Sunshine Business Association is looking to reward locals for getting vaccinated. The association will run an eight-week promotion, giving away $4000 worth of gift vouchers to spend at local shops. People can take part by sharing their vaccine photos via the Love Sunshine Businesses Facebook and Instagram pages. Ten randomly selected winners each week will receive a $50 voucher. SBA president Vu Du said the association wants businesses and retail to open up again, but to do that, everyone needs to be vaccinated. “Brimbank is one of the lowest vaccinated areas in the state and we want to help change that and reward our customers when they bravely get fully vaccinated,” he said. “We have had to cancel many events this year due to lockdowns such as the Sunshine Lantern Festival and the Sunshine Halloween Street Party, events that we stage for the community to visit Sunshine and enjoy our businesses’ hospitality. “To get back to what we love doing again we need to bite the bullet and get the jab now.” Details: search ‘loveSunshineBiz.Vic’ on Facebook and Instagram.

Fears for grasslands By Tara Murray Supporters of the Solomon Heights grasslands fear the construction of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link will impact on the area’s flora and fauna. The rail link will likely be built to the north-west of the existing rail line, which is next to the grasslands. While the route for the airport rail link is still in the consultation stage, Grassy Plains Network facilitator Adrian Marshall said the group believed it would be constructed off-site on land next to where the rail link would meet

the escapement of Solomon Heights. He said there were seven or eight grasslands that would be affected by the construction of the airport rail link. Mr Marshall said a number of burial sites had been found along the Maribyrnong River, adding that there’s an assumption the entire Solomon Heights escapement is culturally significant.’ The scope of the building works is going to be huge,” he said. “There could be temporary impacts on Kangaroos not going to the area for a couple of years.

“There will be light and sound pollution which will disrupt the fauna.” The land at Solomon Heights has been vacant since it was created as a residential subdivision in 1920s and rezoned to industrial in the 1940s. Victoria University honorary research fellow in ecology, Megan O’Shea said the grasslands were home to a number of species of national environmental significance. She said the grasslands are home to 29.5 hectares of Natural Temperate Grassland of the Victorian Volcanic Plain, which is critically endangered; 436 critically endangered Spiny

She said it was important that the environment of those animals wasn’t disturbed. “It is really good quality grassland and it’s near the top tier of grasslands,” she said. “We need to look after them and keep them in that high quality category as they’re becoming increasingly rare. “It’s also the only place in Sunshine you can see eastern grey kangaroos, it’s part of an important corridor.”

COVID vaccine blitz launched By Tara Murray COVID-19 cases continue to grow in Brimbank as another vaccine blitz gets under way this week. As cases continue to grow across the state, a number of cases have popped up in suburbs across Brimbank. On Sunday, there were 78 new cases in Brimbank, with a total of 690 active cases in the municipality. The 3023 post code which includes Burnside, Burnside Heights, Cairnlea, Caroline Springs,

Deer Park, Deer Park North and Ravenhall has the most active cases in the area. There has been an increase in cases in Sunshine West, with COVID-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar highlighting it as an area with increased cases on Sunday. The impact of the cases and exposure sites resulted in two supermarkets in Brimbank temporarily closing. The Sunshine Marketplace Woolworths store closed on Friday due to a lack of staff, while one of the Watergardens Woolworths stores was closed over the weekend.

The Marketplace store has reopened with reduced hours. There are currently exposure sites in Braybrook, Caroline Springs, Deer Park, Delahey, Derrimut, Keilor, Sunshine North, Sydenham, Taylors Lakes, Taylors Hill and Tullamarine. The cases come as a vaccine blitz began on Monday. The state government last week announced that all authorised workers will need to have at least one dose of the vaccine by October 15 to continue to work on site. Earlier deadlines set for some industries

such as construction and education remain in place. Among the industries listed on the authorised workers list are health services, funeral and marriage celebrants, emergency service workers both paid and voluntary, retail workers supporting the operation of click and collect, maternal and child health care workers, politicians and staff who have been working in offices. The Sunshine Hospital is one of 11 locations where authorised workers can walk up to get Moderna between October 4 and 10 as part of the blitz.

Youngster inspires with eco artwork Young Chloe is hoping her drawing and artwork will inspire others. Chloe was the winner of Keilor Central’s Eco Bag Competition, in which local kids were asked to design the centre’s new eco bag. The top three were put to a public vote, with eight-year-old Chloe’s design picked as the winner. The bag will be available in November. Chloe said she felt very proud to have been named the winner. “My design has the earth which is including structures from all around the world,” she said. “I chose to include those details to include everybody from different backgrounds. “I love drawing and when I knew the design was for an eco bag, I chose to draw the earth because eco bags are one the ways to protect our earth.” Chloe thanked everybody who had voted for her. She said she would keep on drawing. “I hope that my drawing can inspire other people to draw too.”

Woolworths in Braybrook to close its doors Many Braybrook residents will have to find somewhere else to buy their groceries, with the Braybrook Woolworths store to close its doors. The store, which is on the corner of Ballarat Road and Ashley Street in the Braybrook Shopping Centre, will close this month. A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed that the store, which had been open since 2001, would close this month. “We’ve made the difficult decision to close our Braybrook store when the lease expires in October 2021,” the spokesperson said. “All of our Braybrook team members will be offered redeployment to other stores in our network. “We wish to thank our local customers for their support in shopping at our Braybrook store over the years. “We look forward to welcoming customers to our other stores in the area.” Residents who wish to still shop at Woolworths will have to shop at Sunshine Marketplace or Highpoint which are the nearest stores.

Motorists nabbed Several Brimbank motorists were caught out doing the wrong thing on the roads over the AFL grand final long weekend. Police hit the roads from September 24-26, targeting speeding and impaired driving as part of Operation Scoreboard. In Brimbank, there were 23 offences recorded. Seven speeding drivers, three motorists disobeying signs and signals and two unlicensed drivers came to the attention of police, along with drug drivers and disqualified drivers. Statewide, there were 2054 traffic offences and a further 198 offences related to drink and drug driving.

Pyjama charity drive Workers at Amazon Australia’s Ravenhall fulfilment centre have helped raise funds and awareness for children fighting cancer by wearing their pyjamas to work. The workers recently donned PJs for the day as part of the annual Amazon Goes Gold (AGG) PJammin’ initiative in support of the hundreds of Australian children who are diagnosed with cancer each year. Amazon Australia donated $30,000 to The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Foundation as part of the day, as well as providing activity bags with handwritten notes from the team to entertain kids currently in the oncology ward. Inbound stow assistant Sanda said while it was a novelty to wear PJs to work, the reality for the thousands of Australians fighting cancer from their hospital beds is quite serious. “I feel privileged to raise funds for children’s cancer alongside my colleagues and I’m

incredibly proud to be part of a team that is making a difference.” Cancer is one of the leading cause of death by disease among children in many countries, with more than 750 children aged 0 to 14 diagnosed with cancer in Australia each year. Operations director Craig Fuller said while pyjamas may have increasingly made their way into virtual offices over the past 18 months, it’s important to remember that for years this has been the battle uniform of kids fighting cancer . “At Amazon, we’re proud to be wearing our pyjamas at our facilities across the country to stand in unity with these children and their families,” he said. “We hope to not only raise much needed funds and awareness, but also shine a spotlight on the incredible work that is being done by so many organisations to increase survival rates and find cures for childhood cancer.”

Help for struggling businesses By Tara Murray Brimbank businesses hit hard by the pandemic are set to receive a helping hand from council. Council will provide businesses with a range of fee waivers and refunds this financial year – similar to those on offer last year. A report to a recent council meeting said discussions with businesses through Brimbank’s COVID Response Business Taskforce had found that fee reductions and waivers would assist businesses. “Officers have analysed the range of fees and

charges and recommend applying a reduction or waiver of the fees and charges,” the report said. A 50 per cent discount be applied on upcoming fixed premises renewals for eligible

businesses that have been directly impacted. Those businesses include cafes, takeaways, restaurants, home businesses, home-based manufacturers, sporting clubs and school canteens. It’s expected the council would provide about $514,000 relief to local businesses. More businesses will benefit from the Brimbank COVID Recovery Business Grants program, with $300,000 in grants available. There are grants available for start-up micro businesses to assist with fees, registrations and equipment; small business support grants; and

small business booster grants. Last year more than 120 grants were awarded. Cr Virginia Tachos, who looks after the COVID-19 response portfolio, said the pandemic continued to impact Brimbank in a number of different ways. “We continue to support our local traders and more now than ever they need the support as the pandemic is dragging on and it’s hurting our businesses,” she said. “We are really stressing the importance of getting behind our local businesses whenever we can.”

United’s top support Western United is hoping to give back to the community and a local business that has really struggled throughout the pandemic. The club on Friday launched ‘The Top Corner’ initiative, which will see one local business get a $50,000 package, which includes sponsorship signage at United home games, access to digital branding and being able to take up hospitality opportunities at games. United’s general manager of commercial Chris Speldewinde said it had been a tough time for a lot of people and the club wanted to help out. “We want to support local businesses in the west who are doing it tough,” he said. “The smaller ones don’t have the capacity to spend a lot on marketing and that is one of the first things that gets cut. “We want to give something back to the community and to one of those businesses.” Businesses can enter via the United

website. Finalists will present a video to the club and the winner is picked from there. Speldewinde said winning something like this could help a business get back on track. He said United has spoken to local councils, who were very supportive of the idea. “It is certainly done from the heart,” he said. “We’ve got some really exciting stuff coming up and we want local businesses to be able to tap into that starting now.” Tara Murray

On a mission to spread kindness

In the Macedon Ranges, an animal sanctuary is reminding everyone to take a moment from their busy lives to spare a thought for animals. For the past 11 years, the first week of October has marked Be Kind to Animals Week, an initiative developed by Edgar’s Mission animal rescue as Oliver Lees reports.

tretched across 153 acres just outside of Lancefield, Edgar’s Mission has provided a sanctuary for farmed animals since 2003. Edgar’s Mission founder Pam Ahern said Be Kind to Animals Week was developed to start a conversation about how changes to our daily routine can make a positive impact in animals’ lives. “You can support your favourite animal welfare charity by volunteering or donating, organise a beach or park clean up, leave water out for local wildlife and so much more,” Ms Ahern said. As part of the week-long campaign, Edgar’s Mission encourages the community to make a kindness pledge. This pledge can take a variety of forms, such as committing to a random act of kindness, using products that don’t test on animals, or using plant-based products instead of meat. This year, the Be Kind to Animals campaign is aiming for more than 5000 pledges, with the site already notching up close to 4000. To help get them over the line, Edgar’s Mission has enlisted the help of human and animal ambassadors to spread the message. Among the furry helpers is kangaroo Brad Pit, who was rescued from an abandoned mineshaft by the Five Animals Rescue shelter based in Trentham. Brad Pit was saved from the seven-metre shaft by Five Animals Rescue founder Manfred Zabinskas. As reported by Star Weekly in June, 2020, Zabinskas led a rescue team which included Ms Ahern and five others. Brad Pit was saved, rehabilitated and released back into his native environment weeks later. As for two-legged advocates, DJ and wellness enthusiast Dara Hayes (also known as DJ

Tigerlily) has thrown her support behind the Be Kind To Animals Week ethos. “Research has proven that animals feel pain and emotions, share languages, family bonds, and rituals,” Ms Hayes said. “They are just as deserving of our kindness. Switching to a plant-based lifestyle was the best decision I have ever made. It is empowering to be a voice for the voiceless and to live a life that is causing no cruelty or harm to other beings. “It costs nothing to be kind.” Joining Ms Hayes is TV presenter Marieke Hardy, actor Martin Dingle Wall, plant based nutritionist Tammy Fry and others. While life has slowed down for many industries during the pandemic, Edgar’s Mission has remained busy. In the past 18 months, Edgar’s Mission has rescued 196 animals and cares for between 400 and 500 animals at any one time. Among them is Kiki Dee, whom Ms Ahern describes as one of the smallest lambs the sanctuary has ever received. “Kiki Dee’s eye had been pecked by a bird, but a kind heart brought her to the sanctuary,” she said. “Today, after lots of love and care, she is a happy and very affectionate sheep. It just goes to show the power of kindness, and it also speaks to the range of emotions all animals feel, no matter what they look like.” To celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week, Edgar’s Mission will be hosting a number of talks led by Ms Ahern. COVID takes a sport toll By Tara Murray The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on sporting clubs, with some unlikely to survive according to a new report. The Australian Sports Foundation last month released a report on the impact of COVID-19 on community sport, as a follow up to a report produced last year. It found many clubs continue to suffer severe financial losses and that there has been a profound negative social impact with participation continuing to decline and the crisis was impacting volunteers. The average lost revenue per club was found to be $18,5000 and 42 per cent of clubs surveyed cannot source enough volunteers. New Braybrook Sporting Club president Anthony Dunlop said it had been a hard couple of years for all local sporting clubs. “It was tough in 2020 when there was no sport at all and we were completely shut down,” he said. “We got some sort of season this year, but for some people it was even worse with the unexpected. “You plan major functions, do outlays and then they get shut down and you lose some of the initial outlay.” Mr Dunlop said the club had merchandise it had purchased still sitting in the rooms, while it had to throw out some food. He said the pandemic had made it even harder to get volunteers involved. “We were struggling for volunteers as it is. Who wants to tell someone that they aren’t able to head out to the half time huddle.” For the club, the pandemic has halted the momentum it had been gaining. After a number of tough years, the club was coming out the other side. It had been looking to re-establish a junior program after not having one for several years.

Braybrook, like many other clubs, has been affected by the pandemic.

“It’s had a huge impact on numbers,” Mr Dunlop said. “One of our last games was against a club that is four streets away from us and they’re in a similar situation, but worse.

“When you’re not sure what is around the corner, you don’t know whether you want to be involved. “There’s a lot of disheartened players and it’s impacted their mental health.”

Call for louder airport voice Brimbank councillor Virginia Tachos is calling for councillor representation on the Melbourne Airport Community Aviation Consultation Group. At the last council meeting, Cr Tachos said there should be councillor representation from Brimbank, Hume, Melton and Moonee Valley councils. Currently there is just one councillor from Hume on the group. New pathways open for improved infant care Adjunct Associate Professor Christopher Carter Ceo, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network As every parent knows, looking after an infant can be a fast route to frustration and fear. Very little kids can’t explain when they feel ill, or tell anyone where it hurts. And their carers often experience awful anxiety when their darlings suddenly go off food, don’t sleep well, start to lose weight or develop rashes. GPs and maternal child health nurses are the first ports of call for worried mums, dads and other carers. To help our doctors and nurses provide strong, compassionate and consistent care for little ones North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has created a new suite of tools, called Infant Pathways. Available to all medical professionals, Infant Pathways are designed to streamline the management of health matters in the really young. As well supporting GPs and specialist nurses in their work, the system also reduces stress and anxiety for the tiny patients – and their parents. There are 10 Infant Pathways. Some concern common baby issues such as being unsettled (or ‘colicky’, as your grandmother probably called it), sleeping poorly or loss of appetite. Others concern less frequent conditions, such as prolonged jaundice or hip problems. Then there are others that focus on premature or low-weight infants, plus things such as birthmarks, rashes or skin lesions. All these together we call the Routine Infant Check. There have been similar pathways in place for older children for a while now, and these really help to fill the gap in information and planning for doctors and nurses, as well as parents and carers. For clinicians, each pathway contains detailed information on possible causes

for infant distress, and includes treatment options, red flags and assessment tools. It’s a very efficient way to identify and deal with the common hurdles of infancy, but also opens up directed guidelines for a whole atlas of less common issues. pharmacy medications, onward referrals, or the (always welcome) news that there is no need to worry and the matter will clear up all by itself. And that reassurance is important. Hopefully it will be an important first step in setting up enduring relationships with medical practitioners, based on a firm foundation of compassion and care.

Research grants to find new ways to treat diabetes Victorian’s living with diabetes may have new ways of treating and preventing their condition in the future thanks to new project funding. The Diabetes Australia Research Program in Victoria has awarded 19 research projects funding to develop ways to reduce serious complications of diabetes. Diabetes Australia chief executive Professor Greg Johnson said he hopes the $1.1 million grant will help the 1.8 million Australians who have diabetes. “This year we mark the 100-year anniversary since the discovery of insulin and look forward to the next discovery that transforms the lives of people with diabetes,” Professor Johnson said. “Diabetes research has improved the quality of life of people living with all types of diabetes and we hope the research announced today can lead to more breakthroughs.” Each project will receive up to $60,000 in funding. Some of the projects include researching a protein released by the liver to create a long-lasting protein injection, research into treatment for people who have undergone kidney transplants and heart surgery and research into the effectiveness of resistant starch, found in foods like whole grains and legumes. These research projects will be undertaken at some of Victoria’s leading research institutions including Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Monash University, Deakin University, University of Melbourne, La Trobe University, St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Professor Johnson said these grants will help support the prevention, management and hopefully a cure for people with diabetes and gives them hope of not having to live with the disease.

Professional property managers are a wise investment New landlords often try to maximise their profits by managing their own properties but this can cost them money. Most investment owners also don’t have the time to deal with their portfolios. Tim McKibbin, chief executive of the REINSW, says the role of a property manager grows in complexity almost daily. “The recent amendments to residential tenancies act and regulation are testament to that proposition,” he says. “By way of a recent example, property managers now have to deal with the termination of a tenancy due to domestic violence involving one of the tenants.” One lawsuit avoided, one eviction averted, even one less month with a vacant property can cover the cost of hiring a property management company. How has COVID-19 affected their role? “Government imposed protections for tenants, both residential and commercial, were being thrust upon property managers almost daily,” Mr McKibbin says. “A lot of the mechanics (workings) of the protections were rushed through the normal processes, consequently they were difficult to apply. “COVID-19 created stressful conditions both financially and emotionally for tenants and landlords. That stress was being absorbed by property managers all day, every day.”

A person seeking a career in real estate does the same course which includes education on property management. “Upon successful completion of the course and attaining their qualification the student can apply for their certificate/ licence. “The units of education required to be undertaken are prescribed by the government. The REINSW lobbied government relentlessly for an increase to

the education requirements – we achieved that result with implementation effective March 23 last year. “Prior to that, the education required was less than a week. This churned out people into the industry with inadequate skills – 80 per cent of people coming into the industry left it in the first 12 months. With the increase in education we hope to see a greater retention of people entering the industry, which will increase the aggregate skills, experience and knowledge of the industry.”

There’s nothing out of the ordinary in the new Kluger’s looks. They are from the standard read traditional (old fashioned?) - SUV script. No sleek coupe crossover curves here. Toyota calls the shape ‘sculpted’. I call it ‘square’ in both its meanings.

Chief among these is the autonomous emergency braking pre-collision safety system that is able to detect pedestrians day and night, cyclists during the day, oncoming vehicles and pedestrians at intersections when making turns, and assist you to take evasive action if there is potential for a collision. The system provides varying levels of assistance from visual and audible warnings, braking assistance, steering assistance, and full emergency braking if the driver fails to respond.

The MY21 Kluger is 76 mm longer (4966 mm) and, at 1755 mm, 25 mm higher than the previous model. While overall width has increased by a mere 5 mm to 1930 mm, 20 mm wider flared wheel arches give the car a robust appearance. As befitting a seven-seat SUV, the bold character is reinforced by large upper and lower trapezoidal grilles split by the front bumper. Slimline LED light clusters with integrated daytime running lights are situated above deep recessed LED fog lamps integrated into the flared front end. On the plus side, an extended and flatter underbody and spats in front of the wheels contribute to improved aerodynamics. The Grande rolls on 20-inch wheels with a polished

chrome appearance.

Interior The broad dash, in smart soft-touch materials, houses the instrument cluster, a central 8-inch touchscreen display and air-conditioning controls and vents. A lower centre console is separated by a panel that stretches the width of the car. The lower centre console incorporates the transmission lever, drive and AWD mode select switchgear, electronic park brake and two large cupholders. Other storage includes a 15-litre lidded centre console box, overhead glasses holder, front door bins with 700 ml bottle holders, rear door bins with two 700 ml bottle holders and eight cupholders.

Weier makes it to the big time By Tara Murray When Michael Weier arrived at Hume City from Brisbane as a 19-year-old, his soccer career was just starting to take off. Five years later, as he leaves the club as one of the best goalkeepers in the country and with an A-League contract. Weier now calls the Newcastle Jets home after signing with the side for the upcoming A-League season. Weier said he had no idea that he was on the Jets’ radar until he got a phone call from the club. “It is good, it is something I’ve worked towards for five years or so,” he said. “It’s good when all the hard work pays off. It’s now about taking that opportunity. “The boss gave us a call and I guess that was my clue. In terms of preparations, we hadn’t played for four weeks. “I was sitting there doing nothing for four weeks, it wasn’t the best of preparation. The Jets boss let me ease into things.” Weier didn’t have long to let the news settle in that he had signed a contract, moving to Newcastle in the following days. Like Melbourne, Newcastle is in lockdown. Weier is the first to admit he struggled when he first took to the training track. “I’ve got some mates who have played for the Jets over the years and they speak highly of the place,” he said. “Speaking to them and getting their feedback, it was exciting knowing I was coming here. “I haven’t seen much of Newcastle yet, from what I’ve seen the beaches are great, weather seems to be nice every day, I can’t complain. “Obviously the preparation wasn’t the greatest. Trying to back up the next day after a big session it was tough and the body wasn’t handling it too well. “I had to get in a lot of ice baths and do all the little things to ensure that I was training every day. Once I got through that two week period, my body has handled it now and I’m able to keep backing up.” Weier is no stranger to expectation, following in the footsteps of goalkeeper Chris Oldfield at Hume City. Oldfield won NPL goalkeeper of the year the year prior to Weier joining the club. Weier would win that title in 2017 and 2019, with Oldfield winning it at Avondale in between. Weier’s heroics in the FFA Cup also made headlines nationally. Weier was quick to praise the impact of Hume City on his life. “Going down to Hume, the club treated me like family from day one,” he said. “That helped me really settle in there. Trusting a young keeper, I knew I had to repay

them one way or another. It’s been a good five years at Hume and I’m grateful for them, it was a great time.” Weier’s time at Hume has coincided with the most successful period in the club’s history, including winning the club’s first piece of silverware; the Dockerty Cup in 2019. The club has made the final of this year’s competition, which has been postponed due to the pandemic. It made the final 32 of the FFA Cup. “The football was fun,” Weier said. “Playing

with the characters that I did, through the ups and downs it was always good to stIck around the club. “Bringing the Dockerty Cup to Hume for the first time … It was a special time, we were looking forward to doing it again over 2020 and 2021, but COVID didn’t allow us to do so. “I know the club is at a strong point and they will keep on and win more championships and I have full confidence in them.” Weier thinks there will be more titles in the coming years.

“The club grew me personally on the field and off the field,” he said. “I didn’t think anything of it when I went down, I thought I would give it my best shot. With the facilities the club has, the personnel in the boardroom, it allows you to grow on and off the field. “I owe a lot to that club and I’m grateful for my time there.” Weier now is looking forward to getting onto the pitch once restrictions end in Newcastle. “We’ve had a lot of intra club games,” he said. “As soon as anything is opening up we’ll be trying to get on the pitch. “You can do as much as you like in training, but at the end of the day it’s what you put on the pitch that matters. “I love to play game day, it’s what you work for.” Jets manager Arthur Papas, who coached against Weier in the NPL, said the club was very happy to have secured Weier for the upcoming season. “Michael has been the outstanding NPL goalkeeper for some time now where he also captained his side Hume City,” Papas said. “Since training with us Michael has impressed everybody with his character and his qualities, and the goalkeeper position is the same as any other position where we need to have players competing daily.”

Wright, Paterno named joint best and fairest Two of the biggest names in the Essendon District Football League women’s premier division have shared the league best and fairest. Hillside’s Emily Paterno and Westmeadows Gemma Wright both polled 15 votes to share the award in what was a close count. Paterno started the season on fire, with four successive best on ground performances, with Wright coming home strong in the back half of the season. Both polled votes in the final round to finish one vote clear of Keilor’s Kaitlyn O’Keefe. Paterno, who finished second in the goalkicking and was named in the team of the year, was quick to praise everyone at Hillside. Paterno started her career at the Sharks before going on to play VFL. She returned to the Sharks in 2019. “Congratulations to Gemma Wright, who I share this award with, you had a fantastic season and you really deserve this one,” she

said in a video on the league’s social media page. “While this is recognised as an individual award, I don’t see it that way. “I would firstly like to thank all my teammates down at Hillside, I was lucky enough to run out

alongside a champion team every single week and all their work up and round the ground is what has afforded me this opportunity.” Paterno thanked her coaches for making her a better player and also praised the club’s volunteers. “You guys are honestly the heart and soul of every footy team, the reason why we are able to get out on the park every weekend and do what we love.” Wright was a standout for the Tigers in her first season, having joined the club for the cancelled 2020 season. As well as playing in the senior side, she coached the club’s second women’s side this year. The league best and fairest win is her first after finishing in the placings twice before. She was third in the best and fairest in 2017 and runner-up in Northern Football League best and fairest in 2018, both times behind her twin sister, Sarah.

Gemma Wright also has a VFLW Carlton best and fairest to her name. A post on the Westmeadows Facebook page said Wright had fitted in with the team and had become a leader and mentor to the playing group. “Her wealth of football experience and knowledge assisted in both of our women’s teams placing in ladder positions to have a real crack at a premiership.” Wright was also named in the EDFL premier division team of the year. Players from every team were selected in the team of the year, with Oak Park and Keilor having four players selected each. Kaitlyn O’Keefe was named captain of the side and Maribyrnong Park’s Charlie Fenech was named coach of the year. In the premier men’s competition, Aberfeldie ruck Nick Meese was awarded the Reynolds medal.

Roadrunners on the hunt for a new coach

Castello heads home By Tara Murray One of the Essendon District Football League’s best players is heading home to play at Keilor Park. The Devils, which have slowly been rebuilding the last couple of years, have announced the massive signing of Robbie Castello for the 2022 division 2 season. Castello started his playing career at the Devils before heading to NAB League and the VFL. In more recent times, Castello has been back playing in the EDFL. He was captain-coach at Maribyrnong Park for four seasons, before joining Westmeadows in 2019. Devils coach Paul Guicas said the signing of Castello was massive for the club and one of the biggest in the club’s recent history. “We’re pretty happy,” he said. “We’ve been speaking to Robbie for a few years and just checking in. He had previously mentioned about possibly wanting to finish at Keilor Park. “It’s now the right time. He’s a great person

and will be terrific for the club.” Guicas said the addition of Castello would help provide some more leadership on and off the field. He said they expected Castello to play plenty of midfield minutes, while also having an impact up forward. He said leadership on field was one thing they lacked at times this year. The Devils finished sixth this year with four wins from 10 matches. “We were a very young side. We won against Coburg Districts and Hadfield and we beat Burnside Heights and were thinking how good is this? Then we lost to Coburg Districts by 90 points. “We hadn’t played a lot of games together. Robbie will be able to help guys settle down when things aren’t going our way. “He will help the midfield and you can’t put weight on how important he is.” Castello, who won the league’s division 1 best and fairest award in 2019, is currently recovering from an Achilles injury. Guicas said Castello had been really professional in his recovery and was starting to jog on it now and was feeling great.

Guicas said they were yet to have proper conversations about whether Castello would have an official coaching role, but Guicas expected him to provide plenty of leadership either way. “He wasn’t sure if he was going to play and it’s about wanting to get himself right first,“ he said. “Hopefully Robbie will help out in some capacity, but we will talk about it later on. “I’ll be speaking to him all the time and getting his opinion on things. He will help run the midfield.” Castello is the first big new signing for the Devils for next year. Guicas said his phone had been running hot since announcement. “Hopefully it will be a domino effect and we might have other players who have played with Keilor Park but playing elsewhere looking to come back,“ he said. “We’ve had a couple of tough years, but we’re getting to the next stage. We’ll hopefully make some more announcements in the next couple of weeks. We wanted to get respect this year and I think we did that. Now it’s about putting it together and being consistent every week.”

North Sunshine is on the hunt for a new men’s coach after Ange Messina stood down as the Western Region Football League’s division 3 club’s coach. The club on it’s social media pages said that Messina had made the decision to step away due to increased work commitments and wanting to spend more time with his young family. The statement said that only playing nine games across across two seasons, but having done two years of preparation was also part of the decision. Messina was appointed to the role in late 2019, taking on a side that hadn’t won a game since 2018. Due to COVID-19, he didn’t get to coach a game last year. This year the Roadrunners broke through for a win after more than 1087 days, beating Laverton by one point, with plenty of ensuring celebrations. The Roadrunners finished this season in sixth, with that one win. “The North Sunshine Football Club would like to thank Ange for the work he has done over the last two years, both on and off field.” the club’s statement said. “All of us at the Roadrunners wish you all the best and hope to see you around the club.” Messina has long been involved in the WRFL as a junior and senior player, starting his coaching career in 2008. This was his first time as a senior coach. The Roadrunners have advertised for a new coach and are encouraging suitable applicants to send through their applications.
