is a big plus to have the striker coming in with confidence and form on his side. He said the club loved the consistency that Prijovic scores goals regardless of where he plays. “He has played at the highest level for club and country and has impressive pedigree and success, leading the scoring charts in Greece with PAOK and a number of Champions League matches under his belt. “We have strengthened other areas of the squad really well, but we were still looking for another option up front, and we’re really happy to add Aleksandar’s qualities to our side with his goal scoring, aerial prowess and hunger to succeed.” Tara Murray
