Deer Park’s Joan Oliver could have never imagined completing a law degree at the age of 75. Having been the oldest person to ever complete VCE, Ms Oliver last month graduated from Victoria University with a bachelor of laws. Ms Oliver was taken out of school at the age of 13, but had always wanted to complete VCE. A university degree on top of that is a bonus. “I didn’t think it would happen,” she said. “I wanted to do VCE and then I was awarded a scholarship, so I thought let’s see where this goes. I was always interested in the law. I had wanted to be a police officer, but there was a height requirement and I never met it.” Ms Oliver said her favourite subjects were the criminal units, along with wills and estates, but tax and property law were quite bland. She said while she might be an inspiration for many people to look at studying at this age, she doesn’t see what all the fuss is about. And what’s next for Ms Oliver? “Certainly not working as a lawyer,” she said. “I would like to volunteer in a community organisation. “One of my lecturers pointed out that you can’t practice until you have done your practical lawyer training. I’m tossing up whether to do it. If my lecturer has her way, I’ll be doing it.”

High-density showdown A group of Keilor Downs residents are joining forces to try and stop a high-density housing development being built in the area. Keilor Downs Residents Against High Density Housing has formed in recent days, with more than 200 people joining the group. The residents are objecting to Baptcare Affordable Housing’s development at 21a Copernicus Way, Keilor Downs. The development, which is part of Victoria’s Big Housing Build Program, will comprise 23

single-storey and 24 double-storey dwellings for social housing. Feedback on the design of the project is currently open, but the state government has already given the project the green light. Planning regulations mean the development does not need a permit from Brimbank council. The group had several Zoom meetings last week, while a petition has garnered more than 300 signatures in a couple of days. Among those in the group is Brimbank councillor Maria Kerr, who lives nearby. The group has raised a number of concerns

about the development, including increased traffic from the development, access to services and public transport, and a lack of resources including mental health. The group has also made it clear they aren’t against affordable and social housing in the area but rather the high-density design of the project itself. Former Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice is another member of the group. She said residents were concerned about the lack of consultation and transparency. She said residents had been told that the

site would be used as a retirement village or nursing home. “Someone saw a sign on the site and took a photo of the sign and put it on Facebook,” she said of how residents found out about the development. “Some people received letters. “That part of Keilor Downs is the older area. Lockdown set to ease on Friday Tara Murray The end of lockdown is now within sight for Brimbank residents and the broader Melbourne area. Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that lockdown would end at 11.59 pm on Thursday night, when 70 per cent of eligible Victorians are expected to be fully vaccinated. The changes announced by Mr Andrews went further than expected, bringing some much welcome news for everyone. The five reasons to leave home are no longer

applicable. The 15-kilometre travel radius is gone, with Melbournians able to travel throughout all of metropolitan Melbourne, however regional Victoria remains off limits. Under the original plan, it had been set down that the radius would have extended to 25 kilometres. Restaurants can open for a limited number of indoor and outdoor patrons, while the return to school plan had been brought forward. The biggest change was the announcement that people can now visit other people’s homes.

This was not expected until the 80 per cent double dose threshold was met. Up to 10 people (including dependents) per day will be able to visit homes. It is highly recommended that people over the age of 12 be fully vaccinated before visiting homes. Other changes include childcare, Religious gatherings, weddings and funerals and construction sites. It’s expected that more restrictions will be eased either at the end of the month or early November.

The announcement comes despite the number of people catching COVID-19 still relatively high. The Department of Health reported 1903 cases on Monday from 69, 825 tests. Seven deaths were reported by the department on Monday. In Brimbank, there were 102 cases, as of Monday morning. There are currently exposure sites in Cairnlea, Deer Park and Ravenhall, according to the health department.

More station parking Nearly 100 new commuter carparks will be built on Sydenham Road near Watergardens railway station. The state government announced the construction of 95 new car parking spaces and safety upgrades on Sydenham Road will be started later this year. The works are part of state government’s car parks for commuters program and will be delivered by Brimbank council. Works will include the construction of asphalt roadside car parking bays and a shared user path along Sydenham Road. New kerbs, drains, and pedestrian areas will also be constructed between Roseleigh Boulevard and Ondella Way, as well as a new safety fence to be installed along the railway line. Landscaping work including tree planting will be completed along Sydenham Road as a part of the works. Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins said this is the first stage works to improve car parking at

Watergardens. “[It] will benefit the entire community– with more commuter car parking, improved safety, and creating better accessibility for Sydenham residents to get to Watergardens station.” Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said getting more car parking spaces built around Watergardens Station and infrastructure improvements along Sydenham Road was vital. “The new car parking spaces and improved infrastructure along Sydenham Road will provide more commuter car parking, improve pedestrian and cycling safety, and make it easier for Brimbank residents to get to Watergardens Station,” Cr Rasic said. “The additional car parking will help ease the parking pain in this area that our community’s reported for many years now. “It’s great to see what can be achieved when council and state government work together.” Tara Murray

Vaccine rates slowly on the rise By Tara Murray The vaccine rate in Brimbank is slowly starting to rise as more and more people get vaccinated. Brimbank has had one of the lowest vaccination rates in the state since figures were first released. As of October 11, 82.2 per cent of people over the age of 15 in Brimbank have received their first dose. That is an increase of 31.3 per cent in just over a month. The municipality’s second dose rate is 50.2 per cent, up from 43.7 per cent the previous week. The 3036 postcode has the highest vaccine

rate in the municipality, with between 85 and 90 per cent of eligible residents having had one dose, and between 60 and 65 per cent having had their second dose. The 3023 postcode has the lowest jab rate in the municipality, with between 75 and 80 per cent of eligible residents having had their first dose and between 40 and 45 per cent their second dose. It comes as Brimbank council has launched its #jabdone campaign to encourage more people to get vaccinated. The #Jabdone campaign is about getting the community back to doing what they love, while also protecting family and friends. The launch of the campaign comes nearly

a month after the neighbouring Hume municipality launched a successful campaign to get vaccination rates up. Brimbank community wellbeing director Lynley Dumble said this was the council’s latest step in the work it had been undertaking to promote vaccinations. She highlighted that the council had agreed to write to politicians at the last council, calling for more vaccines ahead of the launch of the campaign. “Council has been partnering for months with the Department of Health and IPC Health to ensure that residents have access to vaccination and testing sites.

“An important part of this has been our work with local community leaders and organisations to reduce vaccine hesitancy and encourage more take up. “The #Jabdone campaign launched as vaccination appointments at GPs and pharmacies began to roll-out and the Moderna vaccine boosted supplies to the municipality. “This public campaign complements the community focused approach of council and health organisation partners. “It was ramped up when vaccine supplies through the state and federal governments increased and more local vaccination points came online.”

Softball shows initiative When three local softball associations decided to join forces, it was about getting out on the diamond. After a tough period and a lot of uncertainty due to COVID-19, the Mill Park-based Northern District, Keilor Park and Districts and Sunshine softball associations formed the North West Travel League. The competition was played with modified rules to avoid contact, while the club’s were able to share grounds and equipment. All three clubs were able to stem the decline in player numbers due to the competition. The three associations and the competition were recognised earlier this month, winning the Victorian Sports Awards Initiative of the Year for 2020. Keilor Park’s Justin Zelones said they were shocked and excited to win such an award. “We were all quite nervous about numbers as

we were coming out of COVID,” he said. “Softball Victoria got us together and we sat down and talked about how we not only make a competition to start with, but how it would be robust and work within COVID rules.” Such was the success of the league, the clubs are running it again this year, with all three clubs looking at possibly fielding more sides, across mixed under-12s, under-14s, under-16s, under-18s competitions, and women’s and men’s competitions. There will also be T-ball. “I think the competition helped as you were playing a competition with more than one or two teams. “The way it looks it will be another growth year for us. Until we have enough teams for bigger standalone competitions, I can’t see why we don’t continue it.” If you’re interested in playing, contact the associations through their Facebook pages.

Doctor shares UK COVID lessons A Western Health doctor who has seen the worst of the pandemic is hoping that Australia will learn the lessons from other countries. Dr Laura Carter started at Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department three weeks ago having worked in the United Kingdom through its first three waves. Dr Carter worked in several different departments and hospitals in the United Kingdom, dealing with some of the sickest people. “It’s quite difficult to get that across to people who haven’t witnessed that,” she said. “Back in the UK in the waves, it’s quite tough … You had to treat colleagues, had to treat family members and deal with colleague deaths.

“You had to deal with shortages. When the waves were really big we had to decide how to rationalise oxygen. There were lots of fears about hospitals running out of oxygen. “It’s a horrible experience for anyone to go

through. It’s very hard to see whole family units torn apart by COVID.” Dr Carter said she had decided to move to Melbourne to progress her career due to the high global recognition. She said Australia had done the right thing getting on the front foot and prioritising people’s health above the economy. “The numbers in Victoria are rising and increasing,” she said. “I really hope the way that Australia has handled the pandemic, the buffer they’ve given, the experience they’ve got from the rest of the world and the vaccine is really going to help manage that we’re not going to get to the point we had to manage globally.”

Dr Carter said that since she had started working at Sunshine, the hospital had gone from no cases to seeing cases daily. She said most of the people they were seeing were unvaccinated. “In the three weeks I’ve been working, I’ve seen the numbers increase quite dramatically. I’ve been very impressed about the adaptability of the department. We are daily making changes to cope with notification workforce requirements. Last week we opened up a new floor to the emergency department, not only to separate people with COVID from non-COVID, but to create more space for the anticipation of illness that is going to come.”

AkzoNobel is unsure when a permanent odour solution for its resin plant in Sunshine North will be installed following delays. AkzoNobel has been in the process of building an air treatment system to control odour, which the supplier has said gets rid of 99 per cent of the smell associated with the resins. It had been hoped that the system, which was built overseas, would be installed and up and running by the middle of October. In a community update to residents, it said the solution [RTO] had arrived in the country, but was stuck on the docks. “Recent strikes by wharf workers have resulted in a backlog of inventory waiting for customs clearance,” the update said. “It was hoped that the RTO would be installed and up and running by the end of October, but it’s not yet known when it will be delivered. “A further update will be provided as soon as this is confirmed.” The update also confirmed that the group was aware some residents had experienced an increase in odours in recent weeks. An engineer’s report has shown a carbon filter, a temporary measure installed in June to help until the RTO arrived, is not working as it should. New filters are expected to arrive on site within the next week. The company is currently subject to Environment Protection Authority notices requiring measures to reduce odour from the site. Backing for new library and pool By Tara Murray Melton council has welcomed Infrastructure Victoria’s latest report which calls for a new library and aquatic centre in the municipality. Infrastructure Victoria’s ‘Social infrastructure in Melbourne’s growth areas’ study has found Melton is one of seven growth areas where governments need to boost spending to stop residents being left behind. According to the authority’s report, Melton will need both a new library and new aquatic and recreation centre in the next five years, ideally located in growth areas to the east of Melton. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said continued

and greater funding partnerships with the state government would ensure the council can deliver infrastructure that meets the needs of everyone in the community. “We know that more libraries and aquatic facilities are needed in our city and these are projects we hope the state government will invest in,” she said. “As our population booms, it’s important that we ensure all residents can easily access our learning and digital services, and that they have recreation facilities that meet their social and health needs. “As a council, we have advocated for increased funding of recreational and sport infrastructure across the municipality.

“We’re committed to further provision of aquatic facilities and are working on a business case and funding strategy for an aquatic centre in Plumpton. “State government funding for aquatic infrastructure will enable these much-needed facilities to be developed and meet community demand.” Cr Majdlik said the municipality’s population is set to reach almost half a million people in the next 30 years. She said they were asking the state government to urgently partner with the council on key major projects. “Local jobs creation and access to employment are particularly important for future livability,” she said.

“We’re grateful that the state government has made a commitment to the Melton hospital … But there’s still more work that needs to be done. “By investing in these and other key projects, the state government will help attract commercial investment and jobs growth that will allow residents to work close to home and spend more time with their families.” Other key projects the council are advocating for include the electrification of the Melton line, greater bus connections, and upgrades to the Western and Melton highways and allied health, mental health, family violence support, employment, and learning services.

United’s member drive Western United is hoping to break through the 10,000 member barrier for the upcoming A-League season. Having increased its member base to about 7500 in year two, the club is keen to push that mark even higher. United marketing manager Jon Barr said they were off to a good start, with memberships going on sale last week “We’ve just got over 2500 as part of the auto rollover,” he said. “That’s a fantastic number and a quarter of what we are looking at. We’ve set a lofty goal to reach 10,000 and we hope with the right approach we will hopefully get to 10,000.” Mr Barr said that membership and ticket prices had stayed the same as last season, which would benefit members. Members who sign up before Christmas will also receive a

discount price. Mr Barr said they had looked at what member benefits they had with each membership, to try and make them more enticing. “Paramount+ subscription [which will screen A-League games this season] is one of the big additions for our full and seven game members,” he said. “Not many other clubs are doing that. We’ve also gone different with the merchandise products. “Instead of different products, we’re giving gift vouchers starting at $25 that they can use to buy merchandise.” Mr Barr said they were keen to see as many fans and members in the stands as possible supporting United. Drugs charges Two St Albans residents have been charged with drug trafficking as part of an investigation into cultivating and trafficking cannabis plants. Police executed warrants in Braybrook, Keilor Downs, Berwick, Seaford, Hampton Park and Koo Wee Rup as part of the investigation. More then 300 cannabis plants were located, along with six hydroponic setups. A 34-year-old man from St Albans and a 33-year-old woman from St Albans were arrested in Koo Wee Rup on Monday. They face a number of charges including trafficking a commercial quantity and cultivating a commercial quantity. Both were remanded in custody until January.

Foreign students set to return By Tara Murray Victoria University has welcomed the state government’s plan to get international students back in the country and back into universities. The state government recently announced it had submitted its student arrivals plan to the federal government. The plan provides a safe return to study in Victoria for international students and a pipeline for continued arrivals through 2022. Students arriving under the plan will be in addition to Victoria’s existing international arrivals cap.

VU vice-chancellor, Professor Adam Shoemaker, said the university welcomed the move. “It is important to note that this plan still needs national cabinet approval before it is ready to go,” he said. “However, this is a positive first step and while it is a cautious approach, VU is working to ensure we are ready to welcome students back when the time comes. “In the meantime, we continue to actively support our current international students located in Melbourne with targeted support to ensure they continue to progress successfully through their course.”

Under the first stage of the plan, 120 places will be available each week for Victorian university students, prioritising those who need to undertake practical work to continue or complete their degrees, such as health and medical degree students, as well as postgraduate research students. Universities will provide funding towards the extra quarantine places for student visa holders, with students required to cover the cost of their flight to Melbourne. Students will be quarantined in dedicated accommodation. The second stage will enable more places

with larger-scale international student arrivals from across the sector, including those enrolled in TAFEs, english-language courses, private education providers and secondary schools. While more than 75,000 international students from 100 countries are currently studying in Victoria, about 47,000 more remain offshore while Australia’s international borders are closed. Trade Minister Martin Pakula said this was a sensible plan that will progressively get students who are enrolled at Victorian universities, TAFEs and colleges back to Victoria.

Frog count hops into its 20th year Frog enthusiasts and watchers are being asked to get ready to be on the hunt for frogs in their local area as part of the Frog Census. The Frog Census is a community-based frog monitoring program established in 2001, which uses data submitted by citizen scientists to help Melbourne Water teams track the health of the city’s frog populations, protect frog habitat areas and improve waterway health. Hundreds of frog loving volunteers have visited ponds, creeks, rivers and wetlands across Greater Melbourne to record a cacophony of frog calls – sharing their important data with

Melbourne Water. Six different frog types have been identified in Brimbank, according to the Atlas of Living Australia website. Melbourne Water’s Waterwatch co-ordinator James Frazer said almost 14,000 frog reports have been submitted by dedicated volunteers. “Importantly, this amazing group of people have detected rare and endangered frogs such as the growling grass frog, southern toadlet and bibron’s toadlet at a number of Melbourne sites. “Our communities have also been

instrumental in helping identify priority locations for conservation efforts including improving habitat and water quality,” Mr Frazer said. As well as the census there is an app and Facebook group for the frog count. Mr Frazer said the app has made the program even more accessible to the community as it allows volunteers to simply open the app and press record to capture the sounds of frogs enjoying their habitats.”

A program helping young people living in Brimbank and Hume to recognise the impacts of drink driving will now be available online. The Prevent Alcohol Risk-related Trauma in Youth Program (PARTY) program, which is run by Youth Junction and Royal Melbourne Hospital, has been working with young people for over a decade. Through the program, trauma professionals and trauma survivors share their experiences in a bid to educate young people about what happens when they make a risky decision or undertake risky behaviour. Until March last year the program was delivered partially on site at the Royal Melbourne hospital. With the pandemic preventing that from continuing, the hospital and Youth Junction worked to find a solution that could build on the success of the program but reduce the pressure of being on-site. The two groups have teamed up to offer a new one-day format, where participants are virtually connected into the hospital’s intensive care unit and speak to current patients and medical staff. The program will continue to focus on preventing accidents before they happen. Youth Junction chief executive Jo Malcolm Black said “We are delighted to still be running the PARTY Program three times a year, as we know what great results and impacts it has on those who undertake the program,” she said. By Tara Murray Lockdowns have left many older people feeling left alone and isolated, with activities they once did no longer available. Local groups couldn’t meet up in person, and for some people, the technology world was a step too far. Many haven’t seen their families in weeks, with cuddles and kisses put on hold. While the state gets ready to open up, this year’s Victorian Seniors Festival is putting a smile on the faces of many people. This year’s festival theme of ‘Keep’n On’ recognises the resilience of seniors after a difficult 18 months. The festival aims to connect with some of Victoria’s most loved and celebrated performers and includes performances for seniors who are looking to develop a greater understanding of diversity. The festival wants to remind people to continue to try and live their lives despite the pandemic. This year’s festival is a mixture of in-person and online activities, due to the pandemic. Seniors living in regional Victoria have been able to connect through a range of local, in-person events, while come and try tai chi classes are set down for Keilor, Werribee and Bundoora, if restrictions allow. Those in lockdowns haven’t been forgotten about, with a range of online musical performances, radio series, talks and shows from a wide range of Victorian entertainers. The festival includes a number of performers who are returning to be part of the event once again, while some are stepping up for the first time. At 90-years of age, you could forgive Elizabeth Chong for taking a step back and relaxing. But she continues to provide inspiration for other seniors. “I feel I have a role to play there for seniors,” she said. “If they feel like that I can inspire and get people there, I’m happy to do it. “I think perhaps they see me as a role model. A lot of people pre-empt their lifestyle when they get to this age. “I’m lucky I’m still active enough and I want to inspire them a bit.”

- Elizabeth Chong Ms Chong, who has been involved in the festival on a number of occasions, has made a name for herself as a prominent Chinese-born, Melbourne-based Australian celebrity chef, former cooking teacher, author and television presenter. She is a pioneer of the industry and was the first celebrity chef and promoter of Chinese cuisine to Australian households. She said the lockdowns had taken away one of the most important elements of cooking – sharing with friends and families. For this year’s seniors festival she has joined forces with her granddaughter Teresa Duddy who shares her love of performing and family. The two made a video talking about their relationship and lives. “We’ve worked alongside each other before,” she said. “She is a trained opera singer and done quite a lot of performing. “We were able to sit down and have a

conversation around a piano and I’m looking forward to being able to do it again.” Ms Chong’s biggest message is for seniors to stay positive. David Arden has been performing for seniors and elders for as long as he can remember. The Kokatha, Gunditjmara singer and songman has graced the stage for more than three decades, alongside acts including Archie Roach, Ruby Hunter, Bart Willoughby, Mixed Relations, Dan Sultan, Paul Kelly and Hunters and Collectors. Through song, Mr Arden reminisces on his childhood of being raised by four mothers and imagines what it would have been like to grow up with his grandfather. This is his first time being part of the seniors festival. “I had heard of the festival and they were interested in me to be part of it this year,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to feel a little bit normal and be part of an event. “Because of the lockdown it will be streamed into people’s houses and they will log on when they are ready to.” He said this year’s theme was really relevant due to the ongoing pandemic. “I remember when I was 15 years old and played music to my elders,” he said.

“I’m a storyman and storyteller who sings to tell their stories.” Others who will be performing as part of the festival are Ross Skiffington and Sam Angelico, who will perform magic acts from their days at the Last Laugh Comedy Club in Melbourne. Djoliba Rattler Quartet will play upbeat West African-inspired music and Jacob Papadopoulos and Sarita McHarg present an enticing India meets Greece collaboration. This year also marks the launch of the new Victorian Seniors Festival Reimagined podcast – Women, Arts and Activism – which dives into historical events and the lives of inspiring women from different cultures. Radio content this year includes Lux Radio Theatre presenting Fergus Hume’s Victorian classic, The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, and Sandy Greenwood’s powerful and award-winning play The Matriarch. The annual seniors free public transport week – a fixture of the festival – will return once restrictions allow. Seniors can listen in via their local community radio station or tune into video broadcasts and radio programs from the comfort of their own home until the end of the year. Hyundai has a very strong lineup of models in its Kona series - everything from conventional petrol-engined models all the way up to a full electric. This week’s road test review car is the Kona N-Line. It’s a sporty looking vehicle, though without the impressive performance of its big brother the more expensive Kona N Performance. The Kona is sold in a crowded class, with its major competitors being Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3 Mitsubishi ASX and Toyota C-HR.

Driving

The automatic is a continuously variable transmission to maximise performance and minimise petrol consumption. As part of the mid-life makeover the CVT replaced the six-speed conventional auto previously used. Read our opinion of this auto in the Driving section of this road test review.

The CVT automatic has been designed by Hyundai engineers to give it a feeling of having preset ratios, it did jar a little but we soon ceased to notice what was happening under the bonnet. You can sort of use it as a manual by changing ‘gears’ if you feel that way inclined. After trying this we simply left if to do its own thing. There’s less room in rear seat of the Kona than we had expected, meaning I had to move my driving seat forward a couple of notches to provide knee room for anyone behind me. The Koreans have a long history of tuning their cars to suit Australian roads and what we Aussie drivers like in the way of handling and comfort. Kona is obviously not a sports car but does hold on nicely during cornering and gives good feedback through the steering while and your backside. It’s a bit noisy on gravel road and there’s some bump-thump on concrete road joins such as those on our road test section on the M1 motorway between Gold Coast and Brisbane. Fuel consumption during our test period was in the 8 to 10 litres per hundred kilometres in town and suburban driving. It fell to five to six litres per hundred on country and motorway testing. All Hyundais have a five-year/ unlimited-kilometre warranty and a lifetime capped-price-servicing plan.

The updated Hyundai Kona offers a lot of car for a pretty modest price. We feel this update is a worthwhile one and we reckon it should certainly be on your list of cars to be checked out.

Styling Kona is a cross between a hatchback and an SUV in its shape. The protection around the wheels arches adds to the SUV look. The body is stylish without going over the top. We particularly like the interesting front shape with its high-level daytime running lights and the low-slung headlights. The N-Line has a revised front bumper and there are side skirts. Dual exhaust tailpipes provide a tough look to drivers following you. Ground clearance is 170mm which is higher than the typical on-road hatchback but falls well short of the 210mm in real four-wheel drives. That 170mm does add to the business-like appearance.

Interior There’s an upmarket look inside the Kona. We really like the practical dashboard with its large dials and an easy to see 10.5-inch centre display set at the same level as the instruments so you spend minimum time looking away from the road to check it. There’s rather too much black inside for our tastes, but to some extent that’s broken up by the red stitches on the sports seats and the steering wheel.

Infotainment The N-Line has an eight-speaker Harman/ Kardon premium sound system. We found the setup of the speakers is just right and it provides the sort of sound. There are interfaces for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Engines / transmissions The 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine produces 110kW of power and 180Nm of torque, the latter at a pretty high 4500 rpm. Most drivers will seldom go as high as 4500, however there’s reasonable punch below that number.

Blues hoping to build using home grown talent Keilor is hoping to show improvement on last season in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The Blues finished last season in eighth with three wins, but were in the mix to claim a few more scalps. Barbuto said with the group they had put together they were confident they could put together a good season.

By Tara Murray Caroline Springs gun Stephen Brewer is like a bottle of wine and he keeps getting better with age as he claimed the Western Region Football League’s top honour. While most people his age have retired from football, the 37-year-old produced one of his best seasons to claim the Barry Priest Medal for the best and fairest player in division 1. The league hosted an online ceremony to announce the winners of the awards for the men’s competition on Thursday night due to COVID-19 restrictions. Brewer polled in seven of the 12 games the Lakers played, finishing on 16 votes, two votes ahead of Deer Park’s Scott Greenhough. Brewer took the lead in the count in the second last round and despite not polling in the final round, was able to hold on. It’s the first time a Lakers player has claimed the Barry Priest Medal. Brewer, a former VFL player, has starred since joining the club, including winning the club’s 2019 best and fairest. It’s not the first time he’s been in contention for a league best and fairest. Back in 2014, Brewer, who was playing for Greenvale, finished second in the Essendon District Football League Reynolds Medal for the best player in premier division. Brewer was named in the centre in the division 1 team of the year this year, with his Lakers teammate Max Tessari named on the bench. Altona coach Corey McCall was picked as the coach of the team of the year while Hoppers Crossing star Ashlin Brown was selected captain. Players from eight of the 10 division 1 teams were named in the team of the year, with Hoppers Crossing having the most representatives with five. In other division 1 awards, Spotswood’s Nick Graham was voted the most valuable player by the coaches. Altona’s Saad El-Hawli was named the rookie of the year. Parkside’s Shaun Campbell won the Alan Smith Medal for the division 2 best and fairest. Campbell polled 20 votes to finish four ahead of North Footscray’s Adam Petridis. Albion’s Cody Bench and Wyndhamvale’s Daniel Smith finished third. Campbell dominated the division 2 awards, also being named the leading goal kicker and captain of the team of the year. He was one of four Parkside players named in the division 2 team of the year. Wyndhamvale dominated the team of the year with five players, while coach Luke

Barbuto said they had no expectations on that side this season. “We want to keep developing them as cricketers and since we’ve started we’ve had a younger side each week. “As they develop their games and craft, what better way than under Duncan and Luke.” Barbuto said the whole playing group was excited to get back out on the field. The season is currently projected to start on November 13. “It’s an exciting time and we’ll be glad to get back and hopefully have some sort of normality,” he said. “The guys are really excited and have had individual programs over winter and have been in nets in small groups. “The club and Duncan are ready to have the boys back and the female sides as well and get started on the season.”

His Suns teammate, playing coach Dean Cachia was named coach of the year as well as in the forward line, while Albanvale’s Brendan Cassar was selected as captain. There were six Suns players named, while five Albanvale players also made the team.

New Hillside coach Rob Davis is hoping to take the side to the next level in the Essendon District Football League premier division. The Sharks have been one of the big improvers in the women’s competition and were in the premiership mix this season until the pandemic saw the season called off. Davis replaces inaugural women’s coach Justin Fairservice. Davis said he was excited to return to coaching after a couple of years off. “I coached for a few years at the club previously, I coached the under-16s and under-18s [both boys]. “I needed a bit of a break after coaching for 11 years straight. I had a couple of seasons off and I was wondering where I would get the passion back to coach, and I believe that is with this women’s side.” This will be Davis’ first time coaching female football, but with two daughters and a wife at home, he has some understanding. Davis said for him, he decided to take on the role as he believed that he could make a difference. He paid tribute to the work that Fairservice and his coaching group had done to get the side to where it currently is. “With training structures and the protection of the bodies,” he said of what he was looking to improve. “There’s different techniques. Many are still raw. They are a great bunch of women and are striving for knowledge. “They want to learn quickly and this group of ladies work very hard. With some fine tuning with training and structures they’ll be not only good footballers, but great footballers.” Davis said early conversations with the playing group had been fruitful and he and the players seemed to be on the same page. “Coaching women’s football is something not too many people would have ever thought I would do. I’m very passionate and I don’t hold back. The players said that was what they wanted.” Davis said he would also work to mentor the under-18 girls side to make sure they’re all on the same page. Now for Davis and the group, they’re keen to get pre-season underway. “I’ve got a really good program for the pre-season.”
